Game 15 – Dolphins @ Saints

It’s that time of year folks, the time of the NFL football season where you start doing mad calculations as to what your team’s playoff chances are. Think about it, really think about it. It’s crazy that we’re even in position to be thinking about such things. This season was going the way of blowing it up, and that means GM, Coach and starting all over again at 1-7. When you consider that this was the feeling here and now that an unlikely 6 game win streak which included some “gimmes” but also included a game I figured we had no business winning against the 6-2 Baltimore Ravens. That was a game I expected to be thrashed as per usghe, especially considering the the Ravens had pulverized our Dolphins in the last 4 meetings to the tune of 137-16. Yes, we beat the Jets twice, the Watsonless Texans, the Panthers who were flying high because their “Superman” Cam Newton was back at QB, and the other NY Football team, the Daniel Jonesless Giants. Whatever the level of competition you play in the NFL, it’s remarkable to run off 6 straight wins. So now our Dolphins sit at 7-7 and enable us to banter back and forth and argue about which teams we should root for in which matchups. Gotta love it!

We travel to play the New Orleans Saints, led by one of the better NFL Head Coaches around, Sean Payton. He’s hamstrung somewhat because he has to rely on a guy that he used to draw up a number of offensive packages for and pull then QB Drew Brees and let the gadget guy Taysom Hill go out and use his athletic ability, a nice change of pace from the heavy passing offense of Drew Brees. However, COVID-19 has struck the Saints and both starter Taysom Hill and backup Trevor Siemian are both out with COVID so they will be forced to start rookie QB Ian Book. Ian Book was the Saints 4th RD Pick (#133) this year. When you face this current Saints team, you no longer worry about WR Michael Thomas, it’s basically the Alvin Kamara show. For perspective, Kamara leads the team in rush attempts (184), receptions (38) and total yards with 1016, 668 yards rushing, 348 yards receiving. He’s basically their offense, and if you can limit Kamara, you’re probably going to beat the Saints. The Saints are also 7-7, but unlike the surging Dolphins, the Saints were 5-2 and now have lost 5 of 7. The Saints have one of the better NFL defensive units, currently 6th in points allowed at 20.4 PPG. The Dolphins slipped a bit and are now worse than midpack at 22.3 PPG. Offensively, the Saints are 17th (22.4 PPG) and the Dolphins are 21st at (20.4 PPG). With QB Ian Book in, you really are playing against The Kamaras this week.

The Dolphins managed to slip past the Jets last week and although we didn’t look great doing so, we did enough to win, and that’s what it’s all about now. Just win baby. I know some of you people are all on board “The Duke Train” but I’m of the opinion that he had a really nice day in front of a crowd he was eager to be in front of and seized the opportunity. Does he end up being another Lamar Smith type story, we’ll find out. For the record, I hope Duke is even better than Lamar Smith, but I’m not expecting as much as others from The Duke. I do like the physical style and effort he brings so maybe that rubs off on the other guys. Tua had an uneven game against the Jets, we’ll need a better effort from him. The good thing is the O-line play is trending upwards, a great sign. They have quite the challenge in the Saints front 7, Cam Jordan is one of the best DE’s in football. Marcus Davenport excels as well and benefits from the extra attention teams usually slide towards Jordan. Kwon Alexander is a fine LB along with former Jet Demario Davis. LB Kaden Ellis is on the COVID list so not sure if he plays. The Saints secondary isn’t too shabby either with CB’s Marcus Lattimore and Bradley Roby. SS Malcolm Jenkins is a wily veteran and is joined by FS Marcus Williams. The trio of Davis, Jenkins and Williams are the Saints leading tacklers.

As you are all aware, our friend Jon (Stanger) is still fighting the good fight. At times it looks like he’s turned a corner only to fall back a few steps. This is going to be a tough battle for him so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. At this time, I want to wish all of you here Happy Holidays, and also hoping for all of you to stay safe and healthy.

Merry Christmas

IAN the “Bookworm” is in for a rough evening. Barring a dramatic shift in the Covid situation, I expect nothing less than a Dolphins’ victory on Monday Night. Many have wondered how good TUA can be with a legit running game and an O-Line that’s at least average for the NFL. Monday Night will give us a few of the answers.

THANKS, Mike E., for another solid analysis of an upcoming Dolphins’ game. We COULD be on the cusp of NFL history!! Can this Dolphins’ team actually become the FIRST TEAM EVER to start 1-7 and make the NFL Playoffs??? The only thing that would make this drama EVEN BETTER would be if Frank, Dandy Don, and Howard Cosell came back from the dead to announce the most important Monday Night game for the Dolphins THIS CENTURY!!! It is hard to over-hype this one!!

    New Age,

I’m glad you are enjoying The Witcher as much as I am. It’s excellent in so many ways that I am actually doing the opposite of a binge. I’m watching an episode or two every day just to stretch it out and savor it. I’ve got two episodes left.

If you end up getting back into Dark, you’ll have to let me know what you think. Personally, I think it is one of the most brilliantly conceived and executed shows I’ve ever seen, but I am definitely in the minority.

    Kong,
I thought this season of the Witcher was lacking. The whole thing felt like a side mission where there was no focus on a main plot. I found the antagonists lacking as well.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Bummer, bro. I still have two episodes to go, but I’ve loved it. To me the season has been about world building and going in depth into The Witchers, their history, and their place in the world. It has also really advanced the Ciri plot from the books, introduced the Wild Hunt, the concept that maybe Nilfgaard might be better for the world, and I feel like it’s building to something with the Emhyr this season (could be wrong).

I’m enjoying it just like a book, I’m completely fine without a particular single season main plot because I find the stories they are telling fun and I enjoy all the characters of the world.

I think it’s the best way to tell these kinds of fantasy stories, not to get caught up in the formulaic season progression, but to tell stories, build the world, build the characters. And honestly the Witcher books, at least the first couple are basically just a bunch of short stories that are woven together with no real main plot.

Just my own take on it 🙂

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Some idiots will read the stat sheet and say Tua didn’t have a good game against the jets, but I don’t agree

It wasn’t flawless, but it was far from not good

He doesn’t have to be perfect, he just has to be good enough to win

He passed with flying colors the adversity test

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He along with the rest of the team came out flat and he threw a few errant passes. His accuracy was off early on. But he also made some really good throws and he played tough. The most impressive part of Tua’s game are his instincts. In the pocket and eyes down the field knowing he has a check down if the better play isn’t there. He processes quickly.

I’m all busted up about it, aren’t you?
Years ago when Marino tore his achilles on a horrid Cleveland playing field, their fans in the Dog Pound cheered mightily, even tho’ it was a loose piece of turf, and NOT a Brown’s player, who caused the injury!! Scott Mitchell came in and threw a one-hop touchdown pass to Keith Jackson, who “sold” his non-catch to the officials in this NON-REPLAY year.
MIAMI went on to win that game, to the chagrin of the Dog Pound Drunks! I WAS SO-O-O happy to see those jerks get what they deserved!!

  64. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Bills/ Pets game is looming very large for our playoff Hope’s. Fucking NFC West let us down big this week.

  65. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are NO super strong favorites as we approach the playoffs. The Bucs have lost SO MANY KEY PLAYERS to injuries (Chris Godwin, Fournette, among the most recent) that they no longer have the talent edge they once had. A lousy Browns team nearly beat the Packers tonight and the LA Sheep don’t scare anyone. Arizona, the last team to lose a game this season, looked totally undisciplined tonight and their placekicking game looked like a train wreck.
The truth is that IF your team can just make the playoffs, they HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN THE WHOLE THING. I think even a #6 or #7 seed, if they get on a hot streak, can win the Super Bowl. I know many of us think just making the playoffs would make Miami’s season a success. NOT ME!! I want the Fins to break their 21st century streak of NOT WINNING A SINGLE PLAYOFF GAME TO END THIS SEASON!!

WE are peaking at just the right time. IF our players exercise good judgment we could avoid some of the Covid-Related detriments to our roster that other teams are going through. WWE’RE GOING TO FIND OUT which Miami players WANT TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP and which players are more concerned about partying. Let’s face it, Covid IS HERE TO STAY, in one variant or another, as far down the road as we can see. Adjustments and concessions to common sense have to be made during these dangerous times. And the teams that make the best adjustments will have the most players available to rumble through the playoffs.

The upcoming Monday Night game is a prime example of this. The Saints have lost their top 2 QB’s to the Covid virus for this game. They are in DEEP SHIT. The Baltimore Ravens have lost their top 2 QB’s to the Covid or to an ankle injury. They, too, are in DEEP SHIT! Who knows how many more higher ranked team rosters will be impacted by this damn virus? That’s why I SAY AGAIN, the teams that do the best job of avoiding the Covid have the best chance to succeed in the PLAYOFFS!

I hope the Dolphins are one of them!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Even with the Saints playing their 4th QB and down some skill players like they have been most of the season, they have a very good defense.

Our defense should be a tough opponent for their offense. Kamara should be our target to take out of the game. Kamara is a very savvy runner and receiver. I see Baker being a shadow on him most of the game. Sometimes Holland, Rowe and Brandon Jones will get the call. I don’t see how the Saints beat us without Kamara making plays.

      Go Phins!!! Go Stanger!!!

  66. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Cards looked terrible. Colts gave them so many chances and were without quite a few players. I wasn’t impressed with their offense, and they had a lot of unnecessary penalties. As ugly as the Packers game was, the next one wasn’t really an improvement.

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Our playoff chances are looking bleak. Unfortunately, so is our 1st round pick. We basically need 49er’s to lose one more and Philly and Vikings to win out. Vikings have Rams and Packers next 2 games. Though, looks possible for Philly to win next 2 then finish up vs Dallas.

Vikings and Eagles wins today could temporarily knock SF out of the wild card due to better conference record unless SF has the head to head on one of them.

If this would happen, we would move up 2 spots to #18.

Is it wrong that I hope the Bills and Patriots kill each other?

Does it matter who wins in the begals/ravens game is?

    Same record 8-6
They both have hard schedules coming up and can easily go 0-3 if they lose today

Either team could easily go 8-9 or
I guess ideallyboth team go 9-8

I don’t trust the Bills at all to win

  86. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And I guess we are rooting for bills to lose one of their final 2 if they lose today

If the Bills lose today, we’re probably screwed unless the Chargers lose twice. If they win, we really don’t care what they do. Bonus would be them losing their last two
