Happy New Year Dolphins Fans

Happy New Year 2019 with colorful fireworks

Well, 2018 wasn’t a great season for the Miami Dolphins. I believe to most of us, a change was more than welcome, and the Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross did not disappoint. Apparently, he’s as displeased with the teams performance as we are, and change was a necessity. The Adam Gase era is now over, lasting only 3 seasons in Miami. The offensive minded coach was expected to bring the Dolphins to new heights, but instead it was new lows. The Dolphins offense finished the season ranked #31 of 32 teams in total yards per game at just under 299 yards per game. #26 in scoring at 19.9 PPG. At 7-9, the Dolphins ended up with a -114 point differential. It’s kind of amazing that we were 7-9 considering how awful and inept we were on both sides of the ball.

The good news – Not only is Adam Gase removed as HC, Dowell Loggains is gone as OC, and Matt Burke also gone as DC.

More good news – Mike Tannenbaum is demoted from VP of Football Operations, and GM Chris Grier now absorbs that title.

GM Chris Grier has already begun the search for a new Head Coach. Rumors are flying around, and it’s difficult to really believe a lot of what is said, so take caution in what you start to fall for. Is John Harbaugh really going to leave the Baltimore Ravens? Is Jim Harbaugh going to leave the college ranks and leave Michigan to break his back again working 20 hour days during the NFL season? Is foot-loving Rex Ryan going to land feet first in Miami? We don’t really know, but it sure is fun to speculate.

The thing that makes me most happy about this transition is Chris Grier is speaking music to my ears. He says he wants to build a team, not try for the quick fix. (Check!)

Grier says we will not be big spenders in Free Agency, especially on veteran players, it would only be on young players, and no overspending. (Check!)

Really, that’s all I can ask for. A plan that can bring the Miami Dolphins to a point where winning is sustainable and consistent. Of course, it’s just a plan, and as we know the plan still has to be executed, and executed well. Regardless, I’m happy, very happy with the entire philosophy. It’s precisely where I think this team should be heading.

As of the moment, we do know the Miami Dolphins have asked the Bears permission to interview their DC Vic Fangio. Fangio is a long time NFL defensive coach, since 1995, first with the Carolina Panthers, the Indianapolis Colts, The Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and then of course the Chicago Bears. The Bears lead the NFL allowing only 17.7 PPG, astounding in this new era of high scoring affairs. Personnel always has something to do with it, and the Bears trading for Khalil Mack had a huge impact on the defense.

Other names that will be bandied about are Mike McCarthy, Bruce Arians, Urban Meyer, Eric Bieniemy, Mike Munchak, Rex Ryan and more . . .

When Chris Grier makes his decision, I hope that the Head Coach chosen share many of the same philosophies and visions for the team, and then are able to fill out their staff with qualified coordinators. I truly hope that ST’s coordinator Darren Rizzi is still part of our team. Special teams has been an excellent unit here, and that’s all due to Rizzi, so I hope he’s being considered.

Here’s to hoping that we finally got this right, and Dolphins fans everywhere can enjoy competitive football for many years to come. As I’ve said in other articles, taking a step or two backwards is a necessary part of rebuilding, and I’m willing to take those lumps. A 3-13 or 4-12 season will bring better things for 2020, when some serious QB talent is expected to be available. That doesn’t mean I think we shouldn’t take one this season, I definitely hope we do. Doesn’t have to be early, but we need competition at the QB position, so somewhere in this draft I hope we find it.

Happy New Year!

Myles Gaskin looks like a baller.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      He is

I thought he would come out last year

But he has had a ton of touches and he’s undersized
So don’t expect a long nfl career

  2. browning only played a half game, he let his team down in the first half, and couldnt make up for it at the end

  3. georgia versus texas, damn the games keep coming 🙂

  4. texas cheerleaders arent cute=, yuch

a team cant win unless they have quality cheerleaders imo, lol jk

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow! Are you guys serious about the Alonso hit? First off, he was asked about hitting the QB and he said he’s going to take his shot whenever he can, let the flags fly, he’ll pay the penalty fines. He dove at him, missed with his helmet, but made sure he cracked him with his leg right in the face. If some guy did that to our QB, I’d hope he would get ejected.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He actually had to hook his leg to make sure he caught Allen in the helmet, they showed the hit a few times. Definitely a dirty hit.

  7. Time to see what Fromm is made of

  8. lol i dont know that i would want him, but i like Ehlinger

  9. ehlinger looks like a guy we could pick up later in the draft, and he could contend for the number 2 QB here in 2020, and be a cheap stop gap for 2019 if we cant land a top talent

an efficient and tough game manager type, but likely not our franchise starter

  10. GA looks like crap on a stick, they wont win playing like this, they need to get it together

  11. Ehlinger really does look like Tim Tebow

  12. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I may be in the minority….but I’m all for the way Kiko plays. You want to run, you pay the price! This team was soft enough, could of used a few more of him out there. Defenses used to put fear into players….now they cant even touch anybody.

    • ripping a qb head off after he slides is not good football, and if he pulled that shit on the street he could get arrested.
the NFL doesnt give people the right to assault with the intent of bodily harm, this isnt an exercise in criminal behaviour, its sport, and business,
i like when lonso plays aggressive, and by the rules, but
if alonso cannot play by the rules everyone else does, he should be fired, and heavily fined.
its selfish to harm the team with penalty yards , when the penalties are intentional.
i would love to see an upgrade in this department, lonso is way overrated. he had a decent year last year but sucked the rest, and hes a real piece of shit with no morals IMO

lonso is never going to help this team win games, hes been here years and cant do it by himself.
hes an inadequate overpaid role player, slow , selfish, and stupid, cjheats, cant play by the rules, gives up huge plays against the run and pass, and costs the team penalty yards

  13. football is a team sport, and lonzo is a selfish me me guy that doesnt care about the team suffering from penalties. we have some other selfish players, and they need to be weeded out

the rebuild should feature team players, and weed the non team selfish guys out
we cant win as individuals, has to be team effort

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

or maybe he just doesn’t like QBs running all over us and puts them on notice at his expense. i call that a team player.

  14. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i didn’t see anything wrong with that play, he didn’t hit the QB. there’s no way that should be an ejection and i would appeal that fine.
if the QB doesn’t want to get hit, slide earlier. otherwise buckle your chinstrap and have a nice day.

  15. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i’m thrilled about one firing, the DC Burke, his philosophy is stupid, wide 9 = skinny middle. we were gashed up the middle

    the guy even looks stupid.

and i dont like Rizzi either, he jumps up and down on the sideline scolding players. to me that says he’s not in control of what’s going on and doesn’t want to take credit for bad plays so he yells at the player to show all it’s not his fault.
    A Character flaw for sure.

everyone makes bonehead plays but the coach should show restraint and talk to the player in private not motion on the sidelines that he’s displeased with that players actions.

    that’s bush league!

    See Tom Landry

  16. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i wonder if the Giants would take our #13 and Tannehill for their #6?

  17. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we could also give Oakland our 1st this year and next to move up to #3 and get our QB but that would hurt our rebuilding process.

i’m for trading back and stockpiling future draft picks.
    a 2nd rnd in 2019 is worth a 1st round in 2020, that’s were the value is

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like Kiko too, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a dirty hit. He’s done it before, drilled Flacco when he was down too. Just keep in mind that when you have a player on your team that does that to the opposing QB , it gives the other team an excuse to do it to your QB. Nobody has bothered to do it to us, because why knock Tannehill out of the game? LOL

They’ll wait until we draft a QB to do it

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am not bashing the guy or saying he won’t do a good job but how does Grier stay with the dolphins for 19 years and get NONE of the blame for the mediocrity of the last two decades?

  20. D's avatar D says:

Daniel Jones is a well prepared QB, with upper end potential, though i think he is less of an elite prospect than Lock or Grier. He’s a safer bet type guy. Id compare him to Rosen from last years group, and i could see him develop into an Eli Manning type QB.

    • D's avatar D says:

Lock and Grier could becaome really elite or they could bust because they still need the finishing touches to complete their QB skill set, i think Daniel Jones already has the skills he just needs to keep refining them. He’s a really smart QB too.

    • D's avatar D says:

Jones should wind up being a first round guy, maybe early second, but i dont think he will slip too muc unless he really does poorly at combine.

  21. D's avatar D says:

Out of the QB’s at senior bowl, im most interested in Grier, and Lock, but Stidham, and Minshew are two of the guys im curious about how they do. I think Stidham has a ton of potential but he just hasn’t impressed me about his development so far. There is definitely something to work with there but i just dont know if he will turn the corner. Id take him as a second QB pick in a later round and give him a chance to compete for the spot, but i dont see him beating out any of the top guys.

  22. D's avatar D says:

Especially if we move on from Frank Gore, id like to look at Bennie Snell Jr and LJ Scott (Senior Bowl) as an RB add in a middle round. I think Snell will go 3-4, maybe even 2nd round, and Scott probably 3-5 depending on if his senior bowl and combines are good.

  23. D's avatar D says:

I hope we settle the coaching job soon. Id like for us to have our coach already here so he can pick his scheme, etc so we can scout the right guys at the senior bowl and combine. I really dont want us to go into those events without an idea of what we will be doing.

  24. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Huh, I tend to disagree but who the hell am I? I think they are too small for the 3-4

    • D's avatar D says:

Disagree with that. I dont see Baker and McMillan ideal for any position in a 3-4, maybe Baker would make a suitable Will but i dont think McMillan has the size, speed or power to be a good SAM.

  25. D's avatar D says:

No one is going to trade for Tanny, not unless we renegotiate his contract and get his money down before we do. No one wants that contract.

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

D, Gore is gone. He was on a one year contract. The new staff may decide to bring back a 36-year-old running back but I think it is unlikely.

    • D's avatar D says:

True, and good point. The transition to a new staff does make that unlikely, though he makes a good locker room presence, so you never know.

  27. D's avatar D says:

Our best SOLB would be Harris and thats a position switch we dont know a ton of how it would go over. He did play at OLB some at Missouri but i dunno know if it was a scheme that would really translate to the NFL.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i had to switch to 3-4 it would be Kiko and McMillan in the middle and Harris and Baker outside. I would say we would be pretty weak in the middle with that setup because neither baker or Alonzo are ideal for those positions. We would definately need new DE’s though i think Hays would do OK as a 3-4 DE, and we definately have no worthy NT. Might could have Godchaux and Taylor at the DE spots too, but again, thats a wildly different assignment from what they have been doing so i dunno how that would go.

  28. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I agree that Baker and McMillan would be 2 good ILBs in a 3-4
And yeah – we need a NT which is no easy task

I think we can okay some of our current DL (like godcauex) at DE

    But the problem isn’t inside
    It’s outside
    We need 2 OLB
    2 pass rushers

    So again
If we make that switch, we still have those big holes

Of course if we did that
    And drafted to Pass
    Rushers with our first picks

I would be very excited about that

It obviously comes at the expense of other needs though (interior OL and QB)
But maybe we can pull it off

If we are going to make that switch
    Now is a good time

It really just depends who our coach is I guess
Imo a preference over a 3-4 or 4-3 is no reason Not to hire a HC or DC

    We have holes either way

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    On Kiko
I’m a little hesitate t to call anything that’s being called illegal lately “dirty” bc the rules have changed so much

But Kiko throws his body around a lot
    It’s a quality I appreciate
    It’s also very dangerous
And sometimes he is way out of place on the field leaving gaping holes in our defense

He’s not the most disciplined player

Also have you ever heard Kiko speak
    He sounds concussed already…lol

Maybe retirement is a good idea for Kiko
    He’s had a good career
The way he plays is a little problematic in the modern nfl
And he’s probably causing more damage to himself than anyone else

  30. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Short memories….I can recall Kiko winning a game or 2 and making some huge plays for the team

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The only thing wrong with the Kiko hit on Allen was he whiffed big time. If you say your going to hit the guy dirty, attempt to hit him dirty (it it inarguable that it would have been dirty under today’s rules), and are going to get kicked out for it, you better make damn sure you get a good lick in.

It was pathetically executed all the way around IMO.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, my post was not a direct argument against your ‘dirty’ position, Pig. I just read your post. We can call it illegal if you want. It’s semantics. Although, when the guy says before the game he’s going to do it, I would tend to call it dirty.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Maybe he meant to pull up on the hit at the last second, he has done that before.

  32. D's avatar D says:

I dont think the hit on Flacco was dirty, he didnt slide soon ehougn and the way he launched into him wasn’t indisputably dirty. It was a vicious hit, but a lot of hits in football are. I definately dont see that one as dirty. I haven’t see too many of his hits that i consider dirty but i also dont pussy up my football so maybe thats why i see things differently. A couple of his have been borderline to me just because they seemed intentional, but for the ost part i just think he plays a really attack type style, real agressive player, which i like.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kiko bailed on that hit at the last moment. It looked a lot worse than it was. He was going for him and he’s done that a few times in the past, but there really was no significant contact.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Have you seen that our former QB coach and Mike Sherman’s son-in-law back from back in 2012-15 is being interviewed for head coaching jobs?

  35. D's avatar D says:

We probably would need to ILB’s, a couple of DE’s and an NT to really switch over to 3-4 and thats giving consideration to successful transitioning to new positions by some of our current players. It could be more. Its not happening in any sort of successful way in one years time. It might partially get there year one and then look a little more settled out the next but at minimum 2 off-seasons.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think McMillan can play ILB in a 3-4. Baker might have to add some weight. But McMillan as the Mike and Baker as the Will might work.

  36. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I read somewhere that they had fired the HC…OC and DC…?? maybe not???

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      Best news I’ve heard yet.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think thats what it means, because they say fired when they mean fired. They obviously are keeping him around in a certain capacity, just not able to superseded Grier’s decisions on direction of the team. Armando reads too much into shit.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Armando does have good sources inside the organization. He’s usually right about stuff like this. He’s also the one that was saying in the 2nd half of the season to expect big changes and it happened. I originally thought Tannenbaum was given some other type of position within the org and maybe he has, but he has nothing to do with the football operations.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think he is gonna be serving as a consultant…. which is still a position inside the organization, its just a no teeth position, suggest all ya want, but no control

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not sure how being the new VP of jockstrap washing saves anyone from ’embarrassment’.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL… when Tannenbaum first joined the org I know he was involved with sports science and some other things so maybe that’s what it is.

  38. D's avatar D says:

OCRob i think you could interprt it that way, they are pretty much all gone if Gase is, because thats his staff. If he doesn’t tak a new HC gig and bring them along, then the new coach might retain some of them, Rizzi the most likely, but thats not how it usually goes.

  39. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Rock
I think we can throw that Parcells era beleif about big LBs in the 3-4 in the trash with every other parcels outdated belief

The Bears drafted the undersized Roquam Smith last year to play inside in the 3-4

And the Bears ran the 3-4 very effectively

    Mack and Floyd are 6-3+
But smith and Trevathan are not

The game has changed so much to become a heavy passing game
I think this is a less of a concern than it used to be

But Imo he biggest concern is where he pass rush comes from

Maybe we draft an elite pass rusher at 13
And maybe Charles Harris blossoms in a 3–4
But that’s a lot to hang your hat on

  40. D's avatar D says:

I dont think its so much about the “big” LB theory, its the style they play. McMillian is more suited for 4-3 because he is more rangy than a pure downhill LB. Size usually plays into it just because usually the bigger the frame the more muscle and weight you can put on it to stand up to the punishment and fighting off of the OL, etc. I dont see McMillian as fighting off OL very well and i dont think he closes gaps in the middle well. Thats why i dont think he could make the transition well, because that would be even more crucial for him to be able to do in a 3-4.

    • D's avatar D says:

Baker isnt that kind of guy at all, but his coverage ability, etc would workfor 3-4 pretty well in the WOLB role. Harris would be the more appropriate for SOLB. Kiko and Micmillan would probably work best in the ILB role but neither are really suited for it, but i could also see Alonzo in the SOLB role, but i dont think he would be as good as having Harris there.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I can buy that argument

But I’ll also say that the scheme the incoming coach wants to run is a lot more important than the current roster

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s still developing and played better down the stretch. He may or may not succeed at it but if the 3-4 is what the new HC runs that’s where he’ll play. The new transition in year one doesn’t mean that’s what it will look like in year three.

  41. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

    Rockphin:

Fwiw, I was listening to NFL Sirius yesterday (I think it was) and Bill Polian said that Grier is a dyed in the wool football guy and a great choice actually call the shots.

He’s not immune from criticism but he was not the guy with veto power in that triangle. He will be now, so I guess we’ll see…

  42. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

When I heard the word “reassigned” I knew it was effectively fired

    I mean get serious

“Reassigned” – I think they are referring to gender reassignment bc he was publicly castrated…lol

Obviously the guy was friends was Ross and he was trying not to embarrass him

But reassigned to a nonfootball operations portion of a football team doesn’t really sound very impactful to the team

  43. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We pretty much need a brand new front 7 in the 3-4
But I think we can probably fill 3 spots (2LBs and one DE) with guys currently in the roster without being a disaster

So it’s probably 4 or so news guys

Ask yourself this: do you really think we don’t need 4 news guys in a 4-3

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Or we may remain as a 4-3 DEF.

  45. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Whatever they want to call it, I’m glad Tannenbaum’s position as staple rehabilitation and reintegration manager will keep his fingers off the team and out of the coffers.

It’ll be nice to have a far more traditional power structure in place, that way when we fail, we’ll know exactly who to blame, lol.

  46. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Guys, I don’t see anybody (including myself) advocating we move to a 3-4 Defense. However, if we were to do so, the time is NOW… during a rebuild. And the fact is, we have the personnel to make the transition as painless as possible. All we’d have to do is find a FA NT, then draft one.

NO, we wouldn’t be a top-5 Defense during the transition year… but nobody could ever hope to be. It’s all about keeping every option open, because the time is NOW to make such a decision.

I think it’s a healthy convo to have.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need to know who the HC is and who he hires as DC first.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Exactly! But as I’ve said (not today), if we land Vic Fangio as our next HC, we could very well switch to a 3-4.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The question is this: could we successfully and quickly transition to a 3-4 if necessary? I say YES, we can.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He probably would because that is what he prefers to run. We can have some fun trying to piece together a 3-4 with what we have, but it doesn’t mean that’s what we’re going to do.

A lot of it also depends on what Grier wants to do with the roster in terms of cap. If he cleans out a lot of the higher priced vets, we can go in any direction because we’re retooling it anyway.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Precisely, Tim.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tim alluded to it, it’s going to come down to the HC we hire, and what he wants to run. If he want sot run a 3-4 then we’ll start the transition right away.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Well, now he stated it explicitly, lol. (forgot to refresh before posting)

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

See my reply above to Tim, my friend! We’re all on the same page about it depends on who the HC will become.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, and no reason to think we can’t transition to 3-4 quickly. We’re in a rebuild anyway, next year is likely going to include some growing pains no matter which paths we take on both offense and defense.

  47. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And so until we know who our next HC, OC, and DC will be, I don’t even know what I’m looking for in the ’19 Draft, save a QB or elite prospect who can play in any scheme.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In a rebuild you just keep taking BPA. The only time you target a specific position is when you’ve already got a good overall roster but need a specific piece. Then you maneuver for that specific position.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m just sayin’… if we move to a 3-4, we’re going to have to target a NT. That will change the dynamics of our Draft.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah we’d need a NT, but we could also add some young mid-tier guys in FA to fill the position and draft one at some point to start with until we find “the guy”. We’re not going to build a premier 3-4 DEF in the first season. We’re not going to build a premier 4-3 DEF either if we clean out a lot of vets either. The first season is going to be the transition year with growing pains anyway like Kong said above.

  48. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    CavKong,

Are you an Ice Cube fan (his music)?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Back in the day I used to listen to his stuff. Of course I liked NWA. Once he went more mainstream I fell off his stuff (while respecting it, because he took his career seriously). I’m pretty sure The Predator was the last of his music that I really liked.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m a HUGE West Coast music fan who is ADDICTED to the funk… it’s what I DO! If ya like George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic, this song is right up your alley!

If you’re at work, don’t turn it up! Cube is cussin’ his azz off! LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ll check it out tonight at home. Is this new Ice Cube? (new being defined as anything 2010+)
I am definitely down with the funk. I love me some George Clinton and Parliament. Cheers 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

YESSIR! Cube dropped this track just last month. LONG LIVE THE FUNK!!! CHEERS!!!

  49. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  50. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

BOOTSY, baby-boba! LOL! Of course, Bootsy Collins is a member of Parliament-Funkadelic, and has been declared by most musical scholars as one of the greatest guitarists of all-time. You may appreciate this one, which I just discovered… came out in ’17.

    I’m ready to switch to a 3-4

And I want all my LBs to be Oompa Loompas

So you will just have to deal with whatever I want

And don’t worry, I’m not being selfish: it’s reciprocal

while you are dealing with satisfying whatever I want, I will be dealing with the fact that I don’t care how you feel about it and that only my decision matters
    – and that’s not easy.

    So there’s that.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – The commentators brought up that one of them spoke to Kiko, he said he’s not going to change his game, he knows you can’t hit the QB when he’s going down, but if he has a shot at a QB, he’s going to take it, and he’ll pay the fines if he gets them. Then they showed an angle where he dives in helmet first like a missile, but he knew he missed, so he kinda hooked his leg, and his knee/thigh caught Allen right under his helmet.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They spoke to him before the game, just to clarify

The question is this: could we successfully and quickly transition to a 3-4 if necessary? I say YES, we can.
    —————————————
Im not against the switch at all, im just saying i dont think there will be immediate success as to play that scheme im not in love with a few of our current players to play in it. Thats what happens though when your team changes coaching and philosophies. Some player will remain, some will transition and some will remain long enough to get replaced. Those guys who are at least thought to be able to, or are contractually cheap enough to attempt the transition will probably be given their shot to transition, but others will be shown the door so the new coach can get his people into the building. Again, im not sayig we cant play Kiko or McMillian at ILB, im just saying im not expecting it to be a smooth transition if at all. It depends on a lot of things too, so i wont really be able to pontificate on this with any confidence until i see who they select and really hope that selection happens soon.

  55. Randy's avatar Randy says:

To me, it looked like Kiko tried to twist his shoulders at the last second and avoid hitting him but definitely tried to fling his leg in a way to hit him. So, he’s a pussy for turning his shoulders. If you’re gonna talk it, walk it. And I don’t care if it’s against the rules….the rules suck. QBs need to be hit often and as hard as possible….but that’s just me. If you’re gonna make a hit that gets you tossed….make it count.

Bootsy is just GRAND! For him to be involved with both James Brown and George Clinton is quite the rarity. I really do like me some James Brown, but IMO, James couldn’t hold a candle to George Clinton. Again, JMO.

Again, I’m not advocating a switch to the 3-4. I’m just sayin’, if we were to do it, the time is NOW.

I DO believe that we can operate a most successful 4-3 without Matt Burke. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, man.

Armando is on the tank the 2019 season train for Tua. Yeah the new HC wants to come in and tank the season for a rookie QB the following season. Does anyone realize how disrespectful that is to all involved? If they stink and that’s how it falls so be it but how the hell do you do that on purpose?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No one “wants” to do it, but if it happens, it will probably help us more in the long run. It’s like the Knicks right now. They’re bad, they can’t finish. They’re losing, and they’re just not good enough to win during crunch time, and if they get the top pick, I’ll be thrilled because it makes them a better team. I’m not holier than thou, if we suck, and we can get a top pick by being 2-14, and we have a meaningless game in week 17 against a poor opponent, I’m fine with not trying too hard to win.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Look at what Jon Gruden just did.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Switch to a 3-4 Defense, and excuses are automatically built in for failing during a transition/rebuilding year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He did with it with his roster, not by not trying to compete in the games. They also won too much and pick 4th. But he has three 1st rd picks this year and two next next year so they can definitely trade up.

The Colts did it in 2011 because Peyton was out for the year, their roster sucked and they had no QBs.

That’s why I said if we stink and it falls that way so be it, but you don’t do it on the field. Tanking also doesn’t guarantee you the QB is going to be the answer, it’s just all opinions at this point.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That said, ARZ, SF and NYJ are not likely looking for a QB. So OAK is probably safe if they like any of the QBs in this draft.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gutting quite a bit of the roster and going young including fiscally responsible in FA we may end up 4-12 or worse because we don’t have enough players, and the owner is already okay with that to build the team the right way. That’s the only way you tank. Can’t ask a team to not go out, play hard and compete.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, imagine if they let Tannehill go, say Falk is the QB next season, or Osweiler. It won’t be hard to end up with a very poor record.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

True, that’s how it happens. In a situation like that you better focus on running the ball and doing it somewhat well so you can at least compete to a degree and not get your QBs killed.

I use to work construction, when we had a new guy come on the job it took considerable time for him to learn what to do.

what Ross has done with hiring new coaches is they have all been rookie head coaches.

they are going up against veteran coaches such a Bellichick, they don’t stand a chance.

Ross needs to change his MO and hire a veteran HC, not a rookie

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not sure it’s a good analogy. These guys aren’t new to coaching. They should be ready to be HCs. They have built up their coaching experience and risen through the ranks. They are more like apprentices or even journeymen that have enough knowledge and the opportunity to now be out on their own. If I hire a journeyman carpenter to help with a job, he had better have plenty of knowledge and know-how. There are also plenty of examples of 1st time HCs being successful.

That being said, your point is still valid. We have not had a good track record hiring rookie HCs. I would also like to see us go away from a first-timer and make a run at Harbaugh (if the rumors are true) or McCarthy.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Which Harbaugh, John or Jim? I wouldn’t trade picks if that’s what it would take.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m thinking John, although I’d take Jim as well. in regards to the picks, I’m not giving up multiple 1sts, but I’ll give up next years top pick.

I’m tired of not having a proven, quality HC. We haven’t had legitimacy there since JJ. It’s such an integral element and worth a couple of picks IMO.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Looking at the list of HCs since JJ left is vomit inducing. It’s really not just the personnel dept holding us back. how can any team succeed with that list. I don’t think it’s coincidence that our 18 year run of mediocrity (at best) began after JJ left, and Wanny ruined what was left of his team.

  64. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,

Regarding your comment above, I also like Kiko. I think you know what you get with him. He’ll rack up the tackles and make some big plays, being dominating in some games, then frustrate you the next week with a couple of penalties and mental errors. And he’ll often get exposed in coverage. I was also just giving my take on the hit/whiff on Allen.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, to be fair Wannstedt did make the playoffs twice (first two years) and had a winning record 4 years in a row after Jimmy Johnson retired. It all imploded in 2004. Wannstedt’s record was better in those 4 years with Fiedler than Johnson’s was in his 4 years with Marino.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That’s why I included the line about it being JJ’s team. I still remember the Wanny years. He was far too conservative, a la Schottenhiemer, and he wasted the best talent we’ve had since the early 80s. Those teams were loaded on the defensive side. I probably could have coached them to the playoffs. All IMO of course.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Remember the Wanny led team that was up something like 900 point on the Bears at the half, and we went into prevent late 3rd quarter and ended up losing. Lol, that one still pisses me off, but it epitomized Wanny’s coaching style.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree he lost the pulse on the team. He also went all out for Ricky and had great success then got fucked by him. Do you remember in 2002 we had the playoffs in our grasp with Ricky running wild over the Pats for 185 and then Travis Minor botched a KO and Chris Chambers dropped a crucial 3rd down pass? Both teams didn’t make the playoffs that year at 9-7.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, there will be growing pains no matter who comes in and who stays. with new coaches come new playbooks and sometimes all new terminology.

  72. I really like the list of head coaching candidates the team has set up. Only one I don’t care for is Flores because I don’t think you go from LB’s coach to one yr at DC to HC. If he had more of a resume it would be different.

Bieniemy, for instance, is only the OC in KC for one year two but his resume speaks volumes about the type of coach he is.

But, all in all, Fangio, Richard, Bieniemy and Munchak is a pretty good list

  76. D's avatar D says:

I wonder if he winds up in Arizona, Rosen was one of the QB’s he was said to like last year, and if he goes there it might tell us that he wanted Rosen here but that the FO wouldn’t trade to get him. We know he liked Baker, that shit was all over the news.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Re: Alonzo, I think he took that angle on the non-hit on purpose. If he didn’t get down soon enough he would get nailed. If he did get down kiko knew he would miss. Like taking a shot across the bow of a Somali pirate boat. You let them know you mean business.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me I think whether we hire a first time HC – young or older, or a guy who has been a HC before, they have to put a good staff together. And most importantly Grier hires a guy who fits his vision very well. No disconnects other than some insignificant BS that all humans have. That sort of stuff finds its way throughout the locker room and into the public eye. It creates dissension and doubt. It becomes a negative. See the Steelers and that never happens to them.

Then ultimately you have to find good players, and a couple of really good ones. For me year one 2019 is going to be a purge of the roster, a transition in philosophy and growing pains. System doesn’t really matter at this point.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It would be nice but the Steelers have been dealing with Bell drama all year and now some Brown drama. Ben had a lot of drama come up over the years including his inappropriate behaviors around women, pouting over losing Arians, and several seasons of early retirement talk.

Tomlin has been known as a players coach and that can sometimes lead to poor behavior from overgrown cry-babies. He’s still a fantastic coach but they’ve had some drama the last few years.

    • D's avatar D says:

I was thinking about this and i think Ross may have ousted both TBaum and Gase because of neithers attempt to work out the differences and get on the same page. It just seemed to me in his presser that he was ticked that there was never an established identity nor a cohesive direction that the team was moving in. I think his comment about winning games was also directed at people who wanted things their way win or not, i.e. not humble enough to see their own fault in the bad marriage.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s why Ross has streamlined management. Grier is the top voice on football matters, then the HC. Ross overseas it. That’s it. At the presser only Ross and Grier were there because they didn’t have a HC. I think Ross is saying; “Chris, I’m putting this in your hands, you’ve earned it. You hire the HC and run the football team. I’ll just follow the results and go from there.”
