Jaelan Phillips – Difference maker?

The Dolphins went offense first in the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle with the 6th pick. Is it possible that the next pick, at #18 was even more important to the team’s success in 2021? I believe it is. I think Phillips changes this defense, legitimizes this defense. This defense was close to being elite last season, I think Phillips can put us over the top. We need a true pass rushing threat to allow Emmanuel Ogbah to grow from his excellent 2020 campaign. Shaq Lawson wasn’t enough, and I’ll illustrate why.

Emmanuel Ogbah was tearing it up, he had 8 sacks in the first 9 games last season. Then they decided to take Ogbah out of the picture by double teaming him and w/o any threat from the other side, it lasted the rest of the season with Ogbah managing only 1 sack in the final 7 games, after accumulating 8 in the first 9. Let me be clear, it’s not about Ogbah, it’s about having multiple threats that need to be accounted for by the opposing offense. If Phillips makes an early impact then it will give everyone a chance because it’s a pick your poison type of situation. If they double Ogbah, Phillips will make them pay, and vice versa. Again, this affects everyone though, because this will allow everyone to succeed, including AVG, Baker, McKinney, Wilkins, Davis etc.

So, the question is, will Jaelan Phillips be the difference maker? He had a very incomplete college career due to injuries. Both ankles, and a couple of concussions ruined his Freshman and Sophomore seasons and he actually skipped a year (2019) and transferred from UCLA to Miami in 2020. He had a very nice season for the Hurricanes but that’s the bulk of his college career, one nice season. What seems to be the cumulative scouting report is he’s a gifted defensive player that can play either 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB and his talent and size would allow him to do either well. He has a legitimate pass rush repertoire, and his combination of length, power and speed make him difficult to contain. It seems the biggest concerns are his medicals (concussions). There are also mentions that he needs to improve his core strength and bulk, things they also said about Jason Taylor. He certainly has an incomplete resume, but the talent is clearly there, he was the #1 rated recruit at DE in the country by 247 Sports, who basically set the table for college recruiting. The ankle injuries themselves aren’t a concern and the kid has played through pain. The concussions are the demon that could quickly ruin a player as we saw when we picked up TE Jordan Cameron from the Cleveland Browns. To be fair, there were at least 4 or 5 documented concussions for Cameron and from what I’ve seen, just 2 for Phillips. The Dolphins rolled the dice, and I like the action. I think Phillips is going to be huge for us, can’t wait to see him in our defense!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Good article and point to bring up MikeE. For me, Phillips is a boom or bust type player. Though it will be due to injury and not ability

I don’t want t bring up the discussion of X being a bitch about his contract and whether he is worth it or not. Just going to bring up a trade possibility if it gets to that point.

M13 had a good trade scenario. I was thinking, with his injury history and fact he is not considered the #1 CB in the NFL by many, he won’t garner a 1st round pick unless by itself.

I read an article that brought this trade scenario up. What if we traded X to Detroit for their second round pick which could be around #34 to #39 and DE Trey Flowers? Flowers is solid in run D and pass rush which got him his huge contract in Detroit. He played in our system his entire career and knows it inside and out from playing under Flores/Patricia in NE his 1st three seasons and then Patricia in Detroit the last 2 seasons. He did get injured last season but is fine and had nothing to do with his knees or legs. Before last season, he averaged 7 sacks a season, 30 sacks and 9 FF in 67 games played.

Some of his 2021 base salary is guaranteed, so if I am not mistaken, Detroit would be on the hook for some of his 14 mil this season. After that, he comes at a hit of 16 mil per in 2022 and 2023 but could be restructured.

Ogbah will be a F/A next year and will demand much more money. Let him ball out this year for that last big contract and get us a nice comp pick.

    Just a thought.

More I think about it, I really like Ogbah though. Wonder how much his camp is asking for? In just one season in this defense he had more production than Flowers ever had in any season in this system. Sheesh, what to do…

Detroit wouldn’t be on the hook for his 2021 contract, unless it was worked into the trade.

In general the team trading for a player is on the hook for current year’s salary, with the guarantee only coming into the equation, if the player is cut.

    Cutting team responsible for guarantees

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Could we possibly make it work by trading X for the above and restructuring Flowers and resigning Ogbah?

That would be a very good DE group!

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Shaq Lawson wasn’t enough. LOL

Was watching some highlights and here comes Lawson jogging into the backfield with no blocker near him.

WFT Shaq? Sack the fn QB

I agree Mike, and don’t care who gets the sacks, Lawson wasn’t a pass rusher

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

But then again on 3rd down, when we’re in the amoeba, and they don’t know who is coming, they have to single block everyone.

Where was Ogbah in that situation?

Most likely though the QB had no clue who was coming and just got rid of it

I was all ready to do the Raiders game last year till everything got derailed. I’ll have to look at if we can time it right this year. We’re probably going to hit Hawaii instead of Miami, the ladies of the house have just about beat all the fight out of me on that one, lol.

But that means I can do Vegas if I want. We’ll probably leave for Hawaii late Sept or early Oct. We’re going to book our flights soon, so I’ll know in the next couple of weeks. If we do it right, we could do a hop down to Vegas for a day or two, catch the game, then head to Hawaii straight from there.

Mike E — Awesome write on Jaelan Phillips and how he fits.

6 ft 5 266 lb, fast, athletic and a 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE tweener. Think that Jason Taylor comparison is going to follow him his whole Phins career, or at least hope it will. And seems a great fit for this defense that can pretty much line up like anything on any give play.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Thanks Stanger

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I also think AVG will be fun to watch this season, Remember he put up some solid stats last year with limited playing time. Will he be able to do more with more playing time or is it the good relief pitcher who struggled to be stretched out as a starter?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems a big reason Kyle Van Noy was let go was cause they liked what we have in AVG. Better play per snap. Then they traded Lawson and beefed up the middle with Benardrick McKinney in exchange.

And then drafted Phillips. He may line up where Van Noy was but different beast. even if on the other side….. AVG will be that guy.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think the Buffalo game changed everything.

KVN and Lawson weren’t the answer, and unlike previous FOs, they cut their losses.

KVN was on a 1 yr 15m contract, with club option for more years at 12.5 per, which turned out to be a good deal for both sides

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The difference is JT was not in the 260’s when he was drafted, he was 235.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

JT was white whale undersized even given guys were smaller then. And 266 after drinking water at the weigh in is a bit light for a DE today. So yeah see a similarity.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips is bigger than JT was. He’s also not really a pure DE like we used to think of them. Edge rushers are a new species and most of them are now in the 245-265 range. Kind of like when lots of teams played the 3-4 and the OLBs were the edge rushers. Now they use these guys in all sorts of ways.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

RIght — but JT played DE end for us for years. Only went what we would call an edge rusher today when we went from 4-3 to 3-4.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah JT was special. I was just saying that he wasn’t as big coming out of college and played most of his career at 245 (his words). Phillips has a lot of plays to make before he can be mentioned with JT.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was just saying based on what have read see the same type of player, not saying Phillips should buy a 2032 plane ticket to Canton. People do that with draft picks all the time. If you don’t see JT what would your comparison be for Phillips?

  12. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Boom or bust seems to be the running theme for our entire roster.

  13. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Mike E,

Great article and he’s the rook I’m most excited over. He has the talent and our defense seems tailor made to help him exploit the OL. Having AVG, McKinley and others here should also help him and Ogbah.

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Would assume AVG is going to be given every opportunity to get more snaps, but even if he plays the same amount of snaps as last year and performs the same he’s still an asset.

We’ve got enough depth at LB, that none of them have to be something they aren’t.

Even Baker last year had a stretch, where he didn’t play much, because of the matchup.

Lots of different looks with different players is the key

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write, Mike. I just touched on Phillips last night that along with McKinney and Holland they could take the defense to another level.

  16. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Do we have a LB who can’t rush the passer?
    Phillips and AVG sure can.
    Baker’s size doesn’t scream it.
    But he’s a speed missile.
    Got 7 sacks last year.
    Benardrick McKinney is the Q,
Not many sacks in his past.
    But he’s got the size.
And he’s never played in this D.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Baker is a really good blitzer. But he also excels in coverage so we probably don’t want to blitz him too often. McKinney has 11.5 sacks in his career. He mostly played inside with Houston but they moved him around as well at times. He’s not a pure pass rusher but he can blitz too. We’ll see if Biegel is fully healed from his Achilles injury. He was starting to come on in 2019 just like AVG did last year. He lead the team in QB pressures.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

11.5 sacks in 6 seasons….. hence what I said about him and why asked the top question. But might be that McKinney is not a 3-down guy for us and hasn’t been in the past. Means less opportunities. But he’s never been in this scheme either.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can’t really say for sure how Houston used McKinney other than as an ILB because I didn’t follow his career. But he has a ton of tackles – 530 in 6 years, while only playing in 4 games last year so that cuts into those average stats. He’s basically a 100 tackles per year guy. Did it 3 times and one other he had 95. We’ll see what his role is in our defense. Looking forward to it.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

From what have seen…. real happy we have McKinney. Just wasn’t sure if he’s be a pass rusher for us, or if would be out there on 3rd down passing situations for that matter. We have four real impressive LBs , but tend to play a lot of DBs then. So who comes out? Least don’t think will be Phillips or Baker.

mf13ss….you did say you supported RW and in your respone to Newage you white-washed your support of him.

Balls to walls, newage was throwing shit around and you smeared in it instead of standing up for RW who is your pen pal.

It was a weak endorsement and you did not defend him.

I am not that kind of person. Can you umderstand me now?
    ———————–
I’m a very understanding individual, Krishna. I can understand how some people (such as New Age) feel that Ricky was/is a quitter, and I didn’t become unglued as you did: it’s alright to disagree and to be civil. What’s more, I really like what New Age has to say about things here.

I do understand you now (thank you for the clarity) but it’s not my job to be Ricky’s personal defender or bodyguard on any given blog site. Nor do I have the ability to change everybody’s mind on everything I may personally disagree upon. Knowing Ricky, he’d have given me a high-five for not allowing something I can’t control to get under my skin.

Now if someone was dissing Ricky to his face? I’d have defended him as a matter of honor… that’s a different thing altogether than what we’re discussing, man… on a random chat on a random blog, and Ricky’s never going to read it. HUGE difference.

To repeat, I was merely telling New Age that I can understand where he and others are coming from… I didn’t endorse his opinion, nor did I personally stab Ricky in the back in saying as much. I was very polite to all until you jumped me about this. It’s water under the bridge to me now.

Respectfully, I hope you understand where I’m coming from as well, sir.

    Mike E,

Another good write, bud. As you clearly illustrated, you’ve got to have pressure from both sides/ends of the Defense… FACT. Hopefully, Ogbah and Phillips can be our new JT and Ogunleye.

    GO PHINS!!!

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I’ve heard people compare Phillips to JT but I mostly think that is because we drafted him so we compare him to former Dolphins and JT is the best one as an edge rusher. I’ve been saying Phillips reminds me of DeMarcus Ware before we drafted him. But that doesn’t really matter, I hope he’s his own guy and we got a good one. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Phillips plays like DeMarcus Ware and I am cool with it. Truthfully don’t know enough about his playing style to compare to Phillips, but know he’s awesome good. And a bit on the light side.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ware is listed at 6-4 258 so light DE/big OLB. That’s how I view Phillips.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So maybe Phillips plays like Ware or maybe he ends up down the road as the Joker. 🙂

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, as far as who comes out when go heavy DB I think it depends on what scheme is being called. I would think McKinney would come out in that situation most of the time.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

As do I. And it is not really an exceptional thing. Teams play at least the nickle about half the time. Means a LB goes out even when you are playing a 3-man front.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah but we use those Amoeba fronts with sometimes 1 or 2 DL then a mix of LBs and DBs all moving around so the offense doesn’t know what we’re doing. So McKinney could play in those roles too because he can run and he’s got a long frame. I think just like we have been seeing, we’ll use a lot of mix and match personnel groupings.

  21. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    MF13,

Thanks for the kind words. I also don’t think I dissed Ricky. I like the person and player but he didn’t follow the rules and that cost him. It’s no big deal but it does seem to still bother him. Actions have consequences even for good guys. I think he’ll be ok just like you do. You’re a good guy as well

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You’re very welcome, sir! I don’t think you dissed Ricky at all, you had a mere opinion… and opinions are welcome.

mike, to set up the run with the pass you have to stretch the field.
going by last years stats tua was 31st in deep balls completing just 3 out of 17 att beyond 20 yards.
what tua needs is a very strong running game to set up the pass.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Last year was last year. I expect him, along with the offense to be much different, and I expect him to play much differently than last year. He won’t be as cautious as he was last year and the better talent will bear that out.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree. He was playing with mostly backups last half of the season and no speed except for Grant who couldn’t catch the ball. We have speed all over the place now who can catch the damn ball.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. I expect the entire offense to make a jump this year. Tua is also in better physical shape and a year under his belt should help like with most rookies.

The OL is still where all of this starts. To throw deep, you need time for the routes to develop. But with the speed we can throw out there, I can’t see teams stacking the box on us so the running game should have more favorable matchups and the deep throws will be there.

If you start cutting criminals slack bc they are morons, you are gonna have a lot of slack to cut – that doesn’t make the damage they could have caused more detrimental. It’s much worse to take away the value of my vote than to be weak on crime

Ignoring the riot, murder and burning in the capitol is not exactly a viable approach to cracking down on

Brian Sicknick, a capitol police officer was assaulted and died the next day of a stroke

There were two pipe bombs found. I guess that’s more of an explosion than a burn. Pointless distinction noted.

There was a guy with zip ties ready to take hostages. There were armed people entering and exiting as demonstrated by the indictments

        There were countless assaults

Party of law and order though….

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Sicknick’s stroke was caused by his health. He was assaulted tho.

I don’t think they have yet determined who placed the pipe bombs. Just as likely to have been antifa or some counter protest group. So still open.

One dude had some zip ties…who knows if they were for hostages or for counter-protestors as he claimed.

Stun guns, pepper spray, baseball bats and flagpoles wielded as clubs – those are the “weapons” for which people have been indicted. Now there’s a recipe for overthrow.

Dem rioters were some of the worst insurrectionists I’ve ever heard of. Didn’t even manage to set an office trash can on fire.

Here’s a list of many of the 1/t/21 indictments
        https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/capitol-breach-cases

There are many minor offenses, there are many big ones or like conspiracy, assault possession of a firearm and ammo (guess they weren’t all unarmed yokels on an unscheduled tour of the capitol)

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think they should face charges for what they did. And many are – charges that amount to trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Why do you need an investigation to figure out there was a riot? That’s what happened – they rioted. No boogeyman to blame – mobs have a mob mentality. That’s why they’re called mobs. The FBI is investigating the individuals involved. The commission is just a whip to keep the democratic base frothing, just like Trump kept his base frothing with claims of election fraud.

Four instances of firearms indictments – Only one was actually on the Capitol grounds. The other three were in different parts of the city. One of them missed the whole riot. One of them was arrested in Texas and the firearms charge was levied because his son told the FBI that he took guns to the Capitol. The suspect said he took a pistol to DC but it was disassembled and not on him when he was on the Capitol grounds.

This is Democrat deflection and hypocrisy. The ones who turned a blind eye to all the 2020 riots, murder, looting and arson calling the protests “mostly peaceful” but totally and only focused on 1/6/21.

Your VP raised money to post bond immediately and retain criminal defense attorney’s for the rioters, looters and arsonists. Quite a few of the 1/6/21 people have been in jail for 6 months and being held without bond and don’t even have a court date.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Are you joking?

Liz Cheney was removed from her position as House Conference Chair for her positions on 1/6/21 by a majority of republicans….not 1 or 2. Not a handful. The majority of republicans in congress voted to remove her. If you don’t recall that, you are not paying attention

The cartoon we are commenting is clearly inferring that democrats are too busy looking at 1/6/21 to see crime in citites. If you don’t recall that, you aren’t thinking.

It’s not hypocrisy. They aren’t equals. One of them is a one day event that sought to stop the certification of the election results which would undermine the purpose of voting at all and the foundation of this country. The other is a generalization of increased crime in multiple of our largest cities over a 2 year period.

I don’t know why anyone thinks these two things should be mentioned in the same sentences when they are nothing a like and doesn’t recognize how nonsensical that argument is – but anytime 1/6/21 comes up…it’s a queue for a new bad faith argument like that

It’s literally saying don’t look here, look here instead. It’s not subtle. Please don’t bullshit to me about it.

None of you have ever offered solutions to crimes in city. You use it to distract from other crimes.

What is the great republican solution to reduce crime? 🤷🏽‍♂️
But Some members of “the squad” said defund police and I hate that so republicans have it all figured out now I guess…
Wtf kind of logic is that

Also your description of what Harris did is completely inaccurate but it doesn’t matter to you anyway

I don’t know how to make this more clear to you. You aren’t going to tit for tat with me about other things you think are bad to excuse treason

Treason is still the worst thing you can do in America to me and that’s what occurred on 1/6/21

And if you guys downplay it the way you are, you are just going to have to deal with scrappiness on the subject

What happened on 1/6/21 was the worst thing to occur in our country in my lifetime. I am personally ashamed that so many people think it’s nothing

One day, when a republican wins an election, and a bunch of liberals are arguing that they should do the same thing, and people like me shoot down their ideas and stupidity and favor their full prosecution, it might make sense to you what sort of horrible precedent 1/6/21 has set and the value of standing against it.

The whole thing crumbles when you say 1/6/21 was okay or downplay how bad it is. Nothing compares. Nothing.

It already happened. How quick democrats forget when President Trump had to be evacuated to the White House bunker last year when the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers struggled to contain crowds of rioters throwing rocks and frozen water bottles and trying to pull/tear down the barricades.

Is it not treasonous to try and attack the White House and a serving President? I guess not if you’re a Democrat. Wonder how many were arrested for this treasonous act? All I hear are crickets….

Hmmm, what would have happened if they succeeded? I guess they would have just quit once they got through the barricade.

Luckily that didn’t happen. The White House had to be reinforced with the National Guard troops, additional Secret Service agents and even U.S. Park Police. That was not even enough as they had to be augmented with agents from the U.S. Marshalls Service and DEA.

Swift ain’t so tough. Stevie Nicks was tough.Taylor just sings about her exes. Stevie made her get on stage and play guitar while she sang about him.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Her not being so tough was why said smart move is just make her go away instead of attack. Huge following. And passionate. Types that would not vote for the woman who attacks her.

Fortunately that audience is mostly 16 year olds and can’t vote. Unless some of the Dems get their way.

My wife is hardly 16, but least seems some like her are eligible to vote.

Be careful talking about your wife’s age, stangerx! Don’t let pp mess with you.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My wife is 50 and looks like she is 40, to me at least. Have no problem putting that out.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Your wife is beautiful, stangerx!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks Krishna. I agree, but then sorta have too. 🙂

    Maybe so, TK.

For me, it’s the mud slinging and political hate-speak. Each blames the other and neither looks in the mirror. It’s both for fuck’s sake. Just stop it!!!!

I read that Pussy Riot wears balaclava to cover their faces when they perform and I thought “That’s very unique, I’d never think of wearing a dessert pastry as a disguise.”

    ….ohhh, balaclava, not baklava

Stanger, politicians on both sides lose potential supporters based on saying stupid shit. They create the divide and continue to widen it. I think both parties need to be blown up and start over. I know it won’t happen, but that’s how I feel. They are so entrenched in their ideology that they turn the majority of people off. So citizens have to choose the lesser of two evils. It’s fucked up!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s why you look for the good ones. 20 senators from both parties negotiated the infrastructure deal that hopefully will pass and couldn’t get done by the leaders on both sides after giving it a whack. Those are the good ones.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When the radical ideologies are more important than the good of all people, I’m out. The problem is it’s entrenched in every friggin thing in life. It’s become absurd.

20 out of 100 is not good odds!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Krishna — why over the years have contributed to the good ones have found along the way. Last year not much cause only Susan Collins. And she was in a tight race predicted to lose, yet won. Yeah was one of those 20.

stangerx, the hardest thing for me at this fest is going to be missing Mrs. K mingling with all you fucktard’s wives and having a great time! She was a little worried the first time after seeing some of the shit that is said on this blog. LOL!
