2018 Season – Game 3 – Raiders @ Dolphins

2 and oh!  No misprint here, The Dolphins are 2-0.  They went into NJ to visit the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium, and came away with an impressive victory.  The Jets had thoroughly dismantled the Detroit Lions in Detroit the previous week, 48-17, and they looked pretty damn good doing it too. Don’t let anyone take away or diminish this victory.  The Dolphins were far from flawless, but this unit looks so much more like a T-E-A-M than it has in some time.  I know, it’s easy to say that after 2 wins, and there’s some truth to that, how they respond to adversity will be key as well, but at the moment, there don’t seem to be any “ME!” players.

The team is listening to Adam Gase, and they definitely seem to be more disciplined.  The Dolphins fumbled 3 times in the game, Tannehill had 2, and more on that . . .   The strip sack where Tannehill fumbled, I am now positive that he DID NOT SEE Jamal Adams beat Mike Gesicki and he was just casually rolling out when Adams got by Gesicki for the sack.  I know some have said Tannehill looks slower, lost a step or two, but I don’t really see that.  What I think Tannehill has lost is some of his cutting ability, but his straight-line speed is there.  It’s also possible he improves in this area as he gets more comfortable and trusts his knee more and more in time.

2 Penalties in the game.  Discipline.  I couldn’t be happier with the production of that D-line.  If you think I miss Suh or Godchaux following Suh’s lead jumping offsides, I freaking don’t!  If you think I miss Jarvis Landry and his patented first down gestures (I do a little bit) I don’t miss the LOOK AT ME stuff.  It’s still early in the season, but after 2 games, Adam Gase seems to have shaped the roster with his guys, and it seems to be working.  Good on him.

We were all worried about the defense, the D-line, the LB’s, and the CB’s too, because Cordrea Tankersley seems to have regressed this season, and was inactive.  So far, it’s all working.  The D-line in particular sans Suh has been better than advertised, make that much better!  Talk about T-E-A-M, this unit personifies this.  Everyone is in the action and contributing.  Godchaux (6 TKL, 3 AST), Phillips (1 TAK, 1 AST, 1 SACK), Spence (4 TKL, 3 AST), Taylor (5 TKL, 2 AST),  Hayes (2 TKL, 1 SACK).  We’ve only registered 3 sacks, and 2 of them are by the DT’s, Robert Quinn has the other.  Safe to say if this DL play continues, Suh will not be tweeting in this direction in ’18, unless maybe to say I’m sorry, and I was wrong.

Back to the CB’s.  We haven’t played a team that is deep with WR talent.  The Titans have Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis, and Matthews is still hurting.  The Jets have Quincy Enunwa and Robbie Anderson, along with Terrelle Pryor, and then Jermaine Kearse who just returned from injury.  Neither WR group is impressive, so our CB’s haven’t been truly tested yet.  That changes a bit when da Raiders come to town.  Amari Cooper had a down year last season, but he’s started much faster this season, and he already has 11 receptions.  Jordy Nelson is a big talented veteran receiver and Martavis Bryant who came over from the Steelers is another bigger receiver who is a big play threat with great speed.  The Raiders also have TE Jared Cook who has started off very fast this season, so our secondary may play a huge role in this game.  That, and the pass rush.  We have to get to Derek Carr and make him uncomfortable.  He’s been uncomfortable most of the time, and that’s why he’s struggling, but if he’s allowed to sit back there, he will make us pay.

In the secondary, it will be interesting to see if Cordrea Tankersley is active, I think he’ll have to be.  Minkah’s snap count will probably increase as well, especially if we limit Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin in the run game.  If we force them to pass, there will be plenty of 3, 4 and maybe even 5 receiver sets.  Jared Cook is a dangerous receiver who has given us trouble before when he was with the Titans, and then also with the Rams.  Our secondary may be tested, and once again, if the run defense does it’s job, we’ll need more pass rush from Quinn, Wake, Harris and Hayes, as well as the DT’s.

The Raiders are scoring only 16 PPG, and have given up 26.5 PPG.  Small sample of course, but they have struggled so far.  You can almost flip the stats for our Dolphins, scoring 23.5 PPG and allowing only 16.  If we can keep that up against the Raiders, we should be 3-0, but . . .   The Raiders are desperate after plunking down the $100M contract for Head Coach Jon Gruden, and they will be desperate for a win, and also consider all the people who do the power rankings, how much it must be killing them for the Dolphins to be anywhere past #17 in the NFL.

I think we continue what we’ve been doing on offense, the combo of Drake and Gore has been effective, Gore really bailed us out on that 3rd and 19 play.  Neither back has topped the 100 YD mark, but the sharing is working.  I would imagine Devante Parker will see his first action this Sunday, as reports stated he was OK to play last week against the Jets.  We’ve spread the ball around so well, I wouldn’t expect Parker in the lineup changing that much at all.  I’d like to see Gesicki and Derby get more involved in the pass game, especially Gesicki, but we may have to be patient in that regard.  I think once Tannehill develops that trust that is so essential, and they understand each other, and learn what each other wants and can do, I think that Gesicki will start getting more passes thrown his way.

Gase definitely gets better as the game goes calling plays. It might be intentional, he might be sacrificing plays to set up things for second half but if that is the case I really wish he try a game where he doesn’t do that it would definitely help my blood pressure

  2. D's avatar D says:

I think he gave up on the run a little too early this game. I know it wasn’t really working but he also didn’t put much effort to getting it going

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

They were behind. Tough to commit to something that isn’t working when you’re behind.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We were behind a mere 3 points before we abandoned the run.

      • D's avatar D says:

You can still attempt it just to keep them honest, I just think he still had plenty of time to work on it when he bailed out. Obviously we came back and won so they figured out how to do it without running, but I don’t think we can do that many games and expect positive results.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The reason the run didn’t work it bc the passing game didn’t stretch the field

We needed to open it up to win this game

If they would have been running the offense we were running when we were trailing – we probably would have run well too

  3. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Regardless of our varying opinions on individual players, that was a team win.

    • D's avatar D says:

It was a good win on a lot of levels I agree with that. I’m not looking at it as a bad game I just think some of the play calls especially early weren’t great. That double reverse pass was an amazing call though. Beautiful play and execution

  4. Team win, no doubt. Those are the best kind!

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The running game was not effective today and we lost the TOP battle. But we won the game. Move on. When the Pats have done this for over a decade nobody cares. Just win the game.

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

While I don’t think we played all that well, it is definitely nice to see this team finally winning these ugly games for a change. Build on it and get better. The schedule gets tougher now. Keep working.

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    We scored 28 points.
    all on offense
with no rushing game to speak of
    no FGs attempted
    low TOP

    This is great.
We said we want to average 25 ppg.
    We are.

It’s the key number in my mind. 25+ with our defense is most often a win. Just score baby
      Just win baby!!!

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wait now. Last week went up 20-0.
So we are not in a trend either way.
The lightning game was so weird it doesn’t count (except we won, smile)

So maybe it is more that Gase is taking what they give him and playing a great chess match.

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think we won because we won the turnover battle, we also stuffed them on a goal line stance which is equal to a turnover. that was the difference.

  10. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We won because we scored more points than the other team. When we do that we win every time.

  11. I loved the double reverse Wilson TD toss to Grant, lol what a great play call and execution!

  12. Grant is explosive and evasive in the open field. A real nightmare for defenders to be able to overcome Grants speed, AND Moves.

  13. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Carr gets all the hype about being one of the better QB’s but Tannehill outplayed him today. Just looks better. Carr throws a lot balls that I just scratched my head at. Why? I mean thank you damn wtf was that

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The next step will be to use those reverses and trick plays to set up other plays off the fake. Teams will adjust to those looks….and be more disciplined against them. We need to set up other plays off those looks. Maybe a throw down the seam for a TD to Gesicki!?

So why beat your head against the wall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m all for passing 5-12 yards a play down the field if that’s what we can do!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – It really hurt us losing Spence and Hayes. We weren’t doing that great against that big O-line and Marshawn with them, but it really hurt us to lose them. Our guys were just gasses trying to hang in there and then try to bring down Marshawn. Other than this game with 2 guys out, you have to admit the D-line has been playing much better than we could have expected.

  22. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I felt like the Raiders were over-confident, especially after the easy Nelson TD and after they began stuffing our run.
    Gruden and Carr especially.
Then again maybe it was just me from listening to the biased announcers.

  26. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Maybe Randy but I’m not so sure this defense wouldn’t have come up with a turnover in the run game too. These guys get to the ball and this team is making plays when they need to.

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Jordy Nelson came out on fire, i believe that missing Rashad Jones hurt us as well. he kept getting behind our D, where was Fitzpatrick on those plays??

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Update.
I just heard an announcer say that Miami is 3-0 “in the young season,” as if it’s not that big a deal this early.

Hey FF, we have only been given 3 to play. We could not possibly have more wins.

And i guarantee you a whole bunch of other teams wish THEY were 3-0.

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I questioned whether Tanny could put the deep ball on the right as much as anyone. The TD throw to Stills and the long one to Parker were close to perfect.

  31. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

That TD throw to Stills was crazy! how much room is there from the endline until he meets the wall? he could have gotten hurt hitting that wall they need to move it back.

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

OMFG!! ROB!! BIG PLAYS FROM THE RUNNING GAME DO TOO WIN GAMES!! THAT IS WHY THEY ARE BIG PLAYS! 3 yards and a cloud of dust does not win games….it kills games once you have already won.

    It wasn’t the backs, they…..

Yeah, the line looked over matched, but the Backs did them no favors. Head down and eyes closed into the back of the O-linemen in front of you isn’t how you gain yards.

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Todays game reminded me of the Monday Nighter against the Peyton Manning led Colts, where we dominated TOP and they dominated the big plays.

It also is why I hate stats. I hear things like you have to run the ball to setup the pass, and you need to gain so many yards on 1st down running, and you need to run to setup play action.

What I say is, if they try to take something away you had better be able to do the other. Today they took away the run and we were finally able to get it done through the air.

You do what they give instead of trying to put a round peg in a square hole.

These are the kind of posts that drive me nuts reading them. Every game is different. What does any game in the future have to do with playcalling or abandoning the run today? The Raiders weren’t getting to Ryan, so why would you keep trying to run when they kept stuffing it and the passing game was working?

Gase is finding safe ways to run the ball without actually handing it off to an RB. We saw last week Ryan running for a couple of key 1st downs on the game winning drive last week and this week it was the 2 flip passes for TDs.

You do what you have to to win, nothing else matters today. Next week at practice…

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

D was spot on with his post. I don’t know why that would drive you nuts.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Because The Raiders were crashing the line to stop the line. They were totally selling out. Why keep running it? Go to the pass, play action enough to keep them worried about the run. If they back off to defend the pass, go back to the run.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because a future game has nothing to do with today’s game. It’s like saying well if everyone did it…

Lol with you guys and your double reverse. It was a had off to the RB, pitch back to Wilson and a wr pass. I have a thing about what people call a double reverse. I dont remember ever seeing one. A double reverse is a handoff to a runner or the QB just running around the end, then a handoff to usually a WR, who runs to the other end and hands off to someone going in the other direction 😉

  52. D's avatar D says:

The two big gainers to Nelson was defensive scheme issues. Nelson set down right between three zones. He just found the spot and exploited it. That’s one of her s strengths. The second one was minkah in cover 1 and he had shaded to the right side probably because Howard was on the left. Nelson got behind Howard and because he was shaded to the right Move nkah would have had to picked up on needing to fall back over and help Howard and he is was slow reacting to it. Not completely a blown coverage just he didn’t recognize it right off.

This is a differant mix though, and I believe Wilson and Grant have a special chemistry going. Landry wouldn’t be losing games for us, he’s not doing that before, or in Cleveland now.

Weird week. Jax and Borttles were awesome against the Pats and then blow chunks against Tennessee. Bills crush the Vikings. Garopolo non contact injury

I mentioned before the season the 49ers were overrated, because all of their praise was coming on the heels of winning meaningless games at the end of last year. We know all about those kind of games.

What Pats fans think via the Boston Herald:

“AFC East teams haven’t put up much of a fight in the division with the Patriots in recent years. Bill Belichick’s team has won nine straight division titles, and while the Dolphins’ start is nice and may have a few people jumping on the bandwagon, let’s not get carried away.

They haven’t exactly played anyone you’d call a contender, as their wins have come over the Titans, Jets and Sunday the winless Raiders.”

Tonight’s game can really make the Fest game that much more important. After Det wins tonight, the like opponents tie break will fall on our side when we beat Det at the Fest.

Man, I am proud of our young DT’s down two guys and they kept at it and didn’t let the Raidah’s dictate to them.

Running the football is very important to the success of this team, One thing about history is it usually repeats itself. Teams that make the playoffs and go to the championship games usually are at the top of plays running the football, and those at the bottom are usually picking at the top of the draft or finish 6-10.

without the turnovers we lose this game due to a lack of an effective running game, i certainly hope it gets better in a week.

with that said the lack of running today may be a simple case of match-ups, i wasn’t sure if Oakland was overloading the box.

Garopolo’s injury happens before he was hit. He got leveled after he tore his ACL
