The Dolphins went offense first in the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle with the 6th pick. Is it possible that the next pick, at #18 was even more important to the team’s success in 2021? I believe it is. I think Phillips changes this defense, legitimizes this defense. This defense was close to being elite last season, I think Phillips can put us over the top. We need a true pass rushing threat to allow Emmanuel Ogbah to grow from his excellent 2020 campaign. Shaq Lawson wasn’t enough, and I’ll illustrate why.
Emmanuel Ogbah was tearing it up, he had 8 sacks in the first 9 games last season. Then they decided to take Ogbah out of the picture by double teaming him and w/o any threat from the other side, it lasted the rest of the season with Ogbah managing only 1 sack in the final 7 games, after accumulating 8 in the first 9. Let me be clear, it’s not about Ogbah, it’s about having multiple threats that need to be accounted for by the opposing offense. If Phillips makes an early impact then it will give everyone a chance because it’s a pick your poison type of situation. If they double Ogbah, Phillips will make them pay, and vice versa. Again, this affects everyone though, because this will allow everyone to succeed, including AVG, Baker, McKinney, Wilkins, Davis etc.
So, the question is, will Jaelan Phillips be the difference maker? He had a very incomplete college career due to injuries. Both ankles, and a couple of concussions ruined his Freshman and Sophomore seasons and he actually skipped a year (2019) and transferred from UCLA to Miami in 2020. He had a very nice season for the Hurricanes but that’s the bulk of his college career, one nice season. What seems to be the cumulative scouting report is he’s a gifted defensive player that can play either 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB and his talent and size would allow him to do either well. He has a legitimate pass rush repertoire, and his combination of length, power and speed make him difficult to contain. It seems the biggest concerns are his medicals (concussions). There are also mentions that he needs to improve his core strength and bulk, things they also said about Jason Taylor. He certainly has an incomplete resume, but the talent is clearly there, he was the #1 rated recruit at DE in the country by 247 Sports, who basically set the table for college recruiting. The ankle injuries themselves aren’t a concern and the kid has played through pain. The concussions are the demon that could quickly ruin a player as we saw when we picked up TE Jordan Cameron from the Cleveland Browns. To be fair, there were at least 4 or 5 documented concussions for Cameron and from what I’ve seen, just 2 for Phillips. The Dolphins rolled the dice, and I like the action. I think Phillips is going to be huge for us, can’t wait to see him in our defense!

I don’t want t bring up the discussion of X being a bitch about his contract and whether he is worth it or not. Just going to bring up a trade possibility if it gets to that point.
M13 had a good trade scenario. I was thinking, with his injury history and fact he is not considered the #1 CB in the NFL by many, he won’t garner a 1st round pick unless by itself.
I read an article that brought this trade scenario up. What if we traded X to Detroit for their second round pick which could be around #34 to #39 and DE Trey Flowers? Flowers is solid in run D and pass rush which got him his huge contract in Detroit. He played in our system his entire career and knows it inside and out from playing under Flores/Patricia in NE his 1st three seasons and then Patricia in Detroit the last 2 seasons. He did get injured last season but is fine and had nothing to do with his knees or legs. Before last season, he averaged 7 sacks a season, 30 sacks and 9 FF in 67 games played.
Some of his 2021 base salary is guaranteed, so if I am not mistaken, Detroit would be on the hook for some of his 14 mil this season. After that, he comes at a hit of 16 mil per in 2022 and 2023 but could be restructured.
Ogbah will be a F/A next year and will demand much more money. Let him ball out this year for that last big contract and get us a nice comp pick.

Detroit wouldn’t be on the hook for his 2021 contract, unless it was worked into the trade.
In general the team trading for a player is on the hook for current year’s salary, with the guarantee only coming into the equation, if the player is cut.

But that means I can do Vegas if I want. We’ll probably leave for Hawaii late Sept or early Oct. We’re going to book our flights soon, so I’ll know in the next couple of weeks. If we do it right, we could do a hop down to Vegas for a day or two, catch the game, then head to Hawaii straight from there.

6 ft 5 266 lb, fast, athletic and a 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE tweener. Think that Jason Taylor comparison is going to follow him his whole Phins career, or at least hope it will. And seems a great fit for this defense that can pretty much line up like anything on any give play.

Seems a big reason Kyle Van Noy was let go was cause they liked what we have in AVG. Better play per snap. Then they traded Lawson and beefed up the middle with Benardrick McKinney in exchange.
And then drafted Phillips. He may line up where Van Noy was but different beast. even if on the other side….. AVG will be that guy.
Think the Buffalo game changed everything.
KVN and Lawson weren’t the answer, and unlike previous FOs, they cut their losses.
KVN was on a 1 yr 15m contract, with club option for more years at 12.5 per, which turned out to be a good deal for both sides
The difference is JT was not in the 260’s when he was drafted, he was 235.
JT was white whale undersized even given guys were smaller then. And 266 after drinking water at the weigh in is a bit light for a DE today. So yeah see a similarity.
Phillips is bigger than JT was. He’s also not really a pure DE like we used to think of them. Edge rushers are a new species and most of them are now in the 245-265 range. Kind of like when lots of teams played the 3-4 and the OLBs were the edge rushers. Now they use these guys in all sorts of ways.
RIght — but JT played DE end for us for years. Only went what we would call an edge rusher today when we went from 4-3 to 3-4.
Yeah JT was special. I was just saying that he wasn’t as big coming out of college and played most of his career at 245 (his words). Phillips has a lot of plays to make before he can be mentioned with JT.

Would assume AVG is going to be given every opportunity to get more snaps, but even if he plays the same amount of snaps as last year and performs the same he’s still an asset.
We’ve got enough depth at LB, that none of them have to be something they aren’t.
Even Baker last year had a stretch, where he didn’t play much, because of the matchup.
Lots of different looks with different players is the key

But he’s a speed missile.

Benardrick McKinney is the Q,
Not many sacks in his past.
But he’s got the size.
And he’s never played in this D.
Baker is a really good blitzer. But he also excels in coverage so we probably don’t want to blitz him too often. McKinney has 11.5 sacks in his career. He mostly played inside with Houston but they moved him around as well at times. He’s not a pure pass rusher but he can blitz too. We’ll see if Biegel is fully healed from his Achilles injury. He was starting to come on in 2019 just like AVG did last year. He lead the team in QB pressures.
11.5 sacks in 6 seasons….. hence what I said about him and why asked the top question. But might be that McKinney is not a 3-down guy for us and hasn’t been in the past. Means less opportunities. But he’s never been in this scheme either.
I can’t really say for sure how Houston used McKinney other than as an ILB because I didn’t follow his career. But he has a ton of tackles – 530 in 6 years, while only playing in 4 games last year so that cuts into those average stats. He’s basically a 100 tackles per year guy. Did it 3 times and one other he had 95. We’ll see what his role is in our defense. Looking forward to it.
From what have seen…. real happy we have McKinney. Just wasn’t sure if he’s be a pass rusher for us, or if would be out there on 3rd down passing situations for that matter. We have four real impressive LBs , but tend to play a lot of DBs then. So who comes out? Least don’t think will be Phillips or Baker.

Stanger, I’ve heard people compare Phillips to JT but I mostly think that is because we drafted him so we compare him to former Dolphins and JT is the best one as an edge rusher. I’ve been saying Phillips reminds me of DeMarcus Ware before we drafted him. But that doesn’t really matter, I hope he’s his own guy and we got a good one. 🙂
Phillips plays like DeMarcus Ware and I am cool with it. Truthfully don’t know enough about his playing style to compare to Phillips, but know he’s awesome good. And a bit on the light side.
Ware is listed at 6-4 258 so light DE/big OLB. That’s how I view Phillips.
So maybe Phillips plays like Ware or maybe he ends up down the road as the Joker. 🙂
Stanger, as far as who comes out when go heavy DB I think it depends on what scheme is being called. I would think McKinney would come out in that situation most of the time.
As do I. And it is not really an exceptional thing. Teams play at least the nickle about half the time. Means a LB goes out even when you are playing a 3-man front.
Yeah but we use those Amoeba fronts with sometimes 1 or 2 DL then a mix of LBs and DBs all moving around so the offense doesn’t know what we’re doing. So McKinney could play in those roles too because he can run and he’s got a long frame. I think just like we have been seeing, we’ll use a lot of mix and match personnel groupings.

going by last years stats tua was 31st in deep balls completing just 3 out of 17 att beyond 20 yards.
what tua needs is a very strong running game to set up the pass.
Last year was last year. I expect him, along with the offense to be much different, and I expect him to play much differently than last year. He won’t be as cautious as he was last year and the better talent will bear that out.
I agree. He was playing with mostly backups last half of the season and no speed except for Grant who couldn’t catch the ball. We have speed all over the place now who can catch the damn ball.
Agreed. I expect the entire offense to make a jump this year. Tua is also in better physical shape and a year under his belt should help like with most rookies.
The OL is still where all of this starts. To throw deep, you need time for the routes to develop. But with the speed we can throw out there, I can’t see teams stacking the box on us so the running game should have more favorable matchups and the deep throws will be there.

One of them was arrested in Texas and the firearms charge was levied because his son told the FBI that he took guns to the Capitol. The suspect said he took a pistol to DC but it was disassembled and not on him when he was on the Capitol grounds.

So what did I learn today? The response to the 1-6 Capitol takeover was bad is that the George Floyd riots were bad and vice versa. Well they were both bad. Don’t see what the issue is.

Sometimes young teams all of a sudden have the right stuff and they emerge ahead of what is expected. We’ve done that both years under Flores during a rebuild. Now we’ve got better personnel. I absolutely think we can be at the top of the league in the next few years. A lot of that has to do with the confidence I have in a lot of our players and coaching staff.
I would like to see them take significant steps this year and reserve judgement until the end of this year. I have very hopeful they will.
I have pretty much sat back and watched the show, i.e. what management has done since the end of last season. It’s been impressive, imo. I don’t disagree with any of their decisions and love the culture being built, more than anything.
