Week 6 – Jets @ Dolphins

Defense was the story last week as the Dolphins played their best game of 2020 with a total and complete dismantling of the San Francisco 49ers. QB Jimmy Garoppolo probably wished he waited one more week to come back, and I’d bet HC Kyle Shanahan wishes he didn’t put Jimmy G. in either because he clearly looked like he wasn’t ready to play. The Dolphins defense hounded Jimmy G. and his wobbly ankle yielded wobbly throws and he was unable to escape the rush which was heavy all day. 5 sacks total to boost the yearly total to 14 sacks. Don’t spit on that guys, that’s a legit improvement from last season where we managed a season’s total of 23. Our current pace for sacks put us at 45, which is unlikely, but either way puts us close to doubling last year’s output. The rush came from everywhere, inside with Elandon Roberts, Jerome Baker and Zach Sieler and outside with Van Ginkle and Ogbah. Add in 3 turnovers, 2 INT’s (Xavien Howard) and 1 fumble recovery (Christian Wilkins) and it was great day for the defense.

Now on to the offense which by the way, also came to play. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 350 yards with 3 TD’s and zero INT’s. The run game was merely a complement, Myles Gaskin rushed 16 times for 57 yards and 1 TD and they sprinkled in a little of Breida and a rush or two from Bowden and Grant. RB Jordan Howard was healthy scratch. Now there is talk of the possibility of the Dolphins signing former Steeler and Jets RB Le’Veon Bell. At the moment of this writing, Bell has narrowed it down to 3 teams, the Bills, Chiefs and Dolphins. Does adding Le’Veon Bell make us a playoff contender? I suppose it depends on how we use him. The 2 RB’s we acquired in the offseason are basically spectators to the Myles Gaskin show. Breida and Howard have 114 yards rushing combined on 35 caries while Gaskin has 64 carries and 249 yards rushing. Bell looked anything but a top tier back in NY this season and last night but i9njuries have hampered him. He has only 19 carries this season and really is quite far removed from the elite RB he was in Pittsburgh all the way back in 2017. Personally, I’d say he was more of a product of that offense, having a great run blocking O-line, also catching passes from Roethlisberger when plays broke down and having WR’s Antonio Brown (in his prime) along with Martavis Bryant . So many times Big Ben extended the play and found Bell for a hige gain because the field was cleared out by Brown and Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Is it possible he’s that same player? I wouldn’t bet on it.

The Dolphins will play a late game this week (4PM) due to COVID-19 rescheduling. The Jets come in to Miami at a low point of their season. They are 32nd in scoring at 15 PPG and 32nd in defense allowing 32.2 PPG. Just dreadful. Last week we beat a team not at their best, and we put our foot on their neck. We need to do the same this week. Yes, the Jets cut Le’Veon Bell but may be getting 2 receivers back, Breshad Perriman (ankle) and Denzel Mims (IR hamstring). Both WR’s would be a boost to an anemic Jets offense that has featured Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan, Braxton Berrios and TE Chris Herndon. Sam darnold has had a difficult season to say the least, the O-line pass protection has been leaky and he doesn’t really have a reliable receiver to throw to. He’s been sacked 12 times and has thrown 3 TD’s against 4 INT’s. HC Adam Gase is beyond dead man walking, yet this is a game if the guy has any juice left that he would try to get his team to compete in. Right now the Jets have to be included as a favorite to land next year’s prized possession in the NFL Draft, QB Trevor Lawrence and a win could put that in jeopardy as the hapless Atlanta falcons share an 0-5 record.

LB Kyle Van Noy is questionable to play this week with a groin injury. He played last week against the Niners but that’s a tough injury to play through. Sam Eguavoen would replace Van Noy if he can’t go. We also lost DT Davon Godchaux with a torn biceps and this should give DT Raekwon Davis a lot more snaps along with Brandon Sieler who has been fantastic in a Dolphins uniform. Sieler has played 38% of the snaps this season already and I expect that will increase significantly this week with Godchaux out. Mike Gesicki finally was more involved in the offense and I hope that continues. He averaged over 18 YPC last week on 5 receptions so we need to keep feeding him the ball. I honestly don’t expect Bell to be a Miami Dolphins, my guess is the Bills. Either way, hope we make the right decision.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Facts: Economy, wall street, your pension has done better under a Democratic president vs Republican president over the last 60 years.

I have no idea about a housing crisis in this day and age since my house is paid off, but from my Texan vantage point, there is no crisis.

He’s probably talking about home loans that some people had no business getting, and section 8 welfare living. Lyndon B. Johnson hurt the black family and other minorities (and I hate even saying that) in ways only they can tell you about. Listen to their truth. Lyndon B. Johnson was a racist and an elitist. A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

When was that? Ancient history, imo. What about today? Any relevance?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes, it’s very relevant. The ‘Great Society’ was a disaster for so many people. That’s what happens when government gets too big. Talk to the people who lived it and the generations that are trying to get out of it. We see it following sports. Because of athletics so many of our citizens are trying to get out of the hood. Why are they saying that?

Stanger – Trump is one person. I couldn’t give a flying fuck what he complains about, he’s an ass. I’m talking about good people who I like, have liked most of my life that just obsess over anything and everything Trump. Does he say stupid shit, is he an asshole? Check and check. Does that mean you have to spend every fucking day finding faults and complaining about what he does? He’s far from the worst President policy wise, they just can’t stand the person and have let his personality consume them. Maybe you don’t see it to the extent I do, and it’s kind of coming to a crescendo right now because the election is so close. Believe me, I see people on the other side too, but the majority of anti-Trumpers just can’t help themselves anymore. it’s like an illness, so I think TDS is as close to legitimate diagnosis as can be.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

TDS is real but Biden will save us all. Perception = reality. Okay… I don’t see it that way. I see lots of propaganda going on between both sides. The great divide is real. 😦

Either way, this election will be viewed as rigged by one side or the other. That’s the FUCKIN problem. That’s where we are. We can’t even accept a fuckin election!

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You talk out of both sides of your mouth. And, now Tim k has glommed on. I don’t get get what either one of your saying.

I can’t stand it when Trump talks, but he does everything I love. WTF? Like I said, I’m kiss philosophy follower, and this rhetoric is confounding to me.

I’m guilty of a bit of that myself. I try my best not to bring it up with others but if they feel similarly then we can go on for a while. In a lot of cases it is justifying voting just cause find someone distasteful and untrustworthy. But at the same time seems what you are describing is what pollsters would term voter enthusiasm. But think it is on the other side as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I never once called you out personally. You took my view of history that I’m aware of and injected your perception of reality with insults towards to me. You’e doing that a lot these days. Mike, the left and their cronies in the media go after Trump 24/7, because he wants to drain the corruption from DC, aka the swamp. It’s that simple, if he wins doing anything they lose. They really don’t care, if the American people win, they’re fighting for their way of life at our expense.

A vote for the Establishment us a vote for corruption at any level of govt.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – I don’t understand what you’re saying. There’s no rhetoric, it’s what I see. I’m not giving you political rhetoric because I’m not saying Trump is great and Biden sucks. I’m just saying that in my opinion, good people have lost their shit and have become consumed with their hatred for Trump. What don’t you understand? I’m not saying you have to agree with it, and I’m not talking out of both sides of my mouth. Fact is I go on Facebook every day and there are certain people who have almost made it their life mission to post each and every day and voice a new complaint, vicious meme or whatever they can find against Trump along with scathing commentary. I’m not asking you you to agree with me, I said what I said because I believe it to be true.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Some people hate Trump more than they love the country.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Case in point. And, I would say and have been saying I have “hated” Trump for a very long time. Because of my love for country, I think it was a huge mistake he was electorally elected.

The carnage he spoke about in his inaugural speech has come to fruition via his own self-fulfilling prophecy and actions

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I understand what you’re saying Mike E., but it’s a little disengious, imo, to start a topic with “TDS”, Libs, and Dems said and did this or that. Rarely, if ever, on this blog do I see the other side doing/saying/starting a topic ON THIS BLOG with that approach.

Cordiality be damned when you cast the first stone.

I don’t know what goes on on social media, and I don’t really care.

I have seen great discussions here when everyone talks about the issues and don’t put all blame on one side or the other. Then, there’s cordiality and respect.

Start with fighting/blaming words, guess what, you’re going to get a fight.

Perhaps I expressed that intention poorly last night, but that is what I was trying to say.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I enjoyed the last season, no complaints.

But I watched the whole thing in a manner of weeks vs years. That might make a difference.

lol, what I mean by that is the bell in the right upper corner of the blog screen will light up with an orange indicator when someone replies to one of your comments, and you can click on it to pull up your comments and replies. It’s a useful tool for checking replies that are far up the screen that you may miss.

For the last month or two when I click on it, it just spins and doesn’t open up. This has been happening on different computers across different locations. Just wondering if it’s an inherent blog bias against apekind rearing its ugly head or if everyone is experiencing this unacceptable degradation of essential services, lol.

  46. Randy's avatar Randy says:

A diverse or multiple defense usually means you’re playing smaller guys more often. You want as big as you can get, but if guys are playing multiple positions you are gonna have a more homogeneous group of guys. It can lead to more injuries. This crazy year hasn’t helped but it takes a toll on you if you’re constantly getting beat on by bigger guys.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think thats true of the LB’s and the for certain in how they run their D but i think they want meat on the line. Just the way they built the OL to out man the LOS i think they want that on the DL as well. I think that while effective at getting the job done, Godchaux was not the ideal guy for them at that position. Their selections at the DL spots have been much different, bigger more powerful guys.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s why I said we’re built to play with a lead. We want smaller fast players that can cover and blitz, on the field, as much as possible. We don’t want to be fend the run all game.

  47. D's avatar D says:

Walterfootball is mocking Micah Parson and Gregory Rousseau to us, and while im fine with those selections, id much rather go Surtain and Waddle, or Surtain and Leatherwood. Kinda depends to me if we feel set with Igmahogany and/or Hunt. If both then Waddle and Barmore, who is a really good edge rusher but also has the ability to flex in as a 3-4 DE and give pressure more from the middle of the DL. I think Rousseau has bust potential, im not sold on him. If he had attended school and played i would possibly be more confident after seeing him this season but both Parson and Rousseau opted out so we dont get to see much of either of them.

  48. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  49. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D
The idea is to have a couple stout guys in the middle but the edge guys are more tweeners. I wasn’t really thinking specifically of Godchaux, but he is and really always has been a 1 gap player not a 2 gap guy. We’ve used him that way, but he’s more of a slasher or gap penetrator. Kudos to him for doing whatever he’s asked to do, but he’s best suited as a 3 tech guy.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah he is no 0 or 1 tech, 3 and 5 likely would be fine for him. He’s just a high motor kid who wins by effort, which is great but like you were saying, it can wear ya down.

To this day I cannot smell purple kookaid without also smelling cow shit. We used to use Purple Koolaiide to flavor our mushroom tea back in the day. The shrooms were often not cleaned well enough after picking them from cow fields in the early morning hours. Grape bubble gum smells like cow shit to me still too.

Lmao….now days you don’t have to graze like we used to.

Dried and dipped in anything you think your palate can handle works with a lime. Supposedly the lime is like a catalyst like dexamethasone.

      Random, fyi.

Doesn’t toll for Kong anymore apparently, lol.

This song was in my head when I commented, and the second I hit submit on my original post I lamented the wording of the first sentence.

“Am I the only one who the bell doesn’t toll for anymore? ”

      Should have been:

“Am I the only one for whom the bell doesn’t toll for anymore? “

    stanger,
I have no idea what was in the Purple Monkey. It was something the gals in our circle brought to the table. It tasted like grape juice and was purple. That’s all I know. They wouldn’t let us know what went into their “secret” recipe. We were pretty sure they just made it up one night when they were wasted and running out of shit. Lol

In college, it was whatever got thrown in the bucket. But, one of my buddies did have a recipe for his jungle juice. Back then, everybody just came up with whatever. Today, they probably google it, order the liquor online, use a healthy sugar substitute and drink it from ergonomically designed sippy cups that are made from completely recycled materials.
