2018 Season – Game 3 – Raiders @ Dolphins

2 and oh!  No misprint here, The Dolphins are 2-0.  They went into NJ to visit the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium, and came away with an impressive victory.  The Jets had thoroughly dismantled the Detroit Lions in Detroit the previous week, 48-17, and they looked pretty damn good doing it too. Don’t let anyone take away or diminish this victory.  The Dolphins were far from flawless, but this unit looks so much more like a T-E-A-M than it has in some time.  I know, it’s easy to say that after 2 wins, and there’s some truth to that, how they respond to adversity will be key as well, but at the moment, there don’t seem to be any “ME!” players.

The team is listening to Adam Gase, and they definitely seem to be more disciplined.  The Dolphins fumbled 3 times in the game, Tannehill had 2, and more on that . . .   The strip sack where Tannehill fumbled, I am now positive that he DID NOT SEE Jamal Adams beat Mike Gesicki and he was just casually rolling out when Adams got by Gesicki for the sack.  I know some have said Tannehill looks slower, lost a step or two, but I don’t really see that.  What I think Tannehill has lost is some of his cutting ability, but his straight-line speed is there.  It’s also possible he improves in this area as he gets more comfortable and trusts his knee more and more in time.

2 Penalties in the game.  Discipline.  I couldn’t be happier with the production of that D-line.  If you think I miss Suh or Godchaux following Suh’s lead jumping offsides, I freaking don’t!  If you think I miss Jarvis Landry and his patented first down gestures (I do a little bit) I don’t miss the LOOK AT ME stuff.  It’s still early in the season, but after 2 games, Adam Gase seems to have shaped the roster with his guys, and it seems to be working.  Good on him.

We were all worried about the defense, the D-line, the LB’s, and the CB’s too, because Cordrea Tankersley seems to have regressed this season, and was inactive.  So far, it’s all working.  The D-line in particular sans Suh has been better than advertised, make that much better!  Talk about T-E-A-M, this unit personifies this.  Everyone is in the action and contributing.  Godchaux (6 TKL, 3 AST), Phillips (1 TAK, 1 AST, 1 SACK), Spence (4 TKL, 3 AST), Taylor (5 TKL, 2 AST),  Hayes (2 TKL, 1 SACK).  We’ve only registered 3 sacks, and 2 of them are by the DT’s, Robert Quinn has the other.  Safe to say if this DL play continues, Suh will not be tweeting in this direction in ’18, unless maybe to say I’m sorry, and I was wrong.

Back to the CB’s.  We haven’t played a team that is deep with WR talent.  The Titans have Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis, and Matthews is still hurting.  The Jets have Quincy Enunwa and Robbie Anderson, along with Terrelle Pryor, and then Jermaine Kearse who just returned from injury.  Neither WR group is impressive, so our CB’s haven’t been truly tested yet.  That changes a bit when da Raiders come to town.  Amari Cooper had a down year last season, but he’s started much faster this season, and he already has 11 receptions.  Jordy Nelson is a big talented veteran receiver and Martavis Bryant who came over from the Steelers is another bigger receiver who is a big play threat with great speed.  The Raiders also have TE Jared Cook who has started off very fast this season, so our secondary may play a huge role in this game.  That, and the pass rush.  We have to get to Derek Carr and make him uncomfortable.  He’s been uncomfortable most of the time, and that’s why he’s struggling, but if he’s allowed to sit back there, he will make us pay.

In the secondary, it will be interesting to see if Cordrea Tankersley is active, I think he’ll have to be.  Minkah’s snap count will probably increase as well, especially if we limit Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin in the run game.  If we force them to pass, there will be plenty of 3, 4 and maybe even 5 receiver sets.  Jared Cook is a dangerous receiver who has given us trouble before when he was with the Titans, and then also with the Rams.  Our secondary may be tested, and once again, if the run defense does it’s job, we’ll need more pass rush from Quinn, Wake, Harris and Hayes, as well as the DT’s.

The Raiders are scoring only 16 PPG, and have given up 26.5 PPG.  Small sample of course, but they have struggled so far.  You can almost flip the stats for our Dolphins, scoring 23.5 PPG and allowing only 16.  If we can keep that up against the Raiders, we should be 3-0, but . . .   The Raiders are desperate after plunking down the $100M contract for Head Coach Jon Gruden, and they will be desperate for a win, and also consider all the people who do the power rankings, how much it must be killing them for the Dolphins to be anywhere past #17 in the NFL.

I think we continue what we’ve been doing on offense, the combo of Drake and Gore has been effective, Gore really bailed us out on that 3rd and 19 play.  Neither back has topped the 100 YD mark, but the sharing is working.  I would imagine Devante Parker will see his first action this Sunday, as reports stated he was OK to play last week against the Jets.  We’ve spread the ball around so well, I wouldn’t expect Parker in the lineup changing that much at all.  I’d like to see Gesicki and Derby get more involved in the pass game, especially Gesicki, but we may have to be patient in that regard.  I think once Tannehill develops that trust that is so essential, and they understand each other, and learn what each other wants and can do, I think that Gesicki will start getting more passes thrown his way.

Every time there is a highlight I see a throw beyond the line of scrimmage and I get nostalgic

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol at the Den Balt score of 17-14, that was supposed to be 2 of the top fantasy defenses.

  24. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Could have been worse

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

All things considered I’m good being down 10-7.

Ok, TD to close the half and start the half

  28. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

considering how this game started, Fins are in a pretty good position, imo.

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Now they will throw it downfield as part of their 2 min offense and probably move it really well

  30. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    well
with all the terrible plays we’ve made, if we can get to half-time down 3, we should feel relieved.
    Still sucks.

  31. New Age's avatar New Age says:

So…the goal of our offense is for Tannehill to have a +100 rating but only throw 150 yards a game? Is this the best we can do after 3 years of prep by Tannehill?

  32. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Giants putting a beating on Texans. Wtf ?!

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ok, after shitty first half play by Tannehill the team has a 135.4 passer rating.

The next four minutes is where great QB’s make themselves felt

  34. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Okay. Score, get into the half, get the 2nd half kick off and score. Flip the game.

  35. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    This just makes me furious

    Why not all game

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m kinda tired of uneven play, never dominating teams, and some stupid play calls. Isn’t 15+ years of this garbage enough. You’re not the only angry one lol.

  38. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

moving the ball… Raiders are on their heels

  39. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    steveccnv says:
    September 23, 2018 at 2:19 pm

Not many plays will do that, that’s why it isn’t all about the QB.

It’s as much or more Tannehill’s fault that we aren’t getting enough plays.

He completed a lot of dump off passes that were no good to keep the drive going.

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Where’s the hold

  41. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Nice grab by Mike E G

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That was not holding on Kilgore.

  43. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    That’s horrible

  44. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Wow just wow

  45. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    WTF with these calls

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That was a terrible call against Stills.

  47. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

  48. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    2 shit calls against us

  49. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    That call was atrocious

  50. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

THAT WAS SOME FUCKING BULLSHIT OFFICIATING THERE

  51. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well wasn’t that special Zebra’s!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

illegal pick? It’s like the refs are all ex-jazz players (improvise improvise)

  53. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

WTF is with these awful penalties, no way in hell is that OPI on Stills he went under the DB, DB made contact.

  54. D's avatar D says:

Wow 2 extremely fucked up calls. Blatantly bad.

  55. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    The zebras SUCK today! 😡

  56. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Well we’ve been punched in the mouth!
How are you going to respond?????????????????

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow!!!! Way to go refs totally fucking up the game. SMH

  58. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We moved the ball really well
    Then got shitty calls
But why did they wait so long to run a few plays beyond the LOS
Forget about the way that half ended
    What about how it started?

  59. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The stripes took away points from us right there. That was criminal.

  60. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Both that fake hold call and the offensive pass interference were BLATANT interference by the officials to steer the outcome of the game. Those refs should lose their jobs.

  61. D's avatar D says:

No way that was a hold on Kilgore. His hands stayed inside. Just a really good block imo. Gesicki was being tackled already before he reached up and caught it. 3 really bad calls that cost up at least 3

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah that PI call was horseshit. Got to come out and have a nice long drive to start the 3rd and take the lead 14-10

  63. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Drake and Gore: 7 carries for 5 yards. SMH

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bills kicking the shiot out of the Vikes. Didn’t see that coming

  65. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tenn / Jax game tied at 3 – 3 half time

does that mean Tenn is good or not? they lost to us right? they must suck, then Jax must be a mirage…

? what do you guys think?

    😉

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So now we have to beat the officials too.

Oh and how the fuck are the Bills beating the Vikings 27-0? LOL

  67. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I’m starting to “feel” the narrative the NFL might like: ‘Gruden reverses slow start to take Raiders to playoffs in their last season in Oakland’ blah, blah, blah.
    OR
I’m just pissed about blatantly horrific penalties being called to stop our momentum.

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The D played soft Pig, we see it every week to close a half.

  69. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If it weren’t for some fundamental mistakes by the 0-2 Raidahz, this game could easily be out of hand for us right now.

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We have run with our RB’s seven times for a total of 5 yards.
    That needs to change.

  71. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jordy Nelson used to have break away speed, he got caught twice once by Baker.

  72. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Fins 7
    Oak 10
    Refs 7

    Close game

  73. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

that second long pass to Jordy Nelson… he DID get run down from behind by Minkah (regardless of how Nelson got open, Fitzpatrick has wheels)

  74. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We get the ball back and historically for the past 5 years this is our best quarter for scoring.

  75. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We must NOT abandon the run! The game is far too close to do that. Hopefully, we make some really sound changes coming into the second half, in terms of a game plan.

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Let’s see how the coaches did during half time. I want a scoring drive by the dolphins offense on the opening try.

  77. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Is the sideline reporter going to the prom after the game?

  78. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    WTF? off PI again?

  79. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    These refs suck

  80. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

The refs are controlling the game

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The pocket is secure and Ryan runs out of it right. wtf

  82. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I think Ken said it better

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    ANOTHER BOGUS pi CALL.

  84. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Anyone see the pick this time?

  85. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Shade line could not be more clear on the TV feed today. Dolphins are on one side of it and the Raiders bench on the other. New roof is more than about shade for fans. Thinking Lynch is gonna be real tired come 4th Q.

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I see that we’ve already abandoned the run.

  87. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

    Ugg

  88. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Spence
    Hayes
    Allen
    Derby

    All gone…..

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They showed no flag, it didnt come up on the screen, but I knew the PI was coming.

  90. D's avatar D says:

That last OPI was a lot more legit than the first. Grant made it too obvious he was intending to rub him. Still kinda weak call and most refs wouldn’t call that.

  91. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Even the biased for Raiders announcers are talking about the calls.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just call the obvious penalties. This shit is getting out hand.

  93. D's avatar D says:

Huge hold just then on Taylor

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The holding was practically the highlight of that last play
