2018 Season – Game 2 – Dolphins @ Jets

1-0 baby!  The Dolphins started the season at home against the Titans, in one of the most bizarre and easily the most lengthy football games in the history of the sport.  7 hours, and 10 minutes.  Wow!  Lightning strikes in the vicinity of Hard Rock caused a couple of weather delays which put the total game time from start to finish at 7:10, which is the longest game in NFL history.

The good thing is that the Dolphins team remained focused on the task at hand, winning the game, and I would give some credit to Head Coach Adam Gase for keeping his team prepared, and to GM Chris Grier and VP Mike Tannenbaum for shedding the roster of the “ME” players and building a team of players who share a common goal, helping each other make the Dolphins a winning team.

The Dolphins had a nice balance on offense, Kenyan Drake getting the most touches as expected, and it was especially nice to see Frank Gore come in and spark the offense.  He looks fresh, especially for a veteran RB with 13 NFL seasons under his belt, and over 3200 carries.  I think it’s a great tandem, they complement each other very well.  The O-line did their job well, and both backs were able to move the ball.

Ryan Tannehill looked very good in the game, but a couple of poor throws somewhat derailed his fine effort.  I really thought the throw in the end zone to Gesicki, whether Mike slipped or not, was too flat, not enough arc, and also just thrown too close to the defender.  Make that throw more towards the sideline, and deeper towards the back of the endzone with more arc, and there’s very little chance if any that it gets picked off.  The other was either an overthrow or a miscommunication with Jakeem Grant, and without certainty as to which, I can’t blame Tannehill on that one.  The play-action TD pass to Kenny Stills was a beauty, great protection, and a very accurate strike for the TD.  Take away the end zone miscue to Gesicki or the other INT intended for Grant, and Tannehill has done exactly what I would hope he could do.

The Titans after the injury to starting QB Marcus Mariota were not the same team, but the injuries to starting OT’s Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin, LT and RT respectively is really what killed the Titans.  Those 2 are aggressive, mean and nasty run blockers, and the Dolphins limited the run game, especially when big back Derrick Henry was in, to 26 yards on 10 carries.  Dion Lewis, who is quicker and shiftier had more success, rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries.

On defense, the first thing I noticed right away, was Minkah Fitzpatrick.  He didn’t do one spectacular thing on Sunday, but damn if he wasn’t always around the ball.  You just can’t teach what he has, that desire to digest football knowledge, study film to learn players and teams tendencies, and the desire to work in the weight room to become the best player he can be.  Minkah had that before he got here, but he’s ours man, and I’m thrilled we have him.  He was in on 6 tackles, but despite that, he just seemed to be so involved in the game, and he was out there a lot. If anyone has snap counts, I’d love to know how many, as well as for the D-line.  The frequent rotation worked as well as I could have hoped, and the youngins Godchaux and Taylor look like all the world to have been brilliant draft picks.  You just don’t expect a 5th and 6th RD defensive tackle to give you what Godchaux and Taylor are giving us.  Think of how absurd it is to pay a player over $20M to do what these guys are giving us!  Talk about value, it’s insane!  The LB’s weren’t asked to do everything, as we saw 3 safeties out there often enough. Kiko led the team with 6 solo tackles, and both Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker had 3 solos and 3 assists.  Very possible this type of thing plays out the entire season.

The Jets come off a very successful road win against the Detroit Lions.  They banged up QB Matthew Stafford pretty good, and the battered QB threw 1 TD and 4 INT’s.  While Matthew Stafford hurt his team, the Jets rookie QB did the opposite.  Sam Darnold played a very solid game, despite throwing an INT on his very first pass attempt.  The rookie bounced back well however, and helped lead his team to an impressive 48-17 drubbing of the Lions. He had a nice balanced rushing attack with Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell with a 1-1A type approach.  Crowell finished with 102 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD’s and Powell had 12 carries for 60 yards.  Quincy Enunwa has resumed his spot as the go-to-guy of the offense, after being out with an injury last year.  Robbie Anderson remains the big play danger, he’s like our version of Kenny Stills, except of course Anderson threatens police officers with vulgar things he will do to their wives, but on the gridiron, they are similar threats.

Dolphins vs Jets are always crazy games, as last year’s Fest game was evidence of such.  The Dolphins pulled out a last minute victory when Bobby McCain intercepted Josh McCown with 47 seconds remaining in the game, allowing Cody Parkey to kick the game winning 39 yard F to win it 31-28.  What a FEST-ivious win!  There will not be a MetLife Takeover Fest this time, but hopefully the NYC Dolfans contingency will be sufficient to help our boys complete another successful takeover that ends with a Dolphins victory.

If the Dolphins can continue their success rushing the football with Drake and Gore, and keep the pocket clean for Tannehill, we should be able to score against the Jets.  Devante Parker should be back, but I just can’t count on him to be a big role player, so I won’t.  We have enough weapons with Stills, Amendola, Wilson and the 2 backs, and anything we can get from Gesicki and Parker is just gravy.  On defense, just limit Bilal Powell.  Crowell doesn’t scare me, but Powell just rips off those big plays, so we need to keep him in check.  Darnold probably won’t be shaken, we should treat him like any QB, not expose ourselves with a ton of blitzes.  I think if we do that, he might make us pay, so just stay disciplined, keep using the 3 safeties often, and I think we can beat them.  Don’t let Anderson get behind the secondary.

Anyone here watch the Jets/Lions MNF game? First of all, I had to argue with all the company I had at my house that one of the commentators was a woman (Beth Mowins), they all swore it was a guy (LMAO!) I personally, did not enjoy the broadcast, and I found her irritating for some reason. Not her content, just her voice. Anyone else here have a thought?

I was the opposite, I thought she sounded good. Refreshing really after already hearing Collinsworth twice so far (Thursday and Sunday). I thought Brian Griese did a good job too.

    MikeE,
I watched that game. I don’t know if it’s her voice or the voice she tries to use on TV but it just sounds fake. It almost sounds like she’s trying to make it more masculine. That said, I don’t mind your broadcasts. I think she does just as well as most of them. Brian Griese bugs the crap out of me though.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah man, it sounds fake, that’s definitely what I was thinking. Like she’s trying too hard to sound a certain way, nowhere near hear her normal speaking voice. I don’t know for sure that that’s the case, but it sounds forced.

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if we can just take away all the interceptions Tannehill throws? Unfortunately, we can’t and like it or not they are on him. The interception in the endzone was horrible and could have been a pivotal point in the game. You can’t have that. The other one was less egregious but still a turnover. Overall I thought Ryan played an okay game but he needs to stop throwing bad interceptions. He’s been doing it his whole career. Yes, take away those two interceptions and his stats are okay but with them he was inconsistent. This whole team needs to be more consistent and that starts with your QB not turning the ball over. Against a better team, things could have been different.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I wasn’t saying we take them away, I meant if he takes them away, doesn’t make those throws. I agree that throw in the endzone sucked, I said so in the article.

  4. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
That wasn’t in response to just your comments. I’m not gonna harp on the kid’s performance though. Overall, it was a decent performance from a guy who hasn’t played in almost a year and a half in less than optimal conditions. I expected some miscues. I just hope we keep running the ball!

but one of those runs were for big yardage, take that away the other 15 runs were minimal, defense was great against the run.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I see you have your own standards and rules set up there. I don’t look at it that way

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I know how many yards di he get…lets divide that by the carries so we can tell if out run defense sucks right?

The only problem with that is if he busts loose for 80 yards, then has 9 carries for 20 yards, he avg’d 10 yards per carry by your math, so we suck at run D!

by mine we were pretty good only giving up 1 long run and stuffing them the rest of the way.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Um, any run over 10 yards doesn’t count toward the average, you know this! Come on MikeE!

I thought it was great that the coach gave the guys off on Monday and Tannehill said to them, “I think we need to put in the time to correct the mistakes we made today, I think we should all show up for work tomorrow” and they all did!

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – You’re making up things I didn’t say. First of all, every play counts, so if you give up a 50 yard run, that’s not good even you hold the RB to 3 yards a carry every other run. I said Lewis had more success, that doesn’t translate to our run defense sucked. I didn’t say that.

  21. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I realize that it’s hard to comprehend filtering stats trying to see if a RB is a good btwn the takles RB. after all the other RB he was compared to had the same set of filters.

maybe he has improved but last year he sucked, like i said earlier 2 carries for a total of 90 yards plus 18 carries carries for 1 yard each makes him great in some opinions around here but not mine

  22. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think there are specific times when an interception is not on the QB. A good example is the wide receiver catches the ball but does not make a “football move” and has the ball stripped out of his arms and taken away from him. It can’t be a fumble because the WR didn’t officially possess the ball, but it is absolutely the WR fault that the ball was stripped away from him. (it would be a strip / fumble if he made a football move first)

another example would be if a WR falls down on a timing route after the QB releases the ball. That is on the WR.

That being said, both T-hills picks Sunday were his fault IMO.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

regardless of old sayings it’s impossible for the first example to the QB’s fault, although because of the “football move” rule, it would be listed as an Int rather than a fumble.

  23. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

There’s an old saying, once a QB releases the ball no matter the circumstances it’s his fault. the saying goes, throwing a football is like writing a check, the QB owns it.

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

There are lots of times where a receiver saves his QB from throwing an INT by making a great catch on a terrible throw or knocking the ball down so a defender can’t catch it. Things go both ways. INTs are a QB stat. They may not always be his fault, but they are his stat. Just the way it is. I hope Tanny keeps taking chances by giving his guys a chance to make a play, but it has to be a calculated risk. INTs like the one in the end zone just simply can’t happen. That’s a really bad TO that took points off the board. The other one is a little more palatable because he was throwing it up for his guy to make a play. I can live with a TO like that every now and then….but not the end zone one. Those are the ones he has to work on.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      agreed

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No question, that’s why the INT is attributed to the QB. Still, that doesn’t mean every INT is the QB’s fault.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt the 2 INTs weren’t what we wanted, but man did I love that deep throw to Stills. It was perfect. Two years ago we were wondering if Tanny can throw the bomb…..he at least had that one in him.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Statistically, he’s been very effective with the deep throw his last few seasons played, but for some reason the narrative doesn’t change that he can’t throw deep.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“INTs like the one in the end zone just simply can’t happen. That’s a really bad TO that took points off the board.”

Since wins and losses are a quarterback stat…..I guess you can say that Tannehill has been a perfect QB so far this year. (IT CANNOT BE ARGUED AGAINST!) he is a perfect 1-0.

  28. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I thought our run D was dominant in the 1st half, but not nearly as good in the 2nd. Whether it was Titans adjustments or the delays, the 2nd half run D was a bit concerning. Especially when you take into account the 2nd big run that got called back.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I am going strictly from memory, but I remember being concerned we were giving up bigger runs and more consistent 3+ yd runs in the second half.

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tannehill only had “deep ball problems” with Mike Wallace. He had no problem with getting the deep ball to Hartline or Bess or Mathews. The deep ball problem was a Mike Wallace problem not a Ryan Tannehill problem.

Randy, Tannehill has never been a high INT guy. They happen and all QBs throw INTs. Yes the one in the endzone was bad. That one he can’t make again. Gotta throw that ball where only Gesicki can get it.

Ryan’s issues have always been he has to lead the team into the endzone more, but INTs have never been a big problem.

    Hypothetical…

A RB on an opposing team runs against us 25 times. 24 of those times, we shut him down for ZERO gain. The 1 other time, we allowed him to rush for a TD from 25 yards out. Stat sheet: 25 rushes, 25 yards, 1.0 YPC, 1 TD.

    Final score… Them 7, Phins 0.

Fact: our rushing Defense cost us the game on that 1 mere run.
Point: ya can’t throw out that 1 mere run, as it was the difference in the outcome of the game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. I think what ORob was saying is that for the most part the run D was playing well as opposed to being run on all day. All big plays count. The goal of every team is to make big plays. The job on defense is to not allow too many of them.

Tannehill is good for 12 to 15 interceptions a year. My point wasn’t about how many he throws but that he does have a history of throwing interceptions that take points off the board. He needs to clean that up. Those are the type of interceptions quarterbacks just can’t throw. Some interceptions are worse than others.

I’m just going by his first 5 seasons – 13, 17, 12, 12, 12. Of course taking points off the board is not good. Just saying he’s never been a high INT guy. 108 career TD passes to 68 INT is not bad. That’s 40+.

In before someone suggests we showcase Parker to trade for a guard

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’ll be the first to say we should have traded Landry and a 4th RD to CLE for Joel Bitonio. lol

      • D's avatar D says:

Bitonio was one of the players i really had hoped we would select his draft year. I had my eye on a few OL from that draft. I wanted to take two early, and i had James as our OT, and Gabe Jackson as my dream pair, but i also liked Trai Turner as a backup plan for Jackson, with Halapio and Zack Fulton as deeper round selections. I had James as the OT selection, with Bitonio or Kouandjio as backup selections and Pamphile as deeper round alternative.

    • D's avatar D says:

Problem is we couldnt get a team to part with a starting caliber player at one of the hardest positions to find starting quality at, for Parker, and he is worth more than a backup quality player, which id hope we wouldnt be so desperate we would make that kind of trade. Parker shouldn’t be traded unless it for a quality level draft pick in next years draft, or for a starting caliber player at another position.

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

after watching the stinkin Jets Monday, I was concerned about our Oline with Sitton. Now I am really concerned.

    • D's avatar D says:

If the offense is working as it should and Tanny is getting the ball out quick, it should be a big hit to us. I mean its going to affect the game plan im sure, but if we cant handle this kind of occurance, we arent ready for playoffs anyways. This shit happens to most teams every year. The good ones bounce back from it and continue to win.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

quickest in the league through one game.

      • D's avatar D says:

So, again, if we are using tempo and we are getting the ball out quick, it reall minimizes an OL injury. Its going to hurt our chances for more 75 yard bombs to Stills, so we’d have to scheme to use Wilson a bit more with quick hitters and do more get the ball out and let their speed do the rest, but its doable.

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I didn’t realize we were paying Sitton that much! HOLY SHIT

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/josh-sitton-3748/

He has a 2M dead cap hit next season.

He get’s 6.5M for one game this year.

    Not bad for HIM.

  74. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We should have drafted at least some developmental player on O-line this year. First time in franchise history we didn’t take at least one Olinemen in the draft. Damn, now we are in the FA chase again or starting a rookie next season.

    • D's avatar D says:

Even if we are in the FA chase, dont expect that we will blow our load on one, so you dont have to worry about it. Gase’s philosophy towards OG’s and it seems FA in general is going to be value over star potential. I believe OG is the most crucial posiion these days with the way DT’s have morphed in their use, but it doesnt mean that he isnt right. You can scheme away from a brutal DT, so i think we will be fine.

  75. D's avatar D says:

IMO we have to try to promote a starter, ie Larsen and then pick up a backup that’s capable of starting as soon as he learns the system because im nervous about Larsen holding up too. Id be looking to bring in a guy like Evans or Joeckel, maybe even Zane BEadles. There is also Orlando Franklin, who was a solid starter at one point but seems to have slipped a lot in past couple of years.

  81. D's avatar D says:

Its funny how some of the patterns of players drafted, or available for draft, etc affects other things.

So you can see back in the day with Lawrence Taylor, he single-handedly affected the LT position and what people looked for out of players at that position. He also affected the DE position and OLB as people tried to get their own LT’s. He changed the QB position and offensive scheming to start the path towards getting the ball out quicker. He affected the rules of the game to start making the QB almost untouchable (though thats been a longer progression of rul changes, so its been furthered by others).

As i said this changed what LT’s teams were looking for, and because teams started finding their own sack specialist DE’s they looked to find other sack specialist DE’s to put on the opposite side as they realized offenses were doubling down on the one LT, scheming to take them out of the picture. Getting second DE sack specialists make RT as important as LT so people starter drafting RT’s int he first as well, now its OG’s because of DT’s like Donald and Suh. So now teams are just scheming to eliminate the who DL threat all together by doing quick passing route, up-tempo offenses to wear those guys out, running games meant to make their agressive attack on the QB backfire, etc.

Basically what im saying there is a yin for every yang, and that’s why having a good coach helps the entire thing because if he loses a guy that helps them do this, now he can do that to compensate. This is why Belichick seems to be unaffected when he loses key players or trades them to clevlan in the middle of the season despite them being statictically one of the best players on defense. This is why he still winds without Gronkowski or Brady. I think Gase is working his way towards being one of those guys for us, eh seems to be carrying himself with a lot more confidence this year and i think this is a test to see how ready he is to deal with adversity. If we roll on, thats going to be a hella good look for us for the future. I hate we lost Sitton, but we gotta be able to deal with this kind of stuff.

Now we know why we signed Swanson again. The team likely knew Sitton was going to miss time but didn’t know yet that it would be for the year. My guess is Swanson likely takes Larsen’s role and Larsen starts at LG.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase just confirmed this. He said they’re not going outside for any G help. Basically Swanson already was the guy from the outside.

Yeah, in Pass Pro, but I’m more worried about run blocking. Sitton as opening some good holes in the run game.

For this game i doubt we do much true inside running. Id do most the running off tackle, sweeps, etc, maybe some inside counters if they are aggressive with their persuits. I definitely wouldn’t run into the teeth of that defense much. Got to do it some, despite success, just to set up other stuff, but i hope dont just keep throwing people into a wall all day.

    From the Jets Wire writer…
    Dolphins/Jets prediction this weekend?

The Jets are going to win another one in convincing fashion, and homefield advantage is going to be a big reason why. Expect MetLife Stadium to be a madhouse this Sunday, as Jets fans finally have a team and a quarterback they can believe in. New York won’t put 48 points on the board again, but I don’t see Miami hanging around too long.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m sure it will be pretty raucous. Jets fans have been waiting for this for a long time. Doesn’t mean they’re going to win, but the place should be packed, and loud, at least as long as the Jets are in it.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Expect MetLIfe Stadium to be a house full of mad fans that file out mid-way through the third quarter. Home field advantage? Pfft! Means nothing when it comes to the Yets.
