Game 9; Baltimore @ Miami, Nov. 11, 1973
Sometimes fans go to football games and witness something totally out of the ordinary. Something truly outstanding. Something they’ve never heard of or seen before. Something that is record breaking.
Such a thing ACTUALLY HAPPENED when the Colts traveled to Miami to play the first place Dolphins in the historic Orange Bowl on Nov. 11, 1973. It involved NOT a Hall of Famer NOR one of the leading stars. Instead, it involved low profile Dolphins’ defensive back Tim Foley who, like Bob Griese, was an alum of Purdue University. On this day, Foley would achieve something that had never been achieved before in the long history of the National Football League.
Head coach Don Shula had dealt with one of his unpleasant memories the previous Sunday when Miami came from behind to defeat the Jets 24-14 in Shea Stadium. The pain of Shula’s loss to Namath and the Jets in Super Bowl III was far from gone. But four consecutive wins over New York certainly salved Shula’s wounds.
And speaking of losing to the Jets, Don Shula had been head coach of the Colts that fateful day in the historic Orange Bowl. Shula hoped Super Bowl III would be the crowning achievement in his spectacularly successful stint as head coach of the Baltimore franchise. Over seven seasons, Shula compiled a gaudy 71-23-4 record. In the 1967 and 1968 seasons Shula had a 26-3-2 record, THE SECOND BEST TWO-YEAR RUN IN NFL HISTORY, exceeded only by his 32-2 TWO-YEAR RUN WITH THE 1972 AND 1973 MIAMI DOLPHINS! Shula’s overall record during his first 10 years as an NFL head coach 113-30-4, a mind-boggling 83 games over .500!! –Needless to say, THAT record has never been broken!!
Colts’ owner Carroll Rosenbloom could only remember Shula’s big Super Bowl defeat. An ungrateful Rosenbloom said “Shula always chokes in the big games.” After Miami owner Joe Robbie stole Shula away from Baltimore, Rosenbloom didn’t want Shula back. Instead, he demanded, and GOT, via a ruling from commissioner Pete Rozelle, Miami’s top draft choice. Later, Rosenbloom traded ownership of the Colts in exchange for becoming owner of the Los Angeles Rams. Rosenbloom was in Los Angeles the day Shula’s Dolphins won Super Bowl VII at the L. A. Coliseum and completed the NFL’s one and only Perfect Season. Said Shula, “I’m particularly pleased we won this championship in the very city where a certain man (Rosenbloom) now resides.”
Don Shula enjoyed great success against every one of his AFC East opponents in the decade of the ’70’s, including his former team, the Baltimore Colts. After losing to the Colts in 1970, Shula’s Dolphins won eight of their next 10 meetings. On January 2, 1972, Miami shutout Baltimore 21-0 in the AFC Championship Game. Then, during the 1972 Perfect Season, Shula’s Dolphins shut out the Colts twice more by scores of 23-0 and 16-0. The Don of Miami relished the thought of blanking the Colts for a fourth consecutive time!
Miami’s offensive coordinator during those three consecutive shutout victories was Howard Schnellenberger. Today, however, “Schnelly” was on the other side of the field. He had been hired by Baltimore as their new head coach not long after the Dolphins won Super Bowl VII. Schnellenberger’s rebuilding process in Baltimore was hampered by a lack of young talent. Both he and his former boss (Shula) knew that the 2-6 Colts would have to play their best game of the year just to keep this game close.
The temperature was a mild 74 degrees at the 1:00 PM kickoff. But swirling 15-20 MPH winds coming in from Biscayne Bay would play havoc with both teams’ passing games. This played right into Miami’s advantage. The Dolphins had the best offensive line and the best running game in the NFL.
On Miami’s second possession Mercury Morris used his quick feet to bouce outside left tackle, then back across the center of the field, on his way to a 48 yard touchdown romp! The “No Name Defense” stopped the Colts on their next series, forcing a David Lee punt. Cornerback Tim Foley, a special teams ace, broke through the line and BLOCKED LEE’S KICK! He snared the ball at the eight yard line and scooted into the end zone, giving the Fins an early 14-0 lead!
Miami continued to run the ball with success. The next long drive got the ball all the way to the Baltimore six yard line. Yepremian’s chip shot field goal expanded the lead to 17-0 at the end of the first quarter. The rout was on!
Neither of Baltimore’s quarterbacks, Marty Domres or Bert Jones, were effective against Miami’s suffocating defense. They would combine for just seven completions in 22 attempts for 59 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Miami would sack these two QB’s five times for 39 yards in losses. Thus, Baltimore ended with just 20 yards net passing FOR THE ENTIRE GAME!!
The second quarter featured a 53 yard touchdown run by Mercury Morris plus a 14 yard Yepremian field goal. It was 27-0, Miami, at the half.
Miami’s “No Names” stuffed the Colts again early in the third quarter. AGAIN, David Lee’s punt was blocked, this time by Bob Matheson! Tim Foley scooped-up the ball at the five and sprinted into the end zone with his second TD of the game! It marked the FIRST TIME IN NFL HISTORY that anyone had returned TWO BLOCKED PUNTS FOR TOUCHDOWNS in a single game! Foley was in the record books! And the Dolphins had a 34-0 lead.
Later, Garo would connect on a 38 yard 3-pointer and reserve running back Charlie Leigh would scamper 34 yards for another Dolphins’ TD, making the final score 44-0 in favor of Miami. Don Shula HAD his fourth consecutive shutout of the Colts, outscoring them 104-0 over that span!
Game statistics told an equally lopsided tale. Miami had 17 first downs to four for Baltimore. Miami had a club record 315 yards rushing plus 97 yards passing by Griese and Morrall. The Colts had a paltry 132 yards rushing and passing combined, much of it in the fourth quarter against Miami’s back-up defenders.
On the day, Mercury Morris rushed 12 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns. His average through nine games was 7.3 YARDS PER CARRY!! And the “No Name Defense” was now playing at their absolute best just as this team prepared to travel to Buffalo for a key AFC East showdown against OJ Simpson and the Bills!
Speaking of Buffalo, the news out of Rich Stadium was outstanding. The Bengals had just defeated the Bills 16-13, dropping Buffalo to 5-4. A Miami victory next Sunday would CLINCH THE AFC EAST TITLE FOR MIAMI!
The 1973 Miami Dolphins were now 8-1.

The subject of the blog yesterday was about Brady smashing phones.
I read this somewhere about the pats and where everything was going so I posted it.I’m no lawyer but after reading it I thought maybe just maybe the author of the article was correct about 1st amendment pertaining to the case along with someone else saying 4th amendment also applying to the Brady case.

Like I said I was wrong as Ken a lawyer pointed out to me. I’m no lawyer but I will pursue all information that a Dolphin fan should do instead of being misinformed and spreading non factual facts.

Really sucks that our OL has been an issue for so long now, but I don’t think we can afford to lose out on Mathis the way things seem to be going. Even if Albert returns game one he won’t be at 100% for the season and our depth is paper thin. It’s going to mean some painful cuts or salary restructures that prolong the cap problem, but let’s bring Mathis in and live with the results. Tannehill has proven to be very durable, but I’d love to see him operate with a clean pocket and confidence to stand in there.
Good to see you drg. The main issue with the OL is not just guard or LG as if Mathis will fix everything. It’s the OL as a unit that needs to get better. We have a very good DL so some of the worries with the OL in TC comes from that. Turner or anyone else at RG is not going to push Suh around. Our other young guards playing LG aren’t going to dominate Mitchell etc. So it’s kind of a catch 22. Do we want the OL dominating the DL so when we play the season teams run all over us? No fuckin way! LOL
We’ve been saying that for a while now. We have a good d-line so that’s why the oline struggles. Last year our dline wasn’t even that good. The oline just sucked specially when albert went down. And it seems to me so far this year is no different.
There is a reason Tanny has been the most sacked QB in the league the last 2 years.
OL issues are worrisome. It has been our achilles heel for the past 3 seasons. I am hoping that our young guys can step up. I know its just TC but the reports today were not encouraging.

Hey drg! Good to see you on here. I said this yesterday, the team obviously made a lot of moves this offseason in an effort to get us over the hump and into the playoffs. I believe if they really feel that the guys we have are inadequate, they will make the call to Mathis. I just don’t think we’re at that point quite yet. It’s too early.

Boulder, what does last year’s DL have to do with this year’s DL? It’s different. Also last year’s OL was completely different than this years. People forget Satele was a weak link at times last year. It’s not just about guard. We have a lot of young players on the OL. That’s not going to change this year.
my point was last year in training camp when the oline struggled the excuse was the same as this year. We have a really good d-line so its ok for the oline to struggle against them. And now we’re making the same excuse. The FO needs to admin we have a problem and go fix it.

Boulder, every year people need something to complain about with this team. In the recent past it was Tannehill and the deep ball and now it’s the OL, mainly guard. Just look at the tweets from the media to see where their agenda is. Is Evan Mathis going to block the edge rushers and the guys on the opposite side too. Guys have to get better and the OL needs to build chemistry together.
I’d be worried if we only score one or two TDs so far on offense in camp. That’s not the case. So it’s not as bad as it’s being made out to be. But the media needs something to harp on.
At this point this what we have, let’s hope they’ll get better.
I know it is only TC and our DL should be better than our OL but the problem I have is for the past 3 years we have seen the same reports/tweets about our OL during TC and that has essentially translated to the play on the field during the regular season. That makes me feel uneasy. The one thing I take some hope in is Albert coming back. A healthy Albert changes the dynamic of the OL significantly and when Albert was healthy was playing much better so him getting back in the line up is essential imo.
I agree. Without albert you really can’t judge this o-line. But it seems every year we hear the same thing from TC. The oline is struggling.

exactly. that is why the o line is fixed, tanny and the deep ball is fixed when this team is 12-4 or 11-5 and a strong playoff team. till then i would rather just hear the stories of plagiarism or more about those amazing mets. lol

Ken Thomas graded out decent @ OG last year, his troubles was @ OT, hence why I’m worried about depth @ OT…again, Mathis doesn’t fix that concern.

Pouncey looks like he finally cares, but just remember, he was below average to average at G last year, coming off his injury. Albert still can’t move yet. James I really like, so that’s really 2 guys, assuming Pouncey regains his form at C. You can like Jamil Douglas all you want, you can’t be sure he’s ready to play, and Thomas is shaky as all hell. Evan Mathis would be an upgrade over either Douglas or Thomas, and that’s all that really matters.
Look at Evan Mathis grades….he excels @ run blocking but is not as good @ pass blocking….so again, is Mathis going to be the cure all for the OL by wiping the rest of our cap out?

His pass blocking wasn’t as good as his run blocking. Our guys seem to run block ok, hence Miller running well last season, over 1K yards.

His run blocking was all-pro. If his pass blocking was above average, that’s still better than Thomas or Douglas. Again, I’m not saying that we need Mathis right now, but to say you’re not sold on Mathis seems silly to me. He’s a clear upgrade over just about anyone on our O-line right now.

I’m not sure of some of you are just referrring to this regime, but our OL has been subpar for a lot longer than 3 years.
The last time we had a strong OL was 2009 and then Grove and Smiley got hurt and we never really recovered.
That OL was fragile. We signed two players with injury history, and it wound up biting us.
I honestly don’t think our OL has been good for the better part of a decade, or more.
I am concerned about OL but I am not sure Mathis is the answer to our woes. He remains unsigned and that is likely for a reason. We are not the only team in need of an OG and yet Mathis hasn’t been picked up and his forte is run blocking not pass protection which is our biggest problem.

Turner reportedly has actually looked good in the run game but struggles in pass pro, especially going up against Suh.

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard veteran players say they waited until after training camp to sign with a team.
That’s because usually they have to, unless someone throws enough money at them. Noone is giving Mathis his asking price as of yet, so he’s playing chicken.

the oline was decent sparano’s 1st year when we had Pennington and ricky and ronnie show.
I beg to differ Boulder. The reason we implemented the Wildcat was because our OL sucked so badly we could barely run the ball in the first two games. We needed it to survive.
We got to develop players, we’ve got 2 OG’s recently in the 3rd round…at some point they need to play and gain experience.
Believe me, I want my boy Tanny with utmost protection, but the merry go round of OL players has to stop so we can build a unit of 5-7. Mathis isn’t part of the future turning 34 this season….IMO.
the good thing is tannenbaum build pretty decent olines when he was with the jets. hopefully he can do the same here.

Just to be clear, I don’t know if Mathis is the answer for us. I’m inclined to let the line develop and go from there. My point was that I believe there are several reasons why he is not in camp; I concede that you make a valid point, but that is the same for everyone. For example, a guy retires from a $100k job, his boss offers him extra $20k to stay, guy says no, boss offers $30k guy says no, but starts to think about it. Boss says $50k final offer guy says, I’ll take the corner office.

I tend to agree about Mathis. If there weren’t question marks surrounding him, then he would be signed already, despite his contract demands. I’m not sold on him either.
It’s a fine line right now on Mathis, one that none of us on the outside really know.
Let’s see how camp unfolds when we face another team.

David Morgan, father of Houston Texans defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after allegedly firing shots outside a South Carolina strip club early Tuesday morning.
The alleged incident took place at the Crazy Horse Showclub in Rock Hill, S.C. and is the latest trouble for Clowney’s father. Morgan has had several past convictions and is prohibited from owning a gun.
It is unclear at this time what sparked the incident. Morgan could face 30 years in prison for attempted murder and five years for the weapons charge.

Lazor said it’s not his job to lobby for players. He said he likes what he’s seen from Miami’s young guards and that three players — Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner and rookie Jamil Douglas — have emerged for the two starting spots.
He praised Thomas, who has struggled in spot starts since the Dolphins drafted him in the third round in 2013.
“Dallas Thomas is a much improved player from what we saw last year,” Lazor said.
Lazor believes the line will gel and that the key to the offense is Tannehill, who was solidified as the team’s franchise quarterback after signing a contract extension this offseason worth up to $95 million over the next six years.
“When you get a certain library of play reps in your mind, you know where everyone is so you can play decisively and you can play fast,” Lazor said. “You saw it happen as the year went on for him and it’s just going to continue to happen.”
The offensive expectations in Miami have changed so much since Lazor arrived that he was asked about the challenge of not having enough footballs for all of the Dolphins’ talented receivers.
“I’ve never thought that was a problem in my life,” he said.

And one of the BIGGEST reasons for this dry spell is the utter inability of management to produce an offensive line that consistently ranks in the upper half of the NFL. –In fact, Miami’s had one of the WORST O-Lines in the league for the entire length of the Philbin tenure. So far, I’ve seen or read NOTHING during this off season that makes me believe we’ve solved this glaring, and lengthy, problem. Albert has failed to play a complete season for the last several years. It’s NOT a matter of IF he gets injured; it’s WHEN he gets injured. And, when Albert goes, so goes our chances of playoff success UNLESS Do-Hickey can pull a very large and powerful rabbit out of his hat!! –In fact we need MORE THAN ONE OF THOSE HUGE RABBITS because of our lack of quality depth, especially at the guard position. I will give you fans something NONE of you wants to hear. —If our O-Line is NOT significantly better than last year’s O-Line, there is a continuing high risk that Tannehill will be injured AND that one of our star running backs ALSO will go down due to a lack of production/protection from the O-Line. And if Tanny misses significant playing time (3 or more games), WE WILL FINISH WITH ANOTHER LOSING RECORD THIS SEASON!!

It’s a lesson Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor learned years ago from former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs. It might be the most important piece of advice he’ll ever receive.
“He had a picture of a dinosaur,” Lazor said of Gibbs. “He’d talk about (it) — adapt or die. A certain percentage of your offense every year has to change.
“It has changed. I can’t give you the percentage, but if you don’t grow, I think you end up dying on offense at some point.”
Adapting is exactly why the Dolphins hired Lazor a year ago. The offense was stagnant under former coordinator Mike Sherman, ranking 27th in the NFL in 2012 at 18 points per game and 26th in 2013 at 19.8 points per game.
Enter Lazor, who took over play-calling duties last year and elevated Miami’s offense to 11th in the NFL at 24.3 points per game.
He oversaw a faster offense that made space for playmakers and took advantage of mismatches.
But he could do only so much with the personnel he inherited. This season, the Dolphins have brought in bigger red-zone threats in 6-foot-5 tight end Jordan Cameron and 6-3 rookie receiver DeVante Parker, who is recovering from foot surgery.
They traded for receiver Kenny Stills, who replaces Mike Wallace as the team’s deep threat but is a stronger route runner. They also signed veteran Greg Jennings, a former Pro Bowl receiver.
It’s a lot of new faces for Lazor, but he said it all starts with his quarterback and center, who already have a year of experience in the offense.
“We’re gonna go as fast as Ryan Tannehill and Mike Pouncey can go,” Lazor said. “The other guys got to keep up.”

What would you say if I told you that we rushed for a grand total of 25 more yards in 2008 than 2014, on 50 more carries? Sacks were way down, but our line has been historically bad since Tanehill has become the QB in terms of sacks (Some of that HAS to be on him).
In 09 we rushed for over 2,200 yards.

There are plenty of reasons why the Fins haven’t been successful outside of OL issue.
I mentioned yesterday the point about 8-8 not being equal YR/YR.
In 2013, Fins went 8-8 with a defense that finished 8th in pts allowed; offense 26th in pts scored.
In 2014, Fins went 8-8 with a defense that finished 20th in pts allowed; offense 11th in pts scored.
Can’t get to the playoffs with units alternating shitting the bed.
I think this year the Fins D plugged the right holes; on offense the WR group was remade but theres a good mix of savvy veterans, 2nd year guy, and a talented rookie.
The OL consistency may be lacking but there will be more talent there than last year.
Douglas is a rookie so he won’t be immuned from rookie woes; it’s been only a week or so of camp and only a few days with pads on. Let’s not freak out over a week of ‘practice’.
Coaches claim Thomas has gotten better but let’s wait and see what we see in preseason games.

I saw an interview with Rizzi during the early OTAs and he thinks Sturgis can be a really good kicker. He said he wasn’t healthy the entire season last year and that’s why he’s saying he’s almost being back to himself. We’ll see.

the best thing about this year is the schedule we play. It’s much easier than the last 2 years. We don’t play a playoff team until week 8.
