What will the 2021 Miami Dolphins Defense look like?

Two of our top 4 picks in the 2021 draft were spent on defense. The #18 pick to me was the pivotal pick because I think adding Jaelan Phillips to this defense will energize a pass rush that improved last year with the addition of Emmanuel Ogbah who led the team, and also the emergence of “AVG” Andrew Van Ginkel who really came on last season. Keep in mind Emmanuel Ogbah had 8 sacks through 9 games last season and finished with 9, so 1 sack in the last 7 games. There’s a reason, opposing teams focused on Ogbah because Shaq Lawson wasn’t getting it done. So now we have the young pass rusher we need and in exchange for Shaq Lawson, we received ILB Benardrick McKinney. Don’t underestimate this move. As much as I believe drafting Phillips was so important to our defense, I think trading for Benardrick McKinney was a big step too, though not as much as getting Phillips. Consider that Elandon Roberts is rehabbing from a knee injury very late in the season (Game 16), we needed this. In addition, McKinney will be the perfect inside backer that will continue to allow #55 to be all over the field and we’ll now have a guy who can be productive against the run and can also chase down plays to the sidelines. In round 2 pick #36, the Dolphins took who they believe to be the starting FS opposite SS Eric Rowe, Jevon Holland. Holland will be given every opportunity to win that job as good ole Bobby McCain was let go.

I think our defense already had a very promising trajectory, even before the Lawson/McKinney trade and before the draft. I like our young, strong defensive line with DE’s Christian Wilkins and Emmanuel Ogbah and NT Raekwon Davis. Ogbah is the elder statesman at nearly 28 while Wilkins is nearly 26 and Davis is only 24. AVG will be 26 at season’s start and Jaelan Phillips is 22. These guys are just going to get better, and make no mistake, Jaelan Phillips is going to make this defense better. He will be a guy that must be accounted for and when there are multiple guys on your defense that fit in that category, that’s when defenses feast. I think Phillips is going to have that impact on our defense. If AVG can improve on the good work he did last year, our defense can be a real force. He played in only 46% of the defensive snaps and managed 5.5 sacks and 10 QB hits in addition to nearly 50 tackles. If he can earn more playing time and increase his production accordingly, watch out!

The secondary was already the premier unit of the defense and hopefully Jevon Holland can elevate it even further. Last season Bobby McCain played SS and played the majority of snaps there. This year Rowe will be playing SS and it’s expected that rookie Jevon Holland will play FS. Holland may also play some slot corner and nickel corner, a job Nik Needham handled most of the time last season. With two excellent cover corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones, this may be the best CB tandem in the NFL. Howard is the ballhawk and playmaker while Jones is your typical shutdown corner. Howard started and played in all 16 games finishing with an incredible 10 INT’s. Jones started and played 14 games last season and totaled just 2 INT’s, but as I said earlier, he does a great job of shutting down the receiver he is responsible for.

I honestly can’t wait to see this defense on the field. If Phillips lives up to the hype I’m bestowing on him this defense can be something to see. We so desperately need that player that opposing teams must pay extra special attention to and I can’t remember the last time we’ve had that. For some perspective, last season was the first season in which we accumulated more sacks on defense than we allowed in quite some time. We had 41 sacks and allowed only 34. In 2019 we allowed 58 and got only 23 of our own on defense. Still think the O-line didn’t improve??? I had to go all the way back to 2009 to find a comparison even close to last season. In 2009 we had 44 sacks and allowed 34. Our +7 from last season was impressive, imagine if we make that even better this season . . .

Great article MikeE and I agree 100%!!

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Quite the article Mike!

The D is teetering on greatness, forget the stats, want to see a feared D.

We won’t be that from a physical standpoint, could be from a pressure one

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

ESPN shows Fitz with 14 times sacked and Tua 20, is that correct?

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think Wake put the fear into the O, that might be replicated by Phillips in a style similar to JTs

    • D's avatar D says:

Wake was a guy that other OT’s hated going against because he hit you with everything every time. I heard several of the top OT”s say they had him as the one player they really hated going against. They knew it was going to be a real battle from snap one to the final snap. I don’t think maybe he was as feared as a Von Miller or something like that but it might have been worse because he just wore the OT out and eventually that mean his wins against them were going to be really consistent.

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Could we actually have 2 lockdown CBS, and someone that doesn’t suck at Nickel and covering TEs?

May depend on the pressure up front, we’ll see

    • D's avatar D says:

Its all a balance Tim and I have argues the pressure vs the sticky coverage being the one that benefits the other more but uits solidly both. I think at first part of the game maybe pressure is king because all the pass rushers are fresh where as the sticky coverage at the end is more key because especially playing from behind they have to take more risks in the passing game. Either way, they both contribute to the other and the argument of which benefits the other more is splitting hairs at best.

      • D's avatar D says:

Probably matters a lot on the QB. the slippery ones that you cant really get your hands on, that nullifies pass rush anyways, and then there are others that will pick a secondary apart if given too much time. so again, the argument can be seen to fully match either side in several different scenarios, which means you pretty much need both lol

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I definitely think it’s a both situation, referring to pass rush and defensive backs ability to cover. So many offenses are designed for quick hits these days that’s it’s nearly impossible to get immediate enough pressure on the QB if the ball is out before 2 seconds. You have to be able to cover too. When plays get extended, either by the QB avoiding the rush or just a great job by the O-line, communication is the most important thing, especially in zone coverage and the defensive backs knowing and recognizing what’s going on. I’m hoping this year we have the pass rush that constantly puts pressure while we still have the cover corners in place, and are hopefully grooming the next cover guys like Iggy and Holland.

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats why i lean towards the sticky coverage being more critical, though i do recognize if ya cant get to a NFL quality QB he will eventually beat your coverage.

  7. D's avatar D says:

Mike, good write, and the OL thing at the very end, this is something i have been harping on all off-season.

People acted like we blew on the OL and we simply did not. Just from the good ole eyeball test i could tell this OL unit was significantly better than we have had in a while, and player like Hunt and Kindley, both Rookies were very impressive. Is there a reason Flowers became expendable, its a yes and yes, Hunt and Kindley. Jackson was very good as a rookie as well. He had some ups and downs but overall was way better than average. With Fluker and Davis as swing OL, able to play either OG or OT, and the rookie Eichenberg, competing for and probably rotating at the last spot (still not sure it will be G or T), we have a solid 4 out of 5 (counting Skura (who i see as a very solid OC) very good OLmen and a 5th which would start on most teams. I expect we will look even better this year.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Agree

What’s often missing from an OL evaluation is how the pressure came, meaning how many sacks came when the D rushed more than 4 vs no blitz.

Picking up blitzers is a big deal, but its usually a communication issue, which can be fixed.

If your OL gave up a good amount of sacks and pressures vs no blitz they aren’t very good

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve was right about the differential, we allowed 34 sacks last season, I accidentally scrolled up the page and grabbed the 23 from our FG’s allowed. Regardless, we still hadn’t had a positive differential like that since 2009. We’re trending in the right direction, and I think we can do better this season in that regard too.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Thanks D!

    • D's avatar D says:

All we have to do now if keep it going, bringing in next man up scenarios that keeps the depth and the future secure

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That will be the key to future success, but it doesn’t happen by accident, it’s your system, training…that makes it sustainable

      • D's avatar D says:

Well of course and selecting the right people, etc. Still, what i was really saying is that if your always looking for a starter you are never where you need to be. We need to get to where we aren’t looking for someone to be a starter right away, then we have finally made it at that unit.

  8. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Nice write Mike E. I agree with most of what you say. I am not as high on Byron Jones as other are here. I saw him get beat over the top a little too frequently for my liking last year

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wasn’t blown away by him either, but only cause of how his play matched up against the hype and the price tag. Still a good player.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think its part of how he plays the ball, using pretty elite recover and closing speed to catch up and be in position to catch it unless they perfectly hit the player in stride. This is problematic for those QB’s with elite touch and accuracy but leaves ya open to being really burned if they do put it in the perfect spot. Again, i don’t know if plays it like that or what but i did see him at least looking like he was playing it that way. The other question is, did he feel he had someone over the top, because there was mention that the secondary had some issues with communication last year, being new to playing with Jones and a few others still new to their current position.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Ken – Every DB gets beat occasionally, I think he’s very solid and happy to have him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s the key every DB gets beat, probably closer to a great batting average for DB success rate, if you just use the passes thrown his way

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — writing about the D must have been fun to write about….. and your nice piece shows it was.

I define hole as a spot where we don’t have an NFL-quality starter. Our D goes a big step beyond that. Who that we line up on D will not be at least and average NFL starter? Talking will be better than the other teams have at least half the time. I say all of them. That’s a good feeling.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Stanger – Definitely excited to write about the D. I think they can be one of the better NFL units this season, think top 5, and should be better than an already pretty good defense from last season.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Last year’s D was missing McKinley to stuff the run, consistent passrusher opposite Ogbah, a nickel CB, and someone to play Centerfield.

We may have better replacements at all 4 spots, at least 2 though, which should make us a better D

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the McKinney move is very underrated. I think we needed that guy that can play every down that is just as effective as a run defender as he is in coverage. Baker needs to move all over the place an that allows him to do his thing without any dropoff in the middle.

  10. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Good article Mike E! I’m definitely excited to see Phillips in action. He was a steal at 18 just like Tunsil
    was at 13

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m psyched to see him play as well. But reason we got him at #18 were the health and character concerns. Think the character concerns overblown but concussions are a concern, especially with a guy who plays LB/edge. Those never come up again and then he was a steal.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks New Age – Definitely the right pick for us, and I hope history shows that it was indeed a steal for us.

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Great convo going on. Please don’t let this ruin it. Watch it if you want or just move on. So far, from what I have seen, the comedy seems to be one sided so I apologize for that. I never come across this channel before. I find it funny as hell though.

    BBM,

    Just dropped an hour ago…

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Anyone here think Jason McCourty is going to play a lot this season? I don’t, but Flores and Belichick love their vet players.

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

      First off, nice write, Bro!

Second, no… I don’t think McCourty will see a whole lot of action, unless the injury bug hits.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We play 6 backs more than most teams. So guess depends what you mean by a lot. Not gonna start at corner. Doubt he beats out Holland. Not going to beat out Rowe (covering TEs not his gig). Can he play slot corner?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If I remember correctly we signed him as a safety, not to play CB. He’s 34, can’t imagine him playing CB anymore.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Slot CB is a young man’s game with speed and agility… McCourty isn’t that guy any longer.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So then sounds like McCourty will be 3rd/4th safety along with Brandon Jones. Pretty deep unit. And our 3rd S does hit the field in our schemes.

  14. Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seems remember writing that same thing recently

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Indeed! You were on the right track, as a few of us knew Tua would further rebound from his hip injury. Throw with the lower body, generating more torque.

Steve, Tua’s calves and thighs look to be HUGE compared to last year. He’s going to be alright, IMO.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s already done so much to get better, his work ethic is top notch, healing to 100%, new WRs…he’d have to take a huge step back himself on the field to regress, which isn’t happening.

We keep hearing the team needs to take the next step.

We took a huge step the last 2 years after bad starts.

Did they expect us to go from the worst team in NFL history (start of 2019) to a playoff team in 2020?

  15. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Our team’s in a very good place on paper with a lot of potential for growth. We’ve got an incredibly young team with firepower in the draft and a decent hold on our cap situation. Our coaching on the defensive side of the ball is top notch and even after losing our D coordinator after the first year, we got better. I like our front office and our HC. They make more good decisions than they do bad and when they make a mistake they quickly correct or move on from it.
However, there are still a lot of unanswered questions on the O. New coordinators sharing a role. Has Tua improved? Did we do enough to solidify or improve our receiving corps? Will the run game be better than last year after doing a bare minimum investment? I look forward to seeing these answered as the season plays out.
I fear our D will have to carry us again and it’s simply because we are so young and inexperienced on offense. We overachieved last year. Can we do it again and get into the playoffs?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But the D looks solid. 🙂

Get the Qs are on O , but we’ve made some good steps there. We’ll see if it is enough…. and mainly comes down to Tua.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nice write, Mike. Another thing about McKinney is he’s not just an thumper at ILB, the Dolphins have said he can do a lot of things at LB.

One correction I would make is McCain was not our SS, he played deep safety (FS) and Rowe was the SS.

As for pass rush vs. coverage, of course both are important. But if you can’t get to the QB you can have an all pro secondary and still get beat. The reason we have put such a premium on corners is because in our scheme we like to play a lot of man. Not all corners excel at it so we’ve been looking for and adding those types of players.

  17. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am starting to have football dreams. I dreamt were at the fest and we won 38-14. I even dreamt Tua’s stats: 17 of 22 165 yards 2 tds. ORob was still pissed because because he didn’t have 200 yards but we were all laughing at him. I think I have to lay off the night time medicine

    —————–
I agree with that assessment, Stanger. He’ll see the field, but he’s not going to be out there as much as others. He’s a solid depth player, brings leadership (the Patsie* way), and he came relatively cheap. To me, he was a very good signing.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, when discussing the secondary you left out Iggy in his 2nd season and the addition of vet CB Justin Coleman.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, we’ll see about Iggy going forward. I think they’re going to groom him to eventually replace either Howard or Jones, but as long as both of those guys are here and playing well, not sure how much of Iggy we see, especially if they only want him to play the outside.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

According to several media sources, we’re working Iggy on the inside as well.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I also think Coleman is a depth player here. He might work out as a slot corner, I like Needham though, he’s a feisty player, I hope he makes the cuts.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They wanted Iggy to focus on the outside last year because he was still learning corner not having played it all that much in college, so they didn’t want to put too much on his plate. I think this year they’ll expand his role a bit.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not into using kid gloves on a first round pick. We selected him knowing Jones and X were there. Doubt the plan was for him to sit 2 or 3 years. That’s most of his contract.

  20. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Iggy is behind 2 studs and is only 21. I’m in no rush to see him on the field. Our top guys are making a lot of money and doing well, there’s no need for our coaches to force the issue.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

As far as playing the boundary for sure. But the kid is a first round pick. Should have the talent to start at slot while being a back-up for the guys on the outside.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Correct. That’s why we’re reportedly working Iggy at slot this year.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

As I stated above, slot CB is a young man’s game. To be able to have X, Byron, and Iggy on the field at the same time is wise. What’s more, it gives Iggy more in-game experience, instead of just sitting behind X and Byron.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’re on the same page about that. And if remember right the Q before he was drafted was if he was best suited to play outside or inside. So should have the skills for both.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are times when we have 7 DBs on the field. That’s why we’re loading up on them.

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There was also a lot of discussion that Holland might play some in the slot as well. Good to hear that Iggy is also working there but his ultimate destination is outside. Holland’s hopeful destination is FS but it seems like a lot of guys wil be working multiple spots, and don’t count out Nik Needham who is a fighter!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We talk about FS and SS, but most of the time on the Dolphins D those positions aren’t even positions. Maybe some of the folks on the board are more savvy, but I can’t figure out what the formation is a whole bunch.

So think “multiple spots” is right. I don’t even know what they are…. so hard to project where. So who is even harder. Just think of it as “the swarm.”

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rowe played close to the LOS and covering TEs and RBs a lot. That’s your SS. McCain was the guy playing 15-20 yards deep in a cover 3, that’s FS or deep safety. We’re still going to play like that except it won’t be McCain this year.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I completely agree. And get that we have different safeties doing different things. But then in some schemes that is not the case. We play 3 safeties a lot for instance. And the one part of what we do is leaving the man in the deep middle back there. Thinking will be Holland or maybe MCcourty this year.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, not expecting Iggy to sit this year. But that’s how the team handled him last year as I stated above. They drafted him for his upside and they knew he had a learning curve. And like I said with my 3:07 post, we play a lot of DBs in our Amoeba formations with 2 DL, 2 LB and 7 DBs with usually 7 guys roaming around the LOS trying to confuse the QB and OL with blocking schemes and who’s doing what. So lots of DB are on the field. I do think Iggy will be one of them often. To play those schemes we also need depth for the season because guys do get hurt. I wouldn’t be surprised if we kept as many as 11 DBs this year.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Highlights showing the Amoeba formation is fun to watch, especially against Goff last year🤭

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Have no doubt he will hit the field in those schemes, but that would just make him another guy. Hoping for a bit more out of the first rounder. Slot CB was what was hoping for.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s all about snaps, not a definitive position. Iggy also plays STs. Any time a player is on the field it matters. Not sure what you mean by just another guy?

We might see Iggy on the boundary while Byron Jones matches up with a specific player. He did a lot of that with Dallas covering a team’s top receiver whether it was a slot receiver or TE. A lot of what we do is about matchups. The more cover guys we have the more we can do with blitz schemes.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just another guy meant limited snaps. When draft someone in the first round am hoping for a guy that plays a lot and makes an impact. What are you thinking about when that happens? Great that he plays special teams and might be in some specialty schemes.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Iggy plays much more this season. He got a taste as a rookie but it was kind of a redshirt season.

We’re on the same page about that. And if remember right the Q before he was drafted was if he was best suited to play outside or inside. So should have the skills for both.
    ——————
Absolutely, man. We’re on the EXACT same page.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Iggy will play if he plays well. If he doesn’t he’ll be watching from the bench as other guys who are playing well play. That’s the way it works, you have to earn your spot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s definitely how Flores rolls. That’s why Gaskin was the starting RB last year. He beat out all the other backs. Preston Williams as a UDFA did that in his rookie season. Kindley beat out some vets as a 4th round rookie. Sieler as a 2018 7th round pick of the Ravens who was waived and claimed by us in 2019 earned his playing time last year. Now he’s a staple on our DL. Competition and production is what it’s all about.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt about that. Just ask Iggy…. or maybe better ask Needham. Same time best for us if Iggy wins the spot. We put the first in him and assume cause of his physical abilities and skills. So should have more upside. Hope he breaks into it.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Definitely how Flores rolls and obviously that works because we had a good season. I expect Iggy will improve, he’s a great athlete and even when he struggled against Stefon Diggs, a lot of great CB’s did as well. We have to hope he plays better because we spent a high pick on him so it would be best if he pans out for us.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No doubt Iggy has to progress this season. All rookies should be better in their 2nd seasons. The head spinning should slow down. Less thinking and more playing with their talent.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You would think with our team being as young as it but also the young players progressing that we should be better than last year. The thing is we haven’t been used to this kind of a rebuild since Jimmy Johnson in 1996 and the Parcells regime in 2008. Neither got us to a championship but think about how many years we were just trying to patch the team when it wasn’t good enough. Even Shula’s last season in 1995 was a patchwork team around Marino.

We finally started doing it the right way again under Grier and Flores in 2019 and the 3rd season hasn’t started yet. Maybe three times is a charm. 🙂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Shula started stockpiling a lot of free agents from ’93 on. Irving Fryar, Keith Jackson, Keith Byars, Gene Atkins, Michael Stewart, Chris Singleton and Ron Heller. He went for it, it just never happened. I’m glad we haven’t gone crazy in FA, just keep it steady as we have been and we’re building a really nice team.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Steve Entman too.

That 95 team started off 4-0 and finished 5-7 getting throttled in the playoffs by the Bills.

None of know what’s going to happen, but the Grier/Flores approach has been the right way to do it. Now it’s up to the players we’ve added.

There are only 9 players left from the Gase era. Can you name them?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

This build is in the Pats/Steelers way. Setting up a platform than can be sustained year after year. Next step is gonna be when the rookie contracts come up for renewal. Gonna be a different stage in it. Won’t be able to keep them all. We’ll see what happens down the road.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Baker, Parker, Davis, Gesicki, Deiter, Sanders and maybe Laird. That’s all I can think of, not sure how many of these are right.

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK Tim, do tell, I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Howard, Grant, Wilson and Smythe.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I meant to say Howard the first time but must have dropped him while I was typing. Wasn’t gonna think of Smythe but was thinking Grant. It’s funny, there are times when I can think of just about anything, and others when I hit a wall. Ever feel like that?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! To be fair, I scrolled the roster to come up with this. Howard and Grant were both drafted the same year in 2016, Wilson was signed as a FA in 2018 and Smythe was drafted the same year as Gesicki also in 2018.

It just goes to show you what a real blowup and rebuild looks like a few years later.

  29. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank you, thank you, Mike E, for getting to the D. My favorite unit in football.

If we hadn’t signed McKinney, Parsons would have been our after 6 pick, imo. Thought that position was more of a hole and more crucial to the overall success of the D.

I was not really impressed with the bend but don’t break D. To me, if you’re bending, your D is getting beat all the way down the field, always in poor field position, and gassed in 4th qtr during the most critical time of game. Terrible, imo.

3 and outs, confusion, top 10 D or better should be the expectation for 2021.

    Go Dolphins!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My only disagreement is we were not a bend but don’t break defense. We attacked/blitzed and put players out there on an island quite a bit. We just weren’t good enough yet to match the best in the NFL. We had our moments. That was part of teaching – that this is what we’re going to do. It’s only season three under the Grier/Flores regime.

Baker and Howard are the only defensive players left from the Gase era in 2018. We’ve had a total revamp on defense and the offense is now following.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It just seemed painful sometimes to watch the breakdowns when you could see the “swarm” or “amoeba” do its thing. We weren’t complete for sure.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I agree Phillips is key as a DeMarcus Ware type edge guy. That’s who Phillips reminds me of. Tall, rangy, athletic and has speed. Not fair to put him at that level as a rookie, but I don’t compare blue chip prospects to average players. What’s the point?

We expect Phillips to become a player drafted at #18 to be an impact player on the edge at the LOS. His position is not that complicated. Do what you do. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Watch the ball and attack the backfield. Yeah set the edge and don’t get fooled, drop in zone coverage here and there, but it’s all about following the ball after the snap. Where does it go? Attack the ball on the first level of defense. That’s the job of an Edge player.

      See LT. LOL

Don’t know where these numbers come from. My cousin in Indiana just died from COVID last week and he got his shots back in March. He had no underlying conditions either. I had another distant cousin (not blood related) in CA die last month from a stroke the next day after getting her second shot. Just found out about that one after hearing about my cousin in Indiana.

So I don’t know where this “All folks who didn’t get vaccinated” comes from.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m sorry for the loss of your cousins. And should have said “most” rather than “all.” Indisputable that the vaccine is effective at stopping people from getting Covid. And even those who do don’t tend to get the most severe cases. Which makes what happened to your cousin from Indiana all the more sad.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

The likelihood someone under 50 without several co-morbidities dies from COVID are extremely rare and in the same ballpark as people dying from vaccine SEs. There is no evidence of long-term issues with COVID either.

Anyone can get the vaccine and it’s very safe…just like COVID is for the vast majority of people. The level of misinformation spread by the media and bad actors is truly amazing.

  54. Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

    Re: COVID vaccines…

I will always side with individual liberty, as provided by our Consitution and Bill of Rights. That means, I would never rip somebody for taking the vaccine, nor would I ever rip somebody for not taking the vaccine… it’s a personal decision, as it should be.

HOWEVER, should this become a recurrent disease (we have no reason to think so at this point in time… it’s FAR too early to determine), vaccination for this should become such as we do for past childhood disease.

The problem many have — those who choose not to get the COVID vaccine — is that it was rushed so quickly to the public. They get LABELED as “anti-vaxers”, when in fact, they realize there was so little to no experimentation with the product.

That does NOT mean that one is an “anti-vaxer”, rather they are wise to the fact that such rushed products have led to permanent and unintended damage. What’s more, if one has had COVID (like me), one has natural immunity to the disease: latest reports suggest a ‘mere’ lifetime of immunity.

The ‘herd immunity’ is what has killed disease in the past. Yes, we should be aware of the variant strains that naturally (or unnaturally) occur. And when that happens, that jab in your arm was no good to begin with, being one needs a so-called “booster shot”.

Does one really trust the government that much, after we know they’ve lied to us time and again about origins of “COVID”? That’s a rhetorical question, but I believe everybody should have a choice in the matter.

I respect everybody’s personal decision to take the vaccine, and thus, they should be immune to anybody who did not take the vaccine. I worry about these “PRO-vaxers”, who want total control over everybody.

Everybody just needs to chill. This, too, will pass like an outdated cheap ham sandwich out of a vending machine. UFOs are the next big thing, and the world will be onto something new, according to schedule.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have not gotten the vaccine because I never got flu shots and never got the flu, other than a bug here and there.

As for COVID, I survived it so far when it was really at its height, so why fuck with what’s working? That’s my approach to it. Some people have antibodies that naturally fight it. Maybe I have that, maybe I don’t. I don’t want to fuck with what is working though.

I don’t think COVID is a hoax or anything like that, I’m just not on board with the herd mentality with a very little body of work in results. That choice of mine might kill me at some point, but at least it was my choice.

I believe in levels of conformity, but not everything. Mainly because I have lost trust in a lot of people who have a big voice.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

That’s right, Bro… it must be a personal choice. I mean, unless this thing turns into the Spanish Flu (100 years ago, 100M dead), and it WON’T… NOBODY gets to tell us what to do.

    • agreed that we can not trust the government, trump wasted a year , and a half million lives suggesting retarded whack doctor cures, and lying about everything

now we see covid cases dropping very fast, the vaccinations worked MUCH better at getting covid under control, than the trump misinformation and deception campaign

    —————-
I wanted to explain this comment…

December of 2019, I was sicker than a dog for about 2 1/2 weeks. No, I never tested positive for COVID (that was before testing was even available), but I KNOW that I had it. Exact same symptoms, same duration, yet I still worked. It spread throughout my workplace like wildfire, and I wasn’t the first to acquire it… and I wasn’t the last to acquire it.

Few months later, after COVID became international news, I had a meeting with 2 of my colleagues in very close quarters for nearly an hour. We were breathing the same air for nearly an hour. These 2 both came down with COVID a day later (thus, they were ‘spreaders’ in that moment), but I was fine.

I’m immune, being I KNOW I had it back in Dec ’19. Got tested a few weeks ago with symptoms (I posted about it here), and again I was around a few who had tested positive… I came up NEGATIVE. I KNEW I had it, back in Dec ’19.

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

Now if one is at risk with pre-existing conditions and had never acquired COVID, PLEASE, get vaccinated! I will never tell anyone they’re nuts for getting the shot.

Just PLEASE, leave us who choose to not get vaccinated alone! You’re immune now… so funk off! LOL

  56. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Stanger, no worries. I am sure a very high % of COVID deaths are unvaccinated people.

Like M13, I found out in March I had the antibodies already so I am not getting the shot.

Like Tim, I never get the flu shot and never get the flu/sick either. For that reason, I was never planning to get the shot anyway. To each his/her own.

Thanks for the condolences regarding my cousins y’all. The one in CA I never met before and the other only met a few times at family reunions. Still sad this has been unleashed on the world.

We shouldn’t point fingers but we all do. All we should do is pray for everyone.

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t preach to anyone what they should do as far as getting the shot or not getting the shot, but it does appear to be safer with the vaccine if you haven’t yet contracted COVID-19. The other issue of course is it seems as if you might be limited with regards to travel or entry to certain places if you don’t have the vaccine. I got the shot because I’m in close contact with a lot of people at my job so it seemed like it was the better option. I wasn’t sure about getting it either, I was on the fence for a while. FWIW, it looks like health care providers such as myself are going to have to continue to wear masks at work whether vaccinated or not. That’s a bummer! I’ve had enough of wearing that damn mask!

Crispen Glover is a great actor.
did you know he was only in back to the future 1 and none of the sequels. he was fired because he didn’t like the fact that the characters profited in the movie when Mcfly came back to the future. he said it sent the wrong message to viewers, however he had to go with it being contractually obligated.
they had a face mold of him, created a mask and used that on another actor in a sequel, he was hanging upside down in the sequel on an anti gravity mechanism due to back issues.
he filed a lawsuit against the producers for using his likeness and not only won the case but they have now created a law on his behalf preventing that from happening again.

Tua is the favorite media target this offseason, but Flores isn’t an idiot.

“I just think he’s comparing last year to where he is right now, and I get it,” Flores said on Friday. “I understand that. I remember being a first-year position coach and coming out of that year, going into the spring, going into the next season and saying, ‘I could’ve been better last year. I should have been better. I’m better now.’ So I think contextually, I think we all understand where he’s coming from. …

“I think he’s thinking about where he is right now versus that time a year ago, just reflecting. And that’s good. This time is about reflection and where you are now versus where you were six months ago. I think he’s worked hard to improve in a lot of areas, and I think he has, and I think he’s kind of communicated that out.”

Tua: “Got to play … that’s pretty boring, you know?”
Crash: “Of course it’s boring. That’s the point. Write it down!”
Tua: “One day at a time …”
Crash: “I’m just happy to be here. Hope I can help the Dolphins.” Write it down. “I just want to give it my best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out.”

Steve – They? Do you mean republicans or conservatives? I’m both of those but maybe you’re speaking of a different sect, those that only revere Trump? I’m not in that category at all. He had his chance and only his childish behavior kept him from winning again. Nothing will change and too many people can’t stand him and moderates and centrists won’t vote for him. Only Trump fanatics will. I hope there are more realistic voters this time around who don’t try Trump again because I think that spells disaster. Do you really believe that Trump can win? I mean all he had to beat was Glass Joe and Kamala and he lost, how’s he going to beat a better contender?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Trump has a power (maybe two). He gets people who never voted before to vote. Like only half the country did before. Same time he turns off the moderates and a lot of them voted for Biden, which is why he lost. Same time he also put a stranglehold on the GOP. Trump runs for 2024 and he will get the nomination absent health or serious legal problems.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If that’s the case then we’ll have another 4 years of Democratic reign.

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, even though the Packers didn’t use top picks on offensive players to “help” Rodgers, he’s played with plenty of talent throughout his career. All QBs need talent around them. It goes hand in hand. If you can’t block and get open, the QB can only do so much.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s been a while since they got him a top notch player to help him on offense though. Also, drafting Jordan Love in the 1st RD last year was very questionable. Rodgers has a lot left in the tank. Why draft his possible replacement so early? They haven’t spent a 1st or 2nd round pick on a WR in a long time. Davante Adams was a 2nd RD pick in 2014.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah but Adams, Jones and the TE his name escapes me are top players at their positions. The team goes 13-3 and plays in championship games. Things could be worse for him.

Anyway my main point is all QBs need support around them, even the elite ones.

“I think for me, over the last three years in New England, I got a chance to line up at every position in the secondary – from nickel, to corner, to free safety, to sometimes strong safety, to sometimes on third-down packages, kind of a dime linebacker spot. I think for me, more important than comfort with any specific position, it’s just building comfort in the defense. Obviously I played for ‘Flo’ (Brian Flores) as a coordinator in 2018 in New England; but the Miami defense isn’t exactly the New England defense;”

    — Jason McCourty, who interested me by saying different from the Pats D…… and he should know.

Tim – I think success the WR’s have are because of Rodgers. He’s so damn good, he makes everyone better. Still, you see how an elite talent like Adams does there

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah in the case of Rodgers and other elite QBs there is something to that. But those receivers still have to get open and catch it.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree. But came darn close to getting the nomination last two times around. Dem party has a serious progressive/centrist split. Next up could be Elizabeth Warren. Younger than Trump and she has run already.

Stanger – Pocahontas might be the one candidate that Trump could beat. I’d put her in the Hillary Clinton category

  75. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Mike E and stangerx, the Republican/conservative agenda is gone. It has been taken over by Trump cult. I know you know that.

When Liz Cheney from Wisconsin, no less, was removed from leadership forr refusing to go along with the Big Lie pretty much convinced me it has nothing to do with a conservative agenda or Republican ideals. That’s gone.

For math scholars, Trump got about 74M vs Biden’s 80+M. Is time for revisionism already?

And, why would Bernie run in 24 against Biden to get to Trump? Dreaming again, imo.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That may be true, and as far as I’m concerned I think that’s unfortunate. DeSantis would be a much better candidate than Trump. Trump has no shot of getting any moderate votes and I have to be honest, I would vote against him unless it was Pocahontas, I can’t stomach that

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It is unfortunate! However, huge deficits and corporations that pay no taxes, like the Amazons of the world is conservative? How did that happen? It only took him 4 years to destroy the party and he’s still at.

        So sad.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Trump took over the party and he wasn’t a Republican to start with any more than he was the Democrat he was for decades before. So guess what Republican means these days is mostly up to him. Want to say National Populist, but that is giving him too much credit for an actual political ideology.

The following is a pretty good breakdown of our current RB room, and why we didn’t take Najee, Javonte, or any other RB early. Just watched the whole thing (it’s just over an hour long), and I found it to be interesting. I agree with MANY things this guy talks about: he seems fairly football intelligent and knows his Phins history…

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

One of the things he talks about is that the cap number declined this year (caused by COVID) by $20M. So instead of investing in the RB position this year, we invested elsewhere (O-Line, for example).

By the way: great breakdown of Myles Gaskin in this video.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No idea how it will happen but I think both of the two major parties need to be revamped. There is too much disagreement within and between both parties. I find it absurd. It’s like radical agendas mean more than the good of the people. We talk about blowing up teams and starting over. Time to get the dinosaurs out who play political games. The younger generation doesn’t quite know how to do it yet. Yet!

    • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

The younger generation is what’s scary. Talking about the AOC’s and Omar’s (‘The Squad’), who are transforming what was once a decent party and fought for the American worker (The Democrats in the day of JFK) into socialists/communists.

It’s been said a millions times over: JFK in the day was to the right of today’s Donald Trump.

On our current trajectory, our youth will be the death of America and the rebirth of the days of Genghis Khan. JMO, as always.

Serious question: can anybody see our current 18-year olds doing what our then 18-year olds did on D-Day to preserve freedom, the world-over? I’ll answer for everybody: NO.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re focused on extremes. There are also young people with common sense. The mature ones in office are no better, they’re the ones fucking around. It’s also inevitable that our government will get younger. That’s just life. I agree with what Krishna said below.

You know why, man… you KNOW why! That’s how they keep control, regardless of elections. The “duopoly” you’ve told me about is so right it’s not funny. I call it the NWO, but it’s these life-long politicians and their unelected bureaucrats who retain the real power behind the scenes.

I completely agree with you and Krishna about term limits.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Simply put, no more career politicians. No lifetime benefits either. I understand former presidential protection though. Lots of decisions they make can bring on many enemies. They are the face of the nation.

After having watched the video I posted @ 7:57 PM this evening, and as it relates to pass-blocking to help Tua, I wonder if there IS a chance we might take a flyer on Le’Veon Bell or Todd Gurley, if the price is right?

The price would definitely have to be right, and we’d likely need to have seen enough of Malcolm Brown and Gerrid Doaks to think we might be able do better.

Something I didn’t know that I now know? Gerrid Doaks has a relatively serious injury history (knees). Great value in the 7th round, but that’s why he fell. And no, it’s not like he was Jay Ajayi who fell to the 5th round… he wasn’t THAT good.

Something to watch for, once the pads come on.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the coaches really like Gaskin and Ahmed along with the addition of Brown. It’s a do your job mentality. Situational football. Gaskin also caught 41 passes last year for a 9.5 average with 2 TDs in 10 games. Improve on the OL, the young guys get better as RBs, Tua steps up his game in his 2nd year, along with improving the receiving core at WR and TE.

Who knows if adding a vet RB with a big name that still isn’t on a team upgrades the position. We don’t seem to be too worried about it. It does not appear to me that we think a stud RB is the key to what we’re doing. We’ll see if they’re right.

From what I see is Gaskin, Ahmed and Brown are the committee approach. We’ll see what Doaks and Scarlett bring to the table. Not sure where Laird fits unless his overall value on STs is too good to move on. He’s definitely a fringe tweener RB.

Krishna, nothing is perfect. But we seem to want to make everything horrible between different groups of people and it’s not true. The angry ones who yell the loudest get the biggest reaction. That’s not how most of us live. Everyone sees the problems and make excuses for why their agenda is not the solution. But they continue to attack shadows without naming more than a few powerful names. That’s not the problem. It’s about how you and I treat our fellow citizen and the people you engage with in foreign lands. It’s simple stuff.

It’s not about hardware, it’s about morals.

Over a thousand people have gone on his website to complain about big tech. When they try to share his song on social media they get warnings. Some are getting “Community Standaards Violations” or even shut down for 3 days.

    This shit is ridiculous!

His song is still #1 on itunes though for now.

Yeah, no doubt. TM does everything out of his house and still personally autographs every CD he sells.

This was his video he put out discussing it.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Actually music has been controlled by the artist more now than ever. It’s now social media deciding what is appropriate or not. It needs to be portrayed as comical, not sensitive. That’s the problem. Too many people looking to be insulted rather than laughing at this life we have.

The clock ticks for everyone. Make the best of your time. Constantly focusing on when you’re gone is kind of fucked up. Save the next group of children who will be adults and the next generation of assholes. That’s never going away. LOL

That’s why The USA has a Constitution, not a whim of power. Respect it and realize it. Those who don’t, are dummies to me. But the youngsters will have to realize what they did if they try to end that. That’s on them. Once your freedom is gone, good luck getting it back.

We have more in common, than anyone else I work with.

She’s a Democrat, but not into politics, she does however package up holiday leftovers and passes the plates out to the homeless, very kind heart.

So what’s the difference between her and other black people, if there’s systemic racism holding black people back, why wasn’t she?
