Dolphins News and Why I Miss the NFL Combine

“The Underwear Olympics” as some people call it. Regardless of that smear, I feel like the combine has its place, and just like any piece of information, if you’re doing your analysis correctly, it’s another piece of data you use to form your final report, not the only piece. The problem of not having a NFL Combine is the information you get from Pro Days, which are not sanctioned by the NFL, can be slanted, or maybe I should just say ARE slanted. Each college program wants their athletes to succeed because it helps their program succeed. It seems like all the top WR prospects that actually ran at their Pro Day ran sub 4.4 times. It’s not impossible that it’s true, but more than likely those hand held timers (homers) shaved a bit to make that happen. I like when each player is running on the same strip of turf and timed by the same guys and called out if they lean a little too forward or don’t start from the right position. Geez, these guys don’t even wear shirts anymore! Will they be running in jock straps soon, or maybe without them? I suspect that next year we’ll be back to the good ole combine as it was and they will have to wear shorts, shirts and those dreaded heavy numbers on the shirts that most likely easily add a few tenths of a second to all timed events.

Now on to Dolphins news, even if it’s old news. The Dolphins were involved in 2 trades, likely synchronized trades with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. The net result of both trades for the 2021 draft is that the Miami Dolphins will now pick at #6 in RD1 instead of #3, but we have acquired no further compensation in this draft. That compensation doesn’t arrive until 2022 and 2023. We still have picks 6, 18, 36, 50, 81, 156, 231 and 258. Definitely top heavy with two selections in each of the first 2 rounds and no 4th RD selection. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade up or trade back and either lose a pick or gain a pick here and there. The most important thing is finding players that make your team better, no matter when you are selecting. We have flexibility and draft capital to get what we want, so now we hope that we want is on target. The Dolphins have also signed DT John Jenkins to a 1 year contract. Jenkins last played DT/DE for the Dolphins in 2019 and spent 2020 with the Chicago Bears.

Offense or defense? Which side gets the first pick? I still believe it’s offense, but I’m not convinced it’s DeVonta Smith or Kyle Pitts. If we do go WR I think it’s going to be Ja’Marr Chase. If we go OL I think it’s either going to be Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. A lot of you seem to be on the Parson’s train but I don’t think we’re going there. If I were GM, priority #1 would be helping Tua become the QB that can take this team deep into the playoffs. I personally believe that Tua will be a better QB regardless of the players we bring in because he’s a winner and he’s working so hard to be the best he can be, but adding talent around him makes that concept closer to reality. Even if Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson came back to a level close to their previous best, can you count on either of them to finish the season? Both were out all last season and have a lot of catching up to do to get back into football shape. Can DeVante Parker ever have a full season where he’s healthy and basically the same for Will Fuller? Can you lean on Jakeem Grant as a WR and not just an electric return man? Can TE Mike Gesicki really get to the level of a Travis Kelce or Darren Waller? I think he can but that would require him being a much bigger part of the offense, and over his first 3 seasons, he’s yet to eclipse 100 or more targets in a season. Compared to the aforementioned Kelce and Waller, both had 145 targets last season and although both had less targets in 2019, 136 and 117 respectively, each still topped 100 easily. So does that mean TE/WR Kyle Pitts is more likely? If it were me, I’d go WR all the way, we have a really nice TE corps right now with Gesicki, Smythe (who improved last season as a pass catcher), Shaheen, Cethan Carter and Chris Myarick. Smythe is a solid blocker and Shaheen is another big bodied TE that caught 3 TD’s last season. When I look at the WR corps, unfortunately I keep coming up with more questions than answers. Parker, Fuller, Williams, Hurns, Wilson, Bowden, Perry, Grant, and Hollins. Who is the one guy in that bunch that you can count on? Realistically, the answer is none of the above. That’s why my best guess is Chase, and not Smith. I think we need a reliable target, one who has ability but also has availability. I do think that Smith’s size is going to keep him off our roster and the huge consolation prize after Smith who is truly an elite route running WR is Ja’Marr Chase. Mark it down folks, that’s my pick and I believe it will be our pick as well.

Rhino, good call on Chubba though he is similar to what we have in Ahmed. Another good RB who will be there with Chubba later is Kylan Hill though he ran slower than I thought he would.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rhino, there are a couple of late round fliers we can take and possibly a UDFA.

One I like that fits that bill is a small school RB Nate McCrary the 6’0 220 pound running back from Saginaw Valley State had a great pro day at Central Michigan. He ran a 4.37 and a 4.42 forty yard dash. He also added a 36 inch vertical and a 10’5 broad jump. He crushed his 20 yard shuttle with a 4.06 and finished with 19 reps of 225 pounds.

Mike, I’m not sure I want Gesicki getting 100 targets. He’s in a contract year, and we need to spread the ball around.

Last year he got 85 of the 559 passes thrown. Second only to Parker’s 103.

Last year was weird in that we had so many players catch a pass.

I’d hope we were a little healthier

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do if it works. If you get him the ball he’ll most likely come up with it, as long as you put it where he can get it and the defender can’t. He’s a good target, and if our offense clicks with him getting fed, I have no problem with it. If we’re throwing to him a lot, we’re probably getting the ball downfield a bit more, he’s not catching a lot of passes 10 yards or less from the LOS.

18 pass catchers is too many, but it shows we spread it around.

Would like to see Fuller, Parker, Williams and Gesicki about 85 each, about 100 for RBs, that’s 440, then the rest sprinkled in.

If we draft a pass catcher these numbers will need to be adjusted, so that about 350-400 go to this group

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – So besides Preston Williams who had such a small sample of receptions, Gesicki had the highest YPR of everyone else. That’s what I’m talking about! Almost exactly like Kelce too, 13.3 compared to 13.5

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      You got a point there.

If we draft Pitts we can, but don’t have to, pay Gesicki.

I’d still try to pay him, but wouldn’t, if it got into a bidding war.

You could say the same about Chase and Fuller

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krogers closed stores around Los Angeles because the LA council mandated a $5 per hour pay increase for “frontline workers.” This after Krogers had already voluntarily bumped wages by $2 per hour. The mandate made the stores unprofitable. In business you don’t keep doing unprofitable things. This is a result of Angelinos electing starry-eyed idiots who believe socialism works but know nothing about how business runs.

As usual you are flailing about with a fraction of the information.
    —————————————————————————————————-
    TOTALLY FALSE, LOL

as usual, u are assuming something without any facts, im aware of it, just dont happen to suck the corporate off like u do out of blind minion allegiance
ive always been self employed because i dont like billionaires controlling and exploiting Me, does NOT mean that i dont understand how they treat employees
i have hired and fired more employees than You have socks, so i understand what its like to make employee payroll, and be profitable, did it for decades

i never closed down buisnesses because i wanted the employees to work for scraps, but im not greedy ass Kroger either

  14. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

Kroger is not the only company in the world that has had to deal with employees needing or wanting More money, welcome to the crowd. Gesicki will want a huge raise soon also, and hes already making Millions on his old contract.

the problem, to Me, is how Kroger deals with it , close the stores
i have had MANY employees ask for raises, everyone thinks they are worth MUCH more than they probably are.
You either find a way to allow them to earn more money, or make other changes, , You dont close the business down, and leave the community and employees hanging, IMO

    • D's avatar D says:

I don’t have any problems justifying my decision on raises. I don’t give them anything past what they deserve. I mean yeah I do give them other earning potential opportunities but most of them that ask for raises and don’t deserve them aren’t going to do more to make more so it becomes a moot point.

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

agreed, but when does business closure become the priority?

        also,
Grocery store chain Kroger Co., under fire from employees and unions over its plan to scrap its extra $2 per hour in hazard pay this weekend, disclosed that CEO Rodney McMullen was awarded $21.1 million in compensation for 2019. Compare that to a typical worker, who got less than $27,000 in pay and benefits.

$27 K salary in LA? that will afford a tent on skid row, while the CEO gets HUGE Multimillion dollar compensation and a fat house in beverly hills.

so much for the “cant be profitable” if we toss the minions a few more crumbs,,,,,

no tears for the billiionaires in their mansions whining over payroll

Phel, Barmore is a tweener because of his skill set. Yes he is a big dude but he moves like a cat. He for sure is able to play outside as a 3-4 DE and might even be able to play in a 4 man front on the outside as well.

  16. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Personally, I think Pitts is one of the biggest mismatches in the game so he’s top of the list. Chase is very talented and I’d love to have him but Pitts is harder to stop. Did anyone see the FL bowl game without Pitts and Toney? I want as many safety blankets as possible for Tua.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pitts is my first choice as well. Unfortunately am getting the feeling he won’t be there for us. Need some more QBs to go ahead of us.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

If Pitts is gone then Chase will be there. IF Pitts & Chase are gone then Sewell will be there. We will have our choice of an elite player at 6.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gonna be talent at #6 no matter what. Think the boys on the board ain’t gonna be too happy if it is Sewell though. I’ll still be cool, but admit the thought of Pitts gets my juices flowing.

  17. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

i agree that Pitts is an incredible mismatch, will be a nightmare to try to cover that guy

i would love to see him in a Dolphin uniform, he can help the offense score more points

    50: R2 P18 DL Jaylen Twyman – Pitt
    75: R3 P11 RB Javonte Williams – North Carolina
    156: R5 P12 C Jimmy Morrissey – Pitt

Isn’t Tad Fragile an Italian soccer player?

    • D's avatar D says:

No that would be Fake Fragile. Those guys don’t even get clipped and then roll all over the field faking that shit. Had to be the worst WC team about that shit

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The main reason I don’t want Pitts is because we’ve had a talented TE here for 3 seasons and have barely used him. Not because he doesn’t produce, he has, but we just don’t use him enough. So you want to duplicate that by getting another one? Get a guy you can count on for the perimeter and a RB that moves the chains and we won’t really need much more than that.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But scheme would be different on many if not most plays. Would have to be given that both Pitts and Gesicki would be on the field together. At that point different animal.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Possibly, I guess could be like Philly’s offense with Ertz and Goedert. Problem is, it’s almost certainly a pass set because neither really offers much as a blocker, so not your typical 2 TE set.

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

M13, what I don’t like about Ojulari is him playing with his hand in the dirt, he’s much better standing up at OLB.

I still hate his motor on pursuit, but I’m warming up on his pass rush.

He’s now being mocked to us at 18

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We signed Jenkins yesterday and have more than enough down lineman, why are people still mocking DTs to us?

  25. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Mike E,

Good points and Gesicki needed time to learn how to TE as well. He was used though. Gesicki was the 11th highest targeted TE in the NF last year. . In 2019, he was the 6th highest targeted TE.

Our OCs were the TE coach and the RB coach from last year so Gesicki may be targeted a lot more. These guys aren’t truly long-term Gailey advocates and if they had two top end TEs, they may work the system to use the advantages. Flores loves finding mismatches and I’m sure he saw a lot of that in NE.

I don’t think Grier ignores elite talent so if he drafts Pitts (probably not available), Flores will make sure he’s used.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I understand some of that, but guys like Kelce and Waller get the numbers they get because they targeted all the time. If he got as many targets he’d have those kind of numbers. There aren’t many TE’s like Gesicki around the league that have the size, speed and catch radius he has. You’re right though that he had to learn, but I still think even early on they could have used him more as a receiver, like the Giants used Evan Engram

  26. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Real good article Mike E. And miss the combine too. If anything for the confidence in the numbers. As one guy I read pointed out…. there is no penalty for fudging pro day results.

The numbers tell the story. Fuller, 26, averaged 3 yards of separation in 2020, per NFL Next Gen Stats, which would have been by far the best among Dolphins’ starters last season.

The Dolphins’ top three wide receivers, including DeVante Parker (1.7 yards, tied for lowest), Mike Gesicki (2 yards, fourth lowest) and Preston Williams (2.2, tied for 10th lowest), each finished in the bottom 10 of qualified wideouts in average separation last season.

I just can’t comprehend this. I’ve been against this all along as you all know, but now? How can we trade for this guy? Who knows if this kid will ever play again in the NFL? I mean if we give up a 2022 7th RD pick like we gave up a 2021 7th for Isaiah Wilson, OK, but serious draft capital? Why?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Jeremiahs argument is not so bad in1 regard

He’s suggesting the the trades give the Dolphins flexibility to trade for Watson after the draft acquiring future pics

Basically giving time for Watson to resolve his issues

He is suggesting with the 6 pick we still take a weapon….which sounds like the Dolphins wi;; grove Tua another year and if they aren’t ha[pay they have ammo to trade for Watson in 2022

That makes more sense than parting with Tua after a year

      It’s still fucking stupid though

He’s dramatically undermining the shot Watson is in right now

He’s also omitting that we gave a pick in 2022 to move to 6 which would be counter productive

I think these guys are still trying to create trade drama

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yep, I think they want to keep the Watson drama alive although I think Watson himself has enough drama now in his own right. He’s indeed in a mess of shit at the moment. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t believe for a second that any move we just made has a damn thing to do with Watson. I don’t think we’ve been in on him at any moment other than possibly just inquiring about compensation.

The point and only reason I would take Pitts is as a WR. I firmly believe he would be our 1. Then, we can get rid of the other 9….lol.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Draft Pitts, keep Fuller and run only 22 personnel

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But he would be a WR who can also line up on the line as a TE and block at least some. And on any given play Ds wouldn’t know where, including he could slide wide pre-snap. Talk about position flexibility.

  37. D's avatar D says:

Mike, you don’t pick a TE at 6 and not use him. Apparently you can if you take him the second though. I think we wind up using them both in a lot more ways if we do take Pitts. Still you take the best weapon and use it. If the don’t do that for Pitts they probably wouldn’t for any other damn weapon they took there

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Pitts is an offensive weapon, doesn’t matter what position you call him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. All the pundits say you have to put a corner on him because LBs and Safeties can’t cover him. Then you do that and you run against a light defense. He creates mismatches even without the ball in his hands.

good write up Mike, just would like to add that SMith should be on the teams radar if the team wants to replace Grant as a slot receiver /return guy

if small size would keep a WR/return guy off the roster, then Grant would not be there already, obviously, it doesnt
    .
    Grant is smaller than Smith.

    • D's avatar D says:

Grant is a better returner than Smith would be, but he has the dropsies. Smith would not drop the ball as much. Waddle would be the better guy if you wanted to also replace Grant and get a better receiver and return man in the same guy.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not a big fan of having your stud top 10 receiver being your regular returner. Risk of injury part of that and so is just keeping fresh.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the injury concern as a returner is way overblown. Darrell Green, Deion Sanders and Ed Reed returned punts and they were all pro corners. Football players play football. You can’t be afraid of injuries. Guys get hurt playing their position as well.

How many punt returns do most guys get in a game, 5 or 6? That’s not going to tire them out.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ed Reed obviously a Safety but also all pro.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gesicki doesn’t get the ball like Kelce but he has pretty solid numbers the last two seasons. I don’t really get the we don’t use him talk. Our offense has also been a work in progress the last two years. Hopefully we take the next step this year.

  41. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

Stanger, the Dolphins have expected Grant to be the return guy, and get some slot receiver targets as well.
anyone brought in to replace him, would also be expected to perform the same duties

maybe the guy is the teams best WR< so be it, thats not a terribly bad thing to have

    How so? In what way?

  63. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

this is a big part of the problem with this bill, it basically allows elections to be stolen after the fact if the not preferred parties happen to win. its anti constitutional

The new law removes the Georgia secretary of state as the chair of the state elections board. (Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have attacked the current Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, for refusing to accommodate Trump’s baseless claims about the 2020 election.) Instead, the law lets the state legislature — which has been under unified Republican control since 2005 — appoint a “nonpartisan” chair of the board.
And under the new law, if a majority of the five-member board decides that a county’s elections officials have been doing their job poorly, the board can suspend those officials and replace them with one person the board has hand-picked to serve as a temporary superintendent, with the same powers the officials had.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Brah, it’s mandated in the Constitution that state legislatures pass the laws. In this past election, Democrats ran an end-around by the Constitution. Here in PA, they did the EXACT same thing. They actually ‘passed laws’ (un-Constitutionally) at the 11th hour.

Everything you just stated above is BS… it’s a mere talking point of liberals, who are trying to destroy the Constitution.

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

i agree its BS, BUT< its part of the crime bill to suppress voters, and cheat elections if the preferred parties dont win

google up and read the ENTIRE crime bill and whats in it, its much more than voter id, Ken is correct

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

its not a liberal talking point, its the contents of the bill, read all of it

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

  70. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Sorry I started such a shit storm. I never intended to have a debate on the voting restrictions that caused this, although I don’t see the issue, but I really mentioned it because it is sooooo frustrating seeing the hypocrisy of organizations by doing shit like moving this game, yet having no problem with The Braves playing their home games there, while, oh by the way, having a Native American mascot and a war chant!

Just to be clear, I don’t think the voter law is racist, I don’t think the Braves is a racist nickname, and I DO think Atlanta should be able to host the game and honor Hank Aaron.

    • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

YOU wouldnt think the law is racist, the law doesnt effect You
but consider the ones that do feel that way, they have a right to have their voices heard and be represented fairly

agree on the other things about the Braves, but this is really about opposition to the bill, not an effort to sanititize the Braves of any Native American references

  78. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I did a very quick scan to catch up this morning. The only thing I can remember is it is racist to require people to get a valid photo ID cause it makes it harder for minorities to vote????? Last I checked the requirements to get an ID at the DMV were the same for all races.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Are banks racist? Is Airport security racist? They ask for ID. WTF is wrong with asking for proper identification? Like BBM just mentioned, you want to just about anything at the DMV, you need loads of ID.

  79. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Coca Cola is bad for you anyway, the sugar in Coca Cola causes cancer, cancer feeds off sugar. if you have a pet scan to determine if you have cancer they identify it thru injecting sugar in you and the sugar attaches to the cancer cells.

as for Delta, we all know when flying a sudden stop can be hazardous to your health.

    screw Delta and Coca Cola
