Preseason Game 2 – Raiders at Dolphins

Game 1 of the 2022 preseason was different than I expected. I definitely didn’t expect to see Skylar Thompson the entire game and I also didn’t expect that the majority of starters for both teams would held out, but that was the arrangement the 2 teams made, or at least I believe that’s the case. Being that there are only THREE preseason games as opposed to FOUR (due to the new CBA), this will probably be the dress rehearsal game, as preseason game 3 used to be. We did get to see some starters on the O-line last week and I thought the guys looked pretty good overall. Yes, they were going against Tampa’s second string and sometimes 3rd string, but in preseason, those guys are busting their ass to make a name for themselves and trying to earn a roster spot, so the fact that none of our O-line guys struggled is a good thing. Skylar Thompson did everything he could to try and make the roster, and I think it may end up being a tough decision in the end. Tua hasn’t proved he can play an entire season and stay healthy, and Teddy Bridgewater is obviously more accomplished, but Teddy B is on a 1YR contract and putting Skylar Thompson on the PS leaves his open to be snatched by another NFL team. Hard to say the Dolphins are going to the Superbowl with Tua, can they get there with Teddy Bridgewater?

We had some guys show up nice in game 1 on defense, namely LB Cameron Goode, LB Duke Riley, and LB Sam Eguavoen who had an INT. The secondary was pretty ineffective, as both Gabbert and Trask shredded the Dolphins defensive backs. Noah Igbinoghene did not have a good outing and it’s getting less likely each week that Iggy finds his way onto the roster. The Dolphins did sign veteran CB Mackensie Alexander, former 2nd RD pick in 2016 by the Minnesota Vikings. If Byron Jones is fully healthy, Alexander will be competing for the 3rd CB spot with one of my favorites, Nik Needham. At worst he’s a fine depth guy who despite not starting a ton of games (25 in 4 seasons), he’s done it and has enough game experience. I’m holding out hope that Byron Jones can be healthy and start the season playing, rather than on the PUP.

We’ll get to see Tyreek Hill and Waddle on the field together in a game for the first time. That’s exciting! I would like to see the O-line keep up the good work they started last week. No other unit on this team concerns me more. Getting reps together and playing well will give these guys confidence going into the regular season so I’d love to see them succeed. I still think we have a lot of talent on the O-line, namely Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Terron Armstead, Connor Williams and Robert Hunt have already established themselves. One shout out, OG Solomon Kindley had a very strong game against the Bucs. That’s great news because he’s a real mauler, and the fact he played well in this blocking scheme is great for us because he’ll give us some nice depth. Anyone who’s seen this kid in the run game remembers how nasty he is.

On the defensive side, the secondary is the unit to watch. To be honest, it’s the D-line and LB’s that I want to watch, but we’ll see if Mackensie Alexander gets some reps and how he fares in our defensive scheme. I have a lot of confidence in our defense, but the Raiders did some shopping in the offseason too, and now they Davante Adams and our own pal Mack Hollins, along with one of the peskiest slot receivers in the game, Hunter Renfrow. Not sure how much those guys play, but Adams and Renfrow are a handful! Oh, and they happen to have one of the best receiving TE’s in the game in Darrren Waller. The Raiders defense is no joke either, they have the talented DE Maxx Crosby along with newly added Chandler Jones. Our O-line has a tough task against these, and will provide a stout test. Not sure how much Josh Jacobs plays but he’s a load, and rookie Zamir White is a tough runner as well, I know some of us were hoping he’d land here. The score of the game and who wins is unimportant, but how we get there tells the story. Hoping we play strong and remain healthy!

There IS a purpose to preseason games, *believe it or not* (in my Jack Palance voice). It’s not about wins or losses, it’s about individual matchups in order to figure out what sticks or what stinks.

Our team as a WHOLE cannot possibly be judged, but individuals can be judged being they are being put into situations. Some are about reps to get better while some are being scrutinized to death to see if there’s something there (so as to be allocated to the PS or our 53).

We don’t know what we don’t know, y’all.

…This one was a good example of the QB seeing the blitz, buying some time by drifting as the protection was a man short for the blitz, and just lays it out there for 88 to run under it. He might’ve had to fend off a tackle from the safety, but it’s minimum a 40-yarder.

Jaelan Phillips picked up a pair of sacks – my favorite was him incorporating a move that he was repping during individuals to bull rush then spin back inside. Early in team, he gets home and shuts down a play with that same move.

Edmonds had a couple of nice second-level pops, most notably behind lead blocks of Eichenberg and Ingold – but the D scored more wins. Wilkins, Baker, Sieler, Ginkel, Eguavoen, E. Campbell all had run stuffs. An Ingram pressure and X closing speed shut down a short pass for a TFL

Emmanuel Ogbah is such a force at resetting a pass pro call – he can walk an edge or guard back, he can shorten the corner and force a step up, consistently impacts the opposing pass game.

Braylon Sanders and River Cracraft made some plays today – Cracraft caught a chunk gain from Tua to start the practice along the sidelines then scored on a what looked like a bust as he’s turned free in the end zone for a 25-yard TD from Teddy.

Thomas Morstead hit 10-15 punts from the -40 – not live, no snap, just kicking… and they either went out of bounds at the 5, or checked up in that same territory.

Fullback Alec Ingold has yet to play in the preseason, and McDaniel says that position in itself helps everybody else on offense. They have studio apts for 230.00 a night with full kitchen and gas grill outside for your use. They also have chairs to take to beach which is only 30 yards away and bikes to ride if you want. No smoking anywhere on property. All rooms are on ground floor except a 2 bedroom suite on second floor with a private balcony patio, full kitchen and living room for 500.00 a night. Great for sharing with another couple. Lots of space but don’t get an efficiency room unless you are by yourself as they are cramped, and I don’t think they have a kitchen. Stick with a studio apt or the 2 bedroom.

My parents were holidaying on the Isle of White and mum went to the loo in the middle of the night, looked out of the bathroom window after a loud noise and the bedroom roof had been ripped off like the lid of a sardine tin from a neighbouring property and the couple were lying in bed thinking wtf!

Anyway, I digress, I’m in Manchester so over 200 miles away from that location but Kent (the garden of England) is beautiful. I visited loads of pubs down there with my ex who didn’t drink and her grandpa who loved his scrumpy cider. Great memories and the pubs you mentioned really are typical of a lot of village pubs down there, some in former oast houses (where they dried the hops) and I took a wee mental trip down memory lane as a result. So thanks for your post. 👍

Wyo, I meant to get back to the comment I made that you weren’t happy about but I never did. When I said the wheels on the bus go round and round, I didn’t mean it as a short bus or mocking anyone, it was from a Seinfeld episode where Jerry is trying to ignore the naked woman across the street during their bet who will masturbate first. He’s watching cartoons to keep his mind off of it. It was also more about how this blog goes in circles about the same stuff.

I came across this because I had a text file to reply to this and forgot about it. So here it is.

The Miami Dolphins have fielded calls on running back Myles Gaskin
    —————-
I sure hope not. Gaskin is a gamer and probably the ultimate 3rd-and-long RB.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just imagine what Gaskin can do behind our revamped O-Line.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who’s the source? I’d be surprised if Gaskin doesn’t make the team. Edmonds and Mostert are hand picked by McDaniel and Michel was available. Gaskin is one of those guys who earns his keep every year. I don’t see any other backs jumping this 4. Then a FB.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way I see it at RB is Edmonds will be given a chance to be a major snap guy both rushing and receiving. Then Mostert as a playmaker #2. Michel if he earns his keep as a guy who gives you some skill and thump. Gaskin gives you reliable.

  84. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gaskin is just a little more than a JAG, I’d rather trade him and put Ahmed on PS, then keep 3 rbs and fb

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Gaskin is better than Ahmed. Trade him for what, a 2023 6th or 7th round pick? I think Gaskin is a gamer even if a mediocre guy. It’s time to start winning! Deep teams win. We’ll see. We might see some surprises under McDaniel and Co.

  85. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Gaskin IS better than Ahmed, which is why they would shop him to see if they can get anything for him. Nobody is giving us anything for Ahmed. PLUS Gaskin will get poached off the PS in a minute, but not Ahmed.

Hall-of-Fame QB and broadcaster Len Dawson has passed away, according to his family. He was 87.

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Whether they keep Sony Michel is a factor, but he is an authentic thousand yard rusher in the NFL, just came off winning a Super Bowl, and was a first round pick. If you are going to show patience for a guy to find his fit in your scheme, that is a guy to take a chance on.
Gaskin’s skill set is redundant to Chase’s, which is good because that is what we want, but he was here, and McDaniel went out and hired THREE guys at his position, two of whom are exactly like Gaskin only faster.
    sooo …

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      My thoughts too

Gaskin is there for injury insurance, if he’s starting we’ve got issues

He’s at his best in 3rd down role, but he’s not better at it than Chase or Mostert, Michel has either lost a step or is uninterested in PS/camp

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do hear a whisper that McDaniel likes ZQ White, who btw SCORED, which is something our RBs epically failed to do (besides Duke) last year, whether running or receiving.
    IF
a position group must be adjusted due to carrying 3 QBs, possibly RB is the place the coaches want to scrimp. Then put “Dr.” White on the PS to call up in case of injury.

I know the Tua/MM love-in is well documented, but love this backing Tua gets.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tua has had to learn a very physically dangerous and mentally taxing job while fending off some of the most serious psycho-warp distractions of any young professional I’ve seen.
forced to replace a wildly popular Hero of the Common Man
multiple bosses (OCs) sometimes 2 at the same time
3 or 4 different business plans (or none)
an upline supervisor who didn’t love him and then got fired
a company boss openly publically seeking his replacement (illegally)
The 2 replacements being a GOAT and a top 5 HOF talent (would’ve been)
      a PR nightmare media shit-storm
a worst-in-class security and support team
      Armando
      Omar
and 5 thousand wannabe GMs all screaming negs
and a raging twitterverse debate about your professional abilities.
sheesh, try to keep your 22 year old mind on clear while
learning your job duties in that world!!

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

No doubt Naples. MM knows exactly what he’s doing on the man-management side of things. I always think the best man-managers don’t take the one-size-fits-all approach, even though some people like Flores.

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Michel might have been used as a decoy in PS2. His OC 2 years ago with the Patriots was standing right across the field as the HC of the Vegas team, so McDaniel would not be giving anything away to smash Sony into the interior of the OL.
Those plays where he got stuffed were about as vanilla as the NFL gets.
They were just plays to set up the next pass, maybe teach Eich something or practice the QB-Center exchange in such a down and distance as Connor needs reps.

I know Tua’s job is a dream job we all wish we had.
and all first jobs are rough
I thought I had it bad in my 20s starting out with a 40-mile commute.
What was your first job like?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My first job in the optical field was a major trip. Some of the funniest stories of things that happened in this field came from there. Really just crazy stuff.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’d love to hear some of those.
I knew I was in trouble when the guy who hired me said to drive 40 miles into Hellhole Swamp and turn left at the burned out wreck of a laundry truck in the weeds by the highway, and my job was at the end of that road.
This was a job no one else on earth wanted.

My first legal job was prosecuting child abuse and neglect cases in Brooklyn Family court. Did that for about 4 years and was thrilled to leave. It was not until my 3rd job about 8 years out of law school that I kind of found my path in my profession

  94. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

McDaniel said tight end Hunter Long “had his best week of practice last week and played very good [against the Raiders]. He started off really, really good in OTAs. Then there was a time when he wasn’t making that many plays in the run and pass game.

“His position coach, Jon Embree, had a heart-to-heart with him a week ago. And he really turned it up.”

My first job was as a dishwasher in a little family restaurant. It was a gourmet restaurant that had 6 platings per meal. Me and a three compartment sink from 5pm to 1am. Oh the memories!

I got paid $15 an hour at 15 YO which was more than school teachers made at the time.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

wow $15/hr and time to daydream and flirt with bored waitresses too? … That’s a damn good starter job!!

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

LOL did I mention it was me with a three compartment sink? I was go go go with angry waitresses needing a plate or a fork or what ever.

Ditto, but hole in the wall health food restaurant, worked 3 hours per night, actually worked about an hour (except Saturdays), ate pizza, drank apple juice and messed around with the waitresses, all of which I went to HS with and had known for years

$54 a week cash, less than a mile from home

My first job was working for a bully as a boss. Fortunately, the rest of the office were cool and on my side. The previous incumbent (still with the company) told me that my ex-boss accused him of dumb insolence. I asked what he said. He said he sat there and said nothing. I still piss my pants laughing at that today. Another of his ex-reports actually threw a telephone into a waste-paper bin in the office during a call. The ex-boss used to come into the office on Monday morning and say “fecking hell, I’m hitting that ball well”. He was as fat as butter, short, no doubt blessed with a tiny set of crown jewels and an opinionated wanker. I might be slightly biased as he was a Yorkshireman (as a Lancastrian myself and from the red rose county in terms of the war of the roses) but there is a song we sing to Yorkshire football fans ⚽.
“You go out, you drink 10 pints
    And you get really plastered
You go home, you beat your wife
    You big fat Yorkshire bastard”
Feel better getting that off my chest.

    btw UK
my home state of South Carolina has 2 counties right next to each other named York and Lancaster. They border the state of North Carolina right at the city of Charlotte where the Carolina Panthers play.
The 2 SC counties are considered to be part of Metro Charlotte.
Their county capitals are the towns of York and Lancaster.
I do not know if they have any holdover enmity from the Wars of the Roses,
because they are 200 miles away from my home town of Charleston.
