Camp Battles – WR

The Dolphins currently have 11 wide receivers on the roster, so that means that basically half of them will be gone when we start the season and cut down to 53.  It’s possible we keep 6 WR’s, although last year we only had 5 WR’s on our roster.  Our new additions Albert Wilson and Danny Amendola are obviously 2 WR’s that are IN.  Kenny Stills and Devante Parker are the other 2 that are definitely IN.  That leaves 1 or 2 spots that will be up for grabs in what I hope is a pretty fierce competition.  Let’s take a look at who’s in that competition for the last 1 or 2 WR spots.

Jakeem Grant WR – 5’6″ 169

I feel like Grant has an excellent chance of making the roster for two reasons.  The most obvious reason is his potential and experience as a dynamic kick returner.  The new kickoff rules at least in theory seem to favor speed, and Grant has that in spades.  He has returned both kickoffs and punts, and in addition, he has shown flashes of big play capability.  Last season Grant had 13 receptions for 213 yards and 2 TD’s.  That’s a nice 15.6 YPR and a TD every 6.5 receptions.  That’s maximizing your opportunities.  Personally, I think Grant is a shoo in, but I don’t mind if some of the other guys make it a tough decision, that’s what competition is all about.

___________________________________________________________________

Leonte Carroo WR – 6’0″ 211

It’s strange, but I think if anyone could ever benefit by being injured, right now it’s Leonte Carroo.  Frankly, this kid has shown so little, there’s a good reason why I consider him LC3, the WR counterpart to RB Daniel Thomas A.K.A DT3.  Both players were traded up for which squandered multiple picks (3 to be exact!), and both players are disappointments.  DT3 is now finally off the radar, but Carroo recently had a minor knee surgery which momentarily gives him a reprieve of further disappointment.  2 seasons, 10 catches and 98 yards and 1 TD for the 3rd RD pick we traded 2 additional picks for.  This guy was dynamic at Rutgers, a burly wide receiver with good speed and some run after the catch ability.  We just haven’t seen any of it and it seems as if this kid just isn’t motivated.  Maybe the actual threat of being cut will inspire him to get his ass in gear, but Carroo who doesn’t play special teams is on the bubble in my opinion.

____________________________________________________________________

Francis Owusu WR – 6’3″ 210

Owusu has nice size and speed to go with it.  The big WR ran an impressive 4.37 at his pro day, and looked good in camp and preseason, but didn’t make the cut last year.  The UDFA Stanford player has a shot this season, especially if LCIII stays on his current trajectory.  Owusu looked pretty good last year, and while he doesn’t quite have the athletic ability of Devante Parker, he has the size and speed, and looked to have pretty have good hands.  I recall being impressed with him last year in the preseason.  The kid has the ability to go up and get the football too with a nice 39″ vertical.  If he makes the most of his opportunities, he has a shot, especially if we go with 6 WR’s.

_____________________________________________________________________

Rashawn Scott  WR – 6’1″ 199

Rashawn Scott is now 26, and the former Hurricane product is running out of time in Miami.  He was on the PS and actually made into 3 games total on ST’s, 2 in ’16 in 1 last season.  If Scott can show the kind of play he had in his senior season at Miami, he may be able to crack the roster, but again, it would have to be a 6 WR corps.  His last year at Miami, Scott caught 52 passes for 695 yards and 5 TD’s.  Injuries and maturity issues have kept Scott from succeeding, and this is probably his last shot with the Dolphins, so if he stays healthy and on the straight and narrow track he has a shot, albeit a slim one.

______________________________________________________________________

Isaiah Ford  WR – 6’1″ 194

Last year’s 7th RD pick, Ford comes into training camp facing an uphill battle.  Like Jarvis Landry, Ford is more quick than fast.  He has 4.6 speed, which is adequate, but he has to run crisp routes and show good acceleration out of his cuts, which Ford does. The former VaTech player had a very nice college career, with 24 TD receptions, and 210 receptions overall.  Not to be repetitive, but I think the only way Ford makes the cut is if we carry 6 WR’s.  Ford most likely is a slot WR.

________________________________________________________________________

Drew Morgan  WR – 6’0″ 187

Morgan was an UDFA pickup last season who spent some time on the PS squad.  The former Razorback WR had a decent career at Arkansas, and is a crafty route runner.  He lacks speed and physicality and play strength so Morgan will have play at a very high level to open some eyes in minicamp and training camp.  Morgan has better than average hands, and has showed he will make the tough catch in traffic.  He’ll have to do those things and more to have a shot at making the 53.

There is no “evil genius” when it comes to Belicheat*… he’s a FRAUD, a CHEATER, and exploits every single loophole in the book.

Belicheat* could have JaMarcus Russell as his QB (and name a loser at every single other position to complete their roster), and he’d still be a playoff contender every year.

KNOWING what we all know about Tannehill and his work ethic since the very day he was drafted in 2012… YES… Jarvis just took a shot at Tannehill.

        Screw Jarvis Landry.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannehill has been having those throwing sessions away from the facility for years. Jarvis is lying. He should be grateful, CLE was the only team willing to deal for him and pay him. His market wasn’t all that big. Tannehill is the QB who helped you get the pay day the most douche!

And thank you for sharing… I wanted to see if there was an angle by which Jarvis could have been taken out of context.

Miami radio was suggesting that maybe Landry just wanted the ball with better placement so that he can catch AND run…

        So I’m thinking to myself..

Maybe if you were able to create more than a few inches of separation you wouldn’t be tackled immediately upon completion??

Shoot we could toss it 5 to 30 yards out in front of you,
and you’d still be tackled immediately so that you couldn’t tackle the interceptor!!!

Almost a ZERO threat to get over the top,
        You’re any easy cover!!!

You’re only worth a damn if able to square-up on the defender (who initially missed his coverage responsibility), and for the dreaded when not required One Handed Catch!!!

I’m actually COOL with T.O. skipping the HOF ceremony about himself. I think it takes BALLS to skip a ceremony, which was to be ALL ABOUT him. Perhaps he’s finally growing up a little bit. The ‘old’ T.O. would have gone to Canton and BASKED in his own SUN.

I realize this matter is controversial, but he might FINALLY have realized that it’s not ALL about himself.

      I don’t think it’s a huge deal
It’s his choice – he earned induction

I think he will regret not going one day and enjoying that moment but it’s his choice

13kv, Gase often said even when we were 3 WR, TE and RB teams play us base defense. They covered Landry with LBs and safeties. Stills and Parker drew the corners. That says a lot, and still a low YPCA.

This year’s crop of samurai include some of the swiftest swordsmen we’ve had in a while.

I will miss Landry who was a reliable archer but maybe Parker can slay some sepreants his year with his katana and Stills has been quite skilled with the Tanto since we traded for him.

Wilson and Amendola already come to us renowned for their Hanbo mastery.

Look to Grant to occasionally cause some carnage with his Naginata

    (Piggy bows)

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Piggy – I like the way Landry played the game, but I’m hoping spreading the ball around more to Parker, Stills, Wilson, Gesicki, Gore, Drake and Ballage and Grant will make the offense so much less predictable and stagnant. When you’re throwing what seems like every other pass to one guy, the defense kinda knows who to cover.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Gescki and the RBs help this argument but I’m not huge fan of the idea that we will be better by getting ready of the guy who was open while the others weren’t

The lack of creativity on offense last year should not be on Landry’s shoulders.

I’m excited about 2018 for a lot of reasons. But I am scared that our coaches are a problem and managed to escape scrutiny by pointing the finger elsewhere

I do think having Tannehill from the outset rather than Cutler is huge for us. And with the exception of no more Suh, the defense looks built to do some damage

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – It’s not necessarily that he was always open, but he was always close enough to get the ball to, whether it was a screen, or just a short route, which is really the problem. Too many short passes to the same player makes it difficult to get 1st downs.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My hope is that the short passes are to the running backs, and we give them some space to run, and the other throws are a little further downfield.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And move the ball, too many of his catches were at the LOS and he didn’t get many yards after catch, because he would turn and stop, instead of turn and go.

In baseball the guy that was never great for any one year, but had good career stats is known as a stat compiler, that’s Landry.

He was always up there in YAC, because when you catch 100 balls even a couple yards after every catch will get you a lot of YAC.

Better by subtraction, dont let the door…

Steve – Not a perfect analogy, but when I used to play roller hockey, we had certain guys that we called “Goalhangers”, because instead of skating up and down the field and they always scored the most goals because they were always close to the goal. Landry was like that, he caught the most passes because he was always closer to the LOS, so the most visible and easiest to get the ball to.

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bottomline is, in a few months no one here will miss Landry.

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes Mike, we should be getting the bulk of our short receptions to our RBs, those are the guys geared to working around the LOS.

Nothing pissed me off like a pass to Landry behind the LOS, that gained zero or negative yards.

    • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

Been suggesting for years quit wasting that Bubble Screen on 14, in most cases he can’t make anyone miss, all you’re gonna get is what he can bulldoze for (from behind or at the LOS)!!!

Make that play Grants play, they did towards the end,
And he’d make the first two guys miss, and five, ten yards up the field he’d bull doze for the yardage that 14 was trying to get at the LOS!!!

Can’t say it’s on the QBs if that’s what was called by Gase.

In order for the bubble-screen to work, you’d better have a good blocking WR on the edge. IMO, Jarvis was our best blocking WR… so he should not have been the target of any bubble-screens to begin with.

    ———————————
I think the WR screens have been a completed failure. With a back like Drake we should run more traditional RB screens and wheel routes. Could probably use Grant out of the backfield or from the slot, pulling the OL in a more traditional screen blocking formation.

It might be that the actualy speed of Grant makes the trips formation less noticeable as a formation we run WR screens out of, and that in itself ups the success rate, but in general, in our past that trips formation WR screen has been a huge failure.

It depends on what you are missing. I think we can have a productive unit without him, so im not going to miss him in the sens that i think the entire offense is going to be broke without him. I will still miss the over all tenacity of his play. I will miss the fact he never gave up on plays and just accepted the yardage they gave us and would fight for as much as he could and many times get us a bunch of extra yards as a result. I wont miss the fact he was a tough as nails player who gave us his best on every snap. Not to much here on the panhandle either. Mostly prescription drug abuse, meth and heroin around here.
    ————–
SAME here in PA (meth and heroin). It’s VERY bad here! From what I understand, we’ve got it the very worst in the nation. If you follow me on Twitter, I’ve spoken about this matter.

A lot of heroin is rampant in the west hills of NJ like Wantage and West Milford which isn’t far from areas of PA. Then it trickles down into more of the suburban areas.

  39. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Landry was a great player for us. Why can’t fans just acknowledge that and move on? How this offense comes together moving forward has nothing to do with him, but I wonder how people will respond when he’s not there to bail out tannnehill when he needs to get rid of the ball because he doesn’t know where else to go. Be careful what you wish for. It may not play out the way you think.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most fans here did appreciate what he did here and have moved on. But I will say he wasn’t great, he was very good on a 2nd rd deal for what he brought to the table. But he isn’t worth elite money but he got it from CLE – good for him.

Not worried about him not being here to bail out Tannehill because I don’t think that was ever the case. Amendola and Wilson should be able to be those short and medium range guys with no drop off. It would be nice if TE became an option too. I think we’ll see more passes to the backs as well.

Heroin was never a big thing in suburban NJ when I was a teenager. It was a very small minority of people and I did know some who did use but my close friends and I were never drawn to it. It wasn’t rampant like it is now. But yes drug use was prominent – mostly weed, coke and hallucinogens.

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
100 receptions….1000 yards….and a 10 yard average for basically a possession WR over 4 years….and was the heart of this offense. Find another player who did that in his position. No need to downplay what he did. He was awesome. Period. That doesn’t mean the decision not to sign him to a huge contract wasn’t the right decision. It probably was, but that has nothing to do with how he performed while he was here.
    ***
I’m not worried about the short passing game. That’s the easiest aspect of a pass attack to make work. I want to see us actually threaten the middle and deep middle of the field for a change. If we can’t start backing defenses off the LOS, we will not be successful. We need to start getting more chunk yards and not have to make 14 play drives to score a FG. We also need to focus on actually running the ball effectively. That should be our focus not throwing 4 yard passes to munchkins. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He ran the high percentage routes and was durable so yeah he did a good job there. He was our version of Welker and Edelman. I’m with you on your 2nd paragraph. Part of the problem with backing defenses off the LOS was even when we were in 3 WR sets, Gase said teams played base defense against it. Landry was covered by LBs and safeties and we didn’t have the TE to make them pay.

You have to admit changing that charge call in game 1 was BS, if you can review one judgement call than you should be able to review them all. The call was a charge Cavs ball. No way should they be able to over turn that call.

It changed the series, if Clev would have been up 1-0 after game 1 it would have gave them confidence and would have demoralized GSW.

I’m not much on conspiracy theories however if you go back to game 7 Rockets vs GSW, it was the worst officiated game i had ever seen.
It’s almost as if the league and the refs were determining their champ.

If i was a player on GSW i would not be celebrating, it was a hollow victory and the had no business being there in the first place, the Rockets out played them.

what do you do with Simmons? he and Lebron have similar games, Simmons won’t be that good without the ball as he can’t shoot, They also don’t have the playoff pedigree that Miami has.
do you want to live in Philadelphia…… They have a state tax, Lebron is familiar with Miami, South Beach…. no state tax..
the Rockets are cash strapped and does Lebron want to play in the western conference?

It will be interesting to see where he goes?

I would think Miami or stay put in Cleve

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Didn’t say that bringing in Lebron wouldn’t mean a shake up of any given team. And do you think Simmons has some trade value? Heat are definitely possible though. But like said before….think he is out of Cleveland. His supporting cast not so good. They beat the Celts in 7 who didn’t have Kyrrie or Hayward.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think there are other factors they may have Lebron staying put in Cleve, such as his family, Cleve is their home, do you want to uproot your family? and if you do familiarity of Miami may go a long way in the deciding factor.

IMO I can’t see Philly or the west, Maybe Boston though

ORob, you are exactly right on game one. Not only was reversing that call serious BS, especially when their officiating analyst said it was a charge, but the two CLev’s possessions before that reversed call Lebron was hacked causing turnovers and no fouls were called. This allowed GSW to catch up and eventually be able to tie the game. Even the announcers called it bad “no-call’s”. The game never should have went to overtime and cav’s should have won. I didn’t watch anymore of the series after that. Didn’t want to see anymore BS.

They said what triggered the review was the question whether Lebron was in the restricted area, it wasn’t even close, he was 3 feet outside that area and if they had any doubts by looking up at the big screen they should be able to tell that without going to the table and reviewing it. they used a loop hole to help GSW

Lebron may have been moving a little bit but was clearly there in time IMO, even if it was close you can’t change that call without IMO opening a can of worms.

It’s a judgement call, the game is filled with judgement calls that are not reviewable, if you are able to reverse the call on one then you should be able to do that on all judgement calls that come into question, at that point the game would be way too long.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Being able to reverse tgat call was BS, but it was 100% a foul on James. Clev should’ve won game 1, but they were never winning the series.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I disagree, even Steve Javy who’s been a ref in this league for years said it was a charge right there on live TV after looking at the replay. The ref under the basket also confirmed a charge.

he got to that spot, he was still sliding a little but he had already attained his position. furthermore there shouldn’t have been a review in the first place, the rule states that if the play is questionably close to the restricted line then they can review it and other circumstances kick in at that point. he was way outside the restricted area, not even close,

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It’s a stupid rule, a loophole for the league to be a big part in the outcome of games. there are other stupid rules as well.
how about when a player pump fakes, gets the defender up in the air and jumps into him? the offensive player is the one initiating the contact and the defensive player gets called, or how about the rip move, when a def player is extending his arms the offensive player rips up and thru his arms initiating the contact then shoots, the offensive player gets the call.

        stupidity beyond belief!

Thought that the THill “”miked’up””” while “”coachin’up””” Gesicki was really cool back and forth interaction!!!

“”””On an excellent video feature recently produced by the Miami Dolphins social media team, a wired Tannehill literally runs the route for Gesicki, verbalizing exactly what he needs the rookie to do.
“Sell the takeoff,” Tannehill is telling Gesicki, as he demonstrates the route. “Once you get to eight, step in the ground. The ball should be in the air.”
After they run the play successfully, Tannehill tells Gesicki: “Good work. Keep doing it. You’re getting better each and every day. Have your notes on what you want to hit. Come out here and work on it. That’s what this time of year is for, to get better. A little bit better, each and every day. Keep it up.”
Replies Gesicki: “All right, boss. Appreciate you.”
Tannehill was, of course, a very successful wide receiver and quarterback at Texas A&M.
“I was nowhere near the route-runner that any of these guys are, so I can’t say that I can do it any better; but I have been in their shoes so to speak of feeling how a practice is, feeling how the heat affects you through a practice and can kind of relate a little bit,” Tannehill said. “As far as coaching guys up on what I’m expecting in routes, I think when you get in the first year of an offense, it’s a little tougher because you’re learning the offense yourself. You’re trying to understand what the coach wants, how you see it and how that blends together. As you move to Year 2 and Year 3, you can really take ownership of it and say ‘Okay, this is what I want. I need you to be right here at this time.’”
Rookies like Gesicki, Durham Smythe and Kalen Ballage will be leaning heavily on Tannehill. “”” Produc

Sorry for the mix up, and I thought your opinion of Krauthammer was spot on. He’s truly a remarkable individual, and I truly love his thoughts and opinions; I’ve been a big fan of his for nearly two decades.

OCALAROB and PHELON: –I read your comments on the Belmont with interest. Here’s ANOTHER FACT to consider. Many have said that athletes from the bygone era of the 1970’s could NOT compete with today’s “bigger, faster, stronger athletes.” Most just accept that as fact.
WELL PONDER THIS: Secretariat’s winning time in the 1973 Belmont was 2:24 flat. Justify’s winning time yesterday was 2:28.18, which is more than FOUR FULL SECONDS behind Secretariat’s winning time. Secretariat’s 2:24 time for the mile and a half HAS NOT BEEN BEATEN BY ANY HORSE ON ANY TRACK IN THE WORLD FOR THE LAST 45 YEARS!!!
Now I realize that horses and humans are different. But I believe that the very greatest athletes from the bygone era, with the benefit of modern training techniques, could, and WOULD, prosper in the modern era, too. THAT’s WHY it is proper to give them their due respect.
    ———————
DAN MARINO has not played an NFL game this century. He retired in 1999. Does anyone on this board REALLY BELIEVE THAT, AT HIS PEAK, MARINO COULD NOT PLAY IN 2018?? If your answer is “YES” then you didn’t see Dan play in person for 17 seasons as I did.

Horse racing is a brutal sport, most horses don’t survive as they run them to death.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

The Key phrase used was “with the benefits of modern training techniques.” That, nutrition, and philosophy are what has changed the players. A player of the 70s/80s, trained in the methods of his time, could not compete with today’s athletes. Quarterbacks are different, I think. They are not always athletes as much as having natural abilities that allow them to process information on the field faster and turn it into decisions and motion. Marino’s ability to see the open spot and then have the eye hand coordination to deliver the ball to that spot while instantly calculating multiple speed factors, trajectory, and environmental affects would play well in any era.

Rob is right about horse racing. I don’t usually watch it. Justify will probably live out his life in comfort as a stud now, but most of the rest of the field will be run until they break down on a track somewhere. Then in the best case they are given away to someone who will rehab them and use them for breeding programs. Probably more often they are just put down.

Best shot ever, Parr FOUR, and I knocked it in for eagle TWO from 150 yards from enter of fairway, first and only eagle ever!!!

My butt head buddy rarely broke 90, and the F’er got a hole in one from 170!!! Us old guys didn’t even realize it, the youngster group behind us starting cheering, and we’re all WTF, and they say your Buddy just got a hole in one, so my group started cheering, too funny!!! We’ve called him ACE ever since, F’er .. 😍 ⛳!!!

Certain BUNKERS on certain courses are my nemesis, way back when I got a 12 on a 3, kept crossing the green from one bunker to the other, (in frustration upon the first attempt), Mann that was ugly!!!

I Usually hit low to mid 80’s, capable of 90’s plus on a bad day, break 80 once in a while, best ever was a 75 on 72 on a day like your best when everything fell, goin for a first ever Parr round, got nervous/tight on 17 and went OB X 2 for a 30plus one putt triple on a 4, DAMNNN!!!

HARD to put two thirty something’s together on the same day, had many 30 something nines (front or back), but usually the other nine is a mid to late 40 something…
