Miami Dolphins Training Camp doesn’t start until August 2nd, the FIFA World Cup is winding down, the NY Knicks won their first NBA Championship since 1973, so this is a quiet relaxing time for sports. MLB is approaching the All Star break, which will really grind the sports scene to a halt. It’s all good, summer is here, and this is the time to chill, enjoy the weather and the long days, and not worry too much about the sports scene. We had some record heat in the Northeast exceeding 100 degrees at least twice this past week leading up to the 250th Celebration of America. No matter what side of the political aisle you sit, America is still the best country in the world and don’t forget it!
I’ve seen all the NFL team predictions and just laugh. To me, predicting how teams are going to finish in the standings before training camp starts is very much like placing draft grades on teams for the players they drafted. None of it means a thing. I really have no idea how many games we’ll win this season, and will continue to feel that way until I see them practice, play a couple of preseason games, and then at least a few regular season games, and even then, injuries can change things immediately. Honestly, we have a whole lot of question marks all over the place on offense and defense, even before we sprinkle in all the new draftees, including the first 2 picks, RD 1 (#12) LG Kadyn Proctor, RD 1 (#27) CB Chris Johnson, and then RD 2 (#43) LB Jacob Rodriguez. While all of them figure to get substantial playing time, our 2nd RD pick LB Jacob Rodriguez who brings tons of excitement is behind some excellent veteran players such as ILB Jordyn Brooks, ILB Tyrel Dodson and ILB Willie Gay. It is possible one of them is traded which would make more opportunities available for Rodriguez much sooner, but that hasn’t happened yet, and Jordyn Brooks may well get an extension, which then would make one of the other aforementioned guys Dodson or Gay more expendable.
Back to those question marks. Yes, we drafted an OL early in OT/OG Kadyn Proctor. We saw last season how the best laid plans sometimes don’t necessarily work out, and last years trade up for OG Jonah Savaiinaea was simply a failure. His play was consistently poor except for a couple of flashes near the end of the season. He will be counted on once again, but this season at RG, where he played at Arizona. We drafted much later on, in RD 6 another OG, RD 6 (#200), DJ Campbell, from Texas. Campbell is a 4 year starter that could probably jump right in and play if needed, so Savaiinaea had better do more than just flash occasionally and play some physical ball rather than resemble a bull fighter or a turnstile. Same goes for rookie Kadyn Proctor, and then of course with RT Austin Jackson, can he stay healthy enough to play most of the season. We do have some depth guys like Jamaree Salyer from the Chargers and Charlie Heck from the Bucs, but it would be wonderful to see Paul, Proctor, Brewer, Savaiinaea and Jackson play 17 strong games together. I can’t remember the last time that occurred.
As far as the rookies, which rookie other than or even including the top 3 picks will have the biggest impact, and by that I mean positive impact? I’m hoping that Proctor is a real difference maker, a guy who is controlling the LOS, paving holes for Achane and our other backs and keeping defenders off of QB Malik Willis, or whoever is playing QB. Willis will be the man, unless he isn’t because he’s not getting it done or he’s injured. Last year’s 7th RD pick, QB Quinn Ewers showed he’s ready to start and should serve as the primary backup for Malik Willis. CB Chris Jones from what i’ve read and heard will be playing a combination of perimeter and slot CB, so he will be on the field an awful lot. I think he’s going to be a good player for us. I also think the much maligned WR Caleb Douglas, RD 3 (#75) will get his chances to make an impact in the passing game. We have a few Swiss Army knife types in LB/S Kyle Louis, LB/DE Trey Moore and I’m kind of interested to see if TE Seydou Traore makes the roster. I think 3rd RD pick (#87) TE Will Kacmarek will be on the field a ton, and then there’s TE Greg Dulcich. There’s also TE Ben Sims who’s started 8 games, but has played 45 games over 3 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and then most recently, the Minnesota Vikings.
Which young veteran players take that next step? Will it be DE/OLB Chop Robinson who took a step or two backwards last season? RG Jonah Savaiinaea at RG, who seemingly could only take step forward, not backwards. How will the trio of defensive linemen we drafted fare, DT Kenneth Grant, DT Jordan Phillips and DT Zeek Biggers? Will young CB Juju Brents be able to stay healthy and use his length to be a legit CB? Will either of the two backup RB’s Jaylen Wright or Ollie Gordon show they’re more than just a 4 or 5 carry a game RB? Will WR Malik Washington continue to be an important cog in the passing game? Now that RB De’Von Achane got his contract, will he be asked to do even more than his career best 1838 total yards from scrimmage? Will TE Greg Dulcich really be the big receiving TE most of you guys think he will be after never catching more than 33 passes over his 4 year career with 31 games played and 13 starts? Can DE Josh Uche who played for the Patriots and Eagles be a pass rush threat fro the Dolphins? Like I said, lots of questions, and we have a long way to go to get some answers. In the meantime, enjoy the good weather and mostly the long days of summer!

What may come as a surprise to some, though, is that ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes that three current Miami Dolphins players are worth a first-rounder.
In a recent article, he cites defensive tackle Kenneth Grant, offensive tackle Patrick Paul, and guard Kadyn Proctor as all holding such great value. But notably, none of running back De’Von Achane (who just ran for more than 1,300 yards in 2025), Jordyn Brooks (who was the NFL’s league-leader in tackles in 2025), and center Aaron Brewer (named an All-Pro in 2025) made the cut.

We are less than two weeks away from Dolphins training camp. Over the next few days, we’re previewing the Dolphins 91-man roster, position-by-position. Today, we venture into the tight end room.
Tight Ends
One of the biggest hidden gems produced from the 2025 Miami Dolphins is back for the 2026 campaign. Greg Dulcich leads a remade tight end room that features a pair of draft picks, Will Kacmarek and Seydou Traore, and two free agent acquisitions, Ben Sims and Cole Turner.
The Cast (in numerical order):
The 2025 arc of Greg Dulcich is the quintessential reason the NFL is the most unpredictable sport in existence. Waived by the Giants at the conclusion of training camp, Dulcich signed with the Miami practice squad, where he spent the first seven weeks of the season. He played in every game the rest of the way and was a top-10 tight end in receiving yards from Week 14 on. He produced 16 receptions on just 18 targets for 222 yards and a touchdown over the final five games of the season.
Dulcich’s performance down the stretch caught the attention of General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, who prioritized bringing Dulcich back as an unrestricted free agent.

Dulcich is a gifted route runner with a brute-force mentality as a ball carrier. He holds his own as an inline blocker, though that’s a role in which two new Dolphins definitively excel.
Ben Sims arrives on a free agent deal from Minnesota. He was drafted by Green Bay in 2023 as part of a three tight end class and it didn’t take long for him to make his presence known blocking off the edge.
Pull up Ohio State tape from the last two seasons and something similar will stand out. Will Kacmarek was one of the most punishing blockers at the position in all of college football. He can get out in space and play downhill at the point of attack.
“He’s an unsung hero,” Sullivan said. “He’s a grimy, dirty, bite your face off type of dude. He’s going to be a difference maker for us in the run game which allows your offense to do so many different things. It just opens up so many doors for the offensive coordinator, the way they call the game. And he’s elite – I think he’s elite as a blocker.”
Miami selected another tight end well in the fifth round, selecting Mississippi State’s Seydou Traore. A participant in the International Player Pathway Program, Traore was born in France and raised in England. He’s an explosive option in the passing game who fulfilled a variety of blocking roles for the Bulldogs last season. He totaled 1,482 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in his four-year college career.
Cole Turner was also a fifth-round pick. Taken by the Commanders in 2022, Turner spent last season with the Titans before signing a futures deal with Miami in January. He’s caught 13 passes for 143 yards in 23 career games.

The Dolphins’ rebuild is bound to uncover another hidden gem that the league overlooked. Good money is on this EDGE rusher out of the University of Wisconsin.

One silver lining of the Miami Dolphins’ rebuild in 2026 is that there are many spots up for grabs. When there’s competition all around, that’s football at its purest form. That kind of environment is sure to attract the hungriest and grittiest of players — count Mason Reiger among them. Reiger joins an edge room where there are only two incumbents: Chop Robinson and Cameron Goode.
In other words, he’s got a real chance. How does a guy go from putting up 5.0 sacks as a starter for the Wisconsin Badgers, the punctuation on a four-year career that saw him put up 13.0 sacks total, to undrafted? Injuries. Reiger is a true warrior. At one point, he was gently nudged to consider retirement from the sport. Evidently, he wasn’t hearing any of that noise.
His final year in Wisconsin earned him a contract with a hefty $175,000 guarantee. He asked Miami to show him the money, and they obliged. Now, with training camp right around the corner, we at the Phin Phanatic sought some answers on what kind of person the Dolphins were getting with Reiger, in addition to the menace we can all see on tape. We phoned Badgers associate head coach / outside linebackers coach Matt Mitchell for an interview to give us the skinny on the Dolphins’ rookie EDGE.
Mason Reiger’s position coach Matt Mitchell thinks the Miami Dolphins got the player with the “highest motor as there was in college football”
PP: As a person, what should Dolphins fans know about Mason Reiger as he begins his NFL career? How do those qualities set him up for success?
MM: “[I’ve] been coaching college football for 25 years. I love that kid. He’s been through a lot of adversity in his life, has overcome a lot, and a consequence of that is that he’s incredibly gritty. Nothing’s going to break him. Any adversity that comes his way, he’s never going to let anything get him down. He’s just a fighter in terms of that [grit].”
“He’s also a great person, a really high-character person, [and] a great guy. I only had him for one year but he came in the locker room and just [made] an impact. He’s got a really optimistic viewpoint in how he takes things on, so it’s really unique. He fights, scratches, claws, has a lot of determination, a lot of grit, but is also super positive.”
“Not in a disrespectful manner, but he doesn’t care that he was [undrafted]. Whether [he’d been] a higher draft pick, mid-round, late round, or a free agent, he’s going to come in and he’s not going to take a backseat to anybody. He’s going to fight and he’s going to earn a spot.”
PP: When did you realize Mason had a legitimate chance at the NFL? Was there a specific game, practice, or moment that convinced you?
MM: “He was coming off an injury at Louisville [when] we got him here in January. He didn’t go through spring [practice]. Fall camp for us, [he] just made a ton of plays. I think he’s got a chance too because of how smart he is. He’s the coach’s dream just because he picks things up the first time. He’s not a guy that has to do a bunch of walk-throughs and things. He’s got a good feel [and] he picks things up fast. We started to get a feel in fall camp like this guy’s different.”
PP: What do you believe is the most underrated part of his game, or the trait that will translate quickest to the NFL?
MM: “I think it really has to do with his attention to detail in regards to preparation. He’s going to be a guy both from a mental standpoint for an opponent and then knowing everything [matchup-wise]. He’s going to study a ton of tape on tackles and tight ends to know their strengths and weaknesses and then attack those.”
“He’s also really in tune with physical preparation. The weight room and all that stuff but more importantly the rehab and taking care of his body. If he happens to make it there and starts getting some money, he’s not going to be foolish with things and he’s not a big partier or anything like that. I think he can have the disciplined lifestyle [NFL players] live — both in the building and outside of it.”
PP: If you could tell Dolphins fans one thing about Mason Reiger that they won’t find in a scouting report, what would it be?
MM: “[Mason was] as high a motor, as high an effort guy as there was in college football. Watch the tape and like the Michigan game, [he’s] chasing things down from the backside and all of the things he does. He plays relentless with as high a motor as anything. I think his effort is really going to [stand] out to [fans] as a guy who plays as hard as anybody you’ve ever seen play.”
PP: Is there a story, moment, or memory that you think best captures who Mason is, either as a player or as a person? It could be funny, work-related, or simply something that stuck out to you.
MM: “I just think it’s kind of funny that he’s got a cat. You wouldn’t think an NFL EDGE player that played in the Big Ten would be a cat guy, but he’s a cat guy. That’d be the one thing.”
You heard it here first, Dolphins fans. The EDGE rusher with nine lives to survive a brutal injury is a cat guy. How remarkably appropriate. On a more serious note, Reiger has all the tools. At 6’5″ and 251 pounds, he looks the part. His play on the field demonstrates the pass-rush ability to get it done at the next level. Now it’s all about letting nature take its course. If Reiger rises to the challenge, the Dolphins may have their next Cameron Wake right beneath their noses.

Let’s get the kicker off the board! The Dolphins are one of the few teams with two veteran kickers on their roster, so Gonzalez is an easy pick for us after hitting 86.4% of his attempts last season in Atlanta. Salyer is a swing tackle who did a solid job at left tackle as a rookie in 2022 with the Chargers; having a sixth or seventh lineman with real experience on the blind side is a relative luxury.
Their list is flawed though. They have 5 rookies on the list. How can 5 rookies who have never played an NFL snap make a list like this? They don’t know if they will be any good or a bust.

The Miami Dolphins and linebacker Jordyn Brooks have agreed to a three-year, $51.3 million extension with $35 million guaranteed, agent Erik Burkhardt told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
That’s a good deal at 17.1 million per year average for his production/play.

is it the overall talent the team brought in?
is it getting steals (players taken later than expected, like Chris Bell or Tunsil)?

Haven’t seen a manatee leave a wake but sightings of them up here are very rare. I have seen one here in the 20 years I have been here.

So, being on this list, he still counts against the roster but he can be elevated at any time during TC.
If he is still rehabbing when it comes to final cuts, they can move him to the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List and he won’t count against the 53 on final cut day. Then he can be added to the 53 at any time he is ready.

That’s exactly where I’m at on the Defensive side of the ball at this time. And I’d rather draft an EDGE or CB, as opposed to paying through the nose via FA.
If Haf is worth his weight in gold, he may be able to draft a day 3 Safety in ’27 who could become very good, as well.

Even if Sully KILLED the Draft in ’26, it’s clear to see there’s more to address. The wisdom is that we couldn’t possibly address all of our areas of need in one mere draft class… and that’s true.
My best guess and hope is that after the ’27 NFL Draft, Sully/Haf will have us a perennial winner again.
There will be some growing pains, but we’re not too far off if all goes well.

LOL, you know I can’t help it. Yes, we don’t know what we got in this years draft class and it will take more than 1 season to actually know on most of them.
Though, we can see where the needs are when you look at who is under contract in 2027. When you eliminate the 1 year contracts or those in the final year, we have a huge need at Safety, CB, Edge, RT, TE and a QB to develop.
Even though we will have money to spend in free agency next year, I do not see us spending a lot on any one player. We have guys like Patrick Paul, Chop Robinson and Malik Washington who will need extensions next year.

I have a friend in Cape Coral who uses a custom built Gheenoe Lo Tide 25. He likes fishing by himself so didn’t need anything bigger he says.
Personally, with the way the weather changes, I would rather have something in the 17′-20′ range from Beavertail or Hewes.
Of course with my hybrid 22′, I don’t need one. I can go in 14″ with 2 guys, half tank of gas using my Atlas hydraulic jack plate with no worries.
14.5′ Boggy Creek Diablo. Like your buddy, it’s just me fishing for the most part. Boggy Creeks are made up in Jacksonville.
I live on the water across from the Weeden Island Preserve. Lot of channels and bays back in the mangrove islands, but you need to be able to pole around. Snook, reds, and trout galore as well as mangrove snappers and sheepshead.
This damn tropical storm messed up my golf plans today. I thought it would be out of here by now.
Area’s of need next year (defense):
Safety – We only have Trader, 5th round undersized rookie Michael Taaffe, undersized UDFA Louis Moore and Omar Brown under contract in 2027. Brown only played 24 snaps (mostly ST’s) for GB in 2024 and spent last year on the Packer’s IR. I guess Hafley likes him.
CB – Though we have like 11 on the roster right now, we only have 3 under contract for 2027. That would be rookie Chris Johnson, Jason Marshall and journeyman Miles Battle who probably won’t make the 53 as he is 11th on current depth chart. That would leave just 2 CB’s under contract in 2027. Hopefully Juju stays healthy and they can re-sign him. Maybe Alex Austin who moved ahead of Storm Duck will be decent and they re-sign him also. Right now, CB is looking fugly next year.
Edge – Basically, we will have Chop and 3 rookies in Trey Moore, Mason Rieger and Max Llewellen. Seth Coleman and Rodney McGraw are also under contract in 2027 but they likely will be cut this year as they are #9 and #10 on the current depth chart.
Area’s of need next year (offense):
RT/OT – We only have Patrick Paul and UDFA rookie RT Kevin Cline. Yeah, we do have Kayden Proctor who I had hoped could stay at LG, but that is it just those 3. There is a sliver of hope on Cline, but he is currently the 5th OT on the depth chart and the #3 RT behind Charlie Heck. If he is cut, we probably won’t get to sign him to the practice squad as he was also the 20th overall pick in the CFL. He may go there instead.
IOL – Considering the possible move of Proctor to RT, we only have at OG Jonah, rookie DJ Campbell and Proctor’s current backup on the depth chart Josh Priebe who was on our PS last year but has played no NFL snaps. At Center, we have Brewer and UDFA rookie Jim Bonifas.
TE – Only TE’s under contract next year are the 2 rookies in Will Kacmarek and Seydou Traore.
I believe Dulcich is going to have a good year, so Paul and Dulcich would be my top 2 to re-sign next off-season. As for Chop, he really needs to show me something this season, so he’s not on the list yet.
As for next year’s needs, I’m just grouping them right now with Edge, DB, and OL as my top 3. I’m not going to put QB on the need list until I see what we have in Willis.

pressure isn’t going to be great just because of talent, its going to have to come from the scheme. If we blitz too much the back end will pay the price, too little and they’ll pay the price. There has to be a fine line and things must go in our favor. That’s if you believe they (FO/Hafley cares). I know Hafley does, but they may convince him otherwise
I think the season will be more evaluating talent, then scheming to cover up the lack of experience. What do I know though, being new they may pull out all the stops and coach like we can make the playoffs

Jordyn Brooks, No. 7 linebacker
Brooks was picked by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2020 draft. After a few successful seasons for the Seahawks, Brooks suffered a torn ACL in 2022. He then moved to Miami and in 2024 signed a three-year contract with the Dolphins. While in Miami, he earned a first-team All-Pro and scored a 5.9% stop percentage. Brooks was the first Dolphin player to lead the NFL in tackles since 2006. Brooks just received extended his contract another three years and $51.3 million on July 21.
“Brooks has a skill set similar to Demario Davis when he was young — really strong, fast, physical, can play in space, very good tackler,” an NFL coordinator said.
De’Von Achane, No. 8 running back
Achane was part of the 2023 draft, selected in the third round by the Miami Dolphins. He has gained more that 4,000 scrimmage yards and has a career yard per rush of 5.62. That is the most by any running back in NFL history with 500 attempts. He will be with the Dolphins for at least four more years as he signed a four-year, $64 million extension.
According to a veteran NFL defensive coach, Achane is “an explosive play waiting to happen. Elite receiver out of the backfield.”
Aaron Brewer, No. 10 center
Brewer secured the 10th spot in the top interior offensive lineman. Brewer’s story is a bit out of the ordinary, as he went undrafted in 2020. He signed a free agency contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2020 and remained there for four years. Brewer then signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Dolphins, and recently resigned to continue playing for Miami until 2029. He recently became part of a second team All-Pro as well as a finalist for protector of the year award. “Most underrated player in the league,” an NFC executive said while another NFL coordinator added, “He’s very scheme specific — but his twitchiness and explosiveness are off the charts.”

BBM really likes Edge Clev Lubin from Louisville. He’s 6’3, 250, projected 4.62 forty and has a very high pass rush grade of 92 and 92.7 over the last 2 seasons. In 2025 he had 61 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 8.5 sacks, 67 QB pressures, 3 FF, 5 PD’s and a very high pass rush win rate of 31.34%.
He sheds blocks well and has a good run defense grade also. What stands out even more is that he has a high coverage grade for an Edge at 83.6. He’s able to cover RB’s and TE’s in the flat, wheel routes, etc.
Get this, one site said his best fit would be “Miami Dolphins under Jeff Hafley and their wide 9 alignment.” They said “Lubin’s versatility would fit nicely in Hafley’s system”.

Makes me wonder if that gives a certain edge to some QB’s come draft time. As in Manning over the better arm in Donte Moore.
He has not coached a game yet as HC but there are tendencies that Hafley has that I do NOT like and that worry me.
I HATE the wide-9 formation. It has proven again and again to be too easy to run on. But that’s the system being reported that Hafely likes to run.
I do NOT want a scrambling QB, but that seems to be the direction they are headed in.
I do NOT like all the tweener sized guys they are going with (That may change with more drafts, but as it stands there are too many too small guys on defense IMO) If the tweeners get bullied because they area small it will be an issue.
I don’t expect much from this team this season, but I hope JEC and Hafley put it together well enough to change my thinking. I doubt it, but I am told I am a negative nelly.

There is speculation out there that the dolphins are going to change their logo next year. The reason behind the thinking is that the NFL is releasing “stitched” uniforms again after not offering them for a while because they are expensive to make. The NFL announced that fans will be able to purchase “stitched” uniforms for 30 teams. The Dolphins and the Saints are not on the list. WHY? The speculators say it’s because the NFL is not going to put out a jersey that will be obsolete next year, so the Dolphins and Saints are PROBABLY making changes.
The NFL only allows teams to change jerseys after a 5 year period. We made the last changes..let me count…OH 5 years ago. Hmmm

We got one of them in Mike Gesicki (yay!). Unfortunately, regime change and new Offenses rendered him obsolete being he couldn’t block (that’s not what he was drafted to do).
Wish we would have landed Brenton Strange.
And of course, we ALL loved Tyler Warren… but it didn’t make ANY kind of sense to take him in the first round, with all of the holes we were trying to plug.
Know who has been compared to Tyler Warren on MANY occasions? JALIN CONYERS.
Conyers is an even better OZB blocker than Warren. I can’t imagine how incredible our 2-TE sets would be with Will Kacmarek and Jalin Conyers.

I’m just going off what we’ve heard all offseason… that Malik Willis seems to have developed chemistry with Greg Dulcich. What’s more, I don’t know that we have a better receiving TE than Dulcich at the moment.
Figure Dulcich is going to get a lot of targets in year 1 of this rebuild and become Willis’ safety blanket, along with Achane in the passing game.
Again, I think PFF is missing the mark. Also of note? Dulcich was a top-5 TE over the last month of the ’25 season. Additionally, Dulcich was the first FA Sully and Haf re-signed.
IMO, Dulcich should not have been omitted by PFF as a top-32 TE in the NFL heading into 2026: total snub.
I don’t do ‘fantasy football’, but if I did, I’d seriously look at acquiring Dulcich. Who catches TDs in the end zone? TEs.

M13, put CB Kelly Jones on your watch list. He’s an interesting CB prospect at 6’4, 195 with a projected 4.42 forty. He’s not elite, IMO, even though PFF has him graded as a late 1st rounder. I am thinking mid 2nd round.

Is Sean Duggan Miami’s Next Big Thing?
In September 2017, the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator, Sean Duggan, was in his second season as Hawaii’s linebackers coach. The Rainbow Warriors were 1–0 after a 38–35 win in the opener against UMass and were returning home to Honolulu to face Western Carolina, who were kicking off their own campaign.
He was standing quietly on the sideline watching Catamounts kicker Joshua Gibson line up for a field goal when sophomore defensive tackle Viane Moala broke through the line and blocked the kick. The sideline erupted, and Duggan, still just 24 years old at the time, ran onto the field to chest-bump the 6-foot-7, 304-pounder from American Samoa.
Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go as planned.
Moala’s helmet hit Duggan’s arm and knocked him to the ground, dislocating his elbow and fracturing his wrist. Although he stayed on the sideline for the rest of the game, he was forced to have surgery, returning to coaching at the Rose Bowl against UCLA the following week in a sling.
I tell this story because it underscores the sort of person Duggan is: young, high-intensity, full gas, no brakes. But also mature beyond his years – despite the chest bump – cerebral, adaptable, creative, and an outstanding communicator. He was widely viewed as Boston College’s most effective recruiter during his time there, and he’s always gelled easily with star players. Duggan is Jeff Hafley’s eyes and ears, his consigliere, having worked under him as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator at Boston College, and again as a defensive assistant and linebackers coach with the Packers.
As ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques reported back in February, hiring Duggan was a non-negotiable for Hafley. “Sean’s coming with me,” wrote Louis-Jacques about a conversation Miami’s new head man had with his former boss, Matt LaFleur.
Then, after the draft, Hafley underlined why he pushed so hard for him, explaining the importance of his new DC to Richard Sherman whilst a guest on his podcast: “I got a chance to bring Sean, which is so huge for me because he’s been with me for eight straight years. He knows the scheme inside and out, he knows how I think, he knows what I want. So what he’s done is organized it all for me. He’s presenting in front of the defense so I can go and work with the offense and be the head coach. I think he’s a star, and I’m very grateful he’s with me.”
So why this sudden burst of love for the 33-year-old?
Well, earlier this week, the excellent Jourdan Rodrigue wrote a piece in The Athletic about the potential breakout assistant coaches heading into the 2026/27 season. And right there was the man many observers believe will be a head coaching candidate in the NFL in the not-too-distant future: Sean Duggan.
“It’s always good to keep an eye on any assistants a new head coach brings with him to another team,” wrote Rodrigue. “And the Dolphins’ Jeff Hafley has clearly identified Duggan as one of ‘his’ guys. Duggan, now a coordinator for the first time at the pro level, was both a defensive assistant and a linebackers coach in Green Bay and also worked with Hafley previously at Boston College. The Dolphins are rebuilding, but Duggan could get some attention if the defense exceeds expectations.”
Now, the line, “if the defense exceeds expectations,” is doing some seriously heavy lifting because the expectations are pretty low for a unit lacking in star power, especially off the edge and across the secondary. But Duggan will get something of a pass if the unit is poor because he’s the defensive co-ordinator in name only: Hafley will call the plays and oversee the unit. So, in many regards, it’s a win-win for the former BC linebacker, and there are those in the building who are in lockstep with Rodrigue and believe that, within a couple of seasons, the Dolphins may find themselves fighting to retain one of the brightest young coaches and communicators in the game.
Just don’t let him chest-bump anyone!
