Oh here in Miami, fans should definitely be doing the safety dance. This is easily the best collection of safety talent in quite some time. In 2011, we had Yeremiah Bell and Reshad Jones, but Reshad was just getting his career started at that point. This is now the best unit on this team. I know Minkah Fitzpatrick is just a rookie, but I think you can throw out the typical rookie plan, this kid is special, and and he’s not going to be overwhelmed by anything he sees in the NFL. He was used like a pro at Alabama, exposed to just about everything playing multiple positions and assignments at Alabama. Nick Saban said he was his best player, and he could handle anything, and that’s high praise indeed. We know what Reshad is, he’s a playmaker who can make things happen against the run or pass. T.J. McDonald didn’t get a full shot here because he was suspended for 8 games, but this former Rams strong safety can lay the wood, and has had over 100 tackles in a season. The talent drops off after the super trio, but maybe this is the year that either Walt Aikens or Jordan Lucas take a step forward, learning from Jones, McDonald and Minkah. Or, maybe Maurice Smith steals the last spot.
Reshad Jones S – 6’1 215 – 30YO
Reshad has done it all as a Miami Dolphins safety. Drafted in the 5th RD (#163) in the 2010 NFL draft, he’s been one of our best draft picks in that time period, if not the best. Annually racks up 100 or more tackles, and has 18 INT’s and 10.5 sacks so far in his career, along with 5 TD’s, 3 on INT returns and 2 on fumble returns. Playmaker! He can play near the LOS, and also has the speed to make plays on the back end. A leader on this team, and one that should hopefully be a career Dolphin.

T.J. McDonald S – 6’2 225 – 27YO
The former Rams Strong safety is a lot like Reshad in that he can play close to the LOS or make plays deep as well. He’s a very good athlete, but hasn’t been anything like the playmaker Reshad has been. Still, he tackles well, and can cover, and can be used like a safety or a linebacker, so he brings versatility. Both he and Reshad can be part of the new formation that’s sweeping the NFL for the last few years, the Big Nickel. That means sometimes deploying a combination of big defensive backs, usually safeties replacing the smaller nickel corner. I look forward to seeing a lot of T.J., Reshad and Minkah on the field together this season.

Minkah Fitzpatrick S – 6’1 202 – 21YO
The great thing about Minkah Fitzpatrick to me is the fact that while playing for Nick Saban, Saban used him in so many different situations, and Minkah succeeded in all of them. He wasn’t just a guy who was versatile enough to play multiple positions, he was excellent enough to do it better than anyone else. That’s the key right there, some guys are versatile, and can do things adequately at a few different things. Not Minkah, he kills it everywhere. We got a taste of what he’s capable of in the very first preseason game. That play where a completion was certain, but Minkah closed with a quick burst and was able to get to the receiver and cause him to drop the football. I saw him making tackles and defending the pass all over the field. good things are coming, no GREAT things are coming for this player.

Maurice Smith S – 6’0 194 – 23YO
Right now, Maurice Smith is 4th on the depth chart, ahead of Walt Aikens and Jordan Lucas. The former Alabama, then Georgia safety was picked up by the Dolphins last season as an UDFA. So far in training camp, according to HC Adam Gase said this of Smith . . .“I think his confidence level is extremely high right now,” Gase said. “He understands the defense. It’s allowing him to play faster.” Whether he can continue to impress remains to be seen. Smith played in 6 games last season for the Dolphins.

Jordan Lucas S – 6’0 190 – 25YO
Lucas was a 2016 6th RD pick (204th). He appeared in 8 games in ’16, and 11 games in ’17 playing mostly special teams. The former Nittany Lion safety is now 5th on the depth chart, and that’s not a great place to be, especially if we only carry 4 safeties. Last year for the most season we carried 4 safeties, but in December we carried 5. If Smith stays ahead of Lucas, Lucas could definitely be on the roster bubble.

Walt Aikens S – 6’1 208 – 27YO
Aikens is really a player w/o a true position. The Dolphins have been shuffling him around from S to CB since they drafted him back in the 4th RD (#125) in the 2014 NFL Draft. in 2015, Aikens started 5 games, but otherwise has mostly been a ST’s player, but has played in almost every game since ’14. He’s show he’s durable, and is a good special teams player, but it seems like at this juncture, he’s no more than that.

So that’s our safety situation. Depending upon how many CB’s and how many WR’s we keep will probably impact how many safeties we choose to keep, and keep in mind that if Aikens is stowed on the CB depth chart, he’s a guy who can also play safety. It’s the top 3 though, that should give Miami Dolphins fans something to really look forward to. Reshad and T.J. are a great tandem as is, so just think how much Minkah elevates the defense? I know I do all the time!

Fitspatrick is like a laser honing in on his target. He can surprise a RB by filling a lane at the last minute with a physical sure handed tackle. And in the secondary he’s a versatile beast! Once he gets comfortable in our backfield, He will generate tons of plays and help us win games!

Cousins is nothing special. His stats are pretty similar to Tannehill as has the results of the team he has lead. Like Tannehill he is a starting caliber QB but he is not elite. He is now on a team with an elite level of talent. It will be interesting to see how he does this year

It’s not all bad we seem to move between the 20s with the greatest of ease. Howard and Fitz will settle the back end, Ryan seems ready to breakout, Quinn and Wake should be a great duo, Amendola and Albert can surely get open, and Gesicki is going to score a lot, but something isn’t quite right.
The team is very young and still has some big holes to fill especially LB and DT
I wonder what Gase would take to unload Parker? Everyone knows we are deep on receivers… surely someone is whispering to the coach. Maybe Seattle???

we’ve not had the luxury of a consistent reasonable down and distance on 3rd down, if its 3rd and 13 the D knows where you have to go to get to the first down, the dbs play deep and they send the pass rush.
it’s a very easy fix…run the ball effectively on 1st down which i’m sure we will see a lot of Gore.
this is pre season, i wouldn’t buy into any of that…most good teams lose all their pre season games and the bad ones win them all.
I heard in the presser Gore is chomping at the bit to play, Gase was asked if we will see Gore Saturday?….he said i can’t tell you right now…he said if i do and say “no” i will have to deal with an angry Gore all week long.
I don’t blame him for not playing Gore in pre season, he’s our only hope to have a decent season.

I don’t see us being a high tempo, high production team. That’s not something you just become because you want to. It takes a long time to develop that sort of precision. We’re nowhere close. I’d focus more on getting our running game where it can be at least effective. But, I don’t think Gase will.
I believe to be a high tempo offense you have to be unpredictable, passing every down does not achieve that, if you can impose your will in the running game then you can get to the 2nd level of the D successfully as they have to play up to stop the running game, running the ball effectively and converting 3rd downs also helps your D get much needed rest.
Gore is probably the best power rb there is, the only problem is we have no one behind him if he gets injured.
I see 2 completely different offenses, depending on who is in the game. With Drake in expect more of a big play up tempo offense, throwing more on 1st down, with Gore I see more running on 1st down and more game management type of plays, with more play action. I think the switch back and forth is going to confuse the D. Is Drake in, is Gore in…oh shot it was Drake and there he goes with a spin move to the outside.

Yesterday am waiting for the light to take a left into a six lane road and watched what must have been three of the local mean girls high school click at work (all hot and dressed about the same). They crossed against the red hand as if it was their personal road, hit the median (landscaping involved) and then one of them stepped her foot over and was about two feet from getting bashed from a car going 35 (the speed limit).
The one who almost got hit was shaken for good reason, the one in the middle didn’t say anything, the one in the back yelled A-hole at the top of her lungs…. and then they all ran across the rest of the way like a bomb had gone off. Afterwards got to watch the one in the middle have a crying meltdown and the other two give her a group hug. Reminded me why was lucky those types and I never got along much.

I’m not sure I think it’s all about whether or not Gase will run. I know he has run the ball in other offenses. I just don’t think with all we’ve seen and heard that he will have the patience to run the ball. I think, just my opinion, that he thinks points come from the air. Plus, if he doesn’t win this year, he may not be around much longer. That pressure doesn’t lend itself to a lot of running…nobody has the patience for it anymore. And, if our OL doesn’t start showing that they can move people, I’m not so sure I can second guess Gase if he doesn’t have the patience to run the ball. Players need to execute, but I hope we see a little more patience with the running game.

An uptempo style is based on timing and precision. If you can’t run plays without getting a flag every 4th play, you can never up the tempo. You also need to be able to convert 3rd downs! Run or pass….it doesn’t matter. Most teams try to go as fast as possible. More plays….more chance to get points is the idea. But you need precision and discipline in your execution to get there. We haven’t seen any of that in years.

Wyo, it will be both with Drake and Gore. Why is this so difficult to understand for people? I still say at the end of the day, Drake will lead the team in touches. Gore will play a vital role though because he has a knack for finding creases and he runs so low he can get 2-3 yards when you need it. Drake will have plenty of productive runs and some big ones. Gore will also make some plays in the passing game.

Even if ya take McCaffrey’s 77-yard run out, we’d have given up 155 rushing yards… not good. But the fact of the matter is that ya can’t take McCaffrey’s 77-yard run out… it happened on our watch and they beat us by 7 points (not that the score really matters in preseason, but ya get the point).
And yes, McCaffrey’s 77-yard run happened against our 1st-team Defense.
I saw the two sacks from Quinn on Newton which displayed his elite ability to rush off the corner. If he can hold up and avoid injuries, that’s what he can do.
I liked what I saw from Quinn, but just like I’m not overly concerned about the defense, I’m not over-hyped by Quinn’s pass rush yet either. He looked fast, and he was having his way with the tackle for sure, but it’s preseason, so . . .
Not the stats but that he looks healthy and fast and he’s a tough SOB to to block. It’s not like he doesn’t have a body of work to go by.
AGREED! What a pleasant surprise that was to many. Rumors of his past back injury derailing his ability seem to be false. I didn’t see him bend like he used to (it was one game with limited snaps for him), be he clearly still has a non-stop motor, agility to turn on a dime, and excellent closing speed.
M13, my old mantra is nobody will care about the preseason once the RS starts. None of the stats matter in these games. The Bills and Colts would lose all their preseason games back in the day and always be playing for championships. They are practice games where 70+ players are getting work. Not saying this means we’ll be playing for championships, just that the results don’t mean anything. We could shut down the run game in the PS, get all excited about it and then allow 150+ in game one of the RS. The PS means nothing other than injuries.

The late 1st half and 2nd half were backups and bubble players for the most part. That’s what I’m saying! Everyone is always about chemistry and continuity yet in the PS you never have that. It’s a PS game of reps decided by who practices well and that’s who plays. Guys who sit on the bench and get minimal reps until the 4th qtr are gone. They’re not showing it in practice.
Okay, I’ve got you now, man! And as we all should know by now, the only somewhat meaningful game is PSG3 (dress rehearsal game). And even then, we’re still not going to be showing our Trump card or genuine intentions.
And as I’ve heard you say for several years now, NOBODY will be referring to ANYTHING that happened in the preseason once the regular season begins… VERY TRUE. The only exception? He’s not used to being a boundary CB and coming in to offer run support from out there. It was his missed assignment that cost us the long run. Did you not wonder where the DB on that side was? Bobby McCain floated passively into the mess and got lost in the wash. Your Corners MUST make some run support tackles or the D does not have enough men to absorb all the blocks.
OK so there was enough blame to share with TJ taking a bad angle and the OLB getting solo blocked, but it’s 11 on 11. If the D sacrifices a CB then it’s 10 on 9., assuming that since you are playing Carolina, somebody is the Spy on Cam Newton reducing it to 10 on 10..

thought that with all between him and handing,
he didn’t even see/realize that the ball was in McCaffreys hands till it was too late…
That’s how I saw it…
Thoughtvwe played really good first half D other than 2 plays,
and moved the ball well offensively minus 3 starters & 2 of top 3 RB’s,
while believing that the penalties led to 9 rather than 21 first half points

The other team also gets paid to make plays, so every once in a while despite our best efforts they will win a battle .. we hust have to win more battles than they do and thus WIN THE WAR

Randy, I think most uptempo schemes are designed to keep the D personnel on the field and to read the defensive positions at the LOS, not necessarily to hurry up the game.
the thing is when we get stuffed or draw a penalty on 1st down it puts us in a hole that we can’t climb out of on a consistent basis. penalties are a lack of execution and the blame for that should go to the HC.
last year we didn’t have a RB that could give us 3 yards on 1st down consistently, if we did we would have a very manageable 2nd and 7 this IMO is the reason we went 6-10.
all i can hope for is Gore will bring us an effective running game because without that we are at best another 6-10 team

Yes trying to keep base defensive Personnel on the field and keeping the other team from switching guys is part of it but you can do that by going slower too and just not switching your personnel out, so that’s not really the main focus.

Also, I think the biggest reason we can’t run is our o-line not doing their job. Second, I would say it’s because we’re way too predictable. Then, teams know how to defend Tannehill by bringing early pressure…using run blitzes and forcing him to go to his short first read. I know you believe it’s more about the running back but I think it’s more about the offensive line.
Baker to start by default.
We have our softest part of the schedule early, so while the rookies and new guys are getting acclimated we need to win games early.

Anytime something like that happens, thats going to be the case but i will say there were some players that stood out as epic failing, McMillan and Baker both count on that play. The safeties didnt do a great job either after he got loose.
Would have been awesome if at another stadium, but absolutely perfect from the one in Detroit.
