Dolphins News and Why I Miss the NFL Combine

“The Underwear Olympics” as some people call it. Regardless of that smear, I feel like the combine has its place, and just like any piece of information, if you’re doing your analysis correctly, it’s another piece of data you use to form your final report, not the only piece. The problem of not having a NFL Combine is the information you get from Pro Days, which are not sanctioned by the NFL, can be slanted, or maybe I should just say ARE slanted. Each college program wants their athletes to succeed because it helps their program succeed. It seems like all the top WR prospects that actually ran at their Pro Day ran sub 4.4 times. It’s not impossible that it’s true, but more than likely those hand held timers (homers) shaved a bit to make that happen. I like when each player is running on the same strip of turf and timed by the same guys and called out if they lean a little too forward or don’t start from the right position. Geez, these guys don’t even wear shirts anymore! Will they be running in jock straps soon, or maybe without them? I suspect that next year we’ll be back to the good ole combine as it was and they will have to wear shorts, shirts and those dreaded heavy numbers on the shirts that most likely easily add a few tenths of a second to all timed events.

Now on to Dolphins news, even if it’s old news. The Dolphins were involved in 2 trades, likely synchronized trades with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. The net result of both trades for the 2021 draft is that the Miami Dolphins will now pick at #6 in RD1 instead of #3, but we have acquired no further compensation in this draft. That compensation doesn’t arrive until 2022 and 2023. We still have picks 6, 18, 36, 50, 81, 156, 231 and 258. Definitely top heavy with two selections in each of the first 2 rounds and no 4th RD selection. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade up or trade back and either lose a pick or gain a pick here and there. The most important thing is finding players that make your team better, no matter when you are selecting. We have flexibility and draft capital to get what we want, so now we hope that we want is on target. The Dolphins have also signed DT John Jenkins to a 1 year contract. Jenkins last played DT/DE for the Dolphins in 2019 and spent 2020 with the Chicago Bears.

Offense or defense? Which side gets the first pick? I still believe it’s offense, but I’m not convinced it’s DeVonta Smith or Kyle Pitts. If we do go WR I think it’s going to be Ja’Marr Chase. If we go OL I think it’s either going to be Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. A lot of you seem to be on the Parson’s train but I don’t think we’re going there. If I were GM, priority #1 would be helping Tua become the QB that can take this team deep into the playoffs. I personally believe that Tua will be a better QB regardless of the players we bring in because he’s a winner and he’s working so hard to be the best he can be, but adding talent around him makes that concept closer to reality. Even if Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson came back to a level close to their previous best, can you count on either of them to finish the season? Both were out all last season and have a lot of catching up to do to get back into football shape. Can DeVante Parker ever have a full season where he’s healthy and basically the same for Will Fuller? Can you lean on Jakeem Grant as a WR and not just an electric return man? Can TE Mike Gesicki really get to the level of a Travis Kelce or Darren Waller? I think he can but that would require him being a much bigger part of the offense, and over his first 3 seasons, he’s yet to eclipse 100 or more targets in a season. Compared to the aforementioned Kelce and Waller, both had 145 targets last season and although both had less targets in 2019, 136 and 117 respectively, each still topped 100 easily. So does that mean TE/WR Kyle Pitts is more likely? If it were me, I’d go WR all the way, we have a really nice TE corps right now with Gesicki, Smythe (who improved last season as a pass catcher), Shaheen, Cethan Carter and Chris Myarick. Smythe is a solid blocker and Shaheen is another big bodied TE that caught 3 TD’s last season. When I look at the WR corps, unfortunately I keep coming up with more questions than answers. Parker, Fuller, Williams, Hurns, Wilson, Bowden, Perry, Grant, and Hollins. Who is the one guy in that bunch that you can count on? Realistically, the answer is none of the above. That’s why my best guess is Chase, and not Smith. I think we need a reliable target, one who has ability but also has availability. I do think that Smith’s size is going to keep him off our roster and the huge consolation prize after Smith who is truly an elite route running WR is Ja’Marr Chase. Mark it down folks, that’s my pick and I believe it will be our pick as well.

It’s easier to vote in GA than it is in Biden’s state of Delaware. Hypocrisy at it’s finest.

GA has made it even easier to vote but harder to cheat. What’s suppressive about that? What’s racist about that? Isn’t this what we want for every state?

OMG, it’s going to be harder for us to cheat. Let’s call this suppressive and racist. SMMFH

STFU Delta! WTF are you bitching about? You require ID and expose us to radiation (I know it is about 1000 times less than a x-ray, it’s still radiation) just to get on your fucking planes. I guess your suppressive and racist also. Fucking hypocrite!

Media, let’s spin the shit out of this so we can deflect from the major crisis on the boarder. Fuckers!

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rob, that was a good video above about Pitts. I am kind of on the Pitts train right now also. I was harping for Smith.

D has been stomping his foot for Pitts for a very long time. Longer than any of us. I now see why and what he would do for our offense.

Parker, Pitts, Gesicki, Fuller on the field at same time most every down would be sick. Red zone, insert Williams for Fuller or go with all 5 and empty backfield.

  4. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

WHO did the Dolphins trade back to 6 for?

im thinking it has to be Pitts, he will be one of the first to come off the board after the initial QB run

there are as many as 6 QB that could possibly go in the top ten, that will push the non QB talent down a notch or two
but i am concerned with the Falcons pick, i think they might want Pitts, leaving us out of the guy that the FIns traded up for

if Pitts makes it past the Falcons, i believe the Fins will take him

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure it was for one specific player. They just felt #6 was a good spot to be in. No guarantee Pitts will make it to us like you said. If we were completely sold on one guy why trade out of #3?

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

maybe to get more picks, not sure

i guess it will become more clear after the draft, i just feel like they wanted someone that was not going to be there at 12, so they traded up, and i feel like the guy might be Pitts

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Did you read how the trade wen down involving all three teams? From the get go, we got the Eagles involved to see if they’d be willing to trade down to #12. So trading back up to #6 was always part of it. They knew when the 49ers traded up, it was for a QB. So if three QBs go top 3, we know we’re getting 1 of the next 3 non QB positions we have high on our board. And yes to acquire more picks including a 1st in 2023.

        1. JAX Trevor Lawrence
        2. NYJ Zach Wilson
        3. SF Mac Jones

Then there is having the draft capital to trade for Watson without depleting our drafts the next few years. But I hope that’s not the case especially with all the shit surrounding Watson. But until that doesn’t happen it still makes me nervous.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Correct it’s not for 1 player.

The dilemma is do you want a certain guy at 3 or do you want 1 of about 6 players at 6, plus a future 1st+

If the trade up to 6 happened while Philly was on the clock…

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’re not trading for Watson. Criminal investigation coming soon, which will put him on the commissioner’s exempt list.

What video should we make today? I don’t know, someone vaguely suggested Brian Flores watched a drill for seldom used Robert Lane at his pro day.

    Ok let’s roll with that.

NFL Rumors Today, Dolphins interested in Lane at 18

  6. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

In my opinion, one of these if not more will be available at 6, i think #6 boils down to these 3 with Smith a long shot for that pick. if we pick there at all.
    1. Pitts
    2, Chase
    3. Sewell

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Waddle, Smith and Parsons would be the other possibles. Anyone else and every mock in the land is blown to hell.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OT Teven Jenkins seems to be in the mix now too.

I liked the mock the guys on NFLN did for us the other day.
        #6 TE Kyle Pitts
        #18 Edge Jaelan Phillips
        #36 Edge Joe Tryon
        #50 RB Javonte Williams

The case made for Tryon is he’s got the strength to move inside on passing downs the way the Giants used Justin Tuck from DE to DT in the same situations.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, logic tells me we’re not trading for Watson. But sometimes teams take a leap and I really don’t think Grier and Flores will do it. But like I’ve said many times about anything in this world, nothing really surprises me anymore.

The Texans might have to part ways with Watson without any trade compensation. They’ll have to flat our release him. The way things are in this country, how could you have him as the face of your franchise if he’s guilty? The MLB All Star game was pulled from Atlanta over a voting law.

  8. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I highly doubt the people that run this country care about morals, To care about morals you first have to have them,
I doubt they will take any venues from Houston if Watson is there.

their objective is to keep that power at any cost.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m actually going to try and make the unpopular case that Smith might be a better fit for us than Chase. Mainly cause Smith is a separation guy while Chase is a physical beast you just chuck it too and let him win it. Sounds a lot like Parker. Think Smith would mesh better with Tua…. and hey they already have in the past.

With that said not sure would take Smith over Chase, but same time if Chase is gone we could do worse than Smith.

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I can’t believe the bullshit conservatives are trying to pull over my eyes.

A 94 page bill has nothing to do with an in person requirement for voter ID.

What size font do you guys think they are using to full 94 pages
to say bring your ID to the polling place?😂😂😂

It did a lot more than that. There’s actually no mention of a requirement to bring an ID to a poll in the bill. But please…go ahead with that strawman bogus argument.

Closing 10% of polling places in a growing population is inexplicable unless you want less people voting. There’s no rationale reason to close voting polls by such a large number

What kind of lines do you think you create by shutting down polling places and forcing people to congregate in the ones that are open?

Oh and how do you make those lines worse: limit mail in voting, early voting and drop boxes.

Where is that going to have the biggest impact?
The obvious answer is in the most populated and urban areas – that usually don’t vote Republicans. They will feel this limitations worse than anyone else bc their is simply more people in their area.

That’s what creating more restrictions on voting does. It causes lines. It’s weird how the same people who want all these restrictions also oppose making Election Day a national holiday…just a concidience I guess….

Who lives in urban areas in the US? I hope the “I don’t see color” crowd chimes in on that one.

Good for baseball. Good for delta. Good for coke.

I’m glad some people still have faith in the value of voting.

When you mess with voting rights. The gloves come off. I hope all those GA republicans that voted for this bill get sued under section 1983. I hope the DOJ has begun to make them feel the consequences of trying to cross that line.

Good luck trying to fight this battle. A lot of people are ready to push back.

It’s a crazy nearly 100 page bill directed and obstructing people from voting

People are upset about an all star game but turn a blind eye to a direct infringement on the foundation of our country

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Oh and don’t bring people food or water In those lines you created. You’ll get arrested for that.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Let me start with I’m all for expanding voting opportunities. Same time it is up to the states to set their voting rules. And yeah in Georgia the GOP controls the state legislature. They want to restrict…. and get the reason why is for political advantage.

Q to me is if there is a fair opportunity to vote. They still have absentee and early voting. When I first voted it was show up the first Tuesday in November or not at all.

So yes know what they are doing but figure they are playing the game within the rules.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They put a ton of restrictions on absentee and early voting too

It’s not fair at all. It’s gives anyone in an urban area more obstructions to vote.

Creating obstructions in voting isn’t playing within the rules. It’s trying to have less people to vote. That’s way below the the belt and a civil rights violation.

It also highlights a real problem with the GA GOP and really the GOP in general the last few years. Instead of expanding their appeal, they are focused on limiting the people who vote.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Completely get they restricted the opportunity to vote. But Q is in were they within their rights to do so with the critical point being can people vote? Leads me back to used to be show up on that Tuesday and all thought that was fair….. least the courts did.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The All Star game thing annoys me. This kind of garbage just keeps piling up and there are those who say “big deal, it’s not such an important thing, is it?” Well, cumulatively, it’s becoming a big deal. I want this bullshit to come to a complete halt

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Why does there have to be so much mail in voting? If it’s so important, go out and vote in person like it always has been!

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Because we have the technology and ability to do so. To make voting more efficient and availability to everyone. Making voting more available to everyone should be the goal. Just because it has always been done one way doesn’t mean we can’t make it better

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

There doesn’t have to be. It’s a convenience measure. Same time been done in a bunch of states for a long time. Up to each state.

  17. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Piggy,

I said IMO it is stupid, you can’t tell me it’s not if that is how I feel.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Of course you have a right to your opinion. But the same goes for MLB. It had the right to do what it did. MLB will deal with the consequences of its decision. Both good and bad

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

How does expressing my opinion turn in to telling you how to think?

I can’t tell you how to think but I can vocally disagree and I will always do that

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

You said that what MLB did was not Stupid, as if that is a statement of fact. I made it clear it was my opinion, you cannot challenge that. Sorry.

        Bookman

I am not going to add “IMO” to everything I post here so people don’t get offended . I don’t think that’s a fair thing to ask.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, what does the voting bill in Georgia have to do with sports, planes and a soft drink? Why is voting so difficult? When did this start and why? The technology is there to end all of this but somehow we still need to use snail mail. Who the fuck wants to stand on line in a warm gym at a school to spend two minutes voting when they don’t have to? Oh that’s right, online could be hacked but there’s no chance a piece of paper could disappear. It’s absurd how this country is behaving on these issues. We’re truly devolving socially due to propaganda.

I watched on FB as people portrayed Trump as Hitler for 4 years. Now I’m seeing Democrats (pick one) portrayed the same way within months of the election. It’s as if nobody knows what Hitler was all about. It’s really fucked up. I think we’re all being played and divided by misinformation and propaganda.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It has nothing to do with those things. Those organizations are standing up for something and I support them for doing it.

It’s not your right to tell people how hard or easy voting should be. No American has that right to begin with. We all have a constitutional right to vote. It’s not a license. It’s not something anyone has permission to give out or obstruct in any manner. It’s a responsibility by our government to make it accessible. Fundamentally creating obstacles is unconstitutional.

If it’s easy for you to vote. Great. But many people faced multiple obstructions and the GA bill is designed to create more in the next election.

No one in this country has any business making it harder for anyone to vote. It’s antithetical to the foundation of this country.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why is it so hard for people to vote? You didn’t address the why? I feel you ignored that I said it should be much easier now due to technology and Ken said the same thing.

People vote in advance in this country before the actual election date with mail in. Why not do that online so the system isn’t so vulnerable on that one day? People do their banking, investments, Social Security, Unemployment, credit cards, utilities etc. online. But voting, no way. It’s absurd. You telling me there is not one person in an older person’s life that isn’t up on technology that can help them do that? Even on the mail in ballot there is an assistance signature that someone signs off on.

If you know who you’re voting for because you’re a party person, you should be able to vote well in advance and that info. is not public. We can send rockets to Mars but we can’t do this. Sorry, not buying it.

  19. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Whether you determine something is “hard” or not is arbitrary

But a bill designed to make voting harder than it already is is unamerican

If the state of GA is trying to create long lines for in person voting that’s a exactly what they are doing.

I would love an online system. Who do you think is opposing that in the Us. Republicans are. I completely agree with your 2nd paragraph. But that’s why I think you are missing the point.

The GA bill limits early voting, limits mail in voting and limits in person voting
. They don’t want anything to do with online voting if they are doing that. They are pushing in the other direction.

I would love to do it online. I’m all for it

But the people claiming voter fraud is rampant are opposed to it. Those are republicans

that’s exactly why it’s an assault on urban areas. A community of 5,000 people will have as many drop boxes as one with 100,000

Not buying that at all. Chase is the best WR in this class. He ran the most impressive routes with quickness and positioning in a physical style. Smith can’t be that physical. ——————-
And I 100% agree with ya, Pig. As our resident DB enthusiast, I can tell ya that it’s rare that we see jams put on a WR in college, but in the SEC, it occurs. Thus, Chase is used to the physicality at the LOS (or within 5 yards), and he’s a proven winner against elite DBs.

Now the same holds true for DeVonta, but unlike Chase, he’s been thriving on the inside where jams aren’t nearly as prevalent. IMO, DeVonta is going to have a bit of a challenge at the next level when EVERYBODY is jamming.

NOT that DeVonta can’t hold his own against a jam what with his exceptional skills, rather Chase is very used to it… as in, BATTLE-tested.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I view DeVonta as an elite version of Davone Bess. We saw Davone on the outside for a year without Brandon Marshall. He was ‘alright’, but not ideal in any way.

The GA bill didn’t restrict early voting, it expanded early voting.

The ban on gifts (water and food) was to stop political campaigning in the voting lines. Polling officials are still allowed to set up water stations.

The bill put more safeguards on mail in ballots to include ID information. Not surprising when the Democratic establishment was calling for people to go to Georgia and vote during the run-offs.

It allows the state to intervene at the county level because corruption is more likely to happen there (the Boss Hog theory).

It eliminates uncontrolled drop boxes and ballot “harvesting.” If you think ballot harvesting is okay, I don’t know what to tell you.

It shortens the run off period, mitigating outside influence.

It allows for processing and counting absentee ballots early instead of having to wait until all voting is down, ensuring a more timely accurate result.

It allows voter’s roles to be reviewed and scrubbed of people who are no longer qualified to vote in GA.

I’m still trying to find the 10% reduction in polling places piece Piggy keeps going on about. I found the precinct/1-hour after closing wait time part. That requires making smaller precincts (which creates more polling places) or providing more equipment and personnel (making lines shorter).

Holy shit…you have to ask for an absentee ballot yourself instead of having your party apparatchik grab it for you. And it has to be mailed to your address. Imagine. The horror.

If you guys think the GA bill makes it too hard for the inner city minority voters to vote, you must also think those same inner city minority voters are too lazy and/or too stupid to overcome the “obstacles” to voting to cast their votes. How…savior-ish of you.

Sugg’s shot was better because his shot was longer then Laettner’s. AND Suggs’ shot was to get to the Championship Game Monday Night; Laettner’s was only to win a regional finals against Kentucky.
    ———————————
I’M SO GLAD I stayed up for this memorable ending!! But, now, Great Grandpa’s REALLY got to walk the Greyhound and get his beauty rest. WHAT A GAME!! The OLD OLFAN IS OUT!!

You didn’t get the the results you wanted

That doesn’t mean there is a problem

I didn’t say it did. I said there was a problem, because we’ve seen video evidence.

You got the result you wanted, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a problem

“i would definitely consider all sides if the other side wasn’t so corrupt.” — that is so beautiful. You aren’t biased cause the other side is.

wrong Stanger, i’m right wing biased because the left is corrupt.

Coke is the worst thing you could ever drink, if you drink enough of it, you will have a short life span,
Coke is the reason for obesity in this country.
the intake of all that sugar shuts your cells down, they cant absorb nutrients because they are full of glycogen.
even though your stomach is full your body is starving.

MF-13, as we talked earlier and you said Smith was not viable @6, i think just the opposite, i think Smith is more realistic than Chase due to the familiarity he would have with Tua.
the chemistry is already there with Smith.

That said i really like Pitts at #6, T.E. is a devalued position or so it has been in the past.

i like the match up issues that will come with trying to cover Pitts

Tomorrow I’ll spend the whole day at Moffitt Cancer Hospital getting checked for any possible return of cancer. They”l go from the top of my head to the bottoms of my feet. At least one of the doctors–or one of their PA’s, will ask me if I have any pains?? I’ll reply “Only when I see a certain someone’s face on TV!”

All I know for real is that my entire family, 3/4 voted for Biden and their votes went through, but my one vote for Trump got kicked back because supposedly my signature didn’t match.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Exactly why I went in person while the wife did it by mail. They do the signature match and might not work. Have had that problem at banks…. even if was there to resolve. Next time around if want to do write-in you can do it real early. In most states they notify (as seems they did with you) and let you correct….. even if that means going in person.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We didn’t have a choice here in NJ which royally pissed me off. I’d wait an hour to get into the supermarket but we couldn’t vote in person. Pure bullshit!

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger, I did vote early and I did fill out the forms to correct, though I never got notified my vote was cast. My point was mine was the only ballot of 4 cast at the same time, and I can tell you this, anyone would be able to see it was my signature, it’s pretty unique

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Totally forgot, and you can ask Dana for verification, she signed my son’s name because he moved out. 🤣

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So sounds like they screwed up. Don’t think it was cause of who you were voting for though. NJ was a sure thing for Biden.

Nah, man. I didn’t say DeVonta wasn’t viable @ R1P6, he just isn’t one of the “Elite 4” that I mentioned. He’s certainly viable @ R1P6 due to his familiarity with Tua, his expert route-running, and his hands… I just feel he’s a tick away from the “Elite 4”, and yes, it’s his frame that concerns me. JMO

I’ll reiterate: if we land DeVonta, I’ll be thrilled! We’re in a win-win situation!

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – not worried, it was a vote for Biden so it doesn’t matter whether it’s legitimate or not. 😂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:
