The Porcine Oddssey #97: A Dolphins Carol, Dolphins @ Redskins

PiggyToiletRedskins

The Porcine Oddyssey #97:

A Dolphins Carol,

Dolphins at Redskins

(Piggy tucks himself into bed)

The Flying Pig:  (to himself as he closes his eyes)  Its almost game day.  What a great offseason the Dolphins had…Well of course we had a great offseason.

We have Ryan Tannehill.  He was the obvious pick for the Dolphins in 2012.  Since the Dolphins drafted him in PiggyDreamsTanny2012 it was basically a foregone conclusion the Dolphins would be competing to be a contender eventually.  And here we are, on the eve of the 2015 season.  I can’t wait to fall asleep and dream about the 2015 season.  We are going to the Super Bowl!  Football is so predictable…

A Voice:  Piggy….

The Flying Pig:  What was that?

A Voice:  Piggy…open your eyes…

The Flying Pig:  Who said that (opening his eyes and getting out of bed)

A Voice:  I said it Piggy…look at me…I am the Ghost of Ryan Tannehill

GhostOfTanny

The Flying Pig:  The Ghost of Ryan Tannehill?!?!  It can’t be!  Ryan Tannehill is alive and well and the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins!

The Ghost of Ryan Tannehill:  Don’t worry yourself with technicalities Piggy…you had 8 beers before you went to bed.

The Flying Pig: Well…I’m under a lot of stress with the start of the NFL season and all…

The Ghost of Ryan Tannehill: You think it was destiny Piggy?   You think the Dolphins only had eyes for me and there were no other QBs the Dolphins might pick in 2012?

The Flying Pig:  Well Yeah…

The Ghost of Ryan Tannehill: Foolish Pork!  The 2012 draft could have been a disaster for the Dolphins!

The Flying Pig: No way!  Ryan Tannehill born to be a Dolphin.  We saved our disasters for the 2nd and 3rd round in those years.  Besides there was no other realistic option for the Dolphins…

The Ghost of Ryan Tannehill: Before you wake tomorrow, you will be visited by 3 ghosts….(he floats away)

The Flying Pig: (Piggy pulls the covers over himself)  I’m never drinking stout beer again…

SUDDENLY THERE IS A SCRATCHING SOUND AT THE DOOR.  PIGGY GOES TO THE DOOR OUT OF CURIOSITY.

THERE IS MORE SCRATCHING AND A WHINING SOUND.

PIGGY OPENS THE DOOR AND A PUPPY IS AT THE DOOR.

16 week old Golden Retriever puppy scratching fleas with leg in motion on a white background

The Puppy:  Piggy…I am RG Flea

The Flying Pig:  Oh…you are  cute little guy  (scratching him behind the ear)

RG Flea:  I am here to tell you about the past…well April 2012 to be exact…

The Flying Pig:  You mean when we drafted Tanny?

RG3draft

RG Flea:  (licking Piggy’s face)  Yep…but you could have drafted RGIII instead.

The Flying Pig:  (pushing the puppy away)  awww…stop it now….we weren’t stupid enough to draft that bust…

RG Flea:  Piggy, once upon a time in April 2012, there was a legitimate debate as to who should be the #1 pick in the draft:  Andrew Luck or RGIII.

The Flying Pig:  No Tanny?

RG Flea:  No…but there were rumors that three teams would consider trading to the #2 spot in the draft to take whomever was left…the Browns, The Redskins and your Dolphins…

The Flying Pig:  What?  Stupid Puppy!  Do you have brain damage.  What did Michael Vick do to you?  (shaking the puppy)  What did Vick do to you?!?!

TannyDraft

RG Flea:  No its true Piggy…all of it…RGIII had a rocket arm and ran a 4.41 at the combine.  He was an All American at Baylor in football and track!  And it seems the draft hype carried into his rookie year.  He was named offensive rookie of the year in 2012 and helped make the read option a fashionable play.

But the Dolphins made the mistake of not trading up for RGIII and settled on Ryan Tannehill, a wide receiver!

DolphinsSlippers

The Flying Pig:  Settled!  Stupid Puppy…get out of my house.  (dragging the puppy by the collar to the door)  I have heard enough of your barks.  (He opens the door and throws the puppy out of the house)

RG Flea:  And one more thing…sorry…

The Flying Pig:  Sorry…for what?

RG Flea:  Sorry I pooped in your slippers…

The Flying Pig:  Damnit!

THERE IS ANOTHER KNOCK AT THE DOOR

The Flying Pig: Go away Puppy!

THE KNOCK CONTINUES AND PIGGY OPENS THE DOOR TO YELL AT THE PUPPY.  BUT THE PUPPY ISN’T THERE ANYMORE.  THIS TIME A BROKEN TEA CUP IS THERE.

RGTea

RG Tea:  Piggy…do you know how much the Redskins gave up for RG III?    Four picks!  Their first round picks in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and a second round pick in 2012.  Ouch!

The Flying Pig:  What happened to you teacup?  You are broken?

RG Tea:  Do you know how many 1st round offensive line men the Redskins took on day 1 of the draft since Griffin…zero!  This is what happens when you ignore the offensive line!

The Flying Pig: Oh…

RG#Oops1

RG Tea:  And no weapons either…meanwhile the Colts selected Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen and TY Hilton in 2012 to play with Andrew Luck.

The Flying Pig:  And the Dolphins selected Jonathan Martin and Michael Egnew (Piggy makes a farting sound)

RG Tea: Well…okay it didn’t work out so well in 2012 after Tannehill with the first pick.  But the Dolphins eventually may have fixed that and they also acquired Olivier Vernon, Lamar Miller and Rishard Matthews in 2012 as well..Meanwhile the Redskins…well presently they look like shit…And that’s why I’m here to tell you about the present.

RG3oops2

The Flying Pig:  I will tell you about the present!  Ryan Tannehill is gonna surpass his numbers from 2014.

RG Tea:  He might…he is gonna have to pass for 4,000 yards for a second consecutive year to do it…but he might..while that happens RG III has become a diva quarterback who can’t stay healthy, runs before throwing and won’t play another down for the Redskins.  The Redskins have named Kirk Cousins as their #1 QB and Colt McCoy as their #2 QB.

The Flying Pig: Kirk Cousins is going to be eaten alive on Sunday! Growl!!!

RG Tea: He might be, not only are the Redskins down a Quarterback, they are down three other starters with those extra draft picks they gave up. Those picks could have been offensive linemen. Instead the Redskins offensive line looked like garbage in the preseason…There is no future for RGIII behind that Oline…but don’t listen to me talk about the future,  Let RG Me tell you about the future…

Mirror

The Flying Pig:  Who?

RG Me:  He said RG Me Piggy…that’s me!

The Flying Pig:  But you are a mirror?

RG Me:  That’s right.  Who better to describe the future of a narcissistic diva than a mirror.   While the media and fans were ignoring Ryan Tannehill, RG III was racking up endorsements with Adidas, Castro Motor Oil, EA Sports, Subway and Gatorade…He was a marketing monster.  So I’m sure he stashed away a ton of money so it doesn’t matter what happens to his NFL career

The Flying Pig: Meanwhile Ryan Tannehill was working on his game.

RG Me:  That’s right Piggy…but it could have been the Dolphins instead of the Redskins…

RGMe

The Flying Pig:  No…you are lying…not even Jeff Ireland…

RG Me:  No Piggy…I am telling the truth…Look deeper into me and see it…

The Flying Pig:  No I won’t…but I guess I should look a little….(staring into the mirror)  SQUEAL SQUEAL!!! What is it..  What the fuck happened to my teeth?!?!

RG Me:  Look at it Piggy.  This is what you could have been.  An RGIII fan!  Saying things like ” When we get RGIII back” or “this offense is a bad fit for him” or “at least he is fun to play in Madden”

The Flying Pig:  No!  SQUEAL SQUEAL SQUEAL!!!  Take me back.  Take me to reality!  I want Tanny as my QB!  I want Tanny as my QB!

PIGGY WAKES UP AND IT IS GAMEDAY.  HE PUTS ON HIS TANNEHILL JERSEY AND SPITS ON HIS DION JORDAN JERSEY.

LETS GO DOLPHINS!!!Sep 14, 2014; Landover, MD, USA; Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins (8) runs off the filed after the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at FedEx Field. The Redskins won 41-10. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

REALLY NICE EFFORT, Mr. PIGGY!!–I SURE appreciate what you do for this site!
    —————————————
AS MOST of you know, our Dolphins defeated the Redskins in the single most important game in the history of our franchise – – Super Bowl VII. –That victory brought our franchise its FIRST NFL CHAMPIONSHIP!! – – And, more importantly, it CLINCHED THE NFL’s ONE AND ONLY PERFECT SEASON!!!!! – – NOW THIS GAME is not as big, but, it’s pretty damned important in its own right.—-A win gets us on course to make a run at what has become a rare occurrence, a playoff spot! —Conversely, an upset defeat at the hands of a back-up QB will bring an avalanche of criticism to this organization!! SIMPLY PUT, WE MUST WIN THIS GAME, PERIOD, or the naysayers will have a field day.
    ———————————–
Most of us on this site EXPECT a double-digit win by Miami. I am one of them!!!

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, we already knew the price to move up to #2 was too much. 3 1st rd picks + was the price and that was just too much for one guy who is unproven. Look at where the Skins are now.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We didn’t know it would be three first upfront though. Chart value as like our 2nd in that draft and a first the next year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Eventually we did hear the price would be 3 1st rd picks + and that’s when most people said no way. But that price the Redskins paid was from #6 to #2 and we were #8 so we new it would be even more for us.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just saying that whether you’d pay sticker for him or a huge premium were two different considerations. Wasn’t really for getting him, but wouldn’t have trashed what would have been the expected deal either.

    ————————————–
i wanted Tanny, knew the Skins gave up to much for him as well, but thats who they wanted and they felt like they would have to move up that high to get him, and that was the price St. Louis was charging. It is what it is. I dont really think the implosion of his career was at all predictable and to be sure he had talent before his pride and believing his one hype got in the way.

You take RGIII and you get a huge rush of euphoria followed by a crash and then a bad headache.
    ———————————————
RG3 is the coke of the 80’s, really expensive, really short high period, the more you keep trying it the less effective it is, and in the end you are broke, and feeling like you wasted the past few years of your life.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All the cons about RGIII have come to fruition. Unfortunately not many knew he was a diva and not a leader either.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah thats the most shocking part is that the guy seemed to have his head on straight and actually interviewed better, in my opinion, than Luck did. Luck didnt interview badly, he just didn’t seem to have the charisma RG3 had, both seemed really mature and grounded.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! That’s why I pondered giving up 2 1st rd picks as a GM fan but quickly realized that wasn’t possible so I stopped even thinking about him and turned to Tannehill as an option if we went QB.

Hickey/Tannebaum must have been big fans of Hard Knocks if what i have read is ture. Ez Nwachukwu and Lynden Trail have been offered spots on our PS, Nwachukwu, Accepted and Trail may still be considering it. I dont have anything that reports/confirms Trail. I think Trail would be a really good sign, he’s a monster of a man and seemed to really flash some good skills at the position. He also was a pretty highly ranked prospect while at UF, before his transfer, and when i was scouting players i kept seeing good things about him. There was a little mixed in negatives but overall seemed like an intriguing prospect. He also is a Miami native, so might be a good match for him as well.

  25. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    here is my humble opinion.

just like with if satan had signed brees, there is no way of knowing if brees would have been just as successful under satan as he has been under payton.

well same for rgIII, no one knows what he would have done under philbin. i am not defending him, i never liked him much. he was like so many qb’s in college now a days, great athletes not great qb’s. but in a different environment no one knows what the out come might have been.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right the same when players get hurt on another team, they may have never gotten hurt somewhere else, different place and time.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Yep. Look at Steve Young in TB vs SF. Imagine if he had been Testaverde’d and stuck all his better years on a sorry ass TB team instead of being dealt to SF and groomed behind Joe Montana with coaches such as Mike Holmgren & Mike Shanahan.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Brees certainly had a match made in heaven with NOLA and Sean Payton. Not to mention that the FO there really did a great job of designing an offense where there were all kinds of weapons (big, fast, small, etc)

  26. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    D,
EZ was a Mike Sherman recruit at Texas A&M; Philbin probably knew of him back in doing draft work with Mike Sherman and the rest of the Miami FO. Texans have had big WR the last few seasons and have continued to go with a vertical game that’s slightly different than WCO style Miami is trying to run. I think Nwachukwu’s speed/size combo restricted him to just the slot in Houston but in Miami’s offense he could move around a little bit to different spots as they focus on attacking a shallower range of the field. For sure Hard Knocks opened some eyes; no question it had some influence but it probably just got Hickey looking at his file again and then discussing with Philbin where EZ might be now versus what Joe/Mike saw of him 2 years ago studying the draft.

    • D's avatar D says:

I know, and Tanny was his QB in college too, so there is probably input given from Tanny as well. I was mostly just making a point that two of the guys last cut by the Texans are now reportedly at least interested by us, if not already signed. Trail to me seems to have tons of upside so i really hope that happens too. I know its a coincidence but interesting one anyways lol. Im really glad that James guy got picked up, he left nothing on the field, though i told my wife early on he had a hard road to making it as most people are looking for a bigger CB these days to combat the monster receivers that have been taking over the NFL, a big reason i felt confident Lippett made the team as well.

  36. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    D,
I like Ced but I think he’s more a pure safety and the Fins don’t really need to carry more than 4. Thomas/Aikens/Kovacs is where Ced was competing. The Fins had more talent at CB and thus decided to keep the mix of youth/experience there for the time being. If anything, Kovacs over Ced might be more of a head scratcher than trading off a CB spot for a S spot on the active roster. But as Tim mentioned, when you are a development player, you really have to show strength on special teams or else teams aren’t going to try and develop you at a position on the active roster (rather via PS).

  39. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Perkins had an article this morning criticizing Fins fans who think the Fins will go 6-0 because they face teams with bad QB. Chris started bringing up crap like the wins Thad Lewis, Mike Glennon, EJ Manuel, & Geno Smith’s of this world got as QB of teams Miami lost to over the last 2-3 seasons. I guess Chris is blind to the problems the DL had in stopping those opposing team RB and also the time in pass protection those bums had on key downs due to the lack of interior rush on those downs.

Thanks, but actually I was surprised at how nice all the ‘ghetto’ peeps were in Savannah. Lots of, in fact most all the lil bars had rock n roll or blues going on with live bands.
Was great to see such well behaved whites & blacks all enjoying themselves.
We covered most of the cities on bike, which is a very kool way to do it & to get around….covered a lot of ground, and the freedom was awesome.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

MF13 is happy for sure but i’m a bit confused on carrying Thomas on the active roster vs another position. I guess the Fins really want to look beyond Matt Moore and will get a 6-7 week trial run while Ajayi rides the temporary IR list.
I don’t know if you saw but Buffalo re-signed Matt Cassell albeit at much cheaper terms.
I think the Fins would like to go that route but there is probably a greater demand for Moore as a backup and thus a higher salary demand than Miami wants to negotiate.

Saw this comment on the sportsexchange news wire regarding the Fins carrying Jacques McClendon.
“09/06/15 – C-G Jacques McClendon was a bit of a surprise to make the final roster. McClendon got a shot at starting guard duties and backup center duties, but while he didn’t make any errors he didn’t seem as though he’d beat out fellow C-G Sam Brenner. But McClendon, the fourth-year player from Tennessee, apparently won the job based on not making mistakes.”

    —————————————–
I had never heard anything about us picking up Neal, i think it was kinda like Trail, they probably offered and have not heard back if he accepted or not. They had 8 of 10 spots filled immedately, EZ makes 9, and Gray is 10. those are the only official poachings i have seen. I really would have preferred Neal over Gray to be honest, and Neal looked pretty decent with GB this camp. I also really hop the Lynden Trail is true and he accepts because he definately has great potential at a position we might lose a starter at next year.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Brandon Marshall isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and that was on full display on Tuesday night.
Discussing the nullification of Tom Brady’s four-game suspension on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL,” the Jets’ wide receiver theorized about how race might have played a role in Judge Richard M. Berman’s decision.
“White players, specifically at the quarterback position, are treated differently,” the five-time Pro Bowler said.
Marshall told host Adam Schein that many black players feel that they are held to different standards than their white counterparts.
“Absolutely,” Marshall said. “At times, at times, at times, yes.”
The 31-year-old stressed that he’s not alone in this thinking. Rather, it’s a widespread belief around the league.
“I think that the important role that I play on this show is to give the viewers (an) inside look of the locker room,” Marshall said. “I am a player right now. This is not just from our locker room; this is from the locker rooms across the States. This is how guys are feeling. This is not just my opinion. These are conversations I’m having with guys.

Before the Dolphins added Gray to the practice squad, they also signed defensive back Jonathan Dowling.

Dowling appeared in seven games with the Oakland Raiders last season after being a seventh-round pick in the 2014 draft.

A native of Bradenton, Dowling first attended the University of Florida before transferring to Western Kentucky.

To make room for Dowling, the Dolphins released quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompsonfrom the practice squad. Running back Rajion Neal was released to make room for Gray.
