Dolphins franchise presses reset button . . . Again!

I know Brian Flores wasn’t perfect, I watch all the games and see this team play every week. Once the Dolphins fired Flores, it’s amazing how quickly the negative stories came out. Look, some of them are probably true, and others are just silly. I’ll never know the veracity of all of them and frankly, it doesn’t matter. I was ready to hitch my wagon to Flores and for a decade or so. I mean as a Dolphins fan, you just have to be tired of the turnover here. We’ve seen this now far too many times since the new millennium. In 2000, Dave Wannstedt was our Head Coach. In 2005 Satan, er Nick Saban took over. In 2007 we got the Cam Cameron show for all of 1 year, and with his 1-15 record, one year too many. Then Bill Parcells came to town with his lazy uninspired plan to fix the Dolphins for owner Wayne Huizenga. He brought Jeff Ireland (GM), Head Coach Tony Sparano, and OC Dan Henning and DC Paul Pasqualoni. Thanks Bill for your efforts! Near the end of the 2011 season, Todd Bowles replaced Tony Sparano. In 2012, as if Bill Parcells grand plan wasn’t uninspiring enough, Stephen Ross hired Head Coach Joe Phibin. Joe somehow was allowed to muddle through 4 seasons here boring Dolphins fans everywhere. In 2016, we hired Head Coach Adam Gase, that of “Offensive Guru” status. We was offensive alright. Maybe Ross realized that he gave Philbin one too many so he cut Gase’s tenure at 3 years. In 2019 we hired the young, fiery defensive coordinator from the rival Patriots. Yes, another Belichick disciple. Flores was given only 3 years, perhaps once again harking back to Joe Philbin getting 4 years. If you’re wondering, since the year 2000, the Dolphins record is 176-183. Uninspiring.

I’m not going to touch any of the stories circulating regarding why Flores may have been fired. We saw the offense as an ineffective unit. Flores’ defensive pedigree had this team’s defense ahead of the offense during his 3 year tenure. Not that the defense was a championship level defense, it wasn’t, but compared to the offense it may have looked that way. Our offensive line has been an issue for years and despite Grier’s attempts to bring in talent to remedy the situation, drafting OT Liam Eichenberg in RD 2 (#42) in 2021, OT Austin Jackson in RD 1 in 2020 (#18), OG Robert Hunt in RD 2 (#39), and OG Solomon Kindley (#111) in RD 4. In 2019 we drafted OC Michael Deiter in RD 3 (#78). It’s certainly not due to a lack of effort, but our 2021 O-line was ranked dead last at #32. Truth be told, I feel we have talented players on that line, but Flores’ choice of Lemuel Jeanpierre seems to be the linchpin. This is a unit that must be fixed in order for this team’s offense to be successful. I hope whoever the new HC is realizes that a great veteran O-line Coach is necessary here. Notice how I haven’t once mentioned Tua? If I could talk to him, I’d tell him this . . .

So now the search begins, and I really don’t have a strong feeling as to who the new Head Coach will be. I have to admit I’m a little concerned that we didn’t clean house completely. If Chris Grier was fired as well, you find a GM and then that GM hires the new coach. Now, despite not getting fired, you have the appearance of a GM who may be on the hot seat hiring a new Head Coach and that makes the job less appealing. As if having 8 Head Coaches in the last 21 years isn’t unappealing enough!!! The good thing Dolphins fans, is that there are only 32 Head Coaching jobs and we have an opening, so there will be lots of interest regardless of the aforementioned pitfalls. We have a young, talented roster that some coach is going to be thrilled to take the helm of. Plenty of money in Free Agency will be available as well, close to $70M. We have a defensive unit on the rise with potential to be a top 10 defense if the offense gets on track. Some of that $70M will have to be used to re-sign our own players. DE Emmanuel Ogbah, TE Mike Gesicki, WR/ST Mack Hollins, TE Durham Smythe, LB Elandon Roberts and DB Nik Needham. RB Duke Johnson will probably be taken care of as well. I think Ogbah is the top priority, he’s been great since he got here and is an important piece of this defense. I think Gesicki should also be a priority but it depends on what type of TE the new HC is looking for. If he wants a receiving threat TE then Gesicki will be back. If he wants a blocking TE then it’s more likely Durham Smythe comes back and Gesicki goes elsewhere. Mack Hollins is becoming a better WR and is invaluable as a special teams player. I also hope we re-sign Nik Needham, I like that kid, and he always exceeds expectations.

Defensive players like CB Xavien Howard, CB Byron Jones, S Jevon Holland and S Brandon Jones will be sure to help lure a potential HC here. LB’s Jerome Baker and Andrew Van Ginkel as well, and of course young DE/LB Jaelan Phillips. On offense, rookie sensation WR Jaylen Waddle is a great start, but the falloff is big after that. Free agency and the draft are going to both be used to bring in talent at WR to complement Jaylen Waddle. Running back has to be a priority as well and if you know me, I want to draft one, not overpay for one in FA. Draft a RB early enough to procure one of the best RB’s in this draft, add in one of the holdovers like Myles Gaskin, re-sign Duke Johnson and pick up a FA RB that won’t break the bank. How we proceed at TE interests me. I’m very curious to see if we keep Mike Gesicki and/or Durham Smythe.

Here’s hoping we make the right choice for our new Head Coach, whomever he may be. Here’s hoping this new Head Coach can be successful enough to be here more than 10 years. Here’s also hoping we made the right choice retaining GM Chris Grier. Here’s hoping for a full recovery for our friend Jon “Stanger”. Here’s hoping for all of us to stay healthy in 2022.

Good game right now. The Bengals are definitely and up and coming team. Raiders fight though and there is plenty of time left.

I would be happy if they won SB .. don’t think they will but I’ll be cheering them on

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya! They’re a likeable team. Ironic that Zac Taylor is their HC, a guy many fans on these blogs we’ve been on made fun of when he was Tannehill’s QB coach under Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman who is his father-in-law. He seems to be a pretty darn good coach.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I have liked them ever since they put the stripes on their helmets .. and yes I really liked Burrow and was hoping somehow we ended up with him.. he has been as advertised.. hopefully Tua and Waddle become as dynamic as Burrow and Chase

Amazing what a QB can do for you

NFL and NHL Allstar games both here in LV, cheapest seats 102 and 143 respectively

Who the fuck is going to pay that much + fees for the NFL Allstar game?

For sure the prices will come down, but I’m not paying even $50

We should trade Jackson for Leatherwood🤪

I think that if tonight’s Bills/Pats game ends in regulation tie, both should be eliminated 🤷‍♂️😊

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, even though Tua didn’t put up big time numbers, he did help the team win 7 of the 8 games he played in down the stretch. I think he showed a mental toughness through all the nonsense he had to deal with. I also think he has that intangible that isn’t always easy to detect what it is, but some people have it. They win more than they lose.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve said as much, but we need to see what he looks like behind an avg OL and some decent receivers, until then he really can’t be evaluated fairly

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. The same upgrades on offense we’ve all talked about still has to happen even with a new HC.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Comparing Tua to the stiff piece of Brisket and that shows he’s worth at least another look

Dang, how much cocaine did Josh Allen snort before the game?

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I really hope Allen loses some of this physical talent early rather than later in his career. He’s huge, so good chance he drops a little speed by the time he’s 30. His speed, and even more so his fluidity as a runner while being so big is almost unfair.

  41. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This is the Bart Scott/Josh Allen/Viagra deal that Ken and I are referencing! 😆

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I will say Ken was all about Josh Allen in the draft. He was right. Allen’s size and skill set is built for any weather game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Anyone see that deep passing (40+) is not a big part of football these days? It’s kind of rare. It’s more YAC than the distance of the throw. Just saying. 😉

  43. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Bills score a TD here, this game is over.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I could also look it up. I’m annoyed they didn’t replay it during the broadcast on the next drive if they had to. It’s just not quality production they somehow missed that.

I’ve actually had a problem with a number of games this year with poor production decisions like that from Fox and CBS, so it’s kind of been my thing, lol.

  53. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Quite honestly, I’m very surprised this Bills team lost 6 games in the regular season. They are absolutely stacked, especially on Defense.

  54. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Allen made that defensive back look silly. A guy that big shouldn’t be able to move that fluidly.

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just remember Brian Daboll coached with Josh Boyer for years in NE so it’s not impossible to keep the same defense rolling. Maybe Boyer would love to stay with the guys he’s been working with for 3 years. He deserves a raise by the way.

Oooooops, #77 got beat there and/or just gave up

  62. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Tim, I didn’t know that. That would be pretty amazing if we can keep Boyer and this defensive system intact.

  64. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Damn, there goes the shutout

  65. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

What is the deal with the Pets and kickers? Folk was a decent kicker, but pretty average for most of his flipping career, was out of the league in 2018 after hitting less than 60% in 2017, then goes to the Pets and is all pro.

  66. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, great response from the Raiders coach regarding the whistle

  68. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m seeing a BOATLOAD of support on Twitter to name Mike McDaniel our new HC. Well, here’s the thing: he’s Joe Philbin… he preps the team as an OC, but he’s NOT the signal-caller on gameday.

Not sure I’d trust McDaniel to be our new HC… much less to be our Offensive signal-caller, being he doesn’t have that under his belt.

I absolutely LOVE the enthusiasm and quirk McDaniel has… but is he truly our best HC option? NO.

  69. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

9.1 yds per play, lmao, that’s ridiculous

  74. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Daboll walks int interview tomorrow. Drops mike. Leaves.

  75. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As Tim and I have been trying to say, Brian Daboll essentially has the stolen plans for the Buffalo Bills’ Death Star, he worked with Tua at Alabama as his OC/QB coach in ’17, he has a long history with Josh Boyer in New England (perhaps retaining Boyer for continuity on our Defense?), he helped to transform Josh Allen into a top-10 (or better) QB, he might be able to bring vet O-Line coach Dave DeGuglielmo back, he’s worked to some extent with Chris Grier in the past, he’s garnered a lot of experience over the years in the NFL (not some kind of upstart), he can most likely assemble a decent staff [unlike Sparano (RIP), Philbin, Gase, and Flores], and most of all… he’s had SUCCESS since he was last here in ’11!

And as I stated above (and unlike Philbin, Gase, and Mike McDaniel), he’s actually called the plays on Offense.

Lady and gentlemen, I’m ALL-IN on Brian Daboll as our next HC.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We don’t know how good he’ll be as a HC, but his resume makes a lot of sense as a quality coach. His connections with some of our guys means something to me. Tua and Boyer.

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is the first time a Belicheat led team has ever given up TDs on 4 consecutive possessions (now 5).

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

McDaniel is worth the risk, because he really could be the next young stud, Daboll is intriguing, because he’s been with Tua at Bama

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Daboll has been a part of winning the AFC East and playing in championship games and Super Bowls. NE and BUF. I have no idea how it will all play out, but he knows what winning football looks like.
