We got a QB!! Welcome to Miami Josh Rosen!

All I asked for was a plan. Even though I belong to one of the the most prestigious Miami Dolphins Fan Blogs, oddly enough I wasn’t privy to the plan. Despite extensive conversations that I’ve had with Chris Grier, he and I are great pals, he never told me. He’s that good! Seriously though, it’s not the guy I wanted, but I’m thrilled to have Josh Rosen as our QB.

Just think how bizarre the circumstances are how Josh Rosen ended up on our roster. The 10th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft to the Arizona Cardinals did not have a great season last year, but when you look at the team he played for, and take into consideration that the HC Steve Wilks was fired after one miserable season, it’s easy to understand what Rosen was up against. Full disclosure, I didn’t want Rosen last year, and I preferred Dwayne Haskins this year, but I reiterate, I’m thrilled he’s a Miami Dolphin.

Josh Rosen is a highly intelligent QB, and that should fit right in with Chad O’Shea and what he wants to accomplish. If we’re following the Patriots model, be smart with the football, don’t turn it over, and get points on every drive. No pressure for Rosen to start immediately, but I’m thinking Fitzmagic is going to have a fight on his hands to start the season. The compensation we gave up is minimal, the #62 pick (practically a 3rd RD pick after our trade down) this year and our 5th RD pick next year. That trade back also netted us a 2020 2nd RD pick in exchange for our 4th RD pick. Well worth it!

Josh Rosen the QB was rated as one of the top QB’s in last years draft, rated by some as the top QB. He’s NFL ready, he knows how to stay in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield, not on the rush. He can process an NFL offense easily with his football intelligence. In 2017 for UCLA, he completed 63% of his passes against the blitz. He doesn’t necessarily have a better than average arm, but neither did Tom Brady, and he turned out OK.

So now we have a super high character, physically talented, dominant DT, and add to him a highly rated QB prospect with one year of NFL experience under his belt (even if it was a miserable year!) In the 3rd RD we selected Wisconsin OG Michael Dieter. 6’5 307, there’s nothing special physically to mention, but the kid can play. He’s played all 3 interior positions at Wisconsin as well as 14 games at LT where he was a first team All Conference pick.

So far I have to say we’ve accomplished an awful lot so far. I honestly wonder what is going on in Josh Rosen’s mind. I hope he embraces this most unique opportunity with unbridled enthusiasm. It’s almost like we saved him, he should feel born again (Not religiously!). I hope he comes here humbled and thankful for a wonderful new start and opportunity. Hopefully he’s our successful starting QB for the next 10-15 years. GO DOLPHINS!

#staythecourse

PS – ARZ has paid all of Josh Rosen’s bonus money, so we’re getting a great financial deal as well!

PPS – Toba – Thanks so much for the photoshopping my friend, I appreciate it man!

“Chandler Cox signed with Auburn in 2015. During the next four years he played in 52 games with 41 career starts. He carried the ball just 11 times, but caught 26 passes for 237 yards. He played fullback, h-back, tight end and even wildcat quarterback at times.”

And what do you want to bet he will be wiling to play STs.

You guys are all smoking crack with this “good draft” talk. The experts down there have already weighed in on it and you are all wrong. Heck even OD has already said all they did was draft a bunch of kids with zero experience……

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I love the Myles Gaskins pick.
He has excellent acceleration, soft hands, ankle-breaking jump-cuts, and balance both to get skinny and to bounce off shoulder bumps.

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Myles Gaskin 5’9″ 205 lbs
    Washington

    Pre-Draft Analysis
Gaskin is an undersized scat back with good burst through the hole. He’s an effective between-the-tackles runner thanks to his patience and instincts. He’s built low to the ground and has good contact balance but lacks core strength. He’s quick enough to separate from coverage, and he has above-average ball skills. He has average top-end speed, but he’s not a threat to pull away. He’s not big or strong enough to anchor in pass protection.

    William Hayes … no really

  16. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Honestly enjoyed this draft. 4 potential starters and 2 possibilities as future starters after development. Love that it looks like we’re truly going to try and be versatile w/ the game plan and also use the SFla weather to our advantage w/ a physical run game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Looks like we’re going to see a lot more 2-TE and FB smash mouth football in the game plan. That’s another way to help your OL, QB and defense. We’re going to have a lot more check down options to move the chains. We also have enough skill players to take it to the house too.

I think this team will be better than people think. It’s not championship caliber and probably not playoff bound, but somewhere in the 6-10 to 8-8 range. There’s too much talent to totally suck IMO.

He’ll hide, then when you find him, he’s already past you.
He’ll leak out and catch a sack saving outlet pass.
He’ll catch a screen and slip through a space in the DL for a first down.

Predicting more pick 6s and more long TDs given up than last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree. Lots of mix and match personnel and schemes. Jerome Baker might lead the team in sacks as a blitzer due to his speed.

An example of how the Pats look at matchups.
Against big physical teams who like to run the ball and play more conservative, Chase Allen will be more active. Against teams who like to throw more and use more razzle dazzle, Andrew Van Ginkel is more active. Alonso, Baker and McMillan are always active.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really believe 2019 is for Flores and his staff to learn the team and go through a season. Then determine who fits and who doesn’t while also realizing what we have to have. That’s why 2020 is important. It’s the next step towards becoming a contender. Lots of cap space and draft capital to not just fill out the roster like this year, but to upgrade it to a legitimate team. We’re in 1996 Jimmy Johnson mode right now.

He and his staff really need to have the first year eval in real time, game-day mode to see what he really has as his “core” team. My take on our 3rd day Draft class…

Wish we could have landed a solid pass-rushing DE, and we just missed out when Green Bay took Kingsley Keek right before we took Andrew Van Ginkel, who I LIKE(!). Not our fault that the Packers capitalized before we picked.

I’m a little miffed that the Stealers* beat us to Sutton Smith and Isaiah Buggs, but again, not our fault the Stealers* capitalized before we picked. I wish we could/would have addressed RT earlier than round 6, and I’m not impressed with Isaiah Prince. I am happy that we DID address RT at all, and hopefully Prince can stick. We’ll see.

7th round… ummm, okay. Don’t like that we passed on CB Stephen Denmark (he went 4 picks later to the Bears), and I’m not thrilled with either of Chandler Cox or Myles Gaskin… I’d rather we have selected RB Xavier Turner (went UDFA to the Cardinals). Hey, this is the 7th round, and it’s not going to define our overall Draft. I’m not going to put too much weight into this thing.

My take on our overall Draft class: A-

    NOT TOO SHABBY, Chris Grier!!!

Provided we can field even an average RT and/or RG, our O-Line should be considerably better with the addition of Michael Deiter (STUD!!!) at LG and Daniel Kilgore at C (coming back from an early, season-ending injury last year). Laremy Tunsil (IMO) is about to become a Pro-Bowler this year.

This, in turn, should help the development of Josh Rosen… and what a very intelligent and experienced vet he has to learn from this year behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. Good trade for Rosen, especially after getting an additional 2nd rounder next year from the Saints.

I think most of us LOVE(!) the addition of Christian Wilkins, me included! He’s a slamdunk acquisition, but allow me to throw caution to the air: he’d better not turn into a diva. I don’t think he will (or at least hope not), but his charisma factor is off the charts… that’s both good and bad, as we all should realize. As of now, I’m THRILLED he’s a Phin!!! HELL YEAH!!!

It’s too early to call a Draft class a success, for most of us know it’s going to take about 3 years to make an honest, realistic assessment of matters. But on paper — in the HERE and NOW — I think we killed this Draft. Next year, we’ll add even MORE pieces to this puzzle that figures to be a contender much sooner than expected… at least the way I see it.

    GO PHINS!!!
    HELL YEAH!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I prefer Wilkins’ attitude as opposed to Jordan Phillips who was a wet rag most of the time and would dry once in awhile. 😉

Wilkins reminds me of someone the Steelers or Ravens would draft and be a core DL and voice of their defense for a decade. Minkah is that same type of guy in the back end.

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m not sure what’s in the Dolphins’ beat writers’ water, but it’s not good. Even I… who generally is a cynic of our Draft classes in the moment, can see the bright side of the decision-making.

I’m certainly no ‘pom pom waving cheerleader’ when it comes to these things, but the beat writers are really embarrassing this franchise with their ‘hot takes’ this year. I LIKE this class!

I agree mf13ss about an edge or quality DE. We still need that as far as I’m concerned and is one of the cornerstones to round out the building of a top 10 D.

I’m not nearly knowledgeable enough about who to pick or not. I just read and if I’ve seen a player play in the SEC or Big 12 I can sometimes have an opinion. Outside of that I’m just hoping and praying our coaches / evaluators know what they are doing.

We needed a disruptive IDL….the experts and our staff say Wilkins is one of the best out of college. I’m hoping he will be pro Bowl best for us, etc. We need 4/5s of an OL. We potentially protected the QBs blindside with Tunsil and Deiter. Don’t know about Prince, but he came from Power 5 conference and hope he keeps getting better.

I just want a winning team again and think we’ve made some smart moves and seem to be making some good calls all the way around.

Thing about Wilkins is, after he scored a legit TD rushing at Clemson that they actually needed, he said hey coach how about me blocking (which he had also done in a legit fashion) for my buddy on the DL so he can score one, too.

  95. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In this day and age of college football where players are skipping bowl games to prepare for the draft and being extra cautious with injuries to protect themselves for their futures, Christian Wilkins’ mindset is the opposite.

“He loves it. He is just a guy that truly, truly enjoys every day. He likes practice. He likes meetings. He likes the training in the summer. And he has rubbed off on so many people during his time here,” Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said. “He believes he can do anything. He really thinks that way.”

The motivation behind Wilkins contributing in so many ways is that he wants to win.

Yes, Wilkins came back to school to improve his draft stock, but he also came back to try to lead Clemson to another national title.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He had his degrees all done as well and looked for something else to do in the offseason so he became a sub-teacher. We drafted him because of his talent as a DL, but also because new DL coach Marion Hobby knew who he was as a person. He’s Infectious.

There is something to “he’s a good fit for us”.

With Kelly Bryant, Hunter Johnson, Zerrick Cooper and Tucker Israel all transferring since the end of the 2017, Clemson does not have much depth at quarterback. Wilkins believes he can help.

Wilkins said last week that he has been staying after practice working on his passes and taking snaps so that “when my number’s called I’m ready.” He also said that he is going to speak with Swinney’s wife – Kathleen – so that she can push Dabo to give Wilkins a shot.

Wilkins believes getting to score a rushing touchdown was Swinney’s way of offering a compromise, but it’s not going to work.

“I know Coach, this was kind of just for Coach to shut me up because I’ve been in his ear a lot about playing quarterback or getting on offense,” Wilkins said. “But I’m still going to be at him next week and the week after and the week after that until he lets me play quarterback.”

Swinney was asked Tuesday if Wilkins could throw a pass later on this season and did not rule out the possibility.

“Hey man, you never know. Never know,” Swinney replied.

For a player who has contributed so much for Clemson in so manyways, it would be fitting for Wilkins to get at least a couple of plays in at quarterback before the end of the 2018 season. He’s done everything else.
