Oh here in Miami, fans should definitely be doing the safety dance. This is easily the best collection of safety talent in quite some time. In 2011, we had Yeremiah Bell and Reshad Jones, but Reshad was just getting his career started at that point. This is now the best unit on this team. I know Minkah Fitzpatrick is just a rookie, but I think you can throw out the typical rookie plan, this kid is special, and and he’s not going to be overwhelmed by anything he sees in the NFL. He was used like a pro at Alabama, exposed to just about everything playing multiple positions and assignments at Alabama. Nick Saban said he was his best player, and he could handle anything, and that’s high praise indeed. We know what Reshad is, he’s a playmaker who can make things happen against the run or pass. T.J. McDonald didn’t get a full shot here because he was suspended for 8 games, but this former Rams strong safety can lay the wood, and has had over 100 tackles in a season. The talent drops off after the super trio, but maybe this is the year that either Walt Aikens or Jordan Lucas take a step forward, learning from Jones, McDonald and Minkah. Or, maybe Maurice Smith steals the last spot.
Reshad Jones S – 6’1 215 – 30YO
Reshad has done it all as a Miami Dolphins safety. Drafted in the 5th RD (#163) in the 2010 NFL draft, he’s been one of our best draft picks in that time period, if not the best. Annually racks up 100 or more tackles, and has 18 INT’s and 10.5 sacks so far in his career, along with 5 TD’s, 3 on INT returns and 2 on fumble returns. Playmaker! He can play near the LOS, and also has the speed to make plays on the back end. A leader on this team, and one that should hopefully be a career Dolphin.
_____________________________________________________
T.J. McDonald S – 6’2 225 – 27YO
The former Rams Strong safety is a lot like Reshad in that he can play close to the LOS or make plays deep as well. He’s a very good athlete, but hasn’t been anything like the playmaker Reshad has been. Still, he tackles well, and can cover, and can be used like a safety or a linebacker, so he brings versatility. Both he and Reshad can be part of the new formation that’s sweeping the NFL for the last few years, the Big Nickel. That means sometimes deploying a combination of big defensive backs, usually safeties replacing the smaller nickel corner. I look forward to seeing a lot of T.J., Reshad and Minkah on the field together this season.
______________________________________________________
Minkah Fitzpatrick S – 6’1 202 – 21YO
The great thing about Minkah Fitzpatrick to me is the fact that while playing for Nick Saban, Saban used him in so many different situations, and Minkah succeeded in all of them. He wasn’t just a guy who was versatile enough to play multiple positions, he was excellent enough to do it better than anyone else. That’s the key right there, some guys are versatile, and can do things adequately at a few different things. Not Minkah, he kills it everywhere. We got a taste of what he’s capable of in the very first preseason game. That play where a completion was certain, but Minkah closed with a quick burst and was able to get to the receiver and cause him to drop the football. I saw him making tackles and defending the pass all over the field. good things are coming, no GREAT things are coming for this player.
______________________________________________________
Maurice Smith S – 6’0 194 – 23YO
Right now, Maurice Smith is 4th on the depth chart, ahead of Walt Aikens and Jordan Lucas. The former Alabama, then Georgia safety was picked up by the Dolphins last season as an UDFA. So far in training camp, according to HC Adam Gase said this of Smith . . .“I think his confidence level is extremely high right now,” Gase said. “He understands the defense. It’s allowing him to play faster.” Whether he can continue to impress remains to be seen. Smith played in 6 games last season for the Dolphins.
______________________________________________________
Jordan Lucas S – 6’0 190 – 25YO
Lucas was a 2016 6th RD pick (204th). He appeared in 8 games in ’16, and 11 games in ’17 playing mostly special teams. The former Nittany Lion safety is now 5th on the depth chart, and that’s not a great place to be, especially if we only carry 4 safeties. Last year for the most season we carried 4 safeties, but in December we carried 5. If Smith stays ahead of Lucas, Lucas could definitely be on the roster bubble.
______________________________________________________
Walt Aikens S – 6’1 208 – 27YO
Aikens is really a player w/o a true position. The Dolphins have been shuffling him around from S to CB since they drafted him back in the 4th RD (#125) in the 2014 NFL Draft. in 2015, Aikens started 5 games, but otherwise has mostly been a ST’s player, but has played in almost every game since ’14. He’s show he’s durable, and is a good special teams player, but it seems like at this juncture, he’s no more than that.
______________________________________________________
So that’s our safety situation. Depending upon how many CB’s and how many WR’s we keep will probably impact how many safeties we choose to keep, and keep in mind that if Aikens is stowed on the CB depth chart, he’s a guy who can also play safety. It’s the top 3 though, that should give Miami Dolphins fans something to really look forward to. Reshad and T.J. are a great tandem as is, so just think how much Minkah elevates the defense? I know I do all the time!

Great write Mike E !! We look great at safety and I do believe that Minka will be a very explosive player for many years. Great Group !!
Thanks Doggy!
Shoot man, 2 months we’ll be in FLA bro!
Everybody look at your hands
CLAP-CLAP
Nice
I think this safety group is tailor made for today’s NFL. I like our ability to match up play to play, and game to game. I think with this group, “you can leave your cares behind”
Agreed

Gooten Stuff’n Mike !!!
I like Lucas but saw him getting burned on responsibilities many times vs Bucs in 3rd/4th quarters vs 3rd/4th stringers..
Smith was making some plays when he was in (earlier in game vs higher competition…
Just preseason game one, but liking Lucas less than I did before Bucs game..
And on that play by Fitz, he didn’t just hit the guy to make him drop the ball,
he actually punched the ball out as he hit the receiver, EXCELLENT PLAY ALL THE EAY AROUND, he didn’t half-ass it with just a big hit, he multi-tasked that play/FINISHED!!! GTEATSTUFFF!!! HE IS INDEED SPECIAL!!!
GOFINS!!!
Thanks KV! Smith might definitely end up getting that spot, we have 3 more games for someone to make their case.
From what I saw of Lucas who I like,
Even Aikens might be ahead of him
Though I didn’t notice Aikens
Which could be construed as good or bad…
If he was on field and didn’t have an obvious F Up,
it’s good for him, otherwise not so much…
He’s at least a ST’s Ace !!!
GOFINS!!!

LOL – This is like the injury list now, but you should change the possible to doubtful, since there is no longer a questionable designation, but keep the probable. 🙂

Awesome Naples. Look forward to meeting you. Hope you and your lovely can make some of the stuff before game day. With the dog strumming these days have a whole 3-day thing going on.

Not good . . .
Nice write-up Mike E
Thanks Wyo
Nice job Mike. I think the back end of this defense is elevated quite a bit with Jones, TJ, AND now Minkah.
Thanks for getting the Safety Dance song stuck in my head!
Thanks Bookman – You’re welcome!

Can Antonio Callaway become the next “””Larry Fitzgerald???
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000947907/article/hard-knocks-episode-2-browns-receiver-walls-are-talking
KV – The biggest difference between Minkah, and guys like Walt Aikens, Jordan Lucas and heck, even Jason Allen (former Dolphin) is that Minkah CAN play any of the DB positions, and play them well. You can put him anywhere and do so with confidence. With the other guys, they were trying so hard to find a spot where they would shine, but it just kinda never happened. Allen had some success, but they never really found a spot where he was truly comfortable.
Yep Mike!!!
My projected Starting Roster Piece illustrated/suggested that
Fitz can Start at any one of EIGHT DIFFERENT POSITIONS defensively,
(If need be)!!!
He truly is softballs 10th man ROVER,
HE’LL PRODUCTIVELY FILL WHATEVER GAP THAT EXIST ON ANY/EVERY GIVEN PLAY!!!
GO 29,
GOFINS!!!
I think a lot has changed at safety the past 48 hours, with Minkah playing the slot. It sure would be nice, if one of our other CBs could step up and take the job opposite Howard.
Then again, just get the best back 7 on the field and the rest will take care of itself.
Still thinkin that on play one, game one
Fitz should start opposite of X for shutdown CB tandem!!!
In my eyes Fitz is every bit the CB that he is at S !!!
Give Tank/Lippett/others vying for that spot some incentive!!!
Though (for the most part), I see Fitz ROVING around the middle of the field somewhere, so that he’s not wasted on a single receiver throughout game entireties!!!
GOFINS!!!
not wasted on single area throughout games..
Just so y’all know, ‘rover’ is football terminology designated to a DF7 player… not to a secondary player like Minkah. I think the term ‘flex’ is more applicable to Minkah.
Just sayin’! 🙂 😉
When suggesting 10th man softball ROVER,
along with all else suggested,
I’m basically suggesting that
Fitz is like an NFL’s team 12th man,
he’s practically an extra player to 8 different positions
On & Off the field !!!
Flex isn’t as good an analogy to my suggestions of him being a ROVER!!!
It’s ALL GOOD THOUGH!!!
GOFINS!!!
“Very impressed. Very football-oriented. There is nothing else … These guys grind, they spend extra time, they study, they know what to do. They’re playing fast. You see the impact. It’s noticeable that these guys are going to help us this year. This isn’t going to be, ‘Hey, let’s see what happens over the next three years.’ We’re seeing four or five, six guys actually … We know these guys are going to help us.”
— Gase on the 2018 rookie class.
It’s like dominoes man, you bring in a guy with a great work ethic like Minkah in the first round, and every other rookie sees this kid busting his ass, and he’s a 1st RD pick, and it’s just contagious. That’s why this draft can ending up being one of our vest draft classes ever. All these guys are playing to a high standard, and Minkah is setting the pace.
Think Gase is bringing in guys who are like him… the guy who his high school coach said to the guy who was visiting to see his star RB, “Adam will never play for you, but you really gotta talk to him.” And Gase ending up on the coaching staff his freshman year. Think he was sold on Minkah with the report of him studying tape two hours before anyone else on the team was there.
This is a nice group of safeties for sure, but all of them together couldn’t equal the crust Jake Scott rubs out of his eyes in the morning. lol.
I was waiting for something along these lines from you, surprised it took this long. lol
I was too busy singing the safety dance!
And we are one of just 4 teams in the red by $Ms.
It’s manageable, but just sayin’…
Suh’s $13M cap hit is a killer
We’ll restructure Tanny, that will open up some space.
None of our contracts are extraordinary, but that $13M hit from Suh is the big difference.
Quite correct… we’re still paying the price for Tannenbaum’s recklessness.
I hope everyone realizes that if Tannehill hadn’t restructured his contract to the tune of a mere $790K base salary, we’d be FUNKED this year.
I still don’t know why Tannenbaum is still with us.
And YES… by Tannehill restructuring, it only kicked the can down the road for future years.
Gonna be a lot of moving around this in the back 7 and Minkah may be everywhere, but starting to think most times they will be setting him up as our very own version of Ed Reed. And much as like our our other two safeties, their strengths lay closer to the LOS…. particularly TJ, who is fast as heck to react but more a zone beast hitter.
Hotel Sheldon booked for the Fest!
Bazinga?
Good one!
No turning back now… you jumped down the rabbit hole. 🙂
Nice Bookman, we’re right next door!
What are all the hotels everyone is at?
That’s beyond football and just stupid.
ER – Hollywood Beach
The Sheldon is right next door to the Margaritaville, and then a bit further down, maybe a 1/2 mile or so is the Neptune, where are a large part of the group are staying, but all of them are on Hollywood beach, and and are easily within walking distance of each other, even drunk and walking with a cooler of beer. lol
ER,
I used Booking.com and plugged in Hollywood beach. I looked for Hotels on the map that were near where Mike and the other were staying. Piggy stayed at the Sheldon last time.
Good writeup, Mike. We know three of these guys will be in the rotation at safety. Aikens likely makes it due to his STs prowess and he can sub at both S and CB. I guess it depends on how many DBs we keep.
Thanks Tim – Yeah, those guys who can play at both spots (CB/S) have an advantage, and since Aikens is a good special teamer, he has a leg up there too.
Thanks guys
Going to try and ramp up whether I can make it or not.
Hope you can, it is a lot of fun

I don’t want Minkah at CB. I prefer him at FS. We haven’t had a guy in the deep back end who can become that kind of field general for a long, long time, and I think he can do that. Move him around situationally but let him develop into an all-pro FS. That would be huge for this defense.
I think that’s how it will be eventually. Right now get the best DBs you have on the field.
Naples and his wife confirmed for the Fest! Not counting +1’s, makes him Phelon and Twice the first timers.
Hooray
Phelon won’t be new to me since I met him a few weeks ago but it will be his first Fest. He’s a great guy
Can’t wait to meet you Naples and Twice
Hope you can make it ER
For anyone booking Sun Beach Inn is right next to Neptunes on Hollywood beach
Very interesting read if you got the time!
I gave up, way too long. Sad story from what I read though.
I didn’t see the OL as an issue either. Wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t bad. Keep working!
Great news Naples! Looking forward to meeting you! Phelon, you too man, it will be nice to finally meet you as well. ER – Get on it man, please try to make it, I promise it won’t disappoint! Bring SUSHI!! 🙂
He’ll need special coolers for the sushi. LOL
Yeah, I suppose that would be a difficult item to transport
Why wouldn’t Langford travel with the team if they left for NC today to get away and get ready for the Friday night game. Wouldn’t you want him with the team being he just got here?
OMG, so risky! He might miss a tackle or an assignment, and the Panthers might score a TD!
Odd comment. Could Omar be worried about Kendall’s health in the heat?
Has Stills’ leg fallen off yet?
I believe he has an ankle injury he’ll never be the same. Or maybe wink wink… we know what he is.
I’m working on it eveyone.
I can guarantee no sushi tho!
Just put it in our carry-on, that won’t stink or anything. LOL
If I freeze it I have 4 hours after it thaws…..i might make it. LOL
“”””As far as him OR Gore starting and what that means, Drake just smiles: “Frank’s a great player. You learn things just watching him. It really doesn’t matter who starts. What matters is going in there and making plays.”
That’s the mindset both Gore and Drake have. Make plays. Gain yards. Feed off of one another. Give the Dolphins the type of balance that is imperative if Tannehill is to remain in an upright position.
Gore and Drake. Or is it Drake and Gore? Doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that this interesting pairing of the past and future has a real chance of working quite well in the present.””””

I agree with that totally:
Between Tankersley and Lippett, we’ve got good stuff at CB. We need them to lock down the quicks and pick off anything thrown short. Let Minkah be Ed Reed vacuuming everything deep.
That statement should go without saying, of course the team is better with Minkah at FS, but you have to get your best back 7 on the field.
What good does it do to have 1 CB locking his side down and the back end secure only to have every pass thrown to the other CBs man, completed at a 70% rate?
Think we are gonna see a lot of possible set-ups. And a lot of times teh choice might end up being Tank/Lippet versus McCain or TJ or a 3rd LB. Yeah…. am thinking Howard, Jones and Minkah are gonna get a whole lot of playing time.
I dont see Howard Jones and Minkah ever going off the field.
On Stills’s 2nd catch of the TB game, you can see the tackler land on the back of the heel of the foot Stills was pushing off from with only the ball of his foot down. Kinda twisted and crushed it at the same time.
Almost a dirty play looked like to me. Tackler held onto the foot while standing up.
Stills got up gingerly and walked right off the field and did not return that i recall.
There’s way too much dirty play in the game, but the more you try to fix it the more corrupt the league gets, because it gives the officials more judgement, which leads to teams like the cheats getting more calls.
Did I ever mention how much I hate the horse collar rule? They recently added judgement to that retarded TO rule.

I agree
OH I hope your both wrong!
They should get lots of rest after the 3 and outs! 😉
🙂
There’s always at least 1 literal joker.
What I’m interested in seeing as how we use these DB hybrid guys in our pressure packages. We could see some interesting blitzes. We also have a LB in Baker who could drop back in coverage while a DB blitzes.
Any one of our 3 safeties are big enough, fast enough and strong enough to be a good blitzer. That’s a good thing.
MikeE,
With options, it allows you to keep the opposing offense guessing….harder for a QB to get a good presnap read and know who’s coming from where.
Yes, absolutely.

Yeah, but Doleman has 150 sacks, and Wake doesn’t yet have 100. It’s a shame he started so late, but hopefully he can play at least another season after this.
That’s why he showed it in a per game average!
He won’t match the totals!

Wyo – I get what Matty I was doing, but what’s the point? There are some great players that had great short careers, but they won’t be in the HOF. We know wake has played very well consistently throughout his career, but HOF may be tough.
Doleman, even in his last 9 seasons, had 99 sacks. He wasn’t just a compiler.
Er, make that 96.
Oh I think Wake has a good shot at the Hall!
There are others there that didn’t have the numbers he should have?
It’s still up in the air for now!
When did we draft Howard Jones ? 🙂
I almost did that too. lol
LOL
LOL, I was just catching up , starting back a bit and reading forward….”I was thinking someone has to catch that and will comment”
McMillan isn’t a true rookie but kind of.
Might as well be!
That was mentioned in the article.
I didn’t read the article, just the initial post. LOL
Perkins says, Baker isn’t in the nickel package, that’s surprising.
I bet it changes.
Maybe he’s still learning all the coverages and they don’t want to put too much on his plate just yet.
Playing coverage is what he does, you don’t start him out playing the base package and take him out in the nickel, that’s retarded.
He still has to learn the entire defensive playbook and that starts with the base. He played a lot in the first PS game and I’m sure he was out their in nickel too. He just might not be with the first team nickel at this time.
LOL @ Coach Steve 🙂
Sometimes logic has to take presidence over the illogical.
Not that anyone was looking forward to it, but I won’t be able to make the MetLife takeover this year.
Lost your mittens?
Sb — that’s too bad. Only been to one but was a great time. Fest is 10/21 though.
Couples date with Damian (faux UKFin) last night. He’s fired up for the Fest and coming with his friend from last year (forget his name but good dude). Last year he picked up the extra Orange pass that OD got after his fight with Ross’ folks as a gift. He insisted I buy him one when pick the ones for the tailgate. WYOMING; Thanks for posting that very interesting and informative story about Su’a Cravens and his attempted comeback from a severe concussion. This story is full of the changes the NFL has made from several years regarding the treatment of these concussions. And it also details the CBA rights and obligations, –how they work and, sometimes, how they DON’T WORK!! I urge everyone on the board to read this story very carefully.
Perhaps the most revealing part of this tale is the fact that certain teams are worse than others when it comes to this issue (no surprise there). Thankfully, we were spared from Jerry Jones’s idiot remarks about “there’s no link between playing football and CTE.” Jones supposedly has been BANNED by the commisioner’s office from commenting on this issue. Which leaves him more time to ponder the concept of a flat earth.
PS: This story is located at 6:18 PM last evening on this page.
“Which leaves him more time to ponder the concept of a flat earth.”
LOL
Your welcome OD!
I found it very informative!
Steve – Yeah, it’s a shame, but Ballage probably won’t play due to the concussion
Wasn’t he from last year? Sony Michel was their top pick in 2018.
He’s hurt too.
Both Brady and Gronkowski have back spasms.
and Edelman is suspended.
The new Monday Night Football play by play announcer sounds like Joe Buck which is unfortunate.
Witten sounds a little like Romo. He’s pretty good.
Booger is pretty good.
All is right again with Monday night having 3 announcers again.
Correction.
Brady is 16/23 for 122 and a TD.
(The good part is that that is only 7.6 yds per completion.
Foles surrendered a 54 yd fumble return TD.
NE also had a 58 yd punt return.
If the Mets can score 24 runs in a game, The Dolphins should be able to score 25 points per game. Just sayin . . .
Didn’t the Mets total just 24 over their first 120 games
I kid,
Go O’s !!!
Yes, I believe you;re right, which makes it even more crazy that they scored 24 in one game
Foles got hurt
Foles was 3/9 for 44.
Sudfeld is 18/32 for 300 and 3 TDs and 1 INT.

OG wannabe is OK indeed !!!
Anyone see the absolute perfect form/technique tackle called a penalty on Pats???
OMG, how the FUCK does one play football if that tackle is illegal????
Hit the guy in the chest with his earhole and shoulder!!!
No other way in the world to make that tackle vs downhill runner without being run over like squirrel vs car, absolute perfect tackling form!!!
PENALTY, REDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually they had a second ridiculous call against them with the RB trying to get lower than the tackler along the sidelines…
Mannn, I hope they don’t enforce all this BULLLL SHITTTT,
and I hate the Pats, but I’d hate these calls against them even if it were the SB/especially, rather than a PS game…
F _ _ _, just go back to leather helmets, and let ‘Em play football!!!
Schiish, (last I looked),
Brady had some 27 attempts in PS game 2, #one for him…
Kinda Nutty!!!
Next week Yea, but first PS game after back issue???
Maybe week two is becoming almost as much a dress rehearsal as week 3 has always been?? With the cut dates being eliminated to just one BIG CUT ??

If #12 could use 27plus attempts, then 17 surely can!!!!

Great article about Fitzpatrick on ESPN this morning for those who haven’t seen it yet.
http://www.espn.com/blog/miami-dolphins/post/_/id/27462/dolphins-minkah-fitzpatrick-has-star-power-as-hybrid-db
I saw it. When a D is great they usually have someone on the back end making big plays, TOs… think Ed Reed, Polumalu, Legion of Boom.
Teaming him up with Jones and Howard (did you see how I changed up the order of the names) gives us a chance to have a great D.
Real nice article. ESPN gave us an upgrade in Cameron Wolfe versus James Walker.
Give it time Grasshopper
Cheats dont usually play back to back preseason games balls to the wall. Maybe Brady playing all first half has to do with the Eagles 2nd teamers being in, less chance for injury, you know at his age, then next week maybe he only plays the 1st quarter.
KV, the officials always seem to call things stricter in the preseason for new rules, especially against the team that is winning, just so the players get it into their heads how it could be called in the regular season, then once the season starts they back off.
Tonight is a big game for our D, after giving up a high % of completed passes last week, and making the McCain/Minkah changes.
M13, Like me, I know you HATE seeing Patterson as a Patsie and teaming up with Brady.
My first hope for tonight like every PS game except maybe, just maybe the 3rd is no serious injuries.
Not touching this with a 10 foot pole.
First triple play in MLB when the batter did not get retired in 106 years.
I’m just going to leave this here!
Instigator!! LOL
What, Who????
I didn’t miss any blocks!
Maybe they should have just run up the middle instead. The first play of that drive was an 8 yard run up the middle by Ajayi….LOL
Steve – You didn’t have to change up the order, they have these things called commas that do wonderful things. 😛
Why didn’t I think if that🤔

“Really it’s about getting our best 11 on the field. If that’s what it is, that’s what it is. We’re just going to keep competing. I think that’s something that Bobby, he’s the one guy that’s able to do that. He can give those receivers fits because he’s aggressive at the line of scrimmage. He can run with them, and he can get his hands on the ball. He’s very aware of concepts, which gives him an advantage over a lot of corners.”
— Gase on why McCain is starting on the boundary tonight.
The same as we’ve heard since Minkah was drafted, let’s hope they actually stick to that.
Go BMc Gooaaahhh, GOFINS!!!
Some clown from SB Nation is advocating for the Fins to use a scheme of running game and play action passes. We all know Ryan is much better when using play action passes, but the coaches are part of we and know it too.
You have to be really effective running the ball to be able to use play action more than we do.
Steve @ 9:42
Yea Bro, always refs are trigger happy in PS,
But those particular two penalties weren’t penalties in any realm of game at any level !!! ATROCIOUS YELLOWS, that eliminated a great tackle, and on another that eliminated a great run & finish!!!
Rookie Ref I hope just wanting to get on TV??
Its preseason for the refs too, if they’d just officiate the game the way a soccer game is supposed to be officiated things would be much better.
In soccer you’re only supposed to call the fouls that are clear, no murky unsure stuff.
Soccer should be called Flopper
