2021 Position outlook – WR

Since the Miami Dolphins own the #3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a lot of speculation has the Dolphins selecting Alabama WR Devonta Smith to add an important offensive weapon to help speed up the success of QB Tua Tagovailoa. While this is certainly possible, let’s take a look at who’s actually on the roster at this time and under contract in 2021.

DeVante Parker, Jakeem Grant, Preston Williams, Lynn Bowden and Malcolm Perry will all be returning players from this year’s roster. Two players who opted out due to COVID-19 are set to return, Albert Wilson and Allen Hurns. We sure could have used these guys this season. I’d be willing to bet that if we had Albert Wilson, the Lynn Bowden trade never happens. In any case, it’s good to have a young player like Bowden and I think he showed us some potential as well as some limitations. Allen Hurns is a solid possession type receiver who benefited greatly when paired with superstar WR Allen Robinson in JAX. Neither Wilson or Hurns are guaranteed a spot on this time, especially with the current youth movement, and although like I said, if Wilson was here, Bowden probably wouldn’t be here, he is, and now he threatens the possibility of Wilson coming back.

Let’s look at what our WR’s did this season statistically . . .

DeVante Parker – 63 / 793 4 TD’s 12.3 YPR

Jakeem Grant – 36 / 373 1 TD 10.4 YPR

Lynn Bowden Jr. – 28 / 211 0 TD 7.5 YPR

Preston Williams – 18 / 288 4 TD’s 16.0 YPR

Malcolm Perry – 9 / 92 1 TD 10.2 YPR

Isaiah Ford before and after he was a Patriot totaled 28 receptions for 276 yards and Mack Hollins had 16 catches for 176 yards, none bigger than the 41 yard completion from a twisting Ryan Fitzpatrick. As per the norm over DeVante Parker’s career as a Miami Dolphins, nagging injuries hampered him most of the season and as per usual, when healthy, he showed us just how good and dominant he can be. Just look at the numbers there and tell me we don’t need to make a serious investment at the WR position. Once again, we do have Wilson and Hurns potentially coming back next season but both are stopgap guys, and are not here for the long term. There’s not one player on this team at the moment that can be counted on for significant production. That’s a problem.

Devonta Smith, Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, Chris Olave, Rashod Bateman, Kadarius Toney and some other WR’s, we will be selecting at least one or maybe 2 in this draft. We also may look to FA which would then almost guarantee that at least one of the 2 returning WR’s from the COVID opt out won’t be back. We need playmakers, and my guess is we will be seeking a RB who can do that as well, but right now we’re discussing WR’s.

In the 2021 Free Agency class, the list is headed by guys we won’t be looking at. A.J. Green, Allen Robinson, Larry Fitzgerald, T.Y. Hilton etc. We’re not going to pay that kind of money but a guy like WR Marvin Jones who played for the Lions and is 31 and should come in under $10M might be a target. He’s been good for 60-70 receptions and in the neighborhood of 700-1000 yards a season and close to 10 TD’s. I think we need consistency and Marvin Jones is that guy. There are a lot of other talented and younger WR’s available, like JuJu Smith Schuster but the cost will prohibit us from looking at them. A lot of who we look at will depend upon who is hired to be our new OC in 2021 as former OC Chan Gailey decided he’s had enough.

I’ll be looking at different segments of our roster each week, I just felt that Wide Receiver was so hot right now I may as well run with that. I suppose fro some of you readers I should be looking at QB’s next but sorry, not going there! I’ll probably look at RB’s next. After all, this is about getting Tua weapons to succeed, so the team succeeds, right?

GO DOLPHINS 2021!!!

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My take on the receivers at the Senior bowl:

Frank Darby – Just another WR with issues of getting separation
Dez Fitzpatrick – You’re just getting another Parker/Williams type receiver
Demetric Felton – Versatile. He’s a RB but lines up in slot most of time in a spread “O”. Just OK.
Ben Skowronek – IMO, he is more like a small TE. Good receiver.
Tylan Wallace – Real Good but route tree is very limited. Only lined up on right side 98% of the time in an air raid like offense. Stats may be inflated due to being in that offense.

Now the ones I want to see more of:
D’Wayne Eskridge – They call him the swiss army knife as he would play WR/KR and CB all in the same games. Smaller WR at 5’9 but real fast, 4.33 speed.
Nico Collins – Big WR. 6’4 220 with a second gear. Will be interesting to see what he runs. Was a victim of a poor passing game at Michigan 2019 then opted out of 2020 season.
Cade Johnson – A small 5’9ish small school speedster. Don’t know much about him but is projected to go around 6th where we could double down on WR.

  24. Henne will get killed in Buffalo, lol wont be pretty,,,

Something tells me, though, that THIS game will be much closer. There are two NFL QB’s who’ve passed for over 80,000 yards in their careers. BOTH of them will be on display tonight. GOO-O-O Saints!!

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The moral is, it takes a team to win, never just one player. That’s why I don’t want to go for Deshaun Watson. I think the Henne led Chiefs will have a tough time with the Bills but they will be prepared if they have to go with Henne and should put up a good fight.

  47. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

What is going on with the Tampa cover team?

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – That BUF really needs to be taken into context. We had a skeleton crew out there at WR and BUF shut that shit down. Plus, they put all the pressure on Tua and the passing game by taking a 28-3 halftime lead which basically eliminated the running game. I hate they call it a Tua meltdown, the kid didn’t really have a chance. On the other hand, he definitely elevate his game or his team, in a big moment but that would have been a lot to ask.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Was this meant for someone else or are you talking about my team of destiny comment?

I’m half joking with that team of destiny comment. I was tossing it out for Toba because of our little exchange about that last night.

If you’re just kinda continuing the Tua vs Watson conversation, I’m game to give my take again. 🙂

      Re: Tua,
I don’t put a ton of stock into just one game. They beat us, there were reasons. It wasn’t just Tua’s fault, so I agree with that. The whole team got their butts kicked.

I also think Tua may still be fine and become a good QB, it takes time to develop, I get that. But I think concerns over whether that happens or not are legitimate. It’s certainly not guaranteed.

I want a QB, and Watson is a sure thing at this point IMO, so I’m still making that trade if we can do it for Tua and nothing beyond 2021 picks.

I still have a hard time thinking this is real. Teams just don’t trade franchise QBs at this stage of their career, and the Texans could literally control his location for at least the next 5 years, but the Texans are freakin’ dysfunctional, so who knows what they’ll do. I’ve definitely backed of my position of it’ll never happen.

Greir and Flores have come out in favor of Tua, but if you’re trying to trade him with value as part of that deal, you’re not going to say “yeah, it really looks like he’s going to suck.” lol

All I know at this point is I’m happy if we trade for Watson, and I’m still happy if we move forward with Tua and keep those picks. I think we’re in a good position, and I have faith in our braintrust that which ever way they go, we’re going to be ok.

      Cheers 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I like this take, but it’s not definitive regarding one guy or the other! LOL 😉

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think we’re in a position where we can’t lose either way. Either we keep our picks and add some good players to build the team, and hope Tua develops in which case we’re golden.

Or we add a franchise QB, get a couple of weapons in FA, hope for a player or two in the 3rd rd or beyond to be a hit. That makes us playoff strong and maybe a year from being serious contenders.

It still comes down to the FO getting the right players in here.

  49. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Hey, y’all. Didn’t see it posted here earlier, but per Jay Glazer, this is it for Drew Brees: he will retire at season’s end. In other words, this could be Brees’ last game.

    GO BREES!!!
    DEFEAT TOM LADY*!!!

  50. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

I just about had an internal meltdown earlier today (LOL), trying to figure out our best path forward regarding Deshaun vs Tua. There are so many pros and cons on both sides of the conversation, that it’s truly an unenviable decision to make.

This is on par with Brees vs Culpepper — in the moment — 15 years ago. I honestly have NO IDEA what to do… and I think most Phin fans are split, too.

I’d love to open up the convo on this (weighing all of our collective thoughts), but probably not tonight.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Personally I like the draft capital and I like the weapons available in the draft and I like Tua. Stay the course, don’t blow up our cap and get some weapons.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You just cited one pro to rolling with Tua. Yes, that’s a major pro! And I’ve already taken that into consideration as well.

By the way, that IS a major pro.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I sounded redundant there, but that’s probably the #1 reason to roll with Tua.

  51. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am also a little put off by Watson’s attitude. I don’t like the diva I get to decide what is best for the team bs. I know there are many players who are divas and are great players but I just don’t like it

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The way I understand it, Ken, is that ownership reached out to Deshaun, ASKING him for his feedback (sort of akin to the NBA… which I do not like, either). Then after getting some of his feedback, ownership went in a totally different direction, hiring a GM that Deshaun had zero input on.

Then, Deshaun learned about via social media… team didn’t even tell him.

Thus, I’m not sure Deshaun is trying to be “LeBum James” of the NFL.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

That all may be true but it still doesn’t make me feel any better about it. He is not the owner, it is not his team. The owner probably shouldn’t have done what they did but Watson shouldn’t act like a spoiled child who picks up the ball on the playground and goes home

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Agreed, Ken. But I don’t think that’s what Deshaun is doing… nor is the consummate professional in JJ Watt. BOTH players have had enough of their ownership, man.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I feel like this is a little different, but it may be my own bias giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I do know the very first thing we’d get straight before a trade would be to make sure he knows he’ll have nothing to do with personnel or anything other than being the Dolphins QB, lol.

  76. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Regarding Watson, as I said yesterday I think it takes a Tunsil-like trade offer from Houston to get Miami to bite. I just don’t see them giving up that much draft capital. I could see them packaging Tua, Howard and #18 for him. And I would be okay with that. #3 is too valuable as a trade back position. If I was GM for a day that’s all I would give up.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Jets are more likely to make a big offer and they have the capital to do so. Then Watson has to decide how bad he wants out.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think it will take more than that. Doesn’t mean we have to offer it up, just that would take more. My estimate is Tua, #3 and #18 at a minimum. And Howard ain’t worth #3.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I hope ends up on the team we are coaching. If Penei Sewell is as generational a talent as they claim wouldn’t count him out though, especially since wideouts don’t tend to go that high.

  82. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,

Mindhunters was a great show too. Unfortunately it looks like that show will end at 2 seasons, which is too bad.

Bosch somehow never found its way onto my radar, which is why I called it hidden, but it’s 6 seasons in, so I guess someone has to know about it, lol. We’ve got a reprint of the Garden of Earthly Delights triptych in our house, so when I ran across Bosch, I was instantly intrigued by a show with the eponymous lead being a cop.

Season 7 is coming out in the next couple of months and will be it’s final season. I’m looking forward to seeing how they wrap it up.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, my wife and I checked that because we were wondering when Season 3 was coming and as it turns out, there likely won’t be one. Cameron Britton is just great in anything he’s in. Triptych eh? That’s a name I remember here, and I believe he envied D with some pretty long posts of his own if I recall correctly.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Have you seen either of the Manhunt series? Cameron Britton was in the Deadly Games series but the Unabomber series has an excellent cast as well.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Haven’t watched the Manhunt series yet, but I have it queued up. I have no doubt I’ll enjoy it.

  83. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Omar says we still have a long way to go…… and keep building those lines.
    ———————————–
The Miami Dolphins have a long way to go before they reach their final destination and can be considered a legitimate championship contender.

What we’ve seen from these playoffs is that the franchises that advance either have elite quarterbacks like Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, or Buffalo’s Josh Allen. Or they consistently own the line of scrimmage on offense and defense.

    The elite teams have both.

The Dolphins fit neither of these descriptions as the organization’s focus turns to the design stage of this rebuild…..

So while Dolphins fans dream of the ideal playmakers and obsess about whether Tagovailoa can take a gigantic step forward, remember that contests that decide what teams end up with the Lombardi trophy at the end of a season are won and lost in the trenches.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s not wrong. We do need to shore up the Oline and defense. I think defense front 7 still needs some tweaking, the O-line is close, it may just take time to develop. I suppose a great tackle couldn’t hurt us any. lol

Smith was also the more reliable of the two in those games, too, hauling in a higher percentage of his targets (69.4 percent to 61.2 percent) and having fewer drops (2 to Jeudy’s seven).

Do you guys remember Tryptych? I don’t remember if he ever made it to Walker’s blog or any of the others but I do remember him from the SS

  89. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I have no idea why so many talking heads (yes, they are all NY-based/biased) are saying that the stej have more draft capital than our Phins… that’s fake news. What’s more, Tua can bring more to us in a trade than can Sam Darnold, being Darnold has been in the league for 3 years.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I guess what I’m trying to say is this: Tua, R1P3, and R1P18 for Deshaun Watson gets it done over ANYONE else. The stej cannot even come close to that.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We both have two 1st RD picks, but yeah, they certainly don’t have more or better draft capital than us.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Exactly, Mike E. WE are in the driver’s seat, if we so desire to make that trade.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What’s more, Deshaun is in the driver’s seat regarding his destination. His no-trade clause prohibits the Texans from sending him somewhere he doesn’t want to be.

        And Florida is tax-free.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

AND, Chris Mortensen reported that Deshaun really likes the culture we’re building in Miami with Grier/Flores.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yep, and despite the fact that the Jets finally made what appears to be a good hire, he hasn’t proven anything yet as a HC and the Jets have been totally dysfunctional (as we were before Flores, but we were 10-6 last season and the Jets were 2-14)

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 — Any team can offer whatever, doesn’t have to be out of this draft. And more players than Tua and Darnold can be involved. Key thing there though is Watson has a no-trade clause

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If the Texans want to rebuild (they HAVE to!), they want picks NOW, not future picks. And yes, I told ya that Watson has a no-trade clause: he’s in the driver’s seat to his destination, and we have the most to give the Texans.

If we want Watson, we’ve got him.

  90. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So in a nutshell, it would seem that Phins brass has a HUGE decision to make: trust in Tua, or roll with a consensus top-5 QB in Deshaun Watson.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not like they can just “roll” with Watson. For starters the Texans might not put him up for bid. And even if they do the Phins have to put in the best bid of the teams on his list.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If the Texans try to pull some BS (see the Bengals with Carson Palmer), they will absolutely destroy their franchise for years to come. Even the very quiet Andre Johnson made some noise regarding the McNair’s, telling Watson to do what must be done.

Again, if we want him, we’ve got him. We can outbid any other team IF we really want him that badly.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It all comes down to how badly we want him… how much we’re willing to give up for him.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Name the team Watson wants to go too and they can outbid us. Just to go over the top….. think the first rounders for the next five or six years will do it.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If Waston pigeon-holes himself into ONE team, with compensation that carries over for several years while they want to rebuild NOW, the Texans WILL deny the trade and ‘Carson Palmer’ his azz.

Think TEAMS (as in, plural). There are several destinations that Watson could enjoy… and we can offer the most immediate compensation.

STILL SURVIVING yet another day in the Covid Bunker. Neither of us seem any better. Wondering how many weeks it will take for us to get passed this virus. MEANWHILE, to the best of my knowledge, NO ONE IN TAMPA BAY got an anti-Corona virus shot, NOT A SINGLE PERSON!!
IT’s an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!!! OLD FOLKS DYING (and young folks, too!) while our state leaders in Tallahassee DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! NEVER has “throw the bums out” been more appropriate than RIGHT NOW!!! WE plan to vote against every incumbent in the local elections 2 years from now!!!
    ——————————–
TOM BOY and his Buccaneers will have to go into frigid Green Bay and beat the PACKERS next Sunday. Temps in the 20’s with snowfall are expected around kickoff. My money’s on the PACK!!
Meanwhile, in the AFC, if Mahomes can go, I like the Chiefs to win. If Henne starts, the Chiefs will get blown out by Buffalo! What a gruesome prospect!!

IF the worst happens, I’ll hold my nose and root for the Bucs over the Bratwurst Biters!

WR Chris Olave to return to Ohio St.. Not in the draft this year

  93. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I STILL don’t know what I’d do if I were GM, regarding the Deshaun Watson ordeal. This is BIG, y’all.

We’ve been down this path before, regarding Brees/Culpepper. Tua has an injury history (including a MAJOR one, plus 4 others), but Deshaun has also suffered a torn ACL.

Do you trust in the unproven NFL QB, or do ya go with the proven top-5 QB? We built up our draft cupboard to make a remarkable move to get an elite QB, yet Tua landed to us @ R1P5 last year, only due to his career-threatening injury.

I can roll with whatever decision we make, but it WILL be a franchise-defining decision, IMO.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

10 years from now, we’ll be talking about…
      — should’ve traded for Deshaun when we had the chance!
      — damn it, why did we trade Tua? He became great!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        or maybe…
        — Belicheat* did it AGAIN! He drafted a QB in the late rounds and found the next STUD!

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Does anyone look at this from the angle that you just invested a high 1st RD pick in a QB who played OK for a rookie, maybe not as good as a couple of other rookies (Herbert and Burrow, although Burrow got hurt), but definitely played OK. He had one atrocious game with a corps of 4th, 5th and 6th string WR’s against a team that is in the Championship game. What does it say when you turn around and give up on that player? This is not the same as the Rosen/Murray situation at all. I don’t think it’s a good look for an organization that does that but that’s just my take.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Man, I see it from ALL angles. This is a very good take, as well. I really DO like Tua.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, from an optics standpoint, it really doesn’t look good, especially when you throw in the wasted 2nd for Rosen on top of that. But I think it’s more important to get the right guy even if they have to admit they made a mistake.

If the FO believes what they have put out there about Tua, then I expect we won’t make that trade. Likewise, if the Texans do end up moving Watson and it isn’t to us, that is a huge vote of confidence in the young man.

I think MF13 put it well, this will almost certainly be a franchise defining moment for us that will be talked about for years to come. I don’t care whether my opinion on what I would do is right or wrong, I just really hope whatever they choose ends up being the right move for us.
