We got a QB!! Welcome to Miami Josh Rosen!

All I asked for was a plan. Even though I belong to one of the the most prestigious Miami Dolphins Fan Blogs, oddly enough I wasn’t privy to the plan. Despite extensive conversations that I’ve had with Chris Grier, he and I are great pals, he never told me. He’s that good! Seriously though, it’s not the guy I wanted, but I’m thrilled to have Josh Rosen as our QB.

Just think how bizarre the circumstances are how Josh Rosen ended up on our roster. The 10th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft to the Arizona Cardinals did not have a great season last year, but when you look at the team he played for, and take into consideration that the HC Steve Wilks was fired after one miserable season, it’s easy to understand what Rosen was up against. Full disclosure, I didn’t want Rosen last year, and I preferred Dwayne Haskins this year, but I reiterate, I’m thrilled he’s a Miami Dolphin.

Josh Rosen is a highly intelligent QB, and that should fit right in with Chad O’Shea and what he wants to accomplish. If we’re following the Patriots model, be smart with the football, don’t turn it over, and get points on every drive. No pressure for Rosen to start immediately, but I’m thinking Fitzmagic is going to have a fight on his hands to start the season. The compensation we gave up is minimal, the #62 pick (practically a 3rd RD pick after our trade down) this year and our 5th RD pick next year. That trade back also netted us a 2020 2nd RD pick in exchange for our 4th RD pick. Well worth it!

Josh Rosen the QB was rated as one of the top QB’s in last years draft, rated by some as the top QB. He’s NFL ready, he knows how to stay in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield, not on the rush. He can process an NFL offense easily with his football intelligence. In 2017 for UCLA, he completed 63% of his passes against the blitz. He doesn’t necessarily have a better than average arm, but neither did Tom Brady, and he turned out OK.

So now we have a super high character, physically talented, dominant DT, and add to him a highly rated QB prospect with one year of NFL experience under his belt (even if it was a miserable year!) In the 3rd RD we selected Wisconsin OG Michael Dieter. 6’5 307, there’s nothing special physically to mention, but the kid can play. He’s played all 3 interior positions at Wisconsin as well as 14 games at LT where he was a first team All Conference pick.

So far I have to say we’ve accomplished an awful lot so far. I honestly wonder what is going on in Josh Rosen’s mind. I hope he embraces this most unique opportunity with unbridled enthusiasm. It’s almost like we saved him, he should feel born again (Not religiously!). I hope he comes here humbled and thankful for a wonderful new start and opportunity. Hopefully he’s our successful starting QB for the next 10-15 years. GO DOLPHINS!

#staythecourse

PS – ARZ has paid all of Josh Rosen’s bonus money, so we’re getting a great financial deal as well!

PPS – Toba – Thanks so much for the photoshopping my friend, I appreciate it man!

I like how he does not get lost in the wash.
Like, there is all this trash and then he is still standing and has very quick first steps to pounce.

  2. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ORob — Michael Deiter has played T, but sounds like G is his best position. I’m not as down on Jessie Davis as you and think will be some stop-gap guys on the line…. but Dieter could end up at RT.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Depends what plans they have for Chris Reed and the AAF guys.
I thought Reed was for depth and those other guys for camp bodies.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gonna be more than a few OL and DE guys on the opening day roster not on the current one. But who thought the trenches would be completely rebuilt in the draft? Way was always gonna be.

Sterup is going to get a shot at RT too.

too far to go to expect any quality now; our last 3 picks are just practice squad level.
    unlesssss ….

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ginkel had a pick 6 against Ohio State

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You are correct Stanger. From late FA you mean? and other teams’ cuts?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Those and think as open as our roster is, particularly at DE and the OL that we will be one of the top choices for UDFAs. Think will be a bunch of them in camp.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    D’Andre Walker gone.

  9. Ginkel projects to be a practice squad guy, unless hes a demon on ST

he isnt very physical, doesnt shed blocks easily, and isnt a good edge rusher either

he also got some bad coaching, so there is a chance he has some upside, time will tell

    • from NFL.com
Van Ginkel is an Unimposing 3-4 outside linebacker with decent athletic ability but a concerning lack of aggression as a run blocker and consistency as a pass-rusher. Van Ginkel has the motor to tally stats with effort and secondary rush, but he needs a better rush plan and more proactive hands to set him up for success in attacking the quarterback. He will need a lot more strength and toughness to hold up as a run defender, but his length and production on special teams could give him a shot at the back end of the roster or on a practice squad.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Where did he get bad coaching?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good answer David….. if you had gone with where he was getting coached the last two years the board could have turned ugly.

      • lol Stanger got my sarcasm and joke. i didnt want to argue, just evaluating the prospect.

actually im not saying he got bad coaching, he just needs better coaching, like NFL coaches to help him bring out better hand skills for his pass rush, therefore I believe He has some upside at the next level.

its not a knock on Wisconsin that the NFL has some damn good coaching

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Van Ginkel earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2018 when he started 11 games and had 46 tackles, seven for loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups and one blocked kick.

In his first year at Wisconsin, he had 6.5 sacks and two interceptions.

Van Ginkel played outside linebacker at Wisconsin and also has a lot of experience on special teams.

He began his college career at the University of South Dakota before moving to Iowa Western Community College and finally Wisconsin.

Van Ginkel graduated in December 2018 with a degree in agricultural business management.

In the 2017 Orange Bowl, he had an interception and a sack against the University of Miami.

      3. I guess the last 2 years under Wisconsin coaching means nothing.

      • lol sorry, it was bad sarcasm, to avoid a big argument about Wisconsin has no coaches, etc

i really wanted to emphasize i feel he has upside, because our coaches can bring out the best in him. this is what You get in the fifth round, diamonds that need polishing

I don’t get spending a 4th round pick on a punter??? Is that really the best player on your board at that moment???

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wisconsin runs a pro set on offense which is why their OL does so well and they run a lot of stunts and loops with their LBs which is why they have good stats without good athleticism.

Seems like van Gink is a smart player with a full motor. Just what we want.
He’s also 240 that runs a 4.56 so that is very annoying for TEs to try to shake off.

  32. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Not a huge fan of Ginkle outside of his name. As mentioned earlier, ST and sub packages which is not starter quality obviously. On the other side of the coin, our mgmt sees huge issues we’ve had for years and is addressing them. We haven’t guarded TEs worth a…darn for years and this guy should be able to do that on 3rd and 10. etc.He should eventually be able to apply some much needed spot pressure and I can only hope he’s half as good as ole Trace Armstrong in that role.

  37. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I like Deiter. He’s not a superb athlete, but he plays with good technique. He is gonna need to get stronger because he’s not great at dealing with power. I think he’s a starter sooner or later. He might be our best guard already, sadly. He’s also played LT, LG and C…and played them all pretty well. I think it’s certainly possible he starts right away, but I think he needs a couple years in the weight room to come into his own.

  42. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Stanger

I don’t think this idea is exclusive to the rebuild

I imagine Jackson has a chart that says: “RT, CB and DE” and he hasn’t been able to check them off – so he’s sad about the draft

Days 1 and 2 it’s legitimate to have an expectation that your draftees will start

But why does a professional sports writer think Flores is going to start a 6th round rookie at CB just bc the vets aren’t all pros?

This deep in the draft teams should be looking for talent that fits what they want to do that they think the can develop – not checking off “oh I got my RT”

The good teams have a tier of players they develop and that’s what this part of the draft is for

Maybe you find the next zach Thomas – but I think odds are pretty low of rhatbkccuring. But maybe you find the next Bobby McCain – that’s realistic

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — completely agree with all of that and think they are doing what needs to be done. Was just looking at from his perspective. We all get our own personal motivations in play, and think he is more “win now” cause of what he does for a living and how his own product is measured at work.

  43. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

prince? Google machine here I come

  44. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  45. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  46. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

So we pick again in 29 picks, lol

  47. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Prince was a three-time All-Washington D.C. Metro pick at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland before heading to Columbus to play for the Buckeyes. The top-100 overall recruit played in all 14 games as a reserve lineman as a true freshman, then moved into the starting lineup for all 13 games at right tackle in 2016. Prince was a 14-game starter on the right side in 2017, using his large frame to earn third-team All-Big Ten honors. He was a team captain and first-team all-conference pick in 2018, starting all 14 games at right tackle.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

coach him up … except for his locked up hips, everything else on his weaknesses list is coachable. … maybe not the stiff legged stance but that is sometimes improvable in the weight room with work on the thighs. Sometimes it’s too genetic, but then that is why he is a RT only.

If he were perfect, he would’ve gone in round 1.
He has some serious historical potential that he has not developed.

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Whoever decided to put Peter Schrager on the draft coverage should be fired.

  49. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Isaiah Prince
    Height: 6’6″
    Weight: 305 pounds
    School: Ohio State Buckeyes

    Combine Performance Data
    40-yard dash: 5.09 seconds
    Bench press: 23 reps
    Vertical jump: 27 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 7 inches (fourth-best among offensive linemen)
    Three-cone drill: 7.90 seconds
    20-yard shuttle: 5.02 seconds

An immensely experienced player who spent four years cutting his teeth against high-level competition, Prince is a physical specimen with a plethora of traits coveted by NFL teams. It includes a set of long arms which suggest he can consistently generate leverage at the point of attack. He’s an incredibly fluid mover who rarely lets speed rushers turn a corner on him. And his competitiveness, as well as his mean streak, should endear him to teammates and coaches alike.

But in order to get to his ceiling, Prince needs to exhibit more play strength on the field. That shortcoming stems from the fact that he struggles to achieve optimum leverage due to lack of knee bend and not dropping his weight. It leads to issues with his anchor and contain and makes him susceptible to getting bullied by elite speed to power conversion. Another thing he must improve upon to become a more complete tackle is playing with more active hands.

All in all, Prince projects as a middle round pick who will likely play on the right-hand side almost exclusively at the next level. Though it’ll take time for him to make his mark in the NFL, all indications are that he has the ability to eventually do so. His pro career may indelibly mirror the trajectory of his college career in that he’ll likely occupy a reserve role early on but grow into a starting-caliber player as his time in the league progresses.

Rosen did say something similar after the last draft. “Nine mistakes were made ahead of me. And I will make sure over the next decade or so that [those teams] will know that they made a mistake.”

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Prince has some long arms, and he’s got some explosion, pretty good broad jump. I hate the 23 reps, but that’s 2 better than Dieter’s. Those guys both need to hit the weight room hard

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

so I was talkiing with my son about that and he was saying “how many times does he need to push back a DL in one play sequence before getting a rest in the huddle?”
If he can do a 1-3 rep max of at least 300 , that is fine and matters more than 35 reps of 225.

  58. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Thing about Prince, Deiter, and even van Ginkel
They competed against the absolute highest level of college players.
Not like we “found a gem [acorn] at Montana State or Marist” like Terence Fede (whom I did like.)

These guys are being judged against Top 10 rated teams.

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – It’s just one metric, one that shows that strength and endurance. It’s definitely not the only factor. I would prefer that OL and DT do at least 25 minimum, but those long arms are something to take into consideration. It’s much harder with 35″ long arms than 32′ arms
