2018 Season – Game 3 – Raiders @ Dolphins

2 and oh!  No misprint here, The Dolphins are 2-0.  They went into NJ to visit the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium, and came away with an impressive victory.  The Jets had thoroughly dismantled the Detroit Lions in Detroit the previous week, 48-17, and they looked pretty damn good doing it too. Don’t let anyone take away or diminish this victory.  The Dolphins were far from flawless, but this unit looks so much more like a T-E-A-M than it has in some time.  I know, it’s easy to say that after 2 wins, and there’s some truth to that, how they respond to adversity will be key as well, but at the moment, there don’t seem to be any “ME!” players.

The team is listening to Adam Gase, and they definitely seem to be more disciplined.  The Dolphins fumbled 3 times in the game, Tannehill had 2, and more on that . . .   The strip sack where Tannehill fumbled, I am now positive that he DID NOT SEE Jamal Adams beat Mike Gesicki and he was just casually rolling out when Adams got by Gesicki for the sack.  I know some have said Tannehill looks slower, lost a step or two, but I don’t really see that.  What I think Tannehill has lost is some of his cutting ability, but his straight-line speed is there.  It’s also possible he improves in this area as he gets more comfortable and trusts his knee more and more in time.

2 Penalties in the game.  Discipline.  I couldn’t be happier with the production of that D-line.  If you think I miss Suh or Godchaux following Suh’s lead jumping offsides, I freaking don’t!  If you think I miss Jarvis Landry and his patented first down gestures (I do a little bit) I don’t miss the LOOK AT ME stuff.  It’s still early in the season, but after 2 games, Adam Gase seems to have shaped the roster with his guys, and it seems to be working.  Good on him.

We were all worried about the defense, the D-line, the LB’s, and the CB’s too, because Cordrea Tankersley seems to have regressed this season, and was inactive.  So far, it’s all working.  The D-line in particular sans Suh has been better than advertised, make that much better!  Talk about T-E-A-M, this unit personifies this.  Everyone is in the action and contributing.  Godchaux (6 TKL, 3 AST), Phillips (1 TAK, 1 AST, 1 SACK), Spence (4 TKL, 3 AST), Taylor (5 TKL, 2 AST),  Hayes (2 TKL, 1 SACK).  We’ve only registered 3 sacks, and 2 of them are by the DT’s, Robert Quinn has the other.  Safe to say if this DL play continues, Suh will not be tweeting in this direction in ’18, unless maybe to say I’m sorry, and I was wrong.

Back to the CB’s.  We haven’t played a team that is deep with WR talent.  The Titans have Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis, and Matthews is still hurting.  The Jets have Quincy Enunwa and Robbie Anderson, along with Terrelle Pryor, and then Jermaine Kearse who just returned from injury.  Neither WR group is impressive, so our CB’s haven’t been truly tested yet.  That changes a bit when da Raiders come to town.  Amari Cooper had a down year last season, but he’s started much faster this season, and he already has 11 receptions.  Jordy Nelson is a big talented veteran receiver and Martavis Bryant who came over from the Steelers is another bigger receiver who is a big play threat with great speed.  The Raiders also have TE Jared Cook who has started off very fast this season, so our secondary may play a huge role in this game.  That, and the pass rush.  We have to get to Derek Carr and make him uncomfortable.  He’s been uncomfortable most of the time, and that’s why he’s struggling, but if he’s allowed to sit back there, he will make us pay.

In the secondary, it will be interesting to see if Cordrea Tankersley is active, I think he’ll have to be.  Minkah’s snap count will probably increase as well, especially if we limit Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin in the run game.  If we force them to pass, there will be plenty of 3, 4 and maybe even 5 receiver sets.  Jared Cook is a dangerous receiver who has given us trouble before when he was with the Titans, and then also with the Rams.  Our secondary may be tested, and once again, if the run defense does it’s job, we’ll need more pass rush from Quinn, Wake, Harris and Hayes, as well as the DT’s.

The Raiders are scoring only 16 PPG, and have given up 26.5 PPG.  Small sample of course, but they have struggled so far.  You can almost flip the stats for our Dolphins, scoring 23.5 PPG and allowing only 16.  If we can keep that up against the Raiders, we should be 3-0, but . . .   The Raiders are desperate after plunking down the $100M contract for Head Coach Jon Gruden, and they will be desperate for a win, and also consider all the people who do the power rankings, how much it must be killing them for the Dolphins to be anywhere past #17 in the NFL.

I think we continue what we’ve been doing on offense, the combo of Drake and Gore has been effective, Gore really bailed us out on that 3rd and 19 play.  Neither back has topped the 100 YD mark, but the sharing is working.  I would imagine Devante Parker will see his first action this Sunday, as reports stated he was OK to play last week against the Jets.  We’ve spread the ball around so well, I wouldn’t expect Parker in the lineup changing that much at all.  I’d like to see Gesicki and Derby get more involved in the pass game, especially Gesicki, but we may have to be patient in that regard.  I think once Tannehill develops that trust that is so essential, and they understand each other, and learn what each other wants and can do, I think that Gesicki will start getting more passes thrown his way.

  2. I think We parrot JaX more than pats.
Jax drafted some top defensive players,
and have a running game to go with An excellent game manager QB.
Throw in some good coaching , clock management, and team play,,,

Let the antagonists get away with their BS? That’s all good. Just sit back and take it, and move on? Okay except they rear their heads time and time again.

  69. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Tanny has always caused sacks…..what’s new? I do think he’s improved, but he definitely looks less nimble now. I’m sure a brace slows you down. He’s still more mobile outside the pocket than a lot of QBs though. It’s inside the pocket he’s always struggled. He’s also had issues identifying edge blitzes too. It was nice to see him stepping up in the pocket more….and yes….it was also good to see an actual pocket too. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, sometimes stats do tell the story. Under Gase, Tannehill’s passing attempts have gone down but his comp pct., YPA and passer rating have gone up as well as wins. Sacks have also gone down obviously with less opportunities.

Like many here have said including me, with a more balanced offense he’s more efficient. Having him back in shotgun most of the time throwing 37-45 times PG has not been very successful. Some QBs can do that, that’s not his game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He stepped up nice on the 3rd and long play to Gore

  70. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are a few examples of top prospect pass rushers who start of slow impact wise and then boom!!! By the end of the season last year his stats weren’t anything special but he was flying around and creating pressure.

Like Burke said, he’s kind of a luxury to have waiting in the wings and getting some depth snaps. I really believe in Harris. Just keep working kid.

  71. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
In college, Tanny ran a lot. He was known as a guy who broke out of the pocket and ran too much. They talked about actually coaching him to stay in the pocket when he was drafted, but it is just not his natural proclivity. He prefers…and has always been best at….running outside the pocket. It’s why he can be really effective on RPOs. But, in the NFL, you have to make a lot more plays from inside the pocket. Just like any QB, he has strengths and weaknesses. I really believe they put him in shotgun a lot because it gives him more time to read the play. When you drop back, you get less time to survey the field. It’s why we see most teams run from the shotgun constantly. Pressure comes so fast in the NFL now…..and teams want to put 4 guys out on patterns which reduces your protection options. QBs don’t get 4 seconds to make a play anymore. Dropping back cuts into that time even more. It’s a different game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree with some of what you said here but not all of it. The majority of QBs are in shotgun these games, not just him. I actually think he’s better under center.

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It almost looked like Tanny had to jump a little or throw that pass to Gore from his toes. When you do that, you have a tendency to throw it low….plus he was throwing up over a dude. Gore did a great job of nabbing that ball. Tanny did a good job just getting it out there somewhere close to him. We need more big plays. I’ll take them any way they come.

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
That is what I said. Most QBs are in shotgun these days….not just Tanny. It’s also just part of more passing in the league. I don’t know if I think he’s better under center. How do you feel he’s better? In what way?

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

his QB rating is higher under center than in shotgun. More TD’s less Int’s. It’s been that way since his rookie year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        ^
You have more options under center. The conventional run game, play-action, bootlegs, roll-outs etc. More for the defense to think about. In shotgun, it’s RPO and the defense already has you in their sights 5 yards deep.

It still comes down to how the OL and blocking schemes execute. But I prefer under center for Ryan. I’m happy that Gase actually mixes it up. In previous years we were in shotgun a majority of the time with very little run/pass balance. The stats justify this.

  74. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    This is cool…

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Oh I see. I’m not sure if that tells the whole story, but I see what you’re saying. I think there are lots of factors that influence those sorts of statistics. I’m not sure being under center is the main or key contributor. I have always felt Tanny is better when he drops back because it’s more of an on schedule throw. Drop back, set your feet and throw. You don’t have time to drop back, sit there and survey the field too often. I like starting from under center because it opens up play action.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bingo! Just said that in a reply.

Not saying Ryan Tannehill is Joe Montana but under Bill Walsh Montana was never in shotgun keeping every play type open. Ryan has the same type of mobility in those play schemes. Use his strengths. He’s not Dan Marino or Peyton Manning as the pure pocket passer and everything goes through him. And as great as Montana was, neither was he.

FAU is about a 2 touchdown underdog to UCF. I think that’s just about right. I look for close to 100 points in tomorrow night’s contest unless it rains hard. And I’m expecting BOTH TEAMS to use TRICK PLAYS, and a wide-open approach to play calling. Lane Kiffin of FAU, in particular, is reported by the Palm Beach Post to have featured “some truly crazy plays” in practice this week. Both squads have Heisman Trophy candidates. UCF’s QB, McKenzie Milton, engineered last year’s PERFECT SEASON which culminated in a Peach Bowl win over AUBURN. FAU’s Heisman candidate, running back Devin (“MOTOR”) Singletary scored 33 touchdowns last season and also scored 5 TD’s in last week’s game IN THE FIRST HALF ALONE!!

THOSE of you liking “shoot-outs” should not be disappointed. I’ll say it will be 59-42, UCF over FAU. And DON’T take long bathroom breaks b/c you likely will miss a couple of scoring plays!

A 1-1-1 Browns team is better for us than a 2-1 Jets division rival. We don’t play the Browns this year but have another game against the Jets. The division is more important.

    Well isn’t this a conundrum????????????????

I can’t help but think that the world would implode if the Stej won this game!

  81. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

HOW IN HELL did the officials miss the pass interference in the end zone against the Jets’ Middleton???
THIS may be why the CFL allows replay on pass interference calls.

Wyo when the Rams beat the Raiders in week 1 it was a HUGE win, when we beat them in week 3 it will be because they suck. You can only play who’s in your schedule and hope your division loses.

  98. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

DuhArnald completed 3 passes for 22 yards, one for 16, with 20 of that coming after the catch…and they still had to suckle as his nuts a little. SMH

The 0-16 team can’t use the first phucking pick in the draft because they are sooo phucking good.
