2018 Season – Game 1 -Titans @ Dolphins

The day we’ve waited so long to arrive will be here in 3 more days. Yeah, there’s a game on tonight, and may even be a good one, but I’m looking right past it to Sunday, 1PM, Hard Rock Stadium.  This team has made a lot of changes and we will be relying on a lot young players, but if you look at the drafts we had last year and this year, I feel pretty confident.

On the offensive side of the ball, we brought in free agent LG Josh Sitton, I feel that is a clear upgrade.  Returning at LT is Laremy Tunsil, and he will most definitely benefit by playing next to Sitton.  At center, we said goodbye to Mike Pouncey, and traded for SF 49ers C Dan Kilgore.  In theory, it will be nice to have all our starting OL practicing together and hopefully developing a rhythm and a chemistry.  Kilgore will probably be an upgrade run blocking, but Pouncey was good last year pass blocking, and throughout his career, so Kilgore will have to play very well to in that regard.

Gone is the go-to-guy Jarvis Landry who caught over 400 passes in 4 years here in Miami, and in his place will be veteran WR Danny Amendola, as well as rookie TE Mike Gesicki, and WR Albert Wilson.  3 new faces for Tannehill, each with their own particular skill set.  I never loved Amendola, but that guy is a clutch performer, helping the Patriots big time in the playoffs with excellent performances.  Wilson was relatively underused in KC, and my hope is it’s not because he didn’t have the goods, it’s because they had too many weapons in KC with Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.  Gesicki can be the TE we’ve craved here for too long, at least as far as a receiver, his blocking is a work in progress.  Gesicki brings athletic ability we haven’t had, and he’s a very talented pass catcher.  We’ll also have the oft (minor injured) Devante Parker and Jakeem Grant as well.  Grant will bring excitement, and Parker disappointment, just the way it usually is.

Ryan Tannehill returns from injury as he hasn’t played a regular season game since December 11th of 2016.  Tannehill is acutely aware this is his team now, and if he can elevate his play, the team will come along as well.  This is a great opportunity for him, I hope he makes the most of it.  With Kenyan Drake, Frank Gore and Kalen Ballage, I think he has the tools to succeed.  I think the backs will share a workload, but Kenyan Drake is the primary back.  There won’t be a workhorse among the 3, but Drake is the lead, Gore next, and then Ballage and Senorise Perry.

On defense, we let go a pro-bowl caliber DT, one who played an exorbitant  amount of plays for us, and he will be replaced by the frequent rotation of Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Akeem Spence and Vincent Taylor, with an occasional sprinkling of  DE William Hayes.  At LB, 2nd YR Rookie Raekwon McMillan returns after missing last season with an ACL injury.  He’s joined by Kiko Alonso and and a combo of Jerome Baker, Stephone Anthony and Chase Allen.  The biggest change is at CB, where Xavien Howard returns at RCB, but opposite him will be Bobby McCain, who was previously the slot and nickel corner.  Depth wise, Cordrea Tankersley, Torry McTyer and rookie Cornell Armstrong round out the CB position.  At safety, a few veterans return in Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald, Walt Aikens, but they are joined by do it all rookie sensation Minkah Fitzpatrick.  We’re going to see him on the field A LOT!

So on to the game!  Tennessee will be lead by 5th YR QB Marcus Mariota, and the run game led by big back Derrick Henry (Kenyan Drake’s RB mate at ALA), former Patriots RB Dion Lewis, former Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews, 3rd YR WR Corey Davis and veteran TE Delanie Walker.  The Titans like to impose their will with a power run game led by a tough OL with excellent bookends Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin.  Henry had previously been splitting carries with RB DeMarco Murray, but with Murray out of the picture, Henry will be getting the lion’s share of carries.  We have struggled defending the run, at least in the preseason, so we’ll see if we can hold here at home.

On offense, Devante Parker is OUT, so Albert Wilson will likely replace Parker as wideout.  In the preseason, the offense was a fast pace, no huddle short pass game clinic.  Not sure if that continues in the regular season, or if we’ll be more balanced with more of a rushing attack, and also get the TE’s more involved in the passing game as well.  We have a rookie kicker, and supposedly Jason Sanders has ice running through his veins.  Let’s hope we don’t need to find out!

Lol, Atlanta coach almost did an FP after that FG.

  3. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Geez…

I see Corey Clement and Darren Sproles actually (and successfully) try to block. Jay Ajayi? NOPE!

I’m beginning to understand why the Eagles will only put Ajayi in on certain downs/sits: he’s a very limited player. DANGEROUS, mind you… but limited… almost like an Adrian Peterson in that Peterson can’t block nor catch out of the backfield or downfield.

As such, I now understand why Gase traded Ajayi… and his primadonna attitude made it all the easier to do.

This game is still UGLY!!! Just bad football in so many ways. The CBA TC rules and the watered down PS doesn’t allow for teams to be ready to play the RS. This looks like a PS game except with the starters in there. NFL, you’re killing your product on so many levels.

You could see tonight many players were not ready to play a complete game. They were gassed. Not enough offseason work but we know it’s all about money now. Sad.

I hope the Phins look more prepared out of the gate than these two teams did tonight – both championship caliber teams at that.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just a pet peeve, I wish the Dolphins official site wouldn’t designate players at specific positions when they don’t know what they’re talking about – Jones as a FS, Alonso as a MLB or Davis as an OT. Jones and McDonald are interchangeable at S, Alonso is most likely WOLB and Davis is at RG. Who decides this crap?

as for Ajayi, i was disappointed last year when they dumped him, at first i had thought Gase had a reasonable back-up to fill his role and after the first game post Ajayi i knew that wasn’t the case and i knew we were doomed.

Ajayi’s gone..it’s spilt milk, my hopes this year rely on Gore, if he can stay healthy he can fill that role nicely…maybe Ballage/Perry can help in that area as well but Drake can not run btwn the tackles, if we rely on him we will have a losing season.

Think that Escobar should do fine in Grays role…

Has plenty of blocking experience over his career as the #2 TE to go to guy TE Jason Whitten, and made the most of his receiving opportunities with 12 TD’s on just 30 career receptions!!!

Probably a more experienced blocker than Gray,
    and definitely has more TD’s

though I’m not sure of Grays stats,
but he’s been here awhile blocking
with not many catches/TD’s (off the top a my head)

Yes Gray was an intricate part of what we’ve been planning towards the run,

But I think Escobar is plenty capable and experienced

    Just not quite as familiar…

Was hoping to keep him all along,
Glad he was still available to us
for exactly what we need to replace Gray…

    SORRY FOR GRAY,
    GOFINS!!!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Blocking experience doesn’t equal good blocking. Gray was a true H-Back type that could line up in line or in the backfield, and block well. I don’t think Escobar is going to replace his skill set at all.

        I know what Gray brought,

        Presently as a blocker

Are Gesicki, Smythe, or Derby better run blockers??

However, Gore’s streak of starting 108 consecutive NFL games will likely come to an an end unless the Dolphins decide to start him over Kenyan Drake.

I hope he get’s the 76 yards he needs because his streak will end this Sunday for sure.

Brother, EVERYTHING is on Twitter these days. It’s the quickest and most convenient way to break news. It’s SO quick and convenient, that the tweets from some of these web hosts actually forget to update their web sites.

And if you so chose to join Twitter, make sure you follow the beat writers: they generally have more specific data than even the Miami Dolphins website.

If one is in a fantasy league, Twitter is almost an invaluable tool these days.

    Non-football and non-political news that I find intriguing…

Tesla stock dropped by 10% today, after Elon Musk was seen smoking a blunt on Joe Rogan’s podcast (with video) yesterday (I didn’t see him inhale, TBH). Several very high ranking officials at Tesla resigned after yesterday’s ‘incident’.

Last I had heard/seen, the US Air Force is looking into this matter. I assume that Musk has contracts with the US Air Force, hence their pending investigation.

    CRAZY!!!

We have Tennessee coming into town, they are a physical football team and will jamm 6’3 250lbs Derrick Henry up the middle at our young and small LBers, the question is can we stop him without using other resources?

then you have Marcus Mariota a mobile QB, will they use Kiko to spy him? we need to contain him.

one thing we have going for us is the hot weather of S FL, this should be a good challenge and a good indicator of how good this Dolphin team is against a team that made the post season last year.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Henry will definitely be a good test. We’ll see if Baker can handle that assignment, not that he’s the only LB, but Henry is a big boy, and Baker is not. I know Baker will stick his nose in there, we’ll see if he can bring the big boy down. Delanie Walker is a sneaky good receiver at TE, if he’s allowed to run free, he will hurt us too. Looking forward to seeing how we match up with Rishard Matthews too.

We sucked at 3rd down proficiency last year, near the bottom of the league, and as you all know IMO the reason for that was the lack of an early down run game, we had the fewest rushing attempts last year in the entire league.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

31.68 3rd down proficiency in 2017, we were number 31 in that category only team worse than us was Houston.

It’s real funny how we had the best RB in the league (1.8 Drake) (LOL) who gained the most yards and were the worst on 3rd down?

HOPE TO SEE SOME OF YOU FOLKS AT THE GAME (Section 120, Row 30).

Randy — if my home phone went down it is up an running now and still same number. So give me a call. And will shoot for 11:30 at the bar. Not sure what parking is going to be like with the changeover though.

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OT Jack Conklin and DE Harold Landry are both out for the Titans

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was watching some NFL coverage and listening to some on the radio the last few days. Man I really hope we’re better than a lot of people think we are.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What were they saying and who was saying it?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just in general they treat us like we’re not even worth discussing. Only Peter Schrager thinks we’re better than people think and will make the playoffs.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I try not to get too caught up in it
But the national media is really not optimistic about our season

I don’t blame bc last season was kind of ugly
And we didn’t look anywhere near the offense Gaze had in mind

But I don’t remember seeing people sing the praises of the eagles last off-season

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

No Conklin? Wake needs to feast. Maybe they’ll shift protections his way and Quinn will need to get home.

If they do run a lot as people are expecting, it’ll be a great game for Raekwon to step up and show what he can do.

  86. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Schrager always likes us for some reason. I don’t really think he’s very football smart, but he says nice things about us. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He actually knows who’s on our team though and doesn’t harp on the 4 players we moved on from like everyone else. Many people seem to forget we were 6-10 with those 4 players so losing them must mean we’re definitely worse now. They also always say we lost those 4 players and don’t state it that we moved on from them so there’s that.

  87. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I don’t really care much what media types say about us…..never do. They usually all follow the same narratives and story lines whether they are true or matter anyway. Most of them are morons. Lol
    ***
I will say I kind of disagree with the idea that getting rid of good players….and they were all good players….makes you better. Saying we were crappy with them doesn’t mean the specific players were crappy. The team was also 10-6 with those same players, so the logic doesn’t hold up. For me, we got who we got now, and you move on from there. Remember…..we don’t put W/L records on players around here….ahem Tannehill. The media is just doing what they do. It doesn’t mean they’re right. Unless you like their opinion, of course. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya I don’t either. I was just commenting on what I was hearing because I did pay attention recently being that the season is just underway and I was listening for FF info. I was just sharing my thought that I hope we’re better than what they’re saying.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know a couple of the FF prognosticators put our game as one of two potentially low scoring games. I get that, until we prove we can score TD’s, it makes sense to think we can’t because we haven’t.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – The league you have Julio Jones in, is it a PPR? 1/2PPR?

  90. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I hope this is the year we start seeing tunsil be the dominant presence we hoped he would be when he was drafted

It would be nice If the recent 1st rounders on the roster: Parker, Tunsil, Harris and even Minkah play like top tier talent

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m optimistic we can be a solid team until proven otherwise. Not 12 wins or anything but competent, hopefully. I do think this is a transition year, so my expectations are tempered.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah that’s where I’m at until they prove otherwise. If we were really void of talent and potential I’d say that. But I do believe we have a lot of potential and could shock people. But that has to happen on the field, not on paper.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, I can’t really get on Ajayi for the 6-10 season because we were 4-3 with him as ORob likes to point out, and he really didn’t play much his rookie season in 2015 when we also went 6-10. Pouncey missed most of the season in 2015 so can’t really put that on him either. But Suh and Landry have been part of two 6-10 seasons so if they were so good but we still finish 6-10 how is it such a loss? Their impact wasn’t that great.

Suh is a stud player but he really didn’t live up to his contract and his numbers went down every year. He was never the pass rusher we expected. We’ve all been through why we moved on from these 4 players for different reasons. My point is we can be bad without them. I really don’t know what this team is yet because we haven’t seen this team as currently constructed play yet. I’m hoping for the best. 🙂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

On that same token Tim, you could say we were 6-10 with hose players, we might have been 3-13. There’s always a different perspective to look at things through.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL @ hose players! Seems about right! 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sure but who cares 6-10 or 3-13 is still a bad team. My point is they didn’t elevate us and Suh’s contract was too big and Landry wanted to be paid like an elite WR. Pouncey was also being paid well but the team didn’t want to baby him anymore. It was time to move on. There were also some character issues with me first type stuff.

Like I said we all know why the changes were made. Now we’ll see if those moves were the right thing to do. I’d be shocked if we were any worse without them.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All that said, this is a big season for Tannehill. If he doesn’t play at a high level and this team is ho-hum there is going to be a lot more questioning whether the team should continue to roll with him. That’s just the way it is.

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Doggy! Happy Hangover brother!

  95. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Home Dogs on opening day 😦 As I read various “predictions” online I see a lot of LBer bashing, which is a lazy memory of last year’s LBers. This unit is mostly new and we haven’t seen what they can do through the course of an entire game. so, whatever. I think we go conservative in this game as long as we get results.

Howie? or whoever is keeping the tally:

    Fins 17, Titans 16

  96. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

What will it take for Miami to succeed this year?? it all comes down to one one player, Frank Gore, if he can run like he has in the past and be healthy the entire season i believe we will contend. if not we will lose unless of course Ballage or Perry can handle the load, I don’t want to count those guys out as i haven’t seen enough of them.

If Gore can effectively pick up 4 to 6 yards on 1st down it will make our 3rd down proficiency go up, it needs to be about 45%, this will affect our defense in a positive way giving them the rest they need and keeping the opposing D on the field.

running the ball effectively will have a positive trickle down effect for the whole team

  97. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This year I will make my decision on whether I like Gase as HC or not. I have had serious issues that I have told my self to wait and see on that I do not like about his style. This year will determine if I am just picky or if he really is the problem I FEEL he is. (not think his is, notice I said)

Gase likes to pass on first down and does so so often it is predictable. I prefer to run on 1st down.
Gase likes screens WAY more than I do. I HATE screens. (mostly because we haven’t been able to execute them properly in my living memory)
Gase likes an “Attacking” defense. The problem I see with the attacking defense is it leaves us too open to being gashed for big plays and for giving up way too many 3rd and long.
LOSE THE FUCKING WIDE NINE ALREADY! It opens the middle of the defense up for easy running yards when the DT’s are already 5 yards apart!
