Dress Rehearsal – Preseason Game III

Now that we’ve got all the roster battles out of the way, this Saturday looms large for some players who either can lose their starting jobs because they don’t show enough to keep them, or for players trying to establish themselves as starters to prove they are worthy of such.  The third game of the preseason is the game in which starters get their longest look, some may play at a minimum the first half, and some even continue into the 3rd quarter.  It’s the closest thing to REAL game the preseason gives you.  That doesn’t mean there will be extensive game planning for the game, that’s not the case, but starters will get plenty of reps to get them ready for the regular season.

There’s so much talk, particularly on this blog as to who the starting RB should be.  Some feel it should be long time veteran Frank Gore, and some feel it should be young upstart Kenyan Drake.  As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t really matter.  If it makes some people happy that Gore is on the field for the first snaps of our 1st offensive series, so be it.  Kenyan Drake is the back that will be receiving the majority of the touches.  How much of a majority will depend on the game circumstances.  Drake is the explosive big play home run hitter, and he has the potential to do that on any play.  He showed that last season, and he will improve.  As I’ve pointed out several times, Drake was always the 2nd fiddle to backs like Derrick Henry, and T.J Yeldon.  It was partly due to minor injuries that hampered Drake, but also because the other backs were getting it done while Drake was not.  Drake is ready folks, and we will use him in a fashion that best suits the team.  He’s an excellent pass catcher, and explosive runner.  Gore is also an excellent pass catcher, although he doesn’t have the breakaway speed he once had, if there’s a short yardage situation where we need a yard or two, Gore would be my choice for sure.

Ryan Tannehill needs to get this team in the endzone. That delay of game in preseason game II in the redzone is just a drive killer, and unacceptable.  Honestly, I saw another series where he had a delay of game, at least according to the play clock they showed on the field, he got an extra 2 seconds somehow, but it wasn’t called anyway (maybe the play clock we saw was incorrect). The Ravens always give us fits, so I’m not expecting too many good things, but a couple of TD’s from the first stringers on offense would be nice.  I would also like #86, TE Mike Gesicki to show a pulse in the passing game, and go out there and catch some passes, maybe even a TD.

The defense allowed some big plays last week, so I’d like them to not allow that to occur.  I don’t follow any other teams closely, but it seems like a lot of ex-Dolphins are real chippy now that they are elsewhere.  Is it just the Dolphins that have ex players so disgruntled and petty?  Suh took a shot at the DL after Christian McCaffrey busted through for a 71YD TD run, in which Suh put on Instagram “Right up the gut”.  You would think these guys have enough to worry about with  the respective teams they currently play for, but . . .

I would say one of the biggest issues on the defensive side of the ball is is a math equation, X + ? = CB.   We know Xavien Howard is starting on the right side, but which CB starts opposite him is the key.  Right now, former slot and nickel CB Bobby McCain is tops on the depth chart, and he played eh against the Panthers.  Cordrea Tankersley took a step backwards, and Tony Lippett is M.I.A. with an ankle injury.  So that leaves Torry McTyer, Jalen Davis, Cornell Armstrong and Taveze Calhoun, as well as Tony Lippett if healthy, as the CB’s who have a shot, along with do everything Minkah Fitzpatrick, who may be pressed into action early on.  My hope has always been that either Tank elevates his play or Lippett gets healthy, and goes back to his 2016 form and forms a solid CB tandem.  At the moment, both seem in jeopardy.

Will Devante Parker ever be and remain fully healthy, and will he ever be the top talent receiver we thought we drafted at #14 in 2015?  Probably not, it hasn’t come together yet, and Parker was exercised the 5th year option in April of this year, so odds are, if Parker is going to have a great season, he will do it in ’19 just to torture Dolphins fans as he most likely walks when we don’t pay him $16M per after he catches 80 passes for 1400 yards and 10 TD’s. Besides Parker, we have Kenny Stills who is been a big play WR for us.  Stills averaged over 15 YPR every season except last season with Jay Cutler, where averaged just under 15, at 14.6YPR.  Danny Amendola will be taking over for Jarvis Landry as far as working the middle and short areas, and I believe Albert Wilson will be doing some of that as well.  Wilson may line up more on the outside, but he’s the type of receiver you get the ball with a little bit of separation to, he can turn that into a big play.  Jakeem Grant is another such receiver.  They want to get the ball into his hands, because Grant is a HR waiting to happen.  Wilson will probably get the occasional rushing play too, and Grant will as well.  As to which WR, if any, gets the 6th WR spot, my hopes are Frances Owusu makes his case.  Ford may have a slight edge, and of course due to investment, you can’t totally count Carroo out, but I think Carroo better show an awful lot if he wants to stay.

The TE situation is kind of muddy at the moment.  MarQueis Gray is now atop the depth chart, followed by A.J. Derby and then Gavin Escobar.  1st RD pick Mike Gesicki is now 5th, one spot behind Thomas Duarte, and just in front of Durham Smythe.  Message?  I think so.  If Gesicki goes up against the #3’s, he will probably do some damage there, but preseason depth charts are jumbled anyway, even for the dress rehearsal.  One thing is certain, MarQueis Gray is a good blocker, and I expect he will help get the run game going against an always tough Baltimore defense.  It seems like Gase wants guys with experience against the Ravens, and I can understand that.  John Harbaugh is a top NFL coach, and his teams are always disciplined and tough.

The Ravens have somewhat of a new look offense, with new WR’s Michael Crabtree from the Raiders, Willie Snead from the Saints, and John Brown, the speedster from Arizona, along with a refreshed rushing attack led by Alex Collins who had a very nice season last year with 973 yards rushing, and 6 TD’s, his first year as a starter.

The DL didn’t look bad, and Robert Quinn looked downright fast as he had his way with LT Matt Kalil.  The 71 YD run is not all on the DL, they are the 1st line of defense, and then the LB’s, CB’s and safeties.  All have to break down in order for that run to happen, and it did.  I still think our DL is way underrated, and I expect us to be pleasantly surprised.    The addition of Kendall Langford will only help, a nice mix of vets (Phillips, Spence and Langford) and youngins (Godchaux, Taylor and either Pittman or Moten)

All of a sudden, the fanbase turned on McMillan, who looked so slow, and out of position all night.  Relax!  I think McMillan will be a very good player for us this season, let him get some action, he knows what he’s doing, he needs to get up to NFL game speed.  Kiko is fine, definitely a solid player, as long as he’s not covering a mismatch TE or RB, and Baker looks poised to make some noise.

Things we all want to see, are red zone TD’s, no FIST PUMPS!  We want to see some player, whoever that may be, solidify the CB spot opposite Xavien Howard, no big plays or really long drives for the Ravens, and if the Dolphins are going to score TD’s, please do it while Ryan Tannehill is in so we can stop talking about that.  Most of all, we want all our Dolphins to get healthy, and stay that way!

1 quarter in the books this evening… and even though it’s preseason (dress-rehearsal PSG3), yet against the Super Bowl Champion Philly Eagles… I think this Cleveland Browns team is going to be GOOD this year.

Don’t know if they can go from worst to first as we had from ’07-’08, but these guys are YOUNG, HUNGRY, and RIDDLED with talent… BOTH sides of the ball!

Our backup QB situation isn’t really a mess. A mess would mean it cant be fixed with the current players. I want to see Petty play in the 3rd, right after Ryan goes out. He’s showed in the past he’s better than the other 2 and has scored tds on his only 2 drives, even if against scrubs, but I don’t see the other 2 doing better against better scrubs.

Make it Petty’s job to lose, but if he doesn’t succeed give it to Fales, you can manage a game around him. Osweiler is too erratic to work with.

Anyone that missed game 2 can find it on YouTube. I watched up to the 9-6 score, my take is running the ball was a detriment to our O, had we passed on every down the outcome would’ve been more favorable. The quick passing game looked great, pitch and catch.

The problem I see on D is guys selling out, while taking the wrong gap (LBs). Couldn’t believe the ease McCain gave up a 3rd and 11 completion, but I doubt we’ll see him playing man in that situation.

Everything as a whole looked pretty good up to the 9-6 score. I have seen the TD that McMillan messed up on to the TE, I think he’s too deep, if he was 5 yards up he would’ve been right in his grill.

A game against a non-divisional opponent comes to mind. They played a deep zone and Ryan had a field day underneath.

    Hey Mike,

    Is that a debate? Powerback?

I don’t know if I’d call Drake a power back, but do believe he’s powerful. I think he’s a 3 down back fwiw, but if I needed a TD on 4th and Goal I might hope to have a different guy to hand it off too, not that he couldn’t get it for ya, just that I think that’s a specialized role and he wouldn’t be the guy I cast in it.

I like Drake a lot, and believe he can be far better then serviceable as a 3 down back, which, is honestly a rarer and rarer thing in today’s game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, it’s an ongoing saga here on the FU blog. ORob wants his “power back” like he believes Ajayi was, a guy the defenses have to account for every week. He thinks Drake doesn’t keep defenses honest. I happen to agree with you that in short yardage plays, there are better options than Drake, namely Gore, or maybe even Ballage, but too early to tell with Ballage.

  25. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

A powerful RB that can gain the tough yards up the middle defenses have to game plan for and speed at the WR positions creates great down and distance…unpredictability and is a recipe for success in the NFL.

I think Gore may fill the RB role.

  26. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Being able to impose your will at the Off LOS has a trickle down effect on the whole team…all 3 phases, it gives the D rest and is great for the moral of the whole team.

It’s a way to help while growing intellectually that I had been searching for. I know I have so much to learn, but that’s what I’m most looking forward to.”

Thomas is hoping that by making an impact, he can cement his legacy beyond football. “I believe helping others is what I’m supposed to be doing at this point in my life. Hopefully I can help by encouraging more of my peers to connect with who they are outside of the game. If ultimately that’s what I’m remembered for, I’d be very thankful.”

Ryan Tannehill was top 12 in the following QB objective measures in 2016:
    Completion Percentage (6th)
    Yards per Attempted Pass (7th)
    Late Game Comebacks (7th)
    Game Winning Drives (9th)
    Net Yards per game (12th)
    Quarterback Rating (12th)
    Touchdown Percentage (11th)

He was also the fifth best passer versus the blitz (ProFootballFocus), had the second highest Big Time Throw percentage (PFF), and was top 3 in both Deep Ball Accuracy and Red Zone QB Rating (there goes about half of those narratives from the Tannehill detractors).

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase said he’s good with the short passes, we’ll take what they’re giving us. After watching game 2 I agree with that. It would be different, if we were forcing it short, and you have to be able to throw deep or the short passing game doesn’t work.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ravens will be a good test for exactly that. The only way to beat a team like them, which we always seem to have problems doing, (see Buffalo) is by making their rush D irrelevant. If it comes down to trying to ground and pound the Ravens, most teams will lose.

Quick release throws to RBs are needed to slow down Suggs or he will eat us up.
And Weddle (and Reed before him) vacuum desperation passes. He had 6 picks last year.

Tannehill had a disastrous game against them in 2016, so let’s see if he can get through tonight with no turnovers and a couple scoring drives. If so, I’ll feel great.

  56. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Miami had 4 rushing TDs last year. New Orleans had 23.

  57. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

All of the playoff teams last year were well up in the top half of the league in rushing yardage, most in the top 10, except Pitt @20, and come on, they have LeVeon so that is just an anomaly of some sort.

  58. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

360 for 1388 = 22.5 carries per game and 86.75 yds per game

That’s atrocious. We only got the 29th most yards in;the league.

New F’n England was 10th best.

  59. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Target rushing totals to get us to 10th best in the league and a playoff spot would be 1850:
    Drake 900
    Gore 500
    Ballage 250
    Tannehill and everybody else 200

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

per game carries needed to achieve the above @ 4 yds per carry
    Drake 14
    Gore 8
    Ballage 4
    Tannehill and everybody else 3

which is a half a dozen more rushing plays than last year.

We can do this and not wear out Drake. (Of course he will be catching some passes also.)

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Bottom Line is we need to run the ball 30 times per game.
The average # of offensive plays per game in the NFL is 65
so that would still be more passing than running, which is good IMHO.
46% running to 54% passing which seems like Gase’s favorite split as well.

That’ll work, as long as we average 4 yds per carry.

  62. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Orob, how’d your golf go yesterday? I played Tuesday and was driving the shit out of the ball, hitting fairways (about 75%). Several par 4’s, tricky ones about 325 to 350 yards, I was hitting driver/sand wedge and ended up shooting an f-ing 89 (could not hit a green or make a putt, missed 3 birds inside 8ft). Last time I played before that I could not hit a fairway to save my life and shot an 82 (was knocking in putts from everywhere). What a great game! LOL

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As far as passing is concerned, if Ryan completes 67% (which he achieved in 2016) of those 35 passes, then that would be about 23 completions per game. If we can average the golden target of 10 yds per completion, then that would be 230 yds per game. (Last year we completed 62 %without Tannehill. which is Ryan’s career average including rookie year etc.)

We’d need 240 yds per game to get to the Top 10 in the NFL.

277 led the league last year (Chargers) (pasties* 2nd)

The Chargers did complete 23 passes per game but they averaged 12.1 yds per completion.
The Cheats averaged way better percentage @ 66.3 and 11.5 yds per catch.

So much for dink and dunk Brady theories.

But then, Hogan was always open, and Parker was … not.

Last year we were 15th in passing TDs w/ 24 and last tied with Seattle in rushing TDs w/ 4.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Rams averaged the most, 29.9 ppg to our 17.6 (28th in the league)
The Eagles and patsy-boys got 28.6 and the Saints 28.

I think several of you on here said we must score about 24 ppg to have a good season.
You were perfectly correct as Minn was 10th best at 23.9 last yr.

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So how does a team score 24 ppg?
That’s 3 TDs and a FG per game.
    or
    2 TDs and 3 FGs.

So we need 4 or 5 scoring drives per game, which means at least one each qtr.

Jeez that does not seem like too much to ask.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

As long as we get in the endzone, I don’t care if it’s through short passing, 20 runs, or any combination of the 2. Just score TD’s!

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

On defense we had a weird discrepancy in that we were an OK 16th in yardage given up,
but 29th worst in ppg given up.

I guess pick 6es and giving up way more TDs than FGs are what caused that?
plus we let teams have a short field a lot, so they did not need to go so far to score.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Naples your theory on the rushing stats doesn’t work that way. Teams that are leading run more, because they can in the 4th quarter. They dont have to worry about the clock. Running is a what teams that have a lead do, it doesn’t relate to scoring.

YPC is more indicative of a good running team. Sure teams that can run it well keep the D off balance and tend to score more often in the redzone, but you cant just say, All of the playoff teams last year were well up in the top half of the league in rushing yardage, most in the top 10, except Pitt @20, and think all we have to do is be top 16 in rushing and we’re in the playoffs.

There’s many factors that get teams into the playoffs or every team would just turn the clock back to 1970 and run the ball more often.

With that said I’d like to see us run more often and more effective, but if it’s not there in certain games, just do what you have to, to win.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Steve.
Who are you to tell me i am wrong?
Do you think I am wrong to say we got only 4 rushing TDs and that is a bad thing?

You say good teams hold their lead by running in the 4th. Maybe we lost leads by not being able to run in the 4th or gave teams chances to score at the end of the first half because we could not hold onto possession.

Maybe if we had been able to get more than 1.8 or whatever on 1st down early, then we wouldn’t have been behind anyway.

Maybe if we had been able to run the ball into the end zone more efficiently, then we would’ve averaged more than a mere 17 ppg, which would’ve won us enough games to get in the playoffs.

We passed for enough yds to get into the playoffs, so it was not that. We did not give up too many yards, so it was not that.

It is a fact that all the playoff teams were in the top of the league in rushing yardage.
      Except Pitt.

      That is a fact.

I never said it was “all we have to do.”
But it would not hurt to run the ball a lot more successfully.

And actually after you presented my facts to yourself, you ended up with the same conclusion that i did.
      You said
“With that said I’d like to see us run more often and more effective,”

which is exactly what I said, that you originally said was wrong.

LOL
    __________________________________________________________

Glad to hear you’re playing well, i played all right, really went to try a new club i bought, a Ping G-400, I have a Ping G-30, The G-30 is the best driver i have ever owned, it’s getting up there in age and i’ve been testing different clubs to see if i could replace it. The G-400 and the G-30 have the same shaft, a tour 65 ping shaft…(Great Shaft)

Well the G-400 certainly can not replace my G-30, I was about 10 yards shorter with the new G-400, I had also bought an M-3 with a project x shaft with 3.1 torque and it couldn’t replace my G-30.

I buy these clubs on Ebay test them and relist them if i don’t like them, i usually break even.

My next venture may be the Callaway Rouge with Jail break tech. if that doesn’t replace the G-30 i give up.

The Ping G-30 with the Ping tour 65 shaft is a bad ass driver for sure!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

after posting this i figured out why the new ping was lagging, went out to the shed and got my swing weight beam and the swing weight was off, the old ping was at a D-6.5
the new was D-4, there’s an 11 gram weigh screwed into the bottom of the club and my G-30 has a 13 gram weight in it…

just ordered a 13 and a 16 gram weight for the new ping, both were apprx $20 shipping included.

Chase Daniel, who I have wanted for a long to be our backup QB, looked really good today starting against KC #1 Defense. 15-18 for 198, 2 TD’s/0 INT, 6 – 47 rushing and a 149.5 rating. Bears HC decided to rest Trubisky(sp) this game and let Daniel start.

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We can all agree we need a better running game and more balanced offense. We have a strong RB tandem in Drake and Gore, and if they are healthy, both will get a lot of snaps. If our oline play is better this year, both these guys can make good things happen within their respective roles. I think it’s likely Gore may get more snaps in grind it out games, and Drake may get more in higher scoring games. And we have Ballage who hopefully can make the most of his opportunities.

It’s nice we have options at the position. No matter how it shakes out, hopefully we have an effective running game!

    Go Dolphins!!

Cant argue that. My biggest problem with Damien was he couldn’t run the ball, so once the #1 back was nicked up we had issues running the ball. I loved the blocking and receiving he gave us, Landry Jr.
