Bubble Game – Preseason Game IV

The preseason finale game won’t mean anything to the starters, but it will mean everything to so many players desperately wanting to show enough to secure a roster spot.  The Dolphins at this moment have 90 players on the roster and they must cut that down to 53 by Saturday.  Think about that, 37 players will be removed from the roster.  There are a couple that may end up on the 8 game IR, and still others will eligible to be placed on the practice squad.  For all the others, this is at least temporarily, the end of their quest to be on an NFL roster.  Some will get picked up by other teams quickly, and others may get picked up when a need arises.

Another factor involved in the cut downs is the strategy by the FO and coaches as to how many players they want to carry at certain positions.  I’ll start on offense with the QB’s.  Historically, we have carried only 2 QB’s, and I expect that to continue.  I think David Fales will get the #2 spot, and Brock Osweiler will be cut.   At WR, it depends on whether we carry 5 or 6WR’s, but last year it was 5.  If we stretch it to 6, then it’s between Leonte Carroo, Francis Owusu, Rashawn Scott and Malcolm Lewis.  When we drafted LC3, and tried to look at the bright side, I hoped maybe he would be like Anquan Boldin lite and maybe push Parker for a starting job.  Now, LCIII is on the cusp of getting removed from the roster, and it’s real.  My hope is if we do carry 6, Owusu gets the nod.

The RB’s will most likely be 4, and I expect those to be Frank Gore, Kenyan Drake, Kalen Ballage and Senorise Perry.  I know Langford has history with Gase, but Perry plays ST’s as a KR and he has shown some ability to make some tough runs, so he gets the edge.

At TE, the obvious 2 are the recent draft picks Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe, and I personally like Gray for his ability to block both in line and also as an H-back/FB, and I believe they like Derby’s potential, so that makes 4 TE’s.

On the O-line, the injury to Ted Larsen will probably open a roster spot, unless he’ll be OK for the opener.  We know it’s probably not serious, but still may keep him out for a weeks.  Guys that were on the bubble like C Mike Matthews and OG Connor Hilland may get a shot if Larsen will be out for a while.  Asiata definitely just moved up and should make the roster.

On the D-line, there will definitely be some tough cuts.  With the trade that brought us Robert Quinn, and the draft pick of Charles Harris last season, we have a lot of DE’s, but at least one of them (William Hayes) can slide inside in rush packages, which gives us more flexibility, and may bump a potential DT off the roster.  We know Quinn, Wake, Phillips, Godchaux, Spence, Hayes, Branch,  and Taylor are in, that’s 8, which leaves maybe 2 more spots for any combo of Malveaux, Langford, Pittman and Woodard.  Tough cuts indeed!

In the secondary, it won’t be easy either, and ST’s may play a big part as to who gets to stay.  X and Good Ole Bobby are IN, Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald, Minkah Fitzpatrick IN, and then I’d have to think Maurice Smith and probably Cordrea Tankersley and Torry McTyer, but Tony Lippett’s health may put him on the IR (8 game), and Walt Aikens and Jordan Lucas are both excellent ST’s players, so that’s maybe one or 2 more roster spots for guys like Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis and Tavese Calhoun.

At LB, it’s a little muddled, with Stephone Anthony not really showing up, he could be in danger of getting cut.  We know Kiko Alonso, Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker are starters, but Mike Hull’s availability, or lack thereof may open up an opportunity for someone else.  Garvin is a solid vet who is a ST’s ace, so he’s in, Chase Allen was a former starter for us due to injuries, and he showed well enough, but the injury to Hull could possibly open the door for either Frank Ginda or Quentin Poling.

The final battle is ST’s, where kickers Jason Sanders and Greg Joseph have squared off all during TC and the preseason.  I think Sanders is in, and then we have P Matt Haack, LS God John Denney.

So that’s what I think about the roster, and Preseason Game IV is tomorrow against the Falcons in Atlanta at 7PM, the game will be replayed on NFL Network on Saturday morning at 6AM.

    hoo boy
I should not dip into this.

    Can’t help it.
I agree with Phish that “monkey it up” is NOT a common Southern colloquialism. I have lived in the South for a long long long time and never once heard that phrase, so no it isn’t “old school” Southern and I have kids who grew up recently down here and never heard any of them or their friends say that either nor have i ever read that phrase in “Southern lit.”

I have heard of “monkey business.” But no one thinks monkey business has anything to do with african americans unless they are trying to make the connection just to stir shit up, but it’s not a real thing.

I don’t know if deSantis was trying to be racist, or is so racist he slipped up, or what, but he might be too stupid to deserve being elected if he did not see that that remark would cause trouble.

Maybe monkey it up is more broad than just the South, I know I have heard it down here a d yes it was from older people so there is a era that the statement comes from. Like I said I have no idea the true histy, just the context I have ever heard it used in an I don’t remember once that it was used in a racial manner. Maybe this is a first for me, I have no clue what his true meaning was but it was very very stupid.

They are extremely nutritious as well as delicious when eaten ripe but still firm and tight to the touch. That will prevent a mushy texture from ruining the whole experience.

Your brain is fooling itself, “it allows you to do something?” that’s the reason you smoke?
The reason you smoke is it releases endorphin’s in your brain and your brain thinks it needs this. you are addicted to the most addictive drug ever, and you also receive all the toxic chemicals that come with it.
when i was 18 I smoked, But I loved to chase woman at the night clubs and at about 25 i realized that smoking caused me to have a stinch about myself…I smelled, I was driving down the road with my good friend Mark and i told him i was going to throw my cigarettes out the window, he said NO give them to me, then he said you won’t be able to quit after taking my ciggs.

well i never smoked again and my friend Mark is now living in NH with stage 4 lung cancer.

It was tough the first week, after that it was a cake walk, My friend Mark just recently quit with the help of chantix, if that can make him quit it must be very good.

Manitoba & MF-13 I highly advise you to quit smoking… you should try Chantix

Mikey you are going to like the Woodford Reserve the best, thats my prediction. Evan Williams is decent but not as good as the Woodford, nor the Elijah Craig you have. Knob Creek as Naples said is also pretty good. There is also a brand Bulleit which is really good and if you want something really different and delicious, Jefferson’s Ocean is a really good bourbon. They age it at sea for the last year or so in the aging process and it gives it a unique flavor.

I thought it was because his name sounds like a Star Wars character.

    😆

I suppose if Harrison FORD (Han Solo) were to have mated with some kind of alien: POONA FORD!

But in ALL seriousness, Poona is a STUD when it comes to stopping the run. Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) and I have talked about Poona since well before the Draft. We still can’t believe he went undrafted. There must have been some character flaw in Poona that caused all 32 teams to pass on him in the Draft.

Leave it to Sneaky Pete (Carroll) to give a guy a chance and reap the rewards of having faith in a player. Poona was absolutely a GREAT PLAYER at Texas.

Jay Leno did that with his Tonight Show money. Banked it and lived off what he made doing comedy.
    ———-
In my ignorant past, I couldn’t stand Jay Leno. I’ve since come to realize that he’s one of the GOOD guys out there. I now have MAJOR respect for that man… for all he does and for what he represents.

Leno is another SMART individual… so as to bank his ‘Tonight Show’ $$$.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Leno also owns hundreds of classic cars and motorcycles. So maybe that’s also an investment for him.

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Without looking up Jay Leno’s debut on TV, I distinctly remember him on “Good Times”. Mind you, it was a re-run that I’d seen in more recent years. That chin, man! I was like, “OH! THAT’S a VERY YOUNG Jay Leno!!!”. And sure enough, he was in the credits at the end of the show!

Wouldn’t collusion be if all the owners, or even a majority of the owners got together and decided not to sign Kaepernick to a contract. If they all individually didn’t want any part of him, that’s not collusion, and the case is so weak, it can’t win.

Ndamukong Suh is gone. So are the 13 penalties he accounted for last year, second most among all defensive tackles. Miami’s defensive line, by the way, had more penalties than any other last season.

Mike Pouncey is gone. So are his nine penalties. And Jermon Bushrod and his seven penalties are gone, too. The Miami offensive line had the most pre-snap penalties and penalty yards in the NFL last season.

Receiver Jarvis Landry and his seven penalties are gone, too. The Dolphins receivers were 31st in penalties and penalty yards last season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Godchaux has had some issues with encroachment as well. He needs to clean that up.

Vincent Taylor might be the surprise player at DT this year. He’s had a good camp and PS.

I believe Gase really likes Sterup and Matthews might be our back-up C with Brendel out for the last month.

I’m thinking the 4 back-up OL will be Sterup and Young, Asiata, and Matthews (if neither Brendel nor Larson are healthy.)

  96. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Starting Baker tonight is a calculated risk. We need him, but he needs as many snaps as possible to continue to learn.

Taylor on the other hand must show that he is more dependable against the run than Kendall Langford. I hope we can keep both of those guys actually, but that’s 5 DTs. I’d rather keep fewer LBs and more DTs (for the Dolphins in 2018, not every time or every year).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Taylor makes the team, he’s been good this offseason. He also bats down passes and blocks kicks. Some guys have to play in this game.

Godchaux might’ve picked that jumping the snap shit from Suh. Hope he sees it could get him cut.

Phillips had a good encroachment penalty in that goal line stand. He only lost a yd and got in the TE’s head, who then jumped and lost them the full 5.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Godchaux isn’t getting cut, he seems to be inactive tonight which signals that. He had a encroachment penalty in the 1st PS game right off the bat though.

100, Naples. Baker does need as many snaps as possible to be ready — as a rookie — to be a starter. GOOD post. Totally agreed.
