2018 Season – Game 4 – Dolphins @ Patriots

This is a historical game for the 2018 Miami Dolphins.  You have to go back to September 21, 2008 (The Wildcat Game) to find a Dolphins victory in Foxboro in the last decade. Win this game and remain undefeated, and put some legitimate space between them and the New England Patriots, who were/are the favorite to capture the division crown, as per usghe.   On the other hand, it’s game 4, and coaches prefer to break up seasons into quarters, and starting off 3-1, even after a loss to the Patriots, while it would be disappointing, it’s playing .750 ball, and a nice start.  There are so many perspectives to view this matchup through, and all the same, I think it’s important to keep perspective. If the Dolphins win this game, the Patriots are not dead and buried, and we don’t get the division crown.  If we lose this game, it doesn’t put a black cloud on the season and cause us to spiral into a 3-13 season. 12 regular season games still remain

The way I choose to look at this game is I would like the Dolphins to look like they belong on the same field as the Patriots, that Adam Gase is a match for Bill Belichick, that Ryan Tannehill can be competitive in a big game against Tom Brady.  Play a solid football game, fight till the end, and if you don’t win, at least you didn’t look unprepared or outmatched.  We’re a touchdown plus underdogs for a reason, this is not a game we usually win.

We all prayed for no injuries this season after last year, and early on we were granted good fortune.  However, in the last couple of weeks, we lost our Pro-Bowl LG, Josh Sitton for the season with a torn rotator cuff, and this past week, we lost a valuable member of the D-line, DE/DT William Hayes to an ACL injury.  We have to overcome those injuries, we must persevere.  The best teams always do, and we can’t let it drag us down.  The Sitton injury affected us, we couldn’t run the ball against the Raiders.  Ryan Tannehill led the Dolphins with 26 yards rushing on 3 carries, while Gore and Drake combined for 25 yards on 11 carries.  The Dolphins did a great job of masking that deficiency last week, but we all know we have to run the ball much more effectively to stay relevant this season.

Last week with William Hayes out, and of course losing DT Akeem Spence to an ejection, really hurt our run defense.  The remaining players played well in a much shorter rotation, but it will be great to have Spence for 4 quarters, along with whichever DE we choose to promote to the 46 man gameday roster.  The 2018 Patriots don’t really have a feature back, they use a combination of RB/FB Rex Burkhead, Sony Michel and James White, with Burkhead the closest one to resembling Marshawn Lynch, who really ran over us last week.  If not for some timely trickeration, we may have come up short last week.  Not sure how you feel, but I thought if they never took Marshawn out for a breather, he might have had 200 yards.

Sooooo, on to New England. Brady gets a new receiver, and this guy is a very talented one at that.  Don’t short Josh Gordon talent wise.  Judgement wise, maturity wise, you can kill the guy, but this guy has top 10 receiver talent.  The Patriots offense has been easy to defend this year, and the Lions gave one effective blueprint last week on how to tame the Pats offense, double Gronk, and see if the other guys can beat you.  Last week they did not, but adding Josh Gordon changes that somewhat.  I don’t know how much of the playbook Gordon can absorb, or if he cares to absorb it, but when he’s on the field, he has to be respected.  Julian Edelman remains suspended for this game, so we have to cover 7/11 Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and occasionally Cordarrelle Patterson.  I think the Patriots will use James White a lot in the passing game.  He and Dion Lewis used to take turns ripping off big chunks against us, so we have to be disciplined.  White, incidentally leads the Patriots in receptions with 14.

Ted Larsen has go to play better, and this O-line in general needs to be more physical.  We need to give Drake and Gore running lanes, we didn’t give them anything last week. Don’t expect those trick plays this week to bail us out.  We’re going have to play them better straight up, so that might mean Devante Parker getting a little more involved, as well as TE Mike Gesicki.  Dont’a Hightower is a very good LB, but he can’t run with Gesicki.  I think it’s time for Gesicki to get more involved.

On defense, we need to stay focused on James White, and Phillip Dorsett.  They will use Dorsett kind of like how we’re using Albert Wilson, in space, near the LOS, and letting him use his speed to get yardage.  Of course Gronk is main focal point, and we;ve yet to find the right personnel to limit him, but my hopes are that Minkah Fitzpatrick helps in that regard.  It would be great to have Reshad Jones back this week, he’s questionable at the moment with a shoulder injury.  This would be an ideal game to have 3 safeties in there, so here’s hoping Reshad can go on Sunday.

Remember the date,  September 30, 2018.  The day the Dolphins started a new streak of Dolphins victories in Foxboro.  I think the Dolphins are going to win this game, in a closely fought, back and forth battle.  We really show our mettle here, and the rookie kicker, Jason Sanders, after being iced by Belichick, puts through a 40-something yard kick for the game winner and huge fist-pump.

  1. Anyways, said my piece, and I repeat, I’m fine where we are right now. I just don’t see a need to bitch about Landry and money when he never got anything, and he’s not here now. . I’d much prefer focusing on going 4-0.
This game is HUGE, lol. Think about it, a win puts us up a whopping 3 games over the cheats, in only 4 weeks!
As long as We don’t falter down the stretch, or get a horrible injury somewhere that hurts us, We are in great shape to win the East if We take game 4.
If We don’t win it, We are still in decent shape, just need to beat the cheats when they come south to get a 1-1 split

So Tanny gets credit for two hand offs for TDs which completely inflated a very mediocre stat line

    Rock,
I never claimed it was a running play.

Um, read both your statements and get back to me.

The fuck you was for saying it was my job to gobble Tannehill’s balls.

    Rock,
Well, he did hand the ball off, but I completely understand and accept that they are considered passes because the other player was in front of him. It was still a hand off or a toss and not really what anyone would consider a pass.

But hey….my bad. It was my fault.

But debating a stat every QB gets credit for in the league. Mahomes has 4 of them I believe and nobody is taking them away from him.

  7. One of My concerns going into the cheats game is our DL injuries. This cuts into our rotation that was working well. It’s next Man up, and hopefully We are able to stuff their run game, and pressure Brady relentlously and make him cough up some turnovers.
Minkah pick 6 this week would be an incredible morale boost for everyone. Cheats are dysfunctional, but Will come out swinging. We have to match their intensity, and our skills will outshine theirs. They have about half of the playmakers We have, they miss Amendola, lol

David – Not to re-hash what was said, but we paid Landry his rookie NFL contract. Not sure how you arrived at we paid him peanuts for his services. When it came to contract negotiations, we offered him according to reports around $13M per year, which of course paled in comparison to the offer of over $15M that CLE offered him, way above market value due to an excess in salaray cap available. We were trying to lower our salaries, yet still offered him a thoroughly fair $13M per. He decided to DIE in Cleveland with his money. No blame can, or should be attached to the Miami Dolphins. Now fuck Landry, that turncoat lying little bitch! He was a guy I rooted for when he was here, but now he’s dead (LOL) to me in (CLE). 🙂

    • Why were we trying to lower our salaries, can’t get lower than min wage?, the salaries that needed lowering were Suh and Pouncey.
I am aware of what happened with Landry, and said I was ok with where We are. But he isn’t here, and We never paid him anything that could be lowered, so I see nothing to bitch about. But I see plenty that He could bitch about.
He’s unhappy and bitching now, not 4 years previous, why? Rhetorical

Mike, it’s all good. Not many backs run people over like BeastMode. He’s one of a kind.

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

My larger point wasn’t that they weren’t technically throws or that Tannehill doesn’t get credit for them. The point was, if you’re going to use stats to say how well he played…and even suggest that he’s an elite QB because the stats say so….then I can point out that those stats were gained, in large part, by 2 plays where he had very little to do with the success of those plays. Is that irrational on my part? I mean, after his INTs people do backflips in an effort to claim they weren’t his or shouldn’t be considered to be on him. Isn’t that part of looking at stats and evaluating what they really mean or what really took place?
    ****
I didn’t really think that was all that controversial. I forgot we were talking about Tannehill.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s funny that any QB gets credit for a shovel pass, or a screen pass, but that’s how they do it. I guess the receiver gets credit for it too, so it doesn’t really matter.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We got back in the game on Tannehill’s arm. We won with those razzle dazzle plays. Speed kills!!!

I made the point yesterday, when the Pats or Brady do stuff like that all people say is the Pats win again. Brady doesn’t get dissected like we do to Tannehill. Brady has lived off of dumping the ball to small quick guys and letting them do the rest. And getting the ball to Gronk who is a beast. At the end of the day winning is all that matters and so far all of our wins have been team wins and making plays when we needed to.

That’s how the Pats dynasty has been doing it for over a decade. I’m glad we’re borrowing their blue print. Now go use it against them this Sunday. 🙂

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I asked earlier without using stats, how has Fitzpatrick outplayed RT17?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because Fitzbeard has thrown for over 400 yards three straight games and a bunch of TDs. The guy has played out of his mind despite the last game where he turned it over too much and they lost. Does anyone think this is going to continue though?

For me Tannehill is buying into Gase’s vision like every other player on the team and they’re winning together, and I’m absolutely fine with that. Big stats don’t always equate to big success as we all know.

  25. Mike, as fas as Your question of Landrys pay, it was a second round rookie contract for 4 years, and it was the very minimum the NFL allows, this minimum wage. It’s not like the federal minimum wage of 7 bucks or whatever, lol but around 420,000 a year to 500,000.

Compare that to Suh 60 MILLION guaranteed and it’s easy to see an enormous discrepancy,
2 million times 30 equals 60 Million, so We has to pay Landrys pay 30 times over for Suh. That’s enough to make someone upset they aren’t getting their fare share, not to mention that shitty ass Cutler getting 10 million for half a putrid season leaving us with Matt Moore.
We should be bitching about Cutler, he made all that money and barely did anything

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why bitch about any of them? They are all gone and we’re 3-0. 🙂

    • Just tried to answer Your question, but again, He’s not here now, We are doing great! So I don’t wish to keep discussing players that aren’t here, when the ones that are here, are going to make some noise,! Go Miami! Miami 31- cheat 18 is My prediction.
My predictions are never right, lol but many times close

  27. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

QBs are over paid. Everyone knows this.
Why on earth should Landry think he’s the level at his position that Suh was? Is isn’t and never will be. Suh has dominated games, Landry never will.

Suh earned his checks and is a vet. Landry on his rookie deal had proven nothing as a draft pick. They have a rookie scale and you play for that first FA contract.

  28. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Maybe after 13 games the Dolphins can do this!

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Instead of screen, run, dump off to Drake, I hope we come out slinging it down the field against the Pats and challenge them from the get go. I want to attack their questionable speed on defense right away with our speed. That could open up everything else.

  30. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Landry played out his rooki contract, no bitching, played head. Miami offered him what they willing to pay him based on his demonstrated skill set. He went to a team offering more money. No issues with any of that. No issues with anything that went before he started badmouthing Tannehill and Miami. At that point, fuck Landry.

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ER,
Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1200 yards, 11 TDs and 70% completions. Tannehill has thrown for 687 yards, 7 TDs at a 73% completion percentage. Fitzpatrick has clearly outplayed Tannehill statistically. So, to my point, does that mean Fitzpatrick is elite because of his stats? I don’t think he is, and it shows that stats just don’t tell the whole story.

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We start out with a couple of quick TDs and a 14-0 lead, then the Pets get a FG early in the 2nd quarter. A few drives later, Brady will throw a ball that bounces off the receiver and is returned by the Fins for a pick 6. Fins lead at halftime 21-3.

2nd half the Fins get a little sloppy as the Pets mount a furious comeback. The Pets get two TDs, then in the early 4th they get a cheap TD off a Tanny INT. Meanwhile we manage 2 FGs which leads to a final score of 27-24.

Fins win to move to 4-0, we have a 3 game divisional lead over the Pets with the tiebreaker advantage pushing it to 4.

And as an added bonus, the Cleveland Landrys lose in Oakland.

  34. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think the first play should start with Drake and Gore in the backfield, Stills and Parker on the outside, Grant in the slot. Play action, throw deep to Stills or Grant on go routes.

Soooo, I had this crazy dream last night, I wasn’t going to put it on here, but what the hell. First of all because I’d have to admit, I actually dreamed about football!!!! WTF????? 2nd, it wasn’t about the Dolphins, no, it was Bill Belichick and Tom Brady….again…WTF???? But it’s the week we play the Patriots, so why not?

I don’t really remember details, I rarely remember dreams at all. But this one was so crazy…basically the gist of it was that Brady had told Belichick that this would be his last year, he wanted to try and win a superbowl without cheating, just once, so he could retire and have the idea he could have won the other ones without cheating. Bill wanted no part of it, caused a rift between them and that’s behind what’s going on with the Patriots this year, Brady is trying it without cheating! I don’t know or don’t remember how it is that I was in the position to find all this out, anything can happen in a dream, I know it was like I was at work, in my office here, but I had access to these videos and transcripts of them talking, but it wasn’t like I was watching a video, it was like I had seen it…..crazy dream stuff, it doesn’t have to make sense or doesn’t seem weird to you in the dream, just when you wake up and you think, well that’s stupid how would that even happen in the first place and what in the hell are you doing dreaming about those two????

    Crazy

    Go Dolphins!

  36. Miami Wash tied 10-10 in the fourth, did Suh return a punt for the winning touchdown, no, he was on the sidelines counting his money while Landry won the game, lol

  37. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  38. Watching thenLandry vid, all there is to see is this scrappy guy fighting for every inch to help this team win. If You forgot, it’s there.
He wasn’t perfect, but he’s not hot garbage like it seems it’s portrayed, after he got shipped to Cleveland.
I’m just giving the guy his due while he was here that’s all, a lot of Fin Fans loved the guy, myself included.
I sure like him a lot more than Devante Parker, SMH first round pick and barely anything out of him. We should have selected Bud Dupree instead of Parker.
But this team has a chemistry that we can’t disrupt. Im sure Landry would do well if he was here and Stills, Grant, and Wilson taking coverage. Many times Landry was double covered, who can double cover Miamis receivers now? They will lose!

David – All players play through their rookie contracts unless they’re exceptional. He got paid what he should have gotten paid. As to Suh, not sure how you can compare Suh to Landry, other than they both left their teams when they became free agents and signed with a different team for a boatload of money. So now Landry IS like Suh, he wanted the money, he got it, and he will probably be miserable career wise playing in CLE, like Suh was probably miserable here in MIA. Hopefully, the millions of dollars can console the both of those guys. 🙂

  57. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think those numbers are pretty much par for the course in today’s NFL….under 200 yards and 1 TD….come on, what’s so special about that? The league has changed. With how it’s officiated and called. QB ratings simply don’t mean what they did. That said, I never claimed Tanny didn’t play well last week. In fact, I’m pretty sure I said he did. My argument was with this whole idea that in 3 games he has shown that he is elite or a top 3 QB and that his stats indicated that.

And with that, I’ve had my Tannehill quota. People read waaaay too much into my thoughts on him and my emotional state. Lol

When you’re a know Ryan hater you’re read as if everything positive is followed by a but… You may have said he played well, but then you followed it up with negatives, so again an implied but.

Not trying to bash you just trying to say it like it is.

  58. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    from Joe Schad:
Here is some of what Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a conference call with South Florida media on Tuesday:

    • Ryan Tannehill is doing well in pretty much everything. Start with 73 percent completions. He handles a lot at the line of scrimmage. He can get the team into the right plays. He’s making good decisions in the option game and on who to throw the ball to. They have a lot of confidence in him.

    • Coach Gase does an excellent job attacking defenses. He can modify his scheme from week to week based on perceived weaknesses. He’s got a lot of good receivers. He’s got guys who can run and throw. He does a really good job of creating difficult schemes. As good as anybody we’ve faced. They’re a hard team to prepare for. There are going to be things we won’t have prepared for. There will be new wrinkles. They create explosive plays.

    • Those trick plays could come up any week. We don’t know when they’re going to come up. They’re used infrequently which is why they can be so explosive and dangerous. We have to be alert for those plays. Coach Gase is a very creative coach. Everybody has to handle their responsibilities. They can catch you on a play they have not seen before. If Albert Wilson, Jakeem Grant, Kenyan Drake or Kenny Stills gets a step, they’re gone.

    • This is a well-balanced team. They hit you on sweeps and short catch-and-runs. They get to the perimeter. If you don’t stop them it could be a long run for a long gain. They make you defend every inch of the field.

    • On Josh Gordon, I don’t know. We’ll have to see how it goes.

    • I don’t know why Miami doesn’t win here. I’m trying to do a better job with my team. Coach Gase doesn’t need any help from me. Those other games don’t matter.

    • Danny Amendola did a good job for us. He’s tough, smart, dependable. He played his best football in critical situations and in big games.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not sure why this is news, he says the same type of shot every week, for the last 18 years. He wants his team to take nothing fo granted and play every week like they’re the under dog.

I’m not talking about you Naples, but the guy that wrote it

I loved this read. Tanny and Gase have proven to be a productive combination, and I really like the comparison to Rich Gannon who put up his best numbers in the latter half of his career.

  60. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,
That’s cool. I realize my opinion is in the minority. I have no problem with that. I have always evaluated players more harshly than most. I also feel I’m pretty fair and accurate most of the time. I don’t hate Tannehill by any stretch of the imagination. I actually like the way he handles himself as a pro. It’s not a Tannehill exclusive. He’s just the one that it seems to bug people the most about. I root for him just as much as every other player on the team each week. I hope he ends my doubts by the end of the year.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I dont doubt any of that and I’m with you on the flip passes for TDs, just like I said about Mahomes, who has about 4 of those tds.

I have one issue with Ryan, his inability to convert 3rd downs. Its like we have issues on 3rd and 5, but on D I wince when we have them in 3rd and 15.

Randy – I get what you’re saying and I don’t think you’re bashing RT. Three games in, anything can happen. Hell…I think you’ve been almost ebullient in your praise for RT, for you.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

And I missed half the argument earlier. LOL

He’ll never be a Rodgers, but how many teams have a QB like that? 3 or 4? If RT17 has really turned the corner now with Gase, it’s going to be fun times ahead.

      GO FINS

  62. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Phish,
Ebullient is exactly how I was feeling. Lol

  63. Here is the Tannehill stat that matters the most IMO
The Dolphins have won 10 out of the last 11 games RT started. And that single loss wasn’t this year.
I’ll take the wins over any flashy yardage totals.
I like the way he manages games,
He is still an unfinished piece of work, that is still improving IMO

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not about the yards, it’s about keeping drives alive. He seems to do it with the game on the line, just waiting for it to come more frequently. Once he becomes dangerous on 3rd down we’ll dominate.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

He has made plays this year to win/ seal the game. Before Gase it just didn’t happen. Hope to see more of it and sprinkle in total game dominations too.

  64. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

What’s Josh Gordon done in the NFL since 2013? Literally, that was 5 seasons ago, and he’s missed most of them on suspension. Players don’t often come back from a year off, and Josh failed in his attempt to come back from 5 seasons off.

My point? We have 2 CB that can cover this guy one on one. That still frees us up to double Gronk.

Patriots still scare me. They’re the Pats we’ve all come to hate until they aren’t. On paper, we’re a better team, but I still got nervous reading Mike’s wish for a team that looks like it belongs on the field with the Pats. I think we could get blown out and still win the division, or blow them out and still lose it. Football is a high variance game. Some days the ball bounces your way, other days it reminds you it’s oblong and bounces against you.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe you didnt see him play the opener, hes only got 1 catch for 17 yards for a big TD late, but Brady can make this guy look better than Tyrod can.

  65. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

If Tannehill throws a screen pass that gets taken to the house it’s seen similarly to the way some want to discount that little flip. I say what’s the point? Some people will argue he’s average until they don’t. Then they’ll say they were right all along but his recent play has shown he’s changed from his average ways.

Whatever. Enjoy good QB play folks. We don’t get enough of it in South Florida!

  66. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Watching RT17 presser…..

Him saying how Gase yelled at him for that stutter step before going out of bounds and he says its football, you gotta play it.

    Cue Terrell Owens……That’s my quarterback.

    GO FINS

  74. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Baker hasn’t played many snaps, being the 3rd LB, which may be a good thing, because it gives the coaches a chance to work with him during the game. Put him in situations ideal for his skillset, then take him out when it’s not ideal or to give him a breather, so he’s fresh. No reason to burn him out, when someone like Chase is better on run downs.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No question they need to be wired in, their strength is in numbers playing very good together, not a few superstars, that make a play when they feel like it.

VERY premature of Wingfield, IMO. While I very much enjoy his optimism, we’ll have only gotten past the 1/4 mark of the season. ANYTHING could happen after that… including devastating injuries to any and all 32 teams.

This is just about the Pets consistency and mystique. If you took this season in a vacuum, compared the tapes, and made a decision, it would be Dolphins across the board.

When we win in semi-dominating fashion this weekend, we’ll start getting some of the respect we deserve. There will still be plenty of pundits who will make excuses, but we’re already starting to see some heads turning our way. More will follow.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well I guess it’s road game within the division

So as a matter of habit, if I was an unbiased person – it would be logical to pick the home team

But all of them? That’s based on what you are saying. It’s just general expectation that the patriots are the same team they were in 2017 and the Dolphins are the same team they were in 2017

The vast majority of “experts” are blowhards who don’t spend the time researching the teams

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s probably just too much reverence for the Patriots, that they have to go back to being the patriots we know and hate. I get it, I feel it myself. As long as you have Belichick and Brady, there’s always potential for them to get it right.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I mean I was worried that a desperate Raiders team might give us a good fight, and they did, so why not a desperate Patriots team at home?

They were mentioning this during the game last week, Patriots game i mean. They said that the yars that the Pats get off to a slow start are usually the ones that the get things righted and storm back. I hope we are still on the downhill side of their turn around. Really dont want to be the statement game opponent. Oh and despite being a extremely loyal Dolphins fan, i have a lot of appreciation for how good that team, that QB and that coach have been for so long. You cant deny they run an effective system over there.
