2018 Season – Game 2 – Dolphins @ Jets

1-0 baby!  The Dolphins started the season at home against the Titans, in one of the most bizarre and easily the most lengthy football games in the history of the sport.  7 hours, and 10 minutes.  Wow!  Lightning strikes in the vicinity of Hard Rock caused a couple of weather delays which put the total game time from start to finish at 7:10, which is the longest game in NFL history.

The good thing is that the Dolphins team remained focused on the task at hand, winning the game, and I would give some credit to Head Coach Adam Gase for keeping his team prepared, and to GM Chris Grier and VP Mike Tannenbaum for shedding the roster of the “ME” players and building a team of players who share a common goal, helping each other make the Dolphins a winning team.

The Dolphins had a nice balance on offense, Kenyan Drake getting the most touches as expected, and it was especially nice to see Frank Gore come in and spark the offense.  He looks fresh, especially for a veteran RB with 13 NFL seasons under his belt, and over 3200 carries.  I think it’s a great tandem, they complement each other very well.  The O-line did their job well, and both backs were able to move the ball.

Ryan Tannehill looked very good in the game, but a couple of poor throws somewhat derailed his fine effort.  I really thought the throw in the end zone to Gesicki, whether Mike slipped or not, was too flat, not enough arc, and also just thrown too close to the defender.  Make that throw more towards the sideline, and deeper towards the back of the endzone with more arc, and there’s very little chance if any that it gets picked off.  The other was either an overthrow or a miscommunication with Jakeem Grant, and without certainty as to which, I can’t blame Tannehill on that one.  The play-action TD pass to Kenny Stills was a beauty, great protection, and a very accurate strike for the TD.  Take away the end zone miscue to Gesicki or the other INT intended for Grant, and Tannehill has done exactly what I would hope he could do.

The Titans after the injury to starting QB Marcus Mariota were not the same team, but the injuries to starting OT’s Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin, LT and RT respectively is really what killed the Titans.  Those 2 are aggressive, mean and nasty run blockers, and the Dolphins limited the run game, especially when big back Derrick Henry was in, to 26 yards on 10 carries.  Dion Lewis, who is quicker and shiftier had more success, rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries.

On defense, the first thing I noticed right away, was Minkah Fitzpatrick.  He didn’t do one spectacular thing on Sunday, but damn if he wasn’t always around the ball.  You just can’t teach what he has, that desire to digest football knowledge, study film to learn players and teams tendencies, and the desire to work in the weight room to become the best player he can be.  Minkah had that before he got here, but he’s ours man, and I’m thrilled we have him.  He was in on 6 tackles, but despite that, he just seemed to be so involved in the game, and he was out there a lot. If anyone has snap counts, I’d love to know how many, as well as for the D-line.  The frequent rotation worked as well as I could have hoped, and the youngins Godchaux and Taylor look like all the world to have been brilliant draft picks.  You just don’t expect a 5th and 6th RD defensive tackle to give you what Godchaux and Taylor are giving us.  Think of how absurd it is to pay a player over $20M to do what these guys are giving us!  Talk about value, it’s insane!  The LB’s weren’t asked to do everything, as we saw 3 safeties out there often enough. Kiko led the team with 6 solo tackles, and both Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker had 3 solos and 3 assists.  Very possible this type of thing plays out the entire season.

The Jets come off a very successful road win against the Detroit Lions.  They banged up QB Matthew Stafford pretty good, and the battered QB threw 1 TD and 4 INT’s.  While Matthew Stafford hurt his team, the Jets rookie QB did the opposite.  Sam Darnold played a very solid game, despite throwing an INT on his very first pass attempt.  The rookie bounced back well however, and helped lead his team to an impressive 48-17 drubbing of the Lions. He had a nice balanced rushing attack with Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell with a 1-1A type approach.  Crowell finished with 102 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD’s and Powell had 12 carries for 60 yards.  Quincy Enunwa has resumed his spot as the go-to-guy of the offense, after being out with an injury last year.  Robbie Anderson remains the big play danger, he’s like our version of Kenny Stills, except of course Anderson threatens police officers with vulgar things he will do to their wives, but on the gridiron, they are similar threats.

Dolphins vs Jets are always crazy games, as last year’s Fest game was evidence of such.  The Dolphins pulled out a last minute victory when Bobby McCain intercepted Josh McCown with 47 seconds remaining in the game, allowing Cody Parkey to kick the game winning 39 yard F to win it 31-28.  What a FEST-ivious win!  There will not be a MetLife Takeover Fest this time, but hopefully the NYC Dolfans contingency will be sufficient to help our boys complete another successful takeover that ends with a Dolphins victory.

If the Dolphins can continue their success rushing the football with Drake and Gore, and keep the pocket clean for Tannehill, we should be able to score against the Jets.  Devante Parker should be back, but I just can’t count on him to be a big role player, so I won’t.  We have enough weapons with Stills, Amendola, Wilson and the 2 backs, and anything we can get from Gesicki and Parker is just gravy.  On defense, just limit Bilal Powell.  Crowell doesn’t scare me, but Powell just rips off those big plays, so we need to keep him in check.  Darnold probably won’t be shaken, we should treat him like any QB, not expose ourselves with a ton of blitzes.  I think if we do that, he might make us pay, so just stay disciplined, keep using the 3 safeties often, and I think we can beat them.  Don’t let Anderson get behind the secondary.

Sad… and yes probably a great white. They thrive up there due to the seal population – the great white’s favorite food. There are lots of videos of fisherman…
    ————–
Yessir, that blue shark you speak of would have FREAKED me out as well, seeing it hung upside down with teeth showing… “not too faw off the shaw” where you were swimming. WOW!

“Jaws” still keeps me fearful of swimming too far out at the beach… yet once I’m in it, I go out further than I thought I would. You know… at least up to my ankles. JK/LOL

I got shoulder-deep in Virginia last month, and then I saw what I assumed to be a feeding frenzy of dolphins about 75-100 yards out (seagulls were dive-bombing, to boot). I very quickly moved back to shore (my nephew and me), knowing that predatory action was taking place… didn’t want to be a part of that action should it get closer.

I’ve a VERY healthy respect for ocean life, and ESPECIALLY sharks (fear/love/mystery). We needn’t poach (sharks, for example) that which we don’t understand.

SUCKS that a human died today (time to find preventive measures), but let’s not kill sharks due to this. I’m with YOU, bud… AND with the late Peter Benchley, who tried to preserve sharks.

Let’s go 15 years later my friends and I are down at LBI boogie boarding. I’m out about 40 yards and my friend who’s a gamer is out about 60 and we’re looking for waves. A pod of 2 dozen dolphins show up chasing blues into the surf and we’re like how cool is this. Then I see the big triangle fin following them. I point to my friend much further out and as usual he’s like I got it all calm. I wave to him I’m headed in because I know what that fin is.

Well we both get back in and the lifeguards call everyone out of the water because 6-8 foot dolphins are slamming the surf feasting on blues – they do that cornering fish where they want them. It was a great sight. But there was a big shark and I believe a great white following them. The food chain live in action.

  7. I was marlin fishing offshore FT Lauderdale during the game, listening to the endless delays on the radio of lightning. However I couldn’t help but notice the seas were flat as hell, and no rain or lightning was observed as far as the eye could see inland. I am thinking the NFL was too paranoid of liability, in a place where Shula once told a tall player , Don’t stand next to me when it’s lightning, You are too tall, lol

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Hey, I can GUARANTEE ya that we’ve got exactly 0% interest in Josh Gordon, man! I’m not even suggesting as much.

Allow the Brownies to trade him for a conditional pick next year, and then they still have to go for either Dez Bryant, or somebody else in a different trade! 😉

  11. I started a new hobby, making custom Blue Marlin lures and teasers. I was inspired because of studying Marlin and available choices of lures, I wasn’t happy , none did what I wanted.
So I designed a custom inline teaser rig with Mahi colors, with a 15 inch trailing Mahi color Predadator tube skirt lure. Took Me $63 bucks and a afternoon and I water tested it Sunday In Lauderdale. With a 5 line trolling spread, 4 store bought lures or baits, along with My Custom Made lure.
Within 10 minutes of trolling 460 foot weedline, the boat rocked, and made a loud noise, I thought I hit a log, but the big marlin , 500 plus had My lure and was jumping like nuts, the most excitement I’ve had in awhile, lol. I didn’t get an official catch because I didn’t touch the leader, instead the line parted after 45 minutes of incredible action.
I am now making more lures, and talking to a few bait stores to judge interest, couple said No, but 2 said Yes they wanted Me to make a few.

  12. I did get hits on the other lines, and caught some King Mackeral and a Mahi, but it was such a great feeling that the first and best fish went for My custom lure!
The problem with existing lures and teasers is they are used separately, tease the marlin up with one rig, and hope he turns and hits one of Your side baits, lol. It does work sometimes, but,
I figured Make an inline teaser, with a trailing bait, this means the Marlin gets teased up, and You have something for him to bite right there, and don’t have to hope he finds something else.
It also uses a fishes own instinct against him, they love to eat when the food is eating, the spread looks like a large Mahi feeding on smaller ones. Marlin feed on Mahi, so it all made sense to Me, and I can’t wait to do more water testing, lol

INDEED! And being sharks are generally solitary hunters (yet not always), they DO like to trail dolphins and be the ‘clean-up’ hitter. I know that if I see a pod of dolphins in their feeding-frenzies, there is likely a shark(s) very close by… I wasn’t taking ANY kind of chance.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Bro! I’d have shat my pants what with your experience, to be sure!!!

  15. What’s shakin Tim, what did You guys think about the marathon opener, was the NFL overly cautious?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Public safety is paramount. I can’t get on them about that.

      • Fair answer, I just didn’t witness any bad weather that day, an occasional cloud here or there which is normal. I wasn’t at the stadium, so it’s possible Maybe they were slightly out of My reach of sight from the Lauderdale coast, and had a freak occurrence. It just seemed weird hours of delays when I was at the hurricane Jeanne game against the Steelers, when the weather was dangerous.
We got drenched by very heavy rain for the first three quarters, with high winds, and lightning, and watched the Teams struggle with the elements.
The start of the game was delayed, a Sun 1 pm game got changed to 8 pm, but the game was never delayed even though we were getting hammered by outer bands of hurricane Jeanne.

M13, with the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during WWII it was mostly oceanic white tip sharks that feasted on those unfortunate sailors out at sea. Those sharks gathered in the hundreds with almost 1,000 sailors in the water. It was a buffet that none of us would ever want to deal with. I’m sure other sharks showed up, but they were the dominant species. They normally range from 5-7 feet but in numbers it’s like massive piranhas.

This was the story Quint told in the movie Jaws.

  19. Glad to hear You guys talk of not killing sharks , they are a natural part of the marine environment, and they don’t come onshore to bite us, lol
Any wild animal could hurt You, many have claws and teeth. Best to respect em from a safe distance IMO.
WHat I find disturbing, is floating plastic in the ocean. I stop and pick it up because someone has too, it’s usually those helium balloons you see in grocery or gift stores bobbing in the waves. I never used to see so much plastic , I can fill a half garbage bag in a few hours fishing, SMH

What I listened to him say is that all white Americans are immigrants. America is a nation of immigrants and he did not see massive immigration as a problem today unlike Europe.
    -_————————_————————_————————
All Americans are immigrants. Not just “white” Americans. Our so called “native” Americans took the land from others, who took it from yet others. That’s the way it is. And America’s immigration issue is not as bad as Europe’s, yet.

  21. Prettty much all of Us have ancestors that came to the US at one time from somewhere else. I met a couple of Maria survivors today, and they were very nice, offering me drinks and sandwiches, lol
PR is amUS territory, but I thought Wow, these people went through a washing machine hell, and they are offering me stuff and being overly nice even though they lost most of their personal belongings.
Good people come in all shapes sizes and colors, and these were definitely cool people with tragic stories to tell about friend and family that didn’t fare as well.

  22. I’ve hooked a couple sharks that were so large, they couldn’t be stopped or turned to gain any line on them. When a shark is over 12 foot long, You pretty much have to target him with appropriate shark gear, and follow him until he tires to have a chance to bring him up boatside.
I don’t really want to catch a big shark, I prefer they break off, that’s what normally happens.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our neighbors caught a 5 foot brown shark a couple of weeks ago and it was him and his wife and she had no experience gaffing a fish like that. They are all muscle. If you’re not prepared for big sharks cut the line. LOL

      • I wouldn’t gaff a shark because I don’t kill something unless it’s dinner for Me, lol. Shark taste like shit

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The rule up here is if they don’t stink of ammonia (urine) they are good eating. That shark was eaten. I didn’t have any but a few years back she made shark bites deep fried fillets and it was really good.

      • of course some folks around here enjoy shark, but the ammonia and urine thing is a real gastronomic turnoff, lol. Which are good or not, I’m not sure, just know the couple times I tried shark were ammonia city, and haven’t tried it again.

  23. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Some species of shark have a urinary track, while others excrete waste through their muscle and skin. If you’re eating shark and it taste like ammonia, you’re eating the later, which is the wrong kind of shark for eating. The former taste like swordfish. Not a big fan of swordfish myself.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I mean. We know how to determine good or bad. However I can do without it. I don’t have to eat shark or other big fish filled with mercury.

NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS in today’s Dolphins @ Jets game, this game most likely will be best remembered for one thing: Frank Gore becoming the #4 running back, in terms of yards gained rushing, in NFL HISTORY!! He needs only 15 yards today to pass Curtis Martin for the #4 spot, behind #1 Emmitt Smith, #2 Walter Payton and #3 Barry Sanders!! WOW!!
    —————–
NONE of the soon-to-be Top 4 yard gainers in NFL history would have blown away today’s NFL scouts (with the possible exception of Sanders.)
NONE of them had 4.4 speed.
Coming out of college, NONE of them were regarded as outstanding receivers, although all of them eventually proved they COULD catch the ball!
Back at “the U,” Frank Gore was discovered to have a learning disability. Yet, with the help of tutors (and his OWN special brand of determination) Frank Gore graduated and went on to have a truly amazing professional career that will put him in the Hall of Fame!
IN FACT, all of these Top 4 backs had something you could not measure with a stop watch:They all had the heart of a lion and an unbelievable desire to excel!
    —————
Coming out of Mississippi Valley State, Jerry Rice reportedly ran a 4.67 40 yard dash. Be he, too, had the attributes of the Top 4 running backs. NOW, he is almost universally regarded as the greatest receiver of all time. He had the heart of a lion and an unbelievable desire to excel. And HE DID EXCEL!!
    —————
Give us MORE OF THESE GUYS!!!
    —————
As for today’s Fins-Jets game, my intense dislike of the Jets franchise has blinded me to whatever factors might lead to a New York victory. I STILL REMEMBER those brutal 8 consecutive losses to the Jets from 1966 through 1969, the first 8 times these two franchises played each other. And I STILL remember the way Jets fans treated us. One game “found their franchise quarterback”

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phish, yeah I saw Rodgers is starting but I’m not starting him. MIN has a good defense and I don’t see this game being high scoring. I like JImmy G and the 49ers at home against DET much better. But who knows what’s going to happen. LOL

    Go Phins!!!

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Sorta thinking Darnold is gonna get a whole lot of different looks today. Hoping it is a “is that guy gonna try to smack me or get an INT” education plan.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our defense needs to get after him early and often and don’t let him get comfortable. On offense we need a fast start to prevent the Jets and the home crowd from getting early momentum.

      Go Phins!!!!

  79. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I don’t know why, but I am worried they will be able to run on us today

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In the category of what stats dont tell, Mahomes last week threw 4 TD passes, but 2 of them were tossed in the backfield to WRs coming around right in front of him, and I believe the other 2 were long runs by receivers after the catch. CBS is making a big deal of it.
