Wedge Scouting Report: Amari Cooper

USP NCAA FOOTBALL: TEXAS A&M AT ALABAMA S FBC USA ALWedge ID

Oh…excuse me Earthling, I didn’t know you were there.  I was just polishing my ship’s self destruct button.  There is nothing more reliable for organism death than a self destruct button right?  I cover the label with a little tape that reads “turbo” and let another alien borrow my ship.  Well you can guess what happens when they want to go fast.

Enough about polishing weapons though…instead, let’s talk about polished receivers.  Is there any receiver in this draft more polished than Amari Cooper?

AmariCooper6

Cooper does everything well!  He catches the ball well, he runs fast, he runs clean routes, he attacks the ball in the air, he’s quick, he’s physical.

During the College football season, most experts expected Cooper to be the first receiver off the board.  But lately – not so much.  So what gives?  Well Probably nothing, teams have probably just become a little more enamored with bigger and faster receivers.  Cooper is probably still the most NFL ready receiver in this draft.

Alabama v Auburn

Cooper was extremely productive at Alabama.  In three years he compiled 3,463 yards and 228 catches.  He had an eye opening 31 TDs as well.  Impressive right?  Cooper’s actually been the Crimson Tide’s #1 receiver since he was a freshman in 2012.  Considering the incredible talent at Alabama, that’s a heck of an achievement.  Cooper’s career was capped off as a runner up for the Heisman Trophy and the winner of the Belitnikoff Trophy.

AmariCooper2

Expect Cooper to make an immediate impact in the NFL.  What I really like about Cooper is his physicality.  He’s not afraid to mix it up with DBs and sometimes in the NFL, that is what it takes.  You don’t hear as much about Cooper’s combine or Pro Day numbers, but he did run a 4.42 40 yard dash.  He also had the top performance at the combine in the 3-cone drill and the 20-yard shuttle.  Cooper is very agile.

AmariCooper4

Somehow all these numbers haven’t been talked about as much as the Kevin White or Breshad Perriman numbers.  Which is why Cooper is a sneaky but reliable weapon.  Kind of like that Self Destruct Button I was polishing.  If Cooper was an Alien Weapon of Destruction he would be a Tricky Self Destruct Button.

“Hey Bob, want to take my new ship out for a drive.  You are gonna love the Turbo Speed!”

Shhhhhh – Don’t tell Bob!

    Nice write up
I can see us going WR in the first
Not sure one of the big 3 will be there at 14

Interesting talk lately about a trade up
For one of the prime guy’s
Not sure we can afford to do that
But I would rather go for the best available at 14

Can’t fill every hole in one draft, get the best player you can in the 1st
Just the way I see it
    Build through the draft
    Quality over quantity

    Have a great day everyone

  2. jetsssuck says:

I like this guy but I don’t think he will be available unless we trade up.

Soak your own beans instead of using canned then follow the recipe it probably wouldn’t be much different.

pressure cooker is the best way to cook dry beans. Their are tons of great recipes and nutritional benefits to using a pressure cooker.

  3. Mike E. says:

Excellent job Piggy! We may become enamored with the other guys, but the reality of it is that cooper is the best WR right now in this draft. Is it possible that Kevin White or Devante Parker, or Breshad Perriman, or even those 2nd tier guys like Strong, Coates, Agholor, Dorsett etc. have better careers? Sure it is, but if you want a WR that’s ready to go immediately and contribute like a veteran, it’s Amari Cooper.

    • Mike E. says:

Hopefully, they don’t kick the shit out of us. Last year we took one, but that game was officiated completely in our favor. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that EVERY call went our way that game.

  4. Tim Knight says:

Good stuff, Piggy. Cooper is going to be a good one.

  5. dbolt48 says:

Oh boo-hoo. “My name is Rex Ryan & I enjoy M&M’s, toe sex, Mark Sanchez tat’s, but I don’t like the Jets anymore because they did me dirty. Eventhough in an uncapped year they illegally spent an extra $20 million to get to a super bowl & didn’t make it under my stewardship it was everyone else’s fault but my own. Damn-it after I finish this pile of wings and jerk that bull off over there I’m going to the airport to yell at every outbound flight just to show how much I hate those dirty Jet bastards.”

  6. Mike E. says:

There’s D-Bolt! Where ya been fuckface? lol

  7. dbolt48 says:

Been busy once the weather turned. Works picked up and outdoor projects also

I do pop in here to take a quick glimpse to see what’s happening and saw last night you offered some bean soup and a hand job to FFR when you visit Fla next time. You’re a trooper👍

No shit Dbolt? I am the chief estimator for a commercial GC. Takeoffs are soooo mind numbing sometimes. It’s like playing where’s waldo all day. 😉

I KNOW I saw one more of that door type. Where is is? LOL

  11. Tim Knight says:

Being that Rock is the chief estimator this is how he looks when he meets with clients.

  12. Rockphin says:

I am planning on taking a trip to Cuba this year. I am looking for someone to go with. Someone with Scuba certification preferred…..Since I travel on a Canadian passport I have always been able to go but I have just started seriously thinking about it recently.

  13. Mike E. says:

    Chief looks like Ben Stiller

  14. BoulderPhinfan says:

nice job piggy. One lucky team will take cooper. Probably the raiders.

  15. Mike E. says:

OK, so at #14, if these players are still on the board, who do you take?

    Louisville WR Devante Parker
    LSU OT/OG La’el Collins
    Mich.St CB Trae Waynes
    Georgia RB Todd Gurley
    Nebraska DE/LB Randy Gregory
    Alabama SS Landon Collins
    Central Florida WR Breshad Perriman

  16. Ken says:

Nice job Piggy me likey Cooper

  17. Mike E. says:

Instead of “completely agreeing with Tim”, channel your inner Hulk and make a fucking decision! lol

  18. Mike E. says:

We can’t hand in a card that says Devante Parker or La’el Collins

  19. Mike E. says:

Either Parker or Collins works for me too, I’d be happy with either.

  20. Tim Knight says:

Mike E running the draft and finding out the player he wanted was just picked.

  21. Mike E. says:

    Ken

Not that NFL.com’s analysts or scouts are the end all, but they’ve had Perriman ranked 3rd amongst WR’s from the get-go. It’s always been Cooper – White – Perriman – Parker

    • Ken says:

Before his pro day I have seen him listed as a 4th round pick our sources are obviously different but I have seen him listed as a 2nd tier prospect in multiple sources

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s interesting to look at the grades at all the positions. You see there are only a handful they think are top dogs and then a bunch are all in the 6.0 – 6.3 range.

  22. Ken says:

Lunch is over back to my deposition. Peace

  23. Mike E. says:

OK, actually I’m wrong. I had to dig a little, but Perriman had a 5.8 grade and Parker had a 6.17 before the combine and pro days. Perriman WAS behind Parker. My mistake.

  24. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Yeah, Leonard Williams is at the top, and and then Cooper, and then everyone else is below 7.

  25. Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,
    Out of that group?
Randy Gregory. He will be what Dion Jordan will never be.

    • Mike E. says:

I think I would freak Al. He may very well be that, but if he doesn’t play immediately and pay dividends immediately, it will be agonizing to go through that. Not only that, we better trade Jordan if we do that.

  26. Mike E. says:

Gonna get the paper, get the paper

  27. The Flying Pig says:

    Dane Brugler added,
    Steve Shoup @Steveospeak
@dpbrugler if you had to guess a guy or two to be selected the highest who would it be from that group?”

  29. Tim Knight says:

When I saw family during the passover holiday our cousin’s son said he was looking forward to going to the NFL Draft. My brother-in-law says to him cool, you’re going to Chicago? He says no, Radio City. We’re like sorry bro, it’s in Chicago this year. He’s like oh fuck that sucks. The year he decides to go they hold it in another city. LOL

  30. stangerx says:

Pig — get the feeling that if Amari Cooper fell to us you’d be the happiest little one that ever went to market. And I get why he’d be a great fit. How far would he have to fall before you’d be oinking “Trade Up”?

  31. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, he and a bunch of his friends were all going to go and make a day of it. They could still go if they really wanted to as they all come from money.

  32. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I was laughing at “the happiest little one that ever went to market”. LOL

    • D says:

When they lift the sactions and embargos against Cuba, its going to boom. It was like that many moons ago before we put the lock down on them. It was easily the Vegas of the Caribbean.

  34. D says:

I just had kinda funny moment, but its not overly uncommon for me. My mind basically creates a dialogue for different things as i think. Kinda like creating its own private movie of things happening in my real life. Just now my stomach had a really strong rumble and immeadately my min create a scene where my stomach was reporting to my brain “Looks like we have an emergency situation here capt’n… full on sea dog accent and all. The funniest part though is as i got up to go to the resturant, one of my employees said “What did you just say?” I then realised i not only imagined it, i verbally acted it out loud. lol. Did this a week or so ago while in the shower and when i got out of the shower my wife was like “Who were you talking to in there.” By that time i had already forgotten whay it was i was thinking so i really have no f’ing clue what i may have said lol. Anyone else here do this shit?

    • Tim Knight says:

Yes, my daughter has caught me talking to myself a few times. I tell them I’m not crazy, I’m just saying my thoughts out loud, I’m not talking to an imaginary person. LOL

  35. Try Pod says:

  37. stangerx says:

“With injuries and whatnot, I played a little bit more than they expected me to play last season. I was playing the whole game. How I feel next year, it depends on how much volume they have me doing. I’d like to come in on third-and-7s, red zones, those situations. That’s what my contribution is at anyway.”

Thinking the FF draft position of Antonio Gates just dropped with that comment. Also sounds like a guy who doesn’t have long left.

    • Mike E. says:

He also may be playing without Rivers.

      • stangerx says:

I’d take him as a 2nd TE specialist. If they actually trade Rivers then they are gonna be rebuilding with an aye on a point long after he is still around. He’s got a huge cap hit next year……might be a cut candidate for that matter.

  38. Mike E. says:

For some reason, my first thought when I hear Cuba is the Godfather.

    • Try Pod says:

I think about Godfather Part II, when Michael kisses Fredo.. But I also think about Hemingway…

      • Mike E. says:

Well yeah, it was Godfather II, but in my head, I’m not thinking Godfather Part II, just Godfather. lol

I remember the whole discussion between Michael and Hyman Roth, when Roth was telling Michael how they did business together with his father when they were younger.

  39. Mike E. says:

The cherry blossom trees are blossoming. Looks beautiful, and a true sign Spring is here for real.

  40. Tim Knight says:

I don’t get why the Chargers would part ways with Rivers. This is a good article on this even though it’s by Adam Schein who I find extremely annoying.

    • stangerx says:

None in Asgard can leave without the rainbow bridge being there. So think of Collins as the bridge and L Miller as Thor.

  44. getterdone says:

According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have been doing “a lot of research” on Georgia RB Todd Gurley.
Per reporter Barry Jackson, they are “unquestionably intrigued.” The Dolphins are like moths to the flame for big names, so we wouldn’t doubt Jackson’s report. Considered by many to be the best running-back prospect since Adrian Peterson, Gurley is all but assured of coming off the board on Day 1. The Dolphins hold the No. 14 overall pick.

  45. Mike E. says:

    Tim

If you’re going to rebuild, and Rivers has only 1 more year after this year on his contract, it makes sense for the Chargers if they get the right compensation, whatever that is they decide is good for their team. As far as the Titans, they wouldn’t do this do this deal unless Rivers was going to sign a 4-6 year contract. If I look at it from the Titans perspective, it seems murky to me, why they would want Rivers. From the Chargers perspective it makes all the sense in the world to me.

Not that NFL.com’s analysts or scouts are the end all, but they’ve had Perriman ranked 3rd amongst WR’s from the get-go. It’s always been Cooper – White – Perriman – Parker
    *
NOT on any site I’ve seen. Perriman has always been a 2nd day pick

    • Mike E. says:

I wasn’t talking about ANY site, just NFL.com. Perriman is a borderline 1st RD pick on many sites, and he’s moved up into the mid to late 1st RD on others.

      • stangerx says:

Probably proving Rock’s point more than yours given the source, but……

“Kiper now has four wide receivers going in the top 10 picks in this mock: Cooper (4th), Kevin White (6th), Breshad Perriman (7th) and DeVante Parker (10th).”

  47. Try Pod says:

    Mike E,
Yeah, I wasn’t trying to be a ball buster about G-Father..

  48. Mike E. says:

LOL @ Stanger. I think he’s going to be a 1st RD pick on some teams boards, and just outside on others.

  49. Mike E. says:

Check this one out! This is Sonny’s favorite site, and if it wasn’t, it is now! lol

    http://www.draftsite.com/nfl/mock-draft/2015/

  50. Tim Knight says:

4 WRs in the top 10?

    • stangerx says:

Talk to Kiper. And no I don’t buy it. How many times have we seen five or six WRs predicted to go in the first and only three do? Think as hard as all but the very elite are to project GM’s decide sending out wideout smoke signals is the best way to go.

    • Mike E. says:

It’s possible. BTW – The last link I put up (draftsite.com) has us taking THREE WR’s, no CB’s or LB’s or OL. That’s just plain ol’ silly!

  51. stangerx says:

“Sometimes you just have to say the obvious when listening to the inanity around: Sedate me if the Dolphins take a guard with the 14th pick overall. Just sedate me. I don’t even know where to start with this. But here’s a good point: There are only two of 64 starting NFL guards drafted higher than 14th.”
    ——————–
Scares me when I agree with Hyde, but that is a serious point. Still with WR or trade down.

    • Tim Knight says:

There is no guard rated in the 1st round. All the OL are tackles and some of them can play guard. The thinking for Miami is one of these guys gives us depth if Albert isn’t ready or even worse has a setback, and they could also compete at guard for now if he is ready and replace him a few years down the road.

Hyde didn’t really think this through and we’re also not drafting higher than #14. LOL

      • stangerx says:

But assuming Hyde has his stats right, he is talking where current guards where drafted……no matter what the projected position going in. And Albert is coming back and on a long contract and just spent a first on James last year. Anyone we pick will either be a G or on the bench.

  52. Rockphin says:

Probably proving Rock’s point more than yours given the source, but……
    *
LOL at the poke at count chocula!

  53. Mike E. says:

    Stanger

5 teams took WR’s in the 1st RD last year, and NONE of them were in the playoffs. You can bend stats to tell any story you want. lol

  54. Tim Knight says:

    I have 4 WRs going in the 1st round… blah… blah blah!!!

  55. Mike E. says:

    Stanger

I’m replying to your 4:06PM post. What if Albert is out the 1st 4 games? You saw what happened to our offense last year, and NO WR is going to fix that. It’s an issue that scares the heck out of me. Yes, we can draft an OG in the 2nd or the 5th,but if Fat Albert can’t go, we’re in trouble.

    • Mike E. says:

I think despite the positive reports of his recovery, we should be prepared for a setback, either a minor one, (A month or two extra) or a major one (Can’t play this year). I cringe to think of Dallas Thomas or Jason Fox as our starting T

      • stangerx says:

Seems to me you don’t lock in at #14 based on four games. Would be different if they though Albert was going IR. But hey, if they sorta wanted to go that way anyhow I wouldn’t complain. Lots of G/RTs will be there after either a tradedown or in the 2nd though.

  56. The Flying Pig says:

I gues the cosmic blaster is a popular weapon

  57. getterdone says:

I think everybody gets way too caught up in prospect rankings, draft projections, mocks, etc.
Most of it is purely stat & measurables driven.
All those draft websites are just like us, wannabe GM’s/Scouts.

When a 7th round player becomes a star and a 1st round player becomes a bust, then it should tell you how flawed the whole BS media & subsequent process is.

I don’t care who or where a player is chosen, just be consistent and hit on at least a third to half the guys you select. 🙂

    • The Flying Pig says:

You read enough of these websites and scouting reports and ou realize ther eis only so much you can no about a prospect

Its entertaining and fun – but I agree way too much is made about the rankings and projections

But i guaranty if the draft was in Mid-April instead of the last day of April we would not be having this conversation

The draft being so late is what really drives the overkill

  58. Mike E. says:

    Stanger

Usually no, but doesn’t it seem like we’re gearing up for this season, and the next? That being the case, if we’re going for it, we need to protect ourselves if Albert isn’t ready, and I’m not sure we have 2 starting OG’s on our roster now, so that guy would instantly become our starting G.

    • stangerx says:

Nobody we draft is going to be starting day LT. So if it comes to a RT to be a G, I’m not as worried about it. But yep……think somebody to be a starting G is coming our way.

  59. Mike E. says:

I couldn’t vote for the testicle remover Piggy. lol

  63. Tim Knight says:

I’ve gotten to the point that outside of a few positions that wouldn’t make sense to me, all I care about is whoever we pick in the entire draft helps us become a better team and make the playoffs.

    • Mike E. says:

      ^ Agreed

    • D says:

Kinda way i always feel, even if they took a DE or something, id be pretty ok with it, because obviously they have a plan that make that be the best option. I have my ideas that i feel certain players are best for us, but i also only have a limited amount of information and am but one person, where as these people have physically met with a lot of them, they have 100 times the footage of them, they have seen them live multiple times, so to think i am more right than them is just silly. I think ya gotta have to be kinda like that to be able to enjoy the outcome of the draft and be able to approach the new season with out already being negative before even TC starts.

Some housefly that comes up and gets in I hunt down. But basically, I leave my balcony window open whenever I go out so my dogs can decide what to do.
