PRESEASON GAME 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Wow, so pumped just to be typing the words preseason game 1. COVID-19 wrecked any opportunity to have any preseason at all last year, but this season, we not only get THREE preseason games but we also get an extra regular season game to make it 20 games in total! OK, so preseason isn’t all that, but to me, It’s game action against another team, and I personally believe it’s essential. Practice is practice, against your own guys, but when you face a different team, guys will bring more effort and the competition sparks a little extra than you get in practice. We have such a young team, I think they will benefit from having played these 3 meaningless games. You can laugh all you want at this but Tua not having training camp and preseason games did him no favors last year.

First and foremost we need to come out of the preseason healthy. There are injuries in practice, there are injuries in preseason games and there are injuries in regular season games, but you never want to lose a player before the real season begins. There will be some interesting competitions to watch, not only for starting spots but for roster spots too. There are always surprise cuts and sometimes there are surprises as to who makes the starting roster and this year will be no different. At least this year with training camp, minicamp and the preseason, players will have had a chance to show what they can do and the evaluation process should also be easier for the coaching staff.

I think the most interesting battle in my opinion is the O-line. This is where there is the least rotation and the starting 5 usually get the greater majority of snaps. As of now, the line is as so . . .

LT Jackson

LG Eichenberg

C Deiter

RG Hunt

RT Davis

I’m not buying this, and I believe by the time the season starts it will either be Eichenberg or Hunt at RT. If it’s Hunt then maybe Eichenberg stays at LG, but if Eichenberg gets the RT spot, I think Kindley settles back in at LG. We know the 3 starting DL in the 3-4 alignment are going to be Wilkins, Davis and Ogbah. I think we also know the 4 starting LB’s in that same 3-4 are AVG, McKinney, Baker and Phillips. I know Phillips has had a slow start and it’s possible he may not start the season the season there but I also know they will give him every opportunity to make it happen. With Howard getting his extension we know it will be Howard and Jones, but then the safety battle will be an interesting one. I think Eric Rowe is safe at SS, but does the wily veteran McCourty start the season at FS, or does 2nd year man Brandon Jones get the nod or does the rookie who looked great against the Bears in practice, Jevon Holland steal that spot?

On offense, I feel like health will determine who starts at the skill positions, WR, TE and RB. If healthy, Parker, Fuller and Wilson, all veterans will “start”. There will be tons of opportunities for the others though and that’s where it comes down to the roster crunch. We know Waddle makes 4, so does that leave 2 more spots or 3? Hollins is the gunner on special teams and that’s an important factor as to why he might make the team as he’s a good one. Grant is an electric returner, a playmaker but his suspect hands (on returns and as a WR) may leave him off the roster. What about Lynn Bowden Jr.? We gave up a 4th RD pick last season to acquire Bowden and he showed some promise, especially late in the season. It would be hard to let him go so if we keep 7 WR’s, all of the above should be in. That means veteran Allen Hurns, Robert Foster, Kirk Merritt, Isaiah Ford, Malcolm Perry all gone but a couple may end up on the PS.

Oh, by the way, Gesicki is back! Can’t wait to see him back in action and watch him get his well deserved new contract! So Hunter Long is NOT gone for the season, that’s also great news! That should leave Gesicki, Shaheen, and either Smythe, Carter or Myarick to go along with Long as the 4th TE. At RB, Gaskin is the lead back followed by Malcolm Brown, Ahmed, Scarlet, Laird and Doaks. Hey, what happened to world beater Doaks you were all telling me about? Sorry, had to get that out! I’m guessing we’ll carry 5, maybe 6 so Doaks has a chance to make the roster. We no longer officially have a FB, so we might carry 6 RB’s.

The game is on NFLN tomorrow afternoon at 1PM. I will record it as I will be working unfortunately, but I’ll get around to watching it at some point, I may stay away from this blog so it won’t spoil the viewing. Enjoy the game, it will be nice to see some of our exciting rookie prospects suit up for the first time, and see the growth of our 2nd year QB. Looking forward to it!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    Steve,

In my opinion harassing the local grocer, or forcing the teenage manager of Chipotle to confront you for not following the rules, that is a child’s response that does nothing other than salve your own ego, although I do grant you it is better than rioting and looting.

If you (and I mean ‘you’ in the general sense, not you specifically) feel that way, have the strength of your convictions, go down to your local seat of government, and enter the board chambers without a mask in protest. But most people won’t do that because it’s inconvenient, or there might actually be consequences. It’s crap IMO.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Of course it’s crap, didn’t say it was right, just saying why they’re doing it.

When you have something to lose, these subtle methods are used, when you don’t the methods of the left are used

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’d guess that the number of people that riot and loot in ‘protest’ vs ‘I wanna get free shyte’ is probably an accurate reflection in ratio of the number of people that refuse to wear a mask in ‘protest’ vs ’cause I don’t wanna’. The vast majority of both are just doing what they want to do because they are children, lol.

I’ll stop with the mask posts now, lol, I mostly just wanted to show support to Mike. I’m thankful I’m not in a service industry.

Mike E — do feel sorry for you my man. Like always do for the gate agent that people yell at when a flight is canceled. Wasn’t the gate agent’s fault.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We likely all do, that’s why you don’t take it out on a clerk or non manager or someone that doesn’t have the power to do something about it

UGH, I feel like garbage today. Wife and I drank several pitchers of homemade watermelon margaritas by the pool yesterday while I smoked some ribs and chicken. Needless to say, I overcooked everything. lol All the meat is falling off the bone. Think I will just make rib meat tacos with coleslaw today. I smoked a pack of chicken wings, 2 fryer chickens, 2 racks of babyback ribs and 20 bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers. That will probably feed us until Sunday. lol

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think the “mandate” of wearing a mask to some may feel like an infringement of their constitutional rights.
I think if you have an establishment open to the public and a person comes in; if it’s your policy to require a mask, they refuse and you kick them out due to that, your company may be in for a lawsuit’
however if it’s the law, then you have every right have it enforced.

not sure where “mandate” stands between law and policy though?
    policy is not law.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s a state law, like any other law. Not sure which part you don’t understand. All healthcare facilities are required to have all employees and patients wear masks. Simple as that. Has nothing to do with the owner making up rules

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ORob — businesses can set their own rules. If people want to sue over being required to wear a mask and lose they can. But think when you say people “feel like” you got to the heart of it.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Regarding masks at my office, we don’t require it now. Last year we did require it for a while. Seemed there were 2 kind of customers. The ones that respected our rules and the ones who got pissy about the rule. It’s not that they did not believe in the virus. They just didn’t like to feel or be inconvenienced. We dropped our mask rule almost a year ago now. I can still tell the ones who respect rules cause they come in to this day and ask if they need to were a mask.

  6. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not just people on the right, that don’t respect the mask mandate, but those tend to be the vocal ones.

Plenty of people wear them at half mast or not at all once they get to a place they think no one is going to harass them, like in a sports book

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I agree. I see people of all walks of life wearing masks, not wearing masks, and sorta wearing masks.

One thing I will say, is most of the places I go to now, nobody confronts anyone anymore. The businesses are basically letting people do what they want even if they have the ‘mask required’ sign, and none of the customers are arguing with each other, so that’s an improvement.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If an establishment has a rule, in my eyes, you follow it and don’t bitch about it if you want their service.

Same as “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service” some stores have posted.

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Man you guys, Sacto is crazy right now. It looks like the dead of winter, dark and bleak. Then you step outside and realize that isn’t mist, it’s smoke. It’s been over 100 most days for awhile now, but we barely broke 90 yesterday because the sun can’t penetrate the smoke. Thankfully, none of my people are in danger from the fires, but it’s affecting friends and families of people I know.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That’s terrible. On the flip side, we have had more rain here than we know what to do with. This has been the rainiest summer I can remember in the 17 years I have been here.

      It’s the pole shift. lol

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, we’re years into another drought. Last year was one of the driest ever in Sacto. It would be great if you guys could send us some of that water, lol.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seems every year there’s far too many fires in CA, we’ve got some smoke here, but nothing like in the northern part of the state.

Rural CA has been trying for years to form their own state, to break away from the policies/taxes of the radicals in the big cities.

Look no further, than these fires and you can kind of see why.

They don’t clean the forest of the debri as they once did, making those in rural areas feeling like they’re on their own.

They seem to only cater to those in the big cities

One thing that does get me is businesses will require masks but then will let people use all sorts of things to cover their nose and mouths that are less than 30% affective or not at all. I see many people tie bandanas around their head and nose letting it dangle over their mouth. I’m like, yeah that works. Then you have the geniuses who walk around with a mask covering their mouth and nose sticking out. lol I am not talking about the ones who wear glasses and do it to keep their glasses from fogging either.

From what I understand, the COVID particulates are smaller than influenza particulates and 80-90 percent of the protection people use are only about 30% affective anyway. I could be wrong so feel free to correct me as I didn’t get that from any credible source. Just a friend.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if i walk into a public restaurant, and say the manager doesn’t like me for some other reason that has nothing to do with the restaurant, and i’m not causing a disturbance, Say if i have orange and aqua hair, Can that Manager ask me to leave based on his dislike for me?

I think if you service the public you’re bound by certain rules that go above your set of rules/discretion or policy.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You ever seen a sign in a bar that says “we reserve the right to refuse service”? Places are morally bound to apply their rules reasonably, but not legally. Exception is if anti-discrimination law comes into play. So no you can’t say no black folks.

Could put signs on my door that say “no red shirts,” “no open-toes sandals” or yes “no orange hair.”

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

What about the people who refuse to make you a cake because you’re gay? The Supreme court has ruled on that…

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Lol read the tweets from Wingfield and then Omar. Wingfield, reports the play and a break down of it, Omar, ever other one is a opinion. I mean not complaining about what Omar is saying really, just the different styles. 9 times out of 10 also Omar’s opinion is just off or highly subjective, and i like the way Wingfield sticks to the bullet points and the commentary of what’s happening not what’s running around in his head.

Double coverage on Shaheen, Tua throws it early and it’s RIGHT on the money – you could hear it hit Shaheen’s chest plate and the ball just stuck — 17-yard TD to open red zone 7 on 7.

I’ve only looked over a couple of times — but the OL/DL is working on picking up games (slants, stunts, twists) and the few reps I’ve seen have gone well for Miami. Davis and Hunt had a picture perfect one where the rush stopped in its tracks. Pankey and Robert Jones another.

By my unofficial count, Tua was 2-for-5 in his first round of 7-on-7 work in the redzone. Had the TD to Hollins and another great TD pass threaded to Adam Shaheen b/w two defenders. Another TD to Shaheen was wiped out b/c of OPI.
