Offseason questions linger – What will the Dolphins do?

March 11th, 2021. Spring is rapidly approaching, the weather is warming up, and so are the rumors. It’s too easy, the 2021 Miami Dolphins have a decent amount of cap space available, 9th in the NFL at just over #33M, but we’re also armed with a bunch of enticing draft picks, thanks to the Houston Texans. The Dolphins own picks #3, #18, #36 and #50, 4 picks in top 50 picks. We also have picks #81 (RD 3) and pick #124 (RD 4), and finally #207 (RD 6), 7 picks in all. There is also potential for us to trade back too, but I have no problem with focusing on quality rather than quantity. If there’s a player that can make a huge impact on our roster right now at #3, go get that player. Of course, we may trade this entire draft, Xavien Howard, Jerome Baker and Tua Tagovailoa to acquire the messiah, Deshaun Watson, so there’s that too. It’s just so easy to look at our team as the perfect trading partner for anyone, including the QB that in my mind doesn’t actually get traded. There’s also #1 on our roster who we prioritized with our #5 pick in last year’s draft. This is where we wanted to be, get our QB, and then have the ability to build the roster around that QB.

We definitely have holes to fill, especially with the surprise cut of LB Kyle Van Noy. We’re looking to upgrade and get younger too. I would expect a LB to be drafted by us, not necessarily with our first or even our 2nd, but it’s going to happen. We need a center unless we re-sign Ted Karras or look to FA once again to find one like we did last year. Corey Linsley is available and will cost similarly to re-signing Ted Karras. We may choose to draft a center and Creed Humphrey and Landon Dickerson are the 2 top centers in the draft. We also must upgrade our WR receiver corps and as the pictures I posted show, I would love to bring in former Lions WR Marvin Jones Jr. He’s such a solid, consistent receiver, and right now now we have none. I said it, ZERO. Oh this guy might become that, and this guy if he’s healthy could be that, but they haven’t and they might not. We need one professional receiver that suits up every game and produces and that’s why I like Jones. Jr. That wouldn’t stop us from drafting a stud WR and I believe we will, the more weapons the better.

Our linebacker corps just got thinner due to the release of Van Noy, and we only had thumper Elandon Roberts on a 1 year contract and he was injured very late in the season so he won’t be back. Vince Biegel is also a FA as is Kamu Grugier-Hill, leaving only Jerome Baker, Andrew Van Ginkel, Calvin Munson and Sam Eguaoven as our LB group. We need to find an impact player for that front 7 to pair with Jerome Baker who had his finest season as a Miami Dolphin last season.

We need an upgrade at RB, and rumors are flying that Aaron Jones and the Miami Dolphins are a match. I’m not as enthusiastic about this pairing as some people are. I think Jones was a nice piece in the GB offense, I don’t see him as the workhorse back we may need to lean on. To be fair, he’s a player not too unlike the Saints Alvin Kamara, smooth receiver who can run the ball in spots, but both of these guys aren’t pounders that wear the defense down, they’re more finesse backs. I think we have 2 guys on the roster already like that in Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. We need a true lead back and Jones is just barely a 1000 rusher and I think we should aim higher and pay less.

We could also use an upgrade at S, but it’s possible that last year’s 3rd RD pick Brandon Jones is given a larger role this year pairing with Eric Rowe, but good ole Bobby McCain looks like he could be facing down the guillotine himself. We can save about $6M if we cut him and I’ve always been a McCain advocate, but last year he had his chance and he didn’t really show an awful lot. With Nik Needham proving adequate in the slot and of course the presence of last year’s first RD pick Noah Igbinoghene, Mac faces some tough odds. What do you think we do???

GO DOLPHINS 2021!!!

  1. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I wonder if we’ll take a sniff at either Eric Fisher or Mitchell Schwartz. I don’t think we will, but I wonder…

Quite honestly, I’d rather spend FA $$$ on a Tackle, rather than a Center. Nevertheless, we have a great need at the Center position… and I’d rather not draft a Center early. With any luck, Isaiah Wilson is our answer at Tackle, and we just need to sign a vet Center.

I suppose the question becomes: is Isaiah Wilson to be trusted to become all of what he was drafted to be? If not, address the RT position for the southpaw Tua…

  2. thanks for the new article Mike, good work!
i think the Dolphins will let Grant and Mcain go, and possibly Fedeljam, because his name is too hard to spell, lol JK

    cap casualties

  3. it wont save much money, but i wouldnt be surprised if Malcolm Perry also gets cut.

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Awesome write Mike E. I’m right with you about signing Corey Linsley in FA, or maybe Ted Karras. OL needs a vet leader , and not thinking Flowers is that. The kids can come at the skill positions or LB/edge. Have some vets there.

  5. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

How about trading for Orlando Brown Jr?

  6. its easy to forget part time wilson, Landrys piss poor replacement, but hes still on the team draining money for nothing and the chicks for free, and will need to be cut as well

that was a huge mistake bringing in part time wilson and Amendola, to replace Landry, SMH

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Just like Mike, I’ve been calling for us to make a move for Marvin Jones from the Lions. And that was before I even realized that he has 4 arms!

He can take Grant’s spot, and we’ll never see a pass going his way get dropped.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Nice write up Mike.

I’m curios about this statement: Corey Linsley is available and will cost similarly to re-signing Ted Karras.

I have no idea what Lindley or Karras will cost, but I’d think Corey would be much higher, if not he’s the no-brainer choice

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, good recap about what we’ve all been discussing for weeks. LOL

  11. KC needs OL, I watched the super bowl, lol

if they need OL< and dont need these guys, gotta wonder why

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Cap he’ll

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Or cap hell

      • no effort made to restructure them? im not overly concerned about KC, they arent My team, but how will Mahomes get his passes off with those open doors that replaced these two, at the super bowl? if they were injured, and the replacements were horrible, KC has NO lineman worth a damn IMO
they not only were open doors, they even had welcome mats out, lol JK

        they were BAD, not kidding

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How do you know they didn’t try to restructure them?

      • they May have tried, but it doesnt appear as if they will retain them

if they were vital to protecting Mahomes, they should have been resigned, period

how much is Mahomes contract? yea

Hes the priciest QB in the history of the NFL< if they dont protect Him, they are beyond stupid, lets see how it all plays out

but OL are everywhere, in FA and the draft, we dont have to overly focus on these two expensive veterans

if they arent cap friendly for KC< they wont be cap friendly for us either

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You’re just throwing generalizations out there, but not sure why we’d want to sign them

      • i dont have any specifics on KC plan for protecting Mahomes, not My problem, lol

but yea, its only logical they would attempt to protect their most valuable asset, all the more reason I am not wanting these two.
but maybe the FO sees something, who knows

im really hoping we just draft a center and a guard, we dont really need FA if they are too expensive

  12. KC needs to get some pass blocking , or Mahomes will turn into a pinata and all his money will spill out, lol

  13. Maybe Mahomes will be disgruntled and want to come to Miami, lol

BUT his contract would be a total nightmare, he would eat up a huge chunk of the cap, wont happen

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I thought I saw 5 arms? Maybe cause it has a blue glove on it and the other 4 have white gloves. Maybe that one don’t work so well so he wears a blue glove on it so the QB knows witch hand not to throw at. lol

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This might be a good year to sign FAs, but I don’t want a high priced C or RB. WR might be OK.

If we’re going to sign someone big make it Dupree

  16. one of the big knocks on FA is , they are expensive one year wonders for the most part
they dont seem to stay long

the Dolphins will take some, of course, but the real meat and potato rebuilding of the team will come from all that draft capitol IMO

rookies are usually here for their 4 year contract, and are always cap friendly, hopefully we retain the best ones

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I almost wrote in the article that Jones has a huge advantage of having 4 full size arms and one smaller one, which could be the one that gets under the ball on those low throws. lol

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Based on the position of that 5th arm, I’d say that is his ‘strong’ hand. Nobody wants him catching the football with that one, even if it’s gloves up, lol.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Releasing Albert Wilson will be a $5.183M cap savings and a $2.33M cap hit. Allen Hurns would be a $2.883M cap savings and a $3.366M cap hit. Jakeem Grant a $4.687M cap savings and a $1.8M cap hit. If we’re revamping the WR position this is where we’ll likely going to do it for cap space and roster spots.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, I agree. But do we really need that much more cap space… and to sign whom?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe a Marvin Jones and a James Conner. Then we can draft a WR and a RB, along with Bowden and Perry competing for that multiple spot – WR, Wildcat, jet sweep and return man.

To me Parker, Williams and Gesicki are our top receivers but two of them struggle with durability issues. But they are quality players. We’ll see. I do see the offense being revamped quite a bit this offseason.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

With each and every cut we’ve made or will make, I think it screams Deshaun Watson. Of course, we could trade for him and then immediately re-up him, making his cap hit that much more palatable.

Let it be known, this is NOT what I want to happen: I’m a Tua guy.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Deshaun Watson doesn’t throw a monkey wrench into the mix, it throws a rocket ship into the mix. I’ll address that when it happens. I’m looking at the team from where we are right now.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s not how this board works! LOL 😉

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But all joking aside, Deshaun IS a real possibility to us Phins. Speculation is impossible to contain, everyone on the edge of their seats, much like an Alfred Hitchcock work of art. 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like I said, I think he’s a talented player. We here believe in developing players at all positions. I think with an offseason, with some OTAs with more reps, more repetitions like any player, they develop and get and get better. And I think he feels the same way.”

When I read that, my first thought was, OK he was telling Tua he’s our guy.

Then I started thinking maybe he was talking to him face to face and letting him know we’re looking at Watson, and giving him the “it isn’t you, it’s me” speech, lmao.

Jakeem Grant a $4.687M cap savings and a $1.8M cap hit. If we’re revamping the WR position this is where we’ll likely going to do it for cap space and roster spots.

Not exactly how the cap works. The numbers are correct, but the text isn’t.

The 5.183m for Wilson is his cap hit, if he’s on the roster this year. The 2.33m is his dead cap, if he’s not. 2.85m is the savings, if cut, the difference of the 2 numbers

  42. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the best Wilson to get is Zach Wilson, he’s by far the best QB in this draft, better than Trevor Lawrence, will be better than Watson, if he’s there at #3 you jump on him! huge mistake to pass him up.

  43. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I doubt we will go for any top FA’s, Golladay may get 17 mil per year, to rich for Grier & co

  44. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think we go 2nd tier in FA and do limited time contracts

  45. Watson isnt coming here
Flores squelched the watson rumours when asked in a presser about it.

he stated they are excited to see the improvement in year two of Tua, and will be using the draft and FA to get some playmakers in here, guys that are not only talented, but will mesh with the team

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you can’t go by what Flores says, he’s not going to come out and say we are all in on Watson, He’s going to appear satisfied with what he has in Tua, negotiation 101.

That said he may be satisfied with Tua, that would be a huge mistake.

  46. Flores mentioned that TUa was a rookie coming off a hip injury, with no otas and presason, and tossed into the fire

then he said he expects to see, and is excited about TUa, and wants to see the big improvement on year 2

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

all that shit doesn’t matter, it’s not about reading Ds and getting acclimated, it’s about flawed mechanics in his throwing motion, he has a weak arm and has to adjust to that deficit in his throwing motion, I doubt that’s an offseason fix, not sure that can be fixed at all

    • Flores opinion doesnt matter? and yours does? why is that? are you the Dolphins new coach now?

  47. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

based on Tua’s play, i can’t imagine that this FO would just bring a run of the mill back up in, if they do that we will be in deep shit.
Tua will not survive as a starter in the NFL.
Based on what Flores is saying that seems to be the direction they’re headed in. Fitz does not appear to be part of that plan. i think the hang up on Fitz is about $$$, with the lower cap issue miami wont pay fitz.
i hope that’s just smoke and we get a quality starting QB.
after watching Tua this FO would be stupid to rely on him.

  48. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

David, all ORob is saying is there’s smokescreens running rampant this time of year, because no team wants another team to know what their plan is.

For example, let’s say Flores is OK with Tua, but would really like to upgrade if possible.

If he tells everyone that Tua sucks and we don’t want him, then he has no trade value and other teams will know we’re in the market for a QB.

End of April, we’ve signed or traded for any QB, other teams now know we’re All in on QB at 3. Why would Flores do that?

QB could go 1-4, but no one knows what we’re going to do so…no way does this board get the top 10 picks right in this year’s board mock draft

Always knew bars should be the first places closed to stop Covid spread, but this reason is one hadn’t thought of.
    ———————-
“Bars are particularly dangerous Because not only do they tend to be crowded but a lot of times, they’re loud, and so you have to shout and that increases the spread of the virus, you’re spewing out the virus.”
    — Catherine Troisi, PhD, an infectious disease epidemiologist at UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston.

I was at a restaurant/bar Wednesday night that had live music. It was kind of an indoor/outdoor place but most of the sides were closed up so it was like indoors. Not one person (including me) wore a mask. Not even when first showing up. It was at 100% capacity, not an empty table. Yes, we almost had to shout to hear each other. I just said f-it, I’m tired of this shit already.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You took your chance on it. And chances are you neither spread it or got it, but chances are someone there did. I’ve been playing it real safe, but that is my choice.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They need to stop spreading the COVID BS. This theory has been out there a long time, and they want it to be a crowded bar issue, but what industry allows such a thing?

The pandemic isn’t even a pandemic, they just said it was to take over our lives. So they want us to believe a death rate of .5% is a pandemic. That rate is close enough to the flu.

Schools never should’ve been closed and states shouldn’t have been either. They scammed most of the country all to win an election.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So If Covid is just a scam to influence the US election…. why is it in so many other countries?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I said the severity is a scam.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If it’s not a scam why are dem led states like CA and NY on total lockdown and have the worst death rates?

These lockdowns don’t help anyone. You still have to be smart, but the lockdowns weren’t necessary.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe they made the wrong moves on it. Just don’t see what the election has to do with it. CA and NY were going to go Dem no matter what happened….so why should the election matter?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

BTW — you got me curious. NY’s death rate is #2 in the country, but Cal’s is #30.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You know what the election had to do with it, it allowed mail in votes, that was highly abused.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Lot of states had been doing mail-in votes for years, including my own Florida. Maybe just don’t see that as such a big issue as you. And gonna sitck with Covid was not made up. If real mail-ins make sense.

Yes, I am a fan of both. I am a Reds fan first! I grew up with both living in north central Indiana. This goes back to when they were in different divisions. All my uncles were Cubs fans and always took me to Cubs games. In fact, only Reds games I have been to were at Wrigley.

Flores said Tagovailoa’s development was a factor in the choice of replacements for offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, who departed after one season. Eric Studesville and George Godsey were promoted as co-coordinators from other positions on the staff.

“Continuity was a big thing for me in making that decision,” Flores said. “I wanted that for Tua and a lot of young players we had offensively.”

Special place in hell for Richard Pusey.
    —————————
An Australian man pleaded guilty this week to the rare offense of outraging public decency. Last year, Richard Pusey was driving his Porsche on a highway when four officers pulled him over for speeding.

As the officers were arresting Pusey a passing truck driver veered into the lane and plowed into their cars on the side of the road. The officers all died.

Pusey, 42, had been standing away from the officers. Before fleeing, he pulled out his phone and filmed the officers, some of whom were pinned under the truck, for more than three minutes.

In the video, he can be heard blaming the officers for ruining his car. “Amazing. Absolutely amazing. All I wanted to do was go home and eat my sushi, and now you have f—ed my f—ing car.”

I hate when they say the draft value chart isn’t the end all. It was never meant to be, it was meant as a guide, so the team that’s motivated has to pay more or going after a QB with a top pick…it was intended to be a baseline

Who knows? i guess it will boil down to the asking price, one thing that is intriguing is the no trade clause Watson has. i would think he wants to come to Miami and that’s huge. could affect the compensation, trade back acquire more 1st rnders use that like we did in the Rosen trade.

  82. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just did some studying on Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson. Dude gets to the outside quickly like former Clemson RB CJ Spiller… only Etienne is larger in build. He can’t run between the Tackles unless a BIG HOLE is opened… reminding me of our former Lamar Miller.

Yes, Etienne has decent hands, and that’s a plus. I must note that Trevor Lawrence is arguably (via the media) the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck… thus, Etienne profited from opposing Defenses trying to stop Lawrence.

Etienne will fight for yardage with success against ‘B-level’ teams, but he’s easily taken down by ‘A-level’ teams… but for a few instances.

I’m not done examining Etienne (nor am I trashing him), but I’m already viewing him as a R2 selection… not nearly on the same level as SEC RB Najee Harris, who I’d strongly consider in R1 (@R1P18).

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

PS: Etienne does his best work while UNTOUCHED… that’s not going to happen at the NFL level, see Reggie Bush… and I am NOT comparing Etienne to Reggie Bush, either!

Etienne is a 2nd rounder, IMO.
