2018 Season – Game 3 – Raiders @ Dolphins

2 and oh!  No misprint here, The Dolphins are 2-0.  They went into NJ to visit the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium, and came away with an impressive victory.  The Jets had thoroughly dismantled the Detroit Lions in Detroit the previous week, 48-17, and they looked pretty damn good doing it too. Don’t let anyone take away or diminish this victory.  The Dolphins were far from flawless, but this unit looks so much more like a T-E-A-M than it has in some time.  I know, it’s easy to say that after 2 wins, and there’s some truth to that, how they respond to adversity will be key as well, but at the moment, there don’t seem to be any “ME!” players.

The team is listening to Adam Gase, and they definitely seem to be more disciplined.  The Dolphins fumbled 3 times in the game, Tannehill had 2, and more on that . . .   The strip sack where Tannehill fumbled, I am now positive that he DID NOT SEE Jamal Adams beat Mike Gesicki and he was just casually rolling out when Adams got by Gesicki for the sack.  I know some have said Tannehill looks slower, lost a step or two, but I don’t really see that.  What I think Tannehill has lost is some of his cutting ability, but his straight-line speed is there.  It’s also possible he improves in this area as he gets more comfortable and trusts his knee more and more in time.

2 Penalties in the game.  Discipline.  I couldn’t be happier with the production of that D-line.  If you think I miss Suh or Godchaux following Suh’s lead jumping offsides, I freaking don’t!  If you think I miss Jarvis Landry and his patented first down gestures (I do a little bit) I don’t miss the LOOK AT ME stuff.  It’s still early in the season, but after 2 games, Adam Gase seems to have shaped the roster with his guys, and it seems to be working.  Good on him.

We were all worried about the defense, the D-line, the LB’s, and the CB’s too, because Cordrea Tankersley seems to have regressed this season, and was inactive.  So far, it’s all working.  The D-line in particular sans Suh has been better than advertised, make that much better!  Talk about T-E-A-M, this unit personifies this.  Everyone is in the action and contributing.  Godchaux (6 TKL, 3 AST), Phillips (1 TAK, 1 AST, 1 SACK), Spence (4 TKL, 3 AST), Taylor (5 TKL, 2 AST),  Hayes (2 TKL, 1 SACK).  We’ve only registered 3 sacks, and 2 of them are by the DT’s, Robert Quinn has the other.  Safe to say if this DL play continues, Suh will not be tweeting in this direction in ’18, unless maybe to say I’m sorry, and I was wrong.

Back to the CB’s.  We haven’t played a team that is deep with WR talent.  The Titans have Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis, and Matthews is still hurting.  The Jets have Quincy Enunwa and Robbie Anderson, along with Terrelle Pryor, and then Jermaine Kearse who just returned from injury.  Neither WR group is impressive, so our CB’s haven’t been truly tested yet.  That changes a bit when da Raiders come to town.  Amari Cooper had a down year last season, but he’s started much faster this season, and he already has 11 receptions.  Jordy Nelson is a big talented veteran receiver and Martavis Bryant who came over from the Steelers is another bigger receiver who is a big play threat with great speed.  The Raiders also have TE Jared Cook who has started off very fast this season, so our secondary may play a huge role in this game.  That, and the pass rush.  We have to get to Derek Carr and make him uncomfortable.  He’s been uncomfortable most of the time, and that’s why he’s struggling, but if he’s allowed to sit back there, he will make us pay.

In the secondary, it will be interesting to see if Cordrea Tankersley is active, I think he’ll have to be.  Minkah’s snap count will probably increase as well, especially if we limit Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin in the run game.  If we force them to pass, there will be plenty of 3, 4 and maybe even 5 receiver sets.  Jared Cook is a dangerous receiver who has given us trouble before when he was with the Titans, and then also with the Rams.  Our secondary may be tested, and once again, if the run defense does it’s job, we’ll need more pass rush from Quinn, Wake, Harris and Hayes, as well as the DT’s.

The Raiders are scoring only 16 PPG, and have given up 26.5 PPG.  Small sample of course, but they have struggled so far.  You can almost flip the stats for our Dolphins, scoring 23.5 PPG and allowing only 16.  If we can keep that up against the Raiders, we should be 3-0, but . . .   The Raiders are desperate after plunking down the $100M contract for Head Coach Jon Gruden, and they will be desperate for a win, and also consider all the people who do the power rankings, how much it must be killing them for the Dolphins to be anywhere past #17 in the NFL.

I think we continue what we’ve been doing on offense, the combo of Drake and Gore has been effective, Gore really bailed us out on that 3rd and 19 play.  Neither back has topped the 100 YD mark, but the sharing is working.  I would imagine Devante Parker will see his first action this Sunday, as reports stated he was OK to play last week against the Jets.  We’ve spread the ball around so well, I wouldn’t expect Parker in the lineup changing that much at all.  I’d like to see Gesicki and Derby get more involved in the pass game, especially Gesicki, but we may have to be patient in that regard.  I think once Tannehill develops that trust that is so essential, and they understand each other, and learn what each other wants and can do, I think that Gesicki will start getting more passes thrown his way.

Feinstein isn’t a socialist. She’s a power whore like most of our national politicians. Few of them have any deep held beliefs beyond believing they want to keep feeding from the trough.

It’s just a delay tactic to push the Kavanaugh vote past the midterms.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steve it is now. Q is whether she had it planned that way to start with or whether others stepped up and leaked to make it that way. But it is either way…. even if still could work after all over.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They do the same shit far too often and they dont even care if its true. Anything to fuck the other side.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s obvious Ford is just a pawn, she didnt plan anything. What likely happened is they went digging around his past and found Ford was seeing a shrink, because of high school sexual abuse. They asked her if Kavanaugh did it and she said no, well did you know him or ever socialize with him. Yes. Ok good enough, we dont have to prove it, just create doubt. Oh and you won’t have to testify, because by the time the FBI investigation is done the midterms will be passed.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You going to the game tmrw? And I accept Feinstein for what she is even if not my political flavor if you will. Least see some integrity in there.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Don’t see the integrity. I see her rolling left to keep her seat. I find it difficult to see integrity in any of them. Maybe Nunes.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well we can talk about Nunes at the Fest….LMAO. And that comes from a GOP guy. You going to the game? OD will be there….could tell you where he sits.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Another advantage to rotating players like we do on D and the skilled positions on O is the lack of complacency. You cant worry about the quality of your opponent, you need to worry about the guys playing your position, because if you aren’t getting it done, you won’t be on the field much.

I’m not saying the Raiders aren’t a quality team, just that if some players aren’t taking them seriously they’ll be riding the pine. I dont expect it, because nothing breeds quality play/effort like competition at a position.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Other advantages our locker vs theirs, Gase has everyone buying in. Gase to Wake and Gore, I’m going to give you guys less snaps to keep you fresh at crunch time and prolong your careers. Wake/Gore where do we sign up?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Yes! Again I agree. And he said to Quinn “Let’s rejuvenate that career.” and “Let’s play you at your best natural position.” (which btw seems like a big “Duh!” thing anyway.)

These are the things that we see that apparently a lot of national guys missed.

They hired a really good DL coach with a Hyperactive coaching style and said “we need a DT.. Who do you like?” and he said “Get me Akeem. His motor never quits.” Bingo … another great fit.

I hope TJ lays the wood to him early. Raekwon also. Take the juice out of his old legs. Heat affects older guys even worse than young backs.

Trust me i know about old legs.

PS: Bellicheater is 6 months younger than I. He got married in the same year as I.
(although I am still married to the same girl and he is not)
Pete Carroll is a month and a half older than I.
He married his second wife the year before I married.
Bellicheck played the same position I played on offense – TE, and Carroll played the same that I played on defense – Safety. (They played in small colleges, whereas I did not.)

So we are the 3 oldest guys in pro football, besides our blog guru, OD.

  9. I think it would be prudent to hold off on any and all picks for the Supreme Court until all the investigations of Kavanaugh and Trump are completed.
A seat on the Supreme Court is a lifetime position, and it’s necessary to get complete facts before hastily placing someone in a lifetime position, that May or May not be the right person for the job.

We need to know if Kavanaugh is the right person or not, as of this moment that is unproven.
We also need to know of criminal charges or removal is in the cards for the president, Before the president gets to pick someone for the court. Or it could be another hasty decision that goes bad.
There is nothing gained by rushing, and measure twice cut once applies here too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I would like to see many of the pols questioning him to be on the other side of the questioning. Then you would see how fast he’s appointed. LOL

      • Lol. I just hope this isn’t a rush job, all the investigations of the president and the nomineee need to be completed first to be sure the lifetime job is filled with a guy or lady that can last for a few months, lol

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Sigh . . .

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we should wait until there’s a Democratic President to choose the next Supreme Court Judge. Yeah, that’s the ticket

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know people on the left worry that Roe v. Wade will be overturned if Kavanaugh is appointed but that will never happen and it never does when a conservative justice is appointed. Supreme Court Justices don’t make up their own rules, they simply uphold the laws of the land and the Constitution.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s not so unlikely. Iowa lawmakers already proposed a bill banning abortion in hopes of a challenge that leads to appeals all the way up the Supreme Court

Kavanaugh has said he thinks is established precedent, sonhe wouldn’t overturn it. But that doesn’t mean he’s eager to apply it as precedent to new challenges

Unquestionably a 6-3 court is going to have a big effect in this manner

    • That’s what happened to Obama, he had 11 months left of his term, but didn’t get to pick one. But, Obama wasn’t under investigations, he just didn’t get to pick because 11 months left.
Well, until The current president investigations are completed, We don’t know how much time He has, so it’s prudent to wait versus hastily moving forward with unknown events on the horizon

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Pete Carroll lost two HC jobs that he applied for —
Minnesota Vikings and Stanford in college.
Both jobs went to Dennis Green.

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Feeling Oinky about tomorrow

We have a shot to go 3-0
The raiders are the best offense we’ve played so far
So will be a test for our defense

Hopefully the pass rush can keep up what they did last week

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Time for Charles Harris to show us what he shows the coaches

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s kind of tough for him because he’s stuck in a 5 man rotation with Quinn, Wake and Hayes as the top three and then there is also Branch. Just do your job when called on.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If he makes things happen out there he’ll earn more snaps. He hasn’t done that yet. I think they’d happily put him ahead of Andre Branch if he starting making plays

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Prudence has no part in this equation . . .

  15. That how Gorsuch got a job, We waited 11 months til a differant party came in And they got to pick Him.
The argument was , for right or wrong, that the Supreme Court Justice should mirror the future president.
The future president could possibly be democrat, no one knows, so waiting would be ok if it was ok the last time.
But this time is even more vital because of unfinished investigations

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Supreme Court Justices are not supposed to be political. They don’t even stand or react to the state of the union addresses. Their job is to interpret the law and uphold the Constitution. They don’t write laws, that’s congresses job.

    • Right, but it IS a lifetime position, so thourouh vetting and completed investigations should be given priority to any and all candidates and their president, or We don’t know what we are getting til it’s too late to change it

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes that’s true and though I don’t agree with the lifetime part of it that’s the way our government was constructed.

Personally I don’t worry about who gets appointed because of the process they have to go through.

  16. Tim, Our DL claims they are ALL starters, and like the rotations 😎
Unselfish teammates, striving together to meet their goals, that’s TEAM

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But Branch was offsides and it didn’t count

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

IMO Trump choosing two nominees for the Supreme Court will be the biggest and longest lasting legacy of his presidency. The nominations are for life, and Supreme Court decisions affect more of our daily life than whoever is sitting in the oval office ever will.

I hate seeing the political machinations designed to hold up the nomination until after midterms. I hated it when the same thing happened before the Presidential election as well, but it’s funny, because the only thing that made me consider voting for Trump was the fact he’d be choosing a replacement for Scalia, and I was concerned about the SC shifting too far with a Hillary pick.

Freaking politics at its worst, but it is what it is.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our political climate is so juvenile these days. But at the end of the day, they are all people, Americans, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters with the same ultimate goals in life. It would be nice if everyone took a step back and realized that.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I try not to give too much weight to the effect it will have on the scotus bc I think it’s fairly unpredictable

      I like a 5-4 court in general
And frankly, no matter how this shakes up – I’m pretty sure it will be 5-4 again within a couple of years

    ——————-

That’s nice in theory, but interpretation is determined, or at least influenced by ideology. There is no getting around it. That is why it’s so important to keep a balanced SC.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But when has it ever been so outrageous that we can’t function? I’ve never seen it but I’ve sure heard about the horror of what’s to come if this or that person is appointed.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You’re absolutely right in this, the nation isn’t going to collapse if we suddenly lean more right than left on the SC, lol. And I’m not saying that at all. As a matter of fact, I would say that Scalia’s replacement was keeping status quo, and Kavanaugh may move it a little more to the right, but not to an extreme. I’m not predicting doom and gloom.

Frankly, I’d like my SC to be slightly more conservative. Again, the only reason I even for a second thought about voting Trump was for the Scalia replacement nomination, lol.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty liberal on social issues and I prefer a 5-4 conservative SC too

These things aren’t as connected as people like to argue they are

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Again… even if it was heavily slanted ideologically one way or the other the positions of the SCOTUS is not to change anything. Of course the human element will always be a part of it, but there is no getting around that. Sometimes we Americans feel like we’re dealing with humans vs. another species. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It may not be the position of the SC to change things. Again, great in theory. But the reality is that the decisions they make affect so many real aspects of our life. It’s far more impactful than the lawmakers who can be changed out by the people at will, and new laws written. Any law written can be changed by the next guy, deemed unconstitutional or interpreted however.

A heavily leaning Conservative court and you can throw out Roe vs Wade. Religious discrimination vs gay rights in business? That is still in the process of being worked out. Death penalty constitutional? Just to name a few that will determine and affect lives for years to come..

A heavily slanted SC either way is the last thing we want.

And just to be clear I don’t think the Kavanaugh nomination puts us in that position. I’m ok with the nomination.

  20. A balanced Supreme Court represents both sides, if it’s all waited and rushed to come up with a way to get 2 right leaning candidates in their quickly, doesn’t make sense that would represent all sides, just one

  21. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

The supreme court is supposed to uphold the Constitution!

I’m still sorry That popped up on accident!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I worry more about who writes the laws or amends the Constitution than the ones who uphold it. But the ones who write the laws or amend the Constitution are elected officials of we the people so ultimately it always comes back to us.

  22. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

If you like defense, turn on Clemson VS GT!

  23. The constitution reveals and documents Americans rights.
So of course they shouldn’t be all Trump picks, nor should be rushed until investigations are completed.
An ideal balance IMO would be to let the future president select the next one, like they did for Gorsusch so it’s not unbalanced. If the next president is a progressive or democrat, a boat load of right leaning SC justices don’t represent Him, or the choice of American voters

  24. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

The balance of our government written by our founding fathers many years ago despite their own personal hypocrisies. They knew the danger of personal agendas and called themselves out. That’s the beauty of the USA and its laws (The Constitution and Bill of Rights). We protect ourselves from ourselves. 🙂

Kong, all of that is possible if it’s the will of the people. But this country is a lot more moderate than extreme. It’s also not easy to crack the Constitution and Bill of Rights because the majority always defends it. At the end of the day it’s what the American people decide. That’s how it works. I’m predicting only a 15% chance of complete success, with a 78% likelihood of first half spoiler, and 81% for a disastrous endgame revelation.

It would be awesome to see this team put up 30+. Our D will keep ’em under 30, so if we break that, you can pencil in another ‘W’.

3-0 would be a sweet lead-in going to NE. We could then read and listen all week about how this Dolphins team hasn’t got a chance in hell in that game, LOL.

David — actually think Jason Miller has at least some common sense behind him. My worst nightmare would be a Judge Jeanine now Justice Jeanine thing.

      • O Yea? See the news on Miller today, where he gave his mistress an abortion drink that almost killed her, and killed her fetus? That’s not common or sense, and we don’t need that for Supreme Court justice , or the White House either

      • He cheated on his wife, knocked a girl up, and showed up at her doorstep to offer her a smoothie, that had an abortion pill in it. She wasn’t aware of the pill, and lost her baby and spent 2 days in hospital racking up medical bills. So You tell Me, Does a lawyer see anything here that this woman was denied her right to birth, and her health was jeopardized , she went into a coma, and in the hospital also? At her expense too?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — now I know why you brought up Jason Miller. Didn’t catch the latest news on him. Was just saying he seems a reasonable talking head at least unlike Judge Jeanine.

The thing about discussing politics is how it’s discussed. If you talk about the current events of the day and the consequences of decisions that are made etc. in a civil manner, it ain’t no big thing. If it’s about my side is right and your side is fucked in the head with no leeway, that’s when you have problems. Many of us here are capable of the civil manner. I’ve seen it before and I saw it here today. Well done, folks! 🙂

So let me tell you about my ball situation…

A quick recap: I’ve had the same gameball for the last 10 years (the ball I hold, carry, toss, catch, and throw at the couch during the game). I go to pump it up minutes before game one and it pops. So I watched the Tennessee game with an old, flat ball. We dominated play and won.

Well, I ordered a new ball, and it hadn’t arrived by the Jest game. So I watched the Jest game with an old, flat ball. We dominated play and won.

My new ball arrived the day after the Jest game. I don’t even want to take it out of the box. It’s sitting in my room and I still haven’t touched it. I figure I won’t touch it until we lose. So against the Raiders tomorrow, I will be watching with an old, flat ball. Hopefully we dominate play and win.

The Dolphins allow a NFL-low 56.6 passer rating from opposing quarterbacks.

They were tied for the NFL’s lead with five interceptions following Week 2.

They are giving up just 79 yards per game on the ground, which ranks eighth in the NFL.

And they are yielding the 4th fewest points per game. 16

“If he wants the name, he can take it if he wants,” Minkah Fitzpatrick said of Ryan Fitzpatrick (no relation). “He’s a great football player. If he wants it, contact me and my people and he can have it if he wants it.”

    —————
You’re doing it yet AGAIN, Tim. And I guess it’s all about OD and me wanting to draft 3 OL in the ’18 Draft, so as to have 15 OL on our team, as you’ve stated.

Don’t “feel” for me, don’t pity me, and certainly… don’t LIE about me.

As for OD, I don’t really care what he has to say because he’s full of himself and he’s had it out for me for years because I don’t agree with everything he says, not the other way around. I respect what he did for this country with his service and the fact that he witnessed this team’s hey day. Other than that, I don’t care.

So if you feel the need to ignorantly defend him because you fail to know the history, so be it. I don’t really care about that either but I will say it’s unfortunate. When I’m not on this blog none of this matters to me. When I come here and see people throw shit around, yes it does irritate me a bit, because it shits on the flow of others wanting to discuss the team. Other than that, It really doesn’t matter.

  55. Politics divides, because our current leader divides. But the love for the Dolphins is all positive, and unites us in agreement. Everyone is here because We think this team is special, or it is to Us in different ways.
But Come Game Day, life halts for the Dolphins game, lol even if the games 7 hours long! Dolphins have the best fans imo, we stick with this team thick and thin, and are going to be rewarded with a winning team now!

I mean when did it become ok to say in public, Fuck “the President” Who ever it is???????????????????

I don’t know what you guys are so upset about

I’m enjoying all the fireworks with the SCOTUS drama
THis gamemenship isn’t new – it was fairly predictable after Merrick Garland if you ask me

If you start playing games like that with Garland it’s hard to stop the gamemenship when you have suddenly find yourself on the other side – the democrats would be silly to roll over and not completely blow up the pick. I’m surprised they didn’t put up more of a stink with Gorsuch

It’s kind of a hail Mary though by them. I doubt it’s likely to be fruitful

    If Kavanaugh isn’t confirmed
Trump still gets to pick the next person

The idea that you can stop that from happening until 2020 is far fetched to me

The easy play by the Republicans is just to withdraw Kavanaugh and put there next person up

In case you are wondering who that it – it’s a judge Amy Comey Barrett a Trump appointee to the district court
    Liberals will hate her too
She’s prolife and a devout catholic

But I doubt she’s gets accused of trying to rape some one in high school🤭

Between the 2 I favored Kavanaugh (when it was down to those two)based on experience alone – I knew exactly what Kavanaugh would be on the SCOTUS

But Barrett is new to the court and young and it’s sometimes hard to predict whether a judges politics and rulings line up – so she’s kind of a wildcard

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well said Pig. No matter who wins in November….. GOP will control the Senate till end of year. And what does it matter Kavanaugh or someone like Barrett? Unless you are Kavanaugh of course. Think most of the drama here is just political drama to set up for the mid-terms.

Good morning Mob (and Vietnam if anyone is there from the mob).
Been hectic here and have spent the fist few weeks of the season catching up on the blog’s goings on – not read comments religiously, but scanned and read in more detail when bits piqued my interest.

Firstly to KV13 (I think it was) Brits (or at least me) wipe front to back. Anything other would be unthinkable. I have not polled anyone else on their wiping habits, but if anyone is interested I will ask around. Our farts do not smell (other than of roses) and we blow smoke rings in the shape of bowler hats. If I ever get to a fest, it will become immediately apparent that all my fart comments are a lie and I could perhaps compete with the flying pig in this department (especially after English real ale which is still “alive” and has a bit more yeast then the average US brew!

Secondly, happy birthday to everyone who has had a birthday since last season.

Thirdly, I mis-read a comment from Mike E about disturbing the ball well this year. After a wtf moment I realised he’d said distributed.

Finally, long may Kong’s ball remain flaccid and difficult to pump. The Cheatriots can give advice on maintenance in this regard.

All ok this side of the water. Mum’s tumour has not grown and the drugs seem to have kept it at bay (or at least growing as fast as it would have). I’m taking her out for lunch later and on holiday the week after next. Either of these statements would have been unthinkable 6-8 months ago, so happy days for now. I’m mega-impressed with Ken’s on-going fight and his return to a new normality and getting his old life back even if it is a slightly less full-on version as of now but will hopefully keep improving. Mum won’t beat cancer her cancer sadly, but at least she’s got a good quality of life at the mo.

I tried to stream the first game on a balcony in Crete. The weather was a bastard. Went to bed at 1am local time and found it finished after 3am. Good call. Pissed myself laughing when I read Rock on the Cap’n Morgans hours before kick-off. Car crash.

Fantastic win vs Jets on the road. 2-0 baby.

Makes me sad to see bloggers falling out. Hope hatchets can be buried (not in each others heads 😉 ) and a truce declared. Opinions will always differ bur friendship is more important than petty differences.
