Dolphins News and Why I Miss the NFL Combine

“The Underwear Olympics” as some people call it. Regardless of that smear, I feel like the combine has its place, and just like any piece of information, if you’re doing your analysis correctly, it’s another piece of data you use to form your final report, not the only piece. The problem of not having a NFL Combine is the information you get from Pro Days, which are not sanctioned by the NFL, can be slanted, or maybe I should just say ARE slanted. Each college program wants their athletes to succeed because it helps their program succeed. It seems like all the top WR prospects that actually ran at their Pro Day ran sub 4.4 times. It’s not impossible that it’s true, but more than likely those hand held timers (homers) shaved a bit to make that happen. I like when each player is running on the same strip of turf and timed by the same guys and called out if they lean a little too forward or don’t start from the right position. Geez, these guys don’t even wear shirts anymore! Will they be running in jock straps soon, or maybe without them? I suspect that next year we’ll be back to the good ole combine as it was and they will have to wear shorts, shirts and those dreaded heavy numbers on the shirts that most likely easily add a few tenths of a second to all timed events.

Now on to Dolphins news, even if it’s old news. The Dolphins were involved in 2 trades, likely synchronized trades with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. The net result of both trades for the 2021 draft is that the Miami Dolphins will now pick at #6 in RD1 instead of #3, but we have acquired no further compensation in this draft. That compensation doesn’t arrive until 2022 and 2023. We still have picks 6, 18, 36, 50, 81, 156, 231 and 258. Definitely top heavy with two selections in each of the first 2 rounds and no 4th RD selection. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade up or trade back and either lose a pick or gain a pick here and there. The most important thing is finding players that make your team better, no matter when you are selecting. We have flexibility and draft capital to get what we want, so now we hope that we want is on target. The Dolphins have also signed DT John Jenkins to a 1 year contract. Jenkins last played DT/DE for the Dolphins in 2019 and spent 2020 with the Chicago Bears.

Offense or defense? Which side gets the first pick? I still believe it’s offense, but I’m not convinced it’s DeVonta Smith or Kyle Pitts. If we do go WR I think it’s going to be Ja’Marr Chase. If we go OL I think it’s either going to be Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. A lot of you seem to be on the Parson’s train but I don’t think we’re going there. If I were GM, priority #1 would be helping Tua become the QB that can take this team deep into the playoffs. I personally believe that Tua will be a better QB regardless of the players we bring in because he’s a winner and he’s working so hard to be the best he can be, but adding talent around him makes that concept closer to reality. Even if Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson came back to a level close to their previous best, can you count on either of them to finish the season? Both were out all last season and have a lot of catching up to do to get back into football shape. Can DeVante Parker ever have a full season where he’s healthy and basically the same for Will Fuller? Can you lean on Jakeem Grant as a WR and not just an electric return man? Can TE Mike Gesicki really get to the level of a Travis Kelce or Darren Waller? I think he can but that would require him being a much bigger part of the offense, and over his first 3 seasons, he’s yet to eclipse 100 or more targets in a season. Compared to the aforementioned Kelce and Waller, both had 145 targets last season and although both had less targets in 2019, 136 and 117 respectively, each still topped 100 easily. So does that mean TE/WR Kyle Pitts is more likely? If it were me, I’d go WR all the way, we have a really nice TE corps right now with Gesicki, Smythe (who improved last season as a pass catcher), Shaheen, Cethan Carter and Chris Myarick. Smythe is a solid blocker and Shaheen is another big bodied TE that caught 3 TD’s last season. When I look at the WR corps, unfortunately I keep coming up with more questions than answers. Parker, Fuller, Williams, Hurns, Wilson, Bowden, Perry, Grant, and Hollins. Who is the one guy in that bunch that you can count on? Realistically, the answer is none of the above. That’s why my best guess is Chase, and not Smith. I think we need a reliable target, one who has ability but also has availability. I do think that Smith’s size is going to keep him off our roster and the huge consolation prize after Smith who is truly an elite route running WR is Ja’Marr Chase. Mark it down folks, that’s my pick and I believe it will be our pick as well.

I think Jaylen Waddle is vastly underrated by most in the media and our fan base. If his ankle is fine (and it probably is), he’s going to be elite in the NFL.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So even if Pitts, Chase, and DeVonta are all off the board when we select (not going to happen!), we’re safe with Waddle. What’s more, we may rank Waddle higher than most… for all we know, he could be WR2 on our board… maybe even WR1, though I doubt it.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think Jaylen Waddle is my ‘dark horse’ candidate for R1P6.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And we trade down a couple/few spots from R1P6, there’s a possibility he’s still there for the taking. Same goes for DeVonta Smith.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think a more likely scenario is that they are just fine with Waddle if they move down to #8 or #9, but could very well be that Waddle is actually the wideout they’d had their eyes on all along.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not sure between Waddle and Smith. I won’t be surprised if Smith has a great NFL career

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What I like about Smith is seems he has a better game. And when you are 170 pounds you need to develop that instead of just blowing the competition away with your beastliness. Whatever he did in college along those lines should translate well to the NFL.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Waddle is going to be a real good player in the NFL. He’s a WR, he can run jet sweeps and returns. Explosive player.

  6. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order Friday prohibiting businesses from requiring customers to show proof they have received COVID vaccines and preventing the state government from issuing so-called “vaccine passports.”
    ————–
So in a public health crisis my governor wants to stop people from proving they have been vaccinated and businesses from setting up different protocols for those who have been. Your choice not to get vaccinated. Shouldn’t mean your options are the same.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Why shouldn’t I have the same options? I choose not to get it right now and maybe never. I will raise hell if a business decides to discriminate against me. If I get it, it’s my fault.

Getting the COVID shot does not make you “immune” to getting COVID. It helps your body build up the antibodies to fight it better if you get it. Basically, it puts you ahead of the game. That goes with many immunizations.

I don’t know why people think once they get the shot they have this total immunity. It don’t work like that. You get the flu shot to help you fight the current strain for that year but you are not immune from it. You can still catch the flu.

That is why vaccine passports are bullshit.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        BBM,

100% agreed. And now, the gov (Fauci) is talking about the new strains/mutations. When will this BS ever end? And what ever happened to the flu?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

BBM — people who have been vaccinated have less chance of getting Covid. From a public health perspective that has to come into play. Say I just got a Covid positive test….. should I be mixed in with everyone else? Protocols now says quarantine. Obviously that’s extreme, but mixing vaccinated people closer together than others is not.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If someone who has COVID coughs in someone’s face who got the COVID shot who then passes by another who had not received a COVID shot and coughs is their face, they can still pass it on to that 3rd person. BUT, we are to have different protocols. SMH

That sounds very totalitarian to me, Stanger. Like Pig, I’m not going to call anybody a Nazi… but damn, what you just said above is approaching the danger zone as it pertains to freedom.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Totalitarian? It is just common sense. Some teams are already setting up vaccinated only sections and cruise lines cruises for vaccinate people only.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

*in my Bernie Mac voice*: Dammit, y’all! I don’t want to be talking about politics in here today, on an Easter Sunday! Let’s try to along on this Sunday, you sum-um-um bitches! Why y’all got to trap me in your BS!

    LOL! 😀 😉

  10. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I think it is a slippery slope to issue vaccine passports and for business to ask to see them so they can set up different protocols.

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

When will this BS ever end?
    ——————————————————
I don’t know. It probably depends on how much stock Fauci and others own in big pharma companies making the vaccine. Once they get to about 200 mil people vaccinated you will start hearing reports that you need to get a booster shot or a new vaccine for a mutated strain just like the flu shot every year. By then, you or your insurance will probably have to pay for it.

  12. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What is the difference btwn airlines (and the US gov) requiring Covid negative tests before flying and a Chili’s having a vaccine only section where they don’t do every other table?

  13. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Stanger,

What is more important to you, seriously: an EDGE or a RB?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I ask because that is what’s likely to happen with our R1P18 selection. Personally, I can’t make my mind up!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Today (and today ONLY!), I’m thinking Parsons @ R1P6 (that addresses our EDGE), and Najee Harris @ R1P18 (that addresses another receiver position, while obtaining a great POWER rusher).

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

How does that address a receiver option with Najee? He’s an excellent route-runner, has great hands, and is dynamic out of the backfield.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll jump in. Edge is more important but depends on value. I think we’ll come away with one at some point and a RB. It’s not like we don’t have some solid RBs. But we really need another LB/Edge player.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Edge. RB in the 2nd or a trade up to the late 1st.

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Say I just got a Covid positive test….. should I be mixed in with everyone else?
    —————————–
Hell no! Stay your ass at home! lol

We are not talking about people who test positive. We are talking about those who don’t have COVID and have got the shot vs. those who don’t have COVID and have not got the shot. Should not matter and should be treated the same. Otherwise, govt. is forcing those who choose not to get it to have to get it against their wishes and in some cases against their religious beliefs.

    Refer to what M13 said.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Understand that was an extreme example, but brought up to point out you can take measures to fight Covid.

Let’s look at it another way. If I own a bed & breakfast (live there) and only want guests who have been vaccinated….. should the government insist otherwise?

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

        Nope!
But you shouldn’t have to bake a cake for someone you don’t want to either!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The government should have ZERO say. Allow private businesses to operate as they wish, whether it’s pro-COVID or anti-COVID. It’s not that difficult. We’re not talking about something akin to the Great (bubonic) Plague. It’s the flu, for crying out loud.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wyoming — completely agree. What happened at that bakery was not a time to go to court. Might be a legit time for “cancel culture” though.

Agreed, but for that we have some solid RBs. I mean, they’re alright, but I wouldn’t call them solid. JMO

I want to come away with an ELITE RB, Tim. It’s been far too long. Again, JMO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d like a big time RB as well but I think Gaskin and Ahmed played pretty damn well for us. I also happen to like Brown. Whatever happens we need to add at least one nice offensive weapon. But pass rush is still a must for us.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another thing, I truly believe I had a small bout with it last Nov. Symptoms only last 2 days though I self quarantined for 2 weeks. I should already have antibodies to fight off future exposures/infects so I should not have to get one right now or for a while.

I have the same antibodies as someone who got the shot but I should be discriminated against for not getting the shot.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Bro, I KNOW I had it in December of ’19. I was ill for about 2 weeks, battled through it, and only missed 3 hours of work at my regular job. My whole fam got infected with the same results.

Now then… most of you libs will find this to be astonishing… I don’t believe this virus was hatched from the Wuhan lab in question, or at least as the story goes. In fact, we’ve found that Italy had exposure to the virus in July of ’19.

      Curious, is it not?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

NO! YOU DON’T! You and I get to wear a mask for the rest of our lives… according to these so-called ‘experts’ like Fauci.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We also see that teams find good RBs outside the 1st and 2nd rounds. If you can block it you can run. Maybe you don’t get spectacular plays, but solid yardage helps the passing game and the defense. We’ve watched the Pats do it for years and it wasn’t just because of Brady. The Pats could always block their plays.

I’m excited to see who we draft. This draft is huge for us to take the next step.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I own a bed & breakfast (live there) and only want guests who have been vaccinated
    ————————————-
That’s what I was trying to point out earlier.

You have a guest coming to your B&B who got the COVID shot. His Uber driver has COVID and been hacking all day in the vehicle. He congregates with other guests spreading COVID germs he just got from his Uber driver. The next day the couple he had drinks with at your B&B, the dudes wife can’t taste anything and is feeling like shit but she got the shot. She got COVID but next day she feels great. She had the antibodies to fight it off much faster from the shot. Getting the shot does not make you 100% immune from getting the disease or passing it on to others.

Another thing to point out is that just because you got the shot does not mean it worked, meaning gave you the antibodies to fight COVID. It is rare but does happen. It happens more frequently when you are receiving a multi shot vaccination like HEP B.

Being in health care I was vaccinated for HEP A and HEP B. Two years down the road I had blood work done and found out I was not vaccinated against HEP B. The vaccine didn’t “take”. My body did not develop the antibodies it was supposed to. I had to get revaccinated.

Just because you got the shot does not mean you developed the antibodies to fight it without actually getting a blood test done.

Getting the same less likely to get Covid card as those who have been vaccinated. Explain it?
    ————-
Again, this is NOT the Bubonic plague. I don’t understand why we suddenly became deathly afraid of the flu. COVID is the flu, albeit a slightly more aggressive strain than usual. This happens regularly in cycles and is nothing out of the ordinary.

What you fail to realize is that the CDC and WHO have been counting non-COVID deaths as COVID deaths.

Look at it like this… I’ve had COVID and recovered, just like any other flu… thus, it’s been in me and it can be medically verified that I had it, postmortem. IT didn’t kill me! But that one time I tried to fight Mike Tyson in the ring, he KILLED ME!

Well, it would have been counted as a COVID death under the CDC and WHO rules, being COVID had been in my system once upon a time… never mind that it wasn’t my cause of death, it was my ill decision to fight Mike Tyson!

What I was getting at in my last post about COVID is, how many millions of people got the 2 shot series but did not stick to the proper interval between shots? Whether it was due to unforeseen circumstances and/or unavailability. That is the main cause for a multi dose vaccine not to “take”.

How many did not build proper immunity or no immunity at all due to that?

But they should get a vaccine passport and I should be discriminated against though I may have better immunity than them.

No one would really know unless we all get an antibody test.

On COVID-19, I definitely think the numbers are inflated, but I have no idea by how much, probably a smaller percentage than even the hardest core disbeliever thinks. They seemed to go out of their way to link COVID into deaths whether it was the main cause or not, but I suppose they have the right to do that since it was present. I do believe the Government likes to control their citizens, and the fact that cities and states run by the left are much stricter in their enforcement of COVID safety measures and penalties and the like proves that out. In the Tri-State area, we’re at the mercy of Emperor Cuomo, who wags his finger and his Democratic cronies in NJ and CT (Murphy and Lamont) jump like trained dogs. For the record, the recruits participated voluntarily. We did nothing without their knowledge.

That was back in 95′-97′. I haven’t killed off all those brain cells yet and still remember some things from back then.

I believe there are facts and tidbits Fauci and CDC are not putting out about vaccine effectiveness in relation to creating proper antibodies. They don’t need to either as it would be counter productive and may deter people from getting it. You need to get as many vaccinated as possible to squash the disease. See squashed diseases from years past.

We have the results put out from the pharma companies themselves. They say 75% effective, 94% effective, 96% effective, etc. Ok, take the 94% effective, what about the other 6% not effective? That’s 60,000 people out of every 1,000,000 where the vaccine didn’t do it’s thing

So 60,000 people where the vaccine was not effective out of every 1,000,000 get to go in the club with their vaccine passport while I have try and sneak in the back door only to get my ass kicked by bouncers while I yell at the people in line, “Those are six percenters! Those are six percenters!”. Then I go to jail for disturbing the peace and stuck in a holding cell with a dozen other poor fuckers who DON’T have a vaccine passport either. I guess that will be the only place you will be able to get into without one. lol

I just choose not to get one now and don’t feel I should be discriminated against for that decision.

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

One team the Chicago Bears could find success trading with is the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins are, quite frankly, on the upswing while the Bears continue to stand still. Miami looks as though they are standing behind second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and are ready to surround him with talent in order to make a playoff run this coming season.

The Bears, meanwhile, still lack an identity at the position.

Miami has done a nice job over the last year or so in acquiring plenty of draft capital while also attempting to solidify the most important position in football. With their current capital, there are several scenarios that could arise in which the Bears try to land one of their picks in this year’s draft.

Just how would Chicago go about it? A couple of different possibilities come to mind.

    Interesting tidbit

    based upon 2000 – 2016 – 17 drafts

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I posted that crap last week. Crabbs has an article out that uses it as a reference, saying we should be weary of a WR at 6.

This article is a good example of why I hate most stats, it lacks a reason why WRs don’t stay with their drafted team. Are they too expensive, or what?

Pretty sure our FO isn’t worried about it, just like they weren’t last year at QB

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So few centers are taken in RD 1, maybe that’s why the hit percentage is much higher. Every other position is pretty well represented in RD 1 though, which makes their hit percentage lower.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That and their 2nd contracts don’t break the bank.

In other words any C taken in round 1 whether they are great or just average us good enough

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s only been 8 taken since 2000, including the 2 Pouncey’s, and none since 2013, when Dallas took Fredrick, so yeah that stat is kind of weak

  55. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Right now it appears Chase and Pitts are the front runners at 6, but that’s in the eyes of the media.

I’m pretty sure that’s not what our FO is thinking, I’d bet they have a trade to 8 or 9 on their minds.

If both Chase and Pitts are gone, no reason for me to stay at 6, with QB 4 and maybe QB still on the board.

Sure would be nice to trade with Detroit and get that 1st pick in the 2022 draft😉

  56. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Only 24 days left to wait until we are on the clock!

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This is why I believe KVN and Lawson are gone.

The Dolphins’ pass rush was the fourth-slowest in the league last season to gain 5-yards of depth after the snap. Could some of that be by design based on contain rushes and Miami’s general strategy of how to attack the pocket? Surely. And that likely may be the case. But regardless what the context of Miami’s shortcomings are in rushing the passer, the team needs more explosiveness off the edge even if the Dolphins aren’t aggressively attacking the pocket by design.

And why I think, if we do go Edge at 18 it may be someone like Phillips.

“(Phillips’) burst from the line of scrimmage to 5 yards traveled after the snap was third-best in the FBS last season, and the Dolphins’ front had the fourth-slowest burst in the league,” wrote Frelund.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think with the scheme we can accomplish the same passrush as last year with the guys we have currently, and maybe better with McKinney, and AVG used more.

Phillips is quicker and more position flexible, than Rousseau. I think Rousseau would get more sacks, but less pressures or quick pressures

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jenkins contract, but he only made 1.1m last year, so I expect similar and to only take about another 300k off of the cap.

We should see some extra cap space once McKinney gets reworked, then once our WR room is figured out right before the season starts.

Rumor has it that instead of a 4th preseason game their will be a week off.

During that week we’ll surely be trying to trade off guys like Grant, Wilson, Hurns and maybe other WRs, with a return like a 7th

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I like Phillips but am very very hesitant of drafting him. He has had MAJOR concussion issues to the point he retired from football and left UCLA. Went back to school at UM pursuing music then ended up coming back to football. Some say he is one more concussion from being out of football for good. Shame cause he is a hell of a talent. Article:

    EDGE DEFENDERS – Verdict: Worse
    LINEBACKER – Verdict: Clearly better
    SECONDARY – Verdict: Better

I left out the list of off-season moves and his summary of how he came to the opinions above but you can read them in the link I copied.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I read it and I agree, but once we get an Edge/OLB in the draft we might be better off at Edge.

Addition by subtraction with Van Noy and Lawson, because we need a speed upgrade, and the things KVN and Lawson did well should be replaced by run support of McKinney and Jenkins.

We may already be better off without KVN, by giving AVG more reps.

The secondary you could say will be worse or the same, just based on X not getting 10 ints in 2021.

      Mostly I agree though

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is in response to that Chicago trade that was mentioned above.

How many picks do we need to acquire? The idea is to turn them into players who help you win games, not just keep collecting them.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

ahhhh but IF you can do both then you are golden. Seldom does history prove out that #8 pick is ALWAYS better than #15 or even #20 pick. More chances give you, well more chances to succeed.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But we’ve done that. We have five 1st round picks the next three drafts. Time to start turning them into players.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree, we really need to get a top WR or Pitts, so we can evaluate Tua properly, otherwise we’re just spinning our wheels.

You could say, if the comp is great and much better than that proposed garbage, that we could then trade back to around 12

  62. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think it sucks that there is no clear “top” pass rusher / Edge guy in this year’s draft. I will argue that pass rusher is a bigger need for the Dolphins than Receiver is. It would be much simpler if we could just take the best edge guy knowing he won’t be a bust at 6 but all the big boards I see seem to say that Rousseau is the best prospect and I think he has too much bust factor in him as a one year wonder.

I hate the idea of taking the “best” receiver when I don’t think that is our biggest need. I would take Pitts at 6 but think between Atlanta and the Bungles one will take him at 4 or 5. Sewell would be a good consolation prize but do we need another 1st round tackle?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It may be our biggest need, but not our biggest issue.

We’ve got Fuller on a 1 year contract, so can’t really depend on him past this year, so that top receiver will help decide, if Tua is the answer

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Blocking overall is also going to be a big part of Tua’s growth. Both he and Fitz struggled when protection broke down and our run game was up and down. If that can be more consistent I think we’ll see a much better offense even with what we have already. But adding some upgrades at the skill positions would really help.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Tua struggled, when we had no receivers.

He looked really good, when both Williams and Parker played, so to me it’s the bigger issue.

Tua can get the quick hitting passing game going, if we draft Pitts, Chase or Smith

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s true too, but our young OL needs to take the next step as well. It’s not easy to get three rookies on the same page all the time. Hopefully their chemistry and play improves this season.

  66. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Interesting thing learned today: Benardrick McKinney can play both inside and outside LB. And we signed Roberts back. Still leaves a need for a LB/edge, but not as pressing of one. Could take care of in the 2nd instead of #18.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he played all around as most teams do this these days. We consider Baker an ILB but he plays on the edge too, blitzes and drops. We use that “Amoeba” defense with one down lineman or none with 6 or 7 guys roaming around before the snap. McKinney will be a part of that too.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Both McKinney and Baker are good blitzers, putting either on the outside should get the job done, and reduce the need for Parsons.

Add AVG, Biegel and Roberts to the LBS, that are effective blitzers

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are likely LBs Grier and Flores like that are not being talked about. Still think we need a legit edge guy even if he’s a bit green and needs to work on his game. Meaning a guy who has that prototype size 6-3 or 6-4 250-260. Even if he’s a one trick pony early on. That player might be available 2nd or 3rd round.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Brennan Scarlett 6’4″ 260

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Who can play OLB in the edge position to stop the run and set the edge on first down, besides McKinney?

Belicheat looks like a D genius, because he always has lots of LBS that play multiple as well, making his job easier.

    Flores is no different

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Van Ginkel and Biegel. Before his injury, Biegel was progressing on the Edge but lost an entire season because he tore his Achilles in the offseason. We also signed Edge Brennan Scarlett from Houston but he’s more of a rotational depth player. We need to add another one in the draft to up the competition.

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

In a normal “non-covid” world wouldn’t we have already had some OTA’s and stuff? Don’t some of them usually happen before the draft in March? I wonder if the league is going to have a virtual offseason again. Bruce Arians of the Bucks thinks the Union (which is run by Veterans) is against having off season workouts because it helps the younger, cheaper guys get on more even playing field with the more experienced vets thus making it harder for the younger cheaper guys to replace the older more expensive guys.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

      So what did you get?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Van Ginkel is progressing nicely.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He is too weak at setting the edge but good pass rusher though

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Biegel 6’3 246, a little small, but he could work in with Scarlett

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think he improved quite a bit since his rookie season. He was noticeably bigger and stronger last year. But he’s still a OLB not a DE so he’s not going to be able to take on tackles and pulling guards on a regular basis in the run game. That’s why I said earlier we need a bigger Edge guy added to the mix.

The Edge class this year has no elite, but there are a lot of them. Need to land one of the better ones.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

“Edge rusher” is a concept, not a position. It refers to pass rushers who attack the quarterback from one end of the offensive line or the other. … Loosely, in a 4–3 (which means, 4 linemen and 3 linebackers), the edge rushers are the defensive ends.

We run mostly 3 downlineman, so this definition really doesn’t apply.

Players considered to be edge rushers are usually 4–3 defensive ends or 3–4 outside linebackers. … One reason the word “edge” is used in the term “edge rusher” is that edge often refers to the area outside of offensive tackles, but within a couple of yards of the line of scrimmage.

This one applies as an OLB.

Not sure what you’re talking about Tim

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That is not much at all. 3rd, 5th and 6th if you discount for years. No doubt what the Jets take now though.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What sucks is that the Panthers don’t need to trade up for a QB now.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

They don’t need but doesn’t mean they won’ t. Darnold got picked out of the bargain bin.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not that though. It will be a 2nd and 4th in 2022, not a 3rd and 5th. That way of looking at it makes no sense to me.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Why did the Pats (and other teams) regularly trade a 2nd for a first the next year? Talking value right now.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well there you have it. The Jets are drafting a QB. LOL

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, I think that’s why we bulked up our DL this offseason with Butler and Jenkins. To help our LBs close on plays.

Even though we don’t really play a “standard” 3-4 or 4-3 system, we are building more like a 3-4 base.

  75. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Is Darnold a step up from Bridgewater? I don’t think so. I think Carolina still going QB

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But not necessarily in a trade up. Might be waiting for one of the top 5 QBs to drop to them and develop.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

At #8? I doubt it. They’re obviously not that high on Bridgewater.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Darnold’s rookie contract runs out in another season. Are they really going to invest big money in him. In Bridgewater you have a steady but not spectacular QB. I think in either scenario the Panthers need to draft a QB

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, how does a 2nd and a 4th become a 3rd and 5th the following year? The only way is to assume the 2022 draft will be shit. What if it’s one of the deepest drafts in history?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Stanger is correct a 2nd and a 4th in 2022 is equivalent to a 3rd and 5th this year

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t buy into that at all because it makes no sense. Nobody has been able to explain this reasoning and we’ve been discussing it for years. Why is next year less valuable?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I don’t remember the Pats regularly trading a 2nd for a 1st the next season. But I do remember Jimmy Johnson traded a 1st the following year to Carolina for a 2nd in the current draft to select Patrick Surtain but that’s because he had a 1st round grade on Surtain and he really liked the player. So was our 1st really a 2nd for Carolina? How does that make any sense?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It doesn’t. Talking present trade value when folks are making the deals. A 3rd in 2021 is worth more than a 3rd in 2022 and so on. To take it way out there…. what value would you put on a 3rd round pick in 2028? I’m not making this stuff up.

But yeah if folks though this year’s draft a shit show and the next the best in NFL history they would adjust the values.

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Stanger is right, that ain’t shit to give up, like 3rd rd pick 75

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What round will the Jets be using that 2nd and 4th in next year? There are only 64 picks in the 1st two rounds. How does that equate to 75?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I posted last week how the teams consider future round picks, it was something I hadn’t seen before.

        A 2022 2nd is equivalent to pick 18 in round 3 2021, so 180pts.

        2022 4th is equivalent to pick 18 in round 5 2021, so 25pts.

2021 6th 12 pts, totaling 217 pts or equivalent to pick 75 this year, which is worth 215pts

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So why do teams keep making trades like this? It still makes no sense to me. Just because it’s a year down the road? The pick is still what it is and nobody knows what the next draft class is yet – better or worse. Maybe if the Panthers go to the Super Bowl it’s more of a 3rd or 5th because it’s at the end of the round and in the 4th comp picks come into play, but that also means they had a great season.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s just a gadget to used for fair trades, the more motivated one team is the more they can expect to give up, and when a drafting QB is the result expect more

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Lots of coaches on the hot seat Tim willing to mortgage the team’s future to keep their job or make that run for the ring. Not all of them but enough to make the standard trade evaluations what they are. Familiar with the Tunsil trade. 🙂

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Jets moved up three spots to No. 3, while sending the No. 6 overall pick, two second-round choices this year (Nos. 37 and 49) and their second-rounder in 2019 to the Colts.

Darnold should now be considered a huge mistake, costing them the #6 pick plus 2 2nds. The next year 2nd is a wash with what they got back from the Panthers

  79. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

so much for trade back ideas with Carolina. The only other team that could possibly move up is Denver (I doubt we’d deal with NE if they inquired, but who knows).
Looking like we are locked in at #6

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, just heard them say on NFLN that Carolina may move Bridgewater now. So maybe they do draft a QB at some point but you don’t trade three picks for a player you’re not high on. I doubt Carolina drafts a QB at #8. In fact I think they might trade down for more picks.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I could see them trading down, but they really gave up very little to take a look at Darnold.

I like SC, so I hated to see him go to the jets, with that said, it’s still hard to root for him with the green slime stained on him, even though I would like to see the Panthers stick it to them

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Expect the Panthers to give Darnold the 5th year option and take a two year look at him. He’ll only be 24 in June. Darnold has talent but the Jets did a pretty bad job building around him.

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This would be a monkey wrench of sorts. The Jaguars take Zach Wilson and Trevor Lawrence is there for the Jets. I’ve heard a lot of draft pundits say they like Wilson over Lawrence. But we know QBs are going top 3. Unless SF is blowing smoke up our asses and take a tackle and roll with Jimmy G.

It’s just a gadget to used for fair trades, the more motivated one team is the more they can expect to give up, and when a drafting QB is the result expect more

But the Jets didn’t give up anything to draft a QB. They’re still at #2 and acquired more picks by trading Darnold. They’ve hit the reset button and are following what we’ve done the last two years. They’ve got a boatload of picks the next two years.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gee Adam Gase, wherever you go as HC, after 3 years you force franchises to make trades for draft picks and hit the reset button. That’s quite the legacy. LOL

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know everyone is saying Lawrence #1 to Jags. Now a little rumble of Wilson to Jags. I know many on here say Fields sucks and is just another OSU system QB. I actually think Fields is a special talent.

Who is the new coach of the Jags? I think any of the top 3, Lawrence, Wilson or Fields could go to #1 overall.

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Did Charley Casserly just say Carolina tried to trade for Tua saying his last name wrong? LOL

  86. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Any pundits talking about Wilson over Lawrence to Jags are pundits looking to get their names to go viral. Lawrence has been a man among boys in high school and college. QB’d a national championship team as a freshmen… he is currently only 21 yrs old!! One Pro Day where everything is orchestrated isn’t enough to move him ahead of Lawrence’s game tape. For that matter, I thing Fields is a better QB as well… he’s just getting dinged because Haskins farted and left the room, and people think it might have been Fields.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

DL, Edge and LB is not an elite class this year. I would not be surprised if we take Micah Parsons who I think is the best defensive player in this draft at #6. Everyone will say the Dolphins didn’t give Tua that spectacular weapon on offense like no good offensive players are left.

I think Parsons takes our defense to another level. Pitts and Chase are the guys on offense. There are plenty of other good offensive players. I think offense is deeper than defense this year. Take the best defensive player before it thins out. We have plenty of top picks.

  88. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think the first 4 picks will be QBs, i heard ATL came out and said they will be taking a QB, tat leaves us with the 2nd overall non qb pick.

  89. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Oh god intelligible.

Agreed with TK about Parsons. I think he could take our defense to the next level better than any other draft option at D.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      It’s a need!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes Krishna, we created a “hole” with releasing Van Noy and trading Lawson. LOL

But maybe that’s part of the plan. To add faster to the position. We’ve got the draft capital to do that.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And that’s why our team is incomplete. Upgrading depth is not filling holes. Subtraction by addition (someone said) is a way to fill holes. If it takes two to get you what’s “best” is it really when you only need one. That’s a fucking hole in my book…lol. Sorry.

WR is a hole, RB by committee is a hole, OL could be filled with better and cheaper talent.

        Another stout DL/edge/whatever is needed.

  90. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Wilson is better than Lawrence, the Jags suck at picking QBs almost as bad as we do.

  91. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Urban Meyer is the new coach of the Jags. I’m sure he will pick the QB.

  92. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

can Robert Hunt hold down RT, how about Jackson at LT?
Sewell is a stud and will fit very nicely on that OL.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sewell is an option too. But Jackson, Hunt and Kindley have to get better. They were all major draft investments last year – 1st, 2nd and 4th respectively.

We’re such a young team, not sure we fans know what to think. But 5-11 to 10-6 was a nice jump under the new two year regime.

  93. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I just saw that Paye killed his pro day and dropped down to 260. I’m afraid he’ll get overdrafted, but I’m starting to really like this kid.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not sure I understand why he’s so unpopular here

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we drafted him. Not sure when, not at #6, but arm chair GMs say not a good pick. Flores likes his team to be versatile and I think we miss that point as fans.

The bottom line is he wants us to play better on offense, defense and STs. Duh! But he has his vision and we have ours. LOL

  94. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
For me, he looked kinda slow and stiff playing. The more I watch him; the more I wonder if it’s more about him being more of a technician. I actually like the way he plays. He’s a powerful kid who plays hard, and he plays smart. He has a lot to like, but I just don’t think he’s a top #18 guy. That’s just me.
    ***
He’s also kind of a tweener who is probably viewed as a 4-3 DE. I don’t know if that really means anything in our defense, but ya never know. He played at around 270-75. He was 260 at his pro day, and I believe he said he did it on purpose.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Finally, someone gets it. Forget about Paye(s) of schit, he doesn’t fit, we don’t need a 4-3 DE, that’s why Lawson and KVN are gone, tweeners in our D.

I bet we take Owen, maybe even after a trade to the 20s

  95. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with Rhino on Lawrence.

Chris Simms is so stupid, that he doesn’t even know what he said, but revealed his motivation behind why he says Wilson is the better QB.

He said he wants to be a GM, then he says, why Wilson is better.

He’s the first guy that said Wilson should go #1.

If Wilson ends up being better, which will never happen, then he believes he’ll get GM calls

  96. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Talking defense: Ive been having a hard time figuring out what I think they’ll do in the draft because I’m still not really sure what they value or emphasize quite yet. I really feel their FA moves thus far have been about shoring up the run defense. But, they continue to sign guys who offer flexibility. Mckinney and Butler both have versatility. I don’t think either of them are gonna be real impactful in the passing game, but they give you some options. Jenkins is what he is…a run stuffer. Does that mean we see them continue that trend or do those signings free them up to go a different direction?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Parsons adds a player that is hard to block. I’ve said he’s a Lawrence Taylor type of prospect coming out of college but that’s also blasphemy. I’ve been saying this for months and if he ends up on another team I feel the same way. I think he’s going to be one of those perennial pro bowl/all pro type LBs.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The problem with Parsons is he takes himself out of plays the way Kiko did, but on the outside I see that as less of a problem.

He’s also a tweener to us in that he’ll likely go between our picks, but if he’s there at 18 all in

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

He’s young steveccnv. Don’t you think he can improve or do expect perfection out of the gate. Just a question.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Of course he can improve

Just pointing out a negative, they all have something.

I think he’s out of position playing inside.

I did say I’m all in at 18

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Fair enough. They all have warts.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Trevor Lawrence is the best QB in this draft. The question is who will end up being the best in the pros? Nobody knows that. Lawrence looks like he could be an all pro sort of player. People are getting far too excited about Wilson’s pro day. Happens all the time with the combine too. The media loves when they can hype QBs. It gets fans interested more than anything else.
    ***
I could care less….or couldn’t care less because neither are coming to our team….so screw ‘em. Lol
