2018 Season – Game 10 – Dolphins @ Packers

I was watching Good Morning Football this morning on NFLN, and after showing highlights of the Panthers vs Bucs (42-28), and Saints vs Rams (45-35), yeah, it looks pretty wrong seeing 13-6, Dolphins over Jets.  Kay Adams and Kyle Brandt presented it as a good ole 1990’s defensive struggle, a throwback.  They got it all wrong, this wasn’t a defensive struggle, it was an offensive struggle.  Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold didn’t get the memo that his team was wearing the white jerseys, because he threw better passes to the dark jerseys than he did to the white jerseys.  If you want to credit our pass rush, which actually existed yesterday, feel free to do so.  On our side, we couldn’t block (run or pass), we got one defensive TD and two FG’s.  Light it up!

I’m not singling anyone out here, but our O-line play was just terrible, and of course as per usghe, injuries were the reason for this.  Both tackles missed time in this game forcing Zach Sterup to man both the RT spot when James was hurt, and then slide over to the LT spot when James came back in and Laremy Tunsil got hurt.  So now Brock Osweiler, who I will say has better pocket awareness than Ryan Tannehill has ever had, has no pocket awareness because players were on him in 1 second or less.  Our O-line isn’t good with all our starters in there, but subtract one of our tackles, who are our 2 best OL, Tunsil #1, James #2, it really goes downhill.

I don’t want to knock the optimists here, because it’s wonderful that fans can still believe we’re in this, but I laugh inside  (a sad laugh) when fans say “Oh, not good, the Chargers won, gonna be tough to catch them”.  From what I have seen this year, we don’t belong on the same field as the Chargers, they score 28 PPG, and we’ve scored more just once this year, in OT, and never more in regulation.  We’ve had injuries, but we still have Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Jakeem Grant, David Amendola, and Mike Gesicki.  We have Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake, a formidable 1-2 punch, yet our offense is putrid.  Yeah, we’re 5-4, easily the worst 5-4 team in the NFL.  We’re the only 5-4 team.

My guess is we’re probably going to have Brock Osweiler as QB one more time as we hit the BYE week, and then after the BYE, it will be Ryan Tannehill’s team once again.  We travel this week to Wisconsin to take on the Packers in their house.  This is an angry Pack team, having lost to the Patriots in Foxboro.  Anyone know who the OC is for GB?  Tee-hee, it’s Joe Philbin.  Not even kidding.  Possibly, this explains how the GB Packers are only scoring 24 PPG, just a few more than our Dolphins.  Hey, is it bad that Saints WR Michael Thomas accounted for more yardage and scoring by himself with 211 yards and 1 TD, while we accumulated as a team 203 yards and no TD’s?

It’s easy for Belichick to do whatever he wants, he’s beyond reproach at this point, no one questions the master.  How smart does he look using Cordarrelle Patterson as a RB?  Can we get some of that ingenuity from our offensive genius Adam Gase?  Don’t bet on it.    I wish he would read this and it would inspire him, but I won’t bet on that either!  I wish something would inspire him, maybe keeping his job, something like that.

I know Toba, Bookman and ER are attending the GB game, I hope they enjoy and I hope our team gives them a great game to watch and a Dolphins victory!  Enjoy fellas, way to represent!

It’s tough being a Dolphins fan, but we must persevere maybe the light will come on in GB.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t expect to beat the Packers. That would be a shocker.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Me either, but the Pack are not firing on all cylinders, they look a little off. Still, a very tough ask to beat them in GB

Im counting on sweeping the Bills and im thinking we take one from either the Jags or Colts, i can smell the 8-8 already…. smells like sadness and oppression!

Well NFL.com just picked up the Jones story. Here comes some wonderful reporter drama

While watching the Saints run up and down the field, scoring at will, the announcers were singing the praises of Jeff Ireland. I was laughing my ass off.

Looking at the 10 day forecast, Green Bay is supposed to have a high of 32 on game day. With an afternoon game it will be colder. Think Oz throws a shitty ball now? Just wait until he has to throw in sub freezing temps. It hurts to think about it.

  7. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I’m considering sacrificing some goats and chickens in hopes that Gase has that offensive epiphany.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Offense sucked, but — not that the O was good — no way we could have won the two games before way the D played. And they showed up strong.

  8. D's avatar D says:

You know, embarassing losses and wins that dont impress aside, our team is a dysfunctional mess. That shit rides squarely on the coach. We have had this issue all three years Gase has been here and its starting to be something that makes me feel Gase is never going to get the ship righted. I completely believe he gets a 4th year, and im pretty sure if he at least starts the move on from Tanny process he will get an additional one, but im not sure the guy will do more than waste two more years for us. Things do not seem to be in any way solidifying with him leading our team. Im not saying he isnt an ok coach, but he just doesnt seem to fit things here very well. Maybe our franchise is the problem, but shit just is all kinda chaotic and discombobulated.

All hail Mike E — not just for another great article but for absolutely crushing it this weekend.in the FU FF league run by Toba Not that have kept track, but must have been the highest game ever in the 3 years of the league by 20+ points.

    Every game has a momement

When Gase was on the bench trying to come up with a play or two
    I’m almost died laughing

This guy is trying to come up with a 50 yard play to bail us out of is miserable offense?!?!
We aren’t one big play away!

What if he comes up with a play that works and we score one TD?
So what we punt 8 times instead of 9
Gase thinks running an offense is like playing the lottery
He keeps trying to hit the big play
Some consistency on offense would be nice

I think a lot of coaches around the league would be embarrassed to be seen trying to come up with a play on the sideline like that

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Still don’t know what Jones pulling himself from the game was all about?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I doubt we’ll ever get the truth, but Wake appears to be in Reshad’s corner, whatever that’s worth. It seems Reshad was pissed he was pulled off the field a couple of times in the defensive rotation, and I think he’s earned the right to be on the field at all times.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Thanks Stanger, ER!

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write, Mike. No QB looks like they have good pocket awareness when there is no pocket.

  16. D's avatar D says:

You should have your best guys one the field as much as you can, and it not be detrimental to the team. Minkah has brought it up, though ill stop short of calling it complaining. Jones now. Sounds like Wake has some issues with it. A true pro like Jones knows when he needs to come out, so i think im on his side as well. I know the coaches make the necessary rotations when they feel like its the right time, but again, who would take a guy like Jones off the field unless he just absolutely needs to.

  17. Ken's avatar Ken says:

If O Rob is right Jones should be benched if not cut. I love Jones and he is a great player but no player is above the coach. He doesn’t agree with the rotation then too bad especially when it’s working. It’s coaching decision when to rest a player. Maybe he wanted him fresh for a tight game in the 4th quarter

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      What info. did ORob have?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Jones took himself out because he was unhappy with the substitution rotation in the first half that left him and some other starters on the bench for a couple of series

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont agree with it. You play your best players, if they havent done anything to deserve some pine time or if they arent in obvious need of a break, Ie they signal to rotate, you leave them out there, especially a unit leader like Jones.

      • D's avatar D says:

That said i dont know that i agree with Jones handling of it, but thats also the part of this story that doesnt seem clear at all.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

There are lots of reasons to rotate even your best players especially when you want to keep them fresh in a tight game. That is the coach’s job to decide that

      • D's avatar D says:

Im with Mike i think Gase has no control over this team and the player surley arent responding to him.You coul call out the players, ut these arent the same players that caused problems, he supposedly got rid of them, and yet here we are again. To me all the parts around him are changing and yet we stay in the same place. The only part that hasnt change is him, so its not a really good look for him as a coach.

  18. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

The Packers have not lost at home this year (1 tie though) The last time the Dolphins visited GB was in 2010, the Packers went 7-1 at home….the only loss was to the Henne led Dolphins. It will take some special efforts to win in GB this year with the way the Dolphins are playing, particularly offensively….but you never know……….Beat the Pack!!!!

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks, Ken. Lots of players get subbed in and out every week. I don’t see the big deal or why Jones would then say just keep me out. That’s not very team oriented.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How many times do we have to see this to realize there’s a problem with the HC? I swear it’s a freaking Joe Philbin flashback. It wasn’t Joe’s fault, it was the players fault. Now it’s not Adam Gase’s fault, it’s the players fault. Whatever he’s doing, he’s not communicating or reaching the players the right way. Should we just cut the whole roster until everyone agrees with the way he does things? Gase better get on top of this and fix it quick.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      It’s deja vu

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This was actually between Burke and Jones, not Gase. But I’m not sure why you’re taking the position you are. We sub guys in an out all the time. Why is Jones above that?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe because I’m tired of this team having problems with players every freaking week. OK, just cut Reshad now, add him to the list of mutineers. Soon there won’t be enough players to field a team. Aren’t you about fed up with this garbage?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What are you referring to every week? Jones isn’t going to get cut. I think you’re overreacting to this. Nothing Gase has said about the Jones situation leads me to believe he’s angry with him. He even said a lot got cleared up last night and he’ll play agains the Packers.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Mando is reporting Jones took himself out

I would say that’s pretty inconosistent with the Jones we have known over the years

How many of our best players have expressed some frustration with this organization recently
It’s kind of an ugly trend

    I can think of:
    Jones
    Phillips
    Suh
    Landry
    Ajayi
    Parker

    It’s happening a lot

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right Piggy – Look one post up ^

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Don’t remember too much talk from Suh. The last 3 all are big for their britches and I don’t actually care what they have to say. The ugly trend in general in the NFL is for players to leave one team then bad mouth them when they get somewhere else. See Demaryus Thomas’ quote yesterday after the Houston game.

This was just regular frustration and it can be sorted. No need for us to over-read it.

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – If it’s Burke that’s the issue, I’d sooner they fire him than cut Reshad. Reshad has been a bright spot on this defense years. Burke??? Negative

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s not getting cut. Where are you getting that from? The defensive coaches have a right to sub players. So do the offensive coaches. They do it all the time. I don’t get what the big deal is other than Jones taking himself out of the game. That’s what is being reported anyway.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, but the question is why did Reshad Jones take himself out? Whether they cut him, don’t cut him, why must there always be dysfunction with our team?

  23. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We don’t even know what happened with Reshad yet….. but yeah the lack of that is a concern. Guessing if a “shoulder was tweaked” answer is put out, will still only be part of the story. Flip side is if he didn’t like not getting 100% of the snaps when they tried to get more for Minkah….. time for him to biotch about it on Monday.

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This is why you need coaches who can work with all sorts of players…not just “his guys”….because that’s never going to happen. On a 53 man roster, they will never all be your type of guy. A good coach figures out how to work with different personalities.
    ***
I am pretty pissed if Jones took himself….and kept himself out….due to playing time. That is complete BS. That said, if you are going to do this as a coach, you go to your veteran guys, specifically, during the week and tell them what’s gonna happen. You get your guys on board with it before you just pull it during the game. If that didn’t happen, I can understand Jones’ issue, but I still don’t agree with taking yourself out of a game. That’s bush league.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They are probably going to keep this in-house.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  26. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I think that’s a bit drastic to cut a multi-time probowl safety if he protested by sitting out a snap. I guess it’s a little hypocritical of me, but when the GB player returned the ball from the end zone with the game in the balance when he was told to take a knee, he risked the game for his entire team and he deserved to be cut. I don’t know the whole story, but Jones is a long time Dolphin, and he’s been here longer then Gase, I think Gase needs to have a man to man with him and they should work their shit out.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

haha…just post this then read the post above it….lol…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of speculating going on and it doesn’t seem to be as bad as some are making it out to be. But like I said, not sure we’re going to find out exactly what went on as they will keep it in-house.

  27. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

How many times do we have to see this to realize there’s a problem with the HC? I swear it’s a freaking Joe Philbin flashback. It wasn’t Joe’s fault, it was the players fault. Now it’s not Adam Gase’s fault, it’s the players fault.

    ______________________________________
Mike, just a thought, how many iterations does it have to be before it’s the players that are the common denominator and not the coaches?

I heard Pat Kirwan the other day ask a fan who was frustrated with their HC: Ask yourself this: How would the Steelers handle this situation?

The answer is they’d be supremely patient, they’re the only organization in the NFL that doesn’t resort to the reset button….ever really.

  28. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I guess I’m in the minority here. I don’t think our team is very good and I love the ugly win. 5-4 nine games in for a team that Vegas had winning 6 all year. I guess I just had more modest expectations from this years’ team then many.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we’re very good either. But I would have liked to see us roll with the OL we had penciled in at the start of the season and Hayes and Wilson still in the mix. Those losses really hurt is. Oh yeah Tannehill too. Covers his head from getting debris thrown at him. LOL

Sometimes teams get into a groove as they build chemistry and become a better a team as the season goes on. But when key players keep going down and you have to keep switching things up, it’s not easy to do. I think we all wish our fortunes would change for once.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

With all the changes last off season…. was never really about this year. Still have a team good enough not to be taken for granted though. My new prediction is 2nd in the AFC East. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think the 3-0 start built some expectations. And yeah enjoyed watching the ugliness in the win as well. My prediction was 8-8 on the season, and that came with the homer one more win push plus before all the injuries.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Jahn

No offense, but comparing Gase to Mike Tomlin isn’t right, only that at least at the moment, they are both NFL HC’s. Tomlin hasn’t had a losing season as a HC. When/if Gase wins here a while, I’ll give him that same benefit of the doubt.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I wasn’t Mike. I was comparing the Steelers way of looking at coaches and continuity to the rest of the league.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know it’s easier to stay the course when you win but other teams who don’t reset often are obviously the Pats, Packers, Saints, Seahawks, Ravens, Panthers and even the Bengals and Cowboys. They create a culture and keep building on it.

We recently had discussions about this a couple of weeks ago. Even during disappointing seasons some of these teams stay the course.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tomlin also took over a team one year removed from winning a Super Bowl and a future HOF QB in Big Ben. Cowher had built a good foundation to work with.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Jahn – The Steelers as an organization are light years better than us. Not sure if it’s due to the ownership, the front office, but whatever coach they bring in is a winner, and that makes it easy to stick with the status quo. The Dolphins just can’t even get to the point where we start winning and then continue that. A lot has to do with identifying the right QB, which have yet to do.

  31. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So happy they changed the celebration rules…. it is entertainment after all.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6QW_MMAvh4

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think you stay the course if you feel like you have the right guy. I’m struggling to find reasons to feel that way about Gase. I know we’ve had some injuries, but that doesn’t account for all the dysfunction we’ve seen. Then, you look at his offense and you wonder what the heck has he established in 3 years? I’m all for sticking with a guy, but after 3 years I’m not so sure Gase is that guy.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well Gase has had to start 5 different QBs in just over 2.5 seasons. That might have something to with it. Also we still can’t keep a starting 5 OL on the field for more than a few weeks. It’s unreal. Every team has injuries on the OL but our situation has been absurd.

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d be willing to give Gase another season here, if we draft a QB, sign a placeholder QB, hopefully someone that is willing to throw the ball downfield, which apparently excludes the 2 QB’s we have now in Tannehill and Osweiler. I can’t bear to watch another season. I guess what I need to find out is, is it the QB’s (Tannehill and Osweiler), or is it Adam Gase and his offense.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – The Niners started a guy at QB that barely took any practice, their 3rd string QB who never played an NFL game, and they managed to put up 34 points that week. I try and give Gase that excuse, but look over at the other team in FLA, the Bucs. Their 2 QB’s have nearly double the TD passes we have. I don’t know what it is about Gase, it’s like he doesn’t trust his QB’s, and I think they manage the game that way, way too careful.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That was one game against a Raiders team that has quit.

Tannehill threw the ball down the field more successfully than Osweiler has. We haven’t seen any long TD passes in the air since the Stills 75 and 34 yarders.

However, I do think Gase is concerned with the 5 and 7 step drops because the OL hasn’t consistently shown they can protect it. I think that’s part of the reason.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Raiders were 0-2 when we played them, I think they quit before the season. The big difference is they had Marshawn Lynch, who gave us some trouble. I would really like Gase to get Parker and Gesicki involved in the offense too. I understand being concerned by it, but he’s consumed by it. It’s wide open league, take a freaking chance! If the CB breathes on the receiver they call a penalty, give it a shot!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Osweiler has thrown the ball down the field. He just misses most of the time. Our receivers including Drake have drawn PI calls a few times.

Parker has been more involved the last couple of weeks. Gesicki is having trouble getting open. I didn’t expect a big season from him his rookie season. I thought he’d do more than he has, but I don’t think that’s about Gase not going to him, that’s on the QBs. If he’s open he gets the ball, if he’s not they’re not going to throw it to him.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Setting aside the injury issue, he still does stuff that just doesn’t appear very smart or competitive. We’ve had a very undisciplined team his whole time here. It’s lots of stuff for me that really has nothing to do with injuries. I’m not saying he has to go now, but he needs to start showing he can build a winning team.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He needs to show he can handle players too, communicate and work with them, not just send them packing when they don’t listen.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed but don’t the injuries to key players hamper building a winning team? At the end of the day, like you say most of the time it’s about talent and the players. This team is not playing with the full deck they started with. Then when you have typical injuries like every team suffers in games during the season you keep getting thinner and thinner.

Regardless of what it is, at the end of the day Gase will be evaluated on wins and losses and Ross will decide at some point if it’s not good enough.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems the Phins aren’t the only ones with unhappy folks on the roster, including one person who used to be on it.

“Chargers are releasing kicker Caleb Sturgis……The move comes less than 24 hours after Sturgis received death glares from Rivers throughout a game in which he missed two extra points and a field goal. It was his first game back since a strained quad sidelined him in week 5.”

  37. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

There are rumblings already coming out about players getting tired of Osweiler’s accuracy issue…. he’s terrible at anything on the move or over 10 yards.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rumblings for sure from me watching the game yesterday. Gotta be able to hit guys like Drake, Grant, etc on the move in this offense. And a lot of the misses had nothing to do with pressure.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are there, any reports on that?

What this offense really needs is a consistent running game but it’s very up and down. Not just game to game, but within a game. That would help sustain more drives and that usually results in more points. Even yesterday we lined up big needing a yard and Gore was hit 2 yards in the backfield.

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Speaking of Parker, he has more giddy up in his legs then I’ve seen in quite some time. He’s been close a few times to breaking runs after the catch just getting tripped up before he takes off. I think it’s coming though.

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

LOL, they will not cut Jones, he’s guaranteed 33 mil, you going to eat that with nothing in return?
they may trade him in the off season though if he keeps his nonsense up.

  40. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Last question or so of presser today asked about switching up offense or something…

Gase responds “who do we have left?” LOL

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, the only players sent packing for not listening were Ajayi and Phillips. And Phillips was more about work ethic and complaining about playing time. The defensive coaches tried to work with him but they grew tired of him not responding. Landry, Suh and Pouncey were all about money. Gabe Wright a borderline player to make the team was released for punching Drake in the face in practice. The OL who were released was because of dreadful performance.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Suh was about money, no question, but how many times did we hear that he was freelancing during a game? Now we hear Reshad Jones is upset. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Burke or Gase, Gase is the HC. He should have been on the Reshad situation at the half. Why didn’t he know about it during the game? Ajayi I defended him for, but now I’m beginning to wonder if I should have,

Be honest – Do you think the greater majority of players on this team are with Gase, that they like him, respect him, and think he’s the right guy to take them to a championship? I don’t see it that way. I don’t think he has this team’s pulse, and I don’t think they play hard for him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know the ultimate answer to that other than the team has said all offseason they like Gase, he’s personable and the team feels like a family. I think too much is being made of it. Jones went to Gase and he said they’re on the same page. I think Jones is the one to ask.

Nobody on the team other than Jones quit yesterday and the defense looked like they were all on the same page. A lot of guys on defense really balled yesterday. The offense has issues executing we all know that. But nobody quit.

I think the team’s pulse is we’re not at full strength and they are what they are. A mediocre team that has to change things up week to week with injuries mounting every week. You can’t keep taking hits and be the same team. Many players we lost are better than the ones playing.

I know you want to move on from Tannehill moving forward but he’s superior to Osweiler. I don’t care about stats, you can just see it in ability.

To me a lot of this is about how nothing seems to go right with our team whenever it looks promising. It’s years of frustration even though we did get to taste the playoffs just two years ago. Before that there was a 7 year drought and last year sucked. This year at 5-4 and players going down with some rough losses we lack confidence in anything special happening this season. I’m just going with the flow because this team has not had much good fortune and making the playoffs looks slim and would blow us all away if we did. So I take it one game at time. I’m not expecting greatness so anything positive just ride with it as long as we can.

We won yesterday and this is the kind of stuff we focus on during a Monday win day. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh I know we won, but anyone could see it was especially ugly. If Darnold didn’t play so poorly, we could have easily had lost that game too. I know you know that, you watched it too.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our defense should get some credit too. We forced him into playing poorly much of the time. The Jets defense played well too. But neither offense played well at all so there is a balance. Spence played great yesterday and who’s to say he didn’t effect their center Long from struggling with snaps. Spence was shoving him and guards backwards all day. Wake was factor. Other DEs had their moments. The LBs and DBs were flying around all day making open field tackles and contesting passes with tight coverage. You could also say if Osweiler played better it would not have been that close. Not saying we score 30 or anything, but like I said yesterday, maybe 23-6. We left a lot of open plays out there and I don’t think the Jets had as many. Their best drive was two face mask penalties by us and they still didn’t score.

There is no defense for the Dolphins offense. It is truly offensive. Therefore you would think we would score a lot of points……

OK, but the question is why did Reshad Jones take himself out? Whether they cut him, don’t cut him, why must there always be dysfunction with our team?

Because we have crack “reporters” telling tales.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – It gets dark here in NJ about the same as Wisconsin. Doesn’t it darker earlier in FLA after the clock change?

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – You really think coverage is better w/o Reshad? That guy has been playing great this season, he’s made a lot of plays in coverage, as well as the LOS. He has 5 passes defensed and 2 INT’s. I don’t think you’re being completely fair about this. He’s one of our best defensive players, if not the best.

  53. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So it is Jones doing what he did, Gase throwing Burke in there (saying will be more involved with the D) and Burke (who has yet to be heard from). However it turns out guessing Burke is real happy the D gave up 6 and scored 7 without Jones.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – I think Burke is in over his head. Not sure where they go if they let Burke go, but there are a few veteran guys available.

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – That’s true what you just said, it definitely works both ways. Only reason I’m really picking on Darnold was each and every INT was just thrown right to our guy, there were no brilliant play made, just holding on to the ball.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He got baited 3 times with zone coverage. The last one (Aikens) was a last gasp rolling out with limited options. His OL and receivers didn’t help him much either. Like Kearse not knowing where the sideline was. Baker’s was the best INT because he went and got it. That dude is really fast by the way. 🙂

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Burke will be fired this year unless we have more games like DET and HOU down the stretch. The defense needs to build off the way they played against the Jets. Not that the Jets are a powerhouse offense because they aren’t. But the communication was there and much less confusion. Other than the two face mask penalties, they played really clean.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ER, I think the coaches (Burke) are still trying to figure out the best way to utilize McMillan, Baker and Minkah. Baker started the season off not playing in nickel needing to get up to speed and now he is. We can also play more base 4-3 now because of Baker’s speed giving us a guy who’s like an extra DB. How many times have we seen him chase down WRs on big plays to prevent TDs. He’s also starting to cover better. We used him a bunch yesterday off the edge to attack running plays from behind. I really like what I’m seeing from him. McMillan has been up and down but MLB is not an easy position to play for a young guy. He made some nice plays yesterday too. Minkah has been good all year wherever we play him. His role is expanding. He played boundary, slot and safety yesterday. McCain played slot and boundary. When you’re playing that many rooks and young players there is going to be a learning curve for everyone.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

With McMillan, Baker and Alonso…. last thing would be looking for in the next draft up high up. Oddly enough with as deep as the secondary as is….. would put CB above that.

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – CB is definitely high on the list. Tank won’t be back until later in the season next season, and he was struggling anyway. McTyer is probably better as depth, so we really need someone opposite X while Bobby Mac handles the slot

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not 1st RD, but probably before the 4th

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Maybe some depth at LB in the mid rounds or FA. Losing Chase Allen hurt because he played all 3 positions, we used him as big LB against more physical teams and he was a core STs player.

But with Tank having to recover from midseason knee surgery and Lippett not recovering from the Achilles the way we had hoped eventually releasing him, corner has definitely moved up the list.

To me on defense it’s DT, CB and maybe DE depending on how we evaluate the position in the offseason. On offense it’s QB, OL and maybe another big physical WR. With the injuries we’ve had at WR, and calling up Carroo from the PS, has anyone seen him? It’s pretty apparent we busted on him. At least we hit on Grant in the 6th to add a speed element on returns and at WR in that same draft.

  59. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Well if we ever want to have the culture of Pit. or NE we have to have the players do it!
You can’t get it done as a coach, owner, GM!
Wake should have fixed the problem yesterday (If he’s a leader)???????

We have a culture of lunch trey abuse! 😦

  60. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Nobody wants Sam??????

  61. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Definitely either DE or DT should be our first defensive player. It would be nice if Charles Harris gave us an idea if he’s got anything to offer, or if we should move on and draft another one to replace him. We have gotten so little in the year and a half he’s been here.

  62. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Spence played a great game

  63. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Honestly, I have never seen a pro team get gashed in the run game like we did vs. Houston and Detroit. I thought there was a good chance Burke was gone after each of those games. It’s weird though, our defense has been feast or famine and that’s not new. It feels like it’s been that way for a decade over lots of different coordinators.

With Suh I definitely saw him forgoe gap integrity to rush the passer. It’s easy to say that you shouldn’t ask Suh to maintain gap integrity since penetration is his game, but nonetheless, if the DC is looking for gap integrity and the DT is looking for penetration, something is going to give. Not sure what our defense problem is this year, but I suspect it’s the fact we’ve had mulitple injuries at the DT position and our LB corp was never that great to start with…so when a RB makes it past the LOS, things get scary, everytime.

  64. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tannehill is most definitely out for the Packers game and is doubtful after the bye.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, Harris hasn’t been what we had hoped for so far but I’ve seen other players like him get better after a few years. Everson Griffen, Brandon Graham and Melvin Ingram had slow starts for example.

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I was sick as a dog yesterday 🤢

Somehow made it through the whole game, and I almost felt even sicker. Nevertheless, we got the “W”, and that’s all that matters. But if we play like that against the Packers, we may as well not even make the trip.

Seems we may have a playing time issue at the Safety position. Hmmm… who’d have thunk that after drafting Minkah in the 1st, with Reshad and TJ already in-house? I hope they get it figured out quickly. All 3 players should be on the field at the same time, all the time, PERIOD.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Minkah is not just a Safety. You can’t let that go can you? He played every position in the secondary yesterday and excelled at all of them as opposed to Jason Allen who just never got it ay any position over years. 😉

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think you’re missing my point. All 3 players should be on the field, every play, all the time. If that means making Minkah a full-time CB, so be it… he’s STELLAR at it! 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes I always miss your point. He’s a rookie and has played a ton. Everyone needs to relax. His role is expanding. Some games are different than others. He is going to be the next Alonso soon enough where he’s out there 100% of the time.
        https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/F/FitzMi00/fantasy/2018

We’re not a championship team. Let the young guys like McMillian and Baker as well earn their expanded roles. Godchaux and Turner have been as well and Turner is done for the season now. It’s not like it’s not happening.

It’s a lot easier from the couch to make these calls then real-time game day matchups from the sidelines. Like Parcells always said, nobody outside of here knows what’s happening here. We overthink it.

I think the low point of the Gase era thus far was yesterday, when the camera panned to him sitting by himself on the bench, trying to figure out what to do. The commentators said that Gase had asked for some input from others (don’t know how they knew that?), and that no one wanted to get involved.

That was just frustrating and saddening to me. Part of me thought that Gase is finally reaping what he’s sewn, the other part of me really feeling bad for him. He’s GOT to get things figured out!

i’m watching the Knicks – I enjoy watching them, even though I know they’re going to lose most games. They need a healthy Porzingis, and then they’ll need another big star to really compete. Still, I like the way they play. It’s so much better w/o Melo, it was unwatchable for me with him here.

    ****

I said something similar about that moment

Gase trying to put together a scoring play on the bench was indicative of erything that wrong with Gase

He doesn’t look like the offensive guru he was touted to be

    That was a bad moment

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      Indeed, a VERY bad moment.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right because we’re loaded with top QB talent right? I thought that was the issue. Just keep piling on. We all say the OL is an issue and we need to move on from our QBs but somehow Gase has to make magic happen. Do you ever stop and realize what y’all are saying? Maybe if Minkah played 15 more snaps per game that would change things. I mean really, folks? He’s on pace to play 839 snaps – 52 per game, and I bet it ends up more than that by the end of the season.

19 teams will have a lesser record than we do at the end of tonight and we’re playing a backup QB. But hey we’re a catastrophe. Every other team is awesome.

When does this “I don’t like it no matter what happens, I must blame someone” ever end?

  90. bat's avatar bat says:

It all stems from bad passing not even bad Quarterback play as a whole. No matter who the QB is he can’t consistently make accurate productive passes. I’m talking about the throws that are actually made when he has time and at the least has an opportunity to make a throw, never mind pressure and sacks all QBs face it.
Overthrowing wide open receivers who are behind everyone, passes on the back shoulder that go incomplete or give the receiver no chance to advance, don’t use the middle of the field, no touch or lack of zip when required it all (the offense) breaks down in the passing game due in large part to poor passing. Again, I’m talking about the throws actually made. All teams have drives that the defense wins. We average 3-4 scoring drives a game we just don’t push the ball down the field. Obviously. I blame poor passing aka shitty QB but poor passing is our problem.

  96. bat's avatar bat says:

You comparing Tannehill to Henne doesn’t make me feel you watch many games. It’s cute and funny but so off-base I can’t take it seriously. So that’s never going to fly with me. It’s an absurd comparison.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Without looking I bet they have similar career stats (Hennessy as a starter) and comparable W/L records.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not even close. W/L is a team record, Son. Aaron Rodgers is 3-4-1. Does that mean he sucks? Do we have to revisit this same thing over and over?

Marino from 86-89 was 30-33 with Shula. Did he stop being a great QB in his prime with an all-time HC? When does team ever get looked at other than one position?

I’ve said many times Tannehill is not an elite QB. But to make silly comparisons is just fine and dandy. Be realistic. Come on, the guy isn’t even playing and many of you keep talking about him like he’s been the problem and he has not played the last 4 games. Nobody knows what would have happened, good or bad.

I’m looking at the entire team and most of you are gotta move on from Tannehill, gotta move on from Tannehill, gotta move on from Tannehill, gotta move on from Tannehill. Okay what about the last 4 games? 2-2 and a win this past Sunday with 6 points on offense.

I have to say the contradictions with stats and wins and losses when it suits the narrative are pretty amusing. I see no bias, just objective discussions. LOL

Like I’ve said in the past, I hope we do move on from him, he goes somewhere else and has success as we continue to bash the next guy when it’s not satisfactory.

We better hope Luke Falk has some of that IT factor or we find someone else, or it can get really ugly. 5-4 with our current status is not really ugly.

  98. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

From Henne, to Moore, to Tannehill, to Cutler, to Osweiler… we’ve not had a QB who could hit a receiver in-stride with any kind of consistency since MR. Pennington.

I DO think that Tanny has gotten better over time, but even he is lackluster.

  99. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

If we start miraculously having 5-6 scoring drives a game, not necessarily all TDs but mostly, besides what the D and ST can chip in we’ll be a solid playoff team.

  100. bat's avatar bat says:

Tim .. They are both below average QB’s with limited football IQ and accuracy issues. Tanny is more mobile, but that is cancelled out by his lack of any pocket awareness. Just two slugs who wasted our time for several years.
