Miami Dolphins and the offseason QB puzzle

One piece of the puzzle was filled yesterday with the Denver Broncos trading for Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco. The Ravens will receive a 2019 4th RD pick from the Broncos in exchange for Joe Flacco. If the Dolphins truly do intend to move on from QB Ryan Tannehill, they will first look to trade him, and now with Flacco traded for a 4th RD pick, the market has been set. The Dolphins probably wouldn’t get a 4th RD pick for the oft injured QB, but a 5th isn’t out of the question.

The bigger question is, what are the Dolphins intentions going into free agency, and then the draft? There are quite a few QB’s available that are average or below average, but there’s only one out there that that’s young-ish, that has potential to be more than average, and that’s 27YO Teddy Bridgewater. Nick Foles is not a FA, and the Eagles still have potential to franchise tag Foles, in order to be able to trade him. There is some controversy regarding that, and it’s understandable. Foles had a buyout clause in his contract, which was a hefty $20 contract, the buyout being Foles would have to pay the Eagles $2M to become a free agent. Considering the fact that the $2M should buy his fredom, it doesn’t seem fair that the Eagles should then be able to restrict his freedom by tagging him. We’ll see how this plays out.

Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and Josh McCown are all QB’s I’d say for all intents and purposes are about equal to Ryan Tannehill. In my mind, it would make no sense to pay Tannehill $13.24M, and then turn around and give another $8-10M to one of the aforementioned QB’s. The only QB that could make sense is Bridgewater, if the organization felt like they make Bridgewater into a playoff caliber QB, and Bridgewater can make us a playoff caliber team. I don’t think he can, and I wouldn’t go that direction. I don’t think we need a bridge QB, we have 2 young QB’s on the roster, and I hope to have a 3rd after the draft.

Luke Falk, Jake Rudock, and whichever QB we snare in the draft. Let’s face it, we need a great QB here if we want to elevate this team. None of the guys in the previous paragraph are taking us there. Don’t waste time and money, draft the right QB, and run with him! Start the process now! We can draft another QB in 2020 if this QB looks like a dog, but hopefully that’s not the case. How many young QB’s do we see play every season? At least 4 or 5. Let’s be one of those teams. Just because Tannehill didn’t pan out, that’s not a reason to avoid drafting a QB, it’s the biggest reaso to go ahead and do it!

Greg Roman Says Ravens Are ‘Redefining Everything We Do’.

They are rebuilding their offense around Lamar Jackson. This will set a new trend again. Not that it hasn’t happened before, but because football goes in cycles. The thing we all have to focus on are the rules of engagement in the NFL. It’s getting softer not harder. LOL

Seriously though, it’s true. Especially for QBs, but once they’re out of the pocket other than the typical penalties you’re fair game. But… they have even stretched it to the slide. Do that and you’re not supposed to touch me. The motto in football is don’t get the QB hit. Running QBs defy that logic. It’s always a risk. The more they draw contact the pct. of them getting hurt goes up. It’s simple physics.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

As said earlier, that is what you would have to do with Murray, rebuild around him. What do you do if/when that guy goes down? Your backups will need to be of the same type QB (fast/mobile) for sure.

      • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

With Haskins and the other top QB’s (outside Murray) you would not have to do that.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

        And breakable!
I would easily take a penalty and smash puny little QB. Kiko is gonna feast if this is the new NFL!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep and yep! It’s still unknown.

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Running QB’s still get hit. In the SB, Goff got hit right before he went out of bounds. That’s the same type of hit that knocked Pat White out of the NFL

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know everything is up in the air right now, but I don’t think we’re going QB early this season. I have a feeling we go more traditional at the position – Rudock, Falk and a rookie maybe 3rd or later. Try that route, see where it is while building the trenches along with other areas of the team. Then revisit QB in 2020. What is the rush for “the QB” of the future year one of a new regime and rebuild? We don’t know if there is one or he’ll be there. I’d say keep an open mind. 🙂

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ FROMM 2020!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m all for that plan! I would not be disappointed in the least if Haskins was there at 13 and we grabbed him. I have no problem grabbing a QB a little later, either 2nd RD or even later, just add some young talent to the QB position

    • Exactly and the kid from Clemson isn’t going to be the only one there in the future. You take a look at a guy like Brock Purdy from Iowa St and there’s another qb who will be there. Who’s to say a couple more don’t pop up on the radar?

If we can start getting some other parts of the team shored up it will go a long way to making this team solid not just for the short run but for the long run. Maybe a Stidham or Ta’amu can run the offense well enough for the time being. Or maybe one of the other two we’ve got right now step up.

The biggest thing I want to see is better talent evaluation. Whomever they pick in the draft and sign in FA needs to be players that fit and players that give them what they’re looking for. Of course, coaching WILL make a difference but we’ve missed on some talent in order to take a lesser talent at another position.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – Guys like Darren Sproles, who are probably about 190 lbs can take hits, because his body mass is considerable for his height. Spoles is 5’6 190, so he’s thick like Russell Wilson, just shorter. At the moment, that is not the case with Murray. He’s smaller, but I’m curious to see how he weighs in at the combine, if he comes in heavier.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Here’s the thing for Murray, if he’s closer to 5-10 200 and big or decent sized hands he could go anywhere 1st round. If he’s 5-9 or shorter, around 190 and average or small hands, he’s out of the 1st round. I do think that matters. LOL

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

QBs for the 2019 college season haven’t played yet. Oh my there could be more. There will be other QBs coming out of college in the future. LOL

    • no question. who would have thought Lawrence would have done with Clemson what he did except for maybe some of the people who really knew him but there’s going to be new talent out there all of the time.

again, keep your eye on Brock Purdy of Iowa St, just as one example. but, there’s definitely going to be more.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right, there may be others who are juniors and seniors nobody saw coming. I mean Kurt Warner went undrafted and got passed on many times and he’s a HOF QB. Tom Brady 6th rd. It doesn’t have to be #1 or top 5.

  6. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

DIVISION I College Baseball has begun. FAU swept the U. of Cincinnati all 3 games this weekend in Boca Raton. NEXT UP: an early season trip to Coral Gables to play the University of Miami’s highly touted baseball team. FAU swept “the U.” all 3 games last season. A win at Mark Light Stadium might land the Owls a Top-25 ranking in the polls.

  7. I’ve seen Murray listed at 195, which is about 11 pounds lighter than Drew Bree’s.
One of Murrays coaches says he measured him at 5′ 9″ and 7/8 in socks

Murray stretches the conceptual boundaries of size, he’s smaller than pretty much any QB ever except for Doug Flutie.
this the difficulty in determining where he should be drafted.

It’s true he might not be able to handle it, but only one way to find out.
However The Pat White hit to the head would have hurt anyone though, a bigger QB doesn’t have a tougher head.

  8. If we wait around for the next Brady in the sixth round, it might not be in our lifetimes. I haven’t seen a flood of successful QB,s in the sixth round since Brady, there can’t be very many.

There are always exceptions, but the rarer they are, the less likely we could ever find gold late in the draft.
The vast majority of starting QB,s come from the first round, and several of the 2019 QB,s will most likely go early in the first round.
We can certainly pick a QB in the sixth round, but I would refrain from claiming he is the next Brady unless he proves it first

    What’s up gang?

I just watched the Patrick/Murray interview and honestly I think that’s a whole lot about nothin’.
    ————–
100% agreed. His lack of an agent at the time certainly didn’t help, either. I stuck up for Kyler Murray in thi case as well. Good post.

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If Kyler Murray drops to the 3rd round, I might think about drafting him. Luv the kid, he’s got out of this world talent, but he’s sleight of build for the QB position.

Tim, if Murray’s hands measure as large, it likely means his bone density isn’t very solid (unless he’s a biological freak of nature). If his hands measure as small, it likely means his bone density is solid.

  11. Btw Kurt warner went undrafted because teams back then shied away from college QB,s that only had a single year of starting QB .

Obviously the story of Kurt going from the scrap heap to the super bowl is the unicorn rags to riches fairytale, not oft repeated.

It’s a great story though, incredible once in a lifetime fortune, one I couldn’t imagine playing out for Miami

But hoping for an undrafted Kurt Warner to come tonus, is it a great rebuild strategy ? Or do better options exist?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      What’s good, Brah?!!

There’s only ONE Kurt Warner! He’s a very special individual (mentally and spiritually), and people like him are RARE in football. And that’s why his story is so very special.

  12. Btw, something is going on with the corn supply. I can’t find any corn in the stores anymore, and today the grocery stores were almost out of cereal too.
Most cereal has corn in it.
Is anyone else experiencing corn o corn based products shortages in their areas? I only found Two packages of corn in 4 grocery stores, and they looked old.
2 Old corn packages is all that’s left, and they are $5.00 for 4 ears.

Last year I bought ten ears of corn for a dollar at Walmart, not this year

  13. I even called another store in north Orlando, and they said they didnt have corn, and have no idea if they can get more, same story I heard in Kissimmee and Clermont

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What kind of corn are ya looking for? Canned? Frozen? Fresh? Any?

      • What’s up buddy, Fresh corn on the cob, even more alarming is the cereal supply is dwindling. I can’t remember seeing this before.
It’s either a temporary glitch, or a warning sign of food supply problems.

In FL, we all know from past hurricanes if daily truck deliveries are stopped, the food runs out quickly, but I’m not aware of any hurricanes today, this is very odd

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I can tell ya this much: it’s been a relatively cold winter through the bread-basket states and up north. As such, some have chosen to burn corn instead of coal as a source of heat. Perhaps this is contributing to the lack of corn in Florida? I really haven’t the answer at the moment.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I find it to be fundamentally flawed to burn up our food supply, for whatever it may be worth. And it’s not just OUR food supply, but the food supply for farm animals. This is a very bad idea.

  14. Thanks for the corn reports, lol. It’s baffling what’s going on in central Florida, hopefully it will pass

  15. I agree we should not burn food to heat homes, especially when solar and wind power is readily available

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s not a viable option for everybody, contingent upon locale. I would absolutely LOVE to go to solar and wind, but we can’t do that here in PA.

      • Solar is viable in PA, I don’t know of wind is though. Solar accounts for almost 1 percent of power in PA, it’s definitely doable. I’ve seen solar in northern China, and Sweden has it too. Solar isn’t just for Florida, the solar panels are more efficient today than ever before, and they work pretty much everywhere now.

The Magic Kingdom at Disney is now solar powered, and the Orlando Utilities coal powered plant has huge solar farms on the property, and plans to shut down the coal are in the works.
The coal plant is nasty dirty, filled our once pristine lakes with Mercury and other toxic chemicals

  17. I like AMD, DIS, and APHA for My margins, and I like to devote about 15 percent of My profile into a high volatility penny stock or two.

For example, I bought 15000 share of DPW at .092 cents apiece . They have a target price of $2 on the year, earnings and revenues are climbing for DPW. It’s extremely oversold.

I have watched this stock for 13 months waiting for it to hit bottom and do a trend reversal. By watching the volume and volatility, I believe the time is now for this sucker to blow up huge.

If my .09 shares go to a dollar each, I’ll have $15000 , initial investment of 1400

I sure as hell wouldn’t gamble my entire profile, but I feel like 1400 is ok to risk, because I just know it’s at the bottom and is rising. It’s actually up 6 percent aftermarket now, and the volatility is nuts. All signs of a huge rise in my experience

    —————
I follow ya. So allow me to ask: has Kyler Murray ever had problems with ‘grippin’-&-rippin’ it’, or with fumbles in college? I say NO.

However, I think hand-size can tell more about a player’s bone density, when compared to overall size (height & weight). Mind you, nothing is absolute.

  19. From pa.gov

There are currently over 1300 megawatts of wind power generation installed in Pennsylvania on 27 wind farms. These wind farms provide enough electricity, on average, to power nearly 350,000 Pennsylvania homes.

Kurt Warner got his opportunity because of chance. Right place and right time. None of us know where the next one comes from. At least search for QBs as you rebuild hoping to land “the guy”.

    • I’m willing to put $20 bucks up to say that the QB,s in the 2019 draft that go in the first round, fare better than the later round QB,s

Draft scouts aren’t always smoking meth, some are quite good at their craft nowadays, lol

Drafting is a bit like gambling, a good gambler aligns the odds in his favor, and odds are the best QB talent goes off the board first.

To align the odds in our favor, we have to pick a QB at 13 if he is BPA, and take a chance if the team management feels like He is our guy.

Maybe it all backfires, but I don’t want to see Sarah Huckabee, pee wee Herman or Cardi B at QB, lol

We have to go for the guy that has the best upside to his game,

    ————–
    Really? You truly believe that?

I understand “right place and right time”, but Kurt Warner certainly was NOT an example of that. Tom Lady*? YES. Kurt Warner? NO.

I haven’t studied the now defunct NFL Europe in a LONG time, but I should think that not so many of those players were in the “right place and right time”… much less make an NFL roster for more than a few years… or make the NFL HOF.

Even the mighty Tim Tebow couldn’t do what Kurt Warner had done.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I suppose what I’m trying to say is that if one is good enough, one rises. IMO, there’s no such thing as “right place and time”. Or as you would say… 32 teams passed on Kurt Warner 7 times.

These stupid FOs did the same thing to Tony Romo, and a whole plethora of UDFAs who became GREAT!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay. Don’t want to spend a lot of time on it. It was see if you can find a diamond in the rough as you search for “the guy” at QB. Sometimes there is a Kurt Warner.

One time A guy found 20 million bucks on his front porch, but I doubt I will, lol

We have to keep our search realistic

  22. How many QB have been all pro or pro bowlers in all of Miami ,s history.?
    3
Bob Griese, Earl Morall, and guess who, Dan Marino

All 3 were first round picks.

The problem is that Socialism, like Communism is never implemented in its purist form. Its an idealistic governmental social and economic philosophy that requires all people living in it to be completely committed not just to the labeling but also fully committed to that lifestyle. Its fragile in that it can be ruined by human nature, and 100% of the time in history, socialism fails and people suffer. Thats not to say that some aspects of it cant be woven in to other systems, but its next to impossible to prevent the bad parts from spreading like a wildfire because the government would have to police the socilist programs, and the people corrupting the programs is the government. Who polices the police? Its a good idea but it would take humans not acting like humans to get it to work right.

Socialism, like Communism is meant to be a government of smaller units and not bigger ones. I mean community and communism have the same root. Even larger cities would have trouble running a communistic or socialistic government, much less a state or a national government. Its a lot easier for the governments to work when it small units of people who really care for one another to give to others without expecting gain for themselves. There are individual socialistic and communistic units inside of all societies, they are called families and even those get corrupted by greed sometimes.

  62. D's avatar D says:

James is a good OT, he just has inconsistent games, mostly because he cant hold up to a good power rush. Speed rush he is pretty solid against. Just as examples, look how well he handled Bosa who primarily is a speed rusher and then how well he did not do last time he met up with Cam Jordan who primarily does power moves. Watt is a pretty good blend of moves, and you can see what was working in that game alone. He doesnt get his anchor quick enough for those guys, nor does he stay low enough.

    • D's avatar D says:

Tunsil is a better overall OT, but he also needs to clean up some things. I think his problem has more been because of LG being such a weak spot for us he has tried so hard to comepnsate on some games that he fail his primary responsibility trying to compensate/assist the OG with theirs.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think we can. He’s going to be a highly sought after free agent. Like I said earlier, probably $8-10M per year, 4 or 5 year deal. If not us, he’ll get that somewhere else. The top 10 guys now are between $7.3M and $15M. James because of his age can slot in the higher realm of that, not necessarily the top but probably $10M per. I’d say our only shot of getting him cheaper is if he prefers to stay here.

With James it’s all about how the new staff views him. He was drafted by Hickey and not sure what Grier thinks of him.

  66. D's avatar D says:

Id make the trade for Rosen for a 2nd or later, i said this a while back. I wouldn’t give up a first round pick though. I think its possible Arizona would let him go for a 2nd, but probably not much lower, possibly a 3rd. If you look at his contract, he is a top 10 selection, and he was their past administration/HC’s pick.

The new HC is coming in and if the system he is rumored to be looking to run is real, then he wouldn’t want Rosen to run it. Our system however could use him, if the system we are looking to run is what we actually are. Rosen because of being a 10th selection puts his 5th year option as an expensive one, if he was an 11th pick id say that they might ask for a little more because his 5th year option wouldn’t be as expensive.

I dont see that as a far fetched option for us, nor one that the Cardinals might not be looking to, or willing to do. .I think getting Rosen for a 2nd round pick this next draft would be a good risk/reward trade, better than just using a 2nd to select a QB. That would let us focus our top pick on a different position and open the draft strategy up some.

I DO think Rosen is a possible fit for us, although it’s hard to say with zero practices here yet.

Also depends on where his head is. He has a bit of a squirrelly rep to him.
If Flores can slap that pout off his face without having him pull a Jonathan Martin, then he could be very good in Miami.

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sorry Naples, I misunderstood your post. I thought you were suggesting $10.3M for the whole contract, not per year. Yes, I think that’s possible, but demand will tell the final story. If it becomes a bidding war it could escalate into the teens, and then we’ll have to see how much Grier and Co. value him.

  71. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We fans are in a learning curve now. When Gase was hired he wanted to hit the ground running with what we had and add players he thought he could win with. It didn’t work out. The situation now is so different under the transformation of the front office and coaching staff along with the rebuild motto. It’s all on the table. Now is the time to clean house however they want to do it.

I think I may be joining those who say to draft a QB this year and again next year. I feel it is important as ever to find that guy. With a new coaching staff, the faster we find our franchise guy the faster we will vault to the top of the NFL and it won’t be difficult once we find our QB. We are going to wake up one season in the very near future (possibly 2020 and very likely 2021) and most all the names of the top (consistently proven) QB’s will be gone. Many of those teams will be struggling to find their new QB so it is important we do it now. Look at the ages of these guys.
    Brady 42 in Aug.
    Brees 40
    E.Manning 38
    Rivers 38 in Dec
    Roethlisberger 37
    Rodgers 36 in Dec
    Flacco 34
    Matt Ryan 34
These guys will be done in the very near future and these teams will be scrambling to find their next QB. These teams will be stepping all over each other this draft and the next and the next to find their future QB. I originally thought there were only a couple teams who would draft a QB early this year. The more I look at it, even though this is not a stellar QB class, don’t be surprised to see at least the top 5 QB’s gone by the time we pick in the 2nd round.

Kansas City Chiefs – Patrick Mahomes (1st)
Los Angeles Chargers – Philip Rivers (1st)
Denver Broncos – Joe Flacco (1st)
Oakland Raiders – Derek Carr (1st)
Dallas Cowboys – Dak Prescott (4th)
Philadelphia Eagles – Carson Wentz (1st)
Washington Redskins – Alex Smith (1st)
New York Giants – Eli Manning (1st)
Chicago Bears – Mitchell Truibisky (1st)
Minnesota Vikings – Kirk Cousins (4th)
Green Bay Packers – Aaron Rodgers (1st)
Detroit Lions – Matthew Stafford (1st)
New Orleans Saints – Drew Brees (technically 2nd)
Atlanta Falcons – Matt Ryan (1st)
Carolina Panthers – Cam Newton (1st)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jameis Winston (1st)
Los Angeles Rams – Jared Goff (1st)
Seattle Seahawks – Russell Wilson (3rd)
    San Francisco 49ers – Jimmy Garopolo (2nd)
Arizona Cardinals – Josh Rosen (1st)

I see a pretty obvious pattern. Say what ya want about the success and fail of it, but people go for a signal caller in the 1st round to get their franchise guy. You can luck up and get that guy outside the first, but how many players not on that list are outside the first. A LOT, more than were 1sts and arent and not on that list. You have to take a shot on a guy when you have it and you feel that guy might be the next big thing for your franchise. You cant be chicken shit about going for it because it is your best chance to get the biggest person on your team.
