Preseason Finale – Eagles at Dolphins

So this is the last game the Miami Dolphins will be playing that won’t count in the standings. It will count, however, for those players desperately vying to grab a roster spot. The majority of the roster is probably accounted for, but there are probably a handful of bubble decisions that will be determined by performances in this last game. There will be a few positions where the depth will have to be figured out, most importantly DB, where the Dolphins have lost some depth players, and actually may not have their starting CB Byron Jones ready for Game 1 against the New England Patriots. At RB, no one back has looked particularly good in either game yet, so most of the work in practice will have determined the depth chart so far, plus, McD may just want to keep the Patriots guessing as to what our offense will actually be. WR is where a few potential depth guys have looked good, but considering we have the first 4 spots locked up with Hill, Waddle, Wilson and Ezukanma, add in the fact that we may carry 3 QB’s, plus at least one fullback, it’s possible only 5 WR’s make it, and not 6. Does Lynn Bowden Jr. make the cut, or perhaps Braylon Sanders, or River Cracraft, or veteran Mohammed Sanu?

Running back has been a tough one to figure. You would think you can write in Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel, because McD and Grier just brought them here. Myles Gaskin was here already, but he’s a guy that has produced too. Salvon Ahmed is too much like Gaskin, so I guess it will be either or, if one them makes the roster. Rookie ZaQuandre White hasn’t seen much action, just 2 carries for negative 1 yards. Gaskin leads the Dolphins with 39 yards on 8 carries. QB Skylar Thompson is 2nd with 26. In other words, we really haven’t seen enough to have any expectations. ZaQuandre White does have a 19 yard TD reception, so there’s that.

It has to be tempered because it’s preseason, but I like what I’ve seen of DE Porter Gustin, and I think he has a chance to stick. At LB, both Cameron Goode and 3rd RD draft pick Channing Tindall showed some positive things. Tindall is a lock, but Goode may find himself a spot on the roster as well. At CB, Mackensie Alexander is done, (that was quick!), so guys like Keion Crossen and longshot Kader Kohou have a chance because of the injury situation. Iggy seems to be on the outside looking in. Everything I’ve seen from this kid in this preseason tells me he’s a not an NFL player. We did well taking a shot with Nik Needham, I think one of the aforementioned guys is also going to get a shot.

At TE, there’s been lots of chatter about Mike Gesicki getting traded. I don’t see it happening, but I’m not against it if we get the right return. Gesicki is a one dimensional player at the moment, a talented one, but still one dimensional. He’s a receiver, and hasn’t seemed to have embraced the blocking aspect of the position. Durham Smythe can do both, but he’s not as good as a receiver as Gesicki. Long hasn’t really proved he’s great at anything, and Cethan Carter gives you H-back flexibility and is a strong blocker. I think to myself, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long and Cethan Carter don’t put any fear into any defense, and while Gesicki isn’t a great blocker, he’s a top 8-10 receiving TE. Tough call there, but if they can get a starter where we need it for Gesicki, or a 3rd RD pick in the 2023 draft, go for it.

On the O-line, we’ve been protecting LT Terron Armstead, and Larnel Coleman has been given a lot of playing time. Coleman has been good and bad, as expected. Coleman was a 7th RD pick last year, and he appears to be locked in as Armstead’s backup. The 5 we know will be here are Armstead, Eichenberg, Williams, Hunt and Jackson. The remaining guys are Greg Little, Solomon Kindley, Robert Jones, Michael Deiter, Adam Pankey, Kion Smith, Kellen Diesch and Blaise Andries. Due to the fact that Armstead is oft injured, Coleman seems to be safe. Greg Little was a 2nd RD pick back in ’19 for the Panthers, so he has some pedigree, but we haven’t seen anything from him here in MIA. Lots of decisions. Our special teams is set with K Jason Sanders, P Thomas Morstead, LS Blake Ferguson, and KR/PR Tyreek Hill, Raheem Mostert, Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland. Just stay healthy guys, the roster will work itself out!

      Wow
so what he is really saying is that Tua working against the other team’s ones (somewhat) would’ve had the highest QBR since 2000 (if only over a few attempts) if his backup had not done so well against the backups.

    I meant this

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Looking for perfection which is hard to do. It still went for 51 yards. We act like it was incomplete.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, looked at it 3 times, it was off to the side, which allowed only Tyreek to get it, but if it was thrown 70 yards over the top he could’ve hit him in stride.

Tua throws a very catchable ball, every deep pass doesn’t have to go for 6, I’d rather have 2 of 3 caught, then 1 of 3 and it be a 65 yard air pass TD

Stop bitching about a successful play, bet the Eagles weren’t saying it was a bad pass

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s the sign of greatness to not be satisfied with a 51-yard completion.
In Tua’s defense, I seem to remember that there was some pressure coming right in front of him, so that he could not risk taking the time to wind up.

Its PS, the game didn’t mean shit…tell that to Eagles fans, I’d bet there’s plenty of them, that are making excuses, and others, that are pulling their hair out

Sure Detroit went 4-0 in PS, then lost all 16 games. Couldn’t tell you how they won the games, but pretty sure they didn’t dominate anyone and won those games at the end with players, that didn’t make either squad

Winning as we did, even though it was mostly against backups means we destroyed a team we were supposed to destroy, if we were trying to win and didn’t dominate we’d have other issues

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Heard Gregg Little played very well tonight, after hearing he was pretty good before getting nicked up, so that’s a good sign and maybe sured up our swing tackle.

Don’t see too many holes or back up areas of need, even CB doesn’t look too bad, as long as our top 3 aren’t out an extended period of time, we can get by with what we have.

I see the AFC, other than the Bills, hovering between 9-12 wins, with no other dominant teams, maybe Cincinnati, but that might be a reach. The AFC West will be a dog fight every week, so don’t see a high win team there. The AFC North similar to the west. When there’s lots of teams in a conference, that appear to be pretty good, it usually means there’s not a lot of dominant teams.

Even Buffalo was dominant last year to start, but had to fight off the cheats at the end

All I know is this is our best team, since Marino was playing

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    WoodStrock? How about SkyVailoa

I’d think about bringing in Skylar, against Buffalo, if Tua can’t get it done early

Whatever it takes, just getter done

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why hasn’t anyone else gone undefeated? Consistency, not flashy play

Why did we win 7 in a row and 8 of 9 last year? Consistency, not flashy play

Why are we going to win 12 games this year? Consistency, not flash play

We don’t need the guy that throws a 70 air yard bomb to Hill one week, then 3 ints the next

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

First play of the game was 56 air yards, and Tua wasn’t exactly in perfect throwing position, so let’s put to rest Tua’s arm right now, he can throw it far enough to take advantage of what Hill brings deep

Against Buffalo and other teams, I’m pretty sure they aren’t going to be stacking the box out of the gate, but if they do they’re going to pay

  60. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Phelon, google “Wes Welker Poison Pill” Sir cheatsalot made the NFL institute a new rule that should have been self explanatory but wasn’t specifically spelled out. Smoking my pipe as I rewatch this morning so forgive my memory, but the Dolphins tendered Welker when his contract as an undrafted FA expired. They gave him an “Unheard of” 2nd round tender with the right to match any offer. Sir Cheatsalot made an offer with a “Poison Pill” in it for Miami. The contract offer was written that if Wes played more than two games in a season in Miami that his entire contract would be fully guaranteed (two games because the SB was to be played in Miami that year or the next) It wasn’t fair because a a NE player Wes would only ever play twice in Miami, one case if they made the SB. Miami would have to automatica fully guarantee his entire contract because half their game are played in Miami…….

The NFL later stepped in and said that NE cheated in intent, but the rule didn’t specifically prohibit it. Then they changed the rule to specificaly forbid it.

They threw in an extra 7th from NE to us for the trouble…..

  74. randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

PHELON; I’m a little disappointed you haven’t backed your opinion with the $50. –As I said earlier, I don’t believe Miami will be hosting any playoff games this season. They might get one of the later playoff spots, which would force them onto the road for that game. As we BOTH KNOW, Miami’s playoff win total ON THE ROAD is not great.

SO the $50 offer that says Miami won’t win a road playoff game still stands. In fact, I’ll DOUBLE THAT TO $100 IF YOU PREFER.

Hard to argue against that, either Sherfield or Sanu, because they’re the MM blockers he covets, but Cracrafty has an always open feeling to him, that I like

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It was just preseason, but how do you really take anything good out of this performance by Philly, other than the RB Huntly?

For us it sure beats what Philly has to deal with today

Gregg Little seems to have granted my wish of Larnell not making the 53

Eguavoen seems to have done just enough at the witching hour to again make the 53, although it’s time to cut him loose and give someone else a shot, like Goode or Gustin

Finally saw something from Michel, even though his ypc were low he did have the short yardage carries we need

Several of the highlights featured either Carter or Smythe playing FB, even when they didn’t get the block, they got in the way enough to make the play go. Imagine what a real FB will do

I’m all in on SkyVailoa, both continue to look great

OL finally came to play last night, Jackson on the sack seemed to have given up

With only Needham as our only starting CB on the field the rest seemed to have held their own. We need Jones back for week 2, not really so worried about him week 1

    Nice

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Is that allowed?

Is Tua allowed to have a clean pocket?

Shouldn’t there be a holding penalty or something, because we obviously can’t pass block

Does the recent retirement announcement of JC. Tretter explain the reason why we didn’t sign him?

Hey Rensek, nope, it’s actually the other way around. Tretter retired because no team showed an interest in signing him this offseason after the Cleveland Browns released him, and he’s probably not wrong when he suggests his role as NFLPA president and his outspokenness about off-the-field issues played a role in that. There’s an interesting story on SI.com about Tretter where he addresses his retirement and a comment he once made that, “My NFLPA job is gonna end my career well before my knees end my career.”

  85. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

On the Tua sack, the way I saw it Jackson had the rusher pushed past the pocket, Tua moved out of the pocket because he felt the inside pressure and moved into the sack. I didn’t really think Jackson was that bad on the play.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He wasn’t that bad, the point was Jackson quit on the play, if he had stayed at least in the chase Tua would’ve had a place to go, but with no other blockers in his way the DE had an easy sack

Tua fdup and so did Jackson, but only a little bit

It’s 1 sack, no big deal

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Agreed, not a big deal, we just talking analysis of a single down. Tim isn’t on right now, so we don’t have to defend ourselves for analyzing a negative play 😉

I put the sack more on Tua. He got happy feet because of inside pressure, whereas Jackson pushed the rusher up the field past the pocket and when the rusher got the edge Tua was right there because he moved into his path. I think Tua still had time in the pocket. Just the way I saw it though; the coaches might see it closer to your view and give each player some responsibility.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        😁 Tim

Dolphins with only 8 penalties in 3 games.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Shows good coaching, and not much need to commit them, because you’re overmatched, like a rusher or wr running free

OD – Sorry, stepped away for a bit. Since I made the bet, yes I am in, $50 Miami wins a play off game. And if you want – $50 bucks says they win the division.

#Patriots rookie WR Tyquan Thornton underwent surgery Monday to repair a fractured clavicle, per source. Recovery time should be 6-8 weeks from the procedure but could vary depending on healing and re-acclimation to football. 2nd round pick still set to help offense this year

riiiiight … you mean after a broken collar bone?
and the doc says he must “re-acclimate” to football?
Can you read “may be season-ending or even career-ending”
      in that term?
I hope the young man is ok and all, but
I have rarely heard of a casual injury needing “re-acclimation.”
That was their speed guy, too.
I hope the patsies* go 6-10,
so they suck but don’t get a great draft pick.
