Dolphins make some surprise cuts – Look to potentially add DE Jadeveon Clowney in a trade with Texans

As you all probably know already, the Dolphins made some cuts yesterday, not reporting this, just recapping what’s happened. One of the bigger surprises was cutting DT Akeem Spence who we picked up last year from Detroit for a conditional 2019 7th RD pick. Also somewhat a surprise was cutting safety T.J. McDonald. Not surprising was parting ways with OL Will Holden (Not to be confused with actor William Holden). We also waived OT Jordan Mills who when we first picked him up after Buffalo released him I thought he may be our starting RT this season. The way he performed for us in practice and in the preseason made it clear that wasn’t going to happen. Also waived were LB Chase Allen, and veteran TE Clive Walford.

Now to the big news. The Dolphins met with Jadeveon Clowney yesterday, although Clowney did not deem the Miami Dolphins originally as a potential suitor. He preferred the Seattle Seahawks, but after meeting with Dolphins HC Brian Flores, his opinion may have changed. At the moment, it actually seems as if the Dolphins are the team most likely to land Clowney, but at what price? Keep in mind, the price is two-fold. We have to trade talent to the Texans in exchange for Clowney, and then we have to pay Clowney. He signed a 1 year deal worth just under $16M, but what happens after this season? Therein lies the rub . . .

I had to drive from one office to another yesterday and I had the pleasure of catching some good dialogue between NFL Radio hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller. Pat Kirwan is not the foremost authority on everything NFL, but as a former HC and NFL GM, he’s well respected in NFL circles. Kirwan was very much against the Dolphins acquiring Clowney and made some excellent points. He was saying that Clowney hasn’t been a premier player while playing with J.J. Watt. This reminds me of tha situation the Dolphins had years ago. Flash back to the year 2002 when the Dolphins had Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye. That year, Taylor had 18.5 sacks, Ogunleye chipped in with 9.5 sacks. This is a similar situation, it really is. Clowney having the benefit of possibly the most disruptive defensive player in the game hasn’t ever achieved double digits in sacks. BTW, Ogunleye only achieved double digit sacks once with CHI, and only once (10) in 2005. Granted, Watt hasn’t been able to stay healthy, but I’m loathe to give Clowney a huge contract when he’s never been a game changer. He’s young, he’s only 26, but where’s the beef? Understood he was injured his 1st season in 2014, and maybe had a hangover from that injury in 2015. Where’s the explosive stats after that? 24.5 sacks in 3 seasons. Sure, it’s better than what we have, but is it worthy of trading top talent away and then backing up a Brinks truck and paying him handsomely after too? I wouldn’t do it. 2015 Watt had 17.5 sacks and FIFTY QB hits. Clowney?4.5 sacks, 8 QB hits.

To me this more about getting a name than production, and as Naples mentioned, all too similar to acquiring Ndamukong Suh. I know we need help at DE, I’d rather run with the young guys who have shown some promise than really overpay twice to get Clowney, one in trade compensation and two having to pay some exorbitant contract for him over the next few years. I don’t think he’s worth it. Nothing wrong with kicking the tires, but don’t please don’t make the purchase!

I would be very happy with a young and dynamic TE room of Gesicki, O’Leary, Smythe, and Myarick.

  2. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jets cut 3rd round rookie LB Jachai Polite.
soooo happy we took RG Dieter instead in the 3rd.

I can’t disagree though and am very happy that we keep those young RBs and TEs.

  15. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    We kept Hurns over Ford.
Tough because Ford earned a spot,
but Hurns is a thousand yd NFL receiver, and you can’t overlook that.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

He’s looked like crap last 2 years and can’t recall him doing anything in PS ..

        I know. I would’ve kept Ford.
But nobody is going to poach Ford,

Jacob Eason is another QB to follow this year. He was starting for UGA and got hurt was replaced by Fromm and transferred to Washington. Starting out well against E. Wash, 14-20 for 177, 3 TD, 0 INT in first half.

  45. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Well, this year is definitely in the trash. I like the trade in returns but the team will be trash this year and I doubt next year’s draft is full of instant starters just add water. Why in the hell did we trade for Rosen? There’s no way in hell he learns how to play behind another garbage OL so that was a completely wasted trade. Grier kinda looks mentally incompetent right now.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

????????? Mentally incompetent? Wow, fans sometimes really think they know more than paid professionals… wow… harsh

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Of course they do and sometimes they are right? What’s with you always thinking professionals are always right? Is the doctor always right? Did all those one year NFL coaches do a great job? Did the fired GMs do their jobs gret all the time?

Tell me. Why did they trade for Rosen if he will have a terrible OL? What great training(in real action) will he recive running for his life every game? Did it benefit other QBs who never had a great OL? Andrew Luck for instance?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

To me it looks like Grier is doing a complete rebuild. But yeah that includes whoever the QB is might be in for a tough year.

  46. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

2 1s and a 2nd for Tunsil and Stills? There has to be more to it, but even if not ok.

    whoopyshit.

  54. Ken's avatar Ken says:

LMAO at everyone posting how the players and coaches just want to win

  55. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Why did we want so badly to trade Tunsil?
Did he not get along with Flores?
Or was his value on the trade block just too good to ignore?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We are just too dumb of a franchise

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It really seems that way. We have a roster full of practice squad guys but next year’s draft will definitely get us there. Pinky promise! Just wait one more year Dolphins fans!!!

  56. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I think I read we also gave them a 4th rd pick

  57. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Grier really wants to Tank fro T’ua and he doesn’t care what Brian Flores wants lol. Poor Flores has nothing to work with. I like the haul but that sure assumes we will find better talent than Tunsil and how many times has that occurred? Based off terrible OLs for decades…not too often.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You think Grier is acting alone?

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Probably not. That’s just my funny thought. Grier and Flores in a tug of war for competent/last place. Grier just won lol. He single-handedly threw the entire other team past the line.

  58. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

holy draft capitol batman! MTP? LOL how about CTP

I guess I gotta wait and see, but they are certainly stocking up for the next few years.

  59. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am betting the under on the 3 wins on the Vegas line

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

New Age, the OL has nothing to do with acquiring a QB.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

True but the OL has a lot to do with live evaluation of the QB. Maybe they think he learns it all from the bench? I hope so because this OL will destroy the guy throwing passes.

  61. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Maybe quantity over quality ?? We have 3 new OL last 2 days , minus Tunsil.. I’m pretty good with math , but this don’t seem to compute ..

Wonder why we get for Kiko , cause it sounds like he’s on way out …

Hendrix is killing it against the Saints , who did he piss off ??

  62. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So now we don’t have to “worry” about extending a LT for another few years.
Because we don’t have one worth paying.

  63. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Might have had nothing to do with it, but hard not to notice that Stills is on his way out of town after he went after Ross.

So with our new first we can get a great new rookie LT.
    whoopyshit.

Or if you are targeting a left handed QB in the draft next season a decent run blocking LT and a great pass blocking RT (both later type picks)

  66. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hurns in, because Stills is out?

It sure seems like they wanted to trade Tunsil for a while, at least its consistant with not playing him much reducing the chance he gets hurt.

You don’t trade Tunsil unless you don’t value the position. I think the answer is pretty obvious.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Maybe so. That’s crazy to me but I guess we’ll see later. After having terrible OLs for over a decade, maybe this is the way to go.

  67. D's avatar D says:

That haul is what you normally get trading up for a number 1 pick. My feeling though is they won’t necessarily use it like that maybe an OT and something else

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    News Flash:
Minkah is being moved to offense, will cross train at all OL positions.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I picked Deshaun Watson last night in FF 😁

  70. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Next draft we should have 2 firsts, 3 seconds and 2 thirds.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The second is a 2021 second.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wasn’t out before but cool enough. Means 2 ones and 2 twos in 2021 as well. Plus we have cap room coming. Doing it like the Browns.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The 2nd rd pick is in 2021 so it will be two 1st and two 2nd the next two years unless we load up for the QB in 2020. Might not have to trade up now though.

  71. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Is Jake Long’s little brother coming out next year? Asking for a friend lol.

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So does this mean they do not think Rosen is the guy?

  73. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I am not going to be all doom and gloom about trading Tunsil. Though, why didn’t we complete the trade before all the cuts were made? If they were working on trading Stills, Why not keep Ford?

    • D's avatar D says:

My guess is they have someone else in mind. As I said before, berrios is a better fit and will be much cheaper.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tunsil being a healthy scratch the entire preseason was the clue. X played as did other starters but not Tunsil and now we know why.

  74. D's avatar D says:

It does make sense in some ways, well in a lot of ways even though I’m fairly certain Tunsil would have been a building block. Still only two years on his contract before they were up against a wall and you get a young OT a STbace and possible DB contributor an extra 1st for the next two years an extra second for next two years and you rebuild with your guys in the draft with a guy you have for 5 years at LT instead. Again it doesn’t mean we then trade away everything for a QB we might get a DE and LT next year that helps set us up this team better.im sad to see him go but like I said earlier it’s about the future as well as the now so let’s see how it goes

  75. D's avatar D says:

    Laquon Treadwell just got cut

  76. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Bookman,

I apologize. My response was a bit harsh but everyone makes mistakes and GMs, coaches, etc are very fallible.

Couple of thoughts before I leave for a bit. First, I understand the move, the return was awesome, and maybe it works out. But Jimmy was about as good of a drafter as anyone who ever did it…and he called it a 50/50 crapshoot. Tunsil is an elite LT. He’s been healthy, and will anchor an OL for at least another decade. He’s a direct hit, a complete win, the total package in an elite position. It sounds risky as hell to completely demolish the team and hope you build it back in a 50/50 crapshoot and in FA. Especially seeing all these players getting injured all the time.

Second set of thoughts. Rosen was taken by using some of those picks. He will now practice with a barely functioning NFL OL with barely solid WRs, and TEs against a better D. This may make him better or he may just get used to doing a lot of dump passes. I don’t see how that benefits his growth a lot. I don’t see how our defense prepares for a real NFL offense playing against the offense we will be putting out in practice every week. This team will be lucky to get 2 wins.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think that’s why he isn’t week 1 starter to let the OL get settled out. I said this before Tunsil was headed out, but probably after the trading of Tunsil was already bin their minds

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I hope OD stays away for a few days lol.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tunsil was solid even if I never thought great, but we just got two first rounders for him or maybe more. Stills wasn’t worth much.

  77. D's avatar D says:

I think Rosen still likely our guy for the future we will know though after he takes over

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Patsies cut Demaryius.

  79. Ken's avatar Ken says:

16 games of watching Fitzpatrick running for his life

  80. D's avatar D says:

If I was doing things now after the trade I really am thinking top OT next year unless Rosen just really shits the bed. If he does move up get your QB and if not take the OT take a DE that fits your system. Pick up another OL and CB in the second. Lawrence just put up a stinker in Clemsons opener. Tia looked good but against a poop team. Hebert gets to go up against a pretty decent defense in Auburn so we will see on him. There is Fromm, Love (who also played pretty bad) and I’m sure several people who are going to show up out of nowhere. It’s not like we have no options

  81. D's avatar D says:

I’m feeling like I’m Timming it up with my positive outlook. Kinda creeping me out

  82. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What I dont get is why you guys assume we need to trade up to get a QB in 2020.

I dont think losing Tunsil and Stills really matters that much, we’ll see.

  83. D's avatar D says:

Now it’s a matter of if I keep Sunday ticket this year lol

  84. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, kinda speechless about the Tunsil trade. I guess that means we have a revolt on our hands?

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The team is rebuilding the entire roster just a bit more extreme than we initially thought.

  86. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

As I said before, berrios is a better fit

D, good call. I actually mocked him to us a couple times. When the Pats drafted him, I thought there is their next Edleman.

  87. D's avatar D says:

Stills was a take this guy off my hands move, a cap savings + removing a guy who wasn’t going to be team first with how he felt towards Ross and therefore the organization.

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve got enough picks next year to replace Tunsil, but it will be interesting to see how LT plays out for us this year.

  89. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

D, all to your QB list possibly Jacob Eason of Washington. He went 27/36 349 4 td 0 int today. Ok, its was against Eastern Washington, but he is one to keep an eye on.

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m just stuck on figuring out who is our LT for the Ravens game.

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Looking back on all things Tunsil, I just really think Flores never warmed up to him.

  92. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Sterup is better at run blocking than pass pro. We kept 5 RB’s, 1 FB and 4 TE’s.

Me thinks we are going to be running the ball A LOT!

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Texans also got Carlos Hyde, a guy from Naples High. Good RB.
Did not grow up here however.

  94. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Albert Breer

    @AlbertBreer

Full terms of Texans/Dolphins trade, per source …

    Dolphins get: 2020 first-round pick, 2021 first-round pick, 2021 second-round pick, CB Johnson Bademosi, OT Julie’n Davenport.

Texans get: OT Laremy Tunsil, WR Kenny Stills, 2020 fourth-round pick, 2021 sixth-round pick

Damnit! I wanted that 2021 6th round pick!

    GRIER!!!!

  95. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Terrible trade for this year and perhaps next, but incredible trade for perhaps next year and certainly well beyond. I called it on Stills’ days being limited with us, but holy cow, we traded our franchise LT in Tunsil? Bittersweet… that’s all I’ve got.

I’m ready to fast-forward to Draft Day 2020 right now… and now you can take the UNDER on whatever Vegas has to say for us this year.

What doesn’t kill ya will only serve to make ya stronger… and we will be coming back STRONG in a couple of years. Hang in there, fellas… it’s a good year to be watching college football.

  96. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Next year, depending who comes out early, could be a huge QB class. More than just Tua (who again didn’t really impress me today), Herbert and Fromm. Love, Eason and Ian Book of ND are a couple more who all have potential.

The numbers are there but I saw quite a few passes off the mark but were caught cause the receivers were wide open. There is just something about him that tells me he will struggle in the NFL. I just wonder how good his numbers would be if he were not on the best team in college football and have the best WR in college football. He struggled and Duke held them scoreless in the 1st qtr. It wasn’t until Dukes D got wore out being on the field most of the game where his numbers started going up. Dukes offense was only on the field for 23 min. That’s a wore out D. lol

This does suck because I had hidden hopes for this season. I got tickets to the Phins/Pats game with high hopes for an upset. Going with a friend who is a diehard Pats fan. Glad we are not traveling together or it would be a long 10 hour drive back to Pensacola. LOL
