Mandatory mini camp is now over, big tests will come in training camp

HC Brian Flores was happy to escape the first mandatory workouts without injury. So much so, he gave the team the day off once they completed their conditioning tests, cancelling today’s practice. Smart move for the young coach. End it on a high note, everyone is healthy. If you expected heated battles the last couple of days, that’s not what the mini camp was about. It’s beginning to lay a foundation of how things are done, and a little experimentation as well, but not a whole lot can be gleaned from practices without pads, so we’ll all have to be patient until the end of July when training camp comes around.

I’m looking forward to training camp, there should be some great competition this season. With a new Head Coach, there are no favorites, or as Coach Flores puts it “No sacred cows”. Everyone has a clean slate, so starting positions will be earned, no resting on laurels. We’ll get a much better idea as to where the QB’s are after training camp. I expect Josh Rosen to close the gap some, and then continue to do so through the preseason. The O-line is pretty much wide open with the exception of LT Laremy Tunsil. Should be some good battles between 3rd RD pick Michael Deiter and Chris Reed at LG. Daniel Kilgore will battle it out with Ryan Anderson and Chris Reed can also play C. Right guard looks to be Jesse Davis fighting it out with Shaq Calhoun and Kyle Fuller. Jesse Davis will likely be in the mix at RT as well along with veteran Jordan Mills and Zach Sterup.

On defense, so many things are happening with many players playing multiple positions. Seems like every S with also at a minimum be playing LB as well, and MInkah Fitzpatrick will be playing safety, slot corner, possibly outside corner as well as LB too. Many of the DT’s will also be playing DE in 3-4 alignments (Vincent Taylor, Davon Godchaux and rookie Christian Wilkins). A trio of LB’s return (Alonso, Baker and McMillan) plus returnees Chase Allen, Mike Hull and Quentin Poling. We should see participation from rookie Andrew Van Ginkle as well as Tyrone Holmes, Tre Watson and Sam Egauvoen. Charles Harris will hopefully flourish rushing the passer from both 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB. Newcomers like Tank Carradine, Nate Orchard and Adolphus Washington will be in competition with Jonathan Woodard, Jonathan Ledbetter and Dewayne Hendrix.

I haven’t come to any conclusions from the mini camp, it’s just a starting point. The real work starts when the pads come on and at that point, things will start shaping up from there.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Sonny, not to take away from your malaise, but I hurt my back weightlifting last week (Wednesday) and have been in constant pain in my back, hip, butt and thigh on my right side. Yesterday was the first day where it didn’t kill me all day, it started to let up a bit in the afternoon. Today it’s back, but not as high on the pain scale, so I’ve been out of it this whole week.

Mike E — last place to turn for medical advice is the board, but think Son is exactly right. Had similar symptoms after a pop in my lower back. Showed up to OD’s tailgate limping and when told them what had been going on — 3 of them all at once said “sciatica.” Told my Doc on the next visit and she said “well they called that one right.” Ibuprofen is great.

Mike E — could not agree more about doesn’t matter all that much till the pads go on. Particularly in the trenches, but goes to the other guys too. No pads means no running game involved as far as I am concerned. Might explain why they do a lot of redzone stuff in OTAs. You are 3rd and goal from the 9 and maybe one place where least more realistic.

This is almost like they were responding to my comments the other day about Spence lol.

“The Dolphins parted ways with Cameron Wake, Robert Quinn and Andre Branch and retained only one of their incumbent defensive linemen who’s 27 or older: Akeem Spence.

    Why was Spence retained?

“He’s athletic, strong, a hard worker,” Flores said. “He works as hard as anyone on this team. He’s had some success in this league. We want to keep good players around.””

My phone broke so far insurance has not delivered a new phone in 11 days. My computer broke too. Took it to the geek squad earlier this evening. I’m broke too, I tripped over a box of tile a couple of nights ago and landed hard on my right shoulder, on lots of meds right now. Almost done with my bathroom bedroom remodel. Move back in to our room again this weekend.
Busy and pain but otherwise fine. If I was a pitcher this shoulder probably ended my season.

Ive always considered Pearl Harbor day to b the biggest event, because like Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said “Today I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” To me that defined America as the strong force against tyranny that we have always been. Its the point at whcih the US stood with the rest of the world to put an end to things. It definately opened the way to the commitment of ourselves at D-Day, and the rest of the times we have committed ourselves and our soldiers to help the rest of the world.

    • D's avatar D says:

He said the scene getting off the boats on the D-Day landing is not too different from what it was like on some of the pacific landings. He also said the conditions just like the temperature was brutal, he said they would put water in their helmets that they had dug down in the sand and they could actually heat soup in water heated from the sand. He also said the bugs and snakes were a big issue, some of the guys died from snakes bites or had to leave on medical because of malaria, etc. He said it was a very miserable place to be.

Oh and then there were the snipers and tunnel systems. Massive game 5 tonight in Boston. If the Blues can stay out of the penalty box, I like their chances. They have been the dominant team when playing 5 on 5. The Bruins have been most effective in odd-man situations. Their power play has been lethal, and if the Blues aren’t disciplined, then odds favor the Bruins.

Whichever team wins tonight does not have the series locked up. Both teams have come back from 3-2 deficits in these playoffs. The Bruins against the Mapleleafs, and the Blues against the team I thought would knock them out, the Stars. No matter what happens tonight, I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t go 7 games.

Man just saw about 4-5 big crows or maybe they’re ravens crowing about in a big tree because one of them caught and killed what looked like a young squirrel because it was smaller than your typical sized adult. Poor little one. I’ve been seeing bigger crows recently and I’ve been wondering okay where did these come from. They’re almost double the size of the typical crows I see. But I’ve seen bigger ravens than even these.

  20. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    From the article above:

Sure, we can state the obvious and say that Kenyan Drake is a much better running back than Kalen Ballage; you would receive no qualms from a single Dolphins fan about that statement.

I think I know at lease one fan that will give you qualms about that statement. (he misused the phrase so, so am I)

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ballage doesn’t have enough body of work to be considered better than Drake. Many of us have different opinions of Drake but one thing we all know is he is a big time playmaker and a versatile football player – rush, receive, block, STs (KR and coverage).

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, yeah that’s why I asked. D’s grandfather saw plenty of horrors in the Pacific. But the Saving Private Ryan comment made me think he was there too.

    • D's avatar D says:

He saw it at his house and im kinda glad about that, because the day i went to see it at the theater i saw men his age have to get up and leave because it upset them so bad. Like i said, there were definitely differences from the rocky cliffs of Normandy that gave the Germans vantage over the lading forces, and the more ground level that a lot of the island landings happened. He related that the landings often were like shooting fish in a barrel because of those vehicles, same as is seen on SPR. He said those gates drops and people started dying.

Regardless of the campaign, i completely agree with the greatest generation statement because the horrors endured, are unimaginable. The bravery that those guys had, pushing forward while knowing what they were going into, again, unfathomable. The sacrifice, of mother, fathers and wives of that generation, unrecoverable.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah man, totally agreed. I’ve been seeing family and friends posting about it all day with loved ones who lived it, made it and didn’t. War is a really ugly thing.

  22. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Generally Crows are much smaller than Ravens. A full grown crow can bet as big as 17″ long. Ravens get as large as 27″ long. (if you don’t know what 10″ is look down and then double it LOL)

One of the most interesting differences is crows live about 8 years. Ravens live 30 years or more.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, these guys were closer to 20″ for sure. Some bigger than others.

Do you think a crows lifespan is less because they’re smaller and become prey more often than the bigger raven, or do you think it’s a genetic thing?

  23. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    LOL @ Mike E

I think it’s probably a genetic thing kind of like parrots 🦜 live 70-80 years

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    LOL @ this from Corvid research;

    1) What is the difference between a crow and a raven? While crows and ravens are in the same family, corvidae, and look quite similar, they are as different from one another as lions and tigers. If you’re not used to seeing ravens, the best way to tell them apart is if you’re at higher elevation or in a more rural or coastal area and find yourself thinking “that’s the biggest #$%^&*# crow I’ve ever seen!”, you’re probably looking at a raven. More scientifically, ravens have diamond shaped tails in flight, deeper almost croak-like voices and are about 2.5x as big as a crow.

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tim, on the ground you can tell the difference because Ravens have a distinctive walk they kind of walk walk hop walk walk hop hop. Crows just strut

Also crows tend to congregate in larger groups (a murder) and ravens travel alone or in pairs.

You guys should watch the HBO series The Pacific. Brutal. And D, I can’t think of a single flat island in the Pacific. Look up Saipan’s Suicide Cliffs sometime. They do have beaches, but the Japanese fortified and occupied the high ground, using the beach approaches as fire sacks ( killing fields). Your Grandpa is a badass. And Okinawa was particularly bad.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I did watch that. It confirmed Quint (Jaws) delivering the bomb for me. The death tolls of war are horrific. But that Pacific theater as they call it… would have been millions dead and non-stop carnage for years.

Great game going on in Boston. Boston started strong and controlled most of the play in the 1st period but couldn’t get past Binnington. Blues scored early in the 2nd with a nifty backhand by O’Reilly, and play evened out.

Blues up 1-0 going into the 3rd. It’s going to be a dogfight!

Tons of props to Bruins defenseman Chara, who is playing with a broken jaw sustained in game 4. The guy has put his body on the line and blocked 3 shots in 2 periods (I think). If I wasn’t a Blues fan, I’d probably be rooting for the Bruins just because of him. Although, then again maybe not since Marchand is such a fucking douchebag.

The biggest difference IMO, has been the Blues penalty kill, which hasn’t given up a goal since game 3.

he’s short compact and tough, drake runs too upright to get the tough yards. he gets stuffed at the LOS too much putting the offense in predictable passing situations, a recipe for disaster.
it’s all about production on 1st down and drake can not deliver.

Is that a picture from this year or last year. If its last year they made him do it, because they were trying to teach him to hold on to the ball. Condition his hands to hold on to it. If thats from this year then he probably carried over that training from last year. It did though start as something he started last year because the coaches made him.

Its not a bad idea, its both a mental and physical conditioning for holding on to the ball. McMillan

  67. its a common mistake to assume that players are paid millions, so they shouldnt have any issues

    lol

so if they were paid less, they would get more respect from others?
there have been fans that said they can call a player racist names .

no one, not a soul has ever claimed NBA players dont make more money than slaves, the complaint isnt about money, its about respect for others, human rights

if Your boss gave You an extra 200 an hour, would he or she have the right to treat u subhuman, because of the money?
would u work there, knowing insane money can be made elsewhere, and u get respect also?

money cannot buy a mans soul, the ones forcing this issue, have a problem with millionaires that air grievances

  99. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t really agree with you about the word “owner” David

It’s worth noting – it’s not really a movement or anything

Last year Draymond Green mentioned it in response to the Houston owner analogy of players making rules as “can’t have inmates running the prison”

Which I think most reasonable people agree is a shitty way to describe employees

And then it took on a life of its own and here we are with the nba thinking about changing its own terminology

But it’s just semantics at the end of the day
Not really so related to civil rights –
Maybe it’s related to how people think

But we use that term in our society in a lot of non-discriminatory ways

Snoop dog (another great political mind…lol) recently said he liked the word “he owns his shit”

If you are really serious about civil rights
It’s wise not to make a mountain out of molehill

I don’t think the word “owner” for a sports CEO warrants a lot of attention

And you also run into some problems when describing certain interests in a team
How do you describe some one who owns a minority share of the team without the word “owner”

Before Ross “owned” the Miami Dolphins he shared ownership with Huzienha for a year owning 50% for 1 year

I don’t know how to describe it and avoid the word owner…lol

So it’s not a very pragmatic change for something that has minimal or nominal harm

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There’s no good reason to change it. It’s just another case of people being butthurt by nonsensical shit and then everybody has to change what they do and say, the PC nonsense. It’s beyond ridiculous. People own things, you don’t want to work for a business owned by white people then don’t work there. It’s pretty simple.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

As a practical matter it’s impossible to change it
People are obviously going to keep using that word

I get being more sensitive to language

But I think this one is a little “off” in terms of whether it’s offensive

I will say, It is kind of an “old timey” word – that’s not about sensitivity just accuracy

There’s a lot of complex ownership structures
And teams are really franchises as part of league or associations anyway

Who owns the Green Bay Packers
Some people say the fans own it but technically it’s a publicly held nonprofit that no one owns

I don’t think characterizing the use of the word as racially discriminatory is accurate though – it’s not like they don’t use it in the nhl which is mostly white

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I don’t think it is really about hating the word owner. More about a bunch of very rich black guys resenting that the teams they play for are owned by even richer white guys even though they think of it as “their sport” and realize those guys are making a lot of money off of it.

In some ways they might have a point, but put the whole slavery analogy in there and what would not other hit the news ends up what we are talking about in places like this. As has been shown on social media countless times, something doesn’t have to be correct to make an impact.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, black guys playing in a league run by white owners and a white commissioner who promote the game very well so they can make millions of dollars. True?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        That’s a good point

But i still think it’s a bit over the top for my taste

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Didn’t say agreed with them, just pointing out what that outlandish analogy is really about. Personally, think they should feel blessed rather than bitching about it. And if they want to be a team owner then buy a team.
