2018 Season – Game 2 – Dolphins @ Jets

1-0 baby!  The Dolphins started the season at home against the Titans, in one of the most bizarre and easily the most lengthy football games in the history of the sport.  7 hours, and 10 minutes.  Wow!  Lightning strikes in the vicinity of Hard Rock caused a couple of weather delays which put the total game time from start to finish at 7:10, which is the longest game in NFL history.

The good thing is that the Dolphins team remained focused on the task at hand, winning the game, and I would give some credit to Head Coach Adam Gase for keeping his team prepared, and to GM Chris Grier and VP Mike Tannenbaum for shedding the roster of the “ME” players and building a team of players who share a common goal, helping each other make the Dolphins a winning team.

The Dolphins had a nice balance on offense, Kenyan Drake getting the most touches as expected, and it was especially nice to see Frank Gore come in and spark the offense.  He looks fresh, especially for a veteran RB with 13 NFL seasons under his belt, and over 3200 carries.  I think it’s a great tandem, they complement each other very well.  The O-line did their job well, and both backs were able to move the ball.

Ryan Tannehill looked very good in the game, but a couple of poor throws somewhat derailed his fine effort.  I really thought the throw in the end zone to Gesicki, whether Mike slipped or not, was too flat, not enough arc, and also just thrown too close to the defender.  Make that throw more towards the sideline, and deeper towards the back of the endzone with more arc, and there’s very little chance if any that it gets picked off.  The other was either an overthrow or a miscommunication with Jakeem Grant, and without certainty as to which, I can’t blame Tannehill on that one.  The play-action TD pass to Kenny Stills was a beauty, great protection, and a very accurate strike for the TD.  Take away the end zone miscue to Gesicki or the other INT intended for Grant, and Tannehill has done exactly what I would hope he could do.

The Titans after the injury to starting QB Marcus Mariota were not the same team, but the injuries to starting OT’s Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin, LT and RT respectively is really what killed the Titans.  Those 2 are aggressive, mean and nasty run blockers, and the Dolphins limited the run game, especially when big back Derrick Henry was in, to 26 yards on 10 carries.  Dion Lewis, who is quicker and shiftier had more success, rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries.

On defense, the first thing I noticed right away, was Minkah Fitzpatrick.  He didn’t do one spectacular thing on Sunday, but damn if he wasn’t always around the ball.  You just can’t teach what he has, that desire to digest football knowledge, study film to learn players and teams tendencies, and the desire to work in the weight room to become the best player he can be.  Minkah had that before he got here, but he’s ours man, and I’m thrilled we have him.  He was in on 6 tackles, but despite that, he just seemed to be so involved in the game, and he was out there a lot. If anyone has snap counts, I’d love to know how many, as well as for the D-line.  The frequent rotation worked as well as I could have hoped, and the youngins Godchaux and Taylor look like all the world to have been brilliant draft picks.  You just don’t expect a 5th and 6th RD defensive tackle to give you what Godchaux and Taylor are giving us.  Think of how absurd it is to pay a player over $20M to do what these guys are giving us!  Talk about value, it’s insane!  The LB’s weren’t asked to do everything, as we saw 3 safeties out there often enough. Kiko led the team with 6 solo tackles, and both Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker had 3 solos and 3 assists.  Very possible this type of thing plays out the entire season.

The Jets come off a very successful road win against the Detroit Lions.  They banged up QB Matthew Stafford pretty good, and the battered QB threw 1 TD and 4 INT’s.  While Matthew Stafford hurt his team, the Jets rookie QB did the opposite.  Sam Darnold played a very solid game, despite throwing an INT on his very first pass attempt.  The rookie bounced back well however, and helped lead his team to an impressive 48-17 drubbing of the Lions. He had a nice balanced rushing attack with Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell with a 1-1A type approach.  Crowell finished with 102 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD’s and Powell had 12 carries for 60 yards.  Quincy Enunwa has resumed his spot as the go-to-guy of the offense, after being out with an injury last year.  Robbie Anderson remains the big play danger, he’s like our version of Kenny Stills, except of course Anderson threatens police officers with vulgar things he will do to their wives, but on the gridiron, they are similar threats.

Dolphins vs Jets are always crazy games, as last year’s Fest game was evidence of such.  The Dolphins pulled out a last minute victory when Bobby McCain intercepted Josh McCown with 47 seconds remaining in the game, allowing Cody Parkey to kick the game winning 39 yard F to win it 31-28.  What a FEST-ivious win!  There will not be a MetLife Takeover Fest this time, but hopefully the NYC Dolfans contingency will be sufficient to help our boys complete another successful takeover that ends with a Dolphins victory.

If the Dolphins can continue their success rushing the football with Drake and Gore, and keep the pocket clean for Tannehill, we should be able to score against the Jets.  Devante Parker should be back, but I just can’t count on him to be a big role player, so I won’t.  We have enough weapons with Stills, Amendola, Wilson and the 2 backs, and anything we can get from Gesicki and Parker is just gravy.  On defense, just limit Bilal Powell.  Crowell doesn’t scare me, but Powell just rips off those big plays, so we need to keep him in check.  Darnold probably won’t be shaken, we should treat him like any QB, not expose ourselves with a ton of blitzes.  I think if we do that, he might make us pay, so just stay disciplined, keep using the 3 safeties often, and I think we can beat them.  Don’t let Anderson get behind the secondary.

Good write up, Mike. All the coverage I see on NFLN is about the same handful of teams. I saw the top 5 plays of the week on one of the shows and the pass to Stills was better than all of them but no mention. Fuck em!

    Go Phins!!!!

“Think of how absurd it is to pay a player over $20M to do what these guys are giving us! Talk about value, it’s insane!”

MIke E going after Suh (and awesome job)…. but yeah the young beef in the middle looks good. But there job is just to clog and let the DEs go to sacktown. Hoping we see more of that on Sunday.

    • D's avatar D says:

The Rams are doing what we should have done if we were going after Suh and we needed to be in the position that they are in to have done it. I still dont think the move to get Suh was a bad one, we just didnt do anything with that move after we made it. That needs to be an “on the precipice and ready to strike” kind of place shooting for a Superbowl run in a year or two. We weren’t even close so the move was wasted.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Could not agree more. Think Suh a great player and will never blame a guy for getting as much money as he can, but he was not the player we needed.

RAISE YOUR HAND if you don’t like what the national media has to say about our Phins!!!

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Nice write up Mike E!

I hope we crush Darnold and put him out for the season! Better, end his career. I have nothing against him, but he is the “Jet’s Savior” and cannot allow anyone to “save” the Jets.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The media is in full ball lapping mode with Darnold as well. And it started prior to their win over the Lions.

      • D's avatar D says:

To be honest we might be doing the same thing if we were in their position. I mean they had nothing to look forward to at QB so having a high draft pick, the guy most predicted to be the number 1 overall pick, its at least something for them to be excited about. They had this level of excitement once before about a USC rookie QB taken in the first round. I would remind them of that if they ever get aggressive with their comments of how excited and confidant they are.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get the fans being excited but the national media talk about the guy constantly. It’s not even about them not talking about the Dolphins, it seems like it’s a 10 team league and they just regurgitate the same story lines constantly. I find it annoying when looking for NFL coverage.

  8. D's avatar D says:

Mocksters have dropped us to picking in the top 5 vs the top or the top 3 as they had previously….i guess thats a good sign, but they have us taking Hebert and doing a QB reboot.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

A couple of things about the Defensive snap counts I posed above.

    1. I’m surprised Fitz only played 44 snaps. It SEEMED like he was in for a lot more plays.
    2. I’m surprised that McDonald played 100% of the snaps and Jones only got 88%.
I read that McCane also had an offensive snap. What did he do?

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    National Media…..only not this cute

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just voted for the Jet’s game again for the fest and it registered my vote. 18-11 now. Why did we pick the Lions again? JUST FREAKING KIDDING STANGER SETTLE DOWN!

Why is the poll still active?

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Does anyone remember what McCane did on offense.

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We have never beaten the Texans in their stadium. This year that ends!

    • D's avatar D says:

Im pissed we dont have a shot at ending that ass whipping streak we are on with the Ravens. That team just has out number like few others.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This isn’t the year I would want to play them, their defense is really good. Maybe in the playoffs. LOL

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Armando Salguero

    @ArmandoSalguero
I ask Adam Gase if Josh Sitton injury is serious because banged up doesn’t sound like that. And he won’t say it is not serious.

Says tests ongoing. Says took a weird hit. Won’t say what body part involved.

    Season collapsing!!!!!!

    NOOOO!!!!!

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tim, I was going to say, but you already did, “Maybe in the playoffs”

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – That was cool the snap count breakdowns. The DT’s truly rotated nearly equally, with Taylor getting a little less that the others, but that’s great to see. Each guy made his contribution, which is precisely how it should work.

    • D's avatar D says:

12 tackles out of the DT position is really good.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Some of Hayes 32 snaps were at DT and not DE, so he took some away from the DT’s. (Can say for sure it was Taylor specifically) but I agree, Burke did a good job rotating them in and I didn’t see a drop off without Suh at all. (of course the Titans were missing their two starting Tackles, but typically the DE’s go against the OT)

Let’s just hope it works out in the long run throughout the season!

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just checked and we only had 80 tackles the entire year from the DT position. That equals 5 per game…..

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The entire DL was very active. We didn’t get any sacks but we chased their QBs deep in the pocket and out of the pocket. 20-38 52% comp. pct. and only 7-79 for their WRs.

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Cool breakdown of snaps but I wonder about accuracy. They have Quinn with .5 sacks. We didn’t get any sacks.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

People focus on the sacks but we did get pressure on them and had 3 picks. Turnovers are more important.

  20. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Wow, only 80 tackles total from the DT’s last year. You cannot extrapolate 1 game stats for an entire season but if you could we would have 192 tackles from DT’s this year…….

  21. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s interesting, this could be an instant replay of last year. We started the season with a win, then went up to NY where we got pummeled. Hopefully we can rewrite the script this year!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Man, I hope so. I don’t want to have to endure a Jet win, especially if it’s an ugly game. I’m probably going to watch the game with my friend Tony who is a Jets fan, so that will be tough as well.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Thankfully, I am not friends with a single Jets fan lol.

I think if our oline holds up and can create some space for our RBs, it’ll open up the offense and we’ll be alright there. I have no idea what to expect from our defense vs their offense.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      No,no,yes, yes & yes!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cutler looked rusty in that game and was erratic all day. That was the game that had us talking about Cutler’s dead arm.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I have tried, but I can’t remember anything about the game except for the fact we got a cheap TD at the end or we would have been shutout. I must have been plastered by halftime.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah we were basically shut out.

  22. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Well, I’m divorced from the Jet’s family now so I don’t have anyone in my immediate circle to worry about. It sucked back when I was married. The entire family (except my ex-wife) were stinking jet’s fans. It was disgusting! I would get pummeled by them when we lost.

  24. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Why does the media have us ranked behind the Titans… who we just beat?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s why those rankings are the work of fart sniffers.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I was looking through some rankings and saw some people make decent adjustments, but most just gave us backhanded compliments or focused more on the Titans screwing up rather than us possibly being good. It’s such lazy media work, and frustrating to us.

If we beat the Jest this week, there will undoubtedly be ‘extenuating’ circumstances for haters to continue to hate.

The best way to respond is to ‘just keep winning, just keep winning’ lol.

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah it will be well Darnold is just a rookie.
    ——————-

Yep, that should be a plus. I’m thinking we’ll see a bunch of exotic looks and blitz packages to try and rattle the rook. Even in college he had a tendency to make mistakes (from what I’ve read). So maybe we can create some opportunities on D.

  34. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

With apologies to my man Old Dolfan, I feel the media is doing EVERYTHING it can to create a divide among us Phin fans. We just might be the most POLARIZED NFL team in America.

I took the fight to Evan Silva (most of y’all will remember… “Silly Boy”). He was ALL ABOUT the fact that he didn’t like Steve Ross, nor GM Jeff Ireland. However, we reconciled, in the name of PEACE.

I had a buddy that did shit like that to us all the time in public, He once farted at a McDonalds back before they got rid of those plastic booth things. He tried sneaking it out but it reverberated off those seats and made a helluva racket drawing the entire stores attention. Without missing a beat he jumped up and punched one of our other buddies who was sitting next to him and screamed “Jesus, dont ever embarass me like that again!” and stormed out of the McDonalds and left my buddy sitting there just in pur shock and embarrassment. He didnt have any way out of it so he just hung his head and got up and left lol.

He got another buddy while walking through the mall. He yelled out “Hell no i wont touch your dick, stop asking!” and just kept walking. Other dude just froze lol. It we went in public with him we either were prepped up for whatever he might throw at us or we just went with it. Shock and awe was his thing, he just liked seeing how people would react.

I just saw on the weather report that the Hurricane should die down to a 3 before making landfall as a 1. Hopefully that will take the punch out of it. The Atlantic coast gets one benefit that we never do. Most the time it weakens a little before landfall, at least the northern Atlantic ones do. Gulf storms tend to strengthen a little before landfall.

I thought the D pressed…and they need to against the rookie this week. He’s new…challenge him with confusion and pressure, make him think faster than he’said ready.

Nice conversation before the new blog. I, too, feel across the spectrum. Why can’t we just get along? We’re all in this together.

Pssst. Mike is senile, we try not to upset him about it but he misses things from time to time these days. Don’t think I ever ate that one. Mostly salisbury steak, turkey with gravy and fried chicken.
    ——————————————-
I have probably had most of them at least once….90 percent of people who went to college did. I also think i have segment of my DNA thats a ramen noodle since i ate a lot of those too. Too easy and too cheap to pass up, great breakfast for “i got back at 5am and i need to get up at 7 for my class at 8”.

Got really creative with the Ramen too, a few different condiments can change that shit into half the soups you get at any number of Chinese resturants. I could get Ramen and some eggs, egg drop, Ramen, Hoyson, Fish sauce and/or a little vinegar, made a pretty close replica to the hot and sour soup. Ramen, Siracha, Hoyson/Soy, minced garlic, and some red pepper flakes not a bad replica of Pho.

No that pink sludge shit is way worse than spam. Spam is actually not too bad but its like Bologna, its much better if you cook it just enough to render the fat that’s particulate in that loaf and also give it a nice sear on the outside. I every so often have to have some. It like once every other year kind of infrequent, but i just get a desire to have spam (which i usually cube and cook together in an omelet or mixed in to the scrambled eggs). Or ill have a just simple spam sandwich. Im like that with Brunsweiger too and potted meat. I guess it just takes me back to times in my youth that are fond to me, and with what they are doing to food these days with the hormones and GMO’s etc that stuff really isnt any worse for you than the stuff they are trying to convince you is healthy these days.

    like Spam?
I tried to eat spam one time. I couldn’t do it.
    ————————————————-
No that pink sludge shit is way worse than spam.

Scary observation….wtf was the yellow shit in that BBQ pork meal splattered all around the mashed potatoes and pork loaf. If you say butter, then explain that color yellow because butter nor margarine melt like that and produce that color lol.

A little off subject, but i know Italian is good up in Joisey, its probably more Sicilian style, but i digress. One of the best places i have ever had Italian food is Pittsburgh. The Italian there is amazing. One little dark and desolate place, not really the greatest part of town by looks of the area either, was this little Italian place. Really dark, no fucking windows in the place, not one. Big fat man sitting at the end of a long table that was full of people. Straight out of a Scorsese film, fucking delicious food and though i like it, Italian isn’t one of my favorite food types. This place though, unbelievable.

    Naples,

My good friend, I REALLY DO appreciate your 8:09 PM post, Bro! I felt it to be constructive, positive, and in very good faith. KNOW that I respect you, man… never doubt that for a minute, seriously.

By the way, I really don’t care for your self-disrespect: you ARE talented(!), even if poetry and music aren’t your strong suits. EVERY SINGLE PERSON has talent in some way, shape, or form. My nephew’s step-brother is autistic, man, and he’s had SO much trouble fitting in with society. But ya know what? That kid can DANCE like NOBODY’S business!

EVERYBODY has a gift, sir. And I’m talking to somebody (YOU!) who has a gift/talent.

Thank you for reaching out, my friend. It certainly wasn’t my intention to ‘label’ last night by my use of the term “lib”. And of course (and in hindsight), I could have done much better to express my thoughts and feelings. My GREATER point (which was lost) was to express how GRAND it felt to be UNITED with our fellow countrymen, in the days following September 11th, 2001.

Sorry that I funked up my message, and thank you for reaching out, Naples. I WILL “Let it Be”, as the GREAT Sir Paul McCartney once coined. You are a very, very good dude, my man! And let us NEVER lose our friendship over politics.

Here’s one of my FAVE songs that Sir Paul ever did… and he did it with Michael Jackson…

You the man. It takes a big man to take a step back and reevaluate their actions or statements. I know you’re a good dude, M13. You and I have always gotten along far more than we’ve argued, and we share a number of connections.

I apologize for my own statements, as I could have gotten my own message across differently and in a more civil manner.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And I know your post was directed to Naples, LOL.

But I feel you also addressed the post that got my dander up, which I appreciated.

You know the thing about all those power rankings? If we keep winning, they will keep dropping the teams we beat, eventually they will run out of room on the list and have to move me up.

Wow, you guys had whole dinners? Rich people problems. I had a can of green beans or peas for my one meal a day. Maybe…if I was feeling cocky….I’d make my own garlic toast with bread, some butter and garlic salt my mom gave me. 6 slices and I was good for a day or so.
