Week 9 – Dolphins @ Cardinals

Ah, how nice is it to ponder our team in Week #9 of an NFL season and not only be in contention for a playoff spot and the division crown, but to do so with a top rated defense and a promising young QB? C’mon, think about that and let it sink in. Forget about Tua throwing for only 102 yards, but think about this defense just 7 games into rebuild YEAR ONE and our defense, yes, the Miami Dolphins defense has given up the least points per game at 18.6 PPG. Incredible! I know some of you are worried about Tua but let it go man. NO matter who we drafted at QB you’d be feeling and thinking we made a mistake. If we took Herbert (who is playing well and looks good) you’d be thinking we screwed up. If we traded up and got Joe Burrow we’d be saying we mortgaged the future and gave up too much. If we waited to select Jordan Love we’d be saying we half-assed and should have gone all in on one of the upper echelon QB’s. Forget about that, we have Tua, and he’s got the talent to be great for us. Let it happen, and enjoy it!

Speaking of that defense, oh that defense. What a clinic they put on against the 5-2 LA Rams. Maybe Garoppolo wasn’t 100% but Goff was and that’s twice within a few weeks that we have flummoxed two NFC QB’s. Goff was pressured and harassed and hit all day long. Dolphins D forced 4 turnovers in all, 2 INT’s and 2 forced fumbles and recoveries, one for a TD on the strip sack of Goff by DE Emmanuel Ogbah (pictured above) and the TD return by LB Andrew Van Ginkel (also pictured above). Opportunistic they were, but there are some concerns. The Rams ran 90 offensive plays and had the ball for 36 and half minutes. 61 pass attempts and and 39 rush attempts. I comprehend that the score is all that matters at the end of the day, but I think we all understand this can’t happen week after week. The guys were exhausted, I saw several Dolphins barely able to get back to the LOS and get set in the 4th quarter, so this can’t continue. We need to get off the field sometimes, and the run defense is a concern. Teams look at film and find weaknesses and if the score is close enough, they will try and exploit our weak rushing defense.

The Arizona Cardinals are also 5-2, like the Rams were last week. They are coming off their BYE week and will be well rested and ready to go. We may catch a bit of a break because it appears as if Kenyan Drake may miss thye game which leaves the rushing in the capable hands of Chase Edmonds. The problem is, #29 doesn’t scare me as much as #1 on the opposing team does. We had tons of trouble with Cam Newton and the RPO but to be fair, that was game #1. This defense has come a long way since then. Still, Kyler Murray is a dangerous man when he’s running with the football, and in my opinion, much like Cam Newton, he scares me more running than passing. We have to be disciplined and we have to play better against that type of attack. We guessed wrong too often with Cam and the RPO, I hope we can do better with Murray. I’m also worried about sending too much pressure and having him find a hole to run upfield so we have to be cognizant of that as well. Oh yeah, and the Cards have DeAndre Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk and Andy Isabella. The Cards are top 10 in points scored (8th at 29 PPG) and in points allowed (9th at 20.9) and have a +57 point differential. The Dolphins are 11th in PPG at 26.9PPG and as previously mentioned, #1 in points allowed (I like saying that!) at 18.6PPG, with a +58 point differential. Good news for Miami, rookie LT Austin Jackson has returned to practice. In his stead, veteran Jesse Davis has performed admirably.

The Dolphins offense will be somewhat of a mess due to the fact that their leading rusher Myles Gaskin is OUT and 3 week IR and it looks likely that backup Matt Breida (hamstring) may also be out or limited. That leaves only Jordan Howard (break in case of emergency), Patrick Laird and Savon Ahmed. I haven’t seen an injury report regarding FB Chandler Cox yet, and there’s always a chance both Malcolm Perry and Lynn Bowden get some touches in the backfield. We’re going to have to see more of Tua in this game, and I hope he’s up for the task. I know he has the talent and the confidence so let’s see some more of him please. I was perfectly fine with how things played out last week, there was no need to put any burden on Tua, the defense and ST’s like the wonderful 88 yard return for a TD last week, along with the Van Ginkel fumble recovery for a TD, but that won’t happen every week, and with the run game being at a huge deficit, it may be Tua time this week. Will #88 ever be a big part of the gameplan? I surely hope so, like Sonny said in “A Bronx Tale”, “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent, and the choices that you make will shape your life forever” Let’s make the right choice and get #88 the damn football!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

That is probably the first time he was really hit since his injury

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Dolphins have dramatically ramped up their usage of Cover-0 this season, indicating that they have been far more willing to send the house after the quarterback and trust that their cornerbacks will be able to handle themselves on the back end. So far, that trust has been paid off. In 2019, opposing passers completed 12 of 20 passes for 202 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception against the Dolphins when they played Cover-0, per PFF and Tru Media. That’s a 112.9 passer rating. This year, though, the Dolphins have already played more snaps in Cover-0 than they did a year ago, and passers are just 22 of 42 for 104 yards, zero touchdowns, and three picks against them — a 28.5 passer rating. That’s not a typo.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I never talked to guys on the other team either. I knew lots of guys who didn’t. It’s not that strange. You’re trying to rip somebody’s head off. Why would I be friendly with them? After the game, fine. During, I want to destroy you.

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I saw a video of one of the talking heads saying to take the over in tomorrow’s game because the genius of Kingsbury and them having two weeks to cook up something to destroy the dolphins with. He was predicting Murray is going is going to “trample over” our defense.

I think the guy is reaching really hard. As CBS recognized in the article Phelon posted above our staff does a really good job getting our defensive players ready for the game mentally.

I am going to stick with the under.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t know because I don’t get to watch practice, but I wonder if bringing in Van Noy really did help guys learn how to run Flores’ defense and how to call it on the field. This defense relies on boundary coverage, but it really relies on guys playing smart and knowing how to disguise what they’re doing. It’s not just a lineup and go defense.
    ***
Van Noy and Baker will be key in stopping Murray.

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I really hope Jordan Howard has a giant chip on his shoulder tomorrow and takes it out on the Card’s D.

  18. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I like the way the game that is the “this is the game that we’ll see where Miami is” game keeps changing. First it was the 49’ers and Miami crushed them. Jets didn’t count because they are so bad (even though they played close games with Buf and NE) and Miami crushed them. Then the Rams were going to be the measuring stick and Miami crushed them. Now it’s Arizona…What are they going to say if/when Miami crushes them?

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

For me, I actually think this team is still very much in the development stages. It’s not a finished product by any means. But, that actually excites me because I think we can get better. I think we will be a much improved team next year…over where we started this year. I’m in no rush to have us be anointed as “being there”. It means nothing. Keep getting better. Keep building a program that can sustain long term success. The best teams are always trying to get better in any way possible. This team can get better in plenty areas. Build on last week.

Alluding to the article on Flores, he knows the value of defense. He’s won a few SBs with defense.

Another tough test, another chance to take it up a notch.

Hopefully, Dolphins get a little help from O against Cardinals.

    • agreed, just not happy with Howard, he runs like his cleats are full of lead. reminds me of Eddie George, but slower and much weaker

BEEN BURDENED running Mrs. OD from Dr’s appointments to testing centers to hospitals to other doctor’s in a seemingly endless attempt to prove she either DOES HAVE a potentially dangerous blood clot behind her knee that was just operated on OR she DOES NOT HAVE a blood clot. One test says “YES,” the next one said “NO!” It took about 12+ ghours yesterday and it appears NOW that she does NOT have one. She can not drive, so I’ve missed enormous amounts of hours at work the last several days driving her all over greater Tampa Bay, mostly on a wild goose chase!!
This all COULD have been avoided IF the special leg machines and the ice maker that were dropped off at our house for her use were followed with HOME INSTRUCTIONS OF HOW TO USE THEM!! Day after day we were told “the instructor will soon be there.” Never happened!! Meanwhile the local Advent hospital nearly killed her by NOT giving her doctor-ordered prescriptions and by NOT cleaning her up for HOURS after a several bowel movements!! Twice I found her laying in DO-DO!! She pressed the red light attached to her bed to no avail as lazy nurses assistants ignored her. Finally, I got her out of there and she was sent to a rehab facility where the treatment was outstanding. But her leg was swollen up to twice its normal size and she was still not getting all the therapy she needed. This was the most frustrating and aggravating experience of our lives!!
    ——————
FINALLY, several days late, my beloved started to get all the physical therapy she was supposed to get. She’s just beginning to get better. But her pain levels approach “11” on a scale of 1 to 10. So, a process that was SUPPOSED to require 1 day in a hospital ended up with 4 days in Advent hospital and 5 days in a therapy facility. And her at home therapy sessions were delayed in getting started. My guess is we are one to two more weeks away from her being able to drive. So I will have to curtail my work hours in order to make SURE everything is safe at home with her. There are only so many things you can do when you’re confined to a walker AND you’re unable to drive.
    —————–
BUT BETTER DAYS ARE COMING!! Tomorrow, Mrs. OD and I will watch our Dolphins upset the favored Arizona Cardinals 26-17. Young Mr. Sanders will maintain his perfect kicking record this season with 4 for 4 FG’s and 2-2 extra points!! And the Dolphins’ defense will make it very difficult for Murray and the Cards’ offense to be productive!!

    OD 26-17 MIA.

When talking drafting a RB next year. I really like the duo of Javonte Williams and Michael Carter from UNC. UNC sports the best backfield in college football. They both are 3 down backs. Carter is more of a make you miss guy and Williams is more of a if I can’t make you miss then I am going through you at 5’10 220. Looking at what we have right now, I would prefer the bigger of the 2 in WIlliams. He is really racking up the TD’s this year. Through the first 6 games this season he has 95 carries for 616 yards and 11 TD’s and 11 receptions for 210 yards and 2 TD’s. Add on today’s #’s another 10 carries for 110 yards with 3 TD’s and 4 receptions for 24 yards and a TD.

His yards after first contact is off the charts.

This Clemson/Notre Dame game brings back a sad memory. In 2015, my high school football coach was killed in a private plane crash flying with friends (one of them being Sprint Cup Champion Tony Elliott) on their way to the Clemson/ND game at Clemson. The game was played in a constant downpour. It was determined that their plane was downed by a microburst of wind in a thunderstorm killing all on board including his son and one of my classmates I played with. There was a brief mention of it by the announcers during the game.

He is still in the Indiana record books for having the most dominant team in Indiana High School Football History. I was on the JV team. Over 13 games we outscored our opponents 638-73. In the playoffs, we beat our opponents 81-0 in the Sectional, 67-0 in the Regional, 63-6 in the Semi-State and 44-14 in the State Championship. Needless to say, I got to see a lot of 4th quarter action. lol

Score never mattered to him. He was intense and demanded perfect execution up to the final snap of the game.

After Irish win over Clemson I am of the mood that “anything good can happen”. Extra 3 hours to start time means I need to find some chores to keep my mind busy until then. 🙂

Is there any room in the laundry brigade???

Looks like today might be that day.

I agree, hope Herd has a few loads for today, I don’t love us in this game. Would love to be pleasantly surprised though, in fact I’d be delighted. I really think if we handle the Cards today, we’re a serious contender. That’s something!

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I’m watching the “Coach Brian Flores Show” and they had some shots of the stands during the game and it is weird to see a bunch of 1’s up there.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Don Shula show used to come on at 8:30pm on Monday nights, right before MNF. It was must watch tv back in the day. Now we have the internet, so the coaches’ show doesn’t really interest me like it used to, but I’m going to look it up. It can’t be any worse than Flores’ speaking in front of our God awful beat writers.

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am really starting to buy into Flores. Watching his show every week helps, but the play since November of last year has changed me. For years I have subconsciously expected things to go to shit even when they were up. Now I don’t have nearly as much game day anxiety as I used to. I feel like we can win even when we are behind.

  73. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Laundry is always available on gameday. It truly is the best time to do it, if you’re watching from home. Otherwise it’s a bit awkward.

I will say that the late games interfere with my schedule. I like to get it finished earlier in the day, maybe there’s a little OCD going on here.

So do the dolphins play sides with Howard / Jones or do they assign one of them to Hopkins?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think either one of them is capable of covering Hopkins but it’s a tough assignment for either. I think we’ll play sides.

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Here is my “bold” prediction for this afternoon. Dolphins D picks Murray twice and makes him fumble on a scramble once.

  76. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we win today we’ll be tied for wildcard #2 with Browns, Ravens vs Colts loser, and possibly the Raiders, and after the Bills lose to the Seahawks we’ll be 1/2 game back in the division.

I hope the Ravens vs Colts game doesn’t end in a tie.

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Won’t we be 1 1/2 games back still?
If we win we will be 5-3 If they lose they will be 6-3. One game up. Plus they own the h2h for another 1/2 game. Am I wrong?

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

LOL! “Van Ginkle has been living rest free in Goff’s head for the past week.”

  79. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve got a bad feeling about this game. Travel across the country to play against a very good team coming off of a bye.

A good measuring stick to me was always the game after a team that won on Monday night. Last week the Rams had that plus playing across the country gainst a team coming off of a bye.

Last week we couldn’t have had a more advantageous scheduling, this week AZ doesn’t have that big advantage, but close.

My only hope is we catch AZ sleeping or they’re over confident. I don’t think we match up real good with them, but if Drake is out it’ll help.

  82. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

AFC game of the day Ravens vs Colts, who do you want to win and why?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, I was just about to post a similar question when I saw the news about Trebek.

I want the Colts to lose. I hate the Ravens way more, but I think we’re more likely to overtake the Colts than the Ravens.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree. I think the Colts can fall off the playoff hunt easier, so it gives us a better chance to make it, if we were SB con tenders I’d rather have the Ravens out of the way, if we sucked and out of contention I’d rather the Ravens lose, so the Steelers win the duvusion.

  83. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hope we get pressure on Kyler today. Going from the statue Goff to mighty mouse Murray is going to be quite a challenge.

This is our measuring stick game, win and we become contenders, lose and we’ll be still in rebuild year 1.

The D needs to set the edge today, (critical) and contain Murray up the middle. Also, if you have a chance to blow up Murray on a RPO and the RB might get the ball for a gain, blow up Murray anyway, let the RB make play. LOL
