CavKong, I HEAR YA on Chris Grier, man… as do many on Twitter. Many are getting frustrated with his picks over the last 5 or so years.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Grier has done well in certain aspects, but when ya miss at the top of the Draft, it comes back to haunt your house, eventually.

    Kong,

    Dave Hyde had a good article talking about that. He mentioned the Chargers last two drafts may have been better with two players than ours with 5 total. They’ve really drafted well lately and completely mitigated losing Rivers. Here’s an even more unpopular possibility I’m been ruminating on;

Flores is a huge asshole who is hard to work for. That’s why, even as a very talented coach, he attracts shitty assistants. This isn’t my hit piece or a factual observation, just some thoughts I’ve been having as we are on OC group #3 and OL coach #3. Where is continuity these players need for growth? Is that why they seem so lost? Why does Slater look better than any starter we have at all? Is that on Grier or the coaches? I know it’s early but after a drubbing, questions need asked.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      ^ VERY FAIR points.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s very tough to be a belichick style of coaching and not be bill belichick

A lot of his assistants have struggled this way

But I do like Flores and I like our organization

And I’m not ready to start talking about drafts like they are misses

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Very true and I like them too. My main concern is watching the OL pull into each other, completely whiffing on blocks, and all the other issues I’ve seen. We only have one rookie OL. These guys should be better Year 2. They seem worse.

Why the hell did the store call the cops about this?
    ——————————————–
Joseph Sobolewski grabbed a 20-ounce bottle of Mountain Dew at a store in Perry County, Pennsylvania last month. The store was charging $3 for two bottles of the beverage. Sobolewski put $2 on the counter and left the store.

But a single bottle of the beverage cost $2.29, not $1.50. So, the man was allegedly underpaying by 43 cents, including tax.

The store called police, and Sobolewski was arrested on August 23, according to court records. He was jailed and given a $50,000 bond.

Here’s a fun fact for ya, Stanger. We here in PA pay the highest taxes in gas of all 50 states… and that includes my father in Hawaii. Reason? We’re trying to fix our infrastructure. Funny… being our state is regularly rated as the worst state in the nation regarding roads and bridges.

We probably have more potholes in PA than Benghazi has ever had.

        THANKS, Tom Wolf.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    On the drafts so far:
Both Waddle and Holland look pretty good early

    Eichenberg doesn’t – but it’s pretty early
    Phillips doesn’t – but it’s early

I’m terms of last years draft, I can’t take anyone seriously who think it was a bad draft bc we drafted Tua over Herbert
Maybe in time that will pan out but not now

    Austin has been bad
Iggy can’t get on the field

    That said it’s early

I’m not sure I like like the idea of calling Hunt or Kindley bad bc the OL has been bad
The difference between those two and Austin is Austin sometimes just looks like he is getting manhandled (we should all remember he was deemed “raw” when drafted so Grier took that big risk)

Davis was a good pick – but it won’t matter if he’s injured. People won’t see it

I don’t mind people scrutinizing the picks and the moves

But there’s a lot of people with the foot slammed on the pedal before a lot of football has been paid

The OL was a disaster last week. But that’s not just bad personnel decisions IMO

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t disagree with ya, and there are no ‘but’s. We just need our early picks to emerge quicker than what they have in recent years. Seems like every early pick of ours needs YEARS to even attain the status of GOOD, much less GREAT.

And in contrast, we see rookies on other teams (who we passed on in the Draft) become instant Pro-Bowlers and future HOFers.

      It’s frustrating, to be sure!

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We don’t really need them to emerge quickly

We certainly don’t need Noah to emerge and bc he doesn’t and can’t get on the field, people call him a bust

When we get past these first 5 games on our schedule, we are going to get a series of wins in a row against teams like the jests, giants, falcons, panthers, Texans and Jaguars

And when we do – a bunch of people will be molding HOF busts of Chris Greir

Not bc he earned it, but bc people are being reactionary

The tail is wagging the dog on this one

A real detailed look at our picks is going to give everyone mixed results

But Right after devastating losses (and news) people aren’t really being logical about player evaluations

Do I have to be a liberal to have liberal politics? Cause I’m not.
    ————–
My guy, I’d REALLY rather not talk about politics! You posted about it, and I responded in kind. You call yourself a “Reagan Republican”, but you seem to miss the overall conservatism of the man.

You call yourself a “NEVER TRUMP-er”, and voted for the current imbecile in the White House. When we vote with HATE, it’s never good, my friend… as you can now see. Voting for the so-called lesser of two evils, as advised by the MEDIA?

I’m tired of the media agenda and I have thought for myself since the year 2000. Why? The media spurned ME, and I learned firsthand.

Let’s bring it back to football, now.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Wow, shit got real up in this beotch! Always entertaining.

Just my thoughts: Jackson looks like he just isn’t into it mentally this year. I’m not really sure what is going on with him. He’s a physically gifted, raw kid who was gonna take several years to get where he COULD be. He’s just a kid playing against grown men. I think he misses having Fitz and especially Flowers playing next to him. But, he’s a physically talented kid with great measurables. You see what he can become…and you’re gonna take some lumps along the way.
    ***
Kindley is a big, powerful dude who has okay feet. I think he’s a better fit at RG, but he can play either. I’m not as high on him as some, but he should become AT LEAST an average OL eventually…and potentially pretty good. He’s gotta get his technique down and stop relying on his size. Fixable shit…but some guys never do.
    ***
Deiter is still an unknown to me. So much of the C position is mental, and I can’t assess that a lot just by watching a game. Physically, he’s actually held up better than I thought he would so far. I was worried he was gonna get pushed around a little, but he’s really not. He’s an effort guy. But, if he is screwing up protection calls, he won’t be in there long. You can’t have that. Draft Linderbaum!!! The kid’s a nasty, natural leader.
    ***
I know folks think Hunt should be at tackle, but I just don’t see it. His footwork is poor. I also don’t get why people say he looked good last year. He graded out as very average. I prefer him at guard. I actually think he’s athletic enough to play traditional pulling LG, but I have no problem with him at RG. I think his ceiling could be pretty high at guard. If they do put him back out at tackle, he’s gotta get his footwork right. There’s a reason they put Davis at tackle and moved Hunt inside to guard as the season progressed last year. They could have left him at tackle and put Davis at guard. They didn’t. You don’t move someone out of the tackle spot if you truly think he can play it well.
    ***
Davis is a backup, but I love the guy. He’s the sort of guy who gets the most out of his talent. His athleticism just isn’t very good. The longer he plays, the more he gets beat as defenders figure him out and take advantage of his mediocre athleticism. He’s a great swing G/T….valuable guy. I just prefer it if he’s not a long term starter.
    ***
Eich has looked okay so far. He’s held his own. He really doesn’t stand out in any way…good or bad. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Lol He’s a rookie, any productive snaps he gives you is gravy. So far…so good.
    ***
This is such a young group of guys, but they all have upside. We won’t find out what their ceilings are for another couple years, so I’d suggest folks strap in if they think these first two games have been bumpy? Lol

I read through this long post and I can’t say I disagree with any of it

Division games are the worst measure of where you are they’re a clusterfuck we should be looking a whole lot different over the course of the next several weeks. Hopefully when we see those guys again we’re playing with some momentum. The season starts this week I don’t know what to call those first two games but at least we have a win through it all.

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Piggy, this fact is as true today as it was 5 years ago on this blog, and 10 years ago on the blog, and 15 years ago on the blog, some people absolutely won’t admit there might be a problem in the kitchen until the house is completely burned down and they walk through the ashes. At that point we might get a “Yeah, we might need a new house. Looks like the kitchen actually was on fire.” lol.

It’s a mistake to assume people are being reactionary just because they speak up after a loss like this. Sometimes it’s just not worth the argument to point out issues prior to us getting destroyed, because it inevitably devolves into reductive arguments and people yelling ‘patience brigade!’ or…um, I forgot what the other side’s name was, lol. ‘Henne haters?’ idk

I think we have a number of issues personnel decision-wise, but I also think our HC has masked some of the issues and gotten above expected results. I had a 9 page book outlining all the things I think, but decided I’d speak generally instead because I don’t want to get into a “Iggy can’t get on the field because he sucks” vs “well he’s a project, and we have a good secondary, blah, blah, blah” tit for tat.

Simply put I think you can’t field a SB team without good trenches, and I question our GMs ability to get the right guys on both sides of the line. I know, Wilkins, Davis, Phillips. All I know is our front 7 has problems stopping the run and can’t get pressure without blitzing, so…we’ll see if Phillips develops and Davis develops, and Wilkins shows up, etc.

I’ll just finish with, I know we’re young, I know we might get better. I know guys like Davis and Phillips might grow into their potential. Just because I think we have major issues right now, doesn’t mean we’re stuck in a static position, and things can’t progress.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

What’s with you guys and the long fucking posts! Lol

That’s all fine Kong, I can appreciate that calling it ‘reactionary’ may be oversimplifying it and we have a real history of disagreeing with each other

But 2 games into the season is going to seem like a small glimpse into the season by December. If what we see reoccurs – it the first glimpse of how bad we were. But we still have 15 games to go and I personally want to see the entire picture before I decide whether what we are doing is working or not

Maybe I’m a little too rigidly structured about these things, I’m willing to look at questions like whether Flores is the right coach, or whether Grier is the right gm or whether Tua is the right QB

None of those things are sacred to me to be beyond question

      But not in September….

I don’t get the point of that

  47. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So on the All-22 tape I posted yesterday, it’s clear to see Tua calling out where the blitz was coming from. Why did nobody do anything about picking up the CB blitz?

I’ve got to believe that it was a communication problem and not a lack of vision. Tua called it out for the whole world to see, yet nobody moved to block the CB. That’s pretty messed up, but it all comes down to communication.

Without a doubt, we’re going over communication this week BIG TIME. And I’m willing to bet that having two OCs isn’t helping matters in the least. I’m looking for a big improvement this Sunday when it comes to the O-Line.

  48. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m doing some homework on Jacoby Brissett. NOW I know why he’s so good under duress: his O-Line coach in ’17 for the Colts was Joe Philbin, where he was sacked a league-high 52 times. He’s been there and done that behind a piss-poor O-Line.

Fast-forward to ’19, where Brissett had one of the best O-Lines in the league. He was MUCH better when given time in the pocket. Just watched his ’19 highlight reel, and you can see why we picked him up as our backup QB. Hits on the quick-hitters, makes wiser decisions, and he is most servicable.

Unfortunately, we seem to have an O-Line akin to Brissett’s ’17 Colts O-Line (81.7 passer rating). The math isn’t in our favor.

While I totally understand the cross-training for positional flexibility, it would seem we have yet to identify our top-5 O-Linemen and playing them in concrete positions. Thus, they have yet to gel as a team.

We can’t continue to do this, unless we really want to fall behind the 8 ball.

“The interesting thing I think there — and this is just me, an outsider looking in — it was like Bill never really . . . I think his emotions or feelings never evolved with age. I think in time, with Tom, as Tom got into his late 30s or early 40s, I think Bill was still trying to treat him like that 20-year-old kid that he drafted. And all the players, I think, realized Tom was different. He’s older, so he should be treated differently. And all the players, none of them would have cared that he was treated differently. I think that was such a Bill thing. He never evolved. So you can’t treat someone who’s in his 40s like they’re 20. It doesn’t work.”

But even at work, there are instances where the student becomes the master much sooner than expected. It’s just the way of the world, man. 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

To elaborate, we’ve BOTH seen rookie phenoms get drafted early, replacing a veteran player at any given position, and the rook ends up going to the NFL HOF. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sure there are times the student becomes the master and when that happens at work it happens. By the time was Brady’s age was running the joint. My mentor had prepared me for that.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Exactly. And sometimes, it happens before one becomes Brady’s ‘old’ age of 44, contingent upon field, intelligence, wisdom, and experience (via mentor) at a younger age.

We’re definitely not disagreeing, my man.

But when the mentor is unwavering (in this case, Belicheat*) in the way he treats his vets, I can totally understand why Brady would want to get out from under his thumb.

Honestly, I’m surprised Brady hadn’t done it sooner.

watching that video, as painful as it was, showed me that there was a lot of blame to go around. Gaskin whiffs on a block he should have made and runs to the middle of the line to “help” on a blocked man at one point and lets the free blitz from the CB. Adam Sheehan completely whiffs on another that was obviously his assignment. It wasn’t just the line. SOOO much goes wrong in just those 9 plays!!!!!

  67. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

First play, Gaskin steps up to the right into a hole in the line and dances around, blocks no-one while the free blitzer sacks Tua. third play Malcolm brown does something similar in the left A gap, let’s the free rusher from the left. (that[s the play Tua points to the guy, Brown doesn’t even see Tua point) 5th play is a designed roll out. Sheehan plays patty-cake with his guy for 1/2 a second and the guy totally runs around him to pressure Tua for an incomplete

    https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/sports/nfl/2021/09/23/dolphins-rookie-liam-eichenberg-makes-flash-cards-learn-t-and-g/5833444001/

This is my concern in a nutshell. This rookie has already played in 4 positions. That’s not how you get consistency. That’s not how a guy learns blocking assignments. That’s not something a successful offense does. I think in our leadership’s constant desire for versatility, they are messing things up. Are thy asking the OL coach to practice routes with the WRs? Is Chris Grier doing some part time strength and conditioning on the side? No, because they have one job and they are expected to focus on one job. There may be many parts but they’ve had years and decades to learn these roles. A good coach will have an idea where a player will fit based off all that drafting work. Based off success for other types of players. For our OL coach, from playing himself. It’s a disservice to Tua and our players to play musical position chairs because you haven’t figured out how to get an OT to do that job exceptionally well. Because you want to keep 100 WRs instead of having enough OL. Because you want to be cute with your versatility mantra.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re not the only team that cross-trains OL. There seems to be this idea we’re the only team that does that. That’s not true. Look at the OL and top 6 we seem to be rolling with.
      LT Jackson (2)
      LG Kindley (2)
      C Deiter (3)
      RG Hunt (2)
      RT Davis (7)
Eichenberg (R) is being used as the 6th guy who has worked at LT, LG and RT. It’s not about the versatility mantra. The fact is 5 of the 6 are very young. Now that might be the problem, we went too young too fast. But we’re not switching everyone all over the place like some keep suggesting. They’re not playing well as a group yet and that’s the problem.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

If one dude is playing 4 positions in his first 3 games on the team, that’s not consistency. That’s the exact opposite. If the other dudes aren’t getting it done, why wasn’t this seen earlier since none of the others are rookies? This entire week has been the media talking about changes to the OL Coaches changing the OL so it must have some validity. That’s not figuring stuff out in a timely fashion. That should have been figured out already.

I don’t care if other teams cross trains but I bet they don’t have an entire OL full of young cross trained dudes. I guarantee they don’t. Give them time to learn a position. Teach them their best position in your mind exclusively until they learn it. You may not have noticed all those blown assignments but a lot of other people did including me. Tua did too as he was getting smashed due to bad OL play that wasn’t fixed from last year’s bad OL play with the same group.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

New Age, you basically ignored what I said about how young we are on the OL. This group has a very little body of work playing together as it stands. I did say we might have gone too young too fast didn’t I?

Who has played 4 different positions in their first 3 games with the 3rd game not having been played yet? Nobody! Unfortunately we haven’t figured out the best 5 yet and that’s because the players aren’t living up to expectations. If it fails all year that’s on Grier and the coaches. Right now it’s not good. But there are 15 games to go. We’re 1-1 off of a really bad game. Not 0-7. LOL

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I didn’t ignore that, I didn’t respond to it specifically because it was a great point. You’re right but it is frustrating to see at this time. I was hoping for more growth from the second year players and I think Eichenberg is really struggling learning two positions which isn’t ideal. It is what it is but I think it’s really harming Tua which makes that assessment even harder. It’s still early but not for bitching, bro. Never too early for that so I’m lighting the pillar lol.

There’s always different approaches and philosophies. Teams do try players at different positions, that’s been going on forever. It’s true you need repetition and consistency on the O-line but you also want to find your best 5 and then find the best spot for each. We always look at things more short sighted than the coaches do. They want success and will take the time to do what they need to do. It’s not about this week or next week or even this season, it’s about getting it right.
