Bubble Game – Preseason Game IV

The preseason finale game won’t mean anything to the starters, but it will mean everything to so many players desperately wanting to show enough to secure a roster spot.  The Dolphins at this moment have 90 players on the roster and they must cut that down to 53 by Saturday.  Think about that, 37 players will be removed from the roster.  There are a couple that may end up on the 8 game IR, and still others will eligible to be placed on the practice squad.  For all the others, this is at least temporarily, the end of their quest to be on an NFL roster.  Some will get picked up by other teams quickly, and others may get picked up when a need arises.

Another factor involved in the cut downs is the strategy by the FO and coaches as to how many players they want to carry at certain positions.  I’ll start on offense with the QB’s.  Historically, we have carried only 2 QB’s, and I expect that to continue.  I think David Fales will get the #2 spot, and Brock Osweiler will be cut.   At WR, it depends on whether we carry 5 or 6WR’s, but last year it was 5.  If we stretch it to 6, then it’s between Leonte Carroo, Francis Owusu, Rashawn Scott and Malcolm Lewis.  When we drafted LC3, and tried to look at the bright side, I hoped maybe he would be like Anquan Boldin lite and maybe push Parker for a starting job.  Now, LCIII is on the cusp of getting removed from the roster, and it’s real.  My hope is if we do carry 6, Owusu gets the nod.

The RB’s will most likely be 4, and I expect those to be Frank Gore, Kenyan Drake, Kalen Ballage and Senorise Perry.  I know Langford has history with Gase, but Perry plays ST’s as a KR and he has shown some ability to make some tough runs, so he gets the edge.

At TE, the obvious 2 are the recent draft picks Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe, and I personally like Gray for his ability to block both in line and also as an H-back/FB, and I believe they like Derby’s potential, so that makes 4 TE’s.

On the O-line, the injury to Ted Larsen will probably open a roster spot, unless he’ll be OK for the opener.  We know it’s probably not serious, but still may keep him out for a weeks.  Guys that were on the bubble like C Mike Matthews and OG Connor Hilland may get a shot if Larsen will be out for a while.  Asiata definitely just moved up and should make the roster.

On the D-line, there will definitely be some tough cuts.  With the trade that brought us Robert Quinn, and the draft pick of Charles Harris last season, we have a lot of DE’s, but at least one of them (William Hayes) can slide inside in rush packages, which gives us more flexibility, and may bump a potential DT off the roster.  We know Quinn, Wake, Phillips, Godchaux, Spence, Hayes, Branch,  and Taylor are in, that’s 8, which leaves maybe 2 more spots for any combo of Malveaux, Langford, Pittman and Woodard.  Tough cuts indeed!

In the secondary, it won’t be easy either, and ST’s may play a big part as to who gets to stay.  X and Good Ole Bobby are IN, Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald, Minkah Fitzpatrick IN, and then I’d have to think Maurice Smith and probably Cordrea Tankersley and Torry McTyer, but Tony Lippett’s health may put him on the IR (8 game), and Walt Aikens and Jordan Lucas are both excellent ST’s players, so that’s maybe one or 2 more roster spots for guys like Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis and Tavese Calhoun.

At LB, it’s a little muddled, with Stephone Anthony not really showing up, he could be in danger of getting cut.  We know Kiko Alonso, Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker are starters, but Mike Hull’s availability, or lack thereof may open up an opportunity for someone else.  Garvin is a solid vet who is a ST’s ace, so he’s in, Chase Allen was a former starter for us due to injuries, and he showed well enough, but the injury to Hull could possibly open the door for either Frank Ginda or Quentin Poling.

The final battle is ST’s, where kickers Jason Sanders and Greg Joseph have squared off all during TC and the preseason.  I think Sanders is in, and then we have P Matt Haack, LS God John Denney.

So that’s what I think about the roster, and Preseason Game IV is tomorrow against the Falcons in Atlanta at 7PM, the game will be replayed on NFL Network on Saturday morning at 6AM.

Never mind the 60 man roster, how about allowing all 53 on the roster to be dressed and eligible to play on Game Day rather than just the 46. WTF is that?

I wanted to show the guy i was talking to what happend to him and then i spent the next 10 minutes fucking laughing my ass off. That shit is so funny, you can see the moment when Randy was like…oh shit this dude is about to go up to his elbow. His ass clenched up his legs went straight and he started kicking and squirming to get loose. LMAO.

Re-watching some of the games, Osweiler moves in the pocket decently, most of the time, but he never really plants his feet well. He keeps his feet moving but never sets them and a lot of times throws off the balls of his feet. I know i had see it a little bit previously but even on his better throws he doesn’t seem to get his feet set.

With some footwork work, he probably could clean up his game a good bit and be pretty solid. I saw several plays where he has room to move in the pocket and the pocket was collapsing around behind him and he stepped up and it was all really fluid.

The question would be is Gase could iron out those issues, because he was with Gase for a little while already and still has those issues, so i dunno.

Kevin Dodd who was a big name floating around here a couple years back was cut by the Titans. I dont think he has panned out very well though, neither he or his partner in crime, Shaq Lawson.

    • D's avatar D says:

Id be ok with taking a shot on Dodd and cutting one of our roster Bubble guys to make room. I think there is still potential Dodd could be coached up, and passing on one depth player for another wont cost us much to do. I also dont think it needs to happen either.

    • D's avatar D says:

Id look at any 53 cut as a player that we might get a little better depth at a position at. I think you weight it out like this, is Terrence Garvin still a better player for us. Since Garvin is probably on of our bubble guys, if Scales had been on our team the entire PS would he be getting the spot over Garvin. If not then you dont make the move, and if you do then you do. Its always about making any moves that improve the team. My opinion on that, Gavin is still a better asset for the team, so i wouldnt.

    Krishna
your description of your self sounds just like me.
I’m an old guy with crazy ideas and a sweet wife, too.

I wonder if it was something in the collective consciousness that produced that profile.

I would say that i strive to achieve nirvana through a perfectly balanced Zen, but
Striving to achieve a state of Zen is a paradox in that a state of inner peace should simply become through a sublimation of knowingness rather than an active process of conscious step-taking. Sort of an empirical gestalt-adjustment sequencing less overt than a 12-step counter-addiction paradigm.

So maybe I do aim for a fusion of Zen with a more Western “goals accomplishment” modality. I am intrigued by self-actualization techniques such as pre-task lucid visualization, in-the-moment mindfulness, and concurrent vigilant assessment through pragmatic metacognition. Socially, i am a parallactic empathizer with limitations against encroachment. Religiously, a secular humanist. Plus I like whiskey and kick-ass rock and roll. And football.

I think the Fest will be fun.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

That was pretty awesome and pretty much articulates the human experience as I have come to understand it in my twisted life. Although discerning acceptance from resignation allows intention as a companion in this journey.

Your reference to the fusion of East-West perspectives falls right in line with the message that ‘there are many paths to the One.’

Somehow, I was graced with a sweet companion during this journey. Intention played a part, whether a collective conscious experiment or the realization of one’s potential.

And, then there’s football. ….the ultimate team sport, a communion of talent, ideas, and strategy. You know good football when you see it.

I sure hope to see good Dolphin football this year while intentially savoring my personal vices.

      Having fun is an intention.

Serious Fun … an oxymoron I can really admire and enjoy.

Thanks for reassuring me on that, Mike. It’s a little scary with all the threats of violence that are made on here for me to bring my wife into harm’s way because of something i typed months ago. She never reads any of this, so I don’t want her to stumble into a hornet’s nest of confrontation when she thought all along that I spend time on the blog for fun and relaxation.

I should have just come by myself the first time to see if it’s safe, but i hate going anywhere without her, and a weekend by the ocean and being laid-back tourists in South Florida is something we enjoy together. Football is something i enjoy by myself.

I certainly didn’t mean to imply that the posters on here are douchebags, though.

OD did mention fights in the parking lot and his wife being afraid to come back to a game and stuff like that. I mean, I like dive bars myself sometimes, but there are places I won’t go anymore because i don’t want her to be exposed to that element.

But I see you can get shot in the mall or church now, so there’s actually no safe place.

NAPLES: AFTER a 4-year absence, my wife finally agreed to attend ONE Dolphins game last year. SHE STILL is extremely unhappy with Ross’s people who, so far, have not responded to several emails concerning this outrageous security breach in the Orange Parking lot. The fact that NOT ONE SINGLE security person was stationed in our section is INEXCUSABLE. NOW, my wife’s three back surgeries, plus a major surgery on her right foot (8 months to heal) has left her very questionable to attend any games this season. But she’s a trooper, and, in due course, will return despite her understandable misgivings.
RE: Your smoking concerns. As a former X-Ray tech and chief CT Scan tech, I am acutely aware of the impact of cigarette smoke. Altho’ I’ve NEVER smoked ANYTHING, my parents and 2 sisters all smoked when I was a young kid. As a result, my exposure to second hand smoke caused me to come down with middle age asthma attacks, one of which nearly killed me!! YOUNG STANGER has seen me depart a Fins game when one “fan” refused to put out a cigarette in a non-smoking part of the stadium. Again, no security people were around. I NOW deeply regret that I didn’t get in this asshole’s face and make it abundently clear to him NO SMOKING MEANS NO SMOKING even if you’re a Jets fan!! I PROMISE ALL OF YOU I WILL NOT TOLERATE a repeat of this incident.
      —————
To be fair, last season I did see ONE uniformed security guy in the southwest section of the Orange parking lot after the game was over – – an improvement over prior years when these guys would bolt the parking lot and help with traffic flow by the gates. I also have reason to believe that more emphasis will be placed on enforcing the smoking ban in areas where it is not allowed (due to several NEW complaints I’ve filed with ticket reps and their supervisors.) But, we’ll see.

Yeah, big question for me is who the QB will be that they sign to the PS.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        Correct BBM
very concerning, because none of our guys are PS eligible (I think) and you need a QB on the PS to run the scout team each week so the defense can see the opponent’s tendencies etc. Which is why so many people wanted us to draft a guy late. Did we need another CB/LB in the 6-7th? I guess we did, so then there’s UDFA QBs.

So Lauletta? or Woodside? or who do you see out there?

Ideally, i think you would want him to have at least a little honest potential of making the 53, but as soon as that PS QB graduates to the 53, he becomes the back-up and then you want him preparing to play just in case … so you are right back to needing a PS QB.

I am opposed to carrying 3 on the 53 unless your #1QB is a serious injury risk & your #2 is a raw rook like Bradford/Allen in Arizona.

Osweiler throws his passes on a rope and pretty accurate, Fales sucks everything from his, even short passes have an arc and are slow arriving. Get Osweiler in pocket presence training and we may have something.

The Owls are 21 point dogs, but I’ve predicted Oklahoma will win by only 14 (44-30). Florida Atlantic has too many NFL caliber players on the squad to get massacred in this contest. But the Owls do not have AS MANY NFL CALIBER PLAYERS as does Oklahoma, and therein lies the difference. Many of you may have seen Utah State come within a whisker of upsetting Michigan State (ranked #11) last night in East Lansing. The Spartans scored a come-from-behind winner with only 2 minutes left to play, despite being 23 point favorites. Miracles DO HAPPEN IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL!! But not this time. However, rest assured, I expect to be VERY HAPPY with FAU’s effort today in what I believe will be a VERY HIGH SCORING GAME.

    GO-O-O-O OWLS!!

Naples, we will find out (re: PS QB) by this evening I’m sure. My guy was Riley Ferguson who we wanted to bring in as an UDFA but he signed with the Bucs instead so we signed Petty instead which I did not mind. I think Petty has some upside and would have liked to see more of him. Ferguson got released by the Bucs before TC for personal reasons so don’t know what is up with him.

Naples. …caring for your wife and watching out for her well-being is your duty, IMO, as her husband. No wussy on that.

Trust me, due to my wife’s medical condition, we could not have felt more safe as we were surrounded by a Dolphin family who takes care of their own.

PENALTIES killed a promising opening drive for FAU after 3 first downs. Didn’t get the last penalty, though.

will it be Fales or Oswieler? i’m thinking Fales

Lippet maybe in jeopardy as well

Think it’s very possible we run with 5 WR’s, and put some guys on the PS.

We are douchebags here. But we are nice douchebags

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Garvin cut, that’s a surprise to me. I guess they might keep Anthony, although I’m not sure why

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I gave up on Garvin when he went one on one with the RB at the 2 yd line and the man scored.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Damn, Lippett cut. Really disappointed about that

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Anthony is still very young and a physical freak, so I guess they think, if they can just teach him where to go and what to do, they will have a quality player.

It took James Harrison what, 4 times cut before he learned enough to get a chance to play for Pittsburgh.

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Lippett is still hurt.

I know they like Sterup and young I guess but who are they keeping at OG?

I’m disappointed Asiata didn’t make it. I was hoping he would wind up being a gem after a year to become NFL ready.

  87. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Carroo had dead man walking about him and the Asiata were bizarre….. Lippett am hoping comes back. He’s not IR worthy, but doesn’t mean he is done either. Even with another team.

Boy, I wish we had the fucking 6 picks for DT3 and LC3. Or at least a couple of chances that those 6 picks might have become Reshad Jones type late picks!

what ever the 52 is at the end of TODAY will not be the same 52 they have the end of the day Tuesday. GUARANTEE (52 because I think they will over cut so they can quickly react. )

Owusu cut.. Damn I thought he would make the team.

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

7th round pick McTyer beat out Lippett. I’m not too broken up about losing Lippett, though I thought it was cool when he stepped in back in 16 and did well. It’s not like he was a 3rd round bust that we used 2 other picks to get…..

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Carroo so needed to be cut, he’s been gliding. Boy needs to get his shit together!

I’ve mentioned before, but watched his highlight reel from Rutgers. Same pattern every time…. a 15-20 yard outside slant to the sideline against smaller and far from NFL-type QBs. Guessing he didn’t have more in him. And yeah any 6’5″ guy can beat the heck out of me in basketball.

Lippett should be back after week 1, if he clears waivers. That way they dont have to guarantee his contract.

Surprise for me so far is Isaac Asiata. Not sure about keeping Stephone Anthony or what he is costing us. I imagine he is an expensive backup/ST’s player. He should know the D better than the other 2 who were cut and he is a freak athlete. I guess I would keep him over the others as well incase of injury plus he could be trade bait before the trade deadline when Hull is ready to come back. Get something for him instead of releasing him. What would Chucky give up for a athletic rush LB after losing Mack?
