2018 Season – Game 3 – Raiders @ Dolphins

2 and oh!  No misprint here, The Dolphins are 2-0.  They went into NJ to visit the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium, and came away with an impressive victory.  The Jets had thoroughly dismantled the Detroit Lions in Detroit the previous week, 48-17, and they looked pretty damn good doing it too. Don’t let anyone take away or diminish this victory.  The Dolphins were far from flawless, but this unit looks so much more like a T-E-A-M than it has in some time.  I know, it’s easy to say that after 2 wins, and there’s some truth to that, how they respond to adversity will be key as well, but at the moment, there don’t seem to be any “ME!” players.

The team is listening to Adam Gase, and they definitely seem to be more disciplined.  The Dolphins fumbled 3 times in the game, Tannehill had 2, and more on that . . .   The strip sack where Tannehill fumbled, I am now positive that he DID NOT SEE Jamal Adams beat Mike Gesicki and he was just casually rolling out when Adams got by Gesicki for the sack.  I know some have said Tannehill looks slower, lost a step or two, but I don’t really see that.  What I think Tannehill has lost is some of his cutting ability, but his straight-line speed is there.  It’s also possible he improves in this area as he gets more comfortable and trusts his knee more and more in time.

2 Penalties in the game.  Discipline.  I couldn’t be happier with the production of that D-line.  If you think I miss Suh or Godchaux following Suh’s lead jumping offsides, I freaking don’t!  If you think I miss Jarvis Landry and his patented first down gestures (I do a little bit) I don’t miss the LOOK AT ME stuff.  It’s still early in the season, but after 2 games, Adam Gase seems to have shaped the roster with his guys, and it seems to be working.  Good on him.

We were all worried about the defense, the D-line, the LB’s, and the CB’s too, because Cordrea Tankersley seems to have regressed this season, and was inactive.  So far, it’s all working.  The D-line in particular sans Suh has been better than advertised, make that much better!  Talk about T-E-A-M, this unit personifies this.  Everyone is in the action and contributing.  Godchaux (6 TKL, 3 AST), Phillips (1 TAK, 1 AST, 1 SACK), Spence (4 TKL, 3 AST), Taylor (5 TKL, 2 AST),  Hayes (2 TKL, 1 SACK).  We’ve only registered 3 sacks, and 2 of them are by the DT’s, Robert Quinn has the other.  Safe to say if this DL play continues, Suh will not be tweeting in this direction in ’18, unless maybe to say I’m sorry, and I was wrong.

Back to the CB’s.  We haven’t played a team that is deep with WR talent.  The Titans have Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis, and Matthews is still hurting.  The Jets have Quincy Enunwa and Robbie Anderson, along with Terrelle Pryor, and then Jermaine Kearse who just returned from injury.  Neither WR group is impressive, so our CB’s haven’t been truly tested yet.  That changes a bit when da Raiders come to town.  Amari Cooper had a down year last season, but he’s started much faster this season, and he already has 11 receptions.  Jordy Nelson is a big talented veteran receiver and Martavis Bryant who came over from the Steelers is another bigger receiver who is a big play threat with great speed.  The Raiders also have TE Jared Cook who has started off very fast this season, so our secondary may play a huge role in this game.  That, and the pass rush.  We have to get to Derek Carr and make him uncomfortable.  He’s been uncomfortable most of the time, and that’s why he’s struggling, but if he’s allowed to sit back there, he will make us pay.

In the secondary, it will be interesting to see if Cordrea Tankersley is active, I think he’ll have to be.  Minkah’s snap count will probably increase as well, especially if we limit Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin in the run game.  If we force them to pass, there will be plenty of 3, 4 and maybe even 5 receiver sets.  Jared Cook is a dangerous receiver who has given us trouble before when he was with the Titans, and then also with the Rams.  Our secondary may be tested, and once again, if the run defense does it’s job, we’ll need more pass rush from Quinn, Wake, Harris and Hayes, as well as the DT’s.

The Raiders are scoring only 16 PPG, and have given up 26.5 PPG.  Small sample of course, but they have struggled so far.  You can almost flip the stats for our Dolphins, scoring 23.5 PPG and allowing only 16.  If we can keep that up against the Raiders, we should be 3-0, but . . .   The Raiders are desperate after plunking down the $100M contract for Head Coach Jon Gruden, and they will be desperate for a win, and also consider all the people who do the power rankings, how much it must be killing them for the Dolphins to be anywhere past #17 in the NFL.

I think we continue what we’ve been doing on offense, the combo of Drake and Gore has been effective, Gore really bailed us out on that 3rd and 19 play.  Neither back has topped the 100 YD mark, but the sharing is working.  I would imagine Devante Parker will see his first action this Sunday, as reports stated he was OK to play last week against the Jets.  We’ve spread the ball around so well, I wouldn’t expect Parker in the lineup changing that much at all.  I’d like to see Gesicki and Derby get more involved in the pass game, especially Gesicki, but we may have to be patient in that regard.  I think once Tannehill develops that trust that is so essential, and they understand each other, and learn what each other wants and can do, I think that Gesicki will start getting more passes thrown his way.

I don’t think the Dolphins front office has ignored the OL!

We’ve drafted plenty and picked up more in FA.

I think the talent scouts have screwed the pooch!!!!!!!!!!
And the old injury bug has bit us in the ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn’t we clean house in the draft scouting department last year??? I don’t remember?

Smash the raiders !!! Nice write Mike E.. I’m on vacation and getting ready to head down the coast for 3 days .. Staying on the beach 😎

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write up, Mike! This team is buying into Gase’s vision and as long as each player works hard and does his job we should have a good season.

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Guess what guys!? The miami dolphins have a top 10 QB. To those who said we would not / could not win without a top ten guy, well we have him.

    # 5 in completion percentage
    # 8 in passer rating
    #10 in touch downs thrown
    #12 in average per pass
    # 7 in passes over 40 yards (tied with Big Rape)

Now he needs to keep on track and allow the rest of the team to win games.

Phins will surely be wearing their white unis forcing the Raiders to wear their black….less than ideal for a 1:00 game in the SFla sun. Combine that with the west coast-east coast travel/time difference, and the Raiders may be struggling late in the game.

NO DOUBT! You know what my favorite thing so far is? The businesslike way the players are carrying out their assignments. First down? Yeah, that’s what I was supposed to do, now HUSTLE back to the huddle or line and go again.

He was the 11th player in the draft

One of the most pivotal players on a championship Alabama team

One of the highest rated prospects through the ‘17 season

That’s the team’s record with Tannehill and Gase in our last 10 games. Yes this is a new season, but it is a real stat. People throw out stats like this all the time for other players.
    ———————————————-
Yeah i know it happens, im just not a fan of isolating a statistic for whatever your purposes are, especially if they are season+ removed from relevant. Its like saying they’ve done studies, you know. 60% of the time he wins every time. You could have also said the 10 before that he was 3-7. You could also say he’s 9-5 with Gase as his HC see pretty much any way ya want to dress something up you can.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Last 10 games together is all it means. They were starting to roll 7-1 before Tannehill went down and now that he’s back they’re 2-0. Pundits like to point out the Colts record with and without Luck and other stuff. It’s just a positive stat for us when the national media doesn’t have much good to say about us or Tannehill.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As far as PFF goes here’s my issue with them. It’s fine if they decide a player graded out well in a game. Whatever! But to then grade a position in some kind of order loses its value to me for this reason.

Let’s say a couple of guards get a poor grade because they went up against the Rams with Donald and Suh.. That’s a tough matchup. While two other guards went up against a team with inferior DT talent and graded out well. How do you come up with an equal grading order? The only real accurate way to do that would be to have the same guys compete against the same guys and see how they faired.

It’s kind of like how college football is. You have a team that mostly plays inferior competition and goes 10-1 while another team that is clearly better and proved that by beating the 10-1 team played a lot more good teams but finished 7-4. It’s not an equal grading system.

    ————————————————-
Well that will never happen so we wont ever know.

  35. D's avatar D says:

According to what i have heard, the PFF scoring comes from what they determine ws supposed to happen on that play and if it does and its done well it get positive marks and if not it get negative marks and the total score comes from the accumulation of positive marks and negative marks across every snap. Its a flawed system because it doesn’t take into account what the play call really was, but what they thought the assignment was. Its at best a subjective system that should only put you in the ballpark of how that player played that game. Im not sure it even puts you in the ballpark to be honest, but again, that’s why im saying thats the best you can hope for.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right but it’s like comparing one guy who knocked down a dead birch tree to another who knocked down a healthy oak tree. LOL

    • D's avatar D says:

IMO the only real judge of good vs bad is the coach, since he knew what plays were called, what the assignment was, etc. Problem is you arent going to get a coach to break down each players performance to you for every game, every snap, you are going to get roundabout answers like “i thought he held up pretty well” which you then have to decipher by tusing a Gase to english translator. I think faith rules in situations like these because you will know if a player is doing well enough to keep his spot or if a move is needed by what the coaches do, as long as you have faith in the coaches to do their jobs.

  36. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I have this sneaking suspicion that Gase is doing just enough to win. Somewhat like in pre-season. Do damage early and then cruise. OK The Titans game was so weird, but still.

In the jests game with a 3 TD lead and only a half to play, why show off lots of great plays? Burn the clock, play D, and save your skill players and your playbook for later games. It’s a long year.

It worked. I feel sure that we could’ve scored on that last drive if we needed the points to win. Even if just a FG. No need to get Amendola banged up. No need to show off Gesicki in the EZ.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It worked out that way but the entire team knows they left plays out there that could have and should have been made. Every team says that though. The Jets had some of them too. Herndon killed them a couple of times.

But that’s sports, make plays vs. don’t plays and somebody wins. Except for some games like Browns/Steelers and Packers/Vikings. LOL

Ryan Fitpatrick has played some statistically incredible football these first two week. 78.7% completion rate, over 400 yards per game at more than 13 yards per completion, 8 TD’s and 1 Int and a nearly perfect 151.5 rating. more than half of his passes are for first down and 13.1% of his passes are for TD’s. INCREDIBLE. I am glad he is tearing up the NFC now.

Gase’s plan is coming together nicely. The getting rid of the bad apples was real and it shows. With the Raiders you have a dysfunctional team, it should be to our advantage, not to mention the travel, 10am, and SEPTEMBER in Miami. Like the start of the jets game everything seems to be pointing at 3-0.

That’s the team’s record with Tannehill and Gase in our last 10 games. Yes this is a new season, but it is a real stat. People throw out stats like this all the time for other players.
    _______________________________________

If that’s the case why don’t you reflect on all the games they had together instead of cherry picking to support your agenda?

Tannehill has not played that well in his past 2 games IMO, I hope he can get better.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I guess you missed my post to Randy that it’s a real stat but a homer stat and meant to annoy Tanny haters. There is no agenda it’s just that the last 10 games Tannehill has played with Gase as HC they are 9-1.

  44. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I’m not discounting the Raiders’ talent, but they do seem dysfunctional. Obviously there are some on the team that are not buying into Gruden. And some have/will not forgive him for trading Mack (or is it MAACK?). Kind of like when Gase dumped Ajayi, then had to dump a few more t get the locker room right.

  45. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

ORob – Tannehill certainly had some bad plays in both games (turnovers), but to say he didn’t play well is a stretch. What would constitute a good game in your eyes?

  46. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

So far Tannehill has a 104.9 passer rating which is great

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Tannehill has not played that well in his past 2 games IMO,”…. so confused. If you are looking for Marino, Brady or Rodgers….. Tanny not your QB. Could be real efficient though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

His QB rating was 102.7 during that 7-1 stretch in 2016 so I guess it’s living up to what you said all offseason about passer ratings equals wins. That and running the ball. 🙂

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

why include the 30-6 loss against the Ravens? he was fantastic in the half of game he played against the cards, he went 1-0 in that half game! if you include the 2 games this year he’s a whopping 2.5-0!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To be fair and not just cherry pick the good games.

Tannehill got hurt in the 4th qtr of that ARZ game up 21-9. When Moore came in we went 3 and out three straight times as ARZ mounted their comeback and we had to win it with a FG at the end 26-23. Matt Moore didn’t win that game for us, he almost blew it.

  47. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I really don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing his limited yardage, The Jets QB threw for more than 300+ yards and lost.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Yeah, sometimes yardage isn’t a gerat measuring stick. The turnovers definitely need to go. I think he is playing well, but he can do even better. But as long as he is finding open receivers and completing passes for positive yards and the team is winning, he’s playing well.

  48. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It just seems he’s still be holding the ball way to long oblivious to his surroundings.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I thought he held the ball too long on a few plays too. Hopefully, that’s just him needing to get back into the groove – catching up with the speed of the game – after a long time away.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sometimes that’s nobody is open and still hanging in there. He’s not the only QB who does that. Aaron Rodgers does that too.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Yes, Rodgers hates to give up on a play. But he’s elusive like no one else.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t think he’s oblivious. I think he just always feel he can make a play. I would like to see him just throw it away sometimes rather than take a bad sack.

There were 2 or 3 times against the Jest I was yelling at him in frustration to just THROW IT AWAY, lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll take that over a QB who bails at the first sense of pressure. Russell Wilson gets sacked a ton and he’s very mobile. He’s been sacked 12 times already. But he’s a gamer.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Me too. I’m a big Tannehill fan…homer even…but sometimes he, like all QB, holds onto the ball too long.

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought the play where he lost his grip on the ball before he was going to throw it away, he should have thrown it away earlier. The strip sack by Jamal Adams, Tanny just never saw Adams get free. He did step up nicely on the low throw to Gore for the 19 yard first down pickup

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Aaron Rodgers has the most overall talent at the QB position in the game today and one of the best of all time. It’s scary, he’s physically more gifted than Joe Montana but mobile like him and has Marino’s arm.

    • D's avatar D says:

He’s like Elway a lot. Marino is extremely unique, there arent and wont be many QB that are all around as good as him. I think Brees is the closest thing to Marino that plays right now, but he doesnt have as good of an arm. Their accuracy though is incredible. Philip Rivers is a little Marino like, and even though his deliver is crazy, his release is super quick with the ball like Marino’s was. Almost looks like they flick the ball instead of throwing it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Elway had a super strong arm but I think Rodgers is a better pure passer similar to Marino than Elway was.

  51. D's avatar D says:

Big passing yardage usually means you have an unbalanced offense(ie a QB carried team), your defense sucks and you are in shoot outs all the time (the way new Orleans usually is) or you play from behind alot which could mean all those yards still equals a shitty WL record. I’m not worried about his yardage I just want him to lead us to wins as part of a winning team. Don’t cost us games and help us out when we need you to step up. It would be very nice to have a QB capable of putting up 300+ yards a game to go along with good contribution from others but not a lot have that so we need to roll with what we got for now. It could be much worse.

  52. D's avatar D says:

Kinda BS thatthey are letting Bryant play despite failing yet another substance abuse violation. He is supposed to be getting his second suspended indefinitely penalty but they are letting him play until his appeal plays out which they arent getting to anytime soon. To me that’s sorta BS, they havent handled other players like that so its almost like they are doing a solid for Gruden now that he has come back to coaching. The last part is conjecture, i know its probably not that, but i dont understand why the NFL is acting differently for Bryant.

  53. D's avatar D says:

Tanny tries to wait out the play way too long, and yeah i know sometimes Rogers does, but Rogers is still aware of whats goin on around him and that strip by Adams would likely have not happened to Rogers, and one of the other sacks where Tanny was damn near at the sideline and took the sack instead of throwing it away, he would have thrown that one away. What Tanny does cant be misconstrued as not giving up on a play prematurely, its dangerous for the drive and for him. He needs to get better at that shit or he is going to get hurt again.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve seen all the top QBs take sacks that we would crucify Tannehill for but we focus more on him and our team. The bottom line is getting the team in the endzone more and winning more games. That moves us on from harping on ugly plays. They all have them. That’s my take anyway.

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not perfect but the Jets do provide a lot of inside pressure, but they also still lack a conventional outside pass rush.

Mike, the play where the ball comes out of Tannehill’s hand is a lot faster in review than we saw it live. He was trying to get rid of it and he lost control of the ball. Shit happens! We tend to harp on our team’s plays more so than when we are watching other teams play. Plays like this happen. Just don’t make it a habit.

This is a good roundup of what we like to do in the passing game. Yes we do need to hit on some more down the field passes but you can see some of those short passes going for big plays in the future with our speed. Let’s get the TEs more involved. Parker also changes how teams play us.

Yeah after further review I realized Tannehill had no idea Adams was chasing him. The thing about that play was we had Adams blocked for a second or two, but again nobody seemed to be open and RT was rolling out on the opposite side of the field. That play was kind of long and Ryan thought he had more time. Part of being a QB is having faith in your protection. It’s easy for us to sit back and say he should have done this or that. But when QBs start throwing it away too often you’re giving up on plays. That’s part of cleaning it up – pass pro being better, guys getting open quicker and getting the ball out faster. They all go hand in hand. It’s easy to harp on the result and the focus of the play. But what else was going on?

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL

  56. D's avatar D says:

Here is kinda what im saying. From your video on the first sack.

Tanny sees Adams creeping up to the line on the blitz. Ball is snapped. Gesicki is pulling to pick pick up a block as part of the play design. Tanny looks that way and then looks back to the right. 2 seconds have already passed. Gesicki loses his block. Tanny sees it and starts to move but still staring down the receiver. 3 seconds have passed and he pretty close to outside the tackle box. He has a RB in his field of view as his check down who is open. By 4 seconds Adams has a head of steam but Tanny could still get away but he is just starting to scramble away (and yes he looks slower) He should have been scrambling earlier if he wanted to buy more time. He is running with the ball by 4.5-5 seconds in and he doesnt secure it so he fumbles and luckily we get it back.

Thats just bad on Tanny imo. The protection didnt break down, i mean Gesicki might could have held the block a little longer but the guy is supposed to be blocking impaired so you know he isnt holding up forever. Whats worse is he Adams break free of the block, he didnt sneak up on him. So Tanny had like 3 options he could have done but he needed to make a damn decision and do it and not hold on so long. IMO he should have scrambled as soon as he saw Adams break free and let the receivers work their way back to him and he could have run and drawn the LB’s and safeties up and then if he has to slide, he probably makes it back to the LOS at least, he is in control of the ball better because he made his decision and then if he gets close to the LOS and one of the receiver have worked their way open, he throws it.

Thats what Rogers would have done, because i have seen him do just that plenty of times. You can think on the run, you dont have to stand still and wait for a play to open up and yeah once you are outside of that tackle box, you need to be able to pull the trigger on the last option which is give the friggin fans a souvenir.

Again, im not trying to be hyper critical of Tanny, but i also feel like what im seeing him doing was wrong on a few plays and i do feel if he is going to really grow as a QB, he needs to do better in those areas. He has played pretty well and i think there were maybe 3 plays i really had issues with him on, but thats it, and there were a lot more than 3 plays he was involved in.

    • D's avatar D says:

He saw Adams break free i mean to say above.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay if you see it that way. Not sure he saw that far to the left of him. He seemed to look more up field and thought we had him picked up pre-snap. To me that’s on protection. That should not happen. Again it’s about trust in your pass pro. I guarantee you the coaches focused on the block. It’s not like when a DB has a straight line to the QB and nobody blocked him. We had it picked up. That’s poor blocking.

Sure could have thrown it away or attempted a pass? Yes! But football is never perfect.

That’s what I mean when we critique our team and plays way more then we do with other teams when this sort of thing happens.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t think he saw Adams break free. His head is turned slightly that direction, but I think he was picking up the inside rush of 99, not Adams.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s funny, but I think this play as one of the few that isn’t entirely on Tanny. Tanny sees Gesicki picking up the rusher and thinks he has time to be ahead of him. If Gesicki held his block for more than negative 1 second he wouldn’t have been sacked. But he trusted in his blocker to give him a smidge of time. I feel this one falls into trying to do too much category, because like you said, he could have hit the checkdown instead of looking for a bigger play.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s rolling to the opposite side of that blitz that we initially picked up. Give Adams who is a very good player some credit too. But who was the check down? I would think if a guy was open the ball would out.

This is one of those situations if we made that play on defense we’re all high fiving each other about our defense, not the opponent’s screw up. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Gore comes out of the backfield into the flat right in front of Tanny. he could have thrown it there, but Tanny thought Adams was picked up, so he thought he had a split second more.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Isn’t it cool that we’re 2-0 but we can critique our players at the same time? LOL

As for the game against the Raiders this weekend, I think the key is pressuring Carr and our secondary being solid. I think we should score plenty on their defense.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think it is cool…when we can do it objectively instead of with agenda. It’s not like we’re a perfect team. I bet the players don’t go through the week talking about how perfect they are and patting each other on the back, lol. They probably look at everything they can do better.

As for Las Vegas. I completely agree. It’s all about getting to Carr and not getting torched in the passing game. They are going to make some throws and move the ball. Red zone defense and turnovers may be the difference in this game.

The reason we used the plays we did was because of the way the Jets played us. They also have a good secondary.

On the other hand, if you win the TOs, make big plays at the right time, you’ll find yourself winning more times than not.

We had 2 fluke TOs, where the ball slips out of the hands of center and QB, otherwise pretty really good job of taking care of the ball.

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We had a short field on our TDs last week, couple that with a 20 pt lead and you get out gained, more common than not.

Sure we left a lot of plays on the field, but still won by 8 and the jets never had the ball within 1 score. When you can play like that and still win the way we did it means you dont have to play your best to beat a good team on the road. That’s usually an indication of a good football team.

I’ll take this team 100% over the team that made the playoffs in 2016, even before all the injuries. Ryan is a better QB than he was in 2016, with the exception of the AZ game.

Gase said that’s the game things slowed down for him. That’s what I see this year, a continuation of that.

And I’m not trying to sound picky or snobby we are 2-0 but I’m speaking to scoring more points. Our defense played great and it shouldn’t have even been close st all. OD, I saw your post how Miami didn’t send any scouts to watch Mack play in college but the Raiders did. Mack was a top 5 pick in 2014, everyone knew who Mack was in that draft. The Raiders selected him at #5 in that draft. He wasn’t some kind of gem that only they knew about.

PHELON: QUESTION for you below your 6:57 post.
    ————–
Hey TIM: At 9:23 this morning you seemed to imply that I indicated “He (Khalil Mack) wasn’t some kind of gem that only they (the Raiders) knew about.”
Actually, Tim, that’s not even close to what I said.
Here, in fact, is what I DID SAY:
    1) I watched Mack dominate FAU when Mack’s U. of Buffalo team upset FAU in Boca Raton.
    2) The Dolphins did NOT have a scout at that game as was their policy at the time.
    3) The Raiders DID have a scout at that game who gave extremely high marks about Mack.
And you were right when you said Mack was a top 5 talent by the time draft say took place (about 7-8 months after the BUFFALO @ FAU game).

The SAD PART is that Miami’s management didn’t think enough of Mack or this game to send one of their scouts only 30 miles up I-95 to evaluate the talent. Indeed, the fact that Mack was a top talent supports my long held belief that Miami’s “DOOFUS BRIGADE” has kept this franchise from being even better because of decisions like this. This same policy led the Fins NOT to consider either T.Y. Hilton or Alfred Morris both of whom played within 30 miles of Ireland’s office and were scooped up by the Colts and Redskins, respectively. Instead of harvesting local talent, Ross’s boys were too busy making humongous mistakes by using multiple picks on the likes of Jordan and Carroo and a certain running back who proved to be a bust. Mistakes like these are symptomatic of a scouting department that is not performing well enough to produce a legitimate Super Bowl contender. And, in fact, in year #10 of the Steve Ross Era, Miami is not now, and never has been, a legitimate Super Bowl contender, as their 65-81 record over the past 9 years under Ross proves.

So, please. Tim, go right ahead and rip me all you want for what I actually say. I consider disagreeing with you to be a major plus, not a minus.

While some may continually praise Ross’s leadership group (A.K.A. the “DOOFUS BRIGADE”), I will continue to hold out for an owner who can MAKE THE DOLPHINS GREAT AGAIN!. And 65-81 isn’t my idea of GREAT AGAIN!!

LOL, Out problem isn’t the fourth quarter, that is another fallacy that can be disproved by, you know, statistics. Our problem is the first three drives of the game in the first quarter. We need to start scoring on THOSE drives, not the fourth quarter drives. It’s like we always spot them a drive.

My son tutored her best friend in math so was over at their apt a lot when Nick was there. But Nick and my son were not friends.

My dad knew both Fat Jack and Arnold Palmer (professionally), but much preferred Arnold who was much more personable and just really a great guy. Nicklaus was more aloof. Palmer was a quote machine and treated the working press as colleagues moreso than Nicklaus, who was not a bad guy, just way more intense I guess you would say. I met them both at the Masters, but I was just a kid who got a nod from Nicklaus and a handshake from Arnold, I also got a smile from Palmer, but not Nicklaus, and Palmer told my dad, “fine young man.” even though I am sure he said that about all the many sons of sports writers he encountered along the way. Palmer had really really strong yet really soft hands.

Celebrities have always fascinated me. Some are very aloof and some are very real.

Don Shula was like Palmer, and his 3 seconds of kindness to me in a parking lot helped make me a lifetime Dolphins fan. The Raiders have two sacks this season. Khalil Mack has a sack, a forced fumble and a pick-six while generally being a nuisance in two games for the Bears. We mention this because after both of Oakland’s losses, the man responsible for shipping Mack out of town, first-year coach Jon Gruden, has complained that he needs pass rushers. You don’t say.

The Raiders’ offense has been pleasantly surprising, if not for entire games at least for long stretches. Unfortunately, the team is 0-2 after a 20-point home loss to the Rams and a squandered 20-19 loss to the Broncos. And with the Dolphins playing some inspired football, things might get worse for Gruden before they get better. We half-joked before the season that Oakland could flirt with 0-16 and if they lose to Miami, their best chance for a win may come next week against the Browns. Woo boy.

    Pick: Dolphins 27, Raiders 23

sorry to be redundant MF, but jeez why not learn from a guy with 5 rings?
The high percentage passing attack and then when the defense gets sick of giving up 7-10 yard completions every other play and they creep up … boom hit the deep ball.
Use the RBs in the passing routes and it’s like trying to cover a swarm of hornets.
Along with a committee rushing attack and a hurry up offense and the D is always on its heels.

I think what you’ve been saying is now coming true for us. Yes… Adam Gase is the new sheriff of the AFC East, having studied Belicheat* (again, without the cheating).

even to the point of poaching guys off up-coming opponents for some inside dope.
Man what if we start becoming a playoff team every year for a while? like the next decade. Gase is the gym rat type of “player’s” coach that could do that, become a Reid or Tomlin if not a bellicheat level genius.

Did you see that once again Gase put on those attack dog forearm pads and challenged the receivers to get free from chucks at the LoS?
I hear Ballage knocked the piss out of coach but most guys cranked it down a notch while still showing they learned what was being taught.

That is great rapport building by using fun while also ramping up the competitive intensity.
