2021 Position Outlook – Safety

The Miami Dolphins secondary was the strongest unit on the 2020 roster, but it wasn’t necessarily because of the play of our safeties. I believe Eric Rowe had a strong season, but the strength of the secondary was based on the excellent play of the two corners, Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Bobby McCain was good, not great, and the younger players showed some promise here and there but failed to make a clear case to be a starter going forward. Clayton Fejedelem who was a free agent pickup and a good one because Fejedelem is a special teams ace.

Young Brandon Jones proved to be a reliable tackler and that’s good, but didn’t show anything special as far as instincts in pass coverage. Jones was seconds in tackles in the secondary behind Eric Rowe with 62 tackles, but his 1 pass defensed and zero interceptions seem to imply he’s better in run support and bringing down receivers than he is in pass coverage. Jones still had a nice rookie season after being drafted in the 3rd RD (#70). Kavon Frazier who came over from Dallas in free agency played in 15 games but he was almost solely on special teams. Good Ole Bobby McCain had somewhat of a bounce back season, but I don’t feel like he did anything that made him indispensable for this coming season. His cap hit versus salary make him a possible cap casualty as they can save about $5.6M if they cut him. This can open up a potential spot for either Brandon Jones or potentially a draft pick or a free agent signing.

In the 2021 draft, S Trevon Moehrig from TCU may be the best prospect for us. Moehrig 6’2 202 has the size and length that we don’t have with Bobby Mac. A former WR and special teams guy Moehrig worked hard to become a very strong defensive player. He has good ball skills with 4 INT’s in his Sophomore year and adding another 2 in a shortened season last year. He possesses good instincts and good long range speed along with a quick burst, ideal for coverage in the NFL where it could be anything from a RB, WR or TE. Jevon Holland is another good safety prospect but he may be similar to Bobby Mac in that he also plays the slot well and may end up a better player at slot CB than safety. This is not a great safety class and it appears as if Moehrig is the cream of the crop.

In free agency, Justin Simmons heads the class. He’s almost certainly out of range as he will garner somewhere around $15M per, so he will not be a Miami Dolphin. Former NY Jet Marcus Maye is also a top FA, but again, he will be out of our range. Former Steeler Sean Davis is a free agent and I liked him in that draft, very explosive and agile, ran a 4.46 40, 3.97 short shuttle which is very fast and a 6.64 3 cone which is elite agility. In the NFL though, Davis has been meh, starting at SS in his first 3 seasons and coming up with 5 INT’s those 3 years. The drafting of Terrell Edmunds (Bills Tremaine Edmunds brother) and then the trade for MFFF no doubt buried him on the depth chart. He may be worth a risk to resurrect his career. I don’t feel like safety is a position where we have to do anything, so it’s possible we just leave well enough alone and let a guy like Brandon Jones develop.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Days – Thanks for the great post. Thanks also for sticking with us. The truth is we are a community here, a very diverse community at that, and you couldn’t be more right that many of don’t see eye to eye on many topics. For example, some people here still think this is year 3 of the rebuild when it’s only year 2. Some people think we can slice and dice this team and give up all our draft capital and trade away all our best players as long we get Deshaun Watson. Who cares if we have a worse team than the Texans do? And then there’s politics, where at least we all feel exactly the same. Phew, at least we have that, right? 😛

  2. New Age's avatar New Age says:

This offseason has already been wild and amazing. Fitz is now supposedly leaning towards retirement and he had a job waiting for him somewhere before Watson, Stafford, and all the other QB drama. Imagine having so many options but suddenly they are almost non-existent before FA even hits.

We really should sell that in a way. Miami is such a wonderful destination, you’d rather retire than leave.

I don’t think the organization will ever have to worry about his work ethic, or personal ethics, and that fits right in with this regime, imho.
I believe he has “it”, now surround him with weapons and he WILL lead.

        100% agreed, Mr. Bookman.

I’m not as sold as you guys. And I watched last season too. My big problem was little connected deep…. and I mean over 15 yards. Putting it down to a rook needing growth, but thought journeyman Fitz just as good overall. Do think based on last year and how he was set up at Bama that he needs those speedster guys who get separation. Not so much a tight window dude.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Totally agreed and if we were to move on from him I think we’ll regret it.

People forget he had to rehab most of last offseason coming off of the hip injury. Now he can train like everyone else this offseason. Big difference. He also has an NFL season under his belt. I expect a much better Tua in 2021. And he wasn’t bad in 2020, he just hit some rookie bumps in the road.

People talk about Burrow and Herbert’s numbers but their teams were not in a playoff race, we were. So there was no reason to pull them when they did struggle. Coach Flo was trying to make the playoffs so if he thought Fitz could come in and help get the win he did it. Different scenarios but most people just focus on stats.

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I just saw a mock draft where the Bills took Najee Harris @ R1P30. WOW, that would suck for us. IMO, the Bills would have the Jim Kelly- Thurman Thomas- Andre Reed trifecta reborn as Josh Allen- Najee Harris- Stefon Diggs.

    Scary to think about…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And no, I’m not about playing Tic-Tac-Toe with other teams, just to block what they could get. But IMO, I’m beginning to think that Najee should be our R1P18 selection.

That dude can catch like a WR, he can run wild, he’s sizable to be a decent blocker with more training/technique at the pro level, and he’s an Offensive weapon.

Did anybody forget that he’s got ultimate chemistry with one Tua? LOL
I want Najee on our team!

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

        I agree

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Like all I hear about Najee and is a need. Lot of mocks have him lower than #18, but wouldn’t cry a river if we took him there at all. Now our first pick in the 2nd or even trading into the late first….would do the happy dance.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

We have 2 picks, right now before that, so hopefully we can match that with WR and RB.

Tua was less than a year removed from a potential career-ending injury when he started for us last year. Then you have the pandemic, where he didn’t even get a true offseason… he was just trying to recover from his gruesome injury, for one.

I think/hope that all of that had a lot to do with his Tua’s lack of success as our starter last year. I mean, he didn’t even have the time to develop chemistry with his receivers last years… not to mention his O-Line, 3 of which were rookies, too.

I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m making excuses for Tua, but I feel it should be a ‘mulligan’ for him, honestly. But I can say, he was 6-3 (quoting from memory) as our starter.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Geez, my typos above are pizzing me off! LOL
But you get the message, I hope.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But let it be known… as I read the tea leafs, I’m thinking we’re going to trade for Deshaun Watson. I’m sharply AGAINST doing as much, but I see it happening.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You bring up great reasons why Tua will do better, but he hasn’t yet. And how can we know he will until he does? Last year saw a game manager out there. A good one but you get the idea.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And YOU bring up great reasons as to why we might not yet trust him. It’s a gamble, bud. Do you believe Tua can become the same guy we saw at Alabama (prior to his significant injury?), or do we go with a sure thing in Watson?

        MUCH is at stake, here.

I’d rather continue rebuilding with our massive draft capital, than to part with most of it for Watson.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d go with Watson if the price was right, but don’t think it will be. So heck yeah am rooting for Tua to show it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You reiterated what I said just up the page. 🙂

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Najee is like a TE as a receiver. He’s as big as many LBs and bigger than safeties. I think he’s going to be a big time pro. I have no problem taking him at #18. Tua also hit him on some great pass plays at Alabama so there is a connection there.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just wanted to post this to show how even though some musical artists were known for a certain type of music doesn’t mean they can’t tap into other types of music that they love. This is really good. Star Child from KISS. 🙂

  9. if we want Najee Harris, WE will likely have to take him before the steelers pick. i cant see the steelers passing on him

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The disrespect Tua gets from our fanbase is crazy. One guy responded to Tua’s tweet with “How about unleashing multiple 60 yard bombs instead of dinking of dunking”. Do they have any recollection who was on our roster at the end of the season? Sometimes I hate our fans, they have no patience and behave like spoiled little brats.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

DeVante Parker playing at about 30-50%, Lynn Bowden Jr., a rookie in his own right who just got to the team Week 6, Isaiah Ford who was cut twice by us and the Patriots and Mack Hollins. Who was he throwing 60 yard bombs to? We weren’t going to beat them in a shootout, and that’s what that game quickly became when we couldn’t stop them in the 2nd QTR.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tua hit Grant, Gesicki, Parker and Williams right on the mark down the field multiple times that weren’t caught. I mean right on their hands. Were some defended well? Yes! But that’s all the QB can do is get it there. I have no issues with Tua’s arm strength and accuracy. How many times did we see a receiver “wide open” and he missed? I don’t remember that ever happening.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Life of an NFL QB on social media. Am sure Tom Brady gets death threats.

  11. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

We have a young and talented OL, can’t we just let these guys develop and add weapons? If Tua has time, a good play action game with a talented RB and WRs we should be set. He is a winner, let’s roll with him!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      YES!!!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I know lot of people argue that a dominant OL will make everyone else look better

      But that relationship is reciprocal

Having skill players make plays makes everyone’s job easier

I think this is the off-season for that improvement at skill player
I would be surprised if 2 of our first 3 picks are not skill players

  12. i agree with ya Mike that patience is in short supply
i know its been a really tough offseason for Tua to have to listen to all the BS that fans spew, and it wouldnt surprise Me if it motivates him more.
i wouldnt even consider giving up until after his rookie contract expires, if a QB has not done anything in 4 years , then he is undeserving of a big raise, and time to move on with someone else at that time

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – I’m not concerned about Tua dealing with the social media nonsense, I’m just saying it drives me crazy the lack of respect and patience I see from our fans. I don’t know why fans expect QB’s to be great right out of the gate. It happens occasionally, but it’s no indication of what happens season 2 or beyond. Some guys that started off good go into the tank, and some of the great ones just always play well. Some QB’s play in better situations than others too.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just saying don’t let it drive you crazy. And guess I am less on the Tua will be great side than others. Willing to wait though… unless we get say Watson or Wilson behind center. Then I’ll hope for that guy to burn it up.

  14. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MIKE E.; NO LACK OF RESPECT for Tua from me. I’m content to NOT enter the Watson Derby. Instead, I want to focus on IMPROVING THE TEAM AROUND TUA so that he can blossom into the player we all want him to be. WATSON had a great year, but his team sucked. If we give up too much to get him, Watson will have the “honor” of playing for ANOTHER team with major short comings.

TODAY IS HOCKEY DAY IN AMERICA!! And what a day it has been!!!
The Lightning started out sleep walking against an improved Black Hawks team. By early in the second period, the Bolts were behind 3-0 and looked horrible doing it. Then a Chicago player cheap-shotted a Bolts’ player and was thrown out of the GAME!!!
    ——————-
That cheap shot ignited the sleeping giant! By the end of that period Tampa Bay had rallied to take a 4-3 lead!! And, just to rub Chicago’s nose in it, the Lightning added 2 more third period goals to win going away 6-3. It’s the FIRST TIME I can remember a team being down 3-0 and coming back to DOUBLE THE SCORE on their opponent!
    ——————-
ANOTHER DAY of outrageously good weather! Highs in the low 70’s after a sunrise temperature of 55!! We’ve over 4 months of mostly sensational weather. And there’s more coming later this week.
We’re so fortunate to live in Florida.

HAPPY HOCKEY DAY IN AMERICA TO ALL OF YOU!

You always have to say wait and see with rookies, especially QBs. Let’s not act like Tua was Rosen. 😉

My point is I was saying the same stuff everyone else was saying but nobody replied to me. I was hurt very badly. 😉

  16. the best way for Tua to quiet his critics is have a pro bowl season and take the Dolphins to the Super bowl, lol
Im not betting against Tua, Hes too much of a fighter to not conquer this, and i believe He will be the franchise QB that we want

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      I agree.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

One problem here, David… IF we trade for Deshaun Watson, Tua will not have been given the chance to do what you say.

      • that is correct MF

I do like Watson, but I feel We have a Watson in the making thats already here, or maybe a Wilson, lol
i dont want to compare the two , without considering We already have Tua, and could trade down to get all kinds of playmakers and finish building the team.

if the Fins had an awesome team, and only needed a QB to complete it, then Yes, I would thing He would be the answer, that certainly isnt US

we all understand this team rebuild is not complete yet, and this years draft and FA is crucial for that goal to be met. a trade for Watson would eat up an enormous amount of draft capital, so the team would not improve immediately, even though the salary cap would go through the roof, damaging the other avenue of the rebuild, FA

its not in the fins best interest to trade for Watson IMO

  17. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

We are not trading for Deshaun Watson and i really have no idea how it makes sense. I really don’t. Help me.

  18. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

If our team was a QB short ala Chad Pennington then maybe we look. With so many holes/upgrades needed, invested with a promising (not close to sure fire) QB, and lots more talent needed, we need to knock it out of the park this year.

Last year helped. This year we need more. A lousy 2 cent opinion…lol.

  19. lets not forget how fortunate and difficult it was to get Tua, to just toss that away is foolish

the fins had to tank for a year and stockpile draft picks for the future, tank was completed, draft pick acquired, Tua selected, check on all
but the next phase for all that , was to USE those draft picks to finish the rebuild, well, here we are, what to do? stick to the plan, use the picks to finish the rebuild

trading for Watson was never part of the long term plan and goals

  20. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You did. Guess i’m too focused on the bs.

  21. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOUNG STANGER: Rather than offer Houston an ultra low-ball offer, I’d prefer to play the hand we decided to play. FLORES decided TUA was the way to go. NOW let’s give TUA a fighting chance to prove he WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE. Give Tua a really top-notch wide receiver. Give Tua a really good running back. Give Tua a certain-to-be-needed at some point REALLY GOOD O-Lineman in addition to the starting 5. And give the Fins’ defense 2-3 more impact players with their remaining draft picks this year and next year.

If we do that, the Fins, with just a bit of good fortune, will improve on their 10-6 record of last year and make the playoffs. The following season (2022), our goal is the Super Bowl.

Stripping us of many of our draft picks (and, maybe, Tua, too) will leave us back where we were when we had Marino. Potentially, Watson’s an All-Pro QB for many years. But he WON’T bring us another title because the rest of our team WON’T BE GOOD ENOUGH!!
    ———————–
HOCKEY DAY IN AMERICA brought us an unexpected delight: New Jersey’s 1-0 shutout of the Boston Bruins!!! To a Lightning fan, that’s big. It’s kinda like the Fins beating the Jets when the Jets were heavily favored!

I would trade Tua for Watson straight up, but might just be me. And yeah would take more than just that but figure there is a price we’d be willing to pay. Doubt it brings Watson to us but don’t see the harm in putting that out. Fully expect Tua to be our QB next year.

    Watson has won what?

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Why is it also so hard to just stay with a plan? Why must we veer off just because a QB became disgruntled in his current situation. I’m sure this plan has been a few years in the making and we finally had a solid winning season. Why flush it down the toilet just because of 1 player who hasn’t won anything yet? Yes, he’s played better than our current QB but our current QB may be much better next season and so can the rest of the team with the free agency and all our draft capital. Stay the course, and full speed ahead!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      ^

    • agreed Mike, the plan was good, and so far so good with it, the best course is to finish what we planned.
the fins are in great shape, a young franchise QB in the fold already, an improving defense, all we need is to finish the plan, by bringing in needed players with all that draft capitol We traded for

we got lucky the texans sucked last year, that number 3 pick is looking awesome, and its so valuable that we could trade it down and get even more picks.

  24. Tua won more games last year than Watson , if We are using the games won measure

obviously We cant use that, Texans will not give us Watson for Tua, plus a bunch of picks

  25. watson contract has him making 15 million this season, and 40 million next season, SMH

that 40 million wont work, Watson isnt so great he can do everything by himself, look at last year,
He did NOT do it all by himself

  26. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Interesting

“This is the kind of pre-draft season it’s been: There’s a first-round pass-rush prospect from the University of Miami named Gregory Rousseau. High school wideout/safety. College history, checkered. Year one: Played a few snaps as a freshman, got hurt, redshirted. Year two: ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year with 15.5 sacks. Year three: Opted out because of COVID concerns. Basically, four months of college game experience. No NFL Scouting Combine to probe him physically and mentally. No in-person visits with teams; Zoom meetings only. Rousseau is 20 years old.”

  27. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    More

“Best position in the draft: Wide receiver (again). In the last two drafts, teams have picked a total of 30 wideouts in the first three rounds. This year, Jeremiah has 19 receivers with grades in the top three rounds. When you see the recent draft depth of the position—third-round wideouts from the last three years: Terry McLaurin, Michael Gallup, Tre’Quan Smith, Diontae Johnson—I begin to think NFL teams should start treating the receiver position like running backs. Don’t waste a high pick on one; you can get a good one in the seventies, eighties, nineties overall.

“It’s almost the same every year now, Jeremiah said. “Last year, I had a record number of guys with top-three-round grades [27]. Not as much this year, but so many good options in the second, third, fourth rounds.” Most draft boards will have LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase and Alabama’s DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle among the top 12 picks. Kadarius Toney of Florida is Jeremiah’s fourth first-round wideout, but his favorite wideout at a bargain price (mid-round two) is Mississippi’s Elijah Moore: “There were games that nobody could cover him.””

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

All the more reason to trade down. Why draft Chase or Smith at 3, when you could have one of the top 3 or Pitts at 6, 8 or 9, plus a 1st next year and another 2nd this year?

If we get another 2nd, that may also slide a DE up to us at 36, then someone like Williams could be had with the extra extra 2nd

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That is correct! Someone posted the highlights on Elijah Moore not long ago. I like him a lot. He would be a very good slot WR for us. Their are about 9 others I like in the 2-4 round range:
    Dyami Brown
    D’Wayne Eskridge
    Tylan Wallace
    Amari Rodgers
    Dazz Newsome
    Ihmir Smith-Marsette
    Whop Philyor
    Anthony Schwartz
    Marquez Stevenson

    Phelon,

I agree you can get a great WR later but, thankfully for them, they still impact the game so much more than RBs, and last so much longer too. Having that one amazing WR has helped turn average guys like Dalton and Ryan into playoff contenders

That’s how business works. You have to keep evaluating and changing. What was good yesterday may not be good today, but I don’t want any part of Watson.

He’s the kind of QB, that will drive you nuts with his potential, then not deliver

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In 2016 we drafted Tunsil and Howard. Hard to believe we could draft 2 better players this year, altjough it does give Merit to staying at 3 or keep the perpetual pick for Tunsil alive by getting a 2022 1st

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The implication certainly seemed to be Van Noy wondering how it was that New Orleans was able to keep both players while the Dolphins weren’t able to do the same with him.

Well, the Dolphins’ decision obviously speaks to how they viewed Van Noy compared to how the Saints viewed their two players. It’s also fair to mention that Jordan is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and Davis was an All-Pro in 2019. Van Noy, while being a solid player, has never earned any postseason accolade in seven NFL seasons.

A little evidence to show KVN wasn’t a cap casualty

    Remember when …

    – starting a rookie QB “too soon” was considered reckless, not just by the teams but also by most fans.

    But now …

    – rookie QBs are starting to be ‘flash-evaluated’ on first year results.

I don’t think football philosophy has changed as much as the pressure from ‘immediate gratification’ fan bases. That’s all I have for today. 😀

It’s easier to start as a rookie today, than it was back in the 80s or even 90s, because you can’t hit the QB, you can’t hit the receivers, they call D holding now, and you have more running QBs, that can get by with their feet, instead of taking the time to learn how to read a D.

Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed had their moments, but Jones would add a big-play, tackle-shedding star behind second-year passer Tua Tagovailoa. The question is whether Miami’s inventive, forward-thinking front office believes in paying a running back (basically the least-coolest concept in today’s NFL) over grabbing help in the draft.”

the fact he got so few snaps means the coaches didnt want him on the field, he must have been in the coaches dog house because of his partying.

  62. The first incident came when Tennessee State police broke up an off-campus party that Wilson had attended during training camp. In their report, the police documented that Wilson went to the second-floor balcony, where he appeared to briefly consider jumping. He received a trespass warning.

The second incident occurred when Wilson was arrested and charged with a DUI in September when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a concrete wall.

  65. wilson is HUGE< 6'7' 355 pounds

We switch 7ths for obvious talent. If he doesn’t pan out, we really wasted nothing. He’s basically a free pick at that level of compensation. I’d also rather use #18 on Najee than pay a lot of money for someone else’s used RB.

    Watson…Just Say No!

  68. i doubt Wilson can keep 355-360 on in Miami. he will likely trim down to 340 or so, working out in the heat will take some of that off, lol

this could be an answer at RT, if Flo can keep him focused on football instead of drinking and partying

They get 3 firsts and Tua and it only cost us 2 really. Maybe some other picks are thrown in there as well.

Wilson needs some work, but we really have a year to evaluate him, since the OL is set, except C.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I suspect Tennessee was going to waive him bc that’s very little compensation

Prediction, If the 49er’s make a move on a QB, Jimmy G will end up in NE. Heard rumblings that they may trade for Darnold or sign the likes of Bridgewater or Newton. They could also sign Fitz and draft a rookie like we did. Going to get real interesting with the QB situation in this league. NE will always be in a win mow mode as long as Belicheat is there and he is still chasing Shula’s record. Will take him to long with a rookie unless they draft Mac Jones.

    • he is a dominant run blocker, the Fins have not run the ball enough

its great to kick the tires and see if this big guy can help the team,
the seventh round swaps are miniscule compensation for a former first round pick

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sounds like he was always going to be a work in progress, and the Titans didn’t progress him, then he probably got frustrated and had off field issues.

No preseason last year for a guy like him, just made things worse. Titans drafted him too early, but for his potential.

He’s now got a strike, but since he’s still a work in progress nothing really has changed, from a year ago, except maybe his maturity level

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Right – I got the sense that he played on the other side of a blue chip Ot in college, was very impressive to scouts, but needed time to develop
