What will the 2021 Miami Dolphins Defense look like?

Two of our top 4 picks in the 2021 draft were spent on defense. The #18 pick to me was the pivotal pick because I think adding Jaelan Phillips to this defense will energize a pass rush that improved last year with the addition of Emmanuel Ogbah who led the team, and also the emergence of “AVG” Andrew Van Ginkel who really came on last season. Keep in mind Emmanuel Ogbah had 8 sacks through 9 games last season and finished with 9, so 1 sack in the last 7 games. There’s a reason, opposing teams focused on Ogbah because Shaq Lawson wasn’t getting it done. So now we have the young pass rusher we need and in exchange for Shaq Lawson, we received ILB Benardrick McKinney. Don’t underestimate this move. As much as I believe drafting Phillips was so important to our defense, I think trading for Benardrick McKinney was a big step too, though not as much as getting Phillips. Consider that Elandon Roberts is rehabbing from a knee injury very late in the season (Game 16), we needed this. In addition, McKinney will be the perfect inside backer that will continue to allow #55 to be all over the field and we’ll now have a guy who can be productive against the run and can also chase down plays to the sidelines. In round 2 pick #36, the Dolphins took who they believe to be the starting FS opposite SS Eric Rowe, Jevon Holland. Holland will be given every opportunity to win that job as good ole Bobby McCain was let go.

I think our defense already had a very promising trajectory, even before the Lawson/McKinney trade and before the draft. I like our young, strong defensive line with DE’s Christian Wilkins and Emmanuel Ogbah and NT Raekwon Davis. Ogbah is the elder statesman at nearly 28 while Wilkins is nearly 26 and Davis is only 24. AVG will be 26 at season’s start and Jaelan Phillips is 22. These guys are just going to get better, and make no mistake, Jaelan Phillips is going to make this defense better. He will be a guy that must be accounted for and when there are multiple guys on your defense that fit in that category, that’s when defenses feast. I think Phillips is going to have that impact on our defense. If AVG can improve on the good work he did last year, our defense can be a real force. He played in only 46% of the defensive snaps and managed 5.5 sacks and 10 QB hits in addition to nearly 50 tackles. If he can earn more playing time and increase his production accordingly, watch out!

The secondary was already the premier unit of the defense and hopefully Jevon Holland can elevate it even further. Last season Bobby McCain played SS and played the majority of snaps there. This year Rowe will be playing SS and it’s expected that rookie Jevon Holland will play FS. Holland may also play some slot corner and nickel corner, a job Nik Needham handled most of the time last season. With two excellent cover corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones, this may be the best CB tandem in the NFL. Howard is the ballhawk and playmaker while Jones is your typical shutdown corner. Howard started and played in all 16 games finishing with an incredible 10 INT’s. Jones started and played 14 games last season and totaled just 2 INT’s, but as I said earlier, he does a great job of shutting down the receiver he is responsible for.

I honestly can’t wait to see this defense on the field. If Phillips lives up to the hype I’m bestowing on him this defense can be something to see. We so desperately need that player that opposing teams must pay extra special attention to and I can’t remember the last time we’ve had that. For some perspective, last season was the first season in which we accumulated more sacks on defense than we allowed in quite some time. We had 41 sacks and allowed only 34. In 2019 we allowed 58 and got only 23 of our own on defense. Still think the O-line didn’t improve??? I had to go all the way back to 2009 to find a comparison even close to last season. In 2009 we had 44 sacks and allowed 34. Our +7 from last season was impressive, imagine if we make that even better this season . . .

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

But you don’t know if that he underreported. You have no evidence there was tax evasion. You don’t understand what you are saying
    ———————————————————————————–

Forbes, dozens of articles, and reports on tax returns said he underreported, i guess they doent know what they are saying either ? i provided the links, i dont see any links from You proving he did not underreport? do you understand what You are saying, good, provide proof please,

where is your proof he did NOT underreport income, and paid his fair share like the rest of us?
ill wait for your links, thanks

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

The proof is in your links David. None of those links say he under reported or did anything illegal. They created a stat for a narrative. I even posted the quote from the article itself that all the articles based their information on. Did you read them or just the sensationalized headline made for clicks?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

My proof that he did not underreport is that he was not arrested for tax fraud

      • that is not proof, no evidence, and there are no links provided proving it

and SB 7, some of what Bezos does is legal wrangling, and some of it is cooking the books to undereport income

read into it further , like i have

i will not answer any more questios, until someone provides links that bezos does NOT underreport income, he does not cook the books, and he pays his fair share like the rest of us,

otherwise, we are beating a dead horse imo, show me he pays his fair share, and for an added bonus, show me that he has never received a subsidy before and we can all
see i was just mistaken about all of it, thanks

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

You are talking out of your ass David

      • you are just pissed i busted you with no proof, you have nothing? i thought so

maybe next time be prepared to back up your bullshit Ken, thanks

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

David you have no comprehension of what you are saying. It has been widely reported by CNN, MSNBC and Fox that there is no evidence of any illegal conduct on the part of Bezos. He has not been arrested. What has been reported is what the percentage of income represented his tax payment. What no one has seen is how it was calculated and how they arrived at the amount owed but without any evidence you decided there was illegal activity because you have some weird hard on to hate wealthy successful individuals. However you do not grasp a working definition of what tax fraud is

  3. Ken, You believe he does not underreport, and pays his fair share, but have NOTHING to show that? why cant you prove YOUR point?

the floor is yours to prove Your point, ill wait for the links

  4. ken, that is unnacceptable, you failed to prove your point that Bezos does not underreport and he pays his fair share like the rest of us,

and you failed to provide a link to back up your point
that was what i asked for

i will wait for your proof , or assume you dont have anything to show

im ready to move on unless you can provide something with a link showing he does not undereport, and pays his fair share like the rest of us

thats only fair, because im tired of beating a dead horse

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am not the one trying to prove a point you are. You have come to a conclusion that based on what Bezos paid he underreported. That conclusion is both factually and logically unsound

      • already proved my point on the the last page, but for some reason you LIKE beating a dead horse, with no proof on your point? its not just bezos, its the top 1 percent that are scamming the taxpayers and collecting socialist handouts/subsidies too

$175 billion per year. That’s how much the top 1% of taxpayers contribute to the tax gap—the difference between federal taxes legally owed and those actually collected—each year, according to a March study.
        Forbes and Propolitica

legally owed, and actually collected, what does that term mean? the rich are paying their fair share or not?

how can something be legally owed, and not paid, and thats ok?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

That is a different issue David. One that has to do with the tax code and not necessarily the wealthy

      • i already proved that Bezos underreports, and showed the links. i dont want to do it again, if you didnt read all the links, so be it

You did not prove your point that im wrong about bezos, and have nothing to show he reports everything and pays his fair share

i think i mentioned a few times im ready to move on now, it seems like its time to move on

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The links didn’t support what you said

      • last thing, i do agree with you that the last part is where the tax code needs to be fixed, that is yet another issue that has to be dealt with that prevents them from paying their fair share like we have too
and i had a final point about legally owed, and yet not collected, which is showing that the rich dont pay their fair share like we do, EVEN when its legally owed, SMH

  5. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Well I’ve installed a breathalyzer to my laptop!

That should take care of any further drunk responses!

  6. if i legally owe the bank for a truck payment, but refuse to pay, what would happen to the truck?

it gets repossessed, banks dont play that game, they want the $

  7. where are Your links to support what You said?

    • wrong place, lol this was for Ken

and also, the links i showed, DO list the exact amounts that bezos underpaid, and i mentioned them also

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

What did I say that needs support? I have been demonstrating the flaws in your logic not really making assertions. You made the assertions you have the burden. You obviously have not done any type of organized debate

      • you have not demonstrated the flaws in my logic, and you have not been able to prove that bezos reports everything and pays his fair share, You failed to provide a link showing that bezos pays his fair share and reports accurately, but want to argue that he does

MOST people already know it, and dont need David to tell them, its common knowledge that i DONT have to prove, its already been proven

why should i have to prove whats already been proven? you are stating something that goes against the common thread of factual knowledge of the matter, but have no links to back it up, and we all know why

        THEY DONT EXIST,

most people are aware the top 1 percent are tax deadbeats that get billionaire welfare

  8. ken , for the sake of others, lol lets wrap this up please?

if You want to believe that bezos reports everything, and pays his fair share like we do, you can think that if you want too, i wont try to change your mind anymore

ill just read Your links you failed to provide, and research it, promise not to nitpick it tonight, lol

  9. Ken, im done, thats it, You will have to do independent research if You want to learn how Bezos is a tax deadbeat on welfare, im moving on

does that sound logical? it does to Me
    thanks for the convo

  10. Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

    Just caught up

Observation: David has somehow, someway, made left-leaning individuals stick up for capitalism. That’s incredible! But what’s more, I absolutely agree with David regarding these billionaires who get away with (not literal) ‘murder’.

And here’s another factoid: George Soros (the billionaire liberal ICON) hasn’t paid a penny of taxes since 2016. If that was the case with Donald Trump (it isn’t), leftists would go NUTS!

I think we’re beginning to build a bridge here, on the FMU… and David isn’t out of his mind, either.

Stop thinking linear (as in left to right, lib to con), and start thinking circular. The left and right are beginning to understand one another (at least on this blog), meeting at the top (or the bottom) of the said circle.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Because I am a democrat doesn’t I don’t believe in capitalism. David is out right calling for socialism. He wants to redistribute the wealth by means of taxation.

      • Marinofan13's avatar Marinofan13 says:

I don’t disagree with ya, Ken. We’ll have to work on David in that aspect, but I think he’s beginning to understand (no disrespect to you, David).

      • Ken, thanks for talking for Me, but for HOURS, we have talked about bezos not reporting his income, and not paying his fair share..

that is not asking for taxation to redistribute wealth, its suggesting that ALL of us, even the richest man on earth pays his fair share, like all of us do

do You agree with socialistic, billionaire welfare/tax subsidies, and tax avoidance from the ultra rich?

remember many of these are the same people that manipulate the markets and take investors money with falsehoods

elon musk, buffet, trump and many others have manipulated the markets and basically abuse the markets for their own benefits, guess who loses?

However, the US has the highest number of what Knight Frank calls UHNWI residents — ultra-high net worth individuals. Like you, I cannot stand Jeff Bezos, and for the exact same reasons.

He owns the Washington Post, Amazon (and the media that it provides), and he’s absorbing other corps.

One of my favorite guys in office is Sen. Josh Hawley, MO. Corporations and mergers are taking over the world, and Hawley rightly states that these conglomerates/mergers/monopolies need to be broken up.

I won’t tolerate the .01 % of the wealthiest people in the world controlling us… BREAK ‘EM UP! The laws are on the books to prevent this from happening, but our government has turned a blind eye to what’s going on. Why? They’re probably getting paid off by the .01% (globalists) who control the world (NWO).

i dont support the democrats btw, i only voted for biden to get trump the fuck out of office, seriously dont like trump and how he lied to us all the time

biden is also bought off with corporations though, so i despise him for that

but we cant get any candidates, in any parties, that wont take corporate bribes, they all take it, but a small handful that will never be allowed to run because they wont accept bribes

Fact: President Trump put more minorities and women in power than any other administration prior.

I have NO idea where you get your data from, man. I pray it isn't from CNN.

There is no "white superiority" going on, and President Trump ENSURED as much by his cabinet, his nominees, and his support of minorities.

We can always agree to disagree, but I'm sorry… you are DEAD wrong on this accusation.

    • what are the chances the GOP will field a minority woman in the next election?

i didnt catch your answer on that, thanks

and i totally disagree with trump, he had extremely few minorities, didnt want to rent to them, hid them in the back when he walks into his properties, charlottesville both sides bullshit, shithole countries, criticizing the sob in the NFL, CRT, on and on and on and on

im not going to list all of his racist statements and activities, they are too numerous and full of shit

the white supremacists support trump, but not any of the democrats, because he aligns with their racism,
and so does the gop who are trying to deny the rights for minorities to vote, the same thing the dixie crats did except the extreme violence

    • trump said he was going to do the infrastructure, if he did what he promised, it would have already been done

David, How old was that alligator gar pic? You are correct, if it is a current pic. They are protected here in FL. I believe the only permit for them is for scientific research. Don’t know why someone would go against fishing regs to get one when you could go after the long nosed gar which are much more plentiful, get to to 5′ in length and much more prehistoric looking.

You may not think they look good to eat but they are. Like mullet they were once considered a trash fish.

We go bow fishing over in Alabama (Mobile Delta) for long nosed gar. It is a freaking blast! We are allowed to harvest 1 alligator gar per person in Alabama but pass them up cause we know the numbers are limited there also. If we ever come by a trophy 10 footer though, I think all bets are off.

We put chunks of long nosed gar in a crab boil with shrimp instead of crab. It is almost a flavor match for fresh blue crab. Just make sure you leave out any blood line and only use fresh white meat from the fillet.

So, in football, today is the first day of mandatory mini camp and there has been no sign of X Howard. Hold out? My opinion is they made him the highest paid CB in the league when he had only played one complete season. He still has 4 years left on that contract that made him the highest paid CB. He should STFU and play.

If he becomes a distraction trade him for 2 1st round picks. or a 1st and two 2nds

  39. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Minicamp will run from Tuesday through Thursday. The team is allowed to hold two practices for a total of 3.5 hours each day of the minicamp, with the second practice limited to a walkthrough. The Dolphins coaches and players are believed to have made a deal this year to slow down some of the workouts during the offseason training program in order to ensure maximized attendance at all the workouts, avoiding some of the skipped practices from players on other teams around the league.

Falling under the Phase Three rules of the offseason training program, the minicamp can include 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills, but there is no live contact allowed.

Following the end of the minicamp on Thursday, the Dolphins will break until the start of training camp on July 27. The NFL and Dolphins are planning for fans to be allowed to attend this year’s training camp after COVID-19 prevented that last year.

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tim, yes he signed the extension in May before the ’19 season started. He was under contract through the end of the ’19 season so his 5 year extension started in ’20 (year one) now ’24 is the final year of his contract. we haven’t played this year so there are 4 years left on his contract.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

good, then you understand that this is YEAR TWO of his extension. LOL ’19 already under contract, signed five year extension for 20, 21, 22, 23, 24. This is year TWO.

It’s pretty simple. He signed the extension two years ago. I explained it to Rock above.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

but you explained it wrong! LOL Tim he signed a 5 year extension for the years 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24. FIVE YEARS. Last year was year one. We have not played this year so he still has not played 2 years of the extension. He has only played one year of the extension.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know that. I admitted my mistake. But it’s a fact he agreed on the extension two years ago. Is 2019 not two years ago? During that time other corners got paid more. That’s what his beef is. Can we move on? LOL

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    ————————————————————————
Leaving the legal part out of the matter, if you are the one with the statement of record, it being Bezo’s is a crook, you have the onus of validating that statement with facts to back it up, not try to turn the argument on the person that sayd, ok where’s your proof by saying ….”oh i don’t know, where is yours” thats the “i know you are but what am i” response of defending an argument. Basic principals of logical argument says David doesn’t have a good rebuttal so he played the I’m incapable of logical arguments so here’s my crazy defense.

Chris Grier was given the keys to tear it down and start over completely and Brian Flores was the guy he wanted to be the head coach of the new team. Here we are in year 3. That’s why i was pushing at one time for us to take him over dome of the true DE’s in this class because he is a perfect hybrid fit, and equally as athletic as any of them, this was a fairly shallow DE class.

Re: Howard, I read he’s still the #6 paid CB in the league. He really doesn’t have any leverage over us, but the way we handled Minkah F^cktard shows we don’t want to be in a protracted disgruntled player situation, so I expect we’ll either reach an agreement or we’ll see a trade sooner rather than later.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems a time to ask yourself, “how much better is Howard than Iggy” as well as “What can we get for Howard in a trade?” I don’t know what the answers are, but those are the Qs would be asking. Answer might come back give X more money….or not.

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree i think its heavy on the Phins side as far as the leverage. There will always be teams that will pay big for a top CB so if we get in a sticky situation we can still trade him. Im hoping not, and the Phins are able to reach a compromise deal, maybe incentive laden changes to his contract that can get him to the money he wants but i also dont want them to sink the team over it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That was different. Minkah F^cktard wanted to know is he a CB, FS or SS so he could build his body as such. Then his Mom chimed in. Howard most likely via his agent wants to be paid as the #1 CB.

X was 1st team All-Pro in 2020, 2nd team All-Pro in 2018 and a 2-time Pro Bowler those same years. He and his agent are looking to cash in, nothing more.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So if Howard holds out, do you think the team will react differently and let it be a season long nuisance?

My point was the team showed a no-nonsense attitude towards Minkah, I think they’ll do the same with Howard and either pay him or move him. Who cares what the player is disgruntled about, my statement was about how the team will handle it.

  87. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Also regarding Howard, when you sign an extension, that usually includes a reworking of the current year. 2019 was reworked as part of the new deal. Howard was paid over 15 mil in 2019, so Tim was sorta right, it was a 5 year extension, but really it was a new 6 year contract. He’s played 2 and is going into year 3 of the new contract.

We’ve obviously had a lot of talks and conversations about that and we’ll continue to have those and keep them internal, but it’s a very unique conversation.”

That is a very team friendly way to say it by the coach. The new contract was negotiated in 2019 and Howard got paid out of the new contract in 2019.

  88. he repeated unique, mmmm

it sounds like hes a little bit pissed off ,that they have to renegotiate again a year later

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Typically what happens is some upfront money will be paid in the last year of the old contract, but that doesn’t change the old contract or years of the new contract.

That’s only true when the old contract is torn up and the new one starts in the current year, that didn’t happen with Howard

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s a technicality for sure, but the reality is the player is now under contract for 6 years and the total money over those 6 years is also paid out over those 6 years combined.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

No matter how you look at it, we got him on a great deal (looking at how the top CB market has jumped). I wish we’d gotten one more year out of him before he decided to push the issue, but he knows he’ll never be hotter than he was last year.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe you are saying the same , but my impression was old contract same as before but when you sign the extension you get the signing bonus right after your John Hancock. So salary for that year the same but a check for millions.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        It’s what he’s saying, and it’s correct.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Does seem at that point they shouldn’t call it an extension. It’s a new contract. Or maybe a re-sign.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m really not disputing anything, you and Steve are right. I’m just showing a different perspective. Part of the reason for the extension is a player has outperformed the old contract (in this case a rookie contract), so you are getting the player money sooner.

  90. i want Howard on the team, hes a turnover machine, but im not happy hes holding out, one year after renegotiating what was a year ago the highest paid CB in the league

annual raises? wow, imagine if Dan Marino held out after he was destroying the record books

Howard is a great player, but hes not a NFL record breaker

most ints in a season is 14

X was 1st team All-Pro in 2020, 2nd team All-Pro in 2018 and a 2-time Pro Bowler those same years. He and his agent are looking to cash in, nothing more. It’s a business guys.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m pretty sure everyone here gets the why of it. The reason most fans (at least on this board) aren’t lining up on his side, is because he just cashed in on a new contract 2 years ago. You know the thing we’ve been taking about, lol.

  92. Lions have expressed some interest in Howard earlier, and the rumours are still out there

Dan Campbell is, never mind, we know who he is, but because hes a defensive minded coach it could be a good fit for Howard

he would get all the millions he wants there, guaranteed starter, and be the anchor for a young and unproven secondary in Detroit

if the fins had to trade him, we should get a first round pick and a second, or no dice, IMO

there isnt anyone in the draft that has a skill set like Howard, thats rare and at best would need time to develop

we would need multiple picks/players to get fair value, if a trade was done

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dan Campbell was a TE. Yes he likes physical football but not sure how he’s defensive minded coach.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think when you have a talent like Howard you work it out. The Aaron Rodgers situation is different. He’s been there since 2005 as an elite QB, not a 2016 CB.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think turnover machines are hard to come by, so even though I’m not keen on his pushing for a new contract this year, I’d try to make it happen. If he wants 20 mil per, see ya!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’d offer a contract just over Jones’, so he’s the highest paid on the team, but that’s me, lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Me personally, I’d pay him. It’s not going to be so much more. Our style of defense is built around man coverage and Howard is one of the best. We’re in year 3 of the rebuild (LOL), gearing up to compete now, not in 2-3 years from now.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The greater people think Howard is….. the greater his trade value is. That is part of the equation.

  94. we dont even know what Howard wants, he might want $30 million or more per season

his new agent is infamous for being very greedy and difficult to work with,
but players like those kind of agents, so they can hold out, and stick it to the team for more than the team can really afford

  95. interceptions are costly to opponents offenses, and even more costly to the team payroll

imagine Howard getting 2-3 million, every time he picks a ball off, lol

we see INTS and think of what they mean to a football game, but it works out to millions of dollars for an interception to the team, WOW

even worse, if he has a bad season, and has 5 ints, i dont suppose he will return some of the money, team still has to pay big bucks for half as many picks

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not just about INTs. There are many games where the WR against Howard have games like 2-19, 3-37 etc. He shuts them down. He’s our Revis. Players on the team have said I have no idea why they keep challenging him. 🙂

      • how much is that worth to the team? how much can the fins afford to pay?

this problem was made much worse for overpaying for Jones IMO

if we overpay for Howard, whats going to happen next year?

im feeling the team already has a number, and that number wont get exceeded no matter what,

because when all is said and done, the team needs to pay the other 52 players that will all be hoping to beat out the Howard contract someday
