Dress Rehearsal – Preseason Game III

Now that we’ve got all the roster battles out of the way, this Saturday looms large for some players who either can lose their starting jobs because they don’t show enough to keep them, or for players trying to establish themselves as starters to prove they are worthy of such.  The third game of the preseason is the game in which starters get their longest look, some may play at a minimum the first half, and some even continue into the 3rd quarter.  It’s the closest thing to REAL game the preseason gives you.  That doesn’t mean there will be extensive game planning for the game, that’s not the case, but starters will get plenty of reps to get them ready for the regular season.

There’s so much talk, particularly on this blog as to who the starting RB should be.  Some feel it should be long time veteran Frank Gore, and some feel it should be young upstart Kenyan Drake.  As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t really matter.  If it makes some people happy that Gore is on the field for the first snaps of our 1st offensive series, so be it.  Kenyan Drake is the back that will be receiving the majority of the touches.  How much of a majority will depend on the game circumstances.  Drake is the explosive big play home run hitter, and he has the potential to do that on any play.  He showed that last season, and he will improve.  As I’ve pointed out several times, Drake was always the 2nd fiddle to backs like Derrick Henry, and T.J Yeldon.  It was partly due to minor injuries that hampered Drake, but also because the other backs were getting it done while Drake was not.  Drake is ready folks, and we will use him in a fashion that best suits the team.  He’s an excellent pass catcher, and explosive runner.  Gore is also an excellent pass catcher, although he doesn’t have the breakaway speed he once had, if there’s a short yardage situation where we need a yard or two, Gore would be my choice for sure.

Ryan Tannehill needs to get this team in the endzone. That delay of game in preseason game II in the redzone is just a drive killer, and unacceptable.  Honestly, I saw another series where he had a delay of game, at least according to the play clock they showed on the field, he got an extra 2 seconds somehow, but it wasn’t called anyway (maybe the play clock we saw was incorrect). The Ravens always give us fits, so I’m not expecting too many good things, but a couple of TD’s from the first stringers on offense would be nice.  I would also like #86, TE Mike Gesicki to show a pulse in the passing game, and go out there and catch some passes, maybe even a TD.

The defense allowed some big plays last week, so I’d like them to not allow that to occur.  I don’t follow any other teams closely, but it seems like a lot of ex-Dolphins are real chippy now that they are elsewhere.  Is it just the Dolphins that have ex players so disgruntled and petty?  Suh took a shot at the DL after Christian McCaffrey busted through for a 71YD TD run, in which Suh put on Instagram “Right up the gut”.  You would think these guys have enough to worry about with  the respective teams they currently play for, but . . .

I would say one of the biggest issues on the defensive side of the ball is is a math equation, X + ? = CB.   We know Xavien Howard is starting on the right side, but which CB starts opposite him is the key.  Right now, former slot and nickel CB Bobby McCain is tops on the depth chart, and he played eh against the Panthers.  Cordrea Tankersley took a step backwards, and Tony Lippett is M.I.A. with an ankle injury.  So that leaves Torry McTyer, Jalen Davis, Cornell Armstrong and Taveze Calhoun, as well as Tony Lippett if healthy, as the CB’s who have a shot, along with do everything Minkah Fitzpatrick, who may be pressed into action early on.  My hope has always been that either Tank elevates his play or Lippett gets healthy, and goes back to his 2016 form and forms a solid CB tandem.  At the moment, both seem in jeopardy.

Will Devante Parker ever be and remain fully healthy, and will he ever be the top talent receiver we thought we drafted at #14 in 2015?  Probably not, it hasn’t come together yet, and Parker was exercised the 5th year option in April of this year, so odds are, if Parker is going to have a great season, he will do it in ’19 just to torture Dolphins fans as he most likely walks when we don’t pay him $16M per after he catches 80 passes for 1400 yards and 10 TD’s. Besides Parker, we have Kenny Stills who is been a big play WR for us.  Stills averaged over 15 YPR every season except last season with Jay Cutler, where averaged just under 15, at 14.6YPR.  Danny Amendola will be taking over for Jarvis Landry as far as working the middle and short areas, and I believe Albert Wilson will be doing some of that as well.  Wilson may line up more on the outside, but he’s the type of receiver you get the ball with a little bit of separation to, he can turn that into a big play.  Jakeem Grant is another such receiver.  They want to get the ball into his hands, because Grant is a HR waiting to happen.  Wilson will probably get the occasional rushing play too, and Grant will as well.  As to which WR, if any, gets the 6th WR spot, my hopes are Frances Owusu makes his case.  Ford may have a slight edge, and of course due to investment, you can’t totally count Carroo out, but I think Carroo better show an awful lot if he wants to stay.

The TE situation is kind of muddy at the moment.  MarQueis Gray is now atop the depth chart, followed by A.J. Derby and then Gavin Escobar.  1st RD pick Mike Gesicki is now 5th, one spot behind Thomas Duarte, and just in front of Durham Smythe.  Message?  I think so.  If Gesicki goes up against the #3’s, he will probably do some damage there, but preseason depth charts are jumbled anyway, even for the dress rehearsal.  One thing is certain, MarQueis Gray is a good blocker, and I expect he will help get the run game going against an always tough Baltimore defense.  It seems like Gase wants guys with experience against the Ravens, and I can understand that.  John Harbaugh is a top NFL coach, and his teams are always disciplined and tough.

The Ravens have somewhat of a new look offense, with new WR’s Michael Crabtree from the Raiders, Willie Snead from the Saints, and John Brown, the speedster from Arizona, along with a refreshed rushing attack led by Alex Collins who had a very nice season last year with 973 yards rushing, and 6 TD’s, his first year as a starter.

The DL didn’t look bad, and Robert Quinn looked downright fast as he had his way with LT Matt Kalil.  The 71 YD run is not all on the DL, they are the 1st line of defense, and then the LB’s, CB’s and safeties.  All have to break down in order for that run to happen, and it did.  I still think our DL is way underrated, and I expect us to be pleasantly surprised.    The addition of Kendall Langford will only help, a nice mix of vets (Phillips, Spence and Langford) and youngins (Godchaux, Taylor and either Pittman or Moten)

All of a sudden, the fanbase turned on McMillan, who looked so slow, and out of position all night.  Relax!  I think McMillan will be a very good player for us this season, let him get some action, he knows what he’s doing, he needs to get up to NFL game speed.  Kiko is fine, definitely a solid player, as long as he’s not covering a mismatch TE or RB, and Baker looks poised to make some noise.

Things we all want to see, are red zone TD’s, no FIST PUMPS!  We want to see some player, whoever that may be, solidify the CB spot opposite Xavien Howard, no big plays or really long drives for the Ravens, and if the Dolphins are going to score TD’s, please do it while Ryan Tannehill is in so we can stop talking about that.  Most of all, we want all our Dolphins to get healthy, and stay that way!

Tannehill had a 110 passer rating, even though he dropped the ball once because it was so wet and he fumbled a snap exchange once, also attributed to the rain.

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Kendall Langford made several good plays and Vince Taylor continues to penetrate the backfield as well as get those huge hands up to block passes and FG tries.

  32. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jordan Phillips had one of his best games ever with a legit sack and a number of other fine plays.

  33. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Thanks for the updates Naples. No time to try and see the game.

    Go Dolphins ! 🏈

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Robert Griffin III also had a decent game, connecting on 9 of 15 passes for 66 yards. Griffin likely will see plenty of playing time next week against the Redskins, but it remains to be seen if he’ll make the 53-man roster. At the very least, Griffin’s performances could pique interest among coaches not happy with their current backup options.

    2. The Dolphins showed flashes of the dynamic offense that might just be waiting to break the surface and leap through the flaming ring that is the AFC East. Ryan Tannehill and the first-team offense finally found the end zone and looked decisive doing it. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown — a 16-yard strike to Danny Amendola. It was encouraging performance that showcased what Miami might accomplish through its passing game, even it did come against a reserve-laden Ravens defense. Running back Kenyan Drake also performed well, tallying 32 yards on four carries — most of which came on a 30-yard sideline scamper. He also caught a 36-yard pass. With the talent the Dolphins have in their receiving corps and Drake poised to springboard off the impressive numbers he posted last season, there’s reason for optimism in South Beach.

    First half, first impressions.

Tannehill needso to find a sense of urgency on the first play of the game.

Why does it always take 3 3-and-outs before he decides to start to get his shit together, putting the D on the field after with 14 minutes still in the 1st quarter? Then, followso with 2 more series just like the first.

Lots of plays with receivers wide open. Amendola looks like he did in NE. Great.

D….I thought fairly stout with penetration up the middle, and speed from the edges. VT, JP, Quinn.

    Hmmmmm.

  37. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Vintage Drake…what a stud…avg’d 8 yards per carry! we should just give it to drake every down after all if he gets 8 yards everytime he carries the ball we cant lose!

Wait….if you take is other 3 runs that netted 2 yards …hmmm….2… divided by ….3….that is less than a yard per carry, he avg’d 2 feet per carry on his other runs down from his avg 5 feet per carry,

I’m measuring in feet instead of yards to make your boy look good.

32-K.Drake up the middle to MIA 38 for 2 yards (25-T.Young).
Drake right end to MIA 44 for no gain (23-T.Jefferson, 99-M.Judon).
Drake right end pushed ob at BAL 45 for no gain (40-K.Young).
Drake right guard pushed ob at BAL 45 for 30 yards (36-C.Clark).

the way the game ACTUALLY went last night was on the first five first down opportunities Gase called pass plays the first four and on Drakes FIRST run on first down he broke one for 30 yards. The next play was an outside run that the defense swarmed for no gain The next two first downs were pass attempts, The one after that a pass attempt also, complete to Drake for 36 yards…the next two first downs….yup passes, Gase LIKES to pass on first down, Drake is a very good pass catching back who CAN and is willing to run up the middle. Rejoice.

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just some thoughts, Osweiler is a fucking statue, he’s gotta go. Fales brings so much more pace and energy to the offense, he definitely reminds me a lot of Matt Moore. Our deep depth on defense is pretty bad, and I’m shocked at how invisible Stephone Anthony is. I don’t think I’ve seen him make a tackle, and most times he’s not even near the ball. I feel bad for Lippett, I hope they give him time to heal, not sure about the PUP rules, but since he’s playing now, I don’t think he can go on the PUP.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh, first team defense looked very good, very happy about about that. Drake is a weapon man, He’s a dangerous player. On the other hand, not conceding anything, but I kinda get what Rob is saying, he’s not an extremely physical RB who will break that first tackle, but if he gets some room, he can make that a bunch of tacklers miss, but if he’s contacted early, he’s more times than not going to break away.

Our LBs are average, DTs average, CBs not sure yet, and we don’t have a real NFL quality backup QB but at least Tannehill, the OL, the DEs, and the skill positions look solid. I can tell ya that there have been MANY rumors of the G-Men wanting to move on from Eli Apple… team cancer of sorts where some of his teammates have been calling him out. While Apple did come from the “U”,

    OSU, not the U.

I watched game tape of him before the draft, and I hated him, nothing has changed. He tackles like Deion and covers like Walt Aikens.

Must have been mentioned last night, but how the heck does Kiko trot off to the wrong sideline? And he got a penalty for it. He still had a pretty good half though.

I saw the beginning of the Bill’s game, Allen started out like a statue, then had a nice scramble left, just short of a first down. Didn’t look very good throwing on the run.

Vontae Davis LOL on the first TD.

EXCELLENT correction, my friend. I’d mistook Eli Apple for Artie Burns. My bad!

And I’m right there with ya, I was NEVER a fan of Eli Apple since his college days.

    Thanks for the correction!

Thank you for asking, sir! Yes, he’s alright. By the time it got to his island (Molokai), things simmered down quite a bit. I was concerned for a time (when it was a Cat 5), but the models were correct and it was all gravy in the end.

    I appreciate you, Mr. Stanger!

Read Muai got a bunch of weather (Assume means Molokai too) even if seemed East side of the Island the most. Those waterfalls must be going crazy.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, I’d assume those waterfalls are going crazy, too! But thankfully, nothing tumultuous occurred.

  94. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Stanger,

There’s a video over at ESPN.com, where Kiko was interviewed about the play where he ended up on the Ravens’ sideline. Kiko said he flipped on the play and — for lack of better words — was temporarily disoriented, as a result. He was fine, just assumed he was going to the correct sideline without looking.

I’m getting to that point where I’m ready to give my regular season prediction for our Phins. I generally wait until after PSG3 to do as much.

Anybody want to keep the score for all of our predictions?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’re really hard to read this year. Ryan looks great, the receivers are getting open helping with that. The D seems like they could give up a big gainer on any play. Wake may have a down year on sacks, because Quinn may beat him to the QB. Drake looks explosive. Minkah looks great. Haack has 1 too many ‘A’s in his name.

My biggest fear is a slow start against the soft part of the schedule. My biggest hope is we’ll be right in the hunt with 4 games to play, which, even last year we were.

Every year recently, even though we haven’t had the best of teams, we needed to make a play here or there to make the playoffs, this year should be the same, except we should have enough playmakers to make that play. 10-6

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think you summed that up rather well! And LOL @ Haack having one too many ‘a’s in his name, too! 😀

  96. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I DO think we’ll have a winning record, but I’ve got question marks regarding just HOW quickly our ‘new’ O-Line will gel. Additionally, I’m somewhat ‘squeamish’ regarding our CB situation opposite Xavien, our overall starting LB play [Baker and (‘red-shirted’) Raekwon], and what IF Tannehill goes down again.

  97. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why make someone keep score, keep your own, find the last prediction and add yours to the list, if you cant find it wait until the next prediction comes out. Sure as shit, if we do it this way, even with the message on the bottom saying add yours to the list, someone will just post their prediction 😀

    I started with 10-6.

I’ll go 8-8 with some real Klunkers!
