2018 Season – Game 3 – Raiders @ Dolphins

2 and oh!  No misprint here, The Dolphins are 2-0.  They went into NJ to visit the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium, and came away with an impressive victory.  The Jets had thoroughly dismantled the Detroit Lions in Detroit the previous week, 48-17, and they looked pretty damn good doing it too. Don’t let anyone take away or diminish this victory.  The Dolphins were far from flawless, but this unit looks so much more like a T-E-A-M than it has in some time.  I know, it’s easy to say that after 2 wins, and there’s some truth to that, how they respond to adversity will be key as well, but at the moment, there don’t seem to be any “ME!” players.

The team is listening to Adam Gase, and they definitely seem to be more disciplined.  The Dolphins fumbled 3 times in the game, Tannehill had 2, and more on that . . .   The strip sack where Tannehill fumbled, I am now positive that he DID NOT SEE Jamal Adams beat Mike Gesicki and he was just casually rolling out when Adams got by Gesicki for the sack.  I know some have said Tannehill looks slower, lost a step or two, but I don’t really see that.  What I think Tannehill has lost is some of his cutting ability, but his straight-line speed is there.  It’s also possible he improves in this area as he gets more comfortable and trusts his knee more and more in time.

2 Penalties in the game.  Discipline.  I couldn’t be happier with the production of that D-line.  If you think I miss Suh or Godchaux following Suh’s lead jumping offsides, I freaking don’t!  If you think I miss Jarvis Landry and his patented first down gestures (I do a little bit) I don’t miss the LOOK AT ME stuff.  It’s still early in the season, but after 2 games, Adam Gase seems to have shaped the roster with his guys, and it seems to be working.  Good on him.

We were all worried about the defense, the D-line, the LB’s, and the CB’s too, because Cordrea Tankersley seems to have regressed this season, and was inactive.  So far, it’s all working.  The D-line in particular sans Suh has been better than advertised, make that much better!  Talk about T-E-A-M, this unit personifies this.  Everyone is in the action and contributing.  Godchaux (6 TKL, 3 AST), Phillips (1 TAK, 1 AST, 1 SACK), Spence (4 TKL, 3 AST), Taylor (5 TKL, 2 AST),  Hayes (2 TKL, 1 SACK).  We’ve only registered 3 sacks, and 2 of them are by the DT’s, Robert Quinn has the other.  Safe to say if this DL play continues, Suh will not be tweeting in this direction in ’18, unless maybe to say I’m sorry, and I was wrong.

Back to the CB’s.  We haven’t played a team that is deep with WR talent.  The Titans have Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis, and Matthews is still hurting.  The Jets have Quincy Enunwa and Robbie Anderson, along with Terrelle Pryor, and then Jermaine Kearse who just returned from injury.  Neither WR group is impressive, so our CB’s haven’t been truly tested yet.  That changes a bit when da Raiders come to town.  Amari Cooper had a down year last season, but he’s started much faster this season, and he already has 11 receptions.  Jordy Nelson is a big talented veteran receiver and Martavis Bryant who came over from the Steelers is another bigger receiver who is a big play threat with great speed.  The Raiders also have TE Jared Cook who has started off very fast this season, so our secondary may play a huge role in this game.  That, and the pass rush.  We have to get to Derek Carr and make him uncomfortable.  He’s been uncomfortable most of the time, and that’s why he’s struggling, but if he’s allowed to sit back there, he will make us pay.

In the secondary, it will be interesting to see if Cordrea Tankersley is active, I think he’ll have to be.  Minkah’s snap count will probably increase as well, especially if we limit Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin in the run game.  If we force them to pass, there will be plenty of 3, 4 and maybe even 5 receiver sets.  Jared Cook is a dangerous receiver who has given us trouble before when he was with the Titans, and then also with the Rams.  Our secondary may be tested, and once again, if the run defense does it’s job, we’ll need more pass rush from Quinn, Wake, Harris and Hayes, as well as the DT’s.

The Raiders are scoring only 16 PPG, and have given up 26.5 PPG.  Small sample of course, but they have struggled so far.  You can almost flip the stats for our Dolphins, scoring 23.5 PPG and allowing only 16.  If we can keep that up against the Raiders, we should be 3-0, but . . .   The Raiders are desperate after plunking down the $100M contract for Head Coach Jon Gruden, and they will be desperate for a win, and also consider all the people who do the power rankings, how much it must be killing them for the Dolphins to be anywhere past #17 in the NFL.

I think we continue what we’ve been doing on offense, the combo of Drake and Gore has been effective, Gore really bailed us out on that 3rd and 19 play.  Neither back has topped the 100 YD mark, but the sharing is working.  I would imagine Devante Parker will see his first action this Sunday, as reports stated he was OK to play last week against the Jets.  We’ve spread the ball around so well, I wouldn’t expect Parker in the lineup changing that much at all.  I’d like to see Gesicki and Derby get more involved in the pass game, especially Gesicki, but we may have to be patient in that regard.  I think once Tannehill develops that trust that is so essential, and they understand each other, and learn what each other wants and can do, I think that Gesicki will start getting more passes thrown his way.

This talk about who Tannehill is, how good he is, etc doesn’t interest me

Bring me the head of Derrick Carr this Sunday!

A balanced offense that can keep you in the game.
Defense is always a big part of winning in any sport.
STs being solid and don’t lose the game with a bad play.

That’s how I look at it.

    Damn Philly down 2-RB’s!

Cav, I m glad you said you are nervous about this game. I didn’t want to be the only one. Some on here are expecting us to blow them out and I just don’t see it that way. The Raiders lost their opener playing with a new coach against the #1 D in the NFL. Then they barely lost by 1 point to Denver at Mile High Stadium who is #13 in scoring D and also one of the 7 teams still at 2-0. The Raiders are 0-2 but both their opponents have very good scoring defenses and are a combined 4-0.
After the first 2 games against the Titans and Jets, we are only tied with 3 other teams for #14 in scoring offense. IMO, our scoring offense was average against average or slightly better than average scoring defenses (though the Jets were tied at #6 in scoring D after 2 games against the Lions and US). Our scoring D is ranked 4th, but, that is after playing basically 1 slightly above average scoring offense and 1 slightly below average scoring offense.
I think we are closer matched to the Raiders than some realize. They have a very talented receiving corps and accurate QB. Our keys to this game will be pounding the rock, winning TOP and putting up points (at least 24). Our D will need to constantly pressure Carr, keep them out of the endzone and not give up any big plays. He was only sacked once by the Rams and once by the Broncos, 2 top defenses. He has completed 58 of 72 passes (80%) for 601 yards after 2 games. He did have 3 picks against the Rams though.
Our D will need to keep playing at a top level, win the turnover battle (again) and our offense will need to step it up to win this game.
    …………..and that’s JMHO, LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

See my post at 1:58. The NFL is a competitive league. Sure some teams have better overall rosters or a great HC and QB and you expect them to win a lot, but most games are competitive.

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBM – I’m nervous too, and the fact that people are being so cavalier that we have this won already is kinda bugging me. Slow down a little. We played 2 games, I think we’ve left a bunch of points off the board, but we’ve made enough plays to stay ahead and win.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not really seeing that. If you’re going by the scores we’re picking I wouldn’t put too much into that. I don’t put much into the scores I pick because I have no idea so I try to just pick a positive score. I picked 31-17 and you picked 30-19. That doesn’t mean shit. LOL

In reality a team traveling across the country that isn’t very good against an opponent who’s playing pretty well should be an underdog. Then you have the heat of S. FLA at 1PM that they don’t experience in OAK as a factor and most likely wearing their black jerseys.

Now watch we wear our blue and say WTF is this all about?!!! LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You’re not seeing the “I’ll be disappointed if we’re not 3-0”, or “We should really be 3-0 after this weekend” stuff? I’m seeing a lot of it here.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

SB7 said he feels this is a game we should and need to win to take the next step. But I don’t see a bunch of people acting like this is a done deal, even him.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I haven’t seen anyone be cavalier about this game like we’ve already got it won already. Where are getting that from? Speaking only for myself, this is a game that we must win. You only have 16 games in a season and if you want to make the playoffs and get a good seed, you have the beat teams like the Raiders and split the games with the more quality teams in the league. IMO, This is a coin flip opponent that we need to win against.
I’ve spelled it out my reasoning in previous posts. The next few games after this aren’t favorable matchups so I feel we need to take a victory when the opportunity presents itself. I just don’t feel we can go into that stretch 2-1. If we’re not up to snuff we could end up going 2-4. We’ve got a west coast team at home who hasn’t put it together yet. Get the win now while we can.

  6. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

You need your defense to keep the other team from scoring points. You’re need your offense to score points. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. To win in this league you have to score more points than the other team.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Some caller on WFAN brought up something about the Raiders might be tanking which I don’t buy because they’re going to have two 1st rd picks the next two years as they get ready to move to Vegas. It made me think about our draft and realized we have every pick and two extra 7’s (Landry and Lucas).

We may not have a ton of cap but we have plenty of draft resources moving forward. Now many of you know I don’t think about the next draft this early during a season. But without specific prospects, what positions comes to mind with what you know about our team so far?

I think the trenches on both sides of the ball, QB competition, another explosive WR and better LB depth.

Just trying to switch up some of the same conversations we keep having. 🙂

  8. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Sweet Baby Jesus…my 8:16 post was a tongue in cheek dig at Randy and Son. It was meant to be any part of serious conversation.

As for losing to the Raiders, while I don’t expect it to happen, I would be very disappointed and concerned if it did. Disappointed because they are supposed to win home games against troubled teams, concerned because they would be the same old Dolphins.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear what you’re saying but the Raiders do have some talent and that oblong ball has a way of doing some crazy things regardless of how everyone plays. LOL

  9. D's avatar D says:

A w or L in this next game wont break the season but our seasonis much more managable if we do win and i dont mean that as a 3 is better than 2 type statement, just that winning a games that are 50/50 kind of matchups, is important to establishing yourself as a up and coming team. It establishes consistency and it moves you close to calling even matchups against the better teams 50/50’s. The Raiders game could be seen as a stepping stone game towards much better things in our future and i think it could be a game that really lets the wind out of our sails from a player perspective as a L

    • D's avatar D says:

SB7 i had something typed out almost identical to yours. I see good teams as teams that beat the teams they ar supposed to, win more than half the games that its 50/50 and take a game or two from quality teams. very good teams win all the easy ones convincingly, they take almost all the 50/50’s and they get about half from the quality guys. Extremely good teams are the quality teams everyone one else is looking to eventually beat to establish themselves and they win almost every game if they intend to keep that place.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I’ve heard callers calling into NFL radio too. It’s amazing, I never hear Dolphins callers, but in the last 2 days, I’ve heard 3. It seems to be the sentiment among some Dolphins fans that we should win this game, and anything else would be a bitter disappointment

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s no different than what I heard from Jets fans after their win over the Lions. A friend of mine on FB had a guy I don’t know posting that our next big test with be JAX in a few weeks looking right past MIA and CLE. I replied saying be careful about that or you might be 1-2 before you know it. Well look at what we have now, 1-2 and does anyone think the Jets are beating the Jags? Is it possible, yes, probable, no. LOL

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I bet you this baby’s parents think it is just adorable.

Randy’s opinion of Tannehill and the O-line are the same… 😉

    • D's avatar D says:

Shouldnt be, the coaches after watching the game film shouldn’t see those guys as a roll over. They should definitely get the idea that the Raiders arent going to roll over in this game.

  13. D's avatar D says:

I still think in the long run a guy like Allen winds up the best QB of this class, though whats going on with him over in Buffalo has the chance to ruin him.

Baker Mayfield though had really grown on me close to the end and i would have been really happy to have added him. I think though what happened last night was exactly why we didn’t make an aggressive move for either of them. Had we traded up for a QB (which we would have had to to get one of the guys we were rumored to have wanted) there would have been little tolerance for any problems Tanny encountered. There would have been boos and chants and we really didnt need that as a team, so in some ways despite seeing Mayfield play well, and despite the potential i still feel is there with Allen, im kind of glad the draft panned out like it did. Thats not something i would like to be dealing with.

The Browns are a good team to have to deal with that because, well there is no where to go but up for them, same for the Jets and Bills. For us, Gase in his third and probably most crucial year as our coach, with enough other stuff having changed, it would be depressing to also deal with that kind of crap.

I still want more from Tanny, but Falk as a developmental guy, and chance to draft a guy next year if we still find ourselves with need there, i am ok with how everything turned out.

  14. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Think big ugly and mean for the next draft!

    • D's avatar D says:

Meh, id think whatever the best player is. We are getting to the point to where this will be the case moving forward. Things change, but im hoping we dont really know what we want until we get to our pick and know whats the best still left out there.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed! After watching the first two weeks of the season and then last night, trench play is still key.

      • D's avatar D says:

OL looked pretty decent given having to adjust to Larsen instead of Sitton. It was a lot better than i had expected actually.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not saying we’re bad, talking about the future moving forward. Phillips will be a UFA next year, Spence is a solid vet not great player. Sitton, Larsen and even Kilgore won’t be around long term. Get quality young guys to develop under them for a year or two.

This has nothing to do with this year and next year. The best way to keep things going is to have players ready to step up on rookie contracts to replace guys who will move on. That’s all. I’m not saying we’re weak and bad, I said what areas do you think we need more talent moving forward?

  15. D's avatar D says:

Sam Darnold had a kid this week too.

  16. D's avatar D says:

I am not seeing realy problems with trench play. The DL looks great and the OL is solid. It doesnt look bad enough to make me reach in a draft for an OL, but it also isnt so good i wouldn’t take an OL in the case of two players and there being a 50/50 judgment. I love draft talk, but i really think we are way too far out to even think we need this or that in the first round, and most all the positions we have could probably be considered for additions if one or two things happen. I dont howver think anyone of them at this time stand out as a position to focus on.

  17. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    D
there is going to be a bunch of DT’s in the first and second this year!

It will be like Operah giving them away!

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah im not saying we ignore the position in the draft but i dont necessarily feel that the first round is a necessary investment. I could see going early for sure, and again, i think most of it hinges on James.

  18. D's avatar D says:

A lot about the OL depends on us extending James. If we dont, then yeah we probably need to put some priority on OL. Otherwise its just health of the players we have that would put any additional need there.

  19. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Thanks for y’alls response to my post. I was getting that feeling just based on predicted scores posted on here. I realize now (as you said Tim) that most are just trying to be positive. I get that and see that, in reality, we all have our concerns. I quit predicting the score cause it never seemed to come out that way. LOL TBH, I also feel this team (mainly O) is not playing up to it’s capability and when they do, it’s going to be real fun! Go Dolphins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. D's avatar D says:

I think pass rush is always a place to add, so adding a DT probably wouldn’t be a bad thing, just again, with the strategy of rotating the DL, we dont need to blow a load on a DT necessarily. Id take one if thats what the draft gave me, i just wouldnt try to force the selection.

To answe ryour question fully, i think if we add the best player we are strengthing the team, and the next man up scenario. I dont think that concept has any position attached to it. We could still use more talent in several areas, and like you were saying with Phillips being an UDFA, maybe thats a reason we change our minds and weight DT higher. Maybe James leaves and we have to weight OT higher, but we could easily extend either of these guys or both, so what then. Im just saying right now with the talent and the needs i dont see one position full nor one position empty. This is a good place to be.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My bad, I explained why I brought this up. It’s about using the draft to be ready when guys move on but you don’t have to rely on rookies. The Steelers and some other teams have done this in the past and that’s what keeps you good and competitive without needing major FA players. That’s all. 🙂

  26. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My draft prospect needs are based on age and soon to be UFAs. Use the draft to develop replacements under solid players when they’re gone. We’re in that situation now with a lot of young players at a lot of positions. But TE, RB and DBs are not positions we have to worry about for a few years, we’re already young there.

My comments have nothing to do with saying we have a major void at any position because I don’t think we have that right now. It’s about what positions we will need to have guys waiting in the wings in a couple of years.

    • D's avatar D says:

Id say TE is still a ? we dont know about these guys. Would you turn down and OJ Howard TE in this next draft if by the end of the year either of the TE’s have become real weapons? Id still select a TE.

RB has a guy who is a freak athlete for sure, but he is getting older and he is only on a one year contract. We have no idea about Ballage. If we had a Guice or Michel like player available you dont add them? We had people wanting to add them this year with the RB’s that are on the roster.

DB isnt at all established, we have no true second CB on the boundary. Tankersly regressed so we dont really have depth either.

    • D's avatar D says:

Every position we have has needs to keep adding talent behind the current starters. You add the best player when you are in the position where you have starters and you just need to keep adding talent, because you increase your teams overall strength adding the best player and not passing on that guy for another position.

    yes

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I don’t mean we can’t upgrade any position. You can always find a better player at any position. I’m talking about having rookie contracts that don’t need to play as rookies right away to replace some guys who may not be here in the next couple of years.

For me as you know in the 1st rd you always take the BPA. I’m talking about what we do with 9 draft picks at this time next year. Basically what I’m saying is how do we get deeper without major FA $$$$$$$ acquisitions.

I’m not saying we’re great at every position, but I do not see a glaring void at any position where we can’t compete at this time.

Yeah thats the way i have seen it. Larsen didnt really look bad either. He isnt Sitton but he held up pretty good, and i think being thrown into things it was actually a pretty good performance. Our OL hasnt looked overwhelmed by either team and Detroit and the Browns spent most their games looking awful against the Jets front.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I only know of two people who feel if we get another injury on the OL we’re doomed. We should have drafted 2-3 more OL this year and have 15 OL on the roster. LOL

I watched Larsen repeat some of the same stuff he always struggles with. He struggles with movement across his face and he did last week. But, I wouldn’t say he had a bad game. It was a typical game for him. I don’t like him as a starter but if he’s gonna be….just be consistent.

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The reason we have 4 QBs on the roster right now is because Gase had a conversation with Ron Wolf – former GM of the Packers and other teams, who always believed in acquiring QBs. It’s not going to stay that way but for now Gase needs to find out who’s the guy he trusts the most behind Tannehill.

    • D's avatar D says:

By the end of the year im pretty certain we will be at 3. I think this 4 QB thing is extended evaluation on who the backup is and i think there is little way we put Falk on the PS because we know he will get poached. I dont see us with both Fales and Osweiler there all year. I might be wrong but i just dont see it. I think there is going to be an injury or something that makes us have to move someone up and drop one of them. I thought the Sitton IR was very likely going to do it, but it didnt, but i still think its headed that way.

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think it’s a commentary on the strength of our roster that we can even consider carrying 4 QBs. Everything else is adequately covered.

If you carry 4 QBs, it’s because either you have no true #1 or no obvious #2, which is us. This situation is both good and bad. It’s good because along with P, PK, and LS, the QB is the least rotational position.

It’s bad because if #1 QB goes down, you have a big mess. But at least you can sub your #3 for your first try if he isn’t holding up and the #3 also knows the playbook.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannehill is Gase’s guy. It’s about #2 let’s not get off course here. 🙂

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“it’s because either you have no true #1 or no obvious #2”.

No worries, but can we agree you said this? 🙂

      • D's avatar D says:

While i know this is true, i think its folly to be too in bed with any player. He needs to prep like he might have to make a QB change each year, especially after a significant injury. This isnt to be considered a slight towards Tanny by Gase by doing that, Tanny shouldnt think it is (and i dont think he would for that matter) its just a function of doing your job as a HC. If he isnt making preparations for it, then we are vulnerable.

Imagine if we were the Browns yesterday and Tanny has to leave with a concussion. The Browns had a really awesome next man up scenario. They drafted for this to happen, though i dont think they wanted it to be that soon. If we were in that same scenario, not only would we have lost last night, we would likely lose most the games the rest of this season. We’d be done.

I dont care if Tanny has a pro-bowl season, we really need to think hard about gettign a guy capabale of taking the reigns. If we make it though his entire rookie campaign with him just studying behind Tanny, then we can make a decision to either trade him and continue with Tanny or let him go, or make him our man the way they did with Rogers and Farve in GB.

  46. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Our offensive line can definitely improve. To me, if you lose one guy and it turns your offensive line into crap then you really didn’t have a good offense of line in the first place. Both tackles have played okay. The guards have been up and down. Our Center has played okay but I’m giving him some leash since he’s brand new to the team. I think he can play better.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As for next year’s draft, my biggest need is Center, although not usually a position taken in the first round. To me, if we draft the best C, say in the 2nd round, then we can let him learn behind our guy now, and he will be ready in a year or 2 to slide right in as a starter without totally freaking our offense out. But we need a better Center as Kilgore ages than any we have at depth now.

My other big need is a OG, because Sitton is hurt, Larsen is sketchy, and Davis is a knock on wood starter quality. Again if we took a first round OG, he could be the #1 sub and step in for Sitton after next year, or if someone gets hurt.

Maybe a first round OG beats out the UDFA Davis and we have a huge upgrade.
If we took a 3rd round OG, he would be better quality depth than we have now.

    • D's avatar D says:

I cant see any position we couldnt take someone in the 1st with. The only position i think wouldnt make sense for us in the 1st is WR and thants not because i think we got it on lockdown, its because i think this next years WR group is weak.

  48. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Holy shit everyone on NFLN gameday pickem, picked us???????????????

  49. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

But in the 1st, I’d most prefer a DT, especially this year. We need a superstar in there who can take over a game. Our 4 guys now can all rotate fine, but we need an all pro in there to take us to the next level.

If there is not a DT we like when we pick at 27, then a demon pass rusher would be my next choice.
Wake so far looks 5 years older than he did 2 years ago.

First round WRs are one of the biggest crap shoots. Besides, we have good speed and depth there for a while.

    • D's avatar D says:

We wont need a superstar DT if Gase plans to continue doing what he is doing with the rotation thing. If that truly works out we can keep adding with middle rounders or players who fall and create good value for us.

    • Good post ER. Fitzpatrick was the BPA for Us, and every team can find room or use for the best players.
I don’t consider Fitzpatrick as a tru blue safety though, because he could excel playing corner also. He’s a defensive back, and ones as talented as He are ALWAYS needed

Yes, you are missing two extremely important words.
You are missing the words “either” and “or”.
When those words are used, the phrasing signifies “one or the other,”
I did not say “and” which means “both together.”
So, a writer using “either” means one of the two scenarios exists as a causative factor in the effect.

  75. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I believe in BPA, but there is a point when that becomes ridiculous.
For the 49ers to draft a QB in the first round, even if he is BPA, that would be a very bad decision.

BPA must be balanced by need, just as need must not cause a stretch pick aka overdrafting.
First round draft picks must be expected to become first-year starters.
They’ll make rookie mistakes, but the FO hopes those do not cause an actual loss of a game.
Teams need to determine their weakest link (need) and shore it up in the draft or FA.

That’s why I think we did so well this year in the draft.
Minkah was BPA but also filled a position of need for us, which was “clean-up crew” against TEs, RBs, and slot guys. Then we NEEDED a seam-busting TE and Gesicki was BPA at that position, we NEEDED speed at LB and Jerome was fastest LB available, we NEEDED a true blocking TE and Smythe was BPA for that, and we NEEDED a young studly RB who can catch and has speed and Ballage was BPA at that. Finally we got the BPA @ PK since we did not even have one.

Plus we needed more pass rush so Quinn was BPA and we needed a high motor guy at DT and Akeem was BPA that. Then we needed to replace Landry, although it took two to do that.

The Sitton thing is too depressing to discuss.

Oakland has weapons and good players. We just can’t let any particular one of them win the game for them. Carr will complete some, Cooper will catch a few, Cook will get loose sometimes, Lynch will break tackles into beast mode.

As long as none of the latter 3 gets a hundred yards or more, we’ll be fine.

We need to score first and put up 3 TDs before halftime. They do not have the type of team that can adjust well or come from behind well.

Plus they have a new coach who does not have nearly 100% buy-in.

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do agree with Mike E that they are desperate. Now if a team is 0-5 and desperate, they are also somewhat hopeless.

Oakland is only 0-2, so they can still handle the doubts, the locker-room whispers, and the searching for funky plays etc. without full-on panic mode.

We can push them into panic mode and hopelessness by getting a big lead early.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The 0-2 desperate mentality only goes so far, especially when they already have major things against them like travel, 1pm Sept in Miami vs 10am in Oakland, and those black hot jerseys.

It’s going to be hard for them to play 4 good quarters, especially if they come out playing hard. If it rains for a short time, they’ll be cooked when the sun comes back out.

You have to win the advantage games on your schedule, and this one and games 1 and 2 were 3 of the most advantageous we’ll see all season. Week 1 Sept in Miami, week 2 jets coming off of a Monday blowout.

The schedule has been very fortunate so far, we must take advantage on Sunday, because it’s not going to be as fortunate with games in NE and Houston on Thursday Night.

It could be either a DT or a DE, like the next Aaron Donald or the next Von Miller. I would prefer a DT, but we need someone who can blow up the other team all by himself.

Like Suh and the Suh plan, which was good but premature and way too expensive.

Homestanding gives a FG or a TD advantage, depending on how good the home team is and their tradition in their stadium.

It’s a 7-10 point advantage in NE (ignoring the cheat-points for the moment).
For us it’s barely a FG, more like a 1.5 pt advantage.

The heat (and the glare of the bright sunlight) (and the type of rain, if that happens) and even moreso, the humidity are a very real TD-10 point advantage before cooler weather comes. The black jerseys are just diabolical. (Insert evil laugh track.)

Jet-lag is a real thing in civilian life for people flying west to east. My legs feel like giant gummybears in London, my head is stuffy, and my brain is hazy. Plus ppl are grouchier, and some even have trouble with appetite and digestion.

    That’s worth another 3-6 points.

New coaches are a Minus 2-10, depending on various factors. Player-coach controversies are a Minus 2-5 points. Losing your superstar (usually by injury) is a Minus 2-7 points.

We have momentum on our side (3 points), plus Gase’s playbook and personnel are taking hold. (Plus 7.)
