Camp Battles – CB

This was somewhat of a beleaguered group last season.  Tony Lippett was out for the season with an achilles injury, and we had to sign veteran CB Alterraun Verner, who played in 15 games for us with 2 starts.  Rookie Cordrea Tankersley was pressed into action, and had some good moments and some bad ones, starting and playing in 11 games last season.  Only 2 CB’s on the Dolphins current roster played in all 16 games last season, Xavien Howard and Bobby McCain.  As far as consistency goes, McCain was our best CB last season.  Xavien Howard had a stretch at the end of last season that was All-Pro caliber.  There is definitely promise in this group, and one such promising figure is 2017 UDFA Torry McTyer, who has been opening eyes in training camp.  Here’s the lowdown on all of our CB’s.

Xavien Howard CB – 6’1 192  – 25YO

“X” ended the season with a flourish.  He had all 4 of his INT’s in 2 games, 2 in the Denver game, and 2 against New England, and one against Denver was for a TD.  That was his breakout, and although he didn’t get an additional INT, he was playing as close to shutdown corner as you can get.  He finished the season with 48 tackles (42 solo), 13 passes defensed, 1 sack,  and 4 INT’s (1 for a TD).  So we know who one of the starters is, as X will be one of them.  If he can continue his strong play from the end of last season, we’re going to have a very strong secondary.

____________________________________________________

Cordrea Tankersley CB – 6’1 200 – 24YO

Our 3rd RD pick in the 2017 NFL Draft (#97), the Clemson product was forced to start 11 games last season due to injuries in the secondary.  He was up and down, showing flashes of good play, and then as expected, looking lost at times too.  His spot is definitely up for grabs, he has no such “lock” on the spot opposite X.  He’s going to have to be more consistent, and also find the football.  In 11 games starts, Cordrea had zero INT’s.  He did finish with 31 tackles and 7 passes defensed.  Competition is coming for that spot, so Cordrea is on notice!

____________________________________________________

Bobby McCain CB – 5’11 192 – 25YO

Good ol’ Bobby McCain had quite the season last year.  He was so consistent playing mostly in the slot, that the Dolphins rewarded him with a 4YR/$27M contract.  According the depth chart the Dolphins released, he’s opposite Xavien Howard, but I don’t pay much attention to that.  Bobby is a slot CB, even with rookie draftee Minkah Fitzpatrick, who does the very same and a lot more, I think McCain will be on the inside almost exclusively this year as always.  The 2015 5th RD pick has done well for himself, an excellent draft pick for sure.

___________________________________________________

Tony Lippett CB – 6’3 192 – 26YO

Lippett had a very nice 2016 season, but then missed the entire 2017 season with an achilles injury.  Lippett showed great ball skills in coverage, finishing the 2016 season with 68 tackles, (45 solo), 10 passes defensed, and 4 INT’s.  The tall, former WR played the ball very well as if he were the intended receiver.  It’s a long recovery though, and Lippett left scrimmage the other day with an ankle injury.  I’m not sure how much Lippett can contribute this season, but I’m pulling for him.  If he can get healthy, I think he can be an impact player, but I’m not sure how much that injury has robbed his speed and cutting ability.  Time will tell, and we’ll see if he get himself whole again.

___________________________________________________

Torry McTyer CB – 5’11 188 – 23YO

So far in the 2018 Dolphins training camp, he is the darling of the secondary.  The 2017 UDFA who was signed by the Dolphins last May is really showing well early on training camp.  The speedy UNLV product played in 7 games last season for Miami, mostly on ST’s.  At the moment, he is listed 3rd on the depth chart the Dolphins put out before the preseason.  How much does that matter?  According to McTyer, it doesn’t.  He’s going to keep playing hard, taking nothing for granted, and making the most of his opportunities.  Although slightly shorter than most of the other Dolphins CB’s, McTyer has good speed, equal to or better than all of them. We’ll see if Cinderella can continue to shine.

__________________________________________________

Jalen Davis CB – 5’10 185 – 22YO

Davis was an UDFA signed out of Utah St.  The former All-American CB was a non invitee to the NFL combine, a snub that reportedly fuels Davis.  He showed well at his pro day running a 4.4 40, putting up 11 reps and soaring to a 36″ vertical.  The 4 YR starter at Utah St. finished his college career with 11 INT’s, 4 FF, and 4 TD’s.  He will have to battle to make the roster.

___________________________________________________

Cornell Armstrong CB – 6’0 185 – 22YO

The Dolphins drafted Armstrong in the 6th RD of the 2018 NFL Draft (#209).  A 4 year starter for Southern Mississippi,  he finished his career with 5 INT’s, 1 for a TD.  Armstrong has had a slow start so far in training camp, and as we all know, he better pick it up, or he will find himself handing in his playbook sooner than later.

___________________________________________________

Taveze Calhoun CB – 6’1 188 –  25YO

Signed originally by the Bears as an UDFA then released, and signed by the Saints.  The Saints released him in December of ’17, and the Dolphins signed him to the PS.  In January, Miami signed him to a future/reserves contract.  Another cornerback from Mississippi, but Mississippi St. in this case, totaled 6 INT’s in 3 years, also forcing 3 fumbles and recovering 1.  Another longshot to make the roster, he faces an uphill battle. Tavese (pronounced Tuh-VEZ) had 2 INT’s in practice and a fumble return (60 YDS) for a TD, so don’t count him out quite yet.

___________________________________________________

So that’s where we’re at with the CB’s.  I wouldn’t count Tank out of starting opposite X, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if Lippett was on the PUP to start the season.  I just have a feeling he might not be ready.  I hope McTyer keeps pushing, and pushing hard, that will make Tank earn it if he wins that battle.  I also hope X keeps balling, and doesn’t rest on his late year success.  I also realize that I haven’t included Minkah Fitzpatrick in this group, because he’s the guy who will be playing everywhere, including both inside and outside in certain situations as a CB.  Basically, he’s going to be a matchup guy, so Minkah will be everywhere.  Good ol’ Bobby McCain is steady as can be, and I hope he continues in that vein.  next up, safeties!

back up qbs all looked pretty damn good, Petty is right there, will be interesting to see who gets number 2

    • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

Liked some of what Petty did,
But looks like a side armed guy,

Reminded me of (with slight exaggeration) submarine pitcher Dan Quissenberry

Liked some of his completions a lot, TD and play before (both to Ford) were things of beauty!!!

  2. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Baker looks like the real deal

  3. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the only one who seemed dissapointing was geysecki

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

that was a great pass thrown to hin in the endzone and he couldn’t come down with it.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

It was overthrown, had Gesicki made that great catch, he’d have landed outta bounds!!!

        “””Couldn’t come down with it”””,
None here coulda touched/caught it with a 10 foot long pool cleaning net!!!

Him just touching that ball was farrr from “””disappointing”””!!!

    vintage Drake

He also got the ball on a 4th and one with his shoe half off,
      AND CONVERTED!!!

    LOL @ Vintage!!

  6. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I heard nothing about McMillan, how’d he play?

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The players that stood out to me were Minkah, Baker, Wilson, and Ballage but then am a notorious ball watcher. And man did it look clear Fales was gonna be the #2 QB, but have the same concerns about him as Moore when it comes to the real deal when teams game plan around what you can do best. Just don’t see the arm.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can gameplan around Fales to win the games you’re supposed to win, but he won’t get you a ring, so the hope is he can hold down the fort while your starter is out a minute. Osweiler has the skillset to get you a ring, but the consistency to frustrate you.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wasn’t a good night for Osweiler and they were alternating series so no who was playing with the better guys involved.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sometimes not noticing a player like McMillan is a good thing.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“The protection was awesome. Ryan was back there peeling an orange.”
    — Gase on the starting OL last night.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw #52 and #55 around the ball together a few times. The thing with PS games and especially the first one is there are so many substitutions you don’t get a feel for any unit. But then again it’s a “practice” game.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The hardest part about judging things in a preseason game is the motivation of the coaches. Jackson for Baltimore last week didn’t look very good, but it was obvious the Bears were intent on stopping him.

We’re a depth heavy team, so to say our 1s vs their 1s wasn’t good therefore we’ll suck doesn’t tell the whole story. If we can move the ball and score the D will hold off our opponents enough to get us to where we want to go. I’m not talking about record setting just play complimentary football.

When the O is having issues the D needs to step up and vice versa.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Your first point was spot on. We don’t know what the coaches want to see. Winning the game in the preseason is not the goal. They want to evaluate players. If winning was the goal you don’t inactivate some of your top players. For some reason people can’t wrap their head around that.

For years friends of mine would say who cares, the starters only play a series or two. I always say, I watch for the opposite reason to see the rooks, young guys expected to take that next step and to see which bubble guys step up.

    • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

Totally agree with Knight X’s two!!!

Here’s some of what I saw previous to page turn…
Had to copy paste from Shout, copy/paste takes forever here from phone..
    Ignore edit, time, reply stuff..

What a catch by Grant even though he landed outta bounds, best catch ever, tight tight coverage streaking down sidelines, (pass interference called, and Grant still did a superman snatched the overthrow back half of the ball with octopus suction cupped fingertips, Woww what a catch!!!

Right before the EZ overthrow to Gesicki that almost was a great catch in itself,
but even had he caught it te QB/Fales overthrow had him landing outta bounds too…

    THill worked through a 1St & 20 hole for a first down!!!
Man, we were in 1St & 20 a lot in o17, and rarely overcame!!!
Thought that Amendola (had he just kept running)
would have had a better chance at that THill ball he dove for off ten fingertips
at the 10 yard line… End result, missed FG

I thought the O did a lot of good things under all QB’s,
D too for that matter, think that Fitz & Baker moved closer to starting,
Looking forward to a great season!!!

So I finally got to see the Fins first D play,
And see that Fitz STARTED at Safety up tight/LOS vs slot receiver,
same side as X, with Tank on other side vs no receiver.

Ball was completed by a fingernail vs X

Second play Fitz blitzes from S position

Both plays (just before snap) looked like a 4 – 4 moreso than a 4-3
If not for knowing Fitz number, I’d a thought it was 4DL & 4LB,
10 guys were in frame, only TJ was back..

Wonder how its gonna go when Rashad is active??

Really wanting Jones, TJ, & Fitz on the field together more than not!!!
Shoot, throw in Baker too, GOTTA NEED FOR SPEED !!!

    PS…

Jarvis NEVER made a catch like the one Grant made
(though outta bounds due to overthrow)

    Ohhh Yea,
First play of game THill rolls out right and throws 15 yard strike to Stills !!!!!

Completed first 4 attempts, hair off on other two though they hit receivers fingers…
First & only THill drive went well, other than holding penalty to force 1St & 20
which ended up with a first down, and then the drive ending missed FG..

And yeah that catch/not catch by Grant was awesome, but then Wilson looked great to. Surprised me on the routes he was hitting….was heading to the outside. He might not be that one trick catch and dash pony was thinking.

In the PS you look for execution and assignment recognition. Were guys in the right spot and making the right adjustments? Were players disciplined in their responsibilities? Were there a lot of penalties? Did the new guys look lost or like they knew what to do? And at the end….avoid injuries while you hopefully develop a little confidence in what you’re doing. It’s a starting point. Keep building.

Lucky too, cuz a severe lightning storm messed up last night recording..

Got home 2 hours later than the planned 6pm est,
Had a rough day, cursing & swearing from 4-8 pm cuz it became obvious that I wouldn’t make it home on time for pre-game rituals…

Then the minute I got home from working in triple digits all day,
a nice cool storm rolls in, and just as I finally sit down to watch the last 2 minutes of the first half a lightning strike knocks out my power…

Took like a half hour to get TV going again, and though I had connection, a connection problem warning was taking up half my screen (so I was cursing/throwing a fit for another hour to total 5 hours), and though I made sure to reset record, nothing after the last two minutes of the first half recorded…

So after watching the second half live,
I went back to watch the whole game in its entirety,
low & behold, I ended up cursing/throwing a fit till midnight,
8 hours of frustration, worse than my actual day if work…

Schiish, been waiting/planning for that game for 8 months,
And couldn’t get there, nothing went right for me yesterday,
Probably cuz the higher powers knew how excited I was,
and just wanted to F with me, MANN THEY HAVE A LOUSY SENSE OF HUMOR!!!

Even though I don’t think kneeling during the anthem will have any impact on anything, the players who do it are not kneeling to protest the military and vets. It’s to bring awareness to injustice. Again, I don’t think that the impact will be what they’re looking for, but that’s their decision. Too many people have made it out to be something that it’s not. But we shouldn’t be surprised, people argue over everything these days even when they don’t know what they’re talking about.

But I agree with you that too much is being made of it and it’s time to move on. At this point people have made up their minds on what they think it means and are either okay with it or hate it.

They’re protesting injustice – specifically racial injustice and police brutality. They are not protesting against all cops or just white ones. I have a problem with hot headed cops who think they are above the law too. There are wonderful officers and assholes and I happen to know of both of them. I know of cops who are racist and don’t have the level of tolerance needed to be a cop, but they are. There are bad people in this world in all walks of life and some are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Lousiana and some parts of Mississippi are the only place i have been where its worse lol. Deer flies are really bad down there. Id consider them worse than mosquitoes. There are also these neon yellow colored flies down there that are kinda shaped more like a horsefly just not quite as big. They can lay it on ya. There are also horseflies, and yellow flies. A lot of costal Florida is like that. Hell, at Disney teh deer and yellow flies can make taking the Safari tour, the Jungle Cruise, and even the WDW Train ride around the park be a memorable (lots of welts)experience.

    • D's avatar D says:

Our Deer are smallish, Florida Whitetail are small and they never get very big, 100lbs is getting into the “big” zone when it comes to the deer. There is a lot to d down there if ya like outdoorsy stuff. The scalloping season is a fun time, you can get buckets full of scallops if you get there before they have been picked clean. Plenty of blue crabs if you like crabbing. The bay is walking depth for miles so you can get an aluminum boat and just walk it out for a while and then paddle out further and sometimes catch some nice fish. Its an estuary too so you can see lots of different marine life. My favorite are the puffer fish, i like showing the kids those and the horshoe crabs, which i have never seen more of those, in any one spot, than there. Tons of fiddler crabs (which make great bait btw, and are free to scoop up). The sea shells off cap san blas are usually more intact than you will find the rest of the way around the gulf coast, wasnt long back i was still finding whole sand dollars.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh and if ya like fresh water fishing, just up the road in Wewahitchka there is some of the best bass fishing around, and really good for Brim too. Hunting is pretty good there too, lots of turkeys, deer and hogs.

No doubt about it, this part of the protests is the attention getter, not the solution maker. At some point the social change has to stand on it’s own merit and it will have to have enough people behind it to not need the attention grabber. This isn’t just so there isn’t continued tension, but also because that attention getter is going to lose it’s power. The article tells me he is doing his part with the other, which makes him infinitely more valuable to this cause than Kaepernick, but if he wants to recruit more to get on board and follow his lead, he has to increase his exposure off the field and not on it.

It is, though each of our costs offer its own sort of charm with its own set of things its superior to other coasts in. Sheer scenic beauty though, gulf coast, hands down.

  36. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Naples (incl. Marco Island) is the last American town South on the Gulf of Mexico.
(I consider Key West to be in the Caribbean, because it’s a coral reef, not a white sand beach.)
But it’s somewhat similar to Pensacola, which is 600 miles away.
Because the Atlantic is sooo much colder, even at the same latitude, and soooo much rougher in wave action, the Gulf beaches are very different from East coast beaches.

    But I love them both.

    http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/24342005/maryland-terrapins-football-culture-toxic-coach-dj-durkin

I had heard about the football players death but i had not heard about the rest of this until now. This is disgusting. Coaches can be like that, there are some whose philosophy as coaches is exactly what you see here. My coaches in HS was like this to a degree, maybe not quite as over the top but definitely to a point of abusive.

I remember one time where it backfired on them. A coach was wanting me to do a walk through with him so he could instruct one of the other players on how to do something. I had pads, he didnt, so i came out of my stance cautiously so as not to hurt him. He demeaned me in front of the others, basically calling me a pussy for how i had hit him. He said go again, so i went harder that time but i still held back because, again, im going to hurt him if i go full force. Same thing again, demeaned me. He said seriously give me everything you got so i can show them how to do this, hit me like ya got a pair. So i did…. broke his glasses, sent him flying, grass stains all over his white shorts, busted his lip and nose. I do have to give it to him, when he got up i was expecting him to tear into me but he accepted the fact he had asked for it lol. It felt kinda good too lol.

That said, i never really was botherd by the demeaning, or the yelling and screaming they do. That a very military way to break individualism and get people to be part of a unit with one commander that the players will not question the authority of. I didn’t need all that though, i knew he was the authority figure on the field so i was already listening. Still i also knew it was a tactic that worked with some players so thats what he did.

That guy actually passed away recently, a day before my dad did. My dad and he had played football together in HS as well, and their coach was pretty much the same type of guy, as i understand it from my dad’s stories.

Either way, i think these coaches need to soften up a little. Football players do need to be touch, but there is a line where it becomes abuse, and also times have changed, its just not as effective as it was back in the day. Being that way towards the kids isnt going to change them or shape them up like they think it is. The culture is completely different now. I think what was done at the U of Maryland is pretty damn disgusting and i hold they hold them accountable for all that shit.

Then the O has no problem moving the ball, over 5 yds per rush, a little trouble getting the ball in the endzone though.

Besides the score, if you could swap out one result for another which would it be? For example would you rather we gave up only 200 yds passing, but 160 yards rushing?

Last year our run D was hot or cold based on when in the drive the run took place, early hot late cold. This year expect to see nothing special in the run D, then when you look at the stats say we weren’t that bad 28 carries for 100.

WR’s are usually faster, quicker because they’re leaner, they don’t need or want to be a receiver debilitating bulky

Maybe Stills is bigger boned, has a bigger brain, or what Steve suggested ,or all the above to match Fitz’s (bigger padded) larger appearance

The apparent stream of consciousness was funny to me as Naples rolled it out. Stangerx’ OCD comment was a good/funny way to put it, too, imo.

The interesting thing to me is that they DO match up….size matters. A 5-9 corner most times will lose against a 6-1 wr and vice versa…..just saying most times as a big body is just bigger and can block out. Gronk is a terror, can Gesicki or Smythe be? Minkah has size and speed, better match-ups on the other side, too.

I think we have better size and speed on both sides of the ball this year, and maybe in a long time. Not saying we’re there, just better. We shall see in when we go live.

Until then, it’s practice, and practice makes perfect.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Dont tell Grimes, hes too small to cover Calvin Johnson. It’s about position, if Johnson has a step and the ball is thrown so that Grimes or someone short has to first get to the receiver before jumping, he doesn’t have much of a chance, but if hes in good position…

Also the size disparity some of these guys face. Most RBs are 100 pounds less than the DL that they are running into. Most DTs run about 305-315.

The QB position is also a problem this year with the danger of Ryan being hurt again. Should we keep Petty and Fales both on the 53?

Since we did not draft a late rounder, we have no QB who can go on the PS as an emergency.

That way if our #1 went down, we’d play our #2 and bring up the young guy as our new #2.

It didn’t work for Philbin, and it won’t work for Gase. Ross needs to sell the team, or let someone else make all of the personnel decisions (starting with firing Gase, Grier, and Tannenbaum).

IMO this is the best news out of PSG1 (along with no major injuries). We’re only a couple weeks in with a month to go before opening day. These guys should continue to get better together. We may finally field a consistent oline.

If our oline is stout, I have confidence in our QB and playmakers ability to move the ball. Add a real (potential) RZ threat in Gesicki, which will also open up the running game in the RZ, and it’s easy to be excited about this offense.

Today’s TAMPA BAY TIMES rates all the starting QB’s in the NFL. The first reporter rates Tannehill 24th out of the starting 32 QB’s; the second reporter rates Tanny 28th out of 32. —-While I’ve never believed that Tanny is the next Dan Marino, I’ve always thought that he’s suffered from playing behind below average to horrible offensive lines. Will things change this year? Will the latest O-Line created by T-Baum and Gase actually develop into a top 10 NFL product?? The early (VERY early) returns are encouraging as Tanny was well protected in his brief appearance against Tampa Bay. We got a brief glimpse at what the future MIGHT have in store for unhappy Dolphin fans who’ve been waiting 17 years for just one playoff victory. But, remember, that was the BUCCANEERS we were talking about, NOT the Eagles or the Patriots.
    ———————————
ANOTHER DETERRENT to Tanny’s overall rating is the recent performance of Miami’s DEFENSE, which has allowed too many NFL offenses to march up and down the field and control the game clock, particularly when the game was on the line. You can’t lead the Fins to a come from behind victory when you are sitting on the bench. And, too often, Miami has seen winnable games get away from them as their weak defense floundered in the fourth quarter. SADLY, that trait appeared again in the game against Tampa Bay as their patch work O-Line dominated Miami’s defense. BUT, it’s still early. Perhaps Raekwon, Minkah, and the rest of the defense can rise up in what’s left of the pre-season.
    ——————————-
If BOTH of those issues are successfully addressed, I believe Tanny can rise to the middle of the pack as an NFL starting QB, or, perhaps, even a bit better than that. But, before that can happen, this team must SHOW ME. From ownership to the GM to the scouting department to the coaching staff, this franchise HAS FAILED TO SHOW ME for the last 9 seasons. —Maybe, just maybe, this will be the season that changes all that!

      Great Optimism OD.
I’m also cautiously hopeful for this season.
I’m hoping Gase and our new coaches game plan better, adjust better during games, and refrain from snorting coke off strippers’ butts between film sessions. After that,
It just depends on our blockers, RBs, new WRs, rookie TEs, and rebuilt QB on offense.
On Defense my main concerns are the DTs stopping the run, getting enough pass rush, our rebuilt LB corps, and getting way more INTs out of our DBs.
Of course, we have to hope that our unproven Kicker doesn’t lose us any games either.
If so and the weather holds and no one gets hurt, we should have a playoff team.

ROSS & T-BAUM thought his pay raise demand was “unrealistic,” so they brought in TWO kickers, NEITHER OF WHOM has tried as much as one FG in the NFL!!!
