Player Spotlight : CB Eric Rowe

We have X on one side, that much is a given. The way the Dolphins have chosen to finish the equation is X + R = CB Bliss. It’s actually a big risk. Rowe has been a part time player for the first 4 years of his career. He was drafted in the 2nd RD in 2015 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Rowe played in all 16 games for the Eagles in his rookie year, starting 5. New England was in need of a CB in 2016 and sent a conditional 4th RD pick in 2018, which at best could have turned into a 3rd RD pick if performance measures were met. Why did Philly give up on their guy so quickly, so much so that they had to wait 2 years to get compensation back for him? Very odd.

At the NFL combine, Rowe was a monster. He ran 4.45 at 6’1 205, a 3.97 20 YD shuttle which is super quick for a guy that size, a 6.70 cone drill which shows elite agility and a 39″ vertical which shows elite explosion.. Maybe that’s why Philly took him in the 2nd RD, he Mike Mamula’d them. They pretty much gave up on the guy after one season.

Rowe started only 12 games in 3 seasons for the Patriots and played in 21 games. I’m not saying Eric Rowe can’t be the guy, but so far 2 teams, and make that 2 very solid organizations like the Eagles and Patriots can’t find a way to get this guy to work, it’s a little disconcerting. He has played well in practice and looked good in the preseason so far, but it just shows how poor our quality depth is at CB at the moment after Xavien Howard. Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis, Chris Lammons, Cordrea Tankersley and David Rivers. Chris Lammons has flashed some but is anyone here confident that he can handle the pressure of being picked on constantly as teams avoid throwing to the side X is on? That’s a lot to handle.

Some guys develop late, some guys just need the right opportunity to shine. It looks like Rowe is going to be given every opportunity and more to seize the job opposite X so it won’t be for a lack of chances that he doesn’t succeed here. Eric Rowe was a starter at CB in college at Utah. Who was that big Utah CB we had here that everyone loved? Was it Sun Sentinel, er Sean Smith? Smith was a lightning rod. Some hated him, some defended him. My recollection is I was a Sean Smith sympathizer. I thought he was unfairly treated by the haters although he was never a great player for us. He was at the very least a serviceable player for us. Smith started 56 games in 4 seasons for us. Can Rowe give us anything like that? The SS haters will hate this statement, but if Rowe can be as good as Sean Smith, I think we’ve done well.

“They said I won’t be traded this year” is the paste already had after the cut. Does sound like the right trade offers just weren’t there. He’s cuttable next year though, which feel cruel saying since like the player.

  2. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

That was interesting. Philly traded up with us to draft Rowe in the 2nd round giving us their 4th round pick which we used to draft Ballage and now we have Rowe also.

My completely unfounded trade rumor that would make sense: Eli to Indy

So Luck pulls a Larry Csonka and goes to play in the XFL.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Can’t he is still under contract with the Colts

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        XFL is not NFL,
so that contract thing does not apply, right?
I mean he could go work for Wal Mart ,right?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No the Colts still have the contractual rights to him regardless of what league he is in. If he plays football in the CFL or XFL they would have to come to terms with the Colts. When Csonka, Kiick and Warfield went to the WFL they were not under contract

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He can go work for Walmart because he is not playing football

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It really depends on the contract language

I don’t think, unless xfl and nfl have a deal, the contract with the colts necessarily prevents him from playing in the xfl or another league – but that’s not a simple answer

I managed to find the nfl contract online
        https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1573683/000104746913009713/a2216998zex-10_3.htm

I think this is just the nfl standard contract and the teams have other contracts

And yeah it prevents him from playing football anywhere else

If luck did that the colts may have remedies for breach of contract, but preventing him from entering into another contract in another league is probably not one of them

I’m pretty sure Luck can say, sue me Colts and just play in the xfl in spite of the breach

If that happens I can imagine the colts and the nfl going to court to seek injunctive relief and stop it from happening (claiming he agreed not to) – I’m just not sure that’s enforceable

I doubt that plays out though

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        PIggy:
The Colts can move for injunctive relief to enforce the non compete clause which would prevent Luck from playing for another team unless the Colts agreed to some form of compensation from that team. This is exactly how it works in MLB when they sign from the Japanese league

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But I don’t think the order of an injunctive relief in a certainty to occur

      Noncompete clauses aren’t exactly foolproof

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

In sports contracts they are pretty bulletproof. As I said in MLB specifically to negotiate with a Japanese player you have to pay the Japanese team for the rights to negotiate and potentially sign the player. It would be no different in football

  5. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Ultimately I think the Colts do nothing but tank for Tua

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Indy does not need a starting QB. Brissett will do just fine.
    Jnless he doesn’t.
in which case they have a high draft pick and get a shiny new rookie.
    “Fuck it for Frommmmmm”
    is the Colts new mantra.

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Vegas had the Colts over/under at 9.5…… tied for 5th in the NFL.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

let the dust settle and take the over, brissett and reich won’t go down easy

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That was the number from before. Will be interested in what the new one is. How much was Luck worth?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I understand that and everyone probably scrambled to take the under, now vegas will have to drop it real low to offset the bets, all they want is to have as much winners as losers and take the vig.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Guess it would depend on how quick they reacted. If took the bet off the board soon as the news hit should be left with even amounts at the first number and now just have to re-set…. and do it again with a new number that evens out.

I’m beginning to think Flores is dekin everybody about Rosen
and he has been planning to start him all along.
Then right after i type that I think
No, Rosen will not play until he’s “ready.”

Then I think there is a “Grand Plan,” like “Play Rosen after the bye, no matter what.”
Or “Play Fitz until the magic turns tragic. then go to Rosen.”

What would be cool is if they do the same pattern in the Regular season they have done in the preseason, which is to start Fitz so we don’t give the game away early, then bring in Rosen all fresh and having watched on the sideline and BOOM we win in the 4th.

But that only works in college, i guess.

I think it’s gong to be a good fight to the finish. The Cards and Cubs have both been streaky this year. It seems to me like all season we win 5 of 6, then lose 4 of 5. I think we’ll swap the division lead a few more times before it’s all said and done. Heck, the Brewers have been hanging around all season too, and may still have something to say.

Here is my take on Luck. He heas a right to his life and the direction he takes it and he shouldn’t be booed or disrespected for it. Still fandom is akin to the days when people use to go to the arenas for gladiator events. There is little care for the participants and humanity has shown time and again to be selfish, self-gratifying and callous when it comes to it’s heros. The word hero might as well be removed and replaced with the real world we already have for it. Slavery.

    • D's avatar D says:

I don’t blame the fans for acting like that because that’s the people that most of society is. It’s ugly, but that’s reality.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

.. I originally brought up the XFL because Jerry Jones in his reaction to Luck retiring said “ I hope he goes on to be POTUS.. I recalled his dad Oliver had been in politics and googled to see what became of him , and was surprised to see he was CEO/Commissioner of XFL …The XFL model is , from what I hear, set up as all players are hired by the League, and not to a very high salary which is same for either everyone or same for all positions.. once the league has hired the players , they will have a draft to disperse players to teams.. and they don’t play until next year.. Andrew will not get rich playing there, but with his dad running the show , if he finds he misses playing or being involved, it could be a future option for him … if the league lasts that long

Yet the QB rating was 64.6. Seems to me that you should get more credit when the ball isn’t thrown your way, because you may actually be covering someone.

Defensive stats for QB rating is ass backwards. They should figure in how many times you’re in coverage, then get additional points for incomplete when thrown to your man and ints, but points removed for catches and yards (with short/negative receptions a plus and also a plus for short receptions on 3rd down not resulting in 1st downs).

Spain’s hold on Florida was tenuous in the years after American independence, and numerous boundary disputes developed with the United States. In 1819, after years of negotiations, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams achieved a diplomatic coup with the signing of the Florida Purchase Treaty, which officially put Florida into U.S. hands at no cost beyond the U.S. assumption of some $5 million of claims by U.S. citizens against Spain.

So any of Lammons, Armstrong or whoever else survives the cuts as the 6th DB

There’s likely 20 sub packages we’ll be using, so each guy will have a role somewhere at sometime.

If it works out well with McCain at FS, we surely needed more of a coverage guy back there, then Flores really does know what he’s doing.

I feel like the move was predicated on Flores wanting the larger Minkah closer to the LOS.

If it doesn’t work we can always switch them back and may from time to time based on matchups.

I think TJ didn’t really fit what they wanted to do. We all thought he would fit the multiples thing because we see him as a hybrid LB/S but it must be that he hasn’t really shown he could be that guy, or that they would rather have a hawk in the secondary than a mountain ram. They seem to prioritize pass defending skills, and truthfully i would tend to agree. I dont want the guy at the back half of my defense being the guy im prioritizing to make the tackles. Id hope my LB’s would be the primary ones in that group, preferably DT’s and DE’s but there are reasons their tackle number are generally low.

D, I don’t get how you invoke the word slavery to guys who of their own free will play a sport and become multi millionaires. Fans are pissed off because they lost their starting QB 2 weeks before the season is about to start.

Go read it again, he’s not talking about for the players, but through the eyes of the fans. It’s how the fans portray the players. Its skin to he was my hero while he was a Colt and as soon as he’s gone he’s a bum.

Thanks for the assist Steve, and yeah you are spot on. its more how its so easy to dispose and move on and forget these guys are human. It is a business and sometimes they do get treated poorly being cut or whatnot, but i just think we as fan forget sometimes these are human beings too. That wasnt an easy decision for Luck, so he has the weight of his decision already laid heavy on him and then fans just throw more bricks on the load as they walk him to the door.

I’m guessing Lammons’ versatility, Flores special, has earned him a spot on 53.

Jones SS and some LB, McCain FS aand CB, Lammons S and CB, X is X, DTs seem to be interchangeable all over the line, Harris DE and LB, Baker all over the field, E coverage, blitz, run stuff,

    Minkah defense

Flores has already put his stamp on this D.

I really like Wingfield’s breakdown on plays. Could you imagine if Omar tried to do that for us on Rosen’s scramble and long completion to Ford.

“Notice how New Bea dropped back to far allowing pressure to get to him. Would have been a sack but the defensive player had an off night. If Ford hadn’t made a huge play by continuing his route, New Bae would have taken a sack or thew an INT. LOL

Every week in preseason different guys have flashed that weren’t on the team last year. Does anyone remember this many new guys flashing in preseason like this before? Is it because we have so many new guys or because Flores knows how to use players to their strengths?

Who will be the guy this week?

  92. players arent as much slaves as we are,

the matrix and government enslaves us all with oppressive taxation without representation,.and corporations expect us to work for almost nothing, while CEO’s take the majority of the money

but players are bought and sold like slaves, and often not respected or treated as equal humans

what if Murray says i would rather play for Atlanta, can he just go there?,
no need to answer that one,
He HAS to go to Arizona to receive his punishment for being the best college player

  93. i bought a coffee this morning and the waitress was complaining her manager was cheating her on her hours

waitresses make less than minimum wage i n FL, and yet the companies cant even pay that?

the employer must pay tipped employees a direct wage that equals the Florida minimum wage minus the 2003 tip credit. Accordingly, the minimum wage for tipped employees in Florida will increase to $5.44 per hour in January 2019

if a company has to cheat hours of someone making $5.44 an hour, WTF

the blue haired manager came over and asked how i was doing, lol big mistake

i said Good morning Cruella Deville, , i am fine because i DONT work for You

  94. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

TJ cut shocked me, especially given the contract. And the guy could close and hit. Perfect for a zone scheme.

Same time remember how Jones sulked cause wasn’t playing every snap? He should be close to that now.

    • the Fins have cheaper options than Mcdonald, so of course they are going cheap

cheaper options are always preferred over pricey veterans in Miami, we have seen dozens of veterans released over the years because we were too cheap to pay them

here come the salary cap excuses, but when is the last time Miami was in cap trouble?

and why do our players leave for more money, and other teams have more money than we do?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — yes here come the salary cap excuses. They paid a million in cap to have him not play for us this season.

And Ross is not cheap. You can bash him in any way you want but not for that. Spends every single cent allowed on the roster. Many owners don’t do that.

      • are we in salary cap trouble this year?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This is a very ignorant post. We were in cap hell to start the league year.

It’s not about being cheap, it’s about managing the cap. What do you think they’re talking about when they say a team has a big advantage when their QB is on his rookie contract?

If we were cheap we wouldn’t carry over cap from year to year, the team has spent as much as they were allowed and even more if you count the stadium renovations.

Please describe how the team is being cheap?

  95. actually Miami ISNT in cap trouble, we have 22 million available

    https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/miami-dolphins/

so cutting Mcdonald has NOTHING to do with getting us out of trouble, we arent there

but everything to do with being cheap

  96. steve, no need to be ignorant on the cap space, google it

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That has nothing to do with it. TJ was cut, because he didnt fit with what Flores was trying to do and didn’t want to hold a roster spot for him at the expense of another player that fits.

As for the cap space, we actually took a hit on the cap to get rid of him.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d actually like to think they cut him cause there was no way he’d ever fit in the new scheme and were willing to do him a favor to get him somewhere his skills would fit.

  97. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Long as Ross keeps carrying the cap over from year to year….. just think of it like a bank account. Don’t spend it now…. it’s there for later.

  98. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I like McDonald, but he has always been considered a liability in coverage and Miami already has a box safety in Jones. With the premium they seem to be putting on coverage skills and their inability to cover TE and RB in previous years, McDonald’s release isn’t that surprising. Nothing to do with salary or cap, just doesn’t have the skillset to fit this defense.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Surprising cause they are paying a million in cap over his 2019 number not to have him on the team. But yeah that is why not about salary or cap on steroids. Still think he would be good in a read and react zone scheme….. and man can he lay dudes out.
