Dolphins very active before the 2021 NFL Draft

The first big mover was actually a subtraction from the roster as the Dolphins parted ways with LB Kyle Van Noy after recently (last season) signing him to a 4YR/$51M deal. That move was followed by the eventual trade between the Dolphins and the Texans which sent DE Shaq Lawson to HOU for ILB Benardrick McKinney. The Dolphins gave the Texans our 6th RD 2021 pick in exchange for their 2021 7th RD pick. Lawson played both OLB and DE for the Dolphins last season but never really hit his stride in our defense. Van Noy was brought here for his leadership and his playmaking, but the surprising rise of OLB Andrew Van Ginkel helped make Van Noy expendable. While AVG played mostly weak side and and Van Noy played primarily strong, both were interchangeable. I’m guessing the new #55 will undergo a uniform number change as the Eagles would say Ol’ 55, Jerome Baker owns that number. McKinney will definitely solidify the middle next to Baker and and the bigger (6’4 260) McKinney brings more physicality there while Baker brings the sideline to sideline quickness and speed.

In addition to McKinney, the Dolphins further solidified the run defense with the addition of DT Adam Butler. Butler was a rotational guy on the Patriots defensive line with only 12 starts in 4 seasons but he played in all but one game, and he averaged about 45% of the defensive snaps, so he had a good amount of playing time. He’s a DT that gets good penetration, with 20 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and 22 QB hits over parts of 4 NFL seasons. Unfortunately for former Dolphins DT Davon Godchaux, that most likely seals his fate and he most likely will not be returning here. (Update!) Godchaux has signed a 2 year deal with the Patriots, thanks to a couple of FMU NFL insiders.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Dolphins signed RB Malcolm Brown from the LA Rams. Brown while never a premier ballcarrier or workhorse, he brings a more physical running style than what we currently have in Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Patrick Laird. Brown was basically the 3rd cog in the Rams run game behind Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson. Brown had a career high 419 yards on 101 carries with a 4.1YPC. He also caught 23 balls for 162 yards and had 5 rushing TD’s. I believe this still leaves the door wide open to draft a RB, even an early pick as I think we still need a talent upgrade there. The Dolphins just recently signed former Texans WR Will Fuller to a 1 year deal. Honestly, I never wanted any part of Fuller because although he has the speed we need, he’s a guy that has a tough time staying on the field, and considering the fact that we already have that in DeVante Parker, that doesn’t give our young QB any kind of stability when guys are constantly missing time. In any case, the Dolphins do get a guy who averages on the high end of YPR (14.9) overall but a career high 16.7YPR last season along with 8 TD’s. Also keep in mind that both Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson are set to return this season after opting out due to COVID last season. Wilson and Hurns together count less than $8M against the cap so don’t count them out just yet.

We didn’t get Joe Thuney, David Andrews or even re-sign Ted Karras, so the Dolphins decided to gamble on former ravens C Matt Skura. Much like Fuller was to me, Skura wasn’t really on my radar. Skura was a 4 year started for a stout Ravens O-line, but he has had injury issues, most recently having a devastating injury 11/19 in which he tore just about anything and everything in his knee including his ACL/PCL/MCL and dislocating his knee cap. To Skura’s credit, he toughed it out last season starting 12 games and playing in 15. As to whether he’s an upgrade over Ted Karras remains to be seen, but Skura was definitely the less expensive option. It’s once again, possible we draft a center with Creed Humphrey, Landon Dickerson Josh Myers, and Trey Smith available. Dickerson and Humphrey could go as early as 2nd RD but the others should be available in the middle rounds.

There are rumors still swirling linking former Seahawks RB Chris Carson and the Dolphins. While I have no problem with bringing in Carson, in my mind at least it would have made the signing of Malcolm Brown unnecessary, but Brown at $1.75M hardly breaks the bank. If we do get Chris Carson, that would almost certainly turn our attention away from drafting a RB early in this draft, meaning no Najee Harris, Javonte Williams or Travis Etienne.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Thanks, did not know that. today’s my day off, still trying to catch up on the frenzy. To be honest, all the player movement, and specifically all the one year contracts to me take some of the fun out of being a fan. It’s like who are you even rooting for?

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — now that have read the whole thing…… an awesome break down of what we have done. A lot of it might feel sorta of middle of the road, but we didn’t pledge a lot of bucks going years forward. Think Greir and especially Flores want to see the guys in the locker room and on the field. Gonna be a build through the draft team….. and I like that.

More likely the fact that the Patriots signed him to a 16Mil 2 year contract seals his fate more than us signing butler. Just saying.

Carson isn’t a journeyman. He was drafted and played his entire 4 year contract with Seahawks rushing for over 1000 yards in 2018 & 2019 averaging over 4.2 yards a carry all 4 years. He is also a decent receiving back with 37 rec each of the last 2 seasons.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

^ Agreed! Like I said, if we get him here for more than a 1 year contract, I don’t see the need to draft a RB early.

  18. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Seems 90% of league contracts this offseason are 1 year deals ,likely based on lower cap, and expectations it will rise substantially next year … players don’t want to sign long term at low $$, so prolly teams saying we do this now , you outperform it we can make better and longer this time next year

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s the one thing I hate about the NFL. I agree that’s the cause for so many 1 year deals. I just hate it because it’s such a temporary thing, and more often than not, those players end up going elsewhere after this season.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Yep. I really like the Fuller signing as long as he can stay on field. Has had hammy issues almost every year… keep him long term would be awesome

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

All the one-years have been hard to miss. Cap should go up going forward, but also might mean a sign of things to come. Rookies are cheaper and on long-term deals. Guys going on 2nd contracts have to be that much better.

    ———————
I was never blown away by Carson. I think a lot of his success was as a result of the offense he played in and the skill people around him. I don’t think the Seahawks thought that highly of him also because they were always looking to replace him

  23. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Skura definitely feels like “the best we could get” and is a backup if a rookie outplays him. Last year he was recovering from some severe injuries (my brother in law is a Ravens fanatic)… fully healthy he barely gets into top 2/3s of centers at best.
Pats were greedy when it came to centers. Like they were ‘blocking’ us more than anything.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Skura got $1.75 mil. That’s good back-up money. Think it high risk and perhaps your starter. We have Deiter too.

Mock drafts are for entertainment purposes only BUT there are a lot of great interior OL available in the top 20 picks of the 2nd round. A trade back with Carolina, for example, would give us give us 3 of those picks (36, 39, 50)… Davis, Leatherwood, Humphrey would be easily had with one of those 3 picks. At least one!
Colts OL plus Taylor at RB is a good model I think. Keep the defenses in the box. Just thinking with my fingertips.

  26. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL at the Pets winning 14 games and the Lions losing 18. The Pets got better, but they still have Newton throwing the ball. I say 10 wins tops for them, but I’d buy the 9-7 box. But oh the joy of listening to the Bucs vs Pets SB talk all effing year.

  27. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The league signs a giant new deal spreading football out to streaming sites, etc. putting a ton of money in their pocket, and Steve, you say this is why you back the owners- because the more the players get paid, the more we have to pay to get all these streams and such? What kind of goofy logic is that? lol

  28. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

One more thought.. before getting back to work…

As good as our defense was last year regarding points… we struggled against the run (16th in yds/game) but not as much as 2019 (27th in yds/game).

The next step toward being an elite D is to get into top five of this category.

Only two defensive draft prospects, imo, have a chance to make a difference in getting us to that level: Parsons and Owusu-Koramoah. Both are sideline to sideline and excellent tacklers. I’d be shocked if one of them is not in a Fins uniform next year.

Chris Carson is coming off a year where he had less than 700 yards and he’s got a lot of wear and tear in general

I really dont want to end up in the same place as last year at RB after the vets don’t work out. The nfl grind in running backs is hard. I generally don’t like relying on free agents. Nfl running back careers start to decline fast

So I think we should still add a RB

But I do think, a Carson signing will make a player like Etienne more viable

We are going to need multiple backs one way or another

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we sign Carson, we’ll have 4 quality backs. I think Gaskin and Ahmed showed they can play and Brown can do a lot of different things. Remember pass protection is huge and vet backs are usually further along in that area. As long as the running game is effective who cares who they are and how we obtained them.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If the lawyer has text messages implicating Watson they weren’t the ones he released today. You’d think he’d go with his best first.

We’re still primed to make a blockbuster trade [so long as it sends a $$$ player(s) to another team], but I don’t see it happening (Deshaun Watson or Danielle Hunter), for obvious reasons.

I like how we’ve been looking at FAs but balking at big money and playing the 2nd and 3rd tier game. Add some starter/rotational guys and some depth/STs. Set up for the draft. I think OL and Edge may be what we do early. Then WR and RB in whatever order.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think EDGE is a screaming need at this point. So long as we address it within the first 2 rounds, cool.

Can you imagine if we’ve vetted Micah Parsons what with his allegations, and draft him to be an OLB to rush the passer? Of course, he’d ultimately be moved back inside after a year of two. That would be SICK!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t put him anywhere exclusively, I’d play him all over the place. Lawrence Taylor wasn’t a pure pass rusher at NC, the Giants figured out what he can do. I see some of those same traits in Parsons coming out of college. Not saying he’s the next LT before people start getting nuts. I see a versatile LB with elite potential at the next level.

Forget the allegations, the law, NFL and teams will figure that out. As a prospect he’s a top 5 talent.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Do you remember when you asked me about Micah Parsons a couple/few months ago? I’d told you that I don’t think we need him, being we’ve got a nice stable of LBs. Well, that’s all changed now, hasn’t it?!!

So yes, I’m back to Micah… but if any of these allegations are true, forget him. But I will 100% agree with ya: he’s a top-5 talent in this draft class.

If Micah comes out clean (or if it seems he’ll come out clean)… he checks all of the boxes for us.

And yes… play him ALL OVER the place… just like JT’s ‘Elephant’ role.

Lol not only those guys but we’re also of course making their first 2 picks

M13, yes I do remember and I’ve been a fan of Micah Parsons since the new year when I usually start looking at the draft. I think he’s going to be one of those guys that impacts games wherever he ends up, and I don’t think the hazing allegations are going to derail his career.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Parsons can be versatile like Van Noy but better. Maybe like a Khalil Mack type. Not as big but he reminded me of him when I watched video of him.

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The team seems to be really high on Van Ginkel who had a solid rookie season and got bigger and improved his skills in year two. Looks like we hit on this 5th rounder as a good fit in our defense.

Both have solid size, adequate speed, but they’re good football players. I think VG has more upside than VB, but I’m glad VB is back though.

I think there’s a recent video of Isaiah Wilson, smoking a device that may have oil in it “dabbing”
I doubt that will go over very well with his new coach.

no wonder the titans dumped him.

our cap numbers are down, with the rookie class cap hit it would appear cuts must be made, this may also be a reason to trade back for future picks to avoid paying the #3 over all pick.

Cap at 12.27m with the Scarlett signing. He only cost us 200k off of the cap.

Duke Riley numbers not yet in, so we still have a little money to play with before we have to play with the cap.

The cap will jump significantly in future years, so no real need to worry, if we start pushing contracts to the future.

These 2 signings bring depth to the Edge, removes any thought of hole there and both are STs aces.

Defense is set from a depth perspective, time now for upgrades. BPA on D likely, but we could use that quick twitch pass rusher, and don’t rule out FA to fill it.

Clowney, Ingram, Aldon Smith, and Carlos Dunlap could provide what we need for a year

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

with 12.5 left and 11.5 to sign draft class seems like we are done, especially with high priced FAs

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

8m for draft class, but that’s not for several more months. This is a year, when you shouldn’t worry about an FO, that’s mortgaging the future, because of the down cap year and we know the cap is going up drastically.

I expect several reworked contracts. We may be past the point of getting rid of players for cap savings

I really like Duke Riley coming out of LSU but he has been about average as a LB. Not really sure how he was used by the Falcons and Eagles though. He is coming off probably his best season. I know it was a contract year, but, he is one of those fast smaller LB’s 6’1, 230. He is also a ST ace and ST captain. I like this signing!

Presumably, the $4,577,508 of Isaiah Wilson’s remaining guarantees in his 2021 through 2023 contract years voided last season so the Dolphins don’t have any salary cap charges for releasing him.
